Whether close to home or abroad, there are always great places to discover and special spots to return to. Personally, that would be the Amalfi coast, a charming corner of the world I cherish and go back to again and again whenever possible. Recently, I spent a few lovely days around Sorrento and cruised along the Amalfi coast on our friend Francesco’s beautiful gozzo Sorrentino boat. We always go out with him while in Italy and the experience is always magnificent on all levels. If you ever travel to Sorrento, I highly recommend Li Galli Boat Charter. Hope you all enjoy a nice summer close to the sea.

With the same hugely popular, highly practical approach, The Complete Ocean Skipper covers everything a sailor needs to know when planning and preparing for an offshore cruise or ocean passage:

• Preparation: types of suitable boat, choice of rig, engine power, safety equipment, communication systems, crew preparation

• On passage: ocean weather systems, forecasting, deck routines, watchkeeping, self-steering, emergencies, heavy weather techniques

• Ocean navigation: electronic as well as celestial

Stunning BULLET 200

Renowned naval architect Franco Gnessi of the Italian design studio DYD (Dynaship Yacht Design) has created the Bullet 200, a 60-meter sports superyacht that fits into this market segment with refined, streamlined and aggressive external lines borrowed from the world of supercars and capable of enclosing a new and complex layout inside.

The Bullet was born from a precise idea: a design exercise with the aim of making the vessel lose its sense of size. Gnessi has worked to prevent the observer from perceiving the true size of this mega yacht as in a game of perspectives and of lines that blend harmoniously to

create a very refined product with many surprises for what concerns the interior spaces. Starting from a classic displacement hull and inserting clean lines and well-positioned curves, a gritty and very rough project was created which aims to hide the large internal volumes configured to give maximum prominence to privacy and convivial spaces, while creating very private areas.

This 200-feet concept vessel, with its gross tonnage of 975, has a maximum speed of 26 knots and a maximum range of 3,000 nautical miles at 14 knots. Thanks to onboard batteries, it can also cruise at 8 knots for 90 minutes with zero emissions.

Private yacht vacations in our favorite destination. Recommendations from an expert

It is possible to enjoy destinations such as the Caribbean or the most beautiful coasts of Europe aboard a fully equipped and crewed boat. With summer on our doorstep in the northern hemisphere, I chatted with Liza Kharoubi, Business Development and Sales VP of &Beyond Yacht Charters, a specialist in crewed boat rentals to share with our Yachting Times Magazine’s readers the main recommendations when hiring this service in our favorite destination.

What would be the first step when planning a vacation on board?

For those who plan this type of trip for the first time, I would advise to think about what style of adventure at sea they would like to try, if it is a private yacht, sailing, crewed, for example, since there are certain destinations that are more suitable than others according to the type of boat. And although the yachts are not large cruise ships nor hotels, the service on board is personalized according to the preferences of the guests and the result is a differential experience. The proximity of the water, reconnecting with family, partner or friends in this exceptional natural environment and enjoying landscapes from another perspective is the highlight of this adventure.

What do you recommend to those who choose this type of vacation for the first time?

If it is your first experience, I would recommend combining it with a stay on land, to experience the best of both worlds in this way. For example, you can spend four nights on the boat and then on land at the hotel or property that is most convenient for them. In some cases, such as the Virgin Islands, we have the “Stay & Sail” program through which we offer the possibility of staying in Oil Nut Bay, BVI, a resort with all the comforts.

What are the most popular destinations for the charter of a private yacht?

It depends on the boat. For private catamarans, the American and British Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Sea are highly suitable places for those who choose it for the first time. The navigation is very calm and there are many islands and small islands that can be explored. They are also easy destinations to access from the US and our fleet of crewed catamarans in this area are larger than anywhere else in the world, which means more price and yacht model options for the voyager. A very interesting detail about the Caribbean is that the charters are “All Inclusive” with an incredible

NEWS & EVENTS | NOTICIAS & EVENTOS
| 16 | www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com

level of service. In the European summer, the Balearic Islands, Greece, Croatia, the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia are also favorite places to vacation on board.

What are the most outstanding benefits of vacationing on board? Where do I begin? Exquisite food menus tailored to your needs, relaxation, signature cocktails, the calm of the sea, admiring dream landscapes from a new perspective, discovering corners that are otherwise difficult to access, resting deeply, doing water activities very easily and guided by experts, avoiding transfers loaded with luggage, forgetting about schedules by having everything previously organized by a team dedicated to your trip. For all those who like the sea, this proposal should be on the “bucket list” without a doubt, they will have guaranteed memories for a lifetime.

If it’s about the Caribbean, what makes & Beyond Yacht Charters different from the rest of the boat rental companies in the region? We have an office in the Yacht Haven Grande marina and we always maintain a very close relationship with our guests. We get in touch with them before the trip to understand their wishes, their

preferences and we diagram their ideal itinerary. Another very important point is that we really know our boats and we have a privileged relationship with the crew. We specially choose Captain and Chef pairs that enhance the experience of our guests. What novelties does &Beyond Yacht Charters bring for this new season?

Many! One of the most important novelties is that from this year & Beyond Yacht Charters operates in any destination in the world, so it is possible to rent a boat in places like the Balearic Islands, Croatia, Corsica or the Amalfi Coast. In addition, new boats are added to our fleet and some are operated by their own owners who have decided to change their lives to work with us. Other of the yachts that will be added will have highly qualified crew and excellent hosts. Spectacular!

Those who wish to discover more about this type of trip can easily contact me through the & Beyond Yacht Charters website and clear all their doubts to create a dream trip.

Gliding Cape Cod, MA

Vuelo sin motor en Cape Cod, MA

The Perfect Site—White Crest Beach, Wellfleet, MA

El lugar perfecto: White Crest Beach, Wellfleet, MA

Text and Photos: NaNcy Bloom

During Cape Cod’s off-season, hang glider and paraglider pilots travel to Cape Cod, Massachusetts to soar the 15 miles of shoreline abutting National Seashore dunes. The National Seashore is a protected area with a number of restrictions and regulations that pilots must follow in order to fly there. One of the most important regulations is that pilots must take off from a designated launching area, away from sensitive areas. Pilots who launch from outside of the designated area could be fined and could possibly threaten the use of the site.

White Crest Beach, Wellfleet, Massachusetts is one of two approved coastal launching sites for paragliding and hang gliding in Massachusetts. The other Cape site is located in Sagamore. There are a few other approved launching sites, but they are all located in the hills of western Massachusetts.

www.yachtingtimesmagazine.com | 19 |

Coastal gliders launch from the 80-foot-high ridge at White Crest Beach, which offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding dunes.

With the right winds, gliders can soar for hours between two historic lighthouses—Eastham’s Nauset Light to the south, along the dunes to the north to Truro’s Highland Light. Ideal conditions for launching and soaring include East Northeast winds of 10-15 mph for paragliders, and 15-25 mph for hang gliders. The tides also play a big part in the decision to fly safely. An extraordinarily high tide can leave little dry sand for a landing zone, making beach landings impossible, or at best, ill-advised.

Pilots respect and adhere to the National Seashore guidelines and restrictions while soaring White Crest Beach. These restrictions include not disturbing or walking on the dunes, and properly disposing of trash. The dunes are fragile ecosystems and need to be protected. They are quickly eroding, and pilots follow rules to ensure that these dunes remain a safe and enjoyable place to fly and for all to enjoy for future generations. The Cape Cod National Seashore only allows hang gliding and paragliding from early October through mid-April. This is to protect the piping plovers, a threatened bird species that nests in the sand and dunes during the spring and summer months. The 6-inch-long piping plovers are found on beaches all along

the Atlantic coast of the United States. They are threatened by habitat loss, predators and humans. Their eggs and chicks are a favored food of crows, coyotes and raccoons. Their nesting areas are also vulnerable to being trampled by people and domesticated animals.

The Cape Cod National Seashore is a critical habitat for piping plovers. The seashore has a number of regulations in place to protect the plovers, including the ban on hang gliding and paragliding during the summer, and parts of the spring and fall months.

It should be pointed out that conservation efforts have been successful in restoring the piping plover population, bringing the birds back from “endangered” status.

Hang gliding and paragliding are both great ways to get exercise and fresh air while offering a unique and exhilarating experience. Pilots talk of the “feeling of freedom” offered by the activity.

Hang gliding and paragliding is aviation which requires training and a rating to be done safely and legally. You can learn more, including where to find instruction by visiting the United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association website, ushpa.org or contact the New England Paragliding and Hang Gliding Club at Info@NEPHC.org

With22 units sold to date, the Numarine 26XP Fast is a large-volume, expedition-style motor yacht that can be customized with a 4- or 5-cabin layout. Available in a displacement or planing configuration, the latter is equipped with more powerful engines and is aimed squarely at the US market.

In fact, the 85-foot model showcased at the Palm Beach International Boat Show 2023 for her world debut is fitted with twin MAN 1800hp engines for a top speed of 31 knots – fast enough to whisk you from Miami to the Bahamas in just 2-3 hours.

“The Numarine displacement explorer range has proved very popular in the US, but we know there are people out there who love fast boats, especially for weekend or day trips.” Says Omer Malaz, Founder and Chairman of Numarine. “We launched our first planning hull in the XP Series in 2018, but this version has bigger engines for those who want a very fast boat with big volumes.” Numarine’s long-term collaborator Can Yalman designed the 26XP Fast’s exterior and interior. Naturally, clients are free to personalize the interior décor from a wide

range of materials and fabrics. The naval architecture is by Umberto Tagliavini, another perennial partner of the shipyard.

Although the 26XP Fast has the same angular windows and vertical bow as her larger sisters, she is designed to offer the same comfort and amenities in a more compact package. In addition, the 26XP Fast’s modest draft makes her ideal for cruising the shallow waters of the Bahamas. A standout feature of the 26XP Fast is the special 65sqm (700 sq ft) flybridge, the biggest in its size category with space for a 3m (9.8ft) tender (alternatively, the space can be used for storing 2 jet Skis and a 4.5m (13ft) tender can be stowed on the swim platform). In addition to the second helm station, there is a shaded dining area with bar and sun loungers on the open aft deck. Clients can choose between an extended hardtop or a soft top for the flybridge.

“There are several key features that I love about the Numarine 26XP,” said Omer Malaz. “Large areas: the Numarine 26XP has large areas both inside and outside. The flybridge is the largest in the 85’ category. Comfortable cruising: seaworthiness of the 26XP allows you to travel wherever you want. The boat may cruise

while you are sleeping or having breakfast and you won’t be feeling any discomfort. Fuel efficiency: you can burn less fuel. With 8.5 knots of cruising speed you only consume 17lt/h per engine.”

There is accommodation for 8 guests on the lower deck in two ensuite double cabins, a VIP suite forward, and a luxurious 26 sqm (280 sq ft) owner’s suite amidships that takes up the full beam of the boat. On request, an optional 5th cabin can replace the cosy observation lounge on the main deck forward.

The 48 sqm (517 sq ft) main saloon and dining room is light and airy thanks to full-height windows and the galley is conveniently placed adjacent to the dining space. A section of the saloon windows slides open to create a floating balcony over the sea. Including the sofa seating in the bow, the yacht boasts a total of 138 sqm (1485 sq ft) of exterior deck space.

The saloon communicates with the open aft deck via large sliding glass doors. Beyond the al fresco dining area and oversized sunbed, steps on both sides lead down to a generous beach platform (there is accommodation for 3-4 crew in the transom).

The yacht is designed in conjunction with Van Cappellen consultants to eliminate or reduce to a minimum all noise and vibration for maximum comfort. Moreover, an optional ‘Extra silent’ package includes an extended hardtop fitted with solar panels to supplement hotel loads and means only one generator is required.

Constructed using PVC foam with unidirectional and multiaxial E-glass and vinylester resin, the Numarine 26XP takes 6-8 months to build and the next available delivery is in March 2024.

Atripto the most remote place in the world sounds romantic and adventurous. This frozen continent at the end of the Earth has never been permanently occupied by man. It has no towns or villages, just grand, icy, unpredictable wilderness. You may ask yourself, “Is Antarctica my kind of travel destination? “ Definitely. You only need to connect with your adventurous spirit and then allow yourself to enjoy the surreal experience of this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Antarctica is a place in the world that very few have explored, but those that visit this remote destination will be rewarded with unique experiences that will stay with them forever.

But, like many of life’s most rewarding experiences, an Antarctic expedition requires preparation and knowledge. You’ll be sailing into one of the most hostile environments on the planet, and it’s not an undertaking that should be lightly taken.

Most people visit Antarctica on a cruise ship. The IAATO lists all the operators cruising in the area, including some large, mainstream cruise lines. I recommend opting for one of the smaller expedition ships carrying between 50 and 200 passengers. Larger ships with more than 500 passengers are not allowed to disembark passengers near Antarctic waters, which means you would miss the essence of this great ice wilderness. Expedition cruises to Patagonia and Antarctica include trave-

ling by Zodiac to shore for a hike to wildlife sanctuaries and icebergs, viewing bucket-list animals, learning about the local cultures, and attending lectures from naturalists and scientists. Also, toasting with a glacier in the background, with a sense of peace and calm surrounding you, and feeling a taste of exploration and adventure as you’ve never known before. Most cruises leave from Ushuaia in Argentina, or Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams in Chile and take about two days to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. This is the first and most common way to get there. If you’re pushed for time or don’t want to court seasickness on the Drake Passage, you can fly to the South Shetland Islands and join a cruise there. The third and the most spectacular Antarctic journey ever would be to embark in Ushuaia, voyage to Antarctica, and then continue your trip to New Zealand (Bluff). These cruises will generally last 33 days and allow you to explore the eastern side of Antarctica, which the other cruises usually cannot offer.

The Antarctic season is relatively short, from November to March, and what you can expect to find in Antarctica depends on when you travel. December, January, and February are the best months to go in terms of weather. They are the months with high demand to visit Antarctica, and cruises are the most expensive during those times. Prices are cheaper at the begin-

ning and end of the season, but because of the colder weather conditions, there is less to see in the way of wildlife.

November in Antarctica

For photographers, November is the best time. Penguins are mating and nesting and generally at their most active, offering excellent opportunities to snap them on the ice or with snow falling in the background. The weather is colder, so you also will be able to capture images showing incredible ice formations.

March in Antarctica

Look at November and March as the shoulder season for Antarctica. Even though wildlife spotting might be a little more complicated (although still possible) and the temperatures will be a bit colder. You’ll be treated to a few things other visitors won’t see, including stunning ice formations and even sunrises and sunsets (which are nonexistent close to December’s solstice!) Most expedition cruises depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, or Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams in Chile. The first two days

of your navigation will be crossing the famous Drake Passage, where you can experience rough seas due to Antarctica’s natural boundary, formed when north-flowing cold waters collide with warmer sub-Antarctic seas. The shorter trip to the frozen continent lasts 9 to 12 days, taking you to the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. In addition to the Antarctic Peninsula, a more extended trip ensures a visit to the Falkland Islands, crossing the Antarctic Circle, also referred to as a polar circle, and reaching the remote destinations of South Georgia.

You can also visit King George Island, Ernest Shackleton’s legendary Elephant Island, and the Weddell Sea - in search of the Emperor Penguin. Cruises to these destinations are longer trips that last from 12 to 23 days. Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea is the destination most commonly associated with Emperor penguins.

The main activities while you are in Antarctica are the daily shore excursions in small groups in Zodiacs. In these discovery excursions, you will search for wildlife and land on remote beaches. You will visit a penguin colony, walk up a ridge

for panoramic views or hike to see remnants of bygone eras. Depending on when you travel, expect to get up close to the dazzling beauty of grounded icebergs as well as leopard seals lazing on ice floes or even whale sightings. On many expedition cruises, you can choose from various adventure activities to make the most of your time in Antarctica, like polar diving cruises. As if visiting Antarctica is not otherworldly enough, there is a whole other world to explore under the surface of the seas. Antarctic diving reveals a world of ice, where glaciers, gigantic icebergs, and a unique marine life blend will greet you!

Diving under polar waters is like no other dive – the combination of water, sunlight, and ice formations creates an evershifting spectacle of colors. Divers are often surprised by the diversity of wildlife they encounter underwater: a variety of starfish species, sea squirts, squat lobsters, different species of soft crab corals, anemones, peacock worms, dogfish, kelp walls, sea-snails, sea butterflies, multiple species of fish, shrubby horse-tails, jellyfish, and sea-hedgehogs (urchins). You might even have the opportunity to dive with fur seals, leopard seals, or penguins.

Another adventure offered is camping on the ice. One of the most popular activities, camping offers you the unique op-

portunity to roll out your sleeping mat and wriggle into your thermal sleeping bag for a night on the ice – no camping experience necessary. Once you’ve settled in, prepare to witness the stunning beauty of the Antarctica night sky, the sounds of ice cracking in the distance, and wildlife carrying their busy schedule around you.

Some expeditions offer helicopter tours above the ice of the Weddell Sea or the Ross Sea to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Antarctic wilderness. They allow close encounters with marine life, including the Emperor penguin.

Polar cruise kayaking is a fantastic way to slip into the white and blue beauty of the quiet oceans around you. The amount of experience you will need depends on the cruise you choose. Some require no experience, and others expect you to have slightly more.

Ski tours offer keen adventurers a chance to take on some of the world’s most incredible slopes. Experienced skiers can enjoy day trips traversing remote, snow-capped peaks and then descend into pristine bays filled with floating bergs, penguin rookeries, or even breaching whales!

Another great way to explore Antarctica is to take your way inland from the polar shorelines with various treks and hiking

expeditions. For whichever adventure you choose, you would need to be in reasonably good shape and healthy. Hikes usually last between 2 and 6 hours walking where there are no paths, so you will travel over fairly rugged terrain and take on some hills. Usually with cruises, 1 to 3 types of walks are offered per landing ranging from a casual stroll to a challenging hike.

Not all cruises offer these activities, so be careful to choose the correct cruise/dates departures and book in advance because the availability is very limited. Some cruises include these activities in the price, and you can add them at an extra cost for others.

Traveling to Antarctica is difficult to reach and requires an adventurous spirit, but the effort is always well worth the reward! It is an extraordinary trip that will change how you view the world.

Haveyou thought about Turkey lately? A country of about 87 million people, surrounded on the north by the Black Sea, the Marmara Sea between the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles Strait, the Aegean Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean to the south. The combination of mild climate, mountainous scenery, and beautiful beaches along some 8,500 km (5,282 mi) of shoreline make it worth a second look. This year I attended the 4th edition of the TYBA Yacht Charter show @ D Marin Göcek, the only yacht charter show in Turkey and one of the most important events of this kind in the East Med for trade professionals. Organized by the 90 member TYBA Yachting & Brokers Association, the show featured 54 boats of all shapes and sizes, a wonderful opportunity to tour a stunning array of motor yachts, sailing boats and iconic Turkish-built gulets available to charter in the region. Along with hundreds of others, I met the delightfully welcoming captains and crew firsthand while they showcased their yachts and discussed the shipyards they represent, and sampled the chefs’ delicious creations. There was a boat for everyone’s tastes and needs. There were also ancillary products and services on display, workshops offered, and a chance to network

Has pensado en Turquía últimamente?

Set in D-Marin, a full-service natural marina with everything you might need and a short walk from Göcek, a charming town surrounded by mountains which is quickly emerging as the new hot spot for Turkish yachting. The very spot where, according to locals, the mythological Icarus disobeyed his father’s warning and flew too close to the sun on wings made from feathers held together by wax when it melted fell to the sea. It is an up-and-coming destination with plenty of unique shops, good restaurants, and a modern marina only 20 minutes from the Dalaman airport.

Göcek, sits on the Turquoise Coast which is just as stunning as its name suggests (the word turquoise comes from the French for Turkish). It is rich in history, natural beauty and culture making it an ideal sailing destination. It is part of the Aphrodite Route, with favorable weather from April to October, calm seas and historical roots that measurably date back 10 thousand years BC earning it the moniker as a “giant open-air museum”. While there I had the opportunity to take a famed Blue Cruise aboard Derya Deniz a 24-meter motorsailer with 5 cabins

built in 2008 and refitted in 2022. A Blue Cruise or Blue Voyage is a well-worth voyage along the Turkish riviera on the southwestern coast along the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. Our knowledgeable captain, talented chef and attentive crew made it a memorable voyage. Though traditionally synonymous with Bodrum gulets which can be comfortably chartered, you can easily follow craggy coves and inlets in your own vessel to ancient cities, harbors, mausoleums, tombs, and beaches. There are numerous small coves in which to enjoy a glass of the delicious variety of Turkish wines or to moor for the night.

The abundant natural and archaeological points of interest make this stretch of Turkey’s coastline a popular destination for both national and international tourists. It is home to not one but two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: The ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus.

Turkey’s warm hospitality, its rich unique culture and stunning scenery should place at the top of your list for great adventures.

Beppe d’Andrea, Senior Global Brand Ambassador at Ruffino, a world-renowned expert on Italian wines, shared his thoughts on Tuscan varietals from the portfolio and helped Yachting Times curate a fantastic collection of reds from the region.

“Riserva Ducale Oro 1985 is special to me because it was the first vintage I bottled,” explained d’Andrea, who admitted that his first great vintage as cellar master was Riserva Ducale Oro 1990; his absolute favorite.

Founded by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino in 1877, who established a small winery in the town of Pontassieve outside of Florence, the family business and wineries have flourished thanks to the brand’s innovative approach to winemaking as well as its respect for more traditional practices.

As of 2022, Ruffino’s estate vineyards are Biodiversity Friend certified and SQNPI certified— the Italian agriculture gold standard. “We are proud that all Ruffino wines will be certified sustainable by 2025. Through techniques such as precision irrigation farming, we’re making strides in water conservation”, d’Andrea explained. “My favorites are the 2018 Riserva Ducale Oro or the 2016 Romitorio Di Santedame Gran Selezione,” he added.

Other standouts include the Alauda 2018, a Supertuscan, and Brunello di Montalcino Greppone Mazzi 2017. The latter, is an exquisite vintage from a super DOCG, which hails from the estate Greppone Mazzi that lies in the highest and most qualitative part of the Montalcino hill. The impressive 2016 Romitorio di Santedame Gran Selezione (a Chianti Classico) was just released in the U.S. and is an already highly-coveted vintage of many discerning oenophiles.

Of course, the dynamic selection of Tuscan wines runs the gamut, but these prized vintages from Ruffino are an excellent place to start the journey. Viva e Salute.

¡Viva e Salute!
