or the skipper of an amateur sailing team, there are few things more comforting than getting on the boat for the first big regatta of the summer and looking at all the same faces from the previous season. If that previous season also happened to end with a win in the biggest regatta, well, then it’s probably going to be a long regatta for the competition. Such was the case for the Melges IC37 fleet at 167th edition of the New York Yacht Club’s Annual Regatta. Pacific Yankee, co-owned by Drew Freides and Bill Ruh and sailing with the same crew that won the class’s North American Championship last October, was nearly untouchable in the regatta’s two-day weekend series, winning two of four races and taking first overall by seven points. “It was just a fantastic team effort,” says Ruh, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who helmed the boat for this regatta. “And that was what this regatta was all about, to get the team sailing well again after so much time away, and to see if we could continue to get faster in all conditions.” After a long offseason, which followed the COVID-shortened 2020 sailing season, it’s no surprise there was a lot of enthusiasm on the water for the Annual Regatta, which was sponsored by Hammetts Hotel, Safe Harbor Marinas and Helly Hansen. Boats were crowding the starting line in all classes, and nowhere was the intensity as high as the Melges IC37 class.

“It was really about being conservative,” says Ruh, when asked about his starting strategy. “The last thing we wanted to be was over early.” With four races in four different conditions, Paul Zabetakis (Jamestown, R.I.) and his team in Impetuous relied on their 15 years of experience sailing their Swan 42 to give them the edge in ORC C. In addition to the Division win, Impetuous was also named the ORC Overall Winner. “We worked really hard for it,” says Zabetakis, the Vice Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. “One of the things we’ve learned over the years is that the Swan 42 is a heavy boat, you can’t throw it around like a dinghy, you have to keep the boat moving.” “The key was getting a good start and then going four of five minutes without having to do anything, really focusing on straight-line speed.” With four other Swan 42s doing well in ORC C, Zabetakis and his team, including tactician John Mollicone and longtime main trimmer Todd McGuire, always had a reference for their performance during any race; they could almost sail like it was a one-design class. “If all those [Swan 42] teams continue to sail together, it’s just going to get tighter and tighter,” he says. “We had some fairly close mark roundings, where all the 42s were right there. So it was really fun.”

Entourage Côte Provence Rosé was born from a love affair with rosé that Swedish restaurateur Tommy Tollesson developed over the many summers he spent in St. Tropez visiting his friend Gunnar Sachs, son of famous German-born businessman Gunter Sachs. Although the space has an effortless simplicity to it, like much of CLB88, a closer inspection reveals thoughtfully detailed design wherever you look. There is teak decking throughout, which instantly signals the quality of the yacht’s finishing alongside thoughtfully detailed design and premium materials like marble, natural hardwoods, Corian and polished stainless steel. Everywhere you look, the design has been carefully considered to ensure it is practical and ergonomic while also being beautiful. With the focus on experience and lifestyle, a convenient full wet bar on the aft deck provides a space for entertainment with cold storage and a marble-fronted cupboard for glasses and cocktail mixing, while the generous dining table and sofa offer space for everyone to come together and enjoy the surroundings. Walking through full-height sliding doors, there is an effortless blending of the inside and outside as the teak and holly hardwood flooring of the interior continues the visual flow from the exterior teak decking. The living space is reminiscent of a New York loft: clean, elegant and modern but not just trendy. Its timeless feel is warm, relaxing and contemplative rather than minimalist and cold. In approaching CLB88 interior, we used the concept of sunlight as a core construction material, trying to sculpt the space with light, and around the light. Vast windows with narrow mullions invite in splendid views of the seascape to further emphasize a sense of proximity to nature. Overhead, the ceiling mirrors the floor with vertically inlaid teak to draw the eye lengthways and give an increased sense of depth, and it is possible to see the full length of the interior from the threshold. Inset with soft, linear lighting, the edge of the central wood panel curves elegantly upward, overlapping a curved dropped ceiling that conceals vents for a unified and seamless look.

Convenient for after-dinner drinks, the dining area features a wet bar integrated into the starboard cabinetry while there are fantastic views to both sides of the table as well as forward through the galley and across the forepeak via a large hatch. A stylish spiral staircase with hardwood treads leads up to the fly deck and down to the accommodation. The galley is designed in a country kitchen style with a central island, large serving hatch to the dining area and comfortable seating forward to inspire conviviality when the space is in use. For added privacy, especially convenient when CLB88 is used for charter, the elegant sliding glass hatch window and door can be closed to separate the kitchen from the dining and salon area. For practicality, we integrated smart synthetic materials alongside natural ones across the yacht. The galley cabinetry, for example, is finished with Fenix, a nanotechnology material that is pleasingly smooth to the touch as well as scratch resistant and self-repairing.

Storage has been integrated into wood paneling and under seating for added convenience in the cabins. Through seamless surfaces, subtle curves and flowing planes, I wanted to remind people at all times that they are on a ‘vessel’, moving through space and time towards the future. One of the most striking things about the accommodation is how the numerous subtle details and considerations add up to an overall sense of peace and everything being in its right place on CLB88. The ensuite bathrooms are fitted out with Marmara marble from Turkey, which is traditionally used in hammams; its beautiful natural lines echo those of the natural wood, and the master suite features a monochrome black marble floor and shower wall to give it a special, unique touch. The bathroom counter heights match those of the cabinetry in the cabins, while the shape and position of the backlit mirrors in the VIP bathrooms mimic those of the windows in the cabins just a few feet away, providing a visually pleasing symmetry.

The master cabin’s walk-in closet features cedar-lined, illuminated drawers and a full-length mirror, a luxurious touch on a yacht of this size. The sunken leather padding and custom-made boxes for storing jewelry and watches, while underway, offer added reassurance. The premium luxury textile wall panels of each room are slightly different shades of grey, trimmed with stainless steel, to give the cabins a unique character that underlines the quality of craftsmanship onboard. I believe it is these small, understated design touches that elevate CLB88 in terms of effortless luxury onboard. Fly Deck & Fore Lounge Heading up to the fly deck, you get a sense of the real potential for leisure and enjoyment on CLB88. The open space is packed with features and stylish touches typically seen on a much larger yacht. The sit-up wet bar has five ergonomic and stylish stools constructed in marine-grade stainless steel and teak, mirrored in the design of the chaise lounge that provides the perfect spot from which to enjoy relaxed alfresco meals under the well-lit hardtop. There is an expansive aft deck for lounging and sunning with views across the stern. We spared no attention to detail while working on CLB88, including the custom sun loungers that are cleverly stowed by removing the wooden panels and stacking the stainless-steel frames. The second signature helm is accompanied by bench seating,

I especially like how the backrest of the table seating pivots to allow more guests to enjoy views forwards while underway. No potential space for social enjoyment and privacy is lost onboard CLB88. On the foredeck, the fore lounge has one of the best views onboard, with a large sunpad lounging area and sofa with tables making for the perfect sundowner setting. A Hull for Performance and Confident Cruising I was conscious that one of CL Yachts’ most celebrated values is its skill in building exceptionally seaworthy, robust and dependable vessels. With one of the finest riding hulls ever to come from CL Yachts fused with state-of-the-art technology, CLB88 is bred for performance, born for confident cruising and tailored for ultimate comfort. While much of CLB88’s balanced profile and hull form are reminiscent of the brand’s heritage, and a classical flybridge yacht, we carried out a light design edit of its exterior. For example, the lower deck’s windows were reconsidered alongside a refinement of the hull’s spine, while the engine room ventilation inlets were adapted to create a more seamless integration into the hull. As a novel signature element to CLB88’s design DNA, we introduced a ‘reverse kink’ to the fashion boards that will become recognizable across the CL Yachts fleet. There exists a yacht floating in our collective subconscious, perhaps from our childhood dreams, that displays a certain design language and proportions. I wanted to capture that motor yacht, re-envisioned for contemporary times. I hope the exterior design of CLB88 will stimulate the collective memories and imagination of real yachting enthusiasts, without it feeling “retro”; to be something that is subtly edgy and bold, but with an effortless beauty and balance that is timeless.

iving opportunities in Australia are incredibly rich and diverse. What first comes to mind are the beautiful, warm turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Having lived in Australia for years now, I am surprised by how much this destination outshines other wonderful scuba dive spots in the country. Ocean lovers get the chance to witness spectacular mating aggregations of giant cuttlefish in South Australia in winter. At the same time of year, spider crabs aggregate in Port Phillip to seek safety in numbers to moult, a spectacle not to be missed. There are year- round opportunities to come face-to-face with ocean giants such as whales, sharks and rays on the beautiful Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. In Tasmania, divers can enjoy spectacular giant kelp forests, underwater caves and deep-water sponge gardens. New South Wales, on the East Coast of Australia, also offers great diving for all levels and budgets, from easy shore dips to more challenging wreck and boat dives, along more than 2000 kilometres of beautiful coastline. As much as my partner and I enjoy diving around Melbourne’s beautiful Port Phillip, the East Coast is where we wanted to go next for a change of scenery and to experience diving in war-

We had a whole coastal road trip planned out over Christmas and New Year, starting at the bottom of New South Wales and going all the way to the southern-most part of the Great Barrier Reef. We were excited at the opportunity to witness the change in marine life from temperate to tropical waters and enjoy some of the best dive destinations on the East Coast. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced us to change our plans. The frustration of not being able to cross the border with Queensland and reach the tip of the Great Barrier Reef settled in when we decided to use the rest of our time to discover more of New South Wales’ excellent dive sites. I couldn’t possibly cover them all, but you’ll find below an overview of beautiful dive opportunities this state has to offer. Starting from the southern part of New South Wales, we opted to dive at the Merimbula Wharf, which is considered by some as one of the top ten shore dives in Australia. We jumped off

Wobbegong and Port Jackson sharks were undoubtedly the highlights of the dive, but divers here can also enjoy big stingrays, seahorses and generally, an abundant fish life. Next up, we stopped at Narooma, the jewel of the Sapphire Coast and gateway to access Montague Island’s pristine waters. A popular site where you can experience awe-inspiring encounters with playful fur seals all year round and, from November to April, becomes home to one of the southernmost known aggregations of the intimidating yet peaceful grey nurse shark. Bad weather forced us to cancel our dives so we continued the drive north along the picturesque coastline leading to Jervis Bay, another very popular dive destination south of Sydney

where divers can enjoy a range of experiences, including sheltered, shallow dives inside the Bay, and spectacular walls and caves at the base of towering sea cliffs right outside. Because the visibility was average in the Bay, that’s where we headed. We enjoyed glimpses of a few dolphins from the boat on the way to the dive sites and underwater, a different kind of landscape, with swim throughs, ledges and bommies. Here, we encountered our first grey nurse sharks, and the blue groupers that we would regularly enjoy diving with throughout the trip. The fish life was abundant, but we also enjoying spotting sea slugs, colourful sponges, sea squirts and more. Next on our list was one of our favourite stops: Shellharbour. Its Bass Point Reserve includes several spectacular shore dive sites including the “Gutter”, where we discovered impressing marine life like colourful sea slugs, octopuses guarding eggs, a sea spider, some cute cuttlefish and a baby weedy seadragon. There were exciting critters to enjoy wherever we looked, and we were blessed with stunning visibility, which allowed us to fully take in the views of the canyon that runs up west from the entry of the Gutter. About 100 kilometres north, Australia’s largest city, Sydney deserves a separate trip to explore its numerous dive sites found around the city and its spectacular Bays, magnificent sandstone

Because our time was limited, we bypassed Sydney to go to Port Stephens where we experienced amazing shore dives in Nelson Bay and boat dives on Broughton Island. We also enjoyed spotting dolphins from the coast on most days. Our favourite dive was the “Pipeline”, on the western side of the Nelson Bay Marina breakwall, one of Australia’s best muck diving sites where the diversity of critters divers can encounter is mind-blowing. We saw so many cuttlefishes we stopped counting, along with octopuses, pipefishes, seahorses and a variety of sea slugs and more. “Shark Gutters”, on Broughton Island, is the domain of grey nurse sharks and we enjoyed watching dozens of them peacefully cruise along. This is where we also had our best interactions with inquisitive and curious blue gropers. A few hours up the coast, we reached South West Rocks, accessible by boat and famous for dramatic underwater landscapes including gutters and sea caves. This is a great place to spot sharks and other pelagic species, including grey nurse sharks, eagle and cownose rays. But by far the most thrilling dive site for adventurous divers is the 125-meter-long underwater cavern running through the middle of Fish Rock. Covered by corals, sponges and gorgonians, part of this cave runs from 12 to 24 meters above the

surface and is home to an abundant mix of tropical and temperate fish, lobsters, crabs, cowries and sea spiders. Our journey took us to Coffs Harbour next, from where we jumped on a boat to explore South Solitary Island which offers a range of dive sites amongst impressive gutters and swim throughs, rocky walls and boulders. Divers are greeted by schooling pelagic fish including grey nurse sharks and rays, as well as turtles. We encountered our first turtle of the trip there, but we were also delighted by colourful hard and soft corals of various sizes and shapes throughout our dives. A bit more than 200 kms north, Byron Bay’s Julian Rocks is a must-see. The small rocks located within the Cape Byron Marine Park are surrounded by a variety of dive sites suitable for all levels. Where temperate and tropical waters meet, like here, an abundance of marine species flourish, including ocean giants such as whales, dolphins, sharks and rays. I was looking forward to spotting manta rays and leopard sharks, which are present in summer, but the unsuitable conditions at sea decided otherwise. We continued north, stopping just before the border with Queensland. Cook Island is a short ride away from Tweed Heads, a popular holiday town on the banks of the Tweed River. Having been greeted by great visibility, we explored the

Huge turtles, a guitarfish and a variety of other tropical fish and coral species, were other highlights during the couple of dives which concluded our journey northward. Doing a road trip is a great way to enjoy a variety of dive sites along the coast of New South Wales. It allowed us to enjoy the gradual transition between temperate and subtropical waters and an increase in tropical species we were not familiar with. Many dive sites would definitely be worth coming back to and exploring some more, and we are looking forward to returning for more exciting dive experiences.

estled in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea lies a hidden gem, an island coveted by many different countries since the Middle Ages, a place its inhabitants call “Island of Beauties” for its magnificent landscape and unique coastline. Corsica has nothing to envy from its Spanish or Italian neighboring islands. As its nickname indicates, it seems that all beauty has converged into Corsica: sandy beaches and little coves with turquoise water, high rocky-mountains and dense forests, olive groves, charming little villages, red rocks, black rocks, white rock cliffs, wineries and, of course, delicious food, especially when it comes to charcuterie. Corsican pigs, raised mostly in the wild, are fed chestnuts which makes their meat very tasty. Wild boar meat, abundant too, is served in stews and casseroles. Other staples of Corsican cuisine are olive oil and cheese, especially the famous Broccius cheese, often served with chestnuts and figs or as yogurt with honey. Corsica’s history has shaped its culture and architecture into the rich heritage it now offers. It goes as far back as to prehistory. Around 9,000 BC, Mesolithic peoples from Sardinia crossed the Strait of Bonifacio to explore Corsica and exploit the island’s potential for hunting. Once here, they built rudimentary stone structures for shelter, some of which can still be seen today. In the 1st century BC, the island was colonized by the ancient Greeks, and later became a province of the Roman

Empire up until the 5th century AD. The roman language became the foundation of the current Corsican dialect. During the middle age, the state of Pisa took control of Corsica following a long period of invasions from the Moors, who travelled from North Africa to acquire minerals and enslave local people. Legend says that Corsica’s folk would behead invaders and exhibit their heads to scare the attackers, which inspired the black Moor’s head on the Corsican flag still in use today. In the early 14th century, the Genoese invaded the island and ruled until the 18th century. During this period, the famous Genoese towers were built along the coast of Corsica to protect the island from invaders. Eighty-six of them are still standing today all around Corsica. In 1755 a Corsican government was established by nationalist leader Pasquale Paoli who ruled for fourteen years while part of the island remained under Genoese control. Eleven years later the Genoese sold their land rights to France which led to a French takeover of the island. Later that year, the island’s most famous son, Napoleon Bonaparte, was born in the town of Ajaccio. His birth home, located on the Rue Saint Charles, is known as Maison Bonaparte, a three-story structure that remained part of the emperor’s family for over two hundred years, until it was donated to the French government in the 1920’s and later became a national museum.

history. Until the mid-19th century, Sag Harbor was a major international port for the whaling industry. At one point, it became an even bigger commercial harbor than New York City. Whale industry barons soon began building stately homes and beautiful summer residences, some of which are now museums like the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum on Main Street. East Hampton was founded in 1648 by Presbyterian farmers for cultivating, fishing, and some whaling. In the late 19th century, the railroad extended first to East Hampton and then to Montauk, and visitors began to summer here. Wealthy New York families soon built what they called “cottages” but really turned out to be spectacular mansions, many of which are still privately used and have been in the same families for several generations. Montauk is referred to as “The End” and at the tip of Long Island stands the Montauk Point Lighthouse, a national historical landmark. Commissioned by George Washington in 1792 and built in 1796, this beautiful beacon still remains an active aid to navigation today.

Thin dressing with water, adding a little at a time, until similar in consistency to heavy cream; season with salt and pepper. Assemble the salad: Divide the romaine lettuce between two bowls. Top with the strawberries, cucumber, tomatoes, bacon, and blue cheese. Each bowl should receive ½ an avocado, sliced, and two hard boiled eggs, sliced in half. Drizzle with green goddess dressing and serve!
