Today in 2023, eight years into this eventful journey, helping students realise their highest aspirations remains at the heart of Dukes – and it’s still what motivates me and our incredible Board. Throughout my own involvement in finance, the military and sport, I’ve been inspired by many great individuals, and I wanted to give others the same chance to overcome obstacles and succeed.
I was blown away by the recent ‘Leading with Heart’ team conference at Wembley Stadium. The quality of speakers was truly superb but equally your participation and engagement spoke volumes about our team’s continuous drive to keep learning. What really stood out for me was how everyone came together to support the day from the preparation, organising transport (given the train strikes), to the many volunteers at the welcome desk, the care for our guest speakers, to serving each other for lunch. Like the Japanese fans who stayed behind to clean all of the stands at the football World Cup, it’s a clear demonstration of our values. It’s a statement about respect, gratitude and attention to detail. The small things are the biggest indicator of the
big things: our values and culture. For us, the Dukes values of We love learning, alongside We lead with heart, We’re a team and We do it well were clearly evident on that day and can also be seen across this annual report. As the saying goes, culture eats strategy for breakfast. And despite our meteoric growth, I am so so pleased the culture of Dukes is shining bright.
This report gives a small insight into the exceptional work that goes on across the group. Congratulations to you and particularly to our pupils. I am constantly impressed and inspired by all the individuals from all across the Dukes family who have gone above and beyond. The annual awards 2022 saw a record level of nominations, which highlights the culture of high performance and inspiring stories we have. There are so many wonderful stories of academic success, pastoral brilliance and co-curricular variety that is enriching a child’s education across our schools. I am particularly pleased with the launch of the Dukes Club, rebranding of Little Dukes and Dukes Plus, the continuous growth of the learning & development programmes and engagement in the Dukes Hub (which I hope will have a physical space later this
In 2015, Dukes Education was founded with a simple mission – to provide young people with an education that would allow them to achieve their true potential. We wanted the education to be not only good but extraordinary.
year!), our investment into the Dukes Foundation and sustainability promises.
While our mission is simple, making it a reality however can be complex. Education is a multifaceted process that begins at birth and never ends. Indeed it’s increasingly understood that children need support throughout their entire infancy and youth to really achieve their best as adults. That’s why Dukes now covers every age
group from birth to 18 years, across a variety of Little Dukes settings, schools, colleges and Dukes Plus. It’s our breadth and depth in the quality of provision and exceptional people that makes us unique amongst our competitors. The all-through model, relentless focus on the pupil, long-term thinking with a decentralised structure empowering each of the settings to be the very best they can be is genuinely distinctive.
This is the model where our focus will lie over the coming years.
We have set about five strands to our flywheel being:
How we re-invest into our educational settings, the Dukes Foundation and sustainability initiatives
Ensuring we have the right structures, resources and settings to succeed
Making our teaching and learning experience for our pupils extraordinary
Providing exceptional customer ser vices
Caring, supporting and rewarding our most important asset
To play a part in the future of so many young people is a tremendous privilege; it’s also a huge honour to work alongside such an extraordinary family of expert educators. Without the experience, knowledge and skills of our fantastic leaders and teachers, spread over 43 institutions, the Dukes family would not be able to inspire our students and parents in the same way. They come to us because they believe in what we offer: the best educational support at any age. It is by honouring that promise in the years ahead that we will continue to succeed – and take our group to great heights.
We have a clear strategy to fulfil our ambitious vision. With what I have witnessed over the last 12 months,
I am seriously excited about this year. It’s time to be brave, face the elements and thrive. We remain humble and with a desire to do better. I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead this organisation, so a big ‘thank you’.
Let’s go! Welcome to 2023!
Aatif Hassan Chairman & Founder of DukesGong Xi Fa Cai! Happy Chinese and Lunar New Year from Miss Daisy’s! The children at Miss Daisy’s have been learning all about the traditions and celebrations of the Chinese and Lunar new year. They discovered how our friends and family in China and around the world celebrated, and took part in a Dragon dance. As it is the Year of the Rabbit, we also welcomed some cute friends into the nursery.
Riverside Nursery Schools Twickenham Park nursery have recently started offering Forest School sessions, every Wednesday, for our 3 and 4 year olds. Our Forest School Leader, Scott, has been getting to know the children and providing them with all of the knowledge they need to explore the curriculum in a safe way. It has been a real joy to see the children so excited about outdoor learning, and has supported their fine motor skills whilst using the tools and techniques Scott has shown them. It has also been a great way to get the children working as part of a team, and using their skills to problem-solve.
At The Kindergartens, we are taking part in the RSPB’s ‘Big Garden Bird Watch’. We are supporting this exciting project, and encouraging the children in our care to think about the changing world around them. By supporting this initiative in 2023, we are helping our children to understand what they can do to reverse the declining bird population and help look after the world for birds in the future. As part of the project, we will be observing and documenting the birds we see in our nursery gardens and parks and helping the RSPB to track and understand how UK birds are doing.
A new nursery in the Hopes and Dreams family opened at Old Street over the summer, and has truly become a part of the local community in such a short space of time.
The setting has been designed to fully facilitate the Montessori early years approach, and combines stylish interiors with the exceptional care and education our Nursery Practitioners are known for at their sister nursery in Angel.
The spaces are beautifully bright and airy, with natural light flooding in to create amazing spaces to play and learn. Each resource and piece of equipment has been chosen to enhance the environments, as well as give children open-ended learning opportunities.
Magda Zurawska, our Nursery Manager said: “The nursery is beautiful and I’m delighted to be leading the team here at Old Street. We’ve been involved in the design right from the early stages and advised exactly how we wanted the rooms to look. The resources have been carefully chosen to provide rich opportunities for learning and development.”
Reflections have introduced music specialists who visit the children every week.
They love exploring the rhythms and beats they can make, as well as the instruments themselves with such an array of shapes and sizes.
We have been experimenting with sound, and how the children respond to what they hear. There has been lots of opportunities for
mark-making to music as well as moving our bodies to sound. We also explore the cultural significances of certain instruments, their history and the types of music they make.
Hove Village were delighted to contribute several fun pieces of apparatus and play equipment to the newly refurbished playground at their community park, Wish Park. Many local families enjoy the park, so it seemed only right that they helped to make it the best outdoor space it can be. The nursery at New Church Road backs onto Wish Park directly and a new access gate has been provided to allow the children to visit the park even more easily. This has really helped to extend the opportunities for learning outside of the nursery garden, and help the children explore their local green spaces. The high quality equipment will be enjoyed by Hove’s children for years to come.
In the summer term of 2022, Bassett House School very proudly launched the latest and most exciting edition to their curriculum: horse riding. In partnership with Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre, we have carefully curated lessons to form part of the children’s ‘living curriculum’, which allows pupils to ride both real and mechanical horses, learn about all aspects of horsemanship, as well as groom and care for the horses. For our older pupils, this is also an opportunity to take their learning outside of the classroom and discover more about animal science and physiology.
The launch has been a huge success with both pupils and parents alike, and we feel incredibly fortunate to be able to offer this rare and invaluable opportunity for our children.
Lola, Naomi and Leila visited Dukes Education HQ after Lola won the opportunity to be ‘Chairman for the Day’ at our PTA Fair. Mr Hassan welcomed them saying how delighted he was to step aside for the day and tasked them with a full day’s work of thorny issues and tricky decisions to consider. The girls took over the main boardroom, together with the Dukes marketing team, and got down to
business thrashing out recommendations they recorded in a video report for the Board. The day included an intense working lunch with the Chairman at the Rainforest Cafe, before being chauffeur-driven back to school.
Year 1 travelled to Egypt as part of their thematic topic. The school was full of explorers, archaeologists, mummies, Egyptian queens and even Howard Carter, who discovered Tutankhamen’s tomb. Thanks to all the teachers and teaching assistants who made it such a fantastic day.
With almost too many events to choose between, a highlight from the CBPPS calendar for 2022 has to be our Diversity Week celebrations. Taking place in the autumn term, it was a fun-filled week of workshops, assemblies, talks and more. The children took part in global dance workshops where they learnt some moves from a variety of traditional dances including the Hula, Viennese Waltz, Irish dancing and the Haka. We created a school cook book containing recipes from around the world with over 20 countries represented. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting our guest parent speakers who gave highly informative talks about different countries and cities from around the world. Our parent reps worked with every pupil to take a photograph of their eyes, which will be used in a giant collage soon to be on display in the school, to celebrate the uniqueness of each child. Each pupil enthusiastically took part in our dressing up day, wearing either the traditional dress or the colours of their families’ national flags to celebrate the rich diversity of our CBPPS community. We rounded off the week with a fantastic food fair which saw the hall filled with delicious global dishes made by parents and pupils. A big ‘thank you’ to all who took part.
Devonshire House School’s Festival Choir took part in an exciting trip to Prague, Czech Republic in October 2022. They spent four days in Prague, performing in various emblematic venues of the city such as St Nicholas Church, St Salvatore’s Church, St Martin-in-the Wall Church and Czech Museum of Music.
After practising for weeks, they landed in Prague and went straight to their first performance
venue: the Czech Museum of Music. After a quick tour when pupils discovered lots of old instruments, Marley, Year 8, said: “We got into our performance outfits and it was show time!” After each song, the audience burst into a massive field of clapping.
The performances included the choir singing in harmony, a violin solo, some brilliant duets and musical interludes. The pupils’ favourite venue was St Martin-in-thewall, which “had the most beautiful crown chandelier”, according to Sophia in Year 6.
The trip also included some cultural visits to The Old Town including the Jewish quarter, The Old Town Square with the famous Prague clock tower, Prague Castle, St Vitus Cathedral and a boat tour on the river.
Devonshire House School’s Festival Choir is continuously performing for different audiences! Recently, they sang at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
The Eaton Square Prep School Swim squad continued to triumph at national level throughout 2022.
At the 2022 English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) Finals, Eaton Square secured the ultimate title of ‘Best Overall School’ in their category, alongside the sought-after ‘Freestyle Relay’ and ‘Mixed Stroke Medley’ titles. At the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Swim Finals 2022, Eaton Square swimmers won an outstanding total of five medals: 2x Gold, 2x Silver and 1x Bronze).
To reach the finals for both leagues is, in itself, a truly phenomenal achievement. To secure so many podium positions, is exceptional.
The goal of the competition is to create an original artistic piece that focuses on an area of scientific study, be it an organism, cell, or apparatus.
There were some fabulous entries from Biology enthusiasts ranging from small-scale digestive systems in the form of collages that made use of different types of fabric, candies and beads, to a life-size model of the popstar Justin Bieber that showcased his digestive organs.
To coincide with Biology Week, Eaton Square Senior students took part in the Royal Society of Biology’s Annual Art Attack Competition.
In partnership with charity Their Future Today, Hampton Court House hosted The Sapphire Ball in September 2022, raising over £53,000 for the charity’s work with children, families and under-privileged communities in Sri Lanka.
Their Future Today was founded by Lynn Stanier MBE and her son Joel, an Old Courtier. As a former parent and Friend of HCH, Lynn has worked with HCH for many years on a number of projects and events to raise money and awareness to end the institutionalisation and suffering of vulnerable children disadvantaged through poverty in Sri Lanka. Together, Their Future Today and Hampton Court House have raised over half a million pounds since their partnership began over a decade ago.
The glittering event was opened by Her Excellency Saroja Sirisena, High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the crowd was entertained by DJ Benny Blanco into the early hours. In attendance was Dragon’s Den’s Richard Farleigh, who generously donated an experience at his private members’ club Home House, Portman Square which promptly provoked a bidding war during the charity auction. Sir Richard Branson’s donation of a stay at his luxury Moroccan mountain mansion and a signed limited edition print from Dan Hillier also attracted some serious bids!
Following the cancellation of the Young Voices concerts at the O2 Arena due to COVID-19, Heathside School Hampstead refused to let parents and children down, so organised their very own Heathside Young Voices concert in March. The concert, held at the beautiful Hampstead Parish Church, was a celebration of spring and the first large-scale gathering of parents and children for a very long time.
The concert featured songs by each year group, and the newly formed chamber choir, poetry from Years 5 and 6 and a performance from each school’s instrumental groups: strings, wind and brass, and guitar. It was a
wonderful way to mark new beginnings, the arrival of spring and to bring the whole Heathside community together once again.
Early in December, Knightsbridge School had the pleasure of the company of a number of guests from the Eleanor House care home and our Seniors entertained them all by serving them a delicious Christmas lunch prepared by Chef Alan and the incredible kitchen team. The Show Choir sang carols for them and Miss Fran and Miss Emma held a fun raffle and wonderful prizes were won by all.
“We were delighted to welcome residents from local care homes to school for a Christmas lunch and carols last week. The KS pupils served our guests lunch before joining them to find out more about their lives as diplomats, translators, television producers and many more interesting and diverse jobs. The KS pupils were interested, engaging and excellent ambassadors for the school.” Ms Shona, Head of KS.
and the general feeling is one of excitement and anticipation about the opening and what this new school will be able to offer the pupils of Clapham and the surrounding area.
We were delighted to announce to the market our plans for a new senior school for Clapham opening in September 2023.
LPS Clapham will be located in two beautiful Victorian mansion buildings, minutes from Clapham South tube station and opposite the Common. The buildings are Grade II listed, and are being sensitively and sustainably renovated over the course of the year in preparation for our first cohort to start in September 2023.
LPS Clapham is the first of a number of schools under the LPS banner. Each school will be relatively small, with its own Head, its own staff and own identity, but they all share common values and ethos. The pupils and staff will join together for occasional activities and initiatives, so benefiting from the scale of a large school. LPS Clapham pupils will also have virtually guaranteed access to the new London Park Sixth Form, planned for Belgravia within two years.
Following our announcement, we have welcomed over 300 prospective parents to open days
A powerful partnership has grown between Lyceum School and St Vincent’s, a school for students with sensory impairment and other needs in Liverpool. After meeting at the Dukes Poetry Together event last year, Lyceum was invited to visit St Vincent’s. In the summer term, Lyceum pupils in Year 6 attended a week-long residential that aimed to give them some insight into life as a young person with sensory impairment. In Liverpool they learned to navigate life as a blind person, learned to play sports blindfolded and were taught braille by their new friends. The week then culminated in a wonderful joint music concert.
Rainbow Mbugani, a blind footballer who Lyceum students met at St Vincent’s, then visited the Year 6 students at school in London where he led an assembly to share the learnings from their visit to Liverpool. Mbugani plays for the England Blind Football team and shared with pupils his dream to take part in the next Paralympics. He coached the Lyceum football team for a session and very kindly donated his England shirt to the school.
Our boys from Northcote Lodge and girls from Broomwood Upper School enjoyed a fantastic Co-Ed Curricular Day, where ‘Energy in everyday life’ was the theme and there was plenty of energy on display – including in the playgrounds! Everyone loved visiting the different school sites and it was a wonderful opportunity to collaborate, reconnect and make new friends. Our boys and girls were able to attend workshops together, helping to develop active learning, communication and decision-making.
It was a great example of one of the many ways we try and maintain the best of both worlds within our school community, as we look forward to joining our three schools (Northcote Lodge; Broomwood Upper School; Broomwood Lower School) under the one name, ‘Broomwood’ in September 2023.
#BeYourBest #Broomwood
At Orchard House School, we relish the idea of sharing the achievements of our pupils and championing their success! Last year Chloe, (then Form 2) was chosen from thousands of applicants to be featured in The Royal Academy of Arts Young Artist’s Summer Show which was displayed in the Academy itself, featured online and in their catalogue.
The theme, My First Art Teacher, was a moment to celebrate young people’s creativity and to thank those who inspire and teach them. We are very grateful to Mr J L Alcaraz-Gomez, MSc(Hons)(Madrid) CertEd(Madrid), for his continuous enthusiasm and devotion to inspiring the pupils at Orchard House School!
After the 11+ process has come to an end, our Year 6 children take part in a bespoke transition programme to make the adjustment to secondary school easier on multiple levels. The aim is to provide a greater level of knowledge, independence and confidence for the students. In addition to a plethora of enjoyable school trips, the programme has four strands: The first strand focuses on Heads of Year 7 together
with ex-pupils from Prospect House coming in to talk about moving up to secondary school. Secondly, there are workshops about financial responsibility covering money, debt, bills, stocks and shares. For the third strand we have wide-ranging discussions about how to have a healthy relationship with social media including the benefits and pitfalls of various platforms. Finally, we concentrate on independent travel around London: representatives from TfL come in to talk about modes of transport and navigation before the students go off in small groups to put this into practice! The programme was a huge success in 2022 and we are looking forward to continuing this in 2023 and beyond.
We’re extremely delighted to be one of the first independent schools to become a Peter Jones Enterprise Academy School. The partnership will form one of the building blocks for life skills at our new Kneller Hall School and help develop ‘Dynamic Entrepreneurs’ that will become drivers of growth and the lifeblood of the local, national and global economy. The mission is to unleash young people’s entrepreneurial talent by giving them the opportunity to ‘learn by doing’.
The Radnor House Enterprise Academy will act as a hub for outstanding enterprise provision, where students receive pioneering support to start real businesses and enhance skills in enterprise and entrepreneurship.
The ‘hands-on’ enterprise opportunities will provide our pupils the experience, skills and knowledge needed to build long, successful careers and is a fantastic addition to our extra curricular provision. Entrepreneurship has become a dynamic force in the world economies and will become even more critical given the rapid changes in the last few years.
Peter Jones CBE commented: “I’m absolutely delighted to announce this opportunity for Radnor House to host a Peter Jones Enterprise Academy. I believe all young people deserve a bright future and I started the Foundation with a clear goal: to improve young people’s lives. Good enterprise education is an essential element of this and should be part of all schools”.
Plans are well underway for the opening of Twickenham’s newest prep school, Radnor House Prep School. Radnor Prep will take over Pope’s Villa when Radnor senior moves to its majestic new home, Kneller Hall, in September 2023. Head, Stephanie Piper, has been blown away by the reception in the local community. 262 families registered for the autumn term Open Days with a total of 130 applications so far for entry in the school’s first year of opening. Radnor Prep will provide pupils with an exceptional, forward-thinking prep education with the added benefit of the facilities of a much larger senior school. Few schools have
a more stunning location than Pope’s Villa, right on the banks of the River Thames, and Radnor Prep pupils will benefit from all the extra space and outstanding facilities, both inside and outside. These include newly refurbished facilities such as a fantastic new theatre, library, music suites, three specialist STEAM rooms, and break-out spaces for independent learning.
At The Pointer School, our school council voted on how they wanted to celebrate the life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Fittingly, they chose that every child in the school should make their own corgi to create a parade of corgis outside the school to celebrate the Queen and her passionate love of animals.
Each child worked hard on their creation, the result was an eye-catching display, it was a pleasure to watch the children excitedly picking out the corgi with their own message on to show their parents outside both our lower and upper schools.
Last term, Sancton Wood welcomed guest speakers from across a wide and varied range of professions to attend their first ever Careers Convention at the Senior School. Drawing on the school’s network they were able to offer talks on 19 different career options from Artificial Intelligence to Medicine, Finance to Filmmaking. InvestIN and Magoo Giles from Knightsbridge School also gave keynote speeches.
Not only did the experts give context to how students’ learning is applied practically in industry, but they were a huge source of inspiration for them when considering their own career paths. The students were highly engaged and asked brilliant questions.
It was an incredible day and another step towards ensuring that their students are fully equipped and ready to take on the next steps in their bright futures.
The school began by participating in the Hour of Code, the world’s biggest coding event, and then continued working on programming skills during some weeks after the event. This was followed by the European Cyber-security Month, where we explored topics of cyber-security, digital citizenship and “netiquete” through a variety of activities. Tinkercad came next, an online 3D design platform, where we learnt how to create and manipulate 3D objects, as well as export them and prepare them for 3D printing. The students love learning about cutting edge technology.
In October, seven pupils from the newly opened Eaton Square Sixth Form, visited DLD College to take part in a business enterprise competition.
In mixed teams the students were set a variety of business-related challenges and had to come up with a fresh idea and a business plan. This year the focus was on festivals: every year over 40,000 tents get left at festivals, most of which go straight in landfill, which is clearly a huge waste.
The task was to design an all-weather poncho using material from waste tents, that could be sold to festival goers throughout the UK. In teams, students had to produce a mock-up of their poncho and put together a business plan which included production costs, projected sales and branding.
The winning team included three Eaton Square students who designed a handbag that could be converted into a poncho. It was a fantastic, fun afternoon for all who attended and gave our students some fantastic realworld business and marketing experience.
Cardiff Sixth Form College Cambridge opened in September with the goal of delivering the same
high standard of education provided to students in the Cardiff ‘mothership’ while taking advantage of the educational opportunities available to students in Cambridge. This term saw the launch of ‘The Cambridge Edge’ – a programme of activities that take students out of the classroom and into the university, industry and the local community. Projects so far have included: mentoring by former Cardiff students who are now Cambridge University undergraduates; conducting projects and giving talks in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science; attending university lectures and one-to-one conversation with the lecturers; discussing the COVID-19 vaccine with scientists from AstraZeneca; observing the moons of Jupiter through the telescope at the university’ observatory; becoming full members of the university’s library and planning the construction of a nuclear fusion ‘fusor’ with scientists from the university fusion department.
A 17th-century bottle, discovered at Rochester Independent College during an excavation 17 years ago, has been identified as a rare anti-
witchcraft device. Experts say the ‘witch bottle’ was used by someone who believed they had been cursed. The Museum of London Archaeology who verified the find, said the stoneware vessel would be filled with a person’s hair or urine. It would also contain objects thought to protect an individual from magic, such as pins, thorns or nails, and it would be placed somewhere in the person’s house. Inspired by the historical find, Rochester Year 7 students made their own ‘witches bottles’ from clay.
St Andrew’s has launched an Environmental and Sustainability Society to promote environmental awareness amongst pupils, conduct sustainability projects and to examine individuals’ carbon footprint. Initiatives have included promoting sustainable living, calculating each student’s carbon footprint, a Go Green calendar, designing biodegradable confetti and sustainable Christmas decorations. The students have also entered The Earth Prize and won participation certificates in Unifrog’s Save the Planet Week.
Earlscliffe’ s inaugural Supper Club invited industry leaders and alumni Dr Toyin Okitikpi, Head of Social work at LSBU, Kathryn Haylett, Wildlife Safari Photographer, Matthew Cove, Senior Software Engineer, uMed and Irina Soiou , Earlscliffe alumna and Year 3 Medical student at UCL to informally network with students. The Head Boy spoke on the Power of Discipline and all enjoyed a delicious supper.
Hampstead Fine Arts has spent a year creating a stunning video entitled A Year in the life of a Student. George Selley, an ex-student, ex-tutor and professional filmmaker, came once a month into the college, interviewed students and then edited together to show five students’ progress and life at the college. youtube.com/watch?v=if7Wb7NZIok
Our senior schools provide outstanding fine arts programmes. Students are given opportunities to express their ideas and creativity in a wide range of media.
Rochester Independent College recently won the coveted award of ‘Top Independent School for Excellence and Innovation in Fine Arts’. Here is a snapshot of the amazing work that students from across Dukes are creating.

Around two years ago, during the various COVID-19 lockdowns and school closures, the team at Cardiff Sixth Form College set upon a new, invigorating project: to devise and deliver ways for future generations of students at Cardiff Sixth Form College to have access to our inspirational bank of alumni, through the power of face-to-face mentorship.
Last month Cardiff Sixth Form College set up their inaugural mentorship programme between their
On 18th June, we had our first alumni wedding, Daian and Malika got married in Malika’s home country of Uzbekistan. Daian and Malika met when they started with us at Cardiff Sixth Form College in 2018 and have been in love ever since. Since leaving Cardiff Sixth From College in 2020 they have faced life together, including the challenges of university and COVID-19, but their relationship has gone from strength to strength. We are very proud to have been a part of this true love story. Andrei, another of our alumni, was honoured to be a part of this special day and stand beside Daian as his best man. It was important to Daian and Malika to have as many of their fellow Cardiff Sixth Form College alumni as possible present at their wedding so they also had a ceremony in London earlier this summer.
Year 12 students in their new CSFC Cambridge campus and long-standing CSFC Cardiff alumni. It was kicked off with a special evening where the mentors were introduced to their mentees sharing stories, advice and could hear about the amazing successes of the CSFC alumni.
As this special programme grows from strength to strength over the coming terms, we cannot wait to welcome CSFC alumni, both new and old, to join us!
As some of our alumni missed out on their Graduation Ball due to the pandemic, Cardiff Sixth Form College held a special event for all 2020 and 2021 leavers. This exclusive event took place at the wonderful Eaton Square Senior School in the centre of London. The special evening consisted of drinks and canapés, dancing and games, as well as the opportunity to catch up with some of our valued members of staff and have their photos take in the CFSC photobooth.
A vital part of building our alumni community is communication. Our alumni platform allows us to continue to foster relationships with members of the Cardiff Sixth Form College family even after they have left us, providing a forum to share news and connect with peers.

We are delighted to offer all Dukes students an exclusive opportunity to become career-ready before they leave school.
Dukes Plus will provide all Dukes students in Years 10 & 12 with a bespoke careers curriculum and provide an assessment and certificate of career-readiness for all participants.
The Little Dukes central team is now in place, and working collaboratively to ensure all areas of Operations, Finance, Marketing, Admissions and HR/Recruitment are supported within each of our nursery brands. Regular reporting across all areas now allows us to manage FTE pipeline in line with costs and staffing, ensuring our settings can respond strategically to growth opportunities.
This year will see our first Little Dukes branded nurseries open, responding to high demand for quality early education and childcare with an industry-leading proposition for parents. A brand refresh will coincide with Little Dukes having a physical presence in key locations, as well as a bespoke early years curriculum which will be first of its kind within Dukes Education.
This exciting curriculum which is being formed by senior team members from
within the Dukes Education family, focuses on: well-being, facilitating excellent opportunities for learning, parent partnerships, and utilising technology that supports each child’s developmental needs, alongside the EYFS - and will truly elevate our early years proposition.
There are currently 1,494 children in attendance across all Little Dukes nurseries as of January 2023, with an average booking pattern of 0.6FTE.
Ongoing investment into recruitment with the launch of a new ‘Careers at Little Dukes’ brand, and into our employee proposition and benefits offer, will further ensure our settings become employers of choice within their local communities and unlock additional capacity.
Miss Daisy’s Hyde Park achieved a hugely well-deserved ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted following their inspection in November 2022. A planned upgrade to the classrooms at Hyde Park in Q1/ Q2 will further enhance their exceptional teaching and learning.
Miss Daisy’s Belgravia continues to attract new families and is already seeing a healthy pipeline for 2024/2025 registrations. The recent relocation and refurbishment has attracted multiple stories in the local and industry press, receiving very positive feedback.
Miss Daisy’s Brook Green will shortly be moving to a new location, as it joins The Brook Green Kindergarten – creating an attractive proposition for local families. A programme of investment and improvements to resources will follow this acquisition over the summer term.
Miss Daisy’s Chelsea continues to operate a waiting list and is currently full through 2023.
Miss Daisy’s Knightsbridge is working on improvements to resources and environments with open days planned throughout the year to showcase the changes.
Hopes and Dreams Angel continues to impress local families with its excellent facilities, outdoor space and strong ethos in Montessori teaching and learning. A pipeline of events, such as open days, parent Q&As and coffee mornings is improving awareness of the setting and links with The Lyceum School are providing a strong footfall of families with younger siblings.
Hopes and Dreams Old Street is attracting a strong following of parents who are looking for convenience and proximity to excellent transport links. The setting is now in its eighth month and is occupied ahead of budget with a strong future pipeline, FTE increasing significantly in Q2 2023.
Our newest member of the Little Dukes family, Hove Village nurseries continue to be top rated settings along the South coast. Regular events and coffee mornings have helped to build a strong community, with current and future occupancy strong throughout the year.
A new setting, due to open in summer 2023, expands the Hove Village group to four settings and will provide much-needed extra capacity in Kemptown. Our new beach-front nursery will provide a contemporary new space for preschool children and older toddlers to enjoy an education that focuses on outdoor learning and a first of its kind ‘Beach School’ curriculum.
A robust programme of improvements at Reflections nursery, supported by Jo Allen from The Kindergartens, is ensuring the setting is supported in all aspects of operations. Staff training is ongoing and a review of EYFS delivery is already providing significantly improved outcomes.
The team is currently revising the nursery proposition for parents in Worthing, and responding to the high demand for baby spaces in the local area.
The Park SW2 and Pooh Corner W8 Kindergartens both achieved ‘Outstanding’ ratings in their Ofsted inspections in October and November 2022, continuing The Kindergartens record of all settings being awarded this highest recognition.
Pooh Corner SW7 Kindergarten received a beautiful new look this year, with all new resources and redecoration throughout, which has been received extremely well by existing and new families looking to join the setting.
The Kindergartens are planning to introduce some new propositions for parents in the coming months, responding to demand and feedback from families. A pipeline of further improvements at each setting is currently being worked on, as well as extended opening hours in selected nursery schools and greater flexibility of care to support working parents. We are also looking to increase the value here for parents with children’s food, inclusive extracurricular activities, and
wraparound care being scoped to help elevate our offering.
This year will see us launch parent and baby clubs within selected nursery school catchments, extending the knowledge, advice and guidance that our registered families rely on, to the wider community. This initiative looks to ensure the nurseries remain active in their local neighbourhoods and benefit from friend and family recommendations.
Another hugely successful year for Riverside Nursery Schools has seen demand continue to increase for our year-round settings in particular. Ongoing investment into resources and environments is providing enhanced opportunities for learning and high satisfaction ratings from parents.
The teams have also had some fantastic results following Ofsted inspection in 2022, with Holly Road Twickenham Green achieving ‘Good’, and St Margarets Montessori being rated ‘Outstanding’.
We are excited to shortly be launching a suite of online resources to support families and extend the amazing teaching and learning from our nurseries, to home.

A number of local Cambridge schools and proud grandparents attended the event, too, and everyone who came enjoyed poetry workshops with both Lucy Cuthew and Joseph Coelho.
Three lucky winners from that day were chosen to perform their poems on live TV on Remembrance Day 11 November, on ITV’s This Morning alongside Gyles Brandreth.
The first ever Poetry Together Poetry Writing competition was a huge hit this year. This new addition to the Poetry Together initiative saw more than 500 school pupils and senior citizens submit their own short poem on the theme of Laughter & Tears.

We are delighted to share details of the Dukes Champions initiative with you and hope you are as excited as us about the benefits that this can bring to the Dukes family. The Champions initiative began its pilot in 2020 and has grown at an extraordinary rate ever since.
One of the core benefits to being part of the Dukes family is our ability to collaborate, share and learn with other members of the family. This collaboration is driven and fostered by the Dukes Champions.
The Champions cover a wide range of areas including teaching specialities as well as others such as well-being, mindfulness, and operations-focussed areas.
Our champions support subject communities by facilitating innovation and learning.
The champions host termly TeachMeets that offer the opportunity to network by bringing the community together. During the TeachMeets, employees can share new thinking, establish best practice, share concerns, and solve problems together.
The champions also collate and curate resources and publish them in a dedicated folder on the Dukes Hub. The Dukes Hub is our online content and communication platform which enables us to share best practice and collaborate beyond face-to-face. It is the store of the best educational material and content across the Dukes family.
You can get in touch with the Dukes champions by contacting them on their work email address. They will then add you to their contact list to ensure you don’t miss any top tips or networking opportunities.
Look out for upcoming TeachMeets and subject INSETS. Register on the Dukes Hub and check out the resources that have been shared.
Our champions welcome your contribution and collaboration – maybe share your top resource or best practice tips.

It includes addressing pressing matters such as the climate emergency, biodiversity loss, marine pollution, unemployment, and inequality. The lower the priority society places on addressing these matters, the greater both the compounded effect on the inability of the environment to continue to provide services that support life and the cost implication of righting affect we are having on future generations.
Education has a pivotal role in enabling a mindset that:
Truly understands the interconnectivity between human society and the negative impacts it creates on the environment through pollution and over consumption, and societal progress through lack of education, inequality and exploitation
Innovates and takes action to put right negative impacts and enhance the capability of the environment and human society
Dukes is passionate about sustainability; it is a key aspect of our value to lead from the heart, and it will be a golden thread across the group. We have implemented a new quarterly reporting process so the Board has greater oversight of sustainability performance.
A new policy has been adopted which commits us to achieving Net Zero ahead of 2050 and adopting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) by incorporating them into our plans.
After our colleges successfully achieving Planet Mark Certification in 2022, we have set ourselves a challenging target of achieving Planet Mark Certification across all of our settings by the end of 2023.
Sustainable development is about meeting the needs of the current population without negatively affecting future generations accessing what they need.
Our case studies are examples of our sustainability work in 2022 and showcase the breadth and depth of the sustainability agenda.
During 2022, our five colleges all achieved Planet Mark certification.
They also took part in Dukes Sustainable Career Weeks which raises awareness of the types of jobs that are included in the growing field of sustainability. In addition to hearing from industry experts in after-college lectures, 54 of them attended The Engineering Design Institute and built scooters out of waste paper, which they then test drove.
Many people feel that nursery aged children are too young to understand about the natural world, but at Miss Daisy’s that is exactly what they learn about as the curriculum is designed to include lessons on all of the United Nations Sustainable Development goals from inequality and intergenerational learning to pollution. The children are Ambassadors and have their say on what is important and what different topics mean to them.
Both Miss Daisy’s and Eaton House Nursery have a focus on waste and recycling and zero food waste. At Eaton House Nursery, the children even shout out ‘zero waste’ if they finish all their food as a way of celebrating their achievement.
Many of our nurseries, schools and colleges include sustainability in curriculum to create awareness of the challenges we face, like waste and recycling, inequality, food waste, air pollution and energy efficiency.
At Sancton Wood, the curriculum is citizen-based and includes human rights, wellness, diversity, equity, work-life balance, empowerment and the value of community engagement, philanthropy and volunteerism. Following an application for solar photovoltaics, the children are also experiencing the application process from start to installation.
Our children are involved in sustainability as members of our Eco or Citizen Councils and Sustainability or Eco Committees. From our nurseries to colleges more than nine of these pupil bodies decide which aspects of sustainability they want including in the programme for the year which they help implement.
In 2023, a staff Champions Network will be established to provide support in implementing sustainability plans through engagement with our children and collaboration with colleagues.
A shared folder of resources is in development to support this with aligned staff learning and development opportunities and communication briefs.
Eaton Square Preparatory School won the company sustainability award this year. They were awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag in July 2022 and have an active eco-committee with children helping to drive the agenda. Our two staff champions have continued to work with our children and colleagues to actively change practices within the school to make the school increasingly more sustainable. Programmes this year have included waste and recycling, zero waste food, an innovative 10-point energy plan to improve energy efficiency, a trashion show to highlight fashion’s environmental impacts, a gardening club and an active travel plan that involved talking to Mums for Lungs and the local authority.
Our sustainability champion at Devonshire House has delivered some outstanding work this year with the pupil Ambassadors. This has included raising awareness through visiting a Veolia material recycling facility and buying a Terracycle bin for waste crisp packets as part of a drive to both produce less and recycle more wastes.
The air pollution station sited outside the school has been used by the Ambassadors to support active travel and reduce idling of cars dropping off and collecting children, which led to the school receiving a TfL STARS Gold award.
So empowered, one of the children even wrote a passionate letter asking for a dripping tap to be fixed to reduce water loss including a calculation of how much water was being lost as part of his persuasive writing.
Recognising we cannot make the transition to low carbon on our own, last year our children took an active role in their communities by talking to local environmental groups and campaigners about air pollution, climate change and waste. They engaged with local authorities and MPs to gain support in creating positive change and wrote to inspiring people to encourage them to come into our schools to share their thoughts with our children.
Knightsbridge School decided to rid itself of plastic glitter and repurposed this using a local plastic recycling specialist, whilst Earlscliffe switched its cleaning products and introduced new bins to better support waste segregation for recycling, and the Lyceum introduced meat-free Mondays with its catering provider.
This year we are creating a curriculum and non-curriculum education programme for our children using a catalogue of resources that we are compiling appropriate to each age group. In addition, we are developing internal and external learning and development opportunities for our staff. Through these separate but aligned programmes, we will deliver learning, growth and development opportunities plus the necessary wherewithal to take action and create innovative solutions to the economic, social, technological and cultural challenges that threaten to imbalance the earth’s ecosystem.
The adoption of the UNSDGs has culminated in creating four grand themes for the education programme which are described below and depict the UNSDGs that they cover:
With more than 10% of Generation Z likely to live to 100 years and beyond, yet if current projections are correct, for much of those additional years, people will be living with illhealth. To avert this, it’s vital that we support our children, to develop and maintain the necessary skills, knowledge and resilience to achieve success in a future world.
Our programme will cover:
Nutrition, food and food waste
Stress and anxiety management
Neurodiversity
Clean water and sanitation
Labour standards, poverty and economic growth
A net-zero world cannot have wastage and wastes like we have today. Producing what is needed must have a lighter touch on the environment and consuming products needs to be consciously managed to avoid waste and where possible put materials back into a production cycle through closed loop material chains or a circular economy approach.
Responsible consumption and production thus includes topics such as:
Specification and procurement
Energy selection and efficiency
Climate and climate change
Water use, pollution and aquatic life
Land use, pollution and terrestrial life
Recognising we cannot achieve sustainability on our own, it is fundamental that our behaviours are collaborative and that this leads to shared actions, goals and effective outcomes.
Our work on Partnerships includes:
The meaning of partnership and collaboration
Types of partners
Relationship building for equality, peace and justice
Achieving sustainable cities
Innovation
Dukes Foundation is the main way we will deliver on this key theme. Our membership of the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF) will enable our board of trustees to remain at the forefront of excellent practice in how we manage our charitable work.
In 2022, we achieved Planet Mark certification across our colleges. This equates to a total of 801.1 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent emissions or 2.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions per employee, as verified by Planet Mark.
We are developing the metrics we will report in next year’s Annual Report. This will include carbon footprint data that has been verified by Planet Mark as part of the certification process across all our settings in 2023 and progress against our grand themes and plans.
Through PlanetMark, Dukes is protecting an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Our pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.
We are also helping the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.
FUTURE TARGET FOR ALL SCHOOLS:
Reduce carbon footprint by 5% annually
As part of the PlanetMark certification, Dukes Education has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
quality teaching and learning is at the heart of an excellent education.
