here can surely be no better place to explore with your dog, than Cornwall. With endless beaches on which to roam, shady woodlands to wander through and miles of coast path just waiting to be discovered your hound will be in heaven. With that in mind, this month’s cover feature takes us on a tour of some wonderful National Trust places to walk and visit this summer. Turn to page 20 to discover more. Keeping your canine friend happy and healthy is a must, and the experts at Slickers Doghouse know just how to do that. With a large range of quality dog products, accessories and gifts available a visit to either the shop or the website, is a must. We’ve selected some of our favourite pooch products to choose from, from page 26. Continuing with the theme of shopping (and who doesn’t love some retail therapy!) our feature from page 66 has some great treat ideas and gifts. Or why not visit one of Cornwall’s galleries this summer (from page 71), where you’ll find a host of artists and makers creating stunning pieces that will look good in any home. As ever, we have some incredible properties (from page 31) should you be looking to relocate or are searching for your forever home in the Duchy, followed by plenty of interior inspiration for when you find the right one. ...happy reading!

Are you fit t After a life and career that took him around the world, Mike Richards and his wife Jackie are enjoying a stunning new outlook on life in their childhood home of Penzance, after moving to an apartment at Churchill Retirement Living’s Mount’s Bay Lodge. “We were rattling around in a four bedroom house that was far too big for us,” says Mike. “We decided the time was right for us to downsize, and the pandemic didn’t put us off from making the move. My bowling colleague Bob recommended Churchill, and now we’re next-door neighbours! Our new apartment is very warm and cosy, everything is nice and new, and we have a lovely outlook from our balcony across the bay to St Michael’s Mount. We’ve seen some beautiful sunrises.”
Mike and Jackie were both born in Penzance, not far from Mount’s Bay Lodge, but Mike joined the army at the age of 17 for a career that would take them all over the world and back again. The couple enjoyed a socially distanced ‘pasty and prosecco’ welcome party in the Owners’ Lounge when they first moved in. ortunately it was just before the stricter lockdown measures came in at the end of December,” says Mike. “That gave us a chance to meet people and everyone was very welcoming. We’re looking forward to getting to know them all better very soon!” For more information call 01736 664793 or visit www. churchillretirement.co.uk/retirementapartments-for-sale/cornwall/ mounts-bay-lodge/
Dr Stolte, who runs MEDfacials in Truro and sister company Rapid Health Test, explains what the new UK travel regulations will mean for those wishing to travel abroad this year. “The Government has released a green list of countries or territories deemed safe for travel. Travel to these countries, will require a Covid test on or before the second day of your arrival. “It can be confusing and costly, which is why we set up Rapid Health Test; the only government-approved clinic in Cornwall to offer same day C with it to ly Travel Certification, and one of a handful of clinics nationwide also offering tests for travellers returning to the UK. Tests can be done either in our Truro Clinic or from your own home, with results in a matter of hours.” Quote ‘Cornwall Living’ to receive £10 off your PCR testing with Rapid Health Test. A dedicated environmentalist and true polymath, Kurt’s holistic approach to his subject seamlessly blends art and politics, providing a springboard to a varied body of work unconstrained by format or scale.
Open until 16th September, a new exhibition at Penlee House Gallery & Museum in Penzance celebrates the life and work of Dame Laura Knight, one of Britain’s most popular twentieth century artists. The exhibition is called Laura Knight: A Celebration and brings together around 60 paintings produced during her almost 80 year long career. Highlights of the show include drawings that she made as a student at Nottingham School of Art, her early paintings in Yorkshire and Holland and her beautiful Cornish landscapes. They include the pictured painting ‘Sennen Cove’ (circa 1911, reproduced with permission of The Estate of Dame Laura Knight DBA RA 2021). Her captivating portraits of ballet dancers and performers are shown together with some of her most well-known works such as her Second World War commissions. Her record of the Nuremberg Trials – The Dock, Nuremberg – is on display until the end of July. For more information call 01736 363625 or visit www.penleehouse.org.uk

Keeping hot tub repair local and

Lawn, beach
and sea
Summer is here with homemade afternoon tea and Cornish gin on rolling lawns, a stone’s throw from the beach. With spectacular views from rooms, lawns and terraces, at the Bay Hotel you can enjoy drinks, light bites and meals made from the freshest local Cornish produce. Chef Sam, delights in bringing the local catch to your plate. Share his Cornish seafood platter for two, or why not hog a whole plate of smoked mussels, pan fried plaice or half lobster to yourself! Tea is a favourite event of the day; after walking or swimming, nothing is more delicious than a homemade afternoon tea including sandwiches, cakes and Cornish tea, Cornish gin or champagne.
And the new two-seater swing is the perfect place for pre-dinner cocktails while watching the stars. For more information call 01326 280464 or visit www.thebayhotel.co.uk
Bring the inside out with Hot Tub Help is a small, family-run business based in Tuckingmill, headed up by Jon Pennington. Originally from Nottingham, where he ran a large hot tub repair company, Jon relocated ten years ago and is now permanently based in Cornwall. “I like to keep the work local and be reactive,” says Jon. “Many need a hot tub repaired quickly, especially commercial holiday companies. Being local, we are always on-hand and can sometimes even fi on the same day if we are in the area.” During the pandemic, online purchasing grew dramatically meaning large items, like hot tubs, could be shipped from anywhere in the country. This is where using a local engineer can come in handy if anything were to go wrong. For more information call 07774 187187 or visit www.hottubhelp.co.uk

A major attraction for locals and visitors alike, Falmouth Week, with its origins as a local sailing regatta dating back at least as far as 1837, has evolved into not only a major sailing competition but also an opportunity for sailors and landlubbers to enjoy the many daytime and evening events in the picturesque seaside town of Falmouth. There is so much to see and do throughout the week that you’ll need to make sure you leave plenty of time to take it all in. ou’ll find family friendly activities in the heart of the town on The Moor, with everything from a large interactive gaming screen to a 40-foot Victorian carousel, alongside an eclectic market and buzzing atmosphere. You’ll need to head to the harbour to view the various sailing races on the water from Sunday to Saturday. Alternatively, you can view the sailing
from the banks of the River Fal or Pendennis headland, as both equally showcase the spectacular scenery Falmouth has to offer. almouth Week definitely pulls it out the bag when it comes to the evening entertainment. With themed evening events ranging from the famous 80s and 90s night to the RNLI Fun Day, there is a jam-packed, night-time schedule put together by Southwest Bars and Events. Not to mention the marching carnival, firework display, red arrows, craft markets and daytime music and entertainment across the town, there really is something for everyone! Introducing Kurt Jackson’s Sea According to internationally acclaimed artist Kurt Jackson: “Painting the sea could become an obsession, an entire oeuvre in its own right, an endless life absorbing task. And, as this new book (the first dedicated solely to his depictions of the sea) attests, Jackson’s dedication to capturing its constant shape shifting – stillness to thundering force, shallows to mysterious depths – has brought forth paintings that communicate the sea’s ebb and ow, its magic and elusiveness. Kurt Jackson’s Sea captures the beauty of the artist’s constantly evolving relationship with one of nature’s most challenging subjects. 200 colour images complement Jackson’s re ections on his interactions with inspirational coastal landscapes – largely experienced in his native Cornwall, but stretching way beyond the county too. Kurt Jackson’s Sea is published by Lund Humphries and features a foreword by award-winning art writer Julian Spalding, who pinpoints the importance of Jackson’s artistic voice at a time of environmental emergency. made in Cornwall Proud to be a part of the Made in Cornwall scheme, the Heritage Craft Association, the Campaign for Wool, as well as being British Wool Artisans and Plastic Free Champions, The Naked Sheep creates a fabulous range of knitwear, from baby clothes and kids wear, to hats, gloves, scarves and more. Starting small in 2013 by selling products at local craft fairs, owner Allie later had the chance to learn how to spin locally sourced sheep eece on a traditional wheel, and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, The Naked Sheep creates fabulous knitwear products and ships them all around the world. Not only that, in order to cater to vegan customers – and to promote a more environmentally friendly way of working – Allie and Nick are
starting to use natural dyes and will soon be spinning their own plant based fibres, and if their current range is anything to go by, it’s fair to say that these are going to be a huge hit! For more information visit www.etsy.com/shop/thenakedsheep3
Preparing pets for new normal For pets, the lifting of lockdown has brought with it new challenges. Many of us have spent a lot of time at home and our animals will need to adjust to us not being around as much. Kernow Vet Group suggests if your pet has previously been fine when left, try leaving for short periods using a pet cam to assess their response. If you have a new pet that has never been left, introduce short periods of separation, leaving the room for a few seconds while they are settled, gradually
building up the time away. You should always work at a level your pet can comfortably cope with, and using cameras to monitor progress is really helpful. If you are concerned by any aspect of your pet’s behaviour, they suggest contacting a ualified behaviourist. For more information call 01208 872254, visit www.kernowvetgroup.com or www.behaviourvet.info

Although dogs are restricted at the other Cornish National Trust properties and gardens, there are still miles of coastline and countryside to explore. Just a stone’s throw from Cornwall Living HQ, you’ll find the enrose state, where a lovely level path meanders along the side of the Loe Pool. You can either do an out-and-return walk from either Helston or the National Trust car park on Penrose Hill to Loe Bar and back, stopping off at The Stables café for refreshment or, for a longer walk circular walk, you can cross the sandy Loe Bar and return via Degibna woods. In spring, expect carpets of bluebells to light up the woodland oor, e plore the Victorian bath house or simply sit a while to admire what was once a late 18th century deer park backed by Penrose House, home to the Rogers family, who gave the estate to the National Trust in 1974 – the largest single gift to the Trust in Cornwall.

e are all familiar with the National Trust’s houses and parklands but did you know that a large part of Cornwall’s coastline and countryside is owned and managed by the National Trust (nationaltrust.org.uk)? From the rugged cliffs of west Cornwall, where majestic, UNESCO-protected engine houses rise from the rocks, to the more gentle nature of Loe Pool and the Penrose Estate, the National Trust prides itself in being welcoming to all; especially dogs. With that in mind, we would love to share with you some our favourite National Trust places and areas to visit with your hound this summer. There are two stunning gardens that are great for exploring with dogs. Furthest west is Trengwainton, near Penzance. This sheltered garden bursts with trees and shrubs at every turn. Dogs on leads are very welcome and there is plenty to sniff out in the 25-acre garden. Water bowls are available at the tea rooms where you are welcome to sit in the garden and enjoy a cuppa or a light lunch. Head inland towards Helston and you’ll discover Godolphin; an ancient and atmospheric estate at the bottom of Godolphin Hill. Here you can wander happily through the gardens for a days-gone-by feel or for the more adventurous, a walk to the top of the hill on a clear day affords the most amazing 360-degree view. Dogs are very welcome but should be kept on a lead in the garden as well as when exploring the wider countryside due to grazing livestock.

Cornwall’s most southerly peninsula, with its iconic lighthouse and craggy cliffs jutting out into the Atlantic, is a wonderful area to explore with your hound. The South West Coast Path runs along the edge of the peninsula joining up the beaches of Gunwalloe and Poldhu, on to Mullion Cove, past Kynance with its famous rock stacks and tur uoise sea before finally bringing you out at Lizard Point. There are cafés at all these points along the way, so plenty of opportunity for a cream tea or a Cornish ice cream. Whether you choose to walk the whole route or just some of it, keep your eyes peeled for seals and seabirds. You never know, you might be rewarded with a Cornish chough sighting. The birds returned to Cornwall in 2001 after an absence of 30 years and have been here ever since. ead over to the north coast and you’ll find Cornwall wears a different cloak. Mining heritage dominates the landscape, with engine houses rising up from the cliff edge, giving the landscape around Chapel Porth and St Agnes a more rugged feel. Along this Heritage Coast are endless miles of cliff walks, backed by heathland offering a veritable dog’s playground. However, care should always be taken when walking with your pup if the footpath passes close to the cliff edge. Always best to have the lead at the ready to navigate these stretches. The seaside towns of Portreath and Perranporth mark either end of the St Agnes Heritage Coast, with the village of

St Agnes in the middle. All have plenty of spots for refreshment and St Agnes even has its own brewery, The Driftwood Spars. Cross the county and the Roseland peninsula is one of those places where time seems to have stood still. This unspoilt area of Cornwall is excellent walking country. From St Anthony Head there are panoramic views from across the Carrick Roads. The sister castles of St Mawes and Pendennis keep watch over the water, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Helford passage, with the Lizard just beyond. Carne, Towan and Porthcurnick beaches are free from dog restrictions so you can play on the sand with your pooch to your heart’s content. And if you’ve worked up a thirst, Carne has a pop-up horsebox in high season serving drinks and ice-cream while Porth Farm café with its sunny courtyard, just yards from Towan, offers lunch, drinks and sweet treats. Travel up the coast and you’ll reach the Fowey Estuary. This is Daphne Du Maurier country, the setting for many of her books, with Menabilly her own Cornwall home. Nestled in the heart of old owey, you’ll find Readymoney Cove which allows dogs outside of the two peak months of July and August. This sheltered, sandy cove has St Catherine’s Castle on one side and medieval Fowey on the other. From here experienced walkers will enjoy taking the South West Coast Path towards Polridmouth (dog-friendly all year round) and on to Gribbin Head and its daymark with glorious views out across the sea. For an inland wander with your hound, a walk through the semi-natural ancient woodland of Higginsmoor Wood on the National Trust's Lanhydrock estate, from Respryn Bridge will take you along the

DID YOU KNOW? In association with Forthglade (forthglade.com) the National Trust has created a canine code. • Take the lead: please keep your dog on a short lead at all times while visiting the gardens • Scoop that poop: bag it and bin it to keep the places beautiful. • Paws for thought: plant diseases can be present in leaf litter and spread on the bottoms of shoes and paws, so keeping to paths helps prevent this. • Be on the ball: not everyone loves dogs, so keep them close by and don’t allow them to approach other visitors without their consent.

lickers Doghouse on Padstow’s North Quay offers a plethora of eco-friendly and sustainable products to get your canine companions summer-ready. From cooling coats and lifejackets, to slings strollers, shampoos, doggie ice-creams and even private fitting sessions, your pooch will never feel so pampered. What’s more, if you don’t live in Cornwall you can still access this fantastic canine range online and have it delivered direct to your door! Slings Using a sling is a great way to evenly distributes the weight of your dog, making it easier than ever to carry them. Whether you use it for public transport, to keep young pups by your side, or to help older dogs keep up on those long summer walks, a sling can be used all day relieving tension in your neck, back, shoulders and arms. All slings are manufactured in the UK, supporting British businesses.
Waterproof slings These are inspired by Slicker’s original dog slings, but come with added features and a waterproof fabric to keep your dog warm and dry in the rainy weather. After listening to customer requests, the slings now have a handy pocket on the strap for your phone for easy access. They also includes a rain cover for your little one to hide under if they're having 40 winks or just need to take shelter from the rain. An incorporated eyelet strap allows you to secure the cover down, or alternatively keep it loose depending on your pup's needs. Finally, for added security an adjustable clip restraint has been incorporated to keep your dog secure, as well as D-Rings on the inside and the outside of the sling in order to attach accessories such as treat bags. Strollers lickers has spent a long time finding seriously good quality strollers to join their their offering. They chose Innopet for so

many reasons, but ultimately because the quality of these strollers is exceptional. All are corrosion resistant with replaceable parts, making them more sustainable. They come in six different styles to ensure the perfect size and model for all requirements Ice cream This year due to popular demand, Slickers has invested in an ice cream production kitchen developed especially for your beloved fur babies. They use local, freerange Cornish raw goats’ milk which is fantastically healthy for doggies and live Cornish yogurt to promote good gut health. Other nutritional ingredients include banana, honey and organic peanut butter. Shampoos and colognes We love to keep it British and so do the team at Slickers! All their shampoos are manufactured here in the UK and are supermild, made using essential oils that nourish the skin and coats of our best friends leaving them smelling fresh and beautiful for days. Not only that, but they are concentrated so they last much longer and the containers are all recyclable making them much more eco-friendly.
Slickers shields For the last four years Slickers has been repeatedly asked for chew proof leads. However, they didn’t want to compromise the quality of the leads simply because puppies like to chew, so decided to produce lead shields that are non-toxic, safe if your dog does try to chew and allows you to keep the uninhibited comfort and functionality of your chosen lead. Private fittings Everyone at Slickers loves dogs and for this reason all staff are fully trained to provide a personal fitting service, free of charge on all products. After all, you can have the best product but if it doesn’t fit properly it can be very uncomfortable and even dangerous for your pet. So, next time you visit Slickers make sure you bring your dog with you – they will also get a yummy treat or two!

o description of this home would be complete without mentioning its unimpeded views across the ocean and surrounding countryside. These alone make Lower Hendra Cottage a rare find on the north coast, but as you head inside, you uickly realise that they are just one part of what makes this home so special. Inside, you’ll find that this detached five si bedroom home benefits from open plan living spaces, a home o ce with superfast fibre, plus planning permission to further extend the accommodation. The interiors ooze laidback coastal chic – ooded with natural light and capitalising on those aforementioned views. Vaulted ceilings combine with the earthy tones of natural wood to provide a rare sense of spacious warmth, whilst neutral, coastal – almost Scandi – interiors remind you of the contemporary build uality that characterises this home. With other features of note including a woodburner in the sitting room, a newly converted attic, plus a stunning master bedroom with an en-suite shower room and its own private balcony (with spectacular views), ower endra Cottage really is truly a show stopping property. It epitomises the dream home for many with the added opportunity to also work from home whilst living closer to the coast. Lower Hendra Cottage serves as proof that despite the recent surge in property sales there are still some fabulous homes coming to market in this highly coveted corner of the Duchy.

here is no doubt that light, where it comes from and how much of it is let in, comes high on the agenda when planning any home extension. Windows are a given, but did you know that the addition of a skylight can not only increase the light level in a room but can save you money too? We spoke to Stuart at Longrock Windows about an innovative skylight system that is shedding new light on the subject. “We are excited to be able to offer the very latest in skylight technology; the Ultrasky Flat Skylight from Ultraframe is transforming extensions and orangeries around the county. We have chosen the product due to its simple, stylish elegance combined with ease of fit and e cellent thermal properties,” says Stuart. “In fact, the ‘Warm Frame’ technology that the Ultrasky employs, combined with noise reducing glass, means it is unrivalled in both thermal e ciency and noise reduction. The Ultraksy has a sleek modern design with frameless edge-to-edge glass, meaning it is perfect if you are opting for a contemporary look, while letting the maximum amount of light into a room. These skylights fit ush with the internal plasterboard, making them appear frameless from the inside, resulting in a bright open
roof feel. And when it comes to matching your interior, the Ultrasky has that covered too. Available in the standard colours of black, grey or white, you can also add an extra touch of style by customising the colour of your skylight. Ultraskys can be matched to any RAL colour – the European colour matching system which defines colours for paint, coatings and plastics – for a smart, seamless appearance. However, it’s not all about the look. It’s important that any skylight also delivers on a practical level, as Stuart explains: “The Ultrasky’s thermal properties mean they deliver warmth in the winter and are cooling in the summer, minimizing the need for heating and air conditioning.” So, if you want to scatter some sunbeams into your life or sit back and enjoy a sky view like no other, we suggest you get in touch with Longrock Windows today for a whole new window on the world!

THE FUTURE OF
storage
With the announcement that a high-tech storage solution is coming to Cornwall, we had to find out more…
B
ritannia Lanes is a family-run moving and storage company with four locations serving the South West. Sarah Lane, who heads up the o ce management, and recruitment for the business told us: ”No two moves are ever the same. One day we might be moving a standard three-bedroom house and the next we could be doing something more specialist.” Each move is planned, depending on size, location and type, with a surveyor mapping out a bespoke plan for each. “It’s like a big jigsaw,” continues Sarah, “and it’s vital that every piece fits into place. That might mean putting a client’s furniture into storage if there is a time-gap between buying and selling. We have our own, on-site storage facilities which, actually, have never been busier as we are finding that sellers are keen to exchange in the current client even if they don’t have an immediate property to move to.”
With this in mind, Sarah was able to share with us the exciting news that they are shortly to launch a state of the art, contactless, satellite self-storage facility in south Cornwall that will be the first of its kind in the uchy. The idea is that you can just turn up and choose the size of room you require. You will then complete your contract digitally on a machine that will then give you an access code into the facility. The plan is, that this will just be the first of many of these across Cornwall. It’s important for us as a company, and for our customers, that we are agile and move with the times. We’re used to having peaks and troughs as our business obviously follows the, sometimes volatile, housing market. Our satellite storage will help manage this, both in terms of our business and our customers’ needs.”

HOME
Britannia Lanes has recently completed on the purchase of a warehouse just outside Falmouth that will be converted into a selfstorage depot, with plans to create the most high-tech storage option in the South West, and one of the most futuristic in the whole country. The property formerly storage for a marine drilling and geoscience company will undergo a full renovation this year including mezzanine oors, a new roof, re-cladding and changes to the internal walls. Truro based C A Architects have created a concept design for the building, which shows large windows to the front elevation, curved roof panels and the distinctive red, white and blue ritannia colour scheme. The location at ickland Water oad, almouth, is ideal for customers from Falmouth, Penryn, and surrounding areas and a specialist fit out company will be installing 217 self-storage units across three levels. Company Director, Mark Lane explained: “We have been offering self-storage for the past 20 years, but during that period the average time a client is willing to travel has dropped from 30 minutes to less than 15 minutes. With this in mind, we felt the moment was right to expand into the largest town in Cornwall, which will complement our current self storage facilities in Truro, Exeter and Bridgwater. There is no such thing as a typical self storage customer, so our units will be sized from 25sqft to 250sqft and customers will be able to choose a range of access times. Whether people are looking to store a couple of surfboards or large amounts of retail stock, we will be able to help them.”
roject anager, arah awkey was also on-hand to tell us more about the high-tech features: The facility will be completely unmanned, made possible via the use of a bespoke EPOS system (similar to a hotel selfcheck-in machine) that will manage the initial move in, contract and payment process. This software interlinks with a special phone app which allows keyless access to both the main door and your own unit. Our self-store managers in Truro will remotely monitor the Falmouth facility via this system and through the use of remote access CCTV. So, whether you are looking for household, business or personal storage this unique solution could be the perfect solution. The team at anes tell us that they are looking forward to their grand opening later this summer, and to welcoming their first customers very soon. Watch this high-tech space…

THIS FOOD IS ON With summer around the corner, now’s the time to take your barbecue to the next level.

s a nation, we love a good al fresco cook-up; outdoor cooking and dining have been the entertaining saviour during a year of indoor restrictions. Gathering with family and friends in the garden, enjoying a pre-dinner drink and inhaling that wonderful smell of wood smoke as something delicious sizzles on the grill is a heady experience! In celebration of this, we will be stoking up our barbecues next month to join National BBQ Week as it celebrates 25 years of al fresco eating. Reporting that over the Easter period last year, a staggering 11 million barbecues were held across the UK, National BBQ Week will be encouraging people to be better ‘barbecue-ers’ in 2021. And who better to advise on how to level up your outdoor cooking than experts in creative outdoor living, Heart Smoke and Soal. Their range of amazing outdoor living products covers everything from Fire Magic’s luxury grills and outdoor ovens, Alfa’s elegant Italian-designed pizza ovens and British-made modular kitchen units from Vlaze, to stunning fire bowls, fire pits, wood rubs and more. Owner Zowie Brooks tells us: “Rather than just a sausage or a burger, people are trying new recipes with in uences from the likes of social media, chefs and home cooks. With
fire!
lockdown over the past year, people have spent more time at home trying new things and being able to appreciate their home space more. “With that in mind we are delighted to be holding three Open Days over the coming months. Award-winning chefs will be joining us to hold live cooking demonstrations on our equipment, with brand reps available on the day to answer any questions. We feel that being huge foodies ourselves, with a real passion for cooking outside, sets us apart from other outdoor dining companies. We regularly use the brands we stock ourselves in our own outdoor kitchen. The open days will fulfil this side of our passion, with e uipment fired up outside so that guests can smell, taste and really live what we are all about!” We’ll most definitely be putting one of the Open Days in our diary. FLOORING MATTERS For a flawless feeling underfoot with stunning looks to match, M H Flooring is here to help. MAIN Find flooring to match the unique character of your home

f you actually stop and take the time to look at your ooring, it can be surprising how much of an impact it can have on the look and ambiance of your home. It might be that you’ve moved into a new house and the ooring doesn’t match up with your interior design vision, or that you’ve trodden the same threads for years and your carpet is starting to look a little worse for wear. It could even be that your lifestyle needs have changed and you need to upgrade your ooring to suit, such as having children or getting a puppy, in which case an easy clean hard oor would perhaps be preferable to carpet. Whatever it is, ark oneychurch owner of looring, with more than years’ e perience in the ooring trade offers his advice: If you are thinking about changing your ooring, I would recommend looking at all the options available and we can then discuss the product best suited to your needs. or those seeking to add a lu ury touch to their homes, carpet remains the obvious choice after all, nothing beats the feeling of stepping out of bed to the warmth of carpet underfoot. or a lot of homes however, ooring needs to be able to stand up to the Cornish outdoor lifestyle, and historically, hardwood has been the go to choice for a

As ark puts it: iving in Cornwall we’re lucky to be surrounded by sea and countryside. The ideal ooring for a family home in Cornwall would therefore be hard wearing and easy to keep clean I speak from e perience as in our home we spend a lot of time in the garden with family, friends and our dog, so chose Amtico VT ooring as it’s e tremely hard wearing and easy to clean. or Alan Britton, Managing Director of Bude Windows and Conservatories, building has always been in the blood. Back in 1995, searching for new double glazing to their own home, Alan and his wife Lorraine noticed a woeful lack of quality, products and service available in the area. They decided to remedy this by starting their own quality glazing and replacement window business. 25 years on and the business has gone from strength to strength, now boasting its own showroom in Bude. “I put the secret of our success down to never compromising on quality,” says Alan, “whether it be in the materials and products we use or the high standard of workmanship we’ve become known for.” Alan and Lorraine’s son Daniel also joined the business in 2008 after completing a building apprenticeship and ualifications in window fitting. This hands on e pertise means that he is now well placed to advise and quote for work, something he does with a ‘no pressure’ approach. There’s never any obligation or deadline to decide, in line with the company’s ethos of quality, whether that be of product, sales or service. Lorraine heads up the marketing portfolio alongside o ce manager amantha and a team of highly trained, professional glazing and building specialists, hand picked for their ualifications and skills. The company not only offers traditional double glazed windows and doors but also a full range of thermally e cient and eco friendly specialist glazings that are available to be framed in a variety of designer features such as roof lanterns, sky lights and bi folding doors. Aluminium
installations have also become very popular in recent years and are now proving to have more appeal than traditional uPVC products. As a family run business, Alan, orraine and Daniel feel they are very fortunate to be able to live and work in beautiful north Cornwall, and absolutely love helping their clients make the most of their homes here by the sea. If you’re about to embark on a home improvement project and think they could help you, we highly recommend giving them call.

BUILDING TRUST Quality, efficiency and expertise in construction; this is the ethos that underpins the work of Scribe SW.
A
s Cornwall’s popularity continues to grow, particularly in light of the pandemic which has left many seeking more space and a chance to escape to the slowed down pace of life by the sea, many are choosing to purchase second homes here in the Duchy. And as more of us seek to make the most of our time within the confines of our homes be that inside or out ensuring those spaces live up to our lifestyle needs is now more important than ever. This is where Scribe SW excel. It could be that you're bulding a home from the ground up, or are undertaking a full renovation, in which case Scribe SW brings a personalised approach to each and every job, focusing on quality and craftsmanship to ensure the finished result lives precisely up to your vision. Alternatively, it might be that you’re hoping to make the most of your outside space. If so, Scribe’s bespoke garden buildings can really make good use of it, and with experience building summer houses, log cabins, and even outside bars in fabulous settings, the team understands how much difference a garden building can make to your home. Buildings like these can make a great hub for garden-get-togethers, or a relaxing retreat for some rest and recuperation after a busy week.
Whatever your project looks like, when you enlist the expertise of Scribe, you can rest assured that everything the team does, is done with sustainability in mind. With many companies offering similar services to Scribe, consumers are often kept in the dark as to the sustainability (or lack thereof) of the materials used on their project. “At Scribe,” says business owner, Michael, “we don’t think that this is an excuse to make ill advised, irresponsible and careless decisions, especially when the opportunity e ists to make a significant positive impact to our environment, both globally and locally.” In short, the Scribe team bring quality, e ciency, reliability, e perience and innovation to each and every project they are a part of. Whether it’s a garden building, a renovation, or a brand-new property, for anybody contemplating buying, building, or renovating a home here in Cornwall, Michael and the Scribe SW team come highly recommended.

his magical, musical fable will be performed across the sub-tropical ravine valley garden and tells the tale of Tevi, a uniquely special lion cub. In a heart-warming, coming-of-age story he discovers what it is to be the leader of a pride – a reminder to adults and children alike that our uniqueness should be our strength; after all, there are many ways to be a lion. Trebah Garden has teamed up with Cousin Jack’s – the Cornish family theatre company behind the annual production of The Mousehole Cat performed live in Mousehole every Christmas – for this family promenade storytelling event that takes you on a magical journey, culminating in a celebration of individualism on Trebah’s private beach. Expect beautiful puppetry, live music, and captivating storytelling. This is a unique opportunity for spirits to be lifted and humanity celebrated in a much-missed shared experience! Directed by Guy Watson, founder and Artistic Director of Cousin Jack’s, who produced and directed Operation Neptune for Trebah in 2019, Dandy Lion will feature Emily Faulkner and Oliver Longstaff, familiar faces to the garden from previous performances. New to Trebah this year are Little Angel Theatre trained puppeteers
Stacey Mitchell and Jennie Rawling. The score has been written by Cornish composer and musician Ben Sutcliff and will be performed live by Zaid Al-Rikabi. The story has been developed from an original idea by Guy Watson and has been written by Charlotte O’leary writer of Operation Neptune, and will be produced by Jonathan Bray and Guy Watson on behalf of the Trebah Garden Trust. Dandy Lion is suitable for families of all ages; however, it’s worth noting that due to the topography of the garden children and adults will be required to walk as the route is not suitable for buggies. This is just one of the many exciting events planned at Trebah this summer. From live piano concerts on the beach and performances in Trebah’s own open-air amphitheatre, to pop-up family adventures and comedy evenings, there is a performance for everyone this summer at Trebah Garden. Ever-popular, these shows sell out quickly so we recommend early booking – see you there!

Sip on a taste of Cornwall this summer, with Cornish Rock Gin’s delicious range of gins and rums.

he distillery and shop at Cornish Rock Gin are both all geared up for summer with a line-up of eight incredible gins and six very special rums to choose from. The magic that is Cornish Rock Gin, began in Cornwall when owners Angie and George were out walking their dog Blue on Rock Beach. Once the idea was born they decided to distil gin in small batches using natural Cornish spring water and original and unique botanicals at their distillery in the beautiful, wooded Allen Valley. The first ock in was a classic original, wonderfully smooth with a lingering liquorice aftertaste. This was swiftly followed by Pink Rock, a very dry gin enhanced by pink fermented champagne grapes – a unique combination leaving a champagne tingle in the mouth. Next in the line-up came Cornish Gold, again an exceptionally smooth gin with a peppery avour, pairing well with ginger ale but also enjoyable when sipped neat. A colourful trio then followed; Rock Blue Angel Gin, a fabulous gin, rich blue in colour with a smooth gentle taste; Rock Orange Sunset, with a light orange marmalade taste; followed by Rock Cherry Kiss, full-bodied with a delicate hint of cherries. Not a gin fan? Then why not sample a Cornish Spiced Rum with cinnamon, vanilla, orange peel, allspice and cubeb
pepper, resulting in a spicy, peppery taste or Cornish Red Rum, lightly spiced and enriched with plump red cherries. For something a little special, Cornish White Espresso Rum uses coffee own direct from Angie and eorge’s nephew's farm in Kenya where they support and buy from locals, just as they do with their locally sourced ingredients here in Cornwall. This year sees the release of three new rums. PAWS
for thought
Outset Cornwall has been helping start-up canine businesses across Cornwall realise their potential.
I
t’s true; we are a nation of dog lovers. According to the PDSA’s most recent Animal Welfare report in 2020 (or The PAW Report as it’s more commonly known in such circles), 26% of UK adults now own a dog, with around 3.2 million households acquiring their pet since the start of the COVID pandemic. Accompanying such a love for our canine companions comes the necessity of looking after them responsibly, resulting in an industry that’s now worth over £7.9million and counting, according to the latest figures released by the ce of National Statistics in 2020. Outset Cornwall has seen a number of dog-friendly start-ups come through its doors since launching in 2009, with ideas ranging from home-made nutritious dog treats to doggy day care, and everything in-between. Jo Wolforth, founder of New uay based Wolfies
Walkies, is one of those businesses. Realising she could no longer physically continue in her role as a postal worker gave Jo the push she needed to combine her love of dogs with her dream of running her own business. After hearing a radio advert, Jo decided to approach Outset Cornwall for help in setting up a dog walking and dog sitting service in her local area, and Wolfies Walkies was born. utset gave me the confidence I needed to stop procrastinating and just get started,” says Jo. “It’s been a real journey so far, and it has been stressful, as there’s so much to take in and think about. But now that it’s all coming together, it’s really exciting.” Offering a relatively contact-free service, using her own dog leads plus putting trackers on her charges when she walks them for peace of mind, Jo is now starting to build her customer base and finding it much easier to

meet clients as more restrictions are lifted. “Although the pandemic did impact my business initially, now I have lots of enquiries coming through,” says Jo. “I’m working on collaborations with local surf schools to look after their surfers’ dogs while they’re surfing and as soon as I’ve had permissions granted, I can start offering a doggy day-care service at my home. My long-term plan is to open my own dog sanctuary, taking in strays and unwanted dogs, and providing a free service for terminally ill patients to give their pet a home when they’re no longer able to.” Another Outset client developing and launching a dog-friendly business is Desney Ryan, who plans to open Southpaw Dog Store, a quirky dog boutique in Falmouth’s high street, offering good quality accessories and products for dogs, as well as a range of dogthemed human products, carefully sourced from independent local and UK-based brands. y journey started five years ago, when I adopted my Tibetan Terrier Otis from a puppy farm,” says Desney. “He had behavioural issues, so I started studying canine behaviour and psychology to help him and learn more myself. I’d visited Cornwall regularly, and I loved being by the sea, so I decided to make the move during lockdown, in February this year.” After finding the shop and making enquiries, Desney was signposted to Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Growth Hub, who recommended she contact Outset Cornwall for help and advice in getting started. “It’s
an incredibly scary thing to do, and I was nervous about my abilities, but the support from Outset has been invaluable,” says Desney. “I’ve made some fantastic friends through the sessions and been given great advice by the team, even helping me apply for a government-backed Startup Loan. Now, my dream is becoming a reality, and the shop is on track to open this month.” With plans for eye-catching, creative window displays, a website and blog featuring a ‘doggy directory’ and tips on behaviour, nutrition and local walks, plus becoming involved with the local community through beach cleans and other events, Desney hopes Southpaw Dog Store will be more than just a shop. “My best piece of advice would be just do it; you have nothing to lose! Be clear about your idea, and use the Outset team’s knowledge and practical advice to hone and develop it while you have the opportunity. I’m so glad I did.”

THE POWER
of Nature Planting the seed of happiness during Mental Health Awareness Week.
T
he theme for Mental Health Awareness week this year was nature. “There is evidence for the powerful benefit of nature on our mental health through its unique ability to bring consolation in times of stress,” says Emma from Bluebird Care, “and also a corresponding increase in our creativity, empathy and sense of wonder. It is not just being in nature but how we open ourselves up and interact with nature that counts.” As Mark Rowland, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation explains: “Nature is so central to our psychological and emotional health, that it’s almost impossible to realise good mental health for all without a greater connection to the natural world. For most of human history, we lived as part of nature. It is only in the last five generations that so many of us have lived and worked in a context that is largely separated from nature. And it is only since a 1960s study in the US found that patients who were treated in hospitals with a view of nature recovered faster, that science has started to unpack the e traordinary health benefits. Care providers in Cornwall, Bluebird Care, wanted to explore this idea further and to e tend these benefits to both their teams and customers. By sending packets of seeds for
everyone to plant together, they were able to help to sooth any stress and refocus the mind on something positive. rom owers to bring a ash of joyful colour to the garden, to tasty, easy-to-grow salad leaves, the simple art of planting and growing together enabled time to talk and express feelings as well as spending time out in the sun – which is always a bonus! Bluebird Care are passionate about mental health awareness, and understand the positive impact that nature definitely has. Their teams and customers have not only been busy planting 'pots of joy' to make them smile whilst enjoying the spring sunshine, they have also been getting out and about on beautiful walks, taking in all that nature has to offer with stunning Cornish views and fields of bluebells. Time spent outdoors can’t help but make us feel that bit more positive.

This was our
COVID YEAR More than a thousand lives were touched by Cornwall Hospice Care during the Covid-19 pandemic.

s Covid-19 forced the country in to successive lock downs, Cornwall’s adult hospices remained open and admitting patients 24/7. Despite the pressures caused by the pandemic, the Cornish healthcare charity admitted 404 patients at its two hospices, Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell and St Julia’s in Hayle. The majority were referred, by medical professionals, from their own home or from Cornwall’s acute hospital, with around 40% able to return to their home or care home after receiving palliative care. The charity was also able to offer support of a different kind, with the advice line, run by Cornwall Hospice Care in support of other healthcare professionals, receiving and dealing with a staggering 1,479 calls. Help was also offered in the form of patient and family support services such as bereavement counselling in the financial year this included 1,867 appointments during which 1,312 hours of support was given. We spoke to Gina Starnes, Cornwall Hospice Care’s Director of Clinical Services; “The last year has been an extremely tough one for all health care providers and I salute our charity’s front-line staff who’ve continued to care for our terminally ill patients during the pandemic. The doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, chefs, housekeepers, maintenance team and administrators have shown extraordinary commitment and as a result we’ve continued to be there for those who need us most. “I’d also like to pay tribute to our community services team who’ve adapted to new ways of working. Our Listening Ear service set up to support bereaved people, those needing mental and physical help or facing isolation and financial worries during the pandemic, received 222 calls, with some lasting up to an hour. Our virtual Friendship Café now has 102 members and more than 400 delegates have attended online seminars that the team have hosted. I’m humbled by this dedication in the face of such adversity.” The pandemic also massively impacted the charity’s Neighbourhood Hubs project that offers advice and support to people in
their local community. Consultations had to move from venues where people could be seen face-to-face to telephone calls, but still 161 patients and 24 carers were supported with relevant treatments being provided by Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists. For more information on how you can support the continuing work of this essential service in Cornwall visit the Cornwall Hospice Care website.

DID YOU KNOW? Cornwall Hospice Care also supported people with Lymphoedema providing 748 hours of care to patients in 732 face to face appointments and 400 telephone appointments (a service introduced because of the pandemic).
