PROUD TO BE PART OF
to the Special Penwith Edition of Cornwall Living
S
tretching from St Ives to mainland Britain’s most south-westerly point at Land’s End, Penwith feels wild and untouched. A far cry even from the rest of Cornwall, colourful hectares of countryside undulate their natural way between charming hamlets and villages, the dramatic rising and falling of the landscape giving credence to tall tales of quarrelsome giants. Strewn with the iconic remains of the Cornish mining industry, the landscape here is also home to an abundance of wildlife, and as you might expect with the ocean on three sides, the history of the peninsula is intricately intertwined with that of the maritime world, which you need only visit Penzance for the day to see (page 17). Restaurant menus abound with local produce and locally landed seafood (25, 40); galleries are lined with the works of artists from around the world who have been drawn here by the sea and the incredible quality of light it affords (30); even its gardens are shaped by their proximity to the ocean, which you can read all about from page 22. If you’re looking for a day trip with a difference, on page 26 we find out why the Isles of Scilly should be on your itinerary, and for those who’re keen to keep their feet firmly on terra firma, on page 39 we visit Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life, where extensive social history collections give a fascinating insight into the Cornish days of yore. Whatever your idea of the perfect holiday and for however long you’re here, we hope our dedicated guide to Penwith will help you make the absolute most of your time in Cornwall’s ‘wild west’. Happy reading!

Dance has long been recognised as therapeutic, which is why Khalid Beg – instructor at St Ives’ Institute of Endrian Yoga – believes firmly in the benefits of yoga dance. Endrian, which derives from a Sanskrit word meaning ‘all the senses, anything you can experience’ and ‘energy in the organs’, is the name given to this particular yoga discipline, which Khalid teaches in order to help rekindle youthful movement. Being a master healer and qualified Kinesiologist, Khalid’s understanding of muscle and movement puts him in prime position to help you
improve your balance and co-ordination, but not just that. Endrian yoga will also encourage you to exist in the moment and to focus, giving you a raised level of mindfulness that will stay with you long after the class has finished. So if you could use a boost – be it mental or physical – why not try Endrian yoga for yourself? For more information call 01736 757919 or 07979 606851

Mount’s Bay Vets – caring for your pets, day and night Ten years ago, two Cornish vets realized their ambition to offer an outstanding personal service to the pet owners of Penwith, and opened the doors of Mounts Bay Vets in Longrock. This year, Luke and Anna are celebrating a decade of working in partnership with owners to keep their pets healthy. The team has, of course, expanded over the years, with nurses and receptionists as familiar to the pets as the vets themselves; the reception team aim to make every visit as enjoyable as possible for all, even if it’s just a drop-in for a weight check.

WALKING
We explore the breathtaking landmarks on the South West Coast Path surrounding the Penwith peninsula. é ABOVE

F
rom white sand beaches with crystal clear waters to some of Cornwall’s most impressive mining remains, myths of mermaids, an island castle and an outdoor theatre chiselled into the cliffs – there’s so much to see on Cornwall’s Penwith peninsula. And one of the best ways to experience it all is on foot. So, with that being said, here are some of the top walks we can recommend around Cornwall’s wild and beautiful Penwith coast. Porthcurno, Porthgwarra and Gwennap Head A circular walk from Porthcurno, passing the Minack Theatre, St Levan’s Holy Well, Porthchapel and Porthgwarra beaches, to Gwennap Head where the English Channel meets the Atlantic; you can also see Runnel Stone reef, a frequented shipwreck site for divers. The crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches in this area are sure to mesmerise you, as is the striking setting of the Minack Theatre. Land’s End A circular walk on the rugged cliffs at mainland Britain’s most westerly point with spectacular views and beautiful wild owers. There’s a tangible sense of Cornwall’s wildness here and you really do feel like you are on the edge of the earth.
Botallack Head A circular walk around Cornwall’s most iconic mining remains, used for the filming of the BBC’s Poldark series. This is a rugged and beautiful area to explore, steeped in Cornish history. Zennor to Gurnard’s Head A circular walk from Zennor along the coast via the sea-smoothed granite boulders at Porthmeor Cove to the site of an Iron Age fort on Gurnard’s Head, returning from the Gurnard’s Head pub on the ancient church way to Zennor. If you stop off at Zennor church you will be able to see the famous carving of the mermaid of Zennor that has inspired numerous children’s books, including Ingo by Helen Dunmore, and The Mermaid of Zennor picture book by Charles Causley and Michael Foreman.

St Michael’s Way St Michael’s way is a 12.5-mile walking route between Lelant and Marazion. Due to its historical significance, St Michael’s Way is the only footpath in Britain that is part of the designated European Cultural Route. The route dates back to pre-historic times and is thought to have been used by pilgrims and missionaries who arrived from Ireland or Wales and chose to abandon their ships and walk across the peninsula. You're sure to work up an appetite along the way, so why not head to the White Hart in Ludgvan? Turn to page 40 to find out more.

Having a guiding hand like Susy Ward, herself a thrower, ensures you have a good experience whether you are focused solely on learning to throw or want to spend a few hours a week in a creative atmosphere on the wheel, hand building or slip casting. The workshops also cover surface decoration in all its forms including printing. Buy a discounted 20 hour block or pay per session. The 20 hours can be taken all in one week or spread over a number of weeks. Times and days can be changed to fit in with you. I also have taster session vouchers which make an excellent present.

SAGE ADVICE Trevena Cross garden centre offer their top tips to the budding coastal gardener.
W
est Penwith, or the ‘wild west’, and its people, are accustomed to coping with seriously challenging weather conditions. It is crucial to living in and enjoying such a beautiful place, nowhere more so than in the garden. Creating a sustainable coastal landscape requires enthusiasm, a peek over the fence to see what your neighbours are growing, and a little advice from some plant-savvy folk. This is where Trevena Cross comes in. Located a mile from the sea in west Penwith, Trevena Cross has been successfully growing plants adapted for this very landscape, across 35 acres, for more than four decades in its nursery and garden centre. Trevena Cross owner, Graham Jeffery, shares a few words of wisdom to help inspire ‘wannabe’ coastal gardeners. “A coastal garden with a decent windbreak is crucial to the success of everything else growing there, helping to create the garden’s very own microclimate. We recommend the toughest of hedging for west Penwith, like Elaeagnus ebbingei Compacta or Olearia traversii. Griselinia littoralis is also perfect for a position set a bit further back from the sea.” He also advises being aware of wind rock: “Wind rock is destabilisation of a plant’s roots by strong winds, and can be avoided by
keeping the plant lower to the ground during the autumn and winter months. Autumn is a great time to plant for establishment beneath the ground, however, we advise top growth be kept down, and plants be pruned right back where vulnerable. It may seem drastic in the short term but it could save your plant in the long term.” Poor, free draining soils, and salt-laden winds are typical of coastal locations, so choosing plants that tolerate such conditions is key. Graham recommends a good quality, slow-release fertiliser (like Trevena Cross Fertiliser) that will feed your plants for a complete season. He concludes: “Warmer coastal temperatures mean you can take advantage of a huge range of plants. Why not introduce seasonal patio plants? Many of which do exceptionally well by the coast, and last many months. You can’t beat succulents, foliage and subtropical plants for wonderful contrast and texture too”. If you’d like to see your coastal garden ourish, why not pop by and visit Trevena Cross and ask the green fingered experts for more of their top tips?

WELCOME
to Penzance
Known across the world as the home of myth, piracy and adventure, throughout history, Penzance has nurtured daring risk-takers, creative thinkers and independent minds alike.

T
oday, Penzance’s natural beauty, impressive architecture, vibrant community and independent shops and restaurants continue to captivate and inspire people to visit this bustling market town. If you’re visiting Penzance, be sure to tick off these top ten attractions. Firstly, Penzance’s celebrated Art Deco lido on the promenade is well worth a visit. Opening in the spring, the pool is set to have a new geothermal pool heated via ‘hot rock’ technology, making it the UK’s only saltwater geothermal pool. Whilst you’re here, Penzance promenade (the only prom in Cornwall) has recently been refurbished, with lots of new designs etched into the surface, referencing its history over the centuries and serving as a lasting legacy of the town’s past, present and future. Seen jutting out of Mount’s Bay, a trip here wouldn’t be complete without a jaunt across the causeway to St Michael’s Mount, so whether it’s a family holiday highlight or part of a group tour, be sure to include it! The mount is also home to some delightful gardens, as is the wider Penzance area. Explore the large-scale sculpture gardens of Tremenheere, before discovering the Grade II listed architecture, Victorian bandstand and haven of Mediterranean plants that make up Morrab Gardens. Visit the National Trust owned Trengwainton, with its extensive
walled gardens and woodland walks (all of which are dog friendly), before immersing yourselves in the 15-acre paradise of Trewidden – home to over 300 Camellias and Magnolias. Penzance has also become something of a creative hub, perfect for culture vultures! Penlee Museum, Theatre and Gardens houses a permanent collection of Newlyn School Paintings, and puts on a programme of changing exhibitions celebrating local arts and crafts. Penlee Open Air Theatre, meanwhile, offers a unique outdoor theatre space that has celebrated Cornish, national and international performers since 1948. Then there’s Penzance Exchange and Newlyn Art Gallery. For more than 120 years, Newlyn Art Gallery has been bringing the best in contemporary art to audiences in the south west. Now, along with The Exchange, it offers a wide and varied exhibition programme across two sites, presenting contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists. Known as the ‘gateway to the west’ and with all of the above and more to offer, if you’re visiting the Penwith peninsula, a trip to Penzance is surely a must on your holiday itinerary.
DID YOU KNOW? Penzance is also home to a wealth of historic architecture, including the iconic Egyptian House on Chapel Street – one of Cornwall’s most flamboyantly designed buildings.

ith its position at the western end of Mount’s Bay, Penzance has had a strong relationship with the sea throughout its history and continues to do so today. Parts of Mount’s Bay are designated conservation areas and there are numerous farms nearby, particularly on the Penwith peninsula. As well as having a rich seafaring past, Penzance is also at the heart of a thriving arts scene with a huge collection of galleries, craft shops, workshops and studios, and is home to some highly acclaimed artists. It’s therefore unsurprising that Penzance has a brilliant market calendar, full of arts, crafts and local produce from the surrounding area. Penzance Charter Market takes place on the last Saturday of the month and is held at 9 Marketplace, Penzance, from 9.30am until 1.30pm, with lots of lovely local produce on offer for your day-to-day groceries, crafts and gifts. Penzance Farmers Market is also held at 9 Marketplace and takes place every Friday; here you will find quality local produce including artisan breads, jams, cheese and pastries – to name a few! This year, to celebrate Penzance as one of the most vibrant and innovative artistic towns in the country, the town is hosting the Penzance Festival of Art from 6th to 21st June. Gathering up to 1,000 local artists and creative organisations to stage exhibitions, workshops, pop-up galleries, talks and lectures, the festival will provide a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the art and beauty of this historic coastal town. Then there’s Golowan Festival (golowanfestival. org), otherwise known as Mazey Day, taking place on 28th and 29th June. This celebration of midsummer features parades, markets, music, fairs and mayhem in a colourful festival enjoyed by all generations. From small beginnings, the Penzance Literary Festival (pzlitfest.co.uk) has grown into one of the most popular events in the Cornish calendar. Taking place from 1st to 4th July this year, the festival brings visitors to the town from both the local area and from across the UK to celebrate exceptional literature in beautiful coastal surroundings.

F
ood in Cornwall has become something of a hot topic in recent years, and it’s no wonder. Surrounded by the sea on all but one side and with local farms growing the finest Cornish produce, Penwith is something of a microcosm of the entire county – an out and out foodie destination that continues to thrive.
MAIN A passion for locally caught seafood shines through the menu at the Tolcarne Inn
Tolcarne Inn, Newlyn ne of the first chefs in Cornwall to hold a Michelin Star, Ben Tunnicliffe is something of a pioneer of the Cornish restaurant scene. Passionate about local produce, particularly seafood, his enthusiasm can be seen throughout his menus at Newlyn’s Tolcarne Inn. With one of the K’s most important fishing ports literally on the pub doorstep, where more than 50 species are landed, with the help of Head Chef Matt Smith, Ben is able to deliver show-stopping seasonal menus, from ‘small plates’ in the summer, to roasts by the fire in the winter. If a proper, nononsense avour of the Cornish coast is what you’re after, look no further than the Tolcarne Inn, Newlyn.

RIDING THE
waves as one The artist co-operative Art Space Gallery in St Ives is celebrating its 20th anniversary – two decades of successfully taking control of their own sales.
M
anaged by seven Cornwall based artists, Art Space Gallery is located on the stunning Wharf of St Ives’ iconic harbour. Over the last two decades, a succession of 26 artists have called this sophisticated gallery their own – riding the waves when other galleries have had to close, sharing the costs and responsibilities democratically, working as a team to create a unique gallery showing a diverse array of work. St Ives has, for centuries, been a hub for artists and for art galleries selling their work. The members of the Art Space Gallery have successfully ‘gone it alone’ to consistently sell work directly to the public, art enthusiasts and collectors from all over the world. Over the years, the artists have carved out a welldeserved place in the art establishment, building a reputation for work of exceptional quality. The artists currently in residence include Julian Rowe, who creates his compositions in oils; Helen Atkins, whose paintings are all about the sea and capture the contrast of the seasons; and Sara Pound, a traditional painter of seascapes, landscapes, boats and owers using ink, watercolour and pastel. Lucy Middleton is a lover of all things coastal and is constantly experimenting with her light and airy response to St Ives, while Tracey Oldham’s work – featuring clear lines and bold colour – stands out as graphical and stylish, at the same time achieving a glossy, luxurious surface and cutting straight to the essential feel of summertime. Mary Kaun English, who has long been inspired by the rugged north coast, reveres its strength and beauty, which she captures via organic pit-fired ceramics. Lesley innes, who has been associated with the gallery for many years, describes the gallery’s “virtually ‘tailor-made’” set-up as one that “many can only dream of”. “We are all very enthusiastic about entering into our third decade of business with strength and confidence, Leslie continues, and believe it is our dexterity and sense of unity which keeps our spirits alive.”

he row of buildings that house the school are steeped in history. You may already know of the Porthmeor Studios as a creative sanctuary for the colony of artists drawn to the shimmering light of St Ives over the past century, and that previous tenants here have included Patrick Heron, Ben Nicholson and Sir Francis Bacon. What you may not know is that, nestled above the studios and the salty cellars, where fishermen still mend their nets, sits a friendly community that has given both locals and visitors from across the country a space in which to learn and create for the past 80 years. With a team of professional tutors and a view that has inspired generations, St Ives School of Painting is a welcoming hub of inspiration for anyone looking to awaken their creativity – the perfect escape from everyday life, allowing you to focus on nothing but the art of making. The school offers a wealth of possibilities, with over a hundred short courses throughout the year with inspiring titles such as ‘Ocean and Abstraction’, ‘Discover Painting’, ‘Expressive Watercolour’ and ‘Contemporary Landscape’. All the materials are provided too, so you needn’t bring anything with you. Beginners are always welcome and with small class sizes, there’s plenty of one-to-one
time with your tutor, meaning you can progress at your own pace. “I was a total beginner,” recalls student Jose Mejia. “I was literally afraid of oil painting. The tutor opened the door to set free my imagination and produce works I never dreamed possible.” Jo Baker, a student on the ‘Where Sea Meets Land’ course agrees, explaining: “As a newcomer to oil painting I’ve learned a lot. The teaching is excellent and my tutor has been very patient and informative. And, of course, St Ives is an incredibly inspirational place to work and learn.” Over the summer months, half-day workshops give you a taster version of the two-to-five day courses and are a relaxing way to experiment with different media and have fun. As participant Helen Rutherford puts it: “If you’re looking for a workshop that will develop your confidence, skills and knowledge with warmth and good humour, then look no further.” To tap into your creative side and take part in one of the school’s workshops or classes, be sure to give the team a call!

H
oused within a massive exindustrial building in the centre of the thriving former mining town of St Just-in-Penwith, the Jackson Foundation was set up by leading contemporary artist Kurt Jackson and his wife Caroline and hosts contemporary exhibitions, events and fundraisers, in partnership with a variety of environmental and non-profit organisations. This exciting and versatile, world-class art gallery is free to the public, bridging the gap between public and private art centres, and is the ideal venue to view a varied eclectic range of artistic expression spanning painting, poetry, sculpture, installation and film. Run by husband and wife Fynn and Zinzi Tucker, this environmentally focused art space is green-built, sustainably managed and carbon-positive. Powered by an array of high efficiency solar panels and ground-
source heat pumps, the Foundation goes further by delivering paintings within Cornwall by one of its two zero emission, fully-electric cars. Providing local employment, raising awareness and funds for groups working to protect the environment, and giving back to a community that has been home to the Jackson family for nearly thirty years, this art space works to become a positive force for change. The Jackson Foundation aims to provide a space, open to one and all, to re ect on our symbolic relationship with the natural world, and the rewards to be found by taking a step back and looking around; to see the world through an artist’s eyes.

I
f you’re staying on Penwith, you’re well set to discover the best that Cornwall has to offer. Indeed, just a short scoot up the coast, in the market town of Helston, you’ll find the Museum of Cornish Life, offering a fascinating insight into the area’s rich tapestry of history and heritage. The building was originally designed as the town’s market house in 1837, with two separate buildings – one for butter and eggs, the other for the meat market. Today, it retains the original sloping oor, which adds to the authenticity of experience as you wander back in time to the Cornish days of yore. In front of the museum is a cannon, salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson, which foundered off Loe Bar in 1807. Around 100 sailors’ lives were lost in the disaster, inspiring Henry Trengrouse to invent the ‘Rocket’ lifesaving apparatus, which can be found inside the museum. Head inside and you’ll immediately find that the museum contains a vast social history collection. Dating from the 18th to the 20th century, the range of objects covers agriculture, local trades and industries, as well as law and order, town history, home life, toys, sporting equipment, gardening,
transport and health and leisure activities. Indeed, the sporting display features the famous Bob Fitzsimmons who, heralding from Helston, made boxing history as the sport’s first three-division world champion. The Victorian Classroom, meanwhile, provides a fascinating (and, indeed, eye opening!) insight for children, to see what life was like for pupils all those years ago. The museum boasts the best costume collections of the south west, also offering a regular programme of temporary exhibitions, meaning that there’s usually something new to be found every time you visit. With a team that firmly believes in learning as a life-long process, if you’re staying on the Penwith peninsula and hoping to brush up on your Cornish history, a trip to Helston’s Museum of Cornish Life, only a short drive away, comes highly recommended.

THE HEART OF
l l a w n r o C
The White Hart is a beautiful, traditional Cornish pub nestled on the wild west coast.
DID YOU KNOW? The pub is situated next to the picturesque Ludgvan church and can offer catering in a beautiful setting for weddings and wakes.
L
ocated in the small sleepy village of Ludgvan, deep within the heart of west Cornwall, the White Hart is one of the oldest pubs in the Duchy. Built from traditional Cornish stone, the exterior calls to mind scenes from a local village way back when. Immediately welcoming and dog friendly, as soon as you walk through the door it becomes clear that the friendly and attentive staff like to deliver a laid back and relaxed atmosphere. The pub has an inviting beer garden often frequented by local squirrel ‘Peanut’, who likes a bit of company! The garden is perfect for relaxing in the sun with a cool glass of your favourite tipple while your kids occupy themselves in the new play area, which will be ready for the summer. Serving locally sourced ales and produce, when you visit the White Hart you can expect to experience a taste of Cornwall. Not to mention that from early summer, the pub will be offering regular barbeque evenings and occasional hog roast nights in the beer garden so you can make the most of balmy evenings. A favourite dish on the menu is the homemade steak and ale pie served with mash or chips, plenty of local veg, and of course gravy. The chef works with local farms to source the best meats to keep you steak lovers happy, or if you prefer a taste of the coast, the creamy fish pie with haddock, salmon and prawns is packed full of avour. Alternatively, for veggies and vegans, the vegetable tagine with spices, mixed vegetables, prunes and
honey provides a well-rounded balance of avours in a wonderfully exotic dish. ë ABOVE Ludgvan is steeped in farming tradition; Serving top quality surrounded by wooded valleys and fields, it rump steak provides a pocket of rural bliss and yet is only é INSET a 10-minute drive from the bustling south The White Hart is coastal town of Penzance, and only 20 from immediately the north coast, including St Ives with its welcoming white sandy beaches. This makes the White Hart the ideal pit-stop on your explorations, especially if you happen to be walking along St Michael’s Way, a waymarked long-distance footpath in Cornwall (as seen on page 12). It runs for 12.5 miles from Lelant on Cornwall’s north coast to St Michael’s Mount on the south. By the time you reach the White Hart you will almost certainly need some refreshment and thankfully, the team is there to welcome walkers with a cream tea or a pint of the guest real ale of the week. Don’t take our word for it though, make sure to visit The White Hart to experience the exceptional food and the traditional, chilled atmosphere for yourself.

s Cornwall Hospice Care celebrates 40 years of providing specialist care for families in Cornwall facing terminal illnesses, its services are expanding. The two hospices, including St Julia’s in Hayle, are still at the heart of the charity’s operations, but now help is being offered closer to where people live, including west Cornwall. The Community Services are free of charge and are available to patients (and their carers) living with palliative, terminal and advanced progressive conditions. The community teams aim to provide comfort, information, advice, support and treatments to help people stay active and as well as possible. Patients and carers are welcomed and given time to talk, in confidence, with expert staff and highly trained volunteers. In west Cornwall the charity runs two Neighbourhood Hubs. These are available in Penzance at Clarence House every Thursday from 1.30pm to 4.30pm and in Hayle at St Julia’s Hospice on Mondays, from 10am to 1pm. Clare Bray is Cornwall Hospice Care’s Community Engagement fficer. At our eighbourhood Hubs, she tells us, patients and carers can be seen by a member of
our therapy team to address physical, emotional and practical difficulties. You can either drop in or self-refer to make an appointment. Our key therapists include a Physiotherapist to help you maintain your physical independence, Occupational Therapists to help you identify, understand and adapt to changes in everyday life, and Complementary Therapists who provide physical comfort and relief from symptoms.” Cornwall Hospice Care also offers Wellbeing Workshops and bereavement support groups, so make sure to visit the website to find out more, or you can give the team a call on 1 9 . As Clare says We can have a chat with you and decide which service suits you, your carer and your family best.” For more information and to make contact with the Community Services team visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk/our-care/ community-services/
