ith its position at the western end of Mount’s Bay, Penzance has had a strong relationship with the sea throughout its history and continues to do so today. Parts of Mount’s Bay are designated conservation areas and there are numerous farms nearby, particularly on the Penwith peninsula. As well as having a rich seafaring past, Penzance is also at the heart of a thriving arts scene with a huge collection of galleries, craft shops, workshops and studios, and is home to some highly acclaimed artists. It’s therefore unsurprising that Penzance has a brilliant market calendar, full of arts, crafts and local produce from the surrounding area. Penzance Charter Market takes place on the last Saturday of the month and is held at 9 Marketplace, Penzance, from 9.30am until 1.30pm, with lots of lovely local produce on offer for your day-to-day groceries, crafts and gifts. Penzance Farmers Market is also held at 9 Marketplace and takes place every Friday; here you will find quality local produce including artisan breads, jams, cheese and pastries – to name a few! This year, to celebrate Penzance as one of the most vibrant and innovative artistic towns in the country, the town is hosting the Penzance Festival of Art from 6th to 21st June. Gathering up to 1,000 local artists and creative organisations to stage exhibitions, workshops, pop-up galleries, talks and lectures, the festival will provide a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the art and beauty of this historic coastal town. Then there’s Golowan Festival (golowanfestival. org), otherwise known as Mazey Day, taking place on 28th and 29th June. This celebration of midsummer features parades, markets, music, fairs and mayhem in a colourful festival enjoyed by all generations. From small beginnings, the Penzance Literary Festival (pzlitfest.co.uk) has grown into one of the most popular events in the Cornish calendar. Taking place from 1st to 4th July this year, the festival brings visitors to the town from both the local area and from across the UK to celebrate exceptional literature in beautiful coastal surroundings.
