INDIAN Superfoods

Have you heard of the saying “you are what you eat “? This is even truer now more than ever before as the only cure for the pandemic currently is our immunity. Eating proper improves physical as well as emotional well-being. Eating healthy is not a trend it’s a way of life. Superfoods can be defined as natural ingredients rich in antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins and minerals and have vast health benefits. Majorly used as a marketing term for promoting healthy eating. Most claimed superfoods are often western origin and oriented. The foods often mentioned are not locally produced or eaten regularly. Most of the superfoods mentioned here are already used in our daily Indian household but increasing them or introducing them in our pantry will give us immense benefits. It is pivotal to understand the need to eat locally and seasonally available food. This is most effective and efficient. Here is a list of superfoods conveniently attainable in our region14 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

CUISINE |

Monagaku/Moringa

Also called “The Miracle Tree” or drumstick tree, is native to India. It is readily available in stores in fresh, dried and powder form of leaves. Moringa has medicinal properties and is beneficial for skin and hair. With physical benefits, it helps in treating anxiety and depression. It is similar to matcha green tea in using. Unlike matcha, this does not contain any caffeine. You can make moringa smoothies, energy balls, dal, soups etc. The most effortless way of using moringa is by making tea. Boil 250 ml of water and add 2 tsp of moringa leaves or powder add honey and lemon or any flavourings if desired. Strain and drink! Voila!

Haldi/ Turmeric

Designated “The Golden Spice” contains a chemical called curcumin used in food and cosmetics. It is an antioxidant and has properties such as anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic and antiinflammatory. Haldi is a staple in our households and added in many curries. Another easy and delicious way to consume is through haldi doodh or golden milk which can be either hot or cold. RecipeGolden Turmeric Milk | Haldi Doodh In a blender - take 250 ml lukewarm milk + 2 tsp edible turmeric powder + 1/4 cup honey or any sweetener of choice + 1 tsp Ginger powder + 1 tsp cinnamon powder + pinch of saffron + ice cubes (optional)

Flax Seeds

Commonly known as an egg substitute is a nutrient-rich food. Flax is very high in fibre and provides considerable amounts of protein. It is also rich in fat and is one of the best plant-based sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. It is available in-stores in whole, roasted or ground form. The powder form mixed with warm water is called a flax egg and used as an egg substitute. The roasted flax can be added on top of peanut or almond butter toast and also added as a crunch element in any dish. In recent times, flaxseed energy balls have become an internet trend.

Nuts and Seeds

The best way to get quick energy is through a raw or dry roasted handful of nuts. Eating almonds, peanut, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds can keep your appetite full and reduce food intake. They have good fats and proteins to keep you healthy. Another easy way to consume nuts and seeds is to make nut and seed jars of butter and store them in your refrigerator and adding them to your fruit bowls, smoothies, and bread toasts. RecipePeanut / any nut butterIn a blender/mixer add 250 grams roasted peanuts+ honey and salt according to taste+ 2 tsp vegetable oil (if you want it runny). 100x times better than store-bought! You can make this basic recipe into chocolate peanut butter, crunchy peanut butter and much more. You can make this using any nuts like almond, walnuts, pecans, etc.

Barley

It acts as a coolant for our body. You can use barley rice to make salads, porridge and soup. The quickest and most rewarding way is by drinking barley water. In a pot add 1/4 cup barley rice, 3 cups of water, 1 tsp salt and 1tbsp lemon (if desired). Boil this for 15 min or until the rice is puffed. Strain and drink this water throughout the day! This water also promotes weight loss and better digestion.

Coconut oil and Ghee

Most of us living in South India already use coconut oil and ghee for cooking as well as for our hair and skin in our daily routine. Coconut oil is responsible for increasing metabolism. Therefore, great for skin, hair and those with digestive issues. Ghee has a high smoke point making it great for cooking. Ghee is a pure form of fat and contains no casein, making it perfect for dairy-intolerant people. It also contains gut-friendly enzymes which help in its easier digestion. Both ghee and coconut oil are locally produced, making it a better option than olive oil. 16 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

Ginger

Most of us already use and consume ginger every day in the form of curries, tea, etc. Ginger used for cooking and medicine. It reduces nausea, improves digestion, and has many more such benefits due to its anti-inflammatory and antibactericidal properties. It is also a good source for antioxidants.

Sabja/Basil Seeds

Often confused with Mexican origin chia seeds they are quite different in all aspects. Sabja seeds should be soaked in water before consumption, while chia seeds need not. It is a coolant to the body and helps against acidity in the stomach. It is a good source of iron and vitamins hence promotes good hair and skin. Sabja also has detoxifying properties. You can mix 2-3 tsp of basil seeds in your glass of water every day and see gratifying results in no time. The key while eating is, you have to concentrate on a balanced diet or super plate that includes the superfoods. Your plate should have carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals adequately. Eating habits should be versatile and seasonal. The most important thing you should keep in mind is to eat healthily and mindfully.

FITNESS |

Q. The fitness industry has changed this pandemic what do you have to say about it? The fitness industry has got big hit in this pandemic. Now the latest trend is a home gym and online training has taken a front seat. Everyone is moving on focusing on online training, video call Workout sessions, so many fitness apps are coming into light. I’m afraid culture of the gym may vanish, going forward if things don’t change in India we may see great loss, gyms will completely diminish, and no one will ever come forward to invest in good gym and fitness. Q. Gyms can run their business by taking all precautionary measurements in the Covid scenario, what is your opinion? As we all know gyms, swimming pools and some other public gathering places/Halls are very much prone to be contagious and chances are high to spread the virus. But in my opinion, keep shutting down the business, workplace completely for long periods is not appreciable and the government must look into this. Enforce strict rules, fine high if they are not followed properly but let the gyms be open. It’s a practical thing which I’m saying, guidelines like wearing a mask, face shield will be on anyways, to achieve social distancing, take the gym floor size and capacity in account to permit the limited members inside at one given time, fix the client’s walk-in time and don’t allow anyone when floor reaches its full capacity, sanitize the machines and weight after every single use. A business might fall to 50% but it’s anytime better than keeping it closed. Q. What’s the best home workout routine one can follow this quarantine with minimum equipment available? “Any workout is the best workout”, I say. We have minimum workout equipment and lack of space at home, I would say bodyweight exercises are a foremost option but it’s not for everyone, everyone doesn’t have enough strength. So I suggest having a pull-up bar and

few resistant bands at least and yes, Dumbbells and kettle bells will also do best. Keep your workouts short and sweet, focus on metabolic conditioning, getting the best training for hypertrophy and strength goals is the biggest challenge as we have very limited access to weights, we can still get through with hypertrophy if we come up with good exercise programming focus on intensity on muscle by mixing different techniques like pre-exhaustion of working muscle, isometric hold, supersets etc. Q. How to get that enthusiasm while working out at home which we use to get at the gym? Fix your workout time, you have to plan your day keeping your exercise time in mind, prioritize it if needed. Get ready as if you are going to a regular gym, your dressing and effort you put in, for doing any work will get you the interest in that work. Play the music; it will have a great role in making good workout. It will keep you moving and will have a feel-good factor. Hire a good online coach or you need to follow a good online workout program at least so that you know what you are going to exercise today. So these all little things will motivate you and get that enthusiasm while working at home. Q. Wearing a mask and going out for a walk or run is impacting in breathing problems what do you have to say about it? Wearing a mask while working out or running will harm your performance while training, you need a lot of oxygen, the oxygen demand is high while training, so if you cover-up your nose and mouth with a mask, it will become tough for you to breath and you give up early than your muscle gets to failure. So the training can’t be fine at an optimum level. Q. What do you recommend in terms of workout and diet to keep up a strong immune system? TULIP - AUGUST, 2020 19

| FITNESS

The immune system is a very complex subject, but in short, I would say don’t mess up with the basic cycle of your system on whole. Eat right and healthy, Rest well and Move (exercise) frequently. Don’t eat too much of acidic food, no outside food as we have no guarantee of hygiene and quality, chew enough and keep it simple so your digestive system will not take much load. Don’t exercise too much, we don’t want any injuries this moment, the body must recover faster from the stress given from training. Rest enough to recover well. These things will help your system from the cellular level to fight against virus by spending more time on building immune cells, rather being busy in dealing with the mess you created or given to your system. While working out at home what things should be kept in mind as there will be no professional help to guide? Professional help or guidance on fitness has got limited in this quarantine, gyms are closed and it is risky to call anyone home due to virus spread. So the best option is to hire an online coach or enroll yourself in any online video fitness classes if you are not in a position to do either of these two then do your homework, take any experts opinion before starting any workout program, don’t push yourself too much, work in your limits and that’s okay. You have been training Kajal Agarwal how is the experience to train a celebrity like her? Training Kajal Agarwal is a super cool thing, she is such a great optimist, quick learner, very good student and she brings in the energy, good vibes on the floor with her presence. Training a celebrity is a different experience, we also get that attention, people start recognizing you and your work and I’m sure every trainer wants to be there. I’m very thankful to Kajal for all the appreciation and acknowledgement she gives me.

20 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

Any advice for young trainers? Get a good certification course done, upgrade your skills regularly, carry your passion wherever you go, do what you are supposed to do without expecting returns and be consistent. You will be paid off, don’t run behind money or fame just focus on your job, your good work will speak and eventually, everything will come to you.

The Joy Of Dressing Is An Art Rashmita Thapa, Fashion Stylist & Fashion Blogger a few years ago after being confused about what career choices to make that would actually make her feel good at work. It was quite a journey for her from studying engineering and changing her path to being a Fashion Stylist and Fashion Blogger. She always thought style is much more important than fashion, style transcends fashion. People can be stylish without being fashionable or a part of the latest trends. She was an amateur. She never had a chance to study fashion, which is why the most challenging part of her life was to swap profession from an engineer to a fashion stylist. What made it easier though was her creative ideas pouring everywhere and the bold fantasy that helped her explore. From dressing up, recreating outfits, her passion helped to come a long way. Style can make you confident—like you can crush that interview and take on the world. She gave some ideas of how to dress up this season and what’s trending. TULIP - AUGUST, 2020 27

This menswear silhouette can easily be given a feminine edge, and some of our favourite street style stars are showing us how it’s done. THE TREND GRAM

I remember this scene from the movie Devil wears Prada where Andy’s blue sweater was made fun of and funnily, today Sweaters and cardigans are back in trend. MODEL’S INSPIRATION

Oversized sleeves are everything. If you need DRAMA and ATTENTION - sleeves are your answer. It’s modern and utterly CHIC. I see a huge future for detachable sleeves. We know how crop tops have been trending for the past 2 years. Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Dua Lipa giving us the major fashion goals. Crop tops, bra top, high waist jeans, body con dresses and the list goes on. One of the key trends to come out of recent fashion weeks is the bra top. It’s high time we embrace this trend. It’s not just modern we are talking about here. Huge brands like Sabyasachi and Anita Dongre embrace the concept of a bra-like blouse which makes your outfit look elegant! 5 years back, all we wore was black, white, and red. Pastels have ruled the fashion industry lately. The fashion industry has been flattering us with so many colors and we have adapted that strongly. color block your way to stylish outfits! color block pants are a way to go.

BE A WELL DRESSED MAN

The saying goes,” the first impression is the last impression”. And it includes both physical appearance and intellectual personality. Modern men are spending riches for fashion and styling. Gone are the days when men’s wardrobe was limited to a few options. Today’s wardrobe is flooding with a variety of options. For every occasion, men are ready to steal the limelight with awesome style. One of the smartest investments of men is denim jeans. Enough with dark pieces of denim, and switch to faded jeans. The most controversial shirt of men’s wardrobe – oversized shirt can contribute to numerous great style. An oversized shirt is an incredibly versatile piece only if worn correctly. The best way to compliment an oversized shirt is often with a fitted pair of dark skinny jeans or chinos as the combination creates a good contrast. Oversize shirts are the most comfortable and trendiest of all shirts. Men are embracing mix and match fashion. The ability to mix and match gives the freedom to discover a new style every day. Men are all-ready to experiment with colors, textures, and patterns. The only thumb rule for mix and match fashion is “proportion”. And men are playing well with proportion. Mix and Match is not just stylish but also economical and sustainable fashion. The trench’s origins are as murky as the weather it’s designed for. Perhaps because the trench is so easy to style. “It’s the most versatile of all outerwear options, as it can be dressed up or down seamlessly,” This season, the trench is going large. Long and often oversized too, the switch-up leaves more than enough room for suiting or thick winter knitwear underneath. But the point is more about formality. Floating and flapping in the wind makes the style a lot more casual, reflecting wider trends in menswear and lends the style to high-low outfits that involve denim or even sportswear. Chelsea’s are best paired with a trench coat and denim. Think of athleisure as the best thing that has ever happened to your sense of style. And while you may turn up your nose at the thought of athleisure because you a) hate portmanteaus and b) think that athleisure wear is comprised of the aforementioned relics of you to keep an open mind. they are extremely comfortable and look great while you’re at it. It’s all about loving yourself Why self-love is the best type of love

Admiring yourself doesn’t mean you believe you’re the cleverest, most talented, and most beautiful person in the world. Rather, when you love yourself and you accept your so-called flaws and appreciate these so-called faults as something that makes you who you are. When you love yourself you have kindness for yourself. We asked some of the cities favourites on how they reaffirm themselves with self-love. -By Inas Inayat U

“Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your wellbeing to please others

In a candid conversation with Kajal Aggarwal. An impeccable actor who has done many movies in Indian cinema. Everyone loves her for the roles she has done in the movies Magadheera being one of the blockbuster hits among them. 34 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

COVER STORY |

Q. What is your take on self love? Many people mistakenly believe that self-love is the same as narcissism, or having a big ego. It’s not. Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. Selflove means not settling for less than you deserve. Loving yourself doesn’t mean you think you’re the smartest, most talented, and most beautiful person in the world. Instead, when you love yourself you accept your so-called weaknesses, appreciate these so-called shortcomings as something that makes you who you are. When you love yourself you have compassion for yourself. You take care of yourself like you’d take care of a friend in distress. You treat yourself kindly. You don’t nitpick and criticize yourself. Self-love isn’t about instant gratification. A new pair of shoes or eating an entire pizza might make you feel good in the moment, but the feeling isn’t lasting–and could be damaging in the long run. Self-love means giving yourself what your body, brain, and soul needs for the marathon that is life. It isn’t hedonism and it isn’t chasing a physical or emotional high. The practice of self-love is the practice of nourishing yourself. Q. Tell us something that you love and are proud of about yourself? Hard work, consistency, discipline in lifestyle, strength of mind, constant determination and most importantly kindness towards all are qualities I put my best effort and practice towards. Q. How can one learn to embrace their flaws? Embracing your flaws is not easy and cannot happen overnight. It takes tremendous patience and constant work. Self acceptance is definitely the most gratifying gift you can give yourself and consequently strengthen bonds with others as well. Q. How do you seek comfort when you feel low? Invest in good habits, good friends, and productive utilisation of your time, learn to develop constructive skill and make it a habit to spend time nourishing your soul with a spiritual practice of any kind that you can connect to.

| COVER STORY We often get so busy with our lives, it almost is like we need to remind ourselves that we come first and need to look after ourselves. For the most part, taking time out for myself came to me naturally, be it going to the gym and investing time in getting fit or eating healthy and sleeping well. The pandemic did change the way our lives function and suddenly it felt like we had all this time to see how we really are spending our time and how much of it is really dedicated to ourselves. Owing to the pandemic, I have become careful and diligent towards how I look after myself physically and mentally. I have paid attention to what makes me feel good and now I just ensure I give myself the time and care it needs to feel rejuvenated and mentally peaceful every day. Starting with working out, I used to enjoy going to the gym every day, so even during the lockdown, I signed up for classes and take an hour or so out to do that. I used to binge while watching TV shows which really made me feel terrible after, so now I practise mindful eating and spending that time in changing that habit has helped me a lot. I have made it to a point to learn a new language and read every day. I get motivated when I learn something new or read a good book. I guess for me work takes up a lot of time but I haven’t let that eat into my personal time and having that love for yourself to take a couple of hours of “me time” makes a massive difference in how you feel mentally and physically. The mantra is to just spend time with yourself to really get to know what makes you feel good! Sruthi Reddy (Growth Marketing Manager @ColorTokens-Ex-ISB class of 2020)

PET CARE DURING COVID-19 CRISIS We are living in uncertain times as the novel Coronavirus has changed our lives beyond recognition in the past few months. The uncertainty and unpredictability of the situation coupled with stringent measures like social distancing and home quarantine have taken their toll on hoomans and pets alike. Here are some ways to take care of your pet amid the Corona crisis: VETERINARY CARE In these uncertain times, vets from across Hyderabad have joined hands as corona warriors to take care of our furry friends. The unprecedented corona pandemic has affected vet clinics, hospitals as well as charitable organisations. Vet n Pet Hospital, the Animal Care Clinic, Super Speciality Veterinary Hospital and Confet Vet Clinic are some of the vet clinics and animal care centres that have opened their doors for pets during these uncertain times. Veterinarians are facing a lot of challenges during these tough times such as unavailability of nursing staff and prefer to stick to online consultations for minor ailments while being available on appointment only basis for urgent cases. All essential protection measures ranging from checking the temperature of pet parents to allowing only one person and his/her pet in the clinic at a given point of time are being employed. Pet owners should talk with their dog’s vet and figure out a safe way to take him there. Pet parents are also worried about the transmission of novel Coronavirus among pets. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that 42 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

COVID-19 cannot spread to pets. However, dogs can suffer from canine Coronavirus the vaccine for which is easily accessible. Viral coughing, tick and flea problems, dermatological infections, digestive disorders are on the rise due to lack of regular veterinary care. Pet parents are advised to keep a stock of essential medicines at home to tackle minor issues.

STRESS AND DEPRESSION AMONG PETS Home isolation amid the Corona scare has affected pets and pet parents alike and has spiked the anxiety levels of both. Appetite changes, isolation, digestive problems and clingy behaviour such as excessive rubbing or licking are signs your furry friends are going through a stressful period. If you notice that your pet is going through a phase of low mental health, make sure you help them get enough sleep to help them relax. Increasing the number of playtime sessions does wonder to your pet’s overall well-being and also keeps them engaged and occupied. stress and lockdown anxiety. Cuddling and hugging your pet often helps to lower the stress levels of both parties. You can also play soothing music to calm down anxious pets. Pet owners need to take special care of their pet’s diet to ensure they are mentally and physically healthy during the lockdown. Raw, uncooked food and chilled meals must be avoided at all times as they may increase the risk of infections. Owners must stock up on essentials like pet food and important medicines. Nutritious and balanced meals must be provided to pet dogs and cats to help overcome problems like obesity. Puzzles, rope toys and long treat dispensers can be employed to mentally stimulate homebound dogs and provide them with some much-needed exercise. Happy Tailz Games provides the owners with the option of wooden handcrafted puzzles to engage their pets while building up the delicate bond with them. Pet parents must keep themselves calm at all times as furry companions can sense nervousness. They must provide their pets with physical exercise including walks around the house and confined areas. Games like Hide n Seek and Fetch are old favourites. Pet parents should aim to keep their routine as normal as possible to avoid the risk of stressing out or over attending to the pets. Extra time at home can be utilised to teach them some new tricks. With the novel Coronavirus spreading to 216 countries across the globe, pet owners are worried about running out of pet essentials and supplies. Owners need not fret as Hyderabad based stores are making efforts to keep essentials in supply.

It offers lightweight pet loos for dogs that are equipped with a water flushing system with an automated timer. The toilet can be set up in the balcony or any other open areas. Alternatively, pet owners can try to recreate the kind of surface their pets relieve on using soil, pebbles and bricks.

IF YOU TEST COVID POSITIVE? Pets can carry the novel Coronavirus on their fur and thus should not be allowed to go out and interact with other pets or human beings. Make sure you take all necessary precautions like sanitising your hands, covering your face with a protective mask, wearing gloves and covering your hair with a cap whenever you interact with your furry bundle. As COVID-19 spreads through droplet transmission, ensure the least possible touch and actively discourage activities like hugging and kissing. Regular baths and disinfection measures are necessary to make sure that your beloved cat or dog does not become a source of virus contamination. If you are self-isolating at home, you can contact a dog boarding facility to take care of your pet’s needs until you are feeling better. Alternatively, select an emergency contact who will take care of your pet in case your symptoms worsen and you are hospitalised. Keep your pet’s vet and your emergency contact informed of your situation. You can also create an emergency care kit by bundling up your pet’s favourite foods and toys to give to your emergency contact. This should be supplemented with a First Aid Kit along with your pet’s medical documents and vet’s contact details for unforeseen situations.

SKIN DEEP | BEAUTY

We see pictures of beautiful women all around us, be it on Instagram, Twitter, on billboards and hoardings, or even your T.V. screens. For a very long time in our history beauty has followed the concept of fair and lovely, having a light complexion, without even a trace of a scar or a blemish was the painstakingly difficult standard women were forced to achieve. For the past few years, however, the Indian market seems to be changing. Women of all skin tones, scarred or unscarred, are now being accepted and encouraged. With several fashion weeks seeing dusky models taking to the ramps, various advertisements confidently featuring women with the so-called “imperfect” skin, and celebrities and influencers raising their voices for the cause with social movements like #nofilter and #nomakeup, more and more young girls across the country are now optimistic to set foot in formerly unapproachable industries. Here are a few young women who made a mark in the industry while standing strong in support of this new and liberating concept of beauty.

Sowmya Thanam, Model Instagram: @sowmya_thanam Being a model is never easy, but being a coloured model is twice the effort. There are many times when my clients tried to change the way I look. They used to want to make me look a shade or two lighter, and in the beginning, I didn’t say anything thinking that I won’t get any more modelling opportunities. But, as time went by, I started standing up for myself. Once I was called down for an audition by a Modelling agency. Everything was going on well until the lady told me that I had to get a ‘fairness treatment’ because dusky models aren’t really models. I walked out of there that very second and never looked back. Thankfully, it’s not the same anymore. People are starting to realise how there are different forms of beauty. Now, the industry is more accepting of people who look different, speak different, and have different features. We still have a long way to go, but we have already achieved so much. My tips for maintaining healthy skin would be for people who love junk food like me, which can be problematic when it comes to skin. Thankfully, I was blessed with good skin. But I keep myself hydrated and moisturise my skin whenever I can. I am more of natural look kind of person. So, I don’t wear makeup often. With my skin tone, it’s not easy to find the right foundation. My go to foundation is Fit me 330 Toffee and I’m more inclined towards dark coloured lipsticks.

Instagram: @sravyakothalanka Even in 2019, there still are hypocrites who treat dark skinned women like dust. Even now when I walk into any beauty or skincare store, they suggest me FAIRNESS creams and face washes first. I don’t even ask. We need to educate women about colourism and double standards. Personally, however I haven’t faced any issues. Since I use only my brain and voice, my looks don’t really matter. May be some people are biased about my appearance, because it’s unconventional, but I never faced problems particularly because of my colour. One thing I want to tell any girl aspiring to make a mark in the industry is, always strive to be the best version of yourself, no one else’s, and keep working without expecting immediate results. I don’t do much to maintain good skin. I have a big appetite and involuntarily drink a lot of water. I’m more of a home remedies person. I experiment with fruits, vegetables and natural ingredients at home whenever I want to pamper myself. And I’ve never been keen about makeup on myself. I’m just a liner-and-lipstick girl. My mum is my beauty doctor and I consider what she recommends. Recently she suggested me a beauty box from MARCUS SPURWAY. I love it.

Bhawana Nilap, Actor Instagram: @Instagrammer I am a dusky person. This colour in the film industry is a huge issue. But the modelling industry sees it as something beautiful and desirable. The restrictions in the film industry made me feel suffocated, but the modelling industry felt open and free. When I became Miss Fresher at my college, many people questioned, “How did she do it?” That girl is so dusky, there are so many girls who are fairer than her.” It didn’t matter to me. Because in the end I was the one standing there, successful. And they were left standing behind me and talking about me. So, if anyone wants to enter either the modelling or film industry now shouldn’t feel discouraged at all. The times are changing, and so are the people. For healthy skin I would suggest lots and lots of water and a fruit-induced diet. I don’t really use any products when I’m not on set. I think limiting your usage of make-up and letting your skin breathe is a great way to maintain healthy skin.

Greeshma Turakhia, Model, Interior Designer Instagram: @greeshma_ In the world of social media where everything’s perfect, as a model we really struggle to “Fit in”. Back in 2016, I was really chubby and due to my height (I’m 5’4) my insecurities really started to kick in. Last year, I suddenly had break outs due to an unhealthy lifestyle which also pushed me towards depression. And no skin care seemed to help. I’ve come to a realisation if you don’t feel good from the inside then it’s surely going to be seen from the outside. To all the women out there who are insecure of the way look, just speak up, believe in yourself and trust your inner voice. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you know to be true.Eating and sleeping on time is so important, especially for women because we tend to get health issues sooner. Coming to the industry, I think we’re now in a modern era where dark is beautiful and colourism has become such a high fashion. Honestly, I’m so jealous of those girls who are out there with dusky skin, it’s so divine. And how they carry themselves is even more irresistible. We all have different skin types. My skin is usually very dry and sensitive. I don’t have a skin care routine but I always keep myself moisturised. I prefer home-remedies over products. I stick to my diet where I eat lots of raw boiled veggies, fruits and drink lots of water and 30 minutes of yoga or exercise is a must.

Raseeka Arul Kumar, Model Instagram: @the.styleseeker People approach me through my Instagram profile and on my Instagram there’s not really a lot of pictures of me as my real self, they’re all mostly pictures where my face is covered in makeup and nothing is really visible, so when they do look at me in real life they do say things like you have a lot of marks on your face and they do wonder how to manage it, but I think at the end of the day makeup and editing really manages the problem. I think the industry will, however, grow to accept it more because some people have already started doing that. They believe scars are a part of you and you shouldn’t be hiding them. Though few people have joined the bandwagon, I think it will reach a point where more people will believe in this. To have healthy skin, stick to the basics. Eat well, sleep well and moisturise. Do what works for you and not what is trending or popular. The brand that usually works for me is Maybelline, so most of my products are Maybelline, but like I said, one should choose what works best for them.

BEAUTY |

Fanny Gandhi, Model Instagram: @bigeyedbabe This was a major issue a long time back, but people are now understanding that beauty doesn’t come in one colour. I have seen so many dark coloured models ruling the industry. Khoudia Diop is one of my fav models, who was bullied for her dark colour. Now, she is the queen of modelling. While I have faced many problems in my modelling stint, none of them were because of my skin or my colour. And I hope I do not face them in future. As a kid I always thought modelling is something which is not made for the normal girls. You know, you have to be that drop-dead gorgeous girl with a perfect figure and height to be a model. It always attracted me towards itself, but I did not have guts to be one. But when I entered college, I saw myself amidst pretty women from different backgrounds, breaking all the stereotypes made me think that I can also be a part of it. And seeing those ladies, just as normal as me, made me think if they can do it, so can I. My skincare routine is majorly to drink lots of water. I try to drink at least 1 bottle of water every hour. I avoid junk food, eat more fruits and salads and green vegetables. I try to use less chemicals on my skin so I don’t really have a go-to product. One thing I can say for sure is do not try new products on your skin. First read about it. See if it gives any side effects to your skin or not.

Bahaar Gupta, Model Instagram: @bahaar_2312 I started modelling pretty recently and so far, I must say, my journey has been smooth sailing. When I initially started getting offers, I couldn’t really pose well, but eventually I learnt. I have so far not faced any issues be it related to my colour or any issue like breakouts or acne. So, I believe things have definitely changed. While some people choose to stay in the age-old mentality of fair is beautiful and a model should be “perfect”, most people have moved on. If I had to advice someone on how to maintain good skin, I would definitely suggest washing your face three times a day and drink a lot of water and eat more and more fruits. I swear by a few products and stick to them. Lakme Absolute perfect radiance night cream before sleep, and Lakme Absolute skin gloss for everyday use. MCaffeine Naked and Rich Choco body butter works wonders as a moisturiser. Finally, I really trust Biotique Botanicals’ under-eye cream to prevent eye bags. But of course, people should make sure any product suits them before trying it.

To a healthier and more potent lifestyle- Busting myths Thanks to the food world filling up with trends, fads, and stacks of misinformation, it’s become increasingly hard to find reliable nutrition information. How many times have we dropped our plans of hitting the gym just because of people propagating that once we stop working out, pounds of fat get added to us? We personally conducted a survey where people sent us their top health myths and queries and well, guess what? We’ve got all your doubts covered! Here we have the very knowledgeable and renowned nutritionist of our city, Dr. Deepa Agarwal bust all your common myths and help you in becoming healthier.

Does a rice diet makes you fat?

White rice and other starchy carbohydrates have a bad reputation when it comes to weight loss. You will often find it on lists of forbidden foods lumped in with things like pastries and cookies, which are nothing more than empty calories. As with so much else in life, it’s not that simple. Rice alone won’t make you fat unless you exceed your daily recommended caloric allowance day after day and pair it with fried foods or high-fat sauces. If you choose whole-grain rice and watch your portion sizes, you won’t have to cut rice out of your diet to lose or maintain a healthy weight.

Tea on an empty stomach lands you with acidity. Is this true? Heading for that freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee first thing in the morning can do you more harm than good. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach increases acidity, which in turn causes heartburn and indigestion throughout the day. Drinking tea on an empty stomach can suppress the secretion of gastric juices and reduces bile and acid in the stomach. It can also reduce your appetite.

Plucking out grey hair will induce more grey hair growth. Myth or Fact?

Plucking grey hair will not cause three or more grey hairs to grow back in its place. However, plucking is not an advisable activity because it can destroy the hair follicle and possibly lead to bald patches. Overall, the real truth behind greying is that it is dependent on multiple factors. While further studies need to be done, reducing stress and smoking will not only potentially decrease your chance of greying prematurely, but also have other positive health benefits.

Does Eating chocolate gives you acne?

It’s an old wives’ tale that chocolate causes/worsens acne and has yet to be proven by science. Caffeine in chocolate is a major culprit. Science says that dark chocolate does not cause acne, but if you eat a lot of sweets, sugary foods, processed foods, or fast foods, all things can contribute to acne/problem skin. I would say that eating dark chocolate will not affect your acne unless you’re allergic to something in the chocolate, allergic to chocolate, or if it’s high in sugar. Sugar can wreak havoc on your skin and greasy/processed/fast foods can be hell on your skin as well.

HEALTH | Is it true that Once you stop going to the gym, you’ll gain weight faster? When you are gymming, you gain some extra muscles. Say that now you suddenly stopped exercising. Your daily movements/activity has reduced. So your body does not need those extra muscles that you have developed. Those muscle will start to go off. Now this is the process that makes you look ‘fat’. Suddenly your toned up muscles will loosen up which in term will loosen your skin a bit and this is what makes you look fat/chubby. On top of that, we tend to eat more when we exercise and even if you suddenly drop your exercising to zero, your eating quantity will still not go down immediately but will take time. But now since you have stopped exercising, the extra food quantity going in will be turned to fat. So, becoming fat is not because you have left the gym, but because you have left the gym and your food intake is still almost the same.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Clarity please.

Apples have a good claim to promote health. They contain Vitamin C, which aids the immune system, and phenols, which reduce cholesterol. They also reduce tooth decay by cleaning one’s teeth and killing off bacteria. It has also been suggested by Cornell University researchers that the quercetin found in apples protects brain cells against neuro-degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s Disease.

You need to drink 8 glasses of water everyday. Do you?

The body is about 60% water, give or take. You are constantly losing water from your body, primarily via urine and sweat. To prevent dehydration, you need to drink adequate amounts of water. There are many different opinions on how much water you should be drinking every day. Health authorities commonly recommend eight 8-ounce glasses, which equals about 2 litres, or half a gallon. This is called the 8×8 rule and is very easy to remember. However, some health gurus believe that you need to sip on water constantly throughout the day, even when you’re not thirsty. As with most things, this depends on the individual. Many factors (both internal and external) ultimately affect your need for water.

Is Organic food better for the body?

Organic limits the type of pesticide, not the use of it. Often the naturally derived pesticides aren’t as effective and need to be used more often. At first I thought it might be better for your health. Then I found it wasn’t, according to lots of studies. But I still was glad it was there because it doesn’t use pesticides. Then I found out it uses more pesticides. Now I think it’s horribly overpriced food. Synthetic pesticides are specifically designed to be harmful to pests and nothing else. Birds, beneficial insects, soil biomes and even people are affected more by organic pesticides at staggering rates. But we buy into it because we believe in the internet age.

Is Coffee bad for health?

For years, doctors warned people to avoid coffee because it might increase the risk of heart disease and stunt growth. They worried that people could become addicted to the energy that high amounts of caffeine provided, leading them to crave more and more coffee as they became tolerant to higher amounts of caffeine. Experts also worried that coffee had damaging effects on the digestive tract, which could lead to stomach ulcers, heartburn and other ills. All of this concern emerged from studies done decades ago that compared coffee drinkers to non-drinkers on a number of health measures, including heart problems and mortality. Coffee drinkers, it seemed, were always worse off.

Let Your Smile Shine Dr.Safi Quraishi (MDS – Orthodontics) and Dr. Sana Roohi (Cosmetic Dental Surgeon), the power couple behind one of Hyderabad’s finest dental hospital – The Dental Room. The dynamic duo shares a common passion for making a sustainable difference in the quality of life by providing the best dental care with complete patient satisfaction. They are young and are trained in newer technologies with state-of-the-art equipment. Dr. Safi leads the way in cosmetic dental makeovers using braces and Invisalign Orthodontics. And they are here to answer some of the most common dental queries. What are cavities? How to prevent them? Dental caries is the damage done to a tooth when decay-causing bacteria in your mouth make acids that attack the tooth surface. The most obvious tip to prevent cavities is to maintain good oral hygiene. Brush twice daily, floss between your teeth, and use a fluoridated mouthwash. Also, you can get sealants placed on your chewing teeth by your dentist. Sealants protect the vulnerable areas of your tooth by ‘sealing out’ food and plaque. Why are cavities caused even after brushing twice daily? Your tooth anatomy, saliva consistency and diet play a key role in cavity formation. If you have crowded teeth, or receding gums, it’s much harder for a brush to access these areas. If you are constantly snacking throughout the day, harmful sugars stay in your saliva for a longer time. And saliva washes away plaque and neutralises harmful acids. If you have a dry mouth, your teeth are more likely to decay. Do chocolates really cause cavities? Eat all day – Get decay! Not just chocolates, but sticky candies, carbohydrates and acidic drinks breakdown into sugars which cause the bacteria to release acids which damage tooth enamel. Frequent snacking throughout the day worsens this scenario as they cause repeated acid attacks as we keep munching. Are wisdom teeth extractions necessary? Wisdom teeth are the third molars in the very back of our mouth. Often, wisdom teeth don’t have the space to grow properly and end up creating problems for your other teeth, which manifest as pain, gum disease or extensive tooth decay. In such cases, it’s mandatory to undergo wisdom tooth extractions. 58 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

How can we improve teeth colour? Scaling or professional cleaning every 6 months will remove surface stains, making your teeth appear whiter. Once your teeth have been thoroughly cleaned, talk to your dentist about whitening treatments like bleaching. They instantly brighten your pearls by 2-4 shades. Also, limit the food that makes your teeth to stain like tea or coffee. Smoking or any use of tobacco should be avoided. What is Root Canal Treatment? And when is it done? Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root, prevent re-infection and save the natural tooth. Pain is one of the main indicators that something is wrong with the root of your tooth. Pain may or may not be accompanied with a severely decayed tooth, a cracked tooth, or swollen gums. How often should one see a dentist? To keep your teeth and gums healthy, have regular check-ups and professional cleaning every 6 months. During the dental check-up, your dentist will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas that you may not see or feel. Are dental treatments safe during this pandemic? Ensure that your dental clinic is equipped with fumigation systems having indoor air cleaning filters. The instruments should be thoroughly sterilised according to the guidelines. The staff should be equipped with disposable PPE’s and a complete patient screening including antigen tests on their arrival is to be done. With the above precautions and care, dental procedures involving pain, infection and trauma can be carried out. However, cosmetic procedures are not the need of the hour.

What is the best age for braces? Braces are most often prescribed during 9-14 years of age while the bones of the head and mouth are still growing and teeth are more conducive to straightening. Adults are also getting braces more frequently. In fact, 20 percent of people with braces today are adults. Technically, you’re never too old for braces When are braces necessary? Symptoms that can indicate you need braces include teeth that are crowded and crooked, spaces between your teeth or having extra teeth. Also, teeth that don’t close over each other and teeth which are forwardly placed give an unaesthetic appearance and require braces. Braces have oral-health benefits beyond cosmetic reasons. How do you know if your child may needs braces?

A child’s habits have a lot to tell if he/she may require braces in the future. Some signs include breathing through the mouth, thumb sucking, using a pacifier, and early or late loss of baby teeth. Do orthodontic treatments relapse? The day your braces come off, you are provided with retainers and instructions on how to wear them. Any irresponsibility while wearing them, gives rise to a potential relapse. Another reason why teeth relapse is that they aren’t yet fully fixed in their new places properly. So ensure you get your orthodontic treatment done only by a boardcertified Orthodontist. What are invisible braces? Clear aligners are a virtually invisible and removable alternative to braces. With clear aligners, there are no brackets to come off or wires to break and poke. Clear aligners can be removed for eating, drinking and special events also making it easier to brush and floss. Also, you need not visit the dentist monthly for adjustments. This makes it very popular amongst adults who are constantly travelling and also for the appearance-conscious who don’t want to flash a metal smile. How to take care of bleeding gums? Bleeding gums are the most common symptom of gum disease. Deep scaling twice a year with your dentist, and having a diet rich in Vitamin C and K shall reduce it. Dentistry is a wonderfully satisfying profession. And at The Dental Room, we are driven to achieve happy smiles through complete safety and satisfaction. Are We Living In A Filtered Reality?

-By Umera Riyaz

Whenever we open our feeds we are surrounded by pictures. Pictures of our food, our cute pets, the sunsets, flat lays, and faces. Faces of celebrities, friends, and families. However, you may notice one thing common in all these pictures; face filters and beauty edits. Be it a model or your neighbor next door, we all use filters. On those bad hair days or a sudden acne attack filters have been our saviours. From covering those small blemishes, hiding our blackheads and pores leaving us with a flawless face on the screen. Does the constant use of filters make us concerned with the face we see in the mirror? It has been noticed in youngsters to be worried and concerned about their looks. Concern for skincare and physical health is great, but the obsession over minor flaws is an alarming sign of mental health issues. 60 AUGUST, 2020 TULIP

These mental health issues can be noticed in early teens as they go through hormonal changes, which often make many changes in their bodies. Teens and young adults often see themselves on screens, either through their front cameras with filters on or an edited photo. This constant use of filters and edits hides their real face and this illusion becomes the perception of a flawless face that they regularly try to achieve. They look at themselves and peers through these filtered and edited photos and compare themselves in the mirror, and if they can’t achieve the same look, in reality, it throws them down mentally and physically. Many face social anxiety and start going on diets although they don’t require any of it.

LIFESTYLE |

Teenagers and young adults face Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD). BDD is a mental illness where an individual is over-concerned and over-obsessed with minor flaws present in a person which otherwise can’t be easily noticed by the others. Nevertheless, a person affected with Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD) will regularly cover their flaws using cosmetics or any medication either prescribed by doctors or through google. Some may even try correcting those flaws or defects through surgeries. Every illness has its symptoms. Some symptoms of body dysmorphia are low self-esteem, the constant need for reassurance of beauty, avoiding social gatherings, obsessing over small to little flaws, comparing themselves to others, belief that their flaws make them ugly and lack of self-confidence. BDD can trigger other complications and mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, suicidal tendencies, mood disorders, and substance abuse. Although there is no known cause for body dysmorphia, many psychologists suggest that face filters and beauty edits can soon become a cause. One major cause is the history of Body Dysmorphia Disorder in the family. For severe cases, therapy like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and medication is given. Now, looking after your body doesn’t mean you have Body Dysmorphia Disorder, but the constant need for a perfect look may lead you there. It can also drive you to low confidence, self-esteem, social anxiety, depression, and negative thoughts about your appearance. There have been cases where people have over-exercised and hurt themselves physically by breaking bones and horrible muscle pulls. How To Help Yourself l Remember you are more than just a face. Your capabilities, and intelligence that makes you, you! l Talk to a friend or someone you can confine with, share your thoughts, you may realise your friends also have the same ideas about themselves and their appearance. l Accept your flaws and embrace them. There is no shame in accepting the way we look. We are unique and special in our way. l Lastly, love yourself first!

| LIFESTYLE “Everywhere around us, we have unrealistic beauty standards. From the various filters on Instagram & Facebook giving a user flawless skin, to beauty ads with fair, slim girls airbrushed to an inch of reality to even newspapers choosing to feature images of the ‘perfect’ woman from stock photos - is it any wonder then that the youth have come to define beauty by these norms? It takes time to understand that real beauty is not something that can be manipulated and comes from within every individual. While it’s certainly fine to use beauty products to enhance one’s look, it is important to understand that the true beauty of a person is not dependent on them. Unrealistic filters on social media platforms to create the so-called perfect photos are OK if the concepts of beauty are clear and people don’t put pressure on themselves to look like that ALL THE TIME in real life. Filters are fun, and they should be just that, not a source of disappointment or misery or considered a standard of beauty, in any manner!” Namrata Sadhvani, City Editor - English (Hyderabad) - Mosmpresso and Parenting and Lifestyle Influencer

“Face filters causing Body Dysmorphia is real and a serious issue, because the overall idea of being “PERFECT” in someone else’s perspective is damaging. Especially among youngsters, having a chase for perfection is always left unsatisfied, which leads to serious issues in mental health and that can last for life. The effects of this in total are so damaging that a person eventually starts hiding from public interactions because “they don’t look like their selfies”. Marzia Ali, Astronomy Artist and Founder of The Duende Box.

“The whole trend of using filters and photoshop started with the Instagram “celebrities” selling lies in the name of creativity. If you see the pictures of most of the Instagram models or famous faces, you’ll notice the flawlessness which is completely untrue. We as people look at them and feel bad about our own selves and try more and more to be like them, thus using filters on social applications or photoshop to achieve something untrue. The whole trend should be called out for its uselessness and fake beauty standards because nothing is more beautiful than what we have been gifted with. Always remember- beauty will fade with age, your nature and personality defines you and is what people will remember about you even after you’re gone.” Insha Iqbal, Fashion Model, and a Dental Student

Hima Das dedicates upgraded Asian Games gold medal to corona warriors

IPL 2020 will be most-watched ever, daily COVID testing needed: KXIP co-owner Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia on Friday advocated daily testing of players during the IPL and predicted that the upcoming edition in the UAE will be the most-watched in the tournament’s history. Wadia’s comments came after IPL chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed that the T20 league will be held from September 19 to November 8. All teams are now awaiting the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) from the BCCI, which will finalise the logistics in the IPL Governing Council meet next week. “Strict safety protocols have to be put in place both for off-field and on-field activities to make the IPL safe and successful. They should not be compromised at all,” Wadia told PTI.

Bahrain, which had topped the 4×400 mixed relay final, was disqualified after Kemi Adekoya was handed a fouryear ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for failing a dope test. The Indian quartet of Mohammed Anas, MR Poovamma, Hima Das and Arokia Rajiv had clocked 3:15:71 behind Bahrain (3:11:89). Celebrating the news, Hima dedicated her gold medal to the frontline workers in the fight against coronavirus pandemic. She wrote on Instagram, “I would like to dedicate my upgraded gold medal of 4×400 mixed relay event of Asian Games 2018 to police, doctors and all other Coronawarriors who are working selflessly in these difficult times of Covid-19 to ensure our safety and good health. Respect for all corona-warriors.” India had originally lodged an appeal against Bahrain for ‘obstruction’ after the mixed relay race, alleging that a Bahraini sprinter had impeded HimaDas’ way during the race. However, that appeal had been turned down and India had been awarded silver.

TAROT |

Aries Everything’s going to get seriously better, as the Solar System is working well for you as far as sheer fun and risk-taking is concerned. After the 7th the stars will make you chatty and communicative, but beware of being too provocative!

Taurus

Gemini

You’ll be in the mood to make your home (or student pad) more beautiful, comfortable and lovely to look at. Do something romantic on the 24th and give your imagination plenty of freedom.

Be careful – your computer will explode with over-work. You will be ultracommunicative. Perhaps a politician, teacher or jobs worth has got up your nose; in any event, you can’t hold back any longer from telling someone how you feel.

Leo

Your mind is working brilliantly, but in overdrive. Ideas are flooding in, and you could be a bit more than damaged by impulsiveness, especially after the 7th. If you calm down a bit and give your thoughts, plans and ideas time to mature before taking action, everything will fall into place after August 22th.

Virgo Cancer Your mood will be nostalgic, so it’ll be a good time at which to visit your favourite Antique Mall and add to your collection of precious jewellery, silver or vintage Ballanciaga.

Libra This is a splendid time at which to entertain close friends and family and people you’d like to get to know better. You’ll be looking your best and will positively doze Libran charm. Your relationship will take on a serious note around the 13th – a good time at which to finalise long term plans or resolve ongoing problems.

You’ll be thinking big, planning big (Mercury). You’ll be flirting, loving, entertaining and being entertained, and being a Big Spender, (Venus); but after the 9th you might have to be patient when it comes to new lovers.

Scorpio Indications working for you early in the month will lead to your having to go in for canny plotting and planning around August 15th – 17th. All will be resolved when you take the trouble to get to the bottom of what’s happening and are then able to take assertive action.

Aquarius Capricorn Don’t attempt to force issues until after the 6th, after which you can make as much of a fuss as you like, so that you get satisfactory results and feel smug that you’ve put the erring ones strictly in their place.

If you’re not seriously committed they may make you think seriously about your relationship and consider sacrificing just a bit of that independence for greater security and permanence. However, if you and your partner are a real item know that if you take the lead you’ll both have some memorable and enjoyable experiences.

Sagittarius You’ll do extremely well, whatever you have or want to do this month. Travelling will be great; if you’re a student you’ll get praise and or good grades; and if you’re working on an important project it’ll move forward without very much stress.

Pisces Talk to your best friend or lover about how you’re feeling, especially if you want to do something, new, different, and special. At present your potential is getting a terrific boost from friendly planets, and crying out to be exploited.
