CASTLE LUNA Alburquerque
CASTLE OF LA PUEBLA DE ALCOCER Puebla de Alcocer
Rayan fortress
The great viewpoint
Luna’s Castle is one of the most important and best preserved medieval fortresses in the Iberian Peninsula. Small in size but of great strategic value due to its location near the border with Portugal, it has four defensive enclosures that make it virtually impregnable. The imposing keep and the Villa Adentro or medieval Jewish quarter are most noteworthy.
It was in the 15th century when Puebla de Alcocer was declared a town and given to Don Gutierre de Sotomayor, Master of the Order of Alcantara, who built this castle on the remains of another existing fortress. It has a strong, closed and compact character provided by its high and thick walls and the great height of the Torre del Homenaje built with a cylindrical shape stands out.
The views from the Torre del Homenaje are spectacular, offering a wonderful view of the Valley of La Serena, with its reservoir of the same name, and the plains of La Siberia.
It is named after Don Alvaro de Luna, Master of the Order of Santiago and Constable of Castile who, between 1445 and 1453, undertook the construction of some of the most important elements of the castle. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/Castillo-de-Alburquerque/
