PÓSITO DE HORNACHOS Hornachos Refuge from the Moorish culture Hornachos was the last Moorish stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula until the expulsion decree signed by Felipe II in 1610 was formalised. One of the most emblematic buildings in Hornachos, El Pósito, dates from the Mudejar period. It is an old repository built between the two valleys that have marked the history of the municipality; that of the Moors and that of the Christians.

CONVENT OF SAN BENITO Alcántara Centre of monastic wisdom

This building, promoted in the 16th century by the Catholic Monarchs to house the Order of Alcántara, is one of the most beautiful convents in Extremadura. Learn the story of how the French, during the Napoleonic invasions, acquired a book that accumulated all the culinary knowledge of the monks of Alcántara and whose recipes were introduced into French cuisine and used by the best master chefs of the neighbouring country.

It was declared a National Monument in 1914. At present, the Alcántara Classical Theatre Festival is held on this site.

This building currently houses the Moorish Culture Interpretation Centre, whose purpose is to reflect on the history of these Spanish Muslims who were expelled from the country. www.turismoextremadura.com/es/explora/El-Posito-de-Hornachos
