Time flies when you’re having fun! It only feels like yesterday that our last December issue went to press. I’m always up for a trip down nostalgia lane (my favourite lane!) to evaluate the growth of myself as a person, my career and of course my bundle of joy that is Ohlala magazine. I’m so proud of what she has accomplished and continually strives to achieve as the ultimate destination for the ‘Modern Middle Eastern Woman’. No matter what age you are, the festive season will always mean glitter, and lots of it. From the twinkling tinsel to the flashy fashion, it’s not Winter without a generous dose of glitz, and there’s plenty to be found on our Style Focus pages. The old attitude of saving your sparkle for after-dark has been replaced by a new appreciation for daytime glitz. So you can throw that trench on with blue jeans and trainers, or style that skirt with a rollneck jumper and boots - because sequins are for life, not just for this season. Widely regarded as one of the most important women in jewellery design of the 20th century, Marina Bulgari left her family’s famed maison in 1976 to launch Marina B. The granddaughter of Sotirio Bulgari, Marina had an innate sense of design, as well as boundless energy and enthusiasm, all of which enabled her to forge a new path and find her true calling. Marina channeled her creativity into designing exceptional jewellery; unique, bold and timeless. She developed her own style, rooted in the Bulgari tradition, yet distinctive and highly recognisable.

Marina opened her first showroom in Geneva in 1978 and held exhibitions in Monte-Carlo, Gstaad and St. Moritz. She was an instant success and soon opened boutiques in Milan, Paris and New York. Her jewellery became a favourite of international jet set celebrities and royalty who helped make Marina B the must have jewellery for the world’smost fashionable women. She was also one of the first designers to create jewelleryfor women purchasing for themselves. Her signature designs, fine materials and exceptional craftsmanship appealed to a new generation of confident, stylish, successful women.

With over 25 years of experience, Guy Bedarida is a leading figure in the jewellery industry. He was the longtime head designer and creative director at John Hardy (1999 to 2015) and before that, worked at Van Cleef & Arpels, creating one of-a-kind pieces for celebrities and VIPs. He

began his career at Place Vendome, most notably designing for Boucheron. His passion for sparkling finery goes back further to a youth spent between Paris, Rome and Tuscany. “I was surrounded by many beautiful things growing up,’’ explains Bedarida, whose father was from Paris and mother from Florence. My father was a cultural attaché travelling from embassy to embassy. Because of his job, I was exposed to painters, writers, architects..... Jewellery was an especially big part of my childhood. My mother inherited pieces from her family and my father would gift her the most exquisite jewels. I was fascinated by gemstones and the beauty of these little pieces of art.”

It’s a rare occurrence to not be on our phone and anxiety kicks in as soon as your phone data or wifi drops out. This is where The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain’s fabulous products come into play. The well-known spa has introduced so many treatments designed to unwind a busy mind, escape the pace of everyday life and emerge feeling focused, with a sense of renewed positivity. If your complexion is still suffering from long flights and too much of the good life, a decent facial is another good way to get your skin back on track. This gorgeous spa offers super soothing and relaxing treatments. The spa has a serene setting and is large and luxurious. The décor consists of muted sand and beige tones, high ceilings and traditional Arabic archways that give off a peaceful ambience. I’ll be trying the Relaxation Massage which encourages deep relaxation and the art of being present in the moment.

I changed into a plush robe and comfy slippers, opting for half an hour in the facilities, as my therapist said that this will help to completely unwind before the massage and assist in sweating out some of the toxins in the body.

A gorgeous treatment room awaited and we started with the massage. When asked how I was currently feeling, both emotionally and physically, I talk through areas that need special attention during my consultation process. This massage isn’t designed to be super strong like a deep tissue but more like an invigorating yet tranquil treatment. It’s a holistic and clarifying experience that works on the concept of mindfulness, focusing on both mind and body to help you reduce stress and ‘be more in the present’.

The metamorphic zones on the feet are then massaged to help rebalance and ground you, before a soothing, deeply therapeutic massage is continued up through the body. I leave feeling relaxed but energised. This is a truly soothing massage perfect for anyone who is feeling stressed or tense. There is also an Ultimate Radiance and Renewal Facial that aims to rejuvenate your skin with naturally advanced formulas to cleanse, hydrate and calm your complexion and busy mind. The facial uses similar techniques as the massage with lifting strokes and warmed poultices to sculpt and tone the facial contours whilst nourishing the skin with rose quartz crystal and a re-energising scalp massage using rose quartz crystals.

I was suitably impressed with the range of treatments on offer and would highly recommend them to anyone in need of some serious downtime. The Ritz-Carlton Spa offers a range of different products such as ESPA and Natura Bisse to allow for a truly bespoke experience. The amenities are also wonderful, with a private beach and a plunge pool, both perfect for pre or post treatment chilling out. You’ll leave feeling like you’re floating on air.

The one-off event brought a true taste of Beverly Hills to Manama, and offered guests a unique opportunity to sample specially crafted tasting menus from the kitchen of one of the world’s most glamorous restaurants and Ohlala were fortunate enough to join Chef Tetsu Yahagi and Chef Brian Becher whilst they explored the delicious local products of the region for their exclusive Spago Pop Up menu.

Spago is renowned as one of Los Angeles’ hippest places to see and be seen, with celebrity guests flocking to enjoy its inventive, market-driven menus, buzzing atmosphere and exceptional service. The two-day pop-up event at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay transformed the Hotel’s CUT by Wolfgang Puck steakhouse into a faithful representation of this iconic eatery from Thursday, November 8 to Friday, November 9, 2018. Each and every detail of the Spago experience was authentically recreated, from the cocktail list to the staff uniforms and – most excitingly – the two Michelin-starred cuisine by Chef Tetsu Yahagi, who had flown in from the

States cooked up a storm in the kitchen alongside Brian Becher, Executive Chef, Wolfgang Puck restaurants at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.

The pop-up served Puck’s signature creative California fare, paired with a complimentary matured grape list. Diners were furthermore invited to embark on a nine-course culinary journey encompassing handmade pastas, fresh seafood, all-natural meats, and an array of tempting desserts. Highlights included goat ricotta gnocchi, prepared using freshly made goat ricotta, medjool dates, toasted pistachio and wild field mushrooms; beluga caviar served with market cauliflower hummus, black lemon blini and lamb belly macaron; and steamed wild black sea bass with beet-ginger ponzu, edamame and wasabi tobiko. These were just a few of the mouthwatering dishes guests experienced as part of the extensive tasting menu.

Spago Chef Tetsu Yahagi said: “I am very excited to cook in Bahrain because I will have a great opportunity to introduce our Spago Beverly Hills cooking style to guests in Bahrain. The brunch and BBQ aficionados have heralded this Wednesday evening experience as a must, so, of course we sashayed our way over as soon as the premise opened for dinner - you’d think we’d never been fed! Also, you’d be well within your remit to become confused about which day of the week you were experiencing as this particular theme night unfolds; this Wednesday bonanza challenges the very best of Friday brunches within the city and beyond!

Baharat is aptly named as it is not only the generic word meaning spice in Arabic but is also a sumptuous blend of ingredients which adds depth, warmth and a unique peppery heat to a variety of cuisines from Egypt to Greece. This fusion of top class ingredients and flavours is exactly what Baharat represents and delivers with understated elegance amidst colourful glass lanterns and glistening fairy lights. The dining experience extends throughout the restaurant and terraced area. The interior is a blend of contemporary high end design and traditional sophistication with earthy tones, dark wooden finishes and marble floors.

Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the restaurant supervisor who then delivered us into the safe hands of one of the resident Sous Chefs for an informative and mouth-watering tour of the stations both inside and out. The majority of the expertly crafted baked goods and desserts were housed inside the restaurant. A selection of simmering soups provided a fabulous ‘amuse bouche‘. It highlights the fact that although the piece de resistance is undoubtedly the seared meats and seafood, Baharat is also able to deliver a la carte choices and quality amidst a buffet style setting. For those craving something lighter the salad bar was generous enough to be considered a meal in itself and the crisp, zesty selection was also the perfect accompaniment providing a fresh contrast to many of the BBQ dishes.

As we ventured outside I was heartened to see that we would not necessarily be saving the best until last. The platters of side dishes were varied in order to provide the perfect accompaniment to the freshly prepared, grilled meats. Chefs prepare the delicately spiced and seasoned dishes in the open kitchen and sear everything to perfection on the open grills. The on -site tandoor oven bakes up a storm, infusing its produce with a smoky authenticity which cannot be replicated in any other way. Once again it elevates this evening

Asking which of the BBQ staples stood out for us is a little like asking a parent to choose their favourite child. If pushed, then the juicy tenderloin steak and the BBQ ribs in a show stopping sauce were complemented by the sweet potato and marshmallow mash which is best described as a ‘guilty pleasure’ and are an absolute must! A particular highlight for my companion was situated on the terrace where a converted car had been employed as a grilling station, ‘hillbilly’ style! Lamb Chops are notoriously difficult to cook well. It’s being able to retain the flavour of the lamb whilst also keeping them moist and tender which takes real skill. Naturally Baharat’s were a phenomenal triumph. The inclusion of Wagyu steaks on the menu recently is beyond the icing on the cake or the cherry on top . It is pure extravagance and illustrates the commitment to diners and guests to provide them with the very best of the best.

The copper skillets which are used to present the freshly prepared meats, fish and seafood create a convivial approach towards the dining experience for guests who are, perhaps , wishing to share their choices with their companions. Every element seems to elevate it away from the typical, standard barbeque experience.

You will marvel at the sumptuous dessert fountain with cascading waves of glossy chocolate which showcase morsels, either healthy or naughty depending upon the preference of the diners. Delicious, delicately crafted pastries in every colour of the spectrum, ranging from perfectly geometric mousse topped tarts to glass- like glazed bombes and unctuous cheesecakes were presented alongside decadent fruit platters. The mousses were perfectly balanced and just indulgent enough to end such a varied, rich and tantalisingly tasty culinary cook out. The valet parking was ideally situated to allow me to roll into my car with a full stomach and an even heavier heart that my experience has came to an end… until next week!

From the moment the Portofino came into our view we had to agree that it was love at first sight. The master designers of this Ferrari have produced an aggressively styled vehicle with a two-box fastback configuration. This is truly unique for a coupé-convertible with a retractable hard top. Despite its domineering presence, the sleekness of its silhouette seems effortless and ensures the sporty character of this exceptional car is highlighted, along with its elegance and dynamism. The seamless interplay of concave and convex surfaces leads the eyes smoothly over every line and curve of the body revealing the shape necessary for maximum aerodynamic

The interior of the Portofino exudes a stylish compactness, boasting the very finest of materials along with handcrafted finishes that accentuate the class of this vehicle. The cabin has been carefully designed and developed to increase functionality and performance in order for this car to be practical for everyday use. A great feature is the 8-way adjustable electric and heated seats that ensure a permanently comfortable experience. The Portofino’s Human-MachineInterface (HMF) includes an instrument panel and dual TFT displays. This sophisticated infotainment system can be operated via the 10.25” touchscreen located at the centre of the dash which we found first-time user friendly. We were informed that the luggage compartment can hold three decent sized cabin trolleys with the roof up and two when it is down, adding to the everyday practicality of the vehicle.

The perfect weather allowed for us to fold the hardtop back, a precise movement that took only 14 seconds from start to finish. Upon engaging the ignition, the vibrations of the Portofino’s V8 engine surged through our bodies, promising us a performance we would not soon forget. A gentle press on the accelerator and we were already well on our way. Whenever an increase in pedal pressure was applied we could feel our bodies being pinned against our seats whilst childlike smiles spread across our faces. Believe us when we say that with 441kW of power and 760Nm of torque, this vehicle has more than enough muscle for two cars. This Ferrari has a top speed of 320km/h and can bullet from 0-100km/h in only 3.5 seconds! Although we could not push her to her limits, we were able to taste her impressive capabilities, along with plenty of handling, breaking and grip that ensured we were in full control at all times.

This experience taught us that there is little better than cruising around in a Ferrari Portofino on a beautiful day with the top down. The stares this car received only served to validate what we already knew. This car is a beautiful machine, one that is not only hugely impressive in its appearance and performance capabilities, but also practical enough in design to allow one to enjoy the experience on a daily basis.

MISS OHLALA TACKLES THE TOPIC OF AGEING AND THE PLOYS OF HOLIDAY MARKETING.

I’m starting to get very irritated (no, make that angry) about the beauty industry’s latest catchphrase: ageless beauty. This ironically old marketing campaign comes out in force, especially in the lead up to various holidays. Adverts either try to sell me some anti-aging cream to erase my wrinkles or tell me I need to wear an age-defying push-up bra. Well, I don’t need either. Why? I’m in love with my fine lines and wrinkles. They showcase character... Or so I tell myself. And as far as anything else goes, I don’t want them hoisted up to my chin like those of my former teen self. Nope. I’ll take ones that match the rest of my more senior body, thank you.

Let’s be honest. The word ageless isn’t about “not looking your age.” It’s not used to compliment a woman who, at 20 is mistaken for a 40-yearold. It’s about looking younger. So it’s ageist. Some older women often become an odd montage of separately aging body parts. Which, I guess,

is why no one has a clue as to their actual, chronological age. Promoting ageless beauty is also profoundly sexist. No one admires George Clooney for looking “ageless.” But when the media runs glamorous photos of Kris Jenner (age 62), the next paragraph criticises her for using Botox or undergoing plastic surgery. Yep, ageing women can’t win either way. Age-defying campaigns are a way to make women feel quite frankly rubbish about their outer appearance, even when we buy into the ageless beauty trap.

I’ve got no issue with any woman who dyes her hair, whitens her teeth, or goes under the knife. Women should have autonomy over their bodies. My style makes me happy, but it’s not right for anyone else. It’s an expression of who I am. What’s maddening is when celebrities are deemed as ‘brave’ for not conforming to social standards. It’s a not-sosubtle criticism of anyone who happens to choose a different beauty regimen. The fashion industry relies on women buying into unobtainable and aspirational beauty goals. The irony is that now I don’t give two hoots if anyone knows my age. There’s no need to lie. Let us look, feel, and be ourselves.
