Dear readers, We are here with the first issue of 2020... As the Turkish British Magazine, we are also embarking on a new era in 2020. We will continue to publish our magazine every two months, but from now on, each issue will be simultaneously published in English and Turkish. The English version will continue to be published in print, and the Turkish version will be available to read online, at the same time. In this new era, we are also bringing you another innovation... Using the advantages of technology, you will be able to read the magazine by scanning the QR code on its cover. You can access the .pdf versions of the magazine in both languages from your mobile phone, with the help of the QR code. As the Turkish British Magazine, we will be publishing 6 issues in 2020 and we are also preparing sector-specific supplements where we will focus on the various agenda of the world of business. We have already started working on our special supplement on “Turkish Tourism“, which will be available with our March-April issue.

Brexit remains on the agenda...

In the first issue of 2020, we have analysed the developments after the general election, which was the most important issue in UK’s agenda. The first order of business is, of course, Brexit…

In the snap general election in Britain last month, the Conservative Party won with an overwhelming majority and immediately began working. The Brexit vote also came out of Parliament very quickly. By 31 January 2020, Britain will have officially left the European Union. However, ongoing trade relationships will continue as before during the transition period, until 31 December 2020.

2020 will be an important year for both the Turkish and the British economies. With the Brexit process, the UK has become a target market with high potential for Turkey. This process offers important opportunities to Turkish businesspeople. A period of mutual cooperation and investments begins in many sectors, from real estate to food, health to tourism, retail to textiles. As Turkish British, we pay close attention to this process.

Regarding this process, we are also aware that Turkish businesspeople are keeping a close eye on the Ankara Agreement... Applications for the Ankara Agreement, which is of great importance to Turkish businesspeople, will continue until 31 December 2020. Meanwhile, objections to the changes in the application terms for the Ankara Agreement in 2018 and their retrospective implementation are still ongoing, and the legal process is pending before the court. The case initiated by those AA visaholders who were adversely affected by the changes, will be assessed by the Court of Appeal and the hearing will take place on March 26, 2020. We will be following the details.

The details of the announcement that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife Duchess Meghan Markle are stepping back from their royal duties, which had a bombshell effect on the global agenda, are also included among this issue’s highlights.

An aspiration 60 years in the making, the first “Fully Domestically Produced Car” in Turkey was introduced last month. While some people really liked it, others criticized it. We present you our review in this issue, without any comments, leaving you to praise or critique. As the global transition to electric cars is gaining speed, the electric car planned to be produced in Turkey has noteworthy characteristics with its technological features and design.

ACTUAL in the United Kingdom on December 12, 2019, tThe first job of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the founder of the new government, was to put Brexit to vote. The government determined that its first priority was to exit the European Union on January 31 and this process was completed quickly. After the British Parliament ratified the treaty, which regulates put forth the conditions for leaving the EU (Brexit) on January 9, the bill became lawful an Act and entered into force with the approval royal assent of Queen Elizabeth II. The European Parliament approved the Brexit agreement, which regulated Britain’s conditions for leaving the European Union (EU), in a vote on January 29th. The parliament, which met in Brussels, Belgium’s capital, accepted the agreement with 621 votes against 49. Thus, the UK officially left the European Union, of which it hads been a member for 47 years, on 31 January. In the next coming period, it is aimed the aim will be to sign a new trade agreement with the EU until the end of 2020.

How did the process work?

In the UK, historic results came from the polls of the early general election, which had been overshadowed by the Brexit debates. In the snap general election held on December 12th, the Conservative Party won 43.6 percent of the vote, and gained sole mandate with 365 MPs. The main opposition Labour Party lost 59 seats and suffered one of the heaviest defeats in its history.

Johnson, who strengthened his hand against the Remainers with his victory, brought the bill to Parliament right after the election, and, with a vote on 20 December, the Parliament decided for Brexit to take place on 31 January 2020.

Three-stage approval to the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Draft The Brexit bill, passed by in the first stage vote in the House of Commons on 20 December, was approved in the final voting on 9 January after being held open to amendments in the House of Commons for a while, and sent to the House of Lords.

The House of Lords had asked for amendments in the five articles of the Brexit bill in their meetings since January 20. The draft agreement, which is officially called the EU (Withdrawal Agreement) and which regulates the Brexit conditions, which that allowed UK to leave the EU with an agreement on January 31, was put into enacted after the approval of the Queen Elizabeth II after passing through the House of Lords. With the approval of the EU Parliament on January 29, the Brexit agreement was accepted.

December 31, 2020, the end of the transition process If negotiations on Brexit or the deals go according to the set timetable, the full separation will be on 31 December 2020 when the EU will end its association with the United Kingdom, a 47-year member of the European Union.

If no trade deals are agreed and approved by the end of the year, the UK will face export tariffs on trade with the EU.

What is the expected schedule for the country?

In the meantime, existing transactions will continue as they are.

The negotiations will focus on everything from trade to fishing, aviation, medicine and security.

If no result is achieved by July 1, the United Kingdom will be able to ask the EU for a one-off extension.

The EU wants the deadline extended until 2022, arguing that it is impossible to reach an agreement on all of these issues in less than a year. However, the Government does not want the transition period to be extended in any way and insists the negotiations to be completed by the end of 2020. If no agreement is reached, trade relations between the two sides will be handled according to World Trade Organization rules.

During the transition, the UK will continue to adhere to EU rules.

How will the Ankara Agreement be affected?

The Ankara Agreement visa, which enables Turkish entrepreneurs with a permit to work and live in the United Kingdom, will also come to an end with Brexit. The Ankara Agreement is a right, which at the time had been based on an agreement with the customs union, in 1963. After long legal struggles, Turkish citizens who applied through the Ankara Agreement have obtained this right and settled in the UK by establishing a company in the UK or as Turkish workers. However, the UK has no obligation to continue the Ankara Agreement after leaving the European Union.

Unless there is an unforeseen change, those applications made by 31 December 2020, the date of Brexit, and any rights acquired, will not be affected. Those who have obtained the Ankara Agreement, officially known as the ECAA (Europan Communities Association Agreement) Turkish businessperson visa, will continue to move forward in the legal process through to naturalization, provided they fulfill the required conditions.

No new visa applications will be received under the Ankara Agreement from 31 December 2020, when the relationship with the EU will officially end. Instead, a new category of visa which is devised for investors and entrepreneurs, is expected to replace it.

he United Kingdom entered 2020 with news that surprised both the royal family and the whole world. The Prince and Princess have resigned from their duties... In early January, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife, Duchess Meghan, announced that they are stepping down from their senior roles in the royal family and would work to be financially independent.

The Sun used the term “Megxit” in its headline, as a play on the words referring to Brexit, Britain’s process of leaving the European Union, which has been occupying the primary place in the British press agenda for a long time.

New decision in the new year The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said in a statement: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. While the couple will be living between England and North America, they stated that they will continue to honor their duties to the Queen, the Commonwealth and their patronages. Harry and Meghan also said they plan to establish a charity. “Especially with your encouragement over the last few years, we felt ready to make this arrangement,” the couple said in a message to their Instagram followers, and said they would continue to announce future developments. It has long been felt that there was a rift between the couple and the royal family.

The couple had gone to Canada with their son Archie, born in May, taking six weeks off their royal duties during the Christmas period. After returning to the UK, Harry and Meghan visited the High Office of Canada in London and thanked them for their hospitality. Meghan, who has starred in films and television series in the past, had lived in Toronto, Canada, while starring in Suits, the US TV series.

Harry criticised for making an emotional decision Dickie Arbiter, the former press secretary of Buckingham Palace, commented that such a decision showed that Harry was acting emotionally. Arbiter said the news in the British press about the couple, their children and the problems they had, also played a role in this decision. Prince Harry had strong reactions to the British media’s harassment of his wife and likened the media’s attitude to that shown to his mother, Princess Diana.

BCCT Chairman Chris Gaunt Awarded OBE Christopher William James Gaunt, Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Turkey (BCCT), was awarded an OBE in HM the Queen’s 2020 New Year’s Honours list. His appointment to the most Excellent Order of the British Empire was made in recognition of his services to international trade, investment and exporting.

The British Chamber of Commerce Turkey (BCCT) known for developing projects to enhance commercial relations and new business collaboration between UK and Turkey since its establishment over 133 years ago.

HM the Queen’s 2020 New Year’s Honours List recognised exporting entrepreneurs and industry leaders, as total UK exports stand at record high, rising to £675 billion in the year to October 2019.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss congratulated the recipients, saying: “I am proud to see that so many successful exporters and inspiring business leaders who have championed exports have been recognised for their work contributing to local and global prosperity. This illustrates the strength of our British business people, and I am delighted that the nation is championing their excellent work.”

Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, Chris Gaunt is a highly accomplished businessman with invaluable global experience across several business sectors. He held Senior Management/CEO positions in Eastern Europe, directed start-up operations in Central Asia, and was ultimately responsible for Coca-Cola Bottling operations in the South Caucasus, Central Asia and Middle East. In 2013, Chris Gaunt was elected Chairman of BCCT where he led a restructuring of the organisation and started a successful strategic cooperation with UK’s Department for International Trade.

Commenting on the award, Chris Gaunt said: “This award recognizes the contribution BCCT has made over the past seven years to the UK’s total export trade and more specifically our trade with Turkey. This, in no small measure, has been achieved by the support and contribution of our Board Members and the BCCT team, together with our Department for International Trade (DIT) colleagues based in the British Consulate in Istanbul and the Embassy in Ankara. I wish to thank all our stakeholders and BCCT members for their participation and commitment in our journey, and although this award is in my name, it also represents BCCT’s success, which I firmly believe will continue to build in 2020.”

Turkey continues to be a popular holiday destination for European tourists.When it comes to sea and a holiday in the sun, Turkey is the first country that comes to mind, especially with its tourist cities bordering the coasts of the Aegean and the Mediterranean. which attract foreign tourists.With its distinguished accommodation establishments, Antalya is the city that receives the largest number of tourists.

In Turkey, in the first 11 months of 2019 occupancy rates raised by 54.8 percent, an increase of 11.6 percent compared to last year.

With this increase, the number of people staying in tourist facilities reached 76.4 million in 2019. The number of overnight stays amounted to 202.2 million, an increase of 10.2 percent.

Antalya, the top touristic destination The Turkish provinces with maximum occupancy rates in Turkey were Antalya, Istanbul, Izmir and Mugla respectively.

While Antalya,leads Turkey’s tourism destinations with 70.1 percent in facility occupancy rates and 22.6 million visitors; Istanbul,Turkey’s capital of culture and tourism just hosts 13 million people. Istanbul was followed by Muğla with 4.5 million visitors and İzmir with 3.2 million visitors.

The number of visitors surpassed 48 million About 43 million of foreign tourists visited Turkey. Turkey has hosted a total of 48 million 46 thousand 732 visitors in 11 months.

With an increase of 14.31 percent compared to last year, 42 million 910 thousand 408 foreigners visited Turkey.

Countries with the highest number of visitors In 2019,Russian Federation led the way of countries with the most tourists coming to Turkey with 6 million 887 thousand tourists, followed by Germany with 4 million 835 thousand tourists .England ranked third with 2 million 506 thousand people. England was followed by Bulgaria and Iran.

According to The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) data, Turkey which ranks 6th country with the highest tourism income in Europe, was once more the 4th most popular tourist destination in Europe.

WeWALK: The Turkish innovation that draws worldwide attention: WeWALK

Kürşat Ceylan, a 33-year-old Turkish entrepreneur who develops intelligent walking stick that gives location and direction information, aims to change the lives of approximately 253 million visually impaired people in the world.

WeWALK is not an ordinary cane... Also called “smart cane”, the product warns visually impaired people by featuring obstacles at chest and head level. The cane used by connecting to a smartphone can also be integrated with mobile applications.

The smart cane has a touchpad for commanding, a microphone for giving voice commands, a compass and speakerphone when desired. WeWALK is constantly gaining new features with the addition of software updates.

Turkey unveils prototypes of 1st domestic car by realizing a long-waited dream

hink of a dream that turns into reality 60 years later. A dream for which a team of dedicated engineers worked hard in 1961. Alas, it was not realized but its story became very famous in Turkey with a movie shot in 2008. Producing a fully homegrown car was a long-waited dream for Turkey. After 60 years, Turkey now introduced a preview version of its firstto-be-domestic car models which will be also fully electric. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called in 2011 for investors to manufacture Turkey’s first indigenous car, following the appetite of the 1960s. Upon his call, in June 2018, five Turkish industry giants including Anadolu Group, BMC, Kok Group, Turkcell and Zorlu Holding and an umbrella organization, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) agreed to create Turkey’s Automobile Initiative Group (TOGG) in a bid to produce the country’s first domestic car. TOGG was on the scene unveiling the preview version of the C-SUV models of first fully homemade car project expected to create an investment of cost 22 billion Turkish lira ($3.7 billion) aiming to produce 175,000 electric cars annually.

The unveiling ceremony named “Innovation Journey Meeting” was held at the Gebze Information Technologies Valley located in the Marmara Region on December 27 2019. Erdogan and over 1,000 people were among the witnesses at the ceremony.

He is well-known with his design of Mercedes – Benz C Class models.

Karakas said, “We received support from Gunak in eliminating the 18 domestic and foreign design houses to 3, in the formation of the final design theme and in the selection process of Pininfarina, which made our theme 3-dimensional.

We registered our original design which we in September, 2019”.

He put ambitious targets as saying that TOGG will become a platform for the execution and delivery of new technology and new business ideas to the users during the transformation of the automobiles into a smart device, likening the automotive industry with the mobile phone industry.

In that sense, Karakas said, TOGG will be the first company to proudly represent Turkey in the global mobility world.

“We believe that this will also make a difference in the world,” he noted.

Karakas also stated that the brand name of the domestic car will be determined until the middle of 2020. It is important for the brand name to have both cultural and global implications also be original and strong, he said.

The automotive industry is champion of Turkey’s exports with $30.6 billion in 2019 and accounts 16.5% of country’s total exports, according to data of the Uludag Automotive Industry Exporters’ Association located in Bursa.

European Union (EU) led Turkish automotive industry exports with $23.4 billion and created 77% of Turkey’s total exports in 2019.

The exports of private cars stood at $11.4 billion, presenting almost 37% of the total automotive exports of the country.

Germany led among EU countries by importing cars and automotive industry equipment from Turkey worthy of $4.4 billion, the data showed. France is the second biggest importer of cars produced in Turkey with $3.4 billion in 2019, while Italy is the third with $2.9 billion.

The U.K. occupied the fourth space in the list with $2.45 billion automotive sector imports from Turkey last year.

Conventional private cars, minibus, midibus and bus are among those manufactured in Turkey while there is no production of a fully electric car model.

Global electric car industry at a glance

As part of the efforts to tackle climate change and keeping up with technological developments, electric vehicles have been spreading over the past 10 years.

The deployment of electric cars surpassed 5 million in 2018, marking an increase of 63% from the year before, a report by International Energy Agency (IEA) showed.

China had the biggest share of the stock with 2.3 million cars representing 45% of the total while Europe accounted for 24% and the United States 22% of it, the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2019 revealed.

In terms of European countries, Germany, France, Netherlands, Norway and the UK lead electric car stock with favorable government policies, incentives, and infrastructure investment.

In parallel with the growth of the electric car fleet, the number of charging points was estimated to be around 5.2 million by the end of 2018, which is up 44% from the previous year, according to IEA data.

Domestic car production a 60-year goal for Turkey Turkey’s efforts to produce an fully homegrown car model goes back to 1960s.

A team was assigned for producing the first domestic car called Devrim (Revolution) in 1961 by then-President Cemal Gursel. The team designed and manufactured 4 cars that were unveiled on October 29, 1961, during Republic Day ceremony of the country. Turkish Locomotive and Motor Industry then named Eskisehir Railway Factories was used as the manufacturing center of the 4 models.

However, one of the cars stopped due to insufficient gasoline while President Gursel was in it for a test drive. The stopping of the car due to lack of gasoline led the way for discussions about the success of the project and turned into a negative propaganda against Devrim. The government cancelled the project and Turkey maintained its desire for a fully homegrown car.

One of the Devrim cars remained in a working stated and it is currently kept in a specially constructed glazed garage in the garden of Turkish Locomotive and Engine Industry in Eskisehir, a Central Anatolian province. The historical story of Devrim was filmed by Turkish director Tolga Ornek in 2008 who defined it “as the story of a dream.”

Born in Uşak in 1968, Erdem Yurdanur completed his nursery, primary and secondary education in Uşak. In 1985, he entered the computer engineering department of Boğaziçi University which was his first choice and graduated in 1990. 1 month before graduation from school, he was recruited by and agreed to work for Arçelik, part of the Koç Group companies and Turkey’s largest private company at that time, and he started in the IT department of Arçelik after school was completed.

The general manager of Istanbul Science Park Yasin Erol evaluated the activities that have been done along with ICUBE programme up to date.

According to Yasin Erol; “ICUBE programme which was established in October 2018 serves as the International Accelerator Program, whose aim is to support entrepreneurs that mainly located within Istanbul provincial borders to entry into the UK market and strengthen them in overseas markets.

Having a diverse perspective on things enables you to offer a greater array of solutions to a wider audience. As suppliers we often come up with a solution that would work for us, but what if your clients’ world is different to yours? I tell a story in my book, Cultural Chemistry, of a culturally inappropriate solution, devised by an American PR guru who thought he could get some great publicity for his client by giving free ice-cream to the children’s hospital. The trouble was, while in America that might have been a nice good-news story, in China it’s considered very unhealthy to give cold food to sick children, so his client would not have got the kind of publicity he wanted at all.

Finally, you may be wanting to hire some staff in the UK – how do you motivate them to ‘go the extra mile’ for you?

There is a Persian proverb that states “If you are leading and nobody is following, you are just taking a walk” and this is exactly what is happening in offices all over the world. Cultural differences mean different expectations of how a boss behaves, how employees should be motivated and rewarded, how many hours must be spent at the office every day and even who pays for the cakes when it’s YOUR birthday! Going about things the ’wrong way’ will only be tolerated for so long, before tempers fray. Can you imagine turning up to work every day and recognising that your ‘local hires’ weren’t delivering the results you hoped for and didn’t seem particularly motivated by your personal management style either – even though it worked perfectly for you in Turkey?

As you can see, there are many ways in which cultural differences can cause your UK sales agenda to go off the rails, but equally many ways in which developing your cultural intelligence and taking some time to learn about British culture will help to fast track your success here. It’s not unlike starting to play a new sport; you may already be fit and have great ball skills, but if you try to play football using the rules of tennis, you won’t be in the game for very long.

It is about Signal versus Noise What goes on in the brain when we ignore or pay attention to a message?

Your brain does the heavy lifting and automatically zeros in on the signal you want to focus. (Detail for the curious: In this context the “you” is the Prefrontal cortex, and the “brain” is well, the rest of the brain, mainly the areas that do audio processing: thalamus and the temporal lobes.)

Basically, you give the brain a description of what you want it to focus on, and it does the rest: Pay attention to signals that fit the description; ignore those that don’t.

This weekend, I watched the Netflix Vox Special “Explained” on music (this one). It turns out, humans are like no other animal when it comes to understanding music. This makes sense as we have the biggest brains relative to our body size - and hearing is more about the brain (same with vision) than the ears.

Understanding music is not one single thing. It is a combination of understanding rhythm, pitch, timbre, texture, volume and form simultaneously.

Some birds are great at understanding rhythm, some bonobos are great at understanding pitch but humans are the ones who got it all. So “getting music” is an active and cognitively intense process for the brain. Distilled to its very essence, what brain does is; differentiate the signal from the noise.

Imagine you are sitting at a cafe sipping your almond milk latte or that you are at your favourite co-working space, hearing the noise of the people discussing the best e-mail marketing growth hack

When it comes to your inbox (your mailbox, linkedin messages, whatsapp, messenger etc.), the situation is almost exactly the same. There are more messages than you could ever read through paying 100% attention, let alone answer.

So what do you do? You compromise. You skim through and ignore…

We naturally choose to pay more attention to messages that are important to us, for the cost of ignoring the rest that don’t seem as promising.

But how does this exactly happen?

It is just like deciding to hear or ignore the music: We give our brain a vague and fuzzy description of the types of messages we would potentially be interested in and let it do what it does best. Focus on the signals. Recognise the patterns. Ignore the noise.

Should I answer?

Most likely, yes.

4Message from a good friend? Yes. 4Message from a lucrative client? Yes. 4Message from a someone offering SEO service?

Most likely, no.

Most likely, no and so on…

Here is the critical bit.

In most cases, the brain works in autopilot to find the matching patterns, ignoring the rest. It wakes you only when you need to make a decision.

The brain seeks a signal - a pattern. So that signal is really important and worth consciously thinking about. It is very much like a brief you give to a marketing or recruitment agency. Give the wrong one, and you got to a very bad start.

Different People Looking for Different Things There are different personas and what each will respond to or ignore will differ. Each gave different briefs to their brains on what to look for. Depending on if‌ 4 You are a recruiter looking for a talent for a specific role.

4 You are a hiring manager not actively looking to hire, but open to meeting with people that have a great potential.

4 You are an investor looking for the next promising investment.

4 You are a startup founder looking for key people to grow your business.

4 You are an entrepreneur looking for people to co-operate in a project.

4 You are a freelancer looking for the next gig.

4 You are a consultant looking for a new client.

4 You are a salesperson looking for a new lead.

All of these people will respond to or ignore different type of messages that hit their inbox. This automatic sifting process is a function of their own brief to their brain about what is worth their time.

If you look closely, you will notice something

strangely remarkable. While some people are looking for something really specific, others are looking for something that is harder to specify.

How does this difference play out?

Those Who Ignore The Most, Aren’t The Busiest.

Who then, ignores the most messages? Those who think they have a very clear idea of what they are looking for.

Think back to your own experience, does this make sense? It aligns well with mine. For example, a recruiter or a VC will most likely not read or reply, if the message does not signal it is a great candidate for hiring or investing. On the other hand, an entrepreneur is more likely to read and reply a message that comes from someone with an interesting background or expertise even though the direct benefit might not be so apparent.

You might be a recruiter who is ignoring someone who can recommend the best candidate for the role because their profile does not exactly fit your idea of the ideal profile.

You might be a founder ignoring any service proposal that comes your way, but might actually be missing out on a solution that can help your business.

Conclusion(s) 4Key conclusion #1 Ignoring a message is a function of how precise people think what they are looking for is (rather than just a result of how busy they are).

4Key conclusion #2 When you think you know what is it that you are exactly looking for, you may miss out on what you might need the most. Thinking "I know exactly what I am looking for" is the same as "I know everything I need to know".

The reality is, we don't. Especially in bigger cities with more diverse cultural backgrounds, it is hard to tell who knows what-or how good they are.

4Key conclusion #3 It is wise to be very careful of the brief that you feed to your brain on what you should pay attention to and what you should ignore. If the net you are casting is too narrow, you might be ignoring some messages that you'll regret. The wider the net you

cast is, the more chance you have to actually meet more interesting people. The downside is that it is less automatic and more cognitively tasking.

4Key conclusion #4 Challenge yourself to change the clues you look at: Focus more on the why and less on the who and what.

Especially when we receive a coldmessage we instinctively look at how personal the message is, who is sending it and what it's about. It is only natural. We ask ourselves, Am I part of a huge lead generation campaign, or is there an actual person writing a message to me?

And the triggers we pay attention to serve us well. If that person sending the message knows someone we do, or if the message is personal, that is good news. But are these actually the best filters to sort out real opportunities from spam? I don't think so.

This is a problem: We look at who sent the message and what they are talking about more than the why. Our pattern recognising brain can only do so much, without involving higher brain functions involved with decision making.

This might be the solution: Try asking Why is this person sending this message? more often to get to the heart of intent. Use your decision making capacities more rather than automatic filtering. Cooperation and collaboration are at the core of the creative spirit. When you establish intent, it is easier to sniff out the givers from the takers.

It might take more time and energy but do try to cast a wider net. Accept that, just as you don't know everything, you don't know exactly who you should ignore. Love the fuzzy and uncertain nature of these messages you receive, because they are very human in every way.

A calming, relaxing, healing art: MARBLING (EBRU) For Marbling artist Özlem Yüksel, the art of Marbling is the best way to understand life, to capture calmness and find healing in this complex life. The patterns that are shaped with certain touches, but still find their own way, are like the life itself...

arbling artist Özlem Yüksel, who is becoming more and more passionate about the art of Marbling as she continues do it, now participates in exhibitions in London, and organises workshops for children and adults. She talks about Marbling, which isn’t very well known abroad, at every opportunity.

Belenart’s founder, Özlem Yüksel, takes her love of Marbling virtually everywhere she goes, as a volunteer ambassador. Yüksel is a University of Bogazici Computer Engineering graduate. who worked as a manager in companies such as Procter & Gamble, J&J and Panasonic, after completing her Masters degree in business administration. She moved to Italy, quitting her 14 years of professional career. Yüksel, who was interested in many branches of fine arts as hobbies, while in Italy, encountered the art of Marbling

in 2001. As her skills and mastery of the art of marbling increased, she began to participate in exhibitions. Since 2002, Yüksel had hundreds of uniquely created invitations, in preparation for the circumcision ceremony of her son, and the 20th anniversary of her marriage. During this period, Yüksel had a shift and Marbling has become more than a mere hobby and she began to participate in exhibitions. In 2016, she moved to Dubai and lived there for 1.5 years. Yüksel then moved to England, where she stayed the longest, due to her husband’s job. She says “The opportunities that London offers in many fields of art and culture make it possible to work on many different subjects comfortably”.

Marbling is an extraordinary free form Özlem Yüksel’s journey with the art of Marbling, which she is now a master of, continues. Expressing the view that art is an area where new doors are constantly opened and creativity brings change, Yüksel says “I can talk about reaching to a level of specific mastery in terms of techniques.

As for the works, every day takes me to a different level”.

Yüksel, who draws attention to the parallel of the art of Marbling, which she loves passionately, with life, continues to explain the similarities with her own unique descriptions: This freedom applies both to you and Marbling itself. While you express yourself in many colours, shapes and tools, each picture reacts to the tragacanth, temperature and paints that you prepare.

In a sense, you and all the ingredients of Marbling are shaping the actual work together. Since we act calmly with gentle movements, it is a calming, relaxing, healing art. When you do this with your sensations, it is possible to see the reflection of life in Marbling. The tragacanths and paints that you prepare also express your preparation for life, and your design plans in your mind. You are first faced with an empty water surface, just like life. You start with a design like the plans in your life. Your dream is realised by knowing yourself, your competences, your wishes. You shape it with a lot of different colours and patterns, using a lot of different tools. Unlike other painting arts, tragacanth and paints express their own reactions. So just like life, you need to choose the right material, and prepare well to realise your design, your dream. Sometimes the pattern spreads out more than you expect. You give it a different format with another touch. Isn’t life is just the same?

When things are different than you expect, it needs different answers. Your mistakes make you

wiser, more competent in dealing with problems.

The choice of paint and pattern determines the beauty of the picture, just like our choices in life.

Sometimes drops of paint fall into the surface of the water, like the things that happened to you in life. You shape it and make it part of the picture, just like we do in life. So when I think of Marbling, I think of Halil Cibran’s verse of “A drop of water has all the secrets of the oceans”.

You can see children’s interest after 10 minutes Yüksel holds workshops with those who want to learn Marbling and benefit from the beautiful things it offers. She sometimes introduces Marbling to children and young people in schools she receives invitations from. She even organises unusual and beautiful birthday parties, where children can use their creativity and enjoy themselves. Yüksel says “Marbling is very useful for children in order to express themselves, but at the same time it is an enjoyable and entertainwww.tbmag.co.uk 47

ing art for them” and continues to say: “I don’t limit myself to Marbling and continue painting and engage in other art forms as I am inclined towards painting and handicrafts. In fact, creativity doesn’t allow for limitations in your materials and techniques when you are engaged with art”.

Yüksel’s work in schools is a separate source of happiness. She is like a volunteer ambassador... Yüksel, who says that she lovingly shares her knowledge, continues to say: “I go to all the schools I am invited to. I very much enjoy watching their astonishment and feelings, as if they were doing magic, when I am teaching Marbling to children. I’m sure that the energy in that given moment, in that environment, is very useful for our bodies and minds. When I am teaching children, the time is never enough, especially for some children. Believe me, children’s ability, and interest, all become apparent in just five, ten minutes. Perhaps this intuition comes with age and experience”. Yüksel has held workshops with hundreds of children and teachers in many schools outside London, as well as in Istanbul, Bursa and Dubai.

The treasures of Troy, the inspiration for legends, at the British Museum…

The British Museum collected the Trojan treasures from the countries were they were located and opened the “Troy: Myth and Truth” exhibition. The exhibition opened on November 21, 2019 will remain open until March 8.

The “Trojan Collection”, consisting of 500 pieces of souvenirs about the legend and treasures of Troy, will be on sale at the British Museum Shop in London on November 21.

roy, the story of a big city, an irresistible dramatic and tragic story, drawn into a 10year war to kidnap the most beautiful woman in the world, came to life at the British Museum.

The most complete exhibition of Troy’s legend opened at the British Museum on November 21, 2019. The exhibition, which will remain open until March 8, includes 300 works from the Bronze Age to the present day.

The exhibition also tells the stories of Helen, Paris, Achilles and the wooden horse that caused the destruction of the city, and how it inspired artists throughout history.

The biggest war story in history Alexandra Villing, curator of the exhibition, where legends and real products of the city inspired Homer, İlyada and Odyssey.

Alexandra Villing said that the Trojan War is “one of the greatest stories ever told, an archetypal war for all wars”.

Stating that the legend has lived very vividly for three thousand years and inspired Roman, medieval and modern writers and artists, Villing said: “Because; it’s really a story that has it all: love and loss, courage and passion, violence and revenge, twists and turns, victory and tragedy. “

The 3000-year-old Legend of Troy The British Museum included the following statements in the promotional message of the exhibition: The legend of Troy has endured for more than 3,000 years.

The story of a great city, plunged into a 10year war over the abduction of the most beautiful woman in the world, is irresistibly dramatic and tragic. This allure has sent adventurers and archaeologists in quest of the lost city, which is now widely believed to have existed.

But what of the heroes and heartbroken, women and wanderers, who are said to have played a part in the Trojan War? Why have they inspired so many retellings, from Homer to Shakespeare to Hollywood? Get closer to these captivating characters as you explore the breathtaking art that brings them to life, from dramatic ancient sculptures and exquisite vase paintings to powerful contemporary works.

You can also examine the fascinating archaeological evidence that proves there was a real Troy, offering tantalising hints at the truth behind the mythical stories.

From Helen of Troy’s abduction to the deception of the Trojan Horse and the fall of the city, tread the line between myth and reality in this phenomenal new exhibition.

by Yunus Emre Institution- London and Turkish Consulate General in London.

The aim of the exhibition is to create the opportunity to bring together both professional and amateur Turkish artists to show solidarity and unity within the Turkish society living in the United Kingdom.

The works in the exhibition were determined by the selection committee among all the applications.

Memory Matters exhibition combined the materials with memory Artist Didem Ünlü’s solo exhibition‘Memory Matters’ met art lovers at the London.

idem Ünlü has previously exhibited her paintings in many countries including the UK and Turkey. In her latest works she utilises personal photos from her own old family albums, in combination with her mother’s textile notebooks and sewing patterns. These Works was displayed at the Fitzrovia Gallery in London. The artist re-materialises the memories of found items and recreates the moments by coloring and painting over the sewing patterns that she has dug out of her mother’s cupboards.

The Journey from ‘the Moment’ in a photograph to the present Didem Ünlü takes the art lovers through a journey of the juxtaposition of knowing and remembering with(in) past and present via her current works. Art historian Prof. Dr. Marcus Graf in his foreword on Ünlü’s current works underlines that

the artist is ‘creating a comment on history and its visual presentation’ and that Didem Ünlü’s works focus on memory in the interplay of personal and societal context. Graf goes on to say that “While (the artist) lived in London for over a decade, the photos from her family albums meant strong links to her past. These still standing reminiscences of her personal history were building bridges between the Now and the Then, as well as between London and Istanbul. Also, the photos represented a longing for home as well as the longing for connecting with the personal stories of her family’s history.”

The Aydın Gün Encouragement Award for 2019 goes to young violinist Elvin Hoxha Ganiyev Awarded every year since 2012 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) to promising young classical musicians, the Aydın Gün Encouragement Award of 20,000 TL is granted to the 22 year-old violinist Elvin Hoxha Ganiyev in its eighth edition.

fter singing for 9 years in many places in Istanbul, Melis Bilen, who has been living and performing in England for 1 year, made her first entry into the Turkish music market with her own songs. Melis Bilen, who released her first professional song in English last year, also did the lyrics and composition for the song “Killed 2”.. Melis Bilen plans to continue her music journey with Turkish songs. Melis Bilen, who published the song “Pamuk Kalplim”, which has his own lyrics and music, over the internet, decided to broadcast the song professionally from her own company, and Osman İşmen made the arrangement of the song.

stanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts - İKSV continues to support young classical musicians. 8th of The Aydın Gün Incentive Award given by İKSV goes to young violinist Elvin Hoxha Ganiyev in 2019. Elvin Hoxha Ganiyev will receive his award at the opening ceremony of the 48th Istanbul Music Festival.

Elvin Hoxha Ganiyev was born in 1997 into a family of esteemed musicians and started playing the violin when he was 5 years old. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Spain. Ganiyev is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at Hochschule für Musik Theater und Medien Hannover in Germany.

Ganiyev has always performed concerts included the Royal Albert Hall in London and received numerous awards and honours at prestigious international competitions. At the age of 13, Ganiyev performed as a soloist in the opening concert of the 38th Istanbul Music Festival with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Gürel Aykal.

The Aydın Gün Encouragement Award is granted to a young musician who’s studying or working in the classical music field every year. The selection committee is headed by İKSV General Director Görgün Taner, and consists of conductor Rengim Gökmen, opera director Yekta Kara, violinist Cihat Aşkın, Borusan Sanat General Manager Ahmet Erenli, and İKSV Deputy Director General Yeşim Gürer Oymak.

The clip of “Pamuk Kalplim” was shot by a British team of the production company Luma Film in England. Melis Bilen rode a white horse in the castle’s garden and made romantic images in the garden of the castle in the clip, which was taken at the 19th century Peckforton Castle in Cheshire and composed of images like fairy tales. Peckforton Castle, in which the films “Robin Hood” and “Sherlock Homes” are shot, is also present in the clip of “Pamuk Kalplim” in all its glory.

Melis Bilen graduated from Sabancı University Department of Industrial Engineering, took singing lessons for years and then developed her own technique and started giving singing lessons to her students. She also gave companies sound, breath and speech technical workshops during her career. Melis Bilen, who is also a Latin dancer in addition to her music studies, performed at many dance festivals.
