Let’s get up and go!
It’s springtime, Columbia! It’s time to move, stretch, jump, play, shed our winter layers, and welcome the warm Carolina sunshine. It’s time for the pastel pink of the cherry trees and the rich hues of azaleas to reach their peak bloom and for new pops of green to bring life to the trees and to the grass around us.
In the same way that the landscape blooms around our city, so do upcoming events, activities, and get togethers. We look forward to Columbia events like St. Pat’s in 5 Points, the Drink Pink Rosé festival, as well as the Devine in Bloom Fashion show. We attend the iconic spring horse races like the Carolina Cup in Camden and Steeplechase in Aiken.
There is something about the promise of spring that has us ready to Get Up and Go, and within the pages of this issue we hope that you will find inspiration, ideas, and places to add to your seasonal bucket list.
We encourage you find new ways this spring to explore our great city. Try a new local restaurant, shop for fresh seasonal ingredients at a local market, or try your hand at planting your own organic garden at home. Buy that outfit with your favorite spring colors and wear it to a festival or event you haven’t been to yet. Take time to breathe into yourself and into our city because there is no time like the present to get outside and explore.
As always, we share a heartfelt thank you to our small business community as they are our constant inspiration. They infuse life, excitement, and culture into our community, and it is an honor to work alongside them. Cheers to 2023 and to the start of a beautiful new season. Now let’s get up and go.

Bringing your story to life
With every branding and marketing strategy created and implemented at ByFarr Design House, the ultimate goal is to allow clients’ stories to shine. Rose Talbert Paints certainly has a remarkable story to tell thanks to a rich history of over 100 years in business. As Rose Talbert’s marketing team, ByFarr worked with the 2 nd and 3 rd generations of the family-owned company to give the brand a new look while also paying respect to their history. See for yourself how the local paint company’s story has been brought to life through exceptional design. Have a new logo or rebrand in mind? Call to schedule a complimentary consultation!
A fresh look for an old favorite
New colors and logo, same incredible product and service that Rose Talbert Paints has been providing for over 100 years.
Rose Talbert Paints has been family-owned and operated since the day W.H. Rose first opened the doors to the business on Daloz Drive in Columbia. In the century since then, as the company has grown and as the products have continued their stellar reputation, the main values that W.H. founded the business upon still remains: Offer outstanding paint products made right here in South Carolina alongside superior service. It's those values that separate Rose Talbert Paints apart from their national brand competitors!
Every gallon of their paint is produced at their production location in Cayce, and is utilized all around the Midlands and beyond. Their paints have been used in projects at the University of South Carolina, in local K12 schools, in murals in downtown Columbia, in homes throughout the state, in local small businesses, in churches, and more. Local painters know what brand of paint is superior, and it's because each can of paint produced has many hands involved in creating it. From beginning to end of the process, the paint is carefully monitored and tested to ensure that only the best leaves the production floor and ends up on the shelf at the store for you to purchase.
Walk into either of their storefront locations on Knox Abbot Drive in Cayce or Forest Drive in Columbia and find everything you need to get the job done. It doesn't matter if you're a contractor looking to bulk order paint for a big project you have coming up or if you're a homeowner looking to give a room in your house a makeover—The paint experts at Rose Talbert Paints will not only answer any questions you've got about what paint you might need, but they'll supply you with the best paint to get the job done right the first time.
Shop small and support local as you tackle your home DIY projects this spring—Rose Talbert Paints is the place to go!
From food festivals to holiday celebrations and all kinds of gamedays in between, there’s nothing short of a full line up of events to be found in the heart of SC. Thanks to our region’s temperate climate and sunny days, Columbia is a year-round destination for events where you’ll find something happening most weekends. Keep reading and mark your calendars as we break down some our community’s must-attend events throughout the year!
SPRING SUMMER
For over 30 years, a special part of the city gets more green than usual for St. Pat’s in Five Points, one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day festivals in the Southeast. Featuring a daylong lineup of bands, a fun run, and a wee bit o’ parade in the morning, this festival has a little something for everyone.
Keep your kilts and bagpipes handy and head to the weekend-long celebration of Celtic culture and heritage, The Tartan Day South Festival. Showcasing the traditions of Ireland, Scotland and England through music, athletics and dancing, this will be the perfect place to honor your lineage and learn more about history. Sip on a Guinness while watching classic sheepdog herding or place your bets on sword fights.
While it’s typical of The Vista to be buzzing, it comes alive with extra vibrancy during Artista Vista each spring when the galleries keep their doors open later and public art spills out into the streets to bring culture in reach for everyone. You might be surprised to hear it, but crawfish are kind of a big deal around here – at least during the Rosewood Crawfish Festival. With 10,000 pounds of crawfish and a healthy dose of other Cajun and Southern food favorites, plus a day full of live music, this is a party your crew won’t want to miss.
While we’re not a coastal town, when it comes to shrimp and grits, there are lots to be had in Columbia SC. You can find out who has the best and enjoy live music at the Columbia Shrimp and Grits Fest.
Locals know that no matter what day of the week the Fourth of July falls on, the Lexington County Peach Festival will happen, rain or shine. This long-running celebration of America and one of South Carolina’s top crops brings people of all ages out for a parade, tasty peach treats galore and a spectacular fireworks show to top it off.
Speaking of fireworks, follow the locals to Lake Murray for the annual Lake Murray Fireworks Celebration on July 4th. Catch the parade of boats embellished with their patriotism during the day, then the dazzling displays light up the night sky and are reflected in the water’s rippling surface, making this show one to plan for.
The Main Street Latin Festival spices up the city with an authentic street fair that celebrates the huge impact that Latinx culture has on South Carolina. From food and music to dancing and art, attendees can get a real taste of the variety, vim and vigor of this culture.
St. Pat's in Five Points South Carolina State FairFALL WINTER
Experience Jubilee: Festival of Black History & Culture with Historic Columbia, which brings together artisans, dancers, storytellers, and musicians to celebrate the deeply interwoven ties of African American history in our city.
The city brightens up and paints the town rainbow for the weekend of the Famously Hot SC Pride Festival. It’s an epicenter for entertainment with dynamite performers – think Lil’ Kim, Natasha Bedingfield and Jordin Sparks as past headliners. Combine that with a night parade and a positive, creative culture, and you’ve got a recipe for breaking attendance records every year.
Considered by many to be a signature Columbia music festival, Jam Room Music Festival includes food trucks, craft beer and live music featuring genres from bluegrass to heavy metal and everything in between. It all comes together as a free street festival on Main Street.
Fried Oreos, rides, carnival games and bright, Insta-worthy photos mean it’s time for the South Carolina State Fair. This Columbia tradition is a statewide celebration of family fun and getting back to being a kid.
When there’s a chill in the air, take in the Holiday Lights on the River display at Saluda Shoals Park, starting in November and running through December. Stay in the warmth of your car with hot chocolate and snacks as you wind through the sparkling displays.
‘Twas the Lights Before Christmas and all through the zoo, the animals were stirring and people were, too. Each holiday season, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden puts on a magical display of twinkling lights of every color, and in every shape of animal, that captures your imagination and instantly gets you in the holiday spirit.
The Vista starts to shimmer a little extra during Vista Lights—a kickoff to the holiday season that highlights the best of The Vista’s art galleries and retail shops, as well as brings merriment in the form of live performances and great bites and sips.
You get all of this, plus the sporting events, concerts, shows and more that happen throughout the year as well. When you look, you’ll find there are more things to do than there are hours to do them right here in the heart of SC. Electric events like these are the reason why millions of visitors come through the region every year. And with each visitor who chooses Columbia, our economy grows and our community thrives. Learn more about our events and new ways to experience Columbia SC at ExperienceColumbiaSC.com

Authentic Angela Yong Sellers
For Angela Yong Sellers, owner and operator of Fit Columbia in Five Points, opening up a fitness studio was about more than building a gym, but creating an experience; a personal one. She was dedicated to creating a welcoming space where everyone was invited and where all felt included. Twelve years later, Fit Columbia is just that, and Angela and her team continue to inspire everyone around them to get up and move, and to have fun doing it.
As Angela puts it, Fit Columbia is a place where a vibe attracts a tribe. A place
for people of all ages and backgrounds to come for everything from personal training to stretch therapy to goat yoga. Fit Columbia focuses not only on strength training, mobility, and body work, but on ensuring everyone leaves feeling confident and cared for as well.
Angela encourages the mind set of “try something new” and “get up and go,” especially when spending quality time with others. Movement, she believes, is always more enjoyable when done with someone else.
“I think that moving, and including someone else, not only makes it a more memorable experience, but an opportunity to play longer,” said Angela. “It’s been proven over and over again... if you’re running on a track and someone comes running alongside you, you’re going to immediately start running faster or you run longer.”
She knows that in our town there are an abundance of places to get moving with a friend. Signing up for a 5k, even if you walk, is a great way to try something new, or try kayaking on one of our local
rivers. There’s always a way to take a hang out and make it more physical.
“I think that getting friends and family together and doing things like going to the zoo where you’ll get lots of walking in, to an ice rink out in Irmo for skating, or to Congaree National park for hiking, is great,” Angela said. “Anywhere you can go and be physically active with friends and family... that’s what I’m hoping for in 2023, more of that for our community.”
Angela is also a champion of our city, serving as an Experience Columbia ambassador, a member of the Midlands SC chapter of 100 Women Who Care, and most recently, a Kudzu Queen. With a great appreciation and knowledge of the area, the food scene, and the local activities, Angela can provide her clients the insight on how to embrace Columbia while being active
and supporting local businesses. Fit Columbia’s location in Five Points offers wonderful opportunities to connect with other local business owners creating lasting relationships and deepening the bond that our community and business owners hold together.
The story at Fit Columbia is one of being your most authentic self. No judgment, no comparison. Just an appreciation that you are taking the time to be yourself. Angela is not only sharing that message to her clients in the gym, but she is also encouraging people to embrace that mindset for every part of life. You matter and you are important. Angela wants to be a constant reminder of that everywhere she goes from Fit Columbia to social media, and all the places along the way.

TO LEARN MORE, VISIT CLASSICALLYCAROLINA.COMEach year, Fig Columbia partners with an organization that makes our surrounding community a better place to live. For 2023 we are proud to support and share the mission of Sistercare, a non-profit based in the Midlands that provides services and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and their children in Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, and Richland counties.
Their philosophy is to empower survivors of domestic violence and their children to live free of intimate partner violence; become educated about domestic violence; be able to make informed decisions; take responsibility for themselves and their children; and achieve self-sufficiency. Sistercare works closely with survivors and their children to achieve these goals by providing emergency shelter, traumainformed services, and communitybased programs so they can live a life free from fear.
“Our emergency shelters are continuously at or near capacity; serving domestic violence survivors remains a huge need in our community,” said Leah Wicevic, Director of Administration and Operations at Sistercare. “We have a confidential 24/7 crisis line and anyone in need can call 803.765.9428 when shelter or other services are needed. We have 49 beds total between the two emergency shelter locations, and everything is arranged so it is conducive for families, as many of the survivors that we serve are fleeing abuse with their children.”
While all survivors are welcomed into the emergency shelters that Sistercare operates, some individuals may only need community-based services as they transition to an independent, violencefree life. “Sistercare has two arms,” said Leah. “One is the emergency shelter arm that people often associate with Sistercare. The other arm is comprised of community-based
services that include safety planning, counseling, rural services, housing, hospital accompaniment services, court advocacy, legal representation, and more to help survivors have the necessary support and tools to live safely and free from abuse.”
In 2022, Sistercare served over 3,500 domestic violence survivors and their children, and South Carolina remains one of the top states for the rate of women murdered by men. It is more important than ever for survivors to know they are not alone and that Sistercare can help, free of charge.
“Domestic violence is a community issue,” said Leah. “It is collectively our responsibility to help and empower survivors in our neighborhoods, in our places of worship, in our offices, and in our social circles. One in four women and one in seven men have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime, so it is likely that a co-worker, a member of your book club, the friend at the end of the street, or a family member has been abused.”
“It is also collectively our responsibility to help prevent the intergenerational cycle of violence by educating one another, being informed of domestic violence issues in the community, understanding how domestic violence impacts our economy, and teaching our youth about healthy relationships. Together we can make a difference in changing and possibly saving lives.”
