SEMFA: Music Festival 2023
South Eastman Filipino Association (SEMFA) has successfully produced the first-ever Music Festival in Steinbach, Manitoba. It was a great way to showcase all the local talents in Steinbach. This program was already proposed to the council last 2022, but all officers were uncomfortable pushing it through because they still needed to learn how much people would love this event and needed more funding. After the Holiday Party last year, SEMFA officers have seen the possibility and potential of having a music festival in Steinbach. It was a difficult decision when proposing an event like this as a small non-profit organization. However, with the help of annual sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, families and friends, we knew everything was possible.
It was an exciting feeling to see all the talents that our little community has. This Music Festival was not only about Rock and Roll bands, but we had different genres such as Acoustic, Solo Piano, Slow Rock, Showband, Rock etc. We also had three local food vendors to sell their specialties like Tita A’s Kitchen with their famous Cajun Shrimp and Mussels Combo, Goto Republik with their famous Gotong Batangas, Arroz Caldo and finally, Dyna’s famous Ilocos Empanada, Royal bibingka and Cassava cake. These three vendors did a great job of bringing out our favourite foodies while witnessing the fantastic talents of the ten performers.
SEMFA's President Greg Carlos and his officers were very grateful to all those who supported this event, and we hope to have more events like this to empower our local talents and build a strong community in the Southeast region of Manitoba.

The highlight of the day was the highly anticipated Queen Bulilit and Reyna ng Festival Public Presentation, where enthusiastic supporters cheered on their favorite contestants. Winners and special awards will be announced on June 24 during the main event. Ultimate New Wave Evolution (& closely related styles part 36
Iview and hear music as a broad spectrum, an evolution of sounds and styles that are rooted in something more rustic and older. What has become New Wave, for instance, did not just sprout like mushrooms in the aftermath of the '70s phase of Punk, which itself was also only an extension of '60s Garage and Pub Rock.
Many journalists simply like to own the next scoop, even to the extent of hijacking something old and then selling it as new. When they began using the term New Wave, around 1977, to refer to the kind of music that had "the raw energy of Punk but the sophistication of Art Pop," they were actually rehashing a 10-year old narrative.
In 1967, the American songwriter/guitarist/instrumentalist
Sa Úgoy ng Músika
Reid King and lyricist/singer Thom Andriola had named their duo The New Wave and released their selftitled album of songs that decidingly had "the energy of Garage Rock, the complexity of Baroque/Classical, and the romantic finesse of late-'50s to early-'60s French film scores and soundtracks."
Thus, the claim that the birth of New Wave music was in the 1970s was inaccurate and unfair.
Now, in homage to and in recognition of the true progenitors of New Wave music, here is The New Wave's one-and-only album plus
some of its late-'60s contemporaries (also referred to as Sunshine Pop / Psychedelic Pop/Rock)--the sound and style of each had contributed to the original foundation and heart of the genre.

Unraveling People & Culture at Manitoba Startups
By Ron Cantiveros
It was an electrifying #TechThursday panel discussion that brought together four of the most dynamic women leading the charge in the tech startup scene. The event was masterfully orchestrated by the charismatic Jane Helbrecht from Uplift Engagement, who ensured the evening was as enlightening as it was entertaining.
The panel included:
Amanda Broos from Neo Financial, a beacon of innovation in the fintech sector.
Shona Grewar from Taiv, a trailblazer in the world of AI-driven advertising.
Kyla Wills-Lollback from Gryd, a pioneer in the realm of property technology.
Vanesa Cotlar, shaking up the insurance industry with PolicyMe.
The evening kicked off with a deep dive into the concept of
company culture. The panelists shared their wisdom on the importance of being deliberate about shaping culture, identifying and promoting desired behaviors, and the critical role of founders and senior management in setting the tone. It was a masterclass in leadership, with the panelists demonstrating how to lead not just with authority, but with authenticity and empathy.
The conversation then shifted to the evolving nature of work environments. The panelists shared their unique approaches, from PolicyMe's fully remote model to Neo Financial's traditional officecentric style, and Taiv/Gryd's hybrid approach. The standout was Gryd's innovative "Choose your own adventure" model, a nostalgic nod to the beloved book series, but with a modern twist.
The panelists emphasized the importance of balancing location and
schedule flexibility, prioritizing achievements over hours logged, fostering collaboration, and accommodating the diverse needs of in-person and remote team members. They highlighted how these strategies can help alleviate stress and prevent burnout, a timely lesson for organizations navigating the post-pandemic work landscape.
The insights shared by this expert panel would have been invaluable for any organization grappling with the challenges of the new normal. #TechThursday was more than just a panel discussion. It was a celebration of innovation, leadership, and the limitless potential of the tech industry. It was a reminder that the future of work is here, and it's more exciting than we could have ever imagined.

Winnipegger Shawn Maranan Invited To Winnipeg Sea Bears Training Camp Roster
by Ryan Reyes
Manitoba basketball enthusiasts may have noticed a few familiar names on the Winnipeg Sea Bears inaugural training camp roster. There were 6 locals listed, however, one, in particular, is well-known throughout Manitoba’s passionate Filipino basketball community; Shawn Maranan.
Shawn, a third-year guard with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s Basketball Team, is coming off of a stellar season. The Canada West All-Star helped lead the Wesmen to the National Championships last year. It was their first appearance in nearly 3 decades. Shawn is joined by Wesmen teammates Donald Stewart, Ryan Luke, alumnus Narcisse Ambanza and Coach Mike Raimbault.
Meanwhile, Shawn's father, Ruel Maranan, shared with the Filipino Journal his son's immense excitement and anticipation for the upcoming opportunity to play alongside professional basketball players.
“He is very excited. He told me that this will definitely be a good experience for him, and he is looking forward to playing with
As the head coach of the Winnipeg Blizzards Club Basketball for over a decade, Maranan noted Shawn's passion for the sport, which manifested as early as 15 months old. Notably, Shawn's participation in the Winnipeg Sea Bears tryouts,
where he was the sole Filipino attendee who successfully secured a spot, brought immense pride not only to their family but also to the entire Philippine Basketball community.

Onion prices poised to surge again, reaching P500-P700 per kilo
Farmers' group Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) has issued a warning about the soaring retail prices of onions in the Philippines. SINAG executive director Jayson Cainglet stated that the cost could reach as high as P500 to P700 per kilo due to an abrupt spike in prices. Cainglet called on the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) to inspect cold storage facilities and determine inventory levels. SINAG president Rosendo So added that stocks of white onions would be depleted by July, emphasizing the need for imported white onions to prevent a shortage. BPI spokesperson Diego Roxas confirmed the limited stock of white onions until mid-July and admitted that final figures for local onion production had yet to be determined. Both SINAG and the Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI)
urged the DA and BPI to allow calibrated importation of onions to address the potential shortage.
In response, a senior official of the DA, Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban, assured the public that there would be no repeat of

COVID-19 Hospital Admissions on the Rise
COVID-19 hospital admissions are on the rise across the Philippines, according to the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. The president of PHAPi, Dr. Jose Rene de Grano, reported that COVID-19 admissions in private hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR) and other parts of the country have increased by more than 20 percent in recent days. The uptick has also been observed in regions such as Calabarzon, Aklan, and Davao.
Dr. de Grano noted that many of
the admissions are coincidental, as patients sought consultation for other medical reasons but tested positive for the virus during screening. He emphasized that most cases are mild, advising patients to isolate at home, while those with comorbidities and severe symptoms should be closely monitored in hospitals. Despite the rising admissions, Dr. de Grano assured the public that hospitals are prepared to handle the situation and encouraged people to wear masks and get vaccinated to protect themselves.

Bringing in the laughs is the highlyanticipated on-screen comedic collaboration of Bossing Vic Sotto as Boss EZ and multitalented actress Maja Salvador as Mikaela. Boss EZ is a reluctant, socially awkward guy who finds himself suddenly in charge of a convenience store. Meanwhile, Mikaela is a funny and very "kikay" girl who is one of Boss EZ’s crazy Gen-Z crew in the store.
Following their successful teamup in their first-ever primetime series ‘Luv is: Caught in His Arms," Sparkle sweethearts Sofia Pablo and Allen Ansay are set to solidify their love team via GMA Public Affairs’ digital drama series ‘In My Dreams,’ which airs online beginning May 18.
The six-part narrative series follows the story of Sari (Sofia), a certified NBSB who feels she has no control over anything in her life. One day, she stumbles upon an article about lucid dreaming and attempts to achieve it until she finally does. In her dream, she meets a handsome young man named Jecoy (Allen). With her consistent lucid dreaming, the two reunite each night and eventually fall in love.
Will the romance she found in her dreams become a reality?
With the unique storyline, Sofia and Allen welcomed the chance for them to explore their roles.
"[It was] Really enjoyable kasi since kakaiba nga po 'yung kwento, nakapag-explore [ako] ng kakaibang acting style," shares Sofia.
“Mas na-realize ko po na may mga kailangan [at pwede] pa akong gawin kasi maganda 'yung twist ng kuwento,” says Allen.
Joining Team Jolly are fellow Sparkle artists Elijah Alejo, Cheska Fausto, Tanya Ramos, Juancho Trivino, and Sanya Lopez. Adding excitement to the romance-magic realism series are content creators Ashley Rivera, Christian Antolin, Berniecular, Alexis Vines, and Prince Adrian Dagdag.
'In My Dreams' is from the team behind the hit series, 'The Lost Recipe.'
Catch this latest digital series beginning May 18, from Tuesdays to Thursdays at 6 PM on GMA Public Affairs’ Facebook page and Youtube channel.
Joining them in making the viewers crack up every weekend are Jose Manalo as Spark, Sparkle Sweethearts Sofia Pablo and Allen Ansay as Kitty and Al, and Sparkle artists Riel Lomadilla as Bekbek, Anjay Anson as Andoy, Kimson Tan as Kokoy, Abed Green as Fred, and Bruce Roeland as Doe.
Boss EZ’s convenience store, "Open 24/7," was started by his brother through a bank loan. Unfortunately, his brother had an accident and is temporarily disabled. As the co-borrower, Boss EZ has no option but to take responsibility and deal with all the difficulties of managing his zany Gen-Z crew and quirky clients, or risk losing everything.
Despite all that, Boss EZ is motivated by his love for his brother, his employees, and his clients. He aims to be a rainbow in someone else's cloud. Although they may not be perfect, the convenience store is his home, and they are his family.
Under the helm of JR Reyes and M-Zet Productions, Open 24/7 airs beginning May 27, after Magpakailanman on GMA-7.
Viewers abroad can also catch the program via GMA Pinoy TV. For more stories about the Kapuso Network, visit www.GMANetwork. com.
Ruru Madrid thought of proposing to Bianca
in Paris
Kapuso actor Ruru Madrid still has jet lag as he faced PEP recently for an interview.
Ruru arrived from Europe last week for the finale taping of the GMA7 primetime series The Write One.
According to Ruru, he and his girlfriend Bianca Umali had a great time on their vacation in Europe. They shot the ending of The Write One in Paris, France, which was the perfect location for important scenes.
After the taping, they continued their vacation, and their visit to the Eiffel Tower was very memorable. They initially went during the day but wanted to witness the tower's illumination at night.
Impressed by the beauty of the Eiffel Tower, Ruru thought it would be a great place to propose.
"Actually, it crossed my mind. But I said everything has its perfect timing. Both Bianca and I are still young, and we have many priorities right now. We both work. We're very passionate when it comes to our craft. There's perfect timing for those things," Ruru expressed.
According to Ruru, he and Bianca have agreed to travel again. During their recent vacation, he witnessed how caring his girlfriend is.
"I saw how caring she is, how loving she is. Not just to me, but to everyone around her. That's the kind of person she is. It's like when her friends ask her, they call her 'Tita' because she's very nurturing. She's the one who cooks, cleans up after meals, everything. But of course, I
also want to help because it would be embarrassing for her. She also taught me how to take care of myself," Ruru said.
Their project, The Write One, is not yet finished, but Ruru already has two new teleseryes lined up, including Part 2 of his hit series, Lolong.
He also has upcoming films that will test his marketability as an actor with a paying audience.
Sarah Geronimo Opens Up About Alleged Rift with
G-Force Choreographer
Popular Royalty Sarah Geronimo recently addressed the rumors surrounding her alleged conflict with renowned G-Force choreographer Georcelle Dapat-Sy. Breaking her silence during an interview at a brand launch, Sarah expressed her feelings about missing Georcelle and the G-Force during her recent 20th-anniversary concert.
Sarah revealed, "They have been a significant part of my career. It would have been more magical if they were there." Reflecting on their absence, she added, "I wanted them to be there to celebrate my 20 years with me... I might have shed a tear."
Prior to Sarah's statement, Georcelle had praised the singer for her directing and performance skills in the concert. Speaking to ABS-CBN News, she stated, "It's
also like giving her creative freedom. We have worked together for sixteen years, almost like a love team." However, Georcelle acknowledged the challenges they faced in their "professional split" with Sarah.
"The bond we shared for sixteen years is undeniable. Am I hurting? Yes, more than hurting," Georcelle shared candidly. Despite the difficulties, her focus is on uplifting and guiding others to maintain a higher vibration, especially in the face of negativity on social media. She emphasized the need to respect the artistry of dancers and the decision she made to protect their craft and the dance industry.
For now, supporters of Sarah and Georcelle can hope that their shared history and mutual respect will pave the way for healing and continued success in their respective careers.

Mahílig Ka Bang
Mangolékta ng Pláka? (Filipino Record Collectors of Winnipeg Unite!)
Here in Winnipeg, a group of friends decided to form a recordcollectors groove. Founded by Erwin Antonio, Randy Mendoza, and Edward Daquina, Mother Plakers hopes to unite fellow music lovers whose goal is to get together occasionally so that they could talk about music, take turns in spinning their favorite records, share stories with each other, and relax over food and drinks after a day's work.
Last May 13, Mother Plakers marked its second anniversary with
a get-together at Erwin Antonio's home. In attendance were Giboy Trillana, Jommel Mansalapus, Bong Pasco, Jom Sardido, Dolly Atillo, Marco del Mundo, Phillip Nicdao, Jeric Cruz, Jhune Parcero, cofounders Randy Mendoza and Eduardo Daquina, and me.
Records spun that lively evening included albums by The Lotus Eaters; Echo & the Bunnymen; The Glove; The Jerks; Tears for Fears; The Chameleons; Mike Hanopol; Sampaguita; Care; Vitamin Z; Speed, Glue & Shinki; Bush; Nelly; Patti Austin; and Susan Wong.
I have been collecting records since my highschool days, in the mid-'80s--cassette tapes, vinyl records, and CDs--mostly New Wave, Progressive Rock, Metal, Alternative Rock, Britpop, Classical,
and a dose of Punk, Pop, and anything of personal interest. It's nice to get together with like-minded sonic spirits and share with each other the love for records.
Sa Madalíng Salitâ
Ang pagkahílig sa músika ay mas nagíging kaáyaayà kung itó ay sásabayan ng pangongolékta ng pláka at naibábahagì sa mga kaibígang mahílig din ríto.
Happy Asian Heritage Month
