Surrey Hills International Music Festival announces 2023 programme

2 – 13 May 2023

Surrey Hills International Music Festival (formerly Investec International Music Festival) is delighted to announce the programme for its 2023 season. Each spring, Surrey Hills International Music Festival (SHIMF) brings world-class musicians to perform in beautiful and unique venues across the Surrey Hills. Following 2022’s focus on Vaughan Williams and his Surrey connections, this season’s programme celebrates the wider world of international music-making, from Hollywood jazz to European chamber masterworks and contemporary British choral music.

2023 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:

• World-renowned choral ensemble Tenebrae return to the Festival to perform sacred works by J S Bach and Sir James MacMillan in the glorious Georgian splendour of Holy Trinity Church in Guildford.

• The Julian Bliss Quintet brings Hollywood jazz to the spectacular setting of RHS Garden Wisley’s Hilltop Building, in a programme celebrating some of the greatest tunes to have been used in film from the 1930s to the present day.

• The great Canadian-born cellist Gary Hoffman – ‘one of the music world’s best-kept secrets’* makes a welcome return to perform Mendelssohn, Nin, Brahms and Cassadó alongside SHIMF Artistic Director Wu Qian at The Menuhin Hall.

• The award-winning Sitkovetsky Trio (of which SHIMF Artistic Director and pianist Wu Qian is a founder member) performs chamber

18 FEBRUARY 2023 LOVE LOCAL

SHIMF’s on-going commitment to supporting young artists continues with two Lunchtime Young Artist Concerts: the first at West Horsley Place featuring the current holders of The Musicians’ Company’s New Elizabethan Award – guitar & soprano/double bass duo Gus McQuade & Eleanor Grant, and guitarist Sasha Savaloni – and the second at St James’ Church in the pictureperfect village of Shere, featuring gifted young students of The Yehudi Menuhin School.

The Sitkovetsky Trio also welcomes two Yehudi Menuhin School students to perform alongside them in Dvorak’s second Piano Quintet as part of 13 May’s Festival Finale programme.

Located in the beautiful Surrey Hills AONB, the Festival invites its audience not only to enjoy the highest calibre of music-making in some

stunning concert venues, but also to enjoy the wider benefits of the local natural landscape with Pilgrims’ Guided Walks in the countryside around West Horsley Place and Shere.

Festival Chairman Julia Pearson comments: “We are delighted to present this new season under the Festival’s founding title, Surrey Hills International Music Festival, celebrating the deep connection we have always had with this beautiful and culturally vibrant area. The Surrey Hills are at the heart of our identity both as an organisation and as a musical community, and we hope that our worldclass 2023 programme will draw music-lovers from far and wide to come and explore this very special place.”

Artistic Director & Festival Co-Founder Wu Qian comments: “I am thrilled we have such a varied programme for 2023, and as always, we have chosen some very special venues especially to suit the music being performed. What better place to hear Elizabethan airs and dances than West Horsley Place where Elizabeth I herself once stayed – and the stunning RHS Hilltop, at the heart of glorious RHS Garden Wisley, is the perfect location for a glamorous evening of Hollywoodinfused jazz! For me personally, it’s always a joy to return to The Yehudi Menuhin School where I studied from the age of 13, as The Menuhin Hall has a wonderfully intimate atmosphere for both performers and audience alike – and there couldn’t be a more beautiful acoustic for Tenebrae’s exquisite choral singing than the airy, serene Holy Trinity Church on Guildford’s historic High Street.”

VIP PROTECTION

Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.

The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and lowstandard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘highend’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains consistent at the pinnacle of their

trade and the chosen provider to many securityconscious individuals, families, and businesses. Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.

Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or gun-toting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.

John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.

Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

Luxury Surrey Hotel awarded Five Stars by The AA

Great Fosters has every reason to celebrate the new year. Just before Christmas the AA awarded the hotel its coveted five star rating. Rated and awarded by the AA’s professional inspectors Great Fosters is one of only 30 five star hotels in England outside London to hold this accolade. Ian Heath, Operations Director commented: ‘We’re thrilled that Great Fosters has been awarded five stars by The AA. This is the culmination of four years of investment in both the property and the team. Major refurbishments have taken place at the hotel since we purchased Great Fosters in 2018 and I am thrilled for Prem Kumar and his team that their passion, dedication and determination to offer our guests the highest standards of hospitality have been rewarded with this rating. It is the best start to 2023 that we could have wished for!’

Great Fosters is steeped in royal history and if you haven’t yet visited it’s the perfect place in which to retreat from Winter. Turn into the drive to see a magnificent Tudor building complete with chimney pots and tower and enter through a traditional wicket door to a warm welcome and a roaring log fire.

The estate has plenty to offer with a new menu that includes some enticing vegan dishes too if you are partaking in Veganuary. We are looking forward to trying the wood fried beetroots with vegan burrata, toasted seeds and pickled walnut. Head Chef Michael Mealey has recently returned to Great Fosters and his new a la carte menu, focussing on good quality local ingredients used creatively, launches this month. The Estate Grill also offers a very good value midweek lunch & supper menu at £29.50 for two courses or £33.50 for three. Or why not book into the newly launched Tudor Pass which now has Alex Payne at the helm? The Tudor Pass offers a superb tasting menu (£120 per person) at lunchtime and in the evening from Wednesday to Saturday; the restaurant is intimate with only seven tables and you’ll find many of the dishes presented at your table by Alex and his team, thus bringing the kitchen into the restaurant (but without the usual noise!).

Afternoon tea at Great Fosters has been a longstanding tradition and with warming log fires a plenty you can enjoy scrumptious sandwiches, light as air scones and dainty patisserie in the cosiest of surroundings.

CLASSICS IN THE CAPITAL

THE DETAILS

The fascinating world of classic cars takes centre stage at Olympia, London on Saturday 25th February for an exclusive auction of 100 of the finest cars of yesteryear by specialist auctioneer Historics.

Well-known for its vibrant classic car sales at venues including Ascot Racecourse, Historics is the official auction partner of The London Classic Car Show and is staging the auction midway through the three day event at Olympia, that’s been steeped in motoring history for more than a century.

Historics has assembled a truly spectacular array of classics for this sale, to suit all tastes and pockets.

For example there’s a magnificent example of an exceptionally rare 1954 Porsche 356 Pre-A Coupé, believed to be the earliest right-hand drive production 356. Joining it is an equally collectible 2.0 litre 1969 Porsche 911 S, plus a wonderful array of Porsche’s finest spanning several decades.

Italian classics are most certainly not be outdone, with a brace of timelessly-elegant late 1950’s Alfa Romeos joining a striking grand tourer in the shape of a 1972 Maserati Ghibli, one of just 13 delivered to the UK, whilst four years its junior a wonderful 1976 Ferrari Dino 246 GT is sure to get pulses racing.

Waving the sports car flag for Britain is a number of true archetypes... a very collectible 1964 Aston

To accommodate viewings for buyers, entry to the Historics auction at The London Classic Car Show up to and during the sale on Saturday 25th February is by auction catalogue, priced at £30, allowing entry for two. The catalogue can be purchased in advance via the Historics’ website and at the entrance to the auction. For full details, bidding registration and the regularly updated entries, visit historics.co.uk

NOTE: All visitors to the show can view the auction lots without charge on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th postauction and Sunday 26th February. For details of The London Classic Car Show, see theclassiccarshowuk.com

Martin DB5 leading the charge. Meanwhile an example of the holy grail of Jaguar E-Types, a flat floor 1961 Series 1 Roadster, is joined by a constellation of exceptional E-Types of different eras, plus more from the iconic marque.

As ever at Historics sales, there is a fine collection of Mercedes-Benz classics and no Historics sale would be complete without more affordable and less conventional classics. A rare 1953 Ford Consul Mk.1 Estate by Abbot of Farnham sets the tone, whilst the honour of the quirkiest entry at this showcase auction by Historics most surely goes to a rare, amphibious 1965 Amphicar 770 that’s equally at home on the road or on water!

THE LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW RETURNS TO OLYMPIA

24-26 February 2023

The London Classic Car Show is making a welcome return to prestigious Olympia in Kensington this month.

Entering its ninth year, the capital’s premier celebration of automotive culture and history will again be the must-attend season-opener to the year’s flourishing classic car scene for all classic car owners, collectors, experts and enthusiasts.

Olympia is steeped in motoring history having hosting blue-riband automotive shows for more than a century. The spectacular Grand Hall was home to the International Motor Exhibition from 1905 to 1936 and has accommodated a host of similarly distinguished car-themed events ever since… most recently The London Classic Car

With restrictions on indoor venues, the show was forced to innovate with an inspired move to a temporary new outdoor venue in Syon Park in June 2021… but now returns to its traditional February fixture under Olympia’s magnificent, Victorian, barrel-vaulted roof.

“We are thrilled to be bringing The London Classic Car Show back to Olympia,” confirmed Kate Woodley, Show Director at organiser Brand Events. “It’s a truly spectacular venue which provides us with the perfect backdrop for wonderful displays of iconic cars from throughout the ages.

Olympia already feels like our spiritual home, and we have a truly great show planned for 2023.”

the evergreen Porsche 911, the second will put the spotlight on Barn-Finds and Survivors.

The former will feature an eye-catching collection of evolving 911s from the original aircooled Type 901 launched at the Frankfurt Show in 1963 right up to the latest Type 992 supercars.

The latter will provide a fascinating insight into the uncovering and restoration of recently discovered relics as well as offering visitors a trip down memory lane with a line-up of oncemainstream models that are now becoming muchmissed rarities.

For 2020 the Show moved to a new home at Olympia, a more central venue boasting significant automotive history… and then, to provide a Covid-compliant setting, The London Classic Car Show 2021 relocated to a new outdoor setting at historic Syon Park, in West London.

The 2023 Show will take place between 24-26 February and advance tickets start from £25 per adult, £20 per child (6-16). Entry for children under the age of six years is free. INSPIRATION, COLOUR AND CHARACTERS

Internationally acclaimed artist Christian Develter makes a post pandemic splash in the UK with the opening of his first solo exhibition at Molasses House this month.

Christian Develter, a “global nomad”, born in 1968 in Blankenberge, Belgium, has resided and worked in Asia since the mid-nineties and now calls Cambodia home with a purpose-built studio nestled amongst the serene paddy fields of Siem Reap, home of the iconic Angkor Wat temple.

Christian uses oils as an instrument to portray his rich experiences of people and cultures around the world. As a highly versatile artist whose work pushes boundaries, he believes that despite cultural differences and starkly different socio-realities, there are moments that can be appreciated by everyone.

Christian’s sense of beauty and the individual strength and spirit of his characters is developed through careful consideration of line, lighting, and geometry as well as his insightful awareness

of the power of colour to reveal beyond the surface of each character. At the heart of these works is a search not just for physical beauty but also for something of the spirit that embraces and motivates each one in our era of hyper celebrity. The uniqueness of Christian’s work lies in his radical choice for strong colours and mixture of oils and acrylics usually preferring to combine them with bold shapes. His works are deeply powerful and compelling in the way they capture light and space in translating Christian’s desire to create large iconic works.

‘CHIN SERIES’ INSPIRATION

The inspiration for this body of work comes from the intricately tattooed faces of the Chin women located in the North-Western region of Myanmar. In 2012, Develter travelled the region extensively and visited the remote tribes of the Chin region, in which this series is entitled. Each painting from this series is named after a village or area within

the Chin region. The concept behind the works being the modern Asian face of today, overlayed with the ribal tattoos - grounding us back to our cultural roots and heritage. This striking collection of work is an invitation to explore the artist’s contemporary narrative of evolving cultures through his district creative style.

The Chin tribe and their tattoos are relatively unknown to the outside world. These tribes in north-western Myanmar (Chin and Rakhine State) to this day use tattoo facial markings that is a centuries old tradition to distinguish one hill tribe from another along with their marital status and social ranking. Together with the Derung tribe in Southwest China’s Yunnan province, they are the only other tribe known to adhere to this traditional ancient practice. Both tribes are believed to be from the same IndoTibetan lineage.

DEVELTER & MOLASSES HOUSE, AN ESSENTIAL EXHIBITION

Collaborating with cigar brand Siglo and Italian whiskey Samaroli, Christian draws upon his studies at Ghent Art School and Antwerp Fashion Academy, to create a joyful series of compositions, presenting a radiant kaleidoscope of shapes and forms. His choice of playful humour and bright colours recalls the artist’s view of popular fashions and trends. These are self evident in his most recent work, launched this month, building on the acclaimed Cigar Series which continues to evolve with global icons from film, fashion, literature and politics.

Develter’s world acclaimed works are housed in some of the most spectacular properties and art collections around the world including that of Royalty. The vibrant UK exhibition brings together a comprehensive collection and an immersive experience to view a curated vision of Christian’s internationally acclaimed signature works from his Original Oil Paintings and Limited Edition Lithograph Collections. Bold, vivid and iconic understate Develter’s work. A visual feast for the eyes and walls.

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK

The power of magic moments in sport

Schools have a responsibility to not only educate pupils in sport and exercise but to create magic moments that inspire, motivate and ignite true passion in their lives. Team sports are the optimum environment for this. Getting into team sports is straightforward through school as it is much harder to commit to a team sport without a fixed routine, timetable or opportunity to try out new activities. At Cranleigh we offer a variety of sports to provide the opportunity for a moment every term for each pupil to say “Wow, I love that”. These moments often come after showing resilience, working really hard to master a drill or technique and suddenly they’ve scored a goal in the final seconds or taken the winning catch. It’s not just the sense of achievement found through the joy from teammates that create those moments but the satisfaction of hard work paying off.

As children get older, meet new people and have families of their own they have a willingness to share their passion for sport with others in their lives. Often it is those adults who have memories of magic moments from childhood that sacrifice to drive their children to swimming in the early

hours or pay subs to a hockey club. As Director of Sport at Cranleigh it is my job to create these moments so that when they are older they choose to participate and include others too. Sport is very inclusive at a grass-roots level so when it comes to getting involved our pupils get plenty of opportunity to just enjoy themselves.

In addition to specialist directors of individual sports such as Hockey and Netball the majority of our coaches are also academic teachers who look after teams from 1st team level to U14Es. Our teachers bring a pastoral side to sports sessions as they know what is going on with pupils off the pitch. A real personal approach where each child is coached in a way that suits them encourages these moments and an overall feeling of enjoyment in sessions. When visiting expert coaches from organisations such as London Irish RFC attend training sessions at Cranleigh we prioritise the lower teams and staff to take advantage of the rich training necessary to spark improvement, enjoyment and passion for the sport. We don’t prioritise sport over anything else, which makes for a healthy school. You can be excellent at something without it completely dominating the landscape of the education you receive at Cranleigh.

Learning a language, a fun experience for all ages

Learning a new language has traditionally been associated with study or work. However, there is a big shift in the attitude to learning new languages and students of all ages now have a desire to connect with different cultures whether for natural curiosity or family reasons. With these new needs, comes an expectation to make language learning much more fun and engaging especially for students that are starting out.

At Pepe and Tete, we have found that a typical Spanish learning journey for a beginner will involve three stages. First the ‘picking up stage’ i.e., the ability to pick up the new concepts and pronunciations. Next comes the ‘retaining stage’ i.e., when a student starts to memorise the concepts more frequently than not. Finally, the ‘expressive stage’ i.e., when the student develops the confidence to express themselves in the new language. Normally, this comes from being understood despite articulating phrases at a low level of accuracy.

The magic word is practice. That is why our learning approach is founded on conversation as the best way to learn a language. Whether it’s practicing with native speakers or role-plays, our tutors place strong emphasis on social skills as a way of mastering a language across all ages and levels. Specifically, for children, we have developed a learning model that combines interactive learning and real-life interactions. We use Pepito, a fun and engaging character that brings to life various aspects of Spanish culture such as family, food and

hobbies.

When it comes to students, whether GCSE, /IB or A level, we have developed engaging programmes that combine tutoring, conversation with native speaking language buddies and full immersion programmes to Spain where students can connect with the culture while progressing with their study. For adults, we have developed a dedicated 1-year programme called Spanish Año. The programme is based on an English family looking to relocate to Spain and thus puts strong emphasis on conversation and practice as a way of mastering the language.

Learning a language does not stop at just being able to speak and listen but also includes cultural immersion, meeting new people and of course sampling the food. So, no matter your learning needs, we would be delighted to take you on a learning journey full of fun, new friendships and adventure.

If you would like to find out more about our programmes, please get in touch on team@pepeandtete.com

SHIFTING LANDSCAPE SPARKS CHANGE

Hurst College has grown and developed significantly over the past 15 years. It has doubled in size, become one of the leading independent schools in the south east academically and strengthened co-curricular engagement. There has also been a shift away from full boarding to weekly and flexi boarding and a move to an equal split between boys and girls.

Over the last three years, the Senior Leadership Team and the governors have been considering the best structure for the college - influenced by the shifting landscape in which the school operates and the way in which education has developed nationally. The decision was taken a year ago to reshape the college structure to reflect the shift towards an 11 to 16 educational curriculum and the way in which children grow up faster now than in the past. Hurst has introduced a Junior Prep (Reception to Year 6), echoing the maintained sector, with a separate Senior Prep (Year 7 and Year 8) focusing on these interesting developmental years.

A pioneering initiative, known as the Hurst Education Trust (HET), has also been developed. This initiative has been driven by a desire to do the right thing by integrating Hurst with a local group of schools - to benefit pupils and staff in the college and the HET schools. There are already three primary schools in the trust, and this will grow in a considered manner to include a secondary school.

The leadership structure has also evolved. Tim Manly has become Principal, responsible for the strategic direction of the College as well as CEO and leader of the HET. Dominic Mott, previously Head of the Senior School, has become Head of College and taken on the day-to-day responsibilities. He is succeeded by Lloyd Dannatt who was Deputy Head Academic. Lloyd has been key in developing the successful linearisation of academic programmes across the entire college. His role has been taken on by Michelle Zeidler who also acts as Director of Education for the HET.

These changes will enable the college to cater for the needs and ambitions of each school section - with a shared set of values and ethos. Although many changes have been introduced, and came fully into play in September, the transition has been carefully planned. The ethos will remain the same, and whilst continuing to develop strongly, the college will stay close to its vision and values, enabling pupils to achieve the best they can according to their ability - at the college and in the Hurst Education Trust..

Winter skin and menopause

Winter can be an especially disruptive time for skin and in particular menopausal skin. With the increase in dryness, loss of elasticity, sudden acne and redness (all common factors), d the cold and unpredictable temperatures to this and your skin can really suffer, be at its worst, leave you feeling helpless and at a loss with how to combat such symptoms.

It is common knowledge that all these skin changes are due to hormone depletion and imbalances, and whilst HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) can improve the condition of your skin (to a certain extent) it can’t always fix what has been lost or even allow you to continue reaping the benefits of the skin care products that you have been religiously using all along before menopause hit. In short, it is one of the best and most important times to overhaul your skin care routine and products with professional advice.

Partner at estetica clinics in Chertsey

and Windsor and a full member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Parisa Bahramian has succeeded in her endeavour to become more than just a qualified pharmacist. With her passion for skincare and a huge amount of credentials to her name, Parisa cannot stress enough the importance of seeking out appropriate products and treatments that will enhance your changing skin tone, texture and elasticity at a time that can leave pre-menopausal and peri-menopausal women feeling very despondent.

Since qualifying as a pharmacist at Brighton University over 18 years ago Parisa Bahramian has combined her medical expertise with facial aesthetics and her desire to be at the forefront of any relevant cosmetic developments. responsible for the loss of dermal collagen and lipid (fat) production which instantly causes thinning of the dermic layers, diminished elasticity, increased dryness, texture and blemishes. In youth we hold many mechanisms which help with our maintenance and regeneration, but during menopause, these begin to subside and we age rapidly, visibly so in our skin.

HRT can reverse some of the internal biological factors brought about by the menopause by restoring some of the previous functions of the skin but this is by no means 100% restorative or effective. At our clinics we can aid this mechanically with some topical agents such as micro needling, chemical peels and hydrafacials, and also via the injection of incredible products such as Sculptra and Profhilo. We also have an amazing range of products that I tailor for your ‘take home’ skin care routine to continue day and night that compliment all the treatments we provide and totally transform your skin”.

The following procedures at estetica clinics, and performed by Parisa, are all worthy of a mention

too when it comes to looking after menopausal skin as she explains:

“Microneedling encourages collagen production by taking advantage of the body’s natural healing response to trauma by using small, sterilised needles to prick the skin. The results, after multiple sessions, are smooth skin tissue and firm, toned skin.

Chemical peels reveal the more youthful skin underneath by removing dead skin cells and stimulating the growth of new skin cells via an applied chemical solution. An improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, acne scaring and other skin imperfections can also be seen in many cases.

Hydrafacials use a unique, patented VortexFusion delivery system to exfoliate, extract and hydrate skin.

Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulant that contains poly-L-lactic acid which restores facial volume lost to ageing with long lasting results (up to four years).

Profhilo is a revolutionary moisturising treatment in the form of a unique hyaluronic acid injectable gel which stimulates the skin cell receptors to counteract skin laxity, improve firmness, boost and also hydrate skin - an amazing all-rounder.

Amongst our revolutionary procedures we are also home to many high performance machines which (coupled with a qualified professional) can really turn your skin around. For instance Tixel: a non-laser technology using only heat and motion for very impressive results in skin tightening and the improvement of scars. Intracel, another machine we use, is a micro-needling, fda approved, non-surgical device that is combined with radio frequency to ramp up collagen production, so has more benefits than micro needling alone”.

These are just a few examples of the many effective procedures available at estetica clinics and prove very popular and with outstanding results. But before Parisa proceeds with any treatment on her patients she first carries out a VISIA skin analysis which delivers a superior experience for her aesthetic and skin care consultations. By expertly capturing imagines with its most advanced software, Parisa can then determine skin type, classification, problem areas that aren’t visible to the naked eye and in turn create a bespoke skincare routine and package for you.

London Fashion Week Preview Autumn/Winter 2023 Collections

17th - 21st February 2023

The first of the year’s London Fashion Week hits the capital this month. The world-famous London Fashion Week, presented by Clearpay, returns with catwalks, celebrities, glitz and glamour. It is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world – and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers alongside Paris, Milan and New York. It presents an unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent and the best and brightest names in the industry.

While many of us are already planning our Spring wardrobe, designers at London Fashion Week will be showcasing their Autumn/ Winter 2023 Collections - both menswear and womenswear, as a hybrid digital and physical event.

It is a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends - whether colourful, crazy or controversial - the world is watching as fashion history is made.

A provisional schedule for London Fashion Week has been announced and so far, it sees the return of over 100 emerging and established

designers. Brands set to return include iconic British luxury brand Burberry, who will be presenting their first collection under the new creative direction of Daniel Lee. Also, DAVID KOMA, JW Anderson, Emilia Wickstead, Roksanda, Christopher Kane, Simone Rocha, Erdem, Julien Macdonald and Halpern.

The BFC has announced an exciting line-up of events and activations to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its internationally celebrated BFC NEWGEN initiative. BFC NEWGEN is the most established designer development scheme globally, set up by the BFC to enable a group of designers, including the late Lee Alexander McQueen, to showcase their collections at London Fashion Week in 1993. The year-long celebration will kick off at LFW February 2023 and will provide an opportunity for the creative community to come together to celebrate and acknowledge the scheme’s illustrious history and alumni, and London’s legacy in nurturing emerging talent and the next generation of visionary creatives.

Lily James stars in glamorous new beauty campaign

Lily James is starring in a new beauty campaign inspired by old Hollywood glamour.

James, 33, is putting the spotlight on Charlotte Tilbury’s latest release – the nextgeneration Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter.

She models the product alongside Jourdan Dunn, Lihi Menahem, Hadassah McGrew, Aimee Cheng-Bradshaw and Bella Tilbury – Charlotte Tilbury’s niece.

James first showed off the product on the red carpet for the 2022 Fashion Awards – in a fairytale-inspired Rodarte outfit – and is likely to be a familiar face this awards season, as she’s nominated for the Best Actress award for her role in Pam & Tommy at the Golden Globes.

“As we head into the awards season, I’m absolutely thrilled to reveal Golden Globe, Emmy nominated, and beauty muse ICON Lily James will star in my latest campaign for Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter,” says Tilbury.

“Like me, she gets the power of glow and is obsessed with the glow glide texture of my new highlighter innovation which she uses for all her red carpet looks! We had so much fun shooting this campaign together, the lights, the cameras, the dresses, the glamour – it was the most magical time!”

James wears an ivory silk gown in the shots with diamond earrings and loose waves in her hair.

“Charlotte Tilbury is the Queen of Glow and I love her new Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter,” James says.

“It has this incredible sculpting effect on my cheekbones and jawline, and the glow glide texture behaves differently to anything I’ve experienced before – it does exactly what it says – smoothing out my pores, putting everything into soft focus and playing with the light to make me look illuminated and lifted from every angle. I know great lighting can transform your face and Charlotte has captured and bottled those light tricks in Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter. It is my go to glow trick!”

Hollywood Glow Glide Face Architect Highlighter is available in seven colours on charlottetilbury.com, £38.

10 DESIGNS THAT MAKE TIME STAND STILL

There are some furniture designs that seem to belong to both the past and the future, that wouldn’t look out of place in the home of your grandparent or grandchild, that give no clue to when they were designed by the way they look –are they a recent Barber and Osgerby triumph, or a classic Gio Ponti number?

Really, it’s thanks to the Modernist movement which began its climb to dominance in the early 1900s, properly getting going post World War II when contemporary designers turned their backs on the ornate classical furniture of their forbears, instead looking to tone things down and shake things up. As Le Corbusier put it; ‘A great epoch has begun. There exists a new spirit.’

Out went Art Deco, Neoclassical and Victorian styles – no more dark carved woods, gilded carpentry or rich patterns – and in came the shiny and new. Pared-back forms, a focus on function over style and visual lightness, all gloriously massproduced with gleaming new technologies, were

finally available and affordable(ish) to all.

Design icons rained down. Furniture took on sculptural, minimal forms as hallowed architects began producing smaller objects to fill their projects, and names such as Eames, Wegner, Castiglioni and Breuer were sanctified in the furniture hall of fame.

Jump forward to the present day, and the tubular steel is gleaming just as brightly as it did 70, 80, 90, 100 years ago, and those alluring curves look like they just fell out of the pages of a contemporary design magazine. Traversing the decades is no easy feat, yet several key 20th-century pieces of furniture have made the leap with ease, their utter minimalism protecting them from the ravages of time and blending them in so well with the present-day, it’s hard to tell what new and what’s a revered design icon.

We all know the bonafide classics – the Wishbone chairs, the Tulip tables, the Eames loungers – so let’s discover those (slightly) more under-the-radar pieces that have made it through the years thanks to their brilliantly time-proof aesthetic.

Wassily lounge chair by Marcel Breuer, 1925

Designed by Hungarian modernist architect Marcel Breuer in 1925, it’s hard to believe the gleaming shapely form of the Wassily lounge chair, now produced by Knoll, is hovering around its hundredth birthday!

Snoopy lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1967

A 1960s child in more ways than one, the Snoopy lamp by Italian architect and designer brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was created in 1967, taking its shape from the loveable illustrative dog from the cartoon strip Peanuts which was at its peak at the time.

La Chaise by Charles & Ray Eames, 1948

The Dali-esque La Chaise by lauded American industrial designers Charles & Ray Eames was inspired by the Floating Figure sculpture by French artist Gaston Lachaise. A conceptual, freeform design on which the user could either recline or sit up straight on, the daybed is an icon of organic design.

CH07 Shell Lounge Chair by Hans J. Wegner, 1963

A new type of shell chair with three legs, no armrests and a deep recline, the CH07 Shell Lounge Chair was created by ‘master of chairs’ Danish architect Hans J. Wegner in 1963, its organically curving seat gaining it the nickname of ‘the smiling chair’.

ORIGIN’S SWIMMING POOL TRENDS 2023

Indoor swimming pools are a luxurious and stylish addition to any home, offering a whole new place in your home or garden to relax, have fun and maximise your time.

The latest trends in indoor swimming pools are all about creating a unique and personalised space that reflects your style and preferences. Origin has been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and know that no two projects are the same, every swimming pool designed and built is unique to the client. A lot of trends come and go over the years but there are always some that never seem to go out of style and the trends for 2023 are no exception. These trends can provide enough scope to help create beautiful and functional spaces and with so many to choose from, now is the perfect time to consider enhancing or adding an indoor swimming pool to your home.

94 FEBRUARY 2023 HOME & PROPERTY

WATER FEATURES

Water features can add visual interest, help create a relaxing ambience, and provide therapeutic benefits. Even from a purely aesthetic point of view, water features are a simple yet guaranteed way to add style and individuality to any swimming pool. Water features can come in many shapes and forms; waterfalls, fountains, massage jets or spas and can be customised to fit any taste and budget. They can easily be controlled by a variety of methods and with the help of Origin’s experts, you can create an environment that provides a unique and personalised swimming experience, which is not only beautiful but functional too.

‘BEST OF BOTH WORLDS’

This is an increasingly popular trend in home swimming pool design. These pools are designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding outdoor environment, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of an indoor pool while still feeling connected to the outdoors. ‘Best of both worlds’ pools typically feature large windows or bi-folding doors that can be opened to their full extent, letting natural light and fresh air flood the pool house. This simple design allows you to bring the outside in and swim in the comfort of your own home while still enjoying the natural beauty of your surroundings.

SWIM JETS

Swim jets are a great way to maximise the functionality of an indoor swimming pool, particularly in smaller spaces. They can be installed in the pool and their powerful jets of water create a current for you to swim against, allowing for a

more intense workout and providing an innovative way to swim ‘virtual laps’ in a smaller space. The strength of the swim jets can also generate a massaging effect, adding to the relaxing sensation of being in the water, releasing endorphins and combating stress.

SCANDI STYLE

When it comes to indoor swimming pool design, muted colour palettes are taking over. The neutral or subdued shades help create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making the pool area a relaxing and inviting space. The minimalistic, ‘scandi’ design choice is great for indoor swimming pools as it can be easily paired with contemporary or traditional style, and create a sophisticated and elegant look. Creating a cohesive design in any space can be tough, however, muted colours can be the perfect backdrop for a pool house, allowing the pool itself to be the focal point.

HOLIDAY INSPIRATION

Do you have a favourite holiday destination? If neutral shades aren’t your style, perhaps you’d prefer to incorporate some exotic and holidayinspired elements into your indoor swimming pool design. Elements such as mosaics, lush greenery and natural stone can be used to create a fun and inviting atmosphere taking inspiration from all over the globe. Design components like lighting and water features can also showcase your exotic inspiration and lend themselves to the overall feel of your swimming pool design. Looking abroad for your design influence is a great way to create a unique and personalised swimming experience for the whole family and ensure you never have the holiday blues again.

THE BEST HOUSEPLANTS TO BOOST YOUR WELLBEING

It’s no surprise plants can cheer us up in the winter months.

New research by Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com) has backed this up, finding 40% of those surveyed believe colourful houseplants make them feel happier.

But they don’t just lift your mood. The NASA Clean Air study found that many houseplants can clean the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene and ammonia, says podcaster and garden expert Ellen Mary, who recently launched People Plants Wellbeing (peopleplantswellbeing.com), a new nature-based wellbeing consultancy.

“The more plants the merrier, as long as you have the time and space to care for them,” says Mary. “To clean the air you can have fewer plants if they have larger foliage, as they can be more efficient at reducing toxins.”

She continues: “Studies into the wellbeing benefits of houseplant ownership showed that even just being in the presence of indoor plants can improve wellbeing, so not just softening aesthetics but also feeling a connection to the natural world. For those working in rooms with plants, they performed better on cognitive tasks and lower levels of physiological stress.”

According to the RHS, studies indicate that indoor plants can lead to increased worker productivity and increased pain tolerance, for example, where plants were used in hospital settings.

Air purifying

“The spathiphyllum, or peace lily, is a great choice for beginner and seasoned plant parents alike, and will thrive in a bright spot out of direct sunlight. This striking plant should be watered weekly, or when its soil feels dry to the touch,” says Claire Bishop, head of houseplants at Dobbies Garden Centres (dobbies.com).

“If your plant isn’t flowering, water it, feed it and move it to a brighter spot for a beautiful addition to your home that will not only brighten up your interiors but also your mood.”

Mary recommends pothos, an easy-to-grow bushy specimen which thrives on low light and neglect, and purifies the air of toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide. It also helps to eliminate odours and is said to relieve tired screen eyes, she notes.

Hedera helix (English ivy) is also a good air purifier – it grows in partial shade and is a low-care plant, and its long vines make it great for shelves and mantelpieces.

Green space

“If you’re looking to give your home a boost of greenery without spending a fortune, smaller plants and ferns are a fantastic option. Adiantum

(maidenhair fern), nephrolepis (sword fern) and phlebodium fern varieties are all typically low cost and will elevate any room in your home,” Bishop suggests.

“The Dypsis lutescens is another wonderful choice and comes in a variety of sizes, making it ideal for homes of all styles and will instantly improve any space.”

Wellbeing wonders

Bishop calls houseplants “great additions to your home office, to perk up your working environment and make you more productive.

“If caring for houseplants isn’t your forte but you still want to feel the benefits of them, consider a sansevieria (snake plant). These quirky plants can go without water for up to a month so require very little attention, making them perfect for those just starting their plant journey.”

Bathroom boosters

“To promote wellness in your bathroom and give this space a zen look and feel, use houseplants to create a spa-like vibe,” says Bishop. “Ferns, with their air purifying qualities, thrive in a humid environment, making them ideal for your bathroom.

“Plant your ferns in soil with good drainage and keep them moist with weekly mistings. If your fern is looking dehydrated, you can plunge it into a sink or bucket of water to bring it back to life. Simply submerge your pot into the water and then remove it, letting it drain completely before placing it back into a bright spot.”

Bedroom calm

Mary recommends orchids for the bedroom, which hold symbolism of positive energy prosperity and growth and can improve sleep, promote relaxation and enhance feelings of calmness and peace, she says. They also don’t need much watering and can flower for long periods and reflower after resting. Another good choice for the bedroom is sansevieria, which thrives in low light, photosynthesizes even at night and is easy to grow, she recommends.

Positive energy

The money plant (Crassula ovata/Jade plant) exudes positive energy, says Mary, and is thought to bring good luck, growth, prosperity and wealth, while also releasing a lot of oxygen.

Charley Chau’s Faroe

The Best and Most Practical Fabric For a Dog to Go to Bed with This Winter

With all the warmth and depth of wool, but without the maintenance headache, the brilliant Faroe fabric was an instant hit with customers of luxury dog bedding company Charley Chau when it debuted on the brand’s Bliss Bolster Bed in 2020. Three years on, Faroe has now spun its way onto even more Charley Chau Beds, meaning there’s a snuggly bedfellow to keep every dog warm and cosy this winter.

Available across Charley Chau’s signature pocket-style Snuggle Dog Bed in Classic and Winter Warmer styles, the Bliss Bolster Bed, Day Bed Mattress and Anti-Microbial Memory Foam Dog Bed Mattress, it is now freshly launched as Bed Bumper Sets for Crates and Rattan Baskets. In its latest presentation, Faroe is now bringing all the snugly feels to turn a cold, unwelcoming dog crate into a cosy little den, and giving the enduringly timeless rattan dog basket a luxe makeover.

But why is Faroe so utterly fabulous for dogs and their dwellings, and especially in winter? Despite being soft, warm and inviting touch, Faroe is a tough canine cookie that is more than capable of withstanding the paces of daily dog use. Tough enough for heavy commercial upholstery use, with a Martindale Rub Test Score of 100,000, Faroe surpasses the entry level rub score of 30,000 for

‘commercial grade’ fabrics.

As well as being hardy, the fibres used to weave Faroe have also been treated with a permanent stainguard treatment, which means surface dirt never gets the chance to get a proper hold in the fabric. In the winter months when weather is inclement and muddy paws frequent, the stainguard feature becomes extremely beneficial, as it means the fabric can be easily spot cleaned in between washes. Additionally, Faroe’s moisturewicking and quick drying properties means moisture is wicked away from wet dog’s coat and the fabric dries out quickly, so a dog is less likely to suffer a consistently damp bed.

Handling dog hair is a breeze for Faroe too. Thanks to its tight weave, the amount of hair that works its way into the fabric itself is reduced and what remains is easily removed with a quick shake or a light hoover over.

For a clean and pristine dog bed and hygiene in the home, all of Charley Chau’s Faroe range features fully removeable covers that can go into the washing machine on a 30° to 40° cycle, dependent on the style of bed, with the fabric washing beautifully time after time.

With prices from £85 cosy up a four-legged friend’s bed with Faroe this winter at Charleychau.com and see dogs sleeping in sublime comfort @Charleychau on socials.

Spathroom Chic: Interest in home spa bathrooms soars

Luxurious, spa-inspired bathrooms are going to be big news in 2023, according to new research from independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore.

Data from Pinterest shows searches for the term ‘home spa bathroom’ are up 190% over the last two years.

Abbas Youssefi, Founder of Porcelain Superstore, said: “How homeowners perceive their bathroom has changed.

“The bathroom has always been one of the most functional rooms in the home, but in a post-pandemic world, homeowners are looking to create gorgeous-looking spaces where they can completely unwind.”

Abbas believes large format, natural-effect tiles that exude effortless luxury will be the ones to watch in 2023.

He said: “Large format tiles mean minimal joins, which improves flow and can help the bathroom feel more expansive. Combine with natural-effect tiles, such as stone, wood or marble for an opulent

finish.”

Here Abbas selects his pick of the perfect home spa bathroom (or ‘spathroom’) tiles from Porcelain Superstore.

Lucas ranges that both offer dining and relaxed sofa set options. The elegant Chester Royal set features a classic resin design while the new Mazie two-seat set boasts a contemporary metal finish, suitable for most outdoor spaces.

Tranquil Nature

An overall Scandi design with Japanese influences and touches of French weave, Tranquil Nature is both beautifully balanced and effortlessly chic. This modern theme blends soft flowing shapes with a natural colour palette and chalky matt finish for a contemporary look that still feels organic. A raw, earthy colour palette of grounding neutrals, moss greens and charcoal seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living to create a natural flow from home to garden.

Tranquil Nature features a wide range of Dobbies’ new outdoor furniture, with something to suit a variety of homes and budgets. The Ashton line features a six-seat dining seat and mini modular sofa set in a light neutral tone. New for SS23, Eve includes a stylish folding egg chair, suitable for balconies and small spaces.

Earth and Soul

An organic blend of calming nature and maximalist style, this Mediterranean sunset inspired theme brings together natural tones of brown and taupe and lifts them with vibrant pops of citrus and claret red for a contemporary feel. Alps remains one of Dobbies’ top selling ranges, with the popular tan colour way returning for 2023 in modular sofa sets, bistro sets and on-trend hanging egg chairs options. The modern Cintra range is also back for SS23 with both lounge and dining varieties and is complemented perfectly by the all-new Palermo standing egg chair with its sleek wicker design.

Wild Heritage

A theme that embraces nature and all it has to offer, from the established allotment to the windowsill herb garden, Wild Heritage has gardening at the heart of its design. This allinclusive theme honours ageing materials and weathered beauty, drawing inspiration from the nature that surrounds us. Traditional forest greens, terracotta and light oak tones are highlighted with fig and vanilla for an ageless overall look. Dobbies has built on the popularity of the

Florence firepit set with a new six seat option for 2023 and has brought back the much-loved Copenhagen and Rio wooden sets that offer fantastic quality for less. The good value Oliver Bistro is new for SS23 and has a modern, relaxed shape that encapsulates the essence of Wild Heritage.

Summer Colour

Summer Colour celebrates the beauty and fun of bold colour and blends rich reds, pinks, Verdigris and digital lavender tones together to create a joyful collection that brings outdoor living to life. Bright ombres and vibrant graphical prints make this youthful collection pop, while chunky, playful shapes give it a cool edge.

The Juno bistro set was a hit in 2022 and returns for this year with a new four seat version, while the new colourway in the Nectar collection demonstrates a unique way to make a statement with bold colours in your garden. The new Bologna egg chair is also predicted to be a hit. The collections launch in Dobbies stores across the UK and online from Spring 2023: dobbies.com.
