Mayor OF SIOUX FALLS Paul TenHaken

I

n my role as Mayor, I have the opportunity to interact daily with residents, community members and business leaders across industries and company sizes. Whether it’s sharing a meal with a downtown restaurant owner or mentoring young entrepreneurs, these conversations better my understanding of the issues that are top of mind in Sioux Falls. The common thread I hear from residents is their desire to make Sioux Falls an even better place to live and work. It’s clear from Sioux Falls’ accolades that we are doing more than a few things right. Sioux Falls consistently earns top rankings as a place to visit and live because of our thriving economy, community attractions and amenities, to name a few.

But it’s really the people of our community who give Sioux Falls the leading edge. It’s the people—including those behind our local businesses—who continue to help keep our economy strong and make Sioux Falls a vibrant community. You’ll have the chance to meet several of them in this publication. I encourage you to take some time to get to know the faces of Sioux Falls—both the people featured in these pages and the new faces in your neighborhood, church or workplace. In 2022, let’s continue to build relationships and form community for an even stronger Sioux Falls.

WELCOME. first heard about the "Faces of" concept in 2016 from a publisher out of Omaha, Nebraska. They had created a magazine that helps promote local business by featuring a "Face" of a specific business type (ex: "Face Of Architecture"). This publisher found that the publication was able to connect community members with local Omaha businesses. From there, I talked to other publishers and wanted to see how the publication was received in their markets. Overall, we found that the feedback was really great in those regions, too. Of course, I love and will champion the idea of promoting community. That's why, in 2021 we decided to bring this concept to the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo and Bismarck-Mandan communities. And it was a hit. Now, it's Sioux Falls' turn. We hope you enjoy this publication and take the opportunity to get to know some of the people behind this thriving business community. In 11 years, we have been able to create over 400 magazines. All of which are solely based in telling positive community stories! This is another piece to that puzzle and I truly believe you will enjoy reading about your friends and neighbors in the ensuing pages.

In turn, we are connecting our readers to businesses they may not even be aware of. By making this a sponsored magazine we were able to produce the publication at a high quality and make 40,000 copies free to the public. Our sales and editorial teams tried to ensure that we reached out to credible "Faces" of the categories we chose. Our goal is for readers to enjoy learning more about some of the people behind the businesses that make our community thrive. Hopefully, it will create a better sense of community and also encourage more of us to shop local! They are committed to being at the front of the ever-evolving industry and offer full turnkey services for wireless, renewables, oil/gas and transportation sectors. Led by founder and CEO Craig Snyder, VIKOR has been named one of INC 5000 Fastest-Growing Companies for four consecutive years. “When people ask me how we have become so successful, I often joke that VIKOR is a 30-year overnight success,” Snyder said. “We’ve learned a lot over the last 30-plus years. We like to think of ourselves as the biggest mom-and-pop company in our industry with more room to grow. We still have that small company feel. It speaks to the amazing people that make up who VIKOR is today.” Today, VIKOR has 200 employees and 9 locations throughout the nation. However, the Sioux Falls community will always be a special place to Snyder. “I love the sense of family in Sioux Falls. I love the sense of community and belonging,” he said. “I love that our city leaders have invested in technology and invited and encouraged technology businesses to enter the market by clearing the regulatory path for them to invest in our city ahead of our much bigger neighbors.”

VIKOR shows its appreciation for the Sioux Falls community by encouraging its employees to get involved. In 2021, VIKOR employees gave 200 hours of service to the community! Snyder’s impact goes well beyond the telecommunication industry. In addition to serving his community, he also impacts his employees through his leadership skills. “Craig is an outstanding leader. His focus is on developing people,” Director of Marketing and Corporate Strategy Mike Fowler said. “He often explains that VIKOR is the laboratory of human development. We are building leaders here at VIKOR. He has placed VIKOR in a position to succeed and become the premier contractor in the industry.”

K

nown for their late night hours, award-winning broasted chicken and 36 specialty pizzas to choose from, Boss’ Pizza & Chicken is a local staple in Sioux Falls. After 17 years of business, Boss’ Pizza now has four local stores: two typical delivery and carry-out pizzerias and two sports bars decorated to highlight local high school and college sports. Not only do they pride themselves on providing fresh, quality food, they also are committed to giving back to the community. “Staying involved in the community is one of the things we take the most pride in. We sponsor local athletic teams from youth to men's and women's leagues. We make it a point to take food to the Mission, St. Francis

House, Children's Inn or Bishop Dudley on a regular basis. We have been doing a Free Thanksgiving Dinner for the last 11 or 12 years at our location on Minnesota avenue… Community involvement and giving back is very important to us,” owner Jeremy Seefeldt said. Boss’ Pizza & Chicken is also dedicated to providing leadership opportunities to their staff members by promoting from within. “At this time, there are six people who came up through this company and started on the ground floor (delivery driver or cook) who are now part owners in their own Boss' location, a position they earned by proving work ethic and intangibles that showed me who they were. I brought them into

the business without any money out of their pocket,” Seefeldt said. According to Seefeldt, the success of Boss’ Pizza is largely due to their skilled staff and dedicated customers. “We owe our staff and our loyal customers, who are the best customers in the world because their word of mouth advertising has helped us grow more than anything else, the biggest thank you you could ever imagine,” Seefeldt said.

While many know Boss’ for their delivery, having the food directly from the kitchen is even better. “We are a full-service bar and restaurant that actually cares about making sure the customer gets great service and a great product,” owner Jeremy Seefeldt said. “We also have a great atmosphere, and we feel that our focus on local sports adds to that. They offer a wide array of services including inspections for buyers and sellers, commercial inspections, termite inspections plus radon and mold testing. The current owners, Brad and Kathy Horstman, take an educational approach to every inspection, inspecting it as if their own family would be living or working there. HouseMaster walkthroughs with clients and REALTORS© are key to any inspection. Educating homeowners on how to maintain their home as well as where things are in the home is essential. They are there for their clients long after the home inspection with their HouseMaster Cloud App and are also just a phone call away.

As a locally owned, operated and family-run business, they provide high-quality products and professional installation for local homeowners. They’ve set out to change the way the home improvement industry works, and strive to provide the best contractor experience around from start to finish. At ABC Seamless, you can find exclusively retailed Seamless steel siding and gutters and Renewal by Anderson replacement windows and doors, in addition to high-quality Provia Entry doors. Each product is custom-made and perfectly measured to fit your home. Despite the oneof-a-kind products, what makes ABC Seamless truly unique is their dedication to family and community. The business was founded by owner Brad Halverson and has since been expanded to include his two sonsin-law, Justin VanDeBerg and Jerry Mendoza and his daughter Mandi VanDeBerg. Rather than subcontract, they employ their own full-time crews, many of whom have been with them for decades. When asked about what makes their company so successful, Brad replied, “It all comes down to each individual on our team. A product

can be considered great on its own, but at the end of the day, the installation is what really matters. We’re fortunate to have a great group of professionals here who really care about their craft.” Not only do customers have peace of mind that their products are highquality, but also that those products will be installed correctly by a company that backs their work. The success of ABC Seamless is evident: they’ve been voted #1 Local Best in Sioux Falls for 17 consecutive years! Besides serving their customers, they are also dedicated to serving their community. In fact, they’ve been involved in local events like building playhouses with their products to give away. Although his brother's English was good, having learned the language as an adult, he had a thick accent. “During the adoption process, I remember the lawyer being rude to my brother because of his accent,” Juarez said. “And I remember thinking, ‘how is it ever okay for somebody to pay you their hard-earned money and you’re still rude to them because of their accent.’ I didn’t want anyone who couldn’t speak English or anyone with thick accents to have the same experience that my brother had.” The rest is history. Today, Juarez specializes in business/corporate work, commercial litigation, personal injury and worker’s compensation. Juarez is married to his wife Elizabeth and they have a five-month old son, Liam.

J

ohn Berdahl, MD is one of the leading international eye surgeons. He is equipped to employ the most innovative and advanced techniques available to effectively treat cataracts, glaucoma, cornea, nearsightedness and farsightedness. He has spearheaded some of the most exciting research in ophthalmology, both in the U.S. and across the world. He has received multiple Teacher of the Year awards, World's Top Ophthalmologists awards and research accolades. Given the extraordinary need for excellent eye surgery, John continues to provide free care through mission work both locally and globally. Dr. Berdahl is passionate about connecting with patients to get to the root cause of their problem. “The way to make connections is to slow down and focus on other people. Find out what a patient cares about deeply and understand how their vision fits into that and then discuss how you can help the patient achieve that goal.” The doctors at Vance Thompson Vision have both a global reputation and provide excellent care in our local community, ensuring you get the best eye surgery possible.

D

aniel Terveen, MD is an expert in caring for the most challenging cornea, glaucoma and cataract patients. He is an active advocate for improvements in patient care and has won numerous, prestigious awards for his excellence in leadership and research. In addition, he takes pride in making meaningful connections with his patients. “There is no shortcut for meaningful connections. Everybody has a need to be listened to. So when time is short, active listening helps patients and team members know they matter, and that gets to the heart of the issues faster,” Dr. Terveen said. “I also find commonalities as quickly as possible. A common friend, experience or interest allows people to feel a connection, and in the Midwest, it doesn’t take long to find a relative in common.”
