Intro

Dragi čitatelji,

Dear readers,

Mi smo BiH predstavljali svijetu, a svijet BiH. Upoznali smo divne ljude i razvili trajna drugarstva.

When Furaj.ba magazine began to take its first steps five years ago, none of us could have imagined that our primary goal—promoting B&H, its destinations, natural resources, tourist offers, talented and successful Bosnians and Herzegovinians—would turn into a myriad of wonderful stories and experiences. We quite literally span the globe and set out into the world bringing along on the pages of our magazine a breath of B&H only to come back home with stories featuring the best tourist destinations on the planet. We presented B&H to the world, and the world to B&H. We met some amazing people and made lasting friendships. Tourists and foreign citizens who live in B&H have recognised Furaj.ba magazine’s positive energy, and we always felt really pleased to know just how much interest the magazine’s newest edition would generate upon appearing in the most popular catering establishments and how quickly readers would snap it up.

Even though tough restrictions have been introduced to address the pandemic, travel enthusiasts from B&H began to explore their homeland more actively. We played our part in it by writing about various places across the country worth exploring. And now, with the first snow of the season, we are writing about the best winter getaways where we can breathe in clean air and find inner peace. That is more than enough for us to leave 2020 and tread lightly on our journey to 2021.

UZBUDLJIVO PUTOVANJE FURAJ.BA MAGAZINA, JEDINSTVENOG U SVIJETU BOSANSKOHERCEGOVAČKE ŠTAMPE

O

Zajedno s vama i uvijek uz vas.

Pored čudesne metropole, Istanbula, u Turskoj smo obišli kompletnu obalu, u stijenu uklesane Likijske grobnice, top destinacije Efes, Kastamonu i odvažno koračali staklenom terasom iznad Çatak kanjona.

TRAVELS THE WORLD

EXCITING JOURNEY OF THE FURAJ.BA MAGAZINE, A UNIQUE MAGAZINE ON THE BOSNIAN-HERZEGOVINIAN PRESS SCENE

F

rom the very inception, Furaj. ba magazine clearly showed its commitment to promoting B&H, its renowned and yet to be discovered stunningly beautiful areas, inspiring destinations, wonderful stories created in life’s workshops by diligent, educated, creative and talented Bosnians and Herzegovinians. On our journey together, we span the globe to peak into some of the planet’s gorgeous areas, top destinations the most passionate travel enthusiasts love to explore. Published in two languages, Furaj. ba has become a regularly read magazine in the offices of a number of diplomats, managers of large companies and cultural institutions, while foreigners living in Bosnia and Herzegovina have recognised how important it is by discovering the charms our country has to offer on the magazine’s pages. Acclaimed representatives of different societal milieus—business, acting, music, art, sport, diplomacy—were Furaj.ba magazine’s guests… No less attention was given to the people from small Bosnian and Herzegovinian towns. Their diligent

hands created fairytale-like tourist destinations or started small manufacturing businesses to preserve our traditions, which is one more reason for a larger influx of tourists. Athletes who achieved excellent results breaking barriers in spite of their disabilities have demonstrated the strength, resilience and the unbreakable spirit of the Bosnian and Herzegovinian people. Their stories have inspired and moved people, and thanks to the Furaj.ba magazine they were able to catch the attention of international organisations some of which decided to provide substantial support to a number of athletes to help them win competitions. Apart from publishing travel stories featuring some faraway places, the Furaj.ba magazine also attended the world’s most renowned tourism events. A fifth year anniversary is a small milestone, but the number of miles that brought us to where we are is large. It was an interesting, exciting and challenging journey. We will keep covering many miles in the same spirit in the future. Together with you and always by your side.

In addition to informing our readers about local places, Furaj.ba has regularly delighted you with travel stories from some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. We explored incredible parts of Indonesia, the country of dramatic landscapes, where we observed Komodo dragons in their natural habitat, spent time at the foot of the Sinabung Volcano in North Sumatra, went for a swim at one of the world’s five pink beaches, gained insight into the local culture by watching interesting performances, and became familiar with Hindu traditions by visiting some of the numerous ancient temples evoking a sense of admiration. We were enchanted by the Asian countries of Vietnam, Qatar and Malaysia, and we used the opportunity to visit one of the world’s top ten beaches—the Datai Langkawi. Other than the wondrous capital of Turkey—Istanbul, we went all around the seaside, exploring the rock-cut Lycian tombs and top sites in Ephesus and Kastamonu, and boldly walked on the Çatak Canyon Glass Viewing Terrace Among the places we visited in Europe, we have fond memories of free-spirited cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Erfurt, Frankfurt, and Wiesbaden—the city from which we reported on the GTM Germany Travel Mart, the leading sales event for inbound tourism to Germany. 13

LEADER OF DISCOVERY CHANNEL AND EXPLORERS CLUB’S FIELD EXPEDITION

THE FIRST MOSTAR RESIDENT TO COMPLETE EVERESTING

Andrej Gajić, Bosnian-Herzegovinian ichthyologist, the first and highly successful shark scientist in our country, received a research grant from renowned US-based Discovery Channel and Explorers Club. As part of the “Plastic Sharks” expedition he leads, he will study the effects of (micro)plastics on sharks and rays in the Mediterranean Sea, including, of course, the Adriatic Sea. The expedition will set off into the Adriatic Sea on a scientific mission to study how human plastic waste works its way up the food chain and into the ocean’s top carnivores.

Twenty-two year-old Sanjin Memić from Mostar completed the Everesting challenge, i.e. he climbed the equivalent height of Mount Everest by cycling 224 kilometres up and down Fortica hill in 26 hours. Everesting is an activity in which cyclists ascend and descend a hill anywhere in the world multiple times until they reach 8,848 metres—the equivalent height of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain located in Asia. So far, only 13,189 people have completed the challenge, and only 10 of them are from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sanjin’s challenge will be officially added to the “Hall of Fame” on the Everesting website.

DIN-AMMAR TOLJ

IGOR PASPALJ

Osim matematike, voli i fiziku.

IGOR PASPALJ

MATEMATIČKI GENIJE IZ SARAJEVA

NAJBOLJI GITARISTA SVIJETA ZA 2020.

MATHEMATICS GENIUS FROM SARAJEVO

GUITARIST OF THE YEAR 2020

Eighteen year-old Din-Ammar Tolj from Sarajevo placed first in state mathematics competition in Great Britain and won a Gold Certificate. This award is the crown of his success thus far. His accomplishments date back to his primary school days, from state competitions to the Silver Certificate he won in last year’s mathematics competition for British secondary school students and this year’s Gold Certificate. Tolj is one of the best students of the Second Secondary Grammar School in Sarajevo. He received a scholarship two years ago to continue his education at the prestigious “Brentwood School” in London. Apart from mathematics, he also loves physics.

Igor Paspalj from Prijedor is the guitarist of the year 2020. Guitar World, the prestigious American monthly music magazine for guitarists, crowned Paspalj as the winner explaining that with a playing style fuelled by a strong mix of virtuoso influences, he displayed exceptional instrumental dominance, which is why he won this award. His performance was wrought with bluesy cleans, sweep- and alternate picking-laden shred, and just about everything a modern guitar player can throw at the instrument. Paspalj will receive a feature in “Guitar World”, both in print and online, and record a professionally shot performance video. He also got a PRS S2 McCarty 594, a workhorse electric guitar, worth 1,700 US dollars. 19

NICOLA MINASI, ambasador Italije u BiH

Otkrivanje novih zemalja

izuzetan je luksuz “NIŠTA MI NE NEDOSTAJE OVDJE, POSEBNO OD KADA SAM OTKRIO AJVAR!” Razgovarala: Elma Zećo / Foto: Tesnim Karišik

S

- Zaista mnogo toga.

POČEO SAM SKIJATI NA BJELAŠNICI I JAHORINI Koja mjesta u BiH biste preporučili svim italijanskim turistima da obavezno posjete kada dođu? - Pored Sarajeva i Mostara, mnogo volim Počitelj i Vlašić. Nije važno samo mjesto, nego i osjećaj – uživati u dobrim ljudima i dobrim stvarima, ljepoti zemlje, bogatstvu kulture i ukusu hrane.

No, također sam počeo skijati na Jahorini i Bjelašnici. Ukratko, BiH je zaista veoma obogatila moj odmor!

SOLIDARNOST, ODGOVORNOST I ČOVJEČNOST Čime ste najviše učinili Vašu porodicu ponosnom?

stvo pokazati moju novu domovinu porodici i prijateljima.

NICOLA MINASI, Ambassador of Italy to B&H

Discovering New Countries

is an Incredible Luxury “I DON’T THINK THERE’S ANYTHING MISSING IN MY LIFE HERE, ESPECIALLY SINCE I DISCOVERED AJVAR!” Interviewed by: Elma Zećo / Photo: Tesnim Karišik

M

oving into diplomacy 21 years ago was a dream come true for Nicola Minasi, the Ambassador of Italy to Bosnia and Herzegovina, because he always wanted to be a diplomat and serve his country. He is particularly pleased to use his diplomatic powers to build good relations between B&H and Italy and

create positive values for the citizens and friends of the country he serves in.

OUR BOND IS OLD AND RUNS DEEP What were your expectations when you assumed the position of Ambassador of Italy to B&H? How close are you to achieving your goals?

- The mission to B&H came as a surprise for me, because I was supposed to go to another country. Right from the start, I believed it was important to listen to be able to understand what all the parties involved thought, creating opportunities in the meantime to bring people together to discuss things in order to reconcile differing opinions. 23

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

I think the Italian Embassy has been able to offer new ideas to that effect in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Which areas of cooperation between Italy and B&H are particularly successful? - Many people don’t even realise just how excellent the relations between Italy and B&H are because they think it’s only natural to nurture such relations. Italy is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second largest trade partner, our firms employ 12.000 workers, and our mutual bond is old and runs deep. The first Consulate General of Italy in Sarajevo was established in back in 1863 in the Ottoman period. More importantly, Italian society values B&H very highly and has always been very supportive, both in difficult and good times. Italy is the only country which has lost its volunteers to all sides during the war, and it’s also the only country which regularly brings its pupils and students to B&H to learn about its history. Nowadays, Srebrenica Memorial Centre is most commonly frequented by Italian visitors, and Italian non-governmental organisations, silently and efficiently, still actively operate throughout the country. What is it about us that reminds you of Italy? - A lot, actually. I believe that the greatest similarity between us is the habit to think about what to say and do in public for social reasons, on one hand, and on the other hand about what really matters in our personal lives—our family, our loved ones and our values and how to protect them from the environment that isn’t always ideal due to social or even political pressures. The truth is, this allows you to recognise the people who genuinely appreciate and support the things that matter. That’s why we understand each other really well—Italians and Bosnians and Herzegovinians. Do you feel there’s something missing in your life on a daily basis? 24

- Honestly, no. Maybe just the feeling that I could easily travel if I wanted to, so I could, for instance, be at the seaside in no time. I don’t think there’s anything missing in my life here though. Especially since I discovered ajvar!

I STARTED SKIING IN BJELAŠNICA AND JAHORINA MOUNTAINS What are the must-visit places in B&H? What recommendations would you give to Italian tourists? - In addition to Sarajevo and Mostar, I love Počitelj and Vlašić. It’s not the place, though, it’s the feeling—enjoying the company of kind-hearted people and the good things: gorgeous landscapes, rich culture and tasty food. Many Italians regularly visit B&H for that reason alone—to enjoy the atmosphere without the need to see anything in particular. Apart from all the popular destinations in Italy, is there a lesser-known place worth visiting?

gives me a sense of equality because I see people from different cultures in the Adriatic area mixing together. But, I started skiing in Jahorina and Bjelašnica mountains too. In short, B&H has really enriched my holidays!

SOLIDARITY, RESPONSIBILITY AND HUMANITY What do you think your family is most proud of about you? - I believe I did something interesting in all the countries I served in, and I’m

work, have meetings, read and respond to hundreds of emails… and then, as the day would draw to a close, I’d have official dinner receptions almost every day. I’d rest only on weekends. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, I haven’t been very physically active, but my rhythm has changed. In a sense, we’ve accomplished more than before! For example, we started airing radio shows every week, introduced Italian TV series and films on TV, rolled out new Italian language courses in schools, and organised a series of online events gathering several hundred people. Not bad given the current situation. In your opinion, what are the most uplifting thoughts to start the day? - For me, the start of the day is the best time to come up with new ideas and make plans. I love it when something new and unexpected, something that brings value to future projects, comes to mind.

“Italy is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s

TREĆI SVIJET

KUGA I PANDEMIJA KULTURNA PSIHOLOGIJA VJEROVANJA DA ĆE SE DOGODITI LOŠE STVARI, ALI DA ĆE ŽIVOT IĆI DALJE, MOŽDA BOLJE PRIPREMA LJUDE NA BALKANU NA PODNOŠENJE POTEŠKOĆA I IZNENADNIH KATASTROFA NEGO BILO KOJA DRUGA KULTURA NA ZEMLJI

I

tokom perioda kolonizacije i potčinjavanja, uprkos najboljim naporima osvajača i kolonijalnih upravitelja.

THE THIRD WORLD

The Plague and the Pandemic THE CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY OF BELIEVING THAT BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN, BUT THAT LIFE WILL GO ON, PERHAPS BETTER PREPARES THE BALKAN PEOPLE TO HANDLE HARDSHIP AND SUDDEN CATASTROPHE THAN ANY OTHER CULTURE ON EARTH.

A

lthough the Third World is used now as a derogatory term, the phrase was actually coined to describe the nations of the world who refused to follow the narrative of the Cold War, refusing to be subservient client states to either the Soviet Union in the East or the United States in the West. These nations were characterized by a stoic resolve gained by years of perseverance and a willingness to face enormous odds, even if that meant facing those odds alone. Third World nations had enormous pride in their ability to overcome hardships while holding onto their independence and unique cultures,

cultures which had been retained even during periods of colonization and subjugation despite the best efforts of invaders and colonial administrators. In few examples is the indomitable Third World spirit as evident as the vastly different manner in which their citizens have approached pandemics compared to the rest of the world. Stoic and purposeful, pandemics in the Balkans have often led to cultural flowering and a communal spirit to weather hardship together. The cultural psychology of believing that bad things will happen, but life will go on perhaps better prepares the Balkan people to handle har-

dship and sudden catastrophe than any other culture on earth. In 165 AD Roman military forces were returning victorious from Seleucia, near what is now Baghdad in Iraq. They did not, however, return alone. Along with the soldiers was a new disease - one the marching troops would spread throughout the empire on their trek home. It was a disease that would crop up in outbreaks for the next forty years, killing two emperors and decimating the mighty Roman army. There are two legends about how this new plague was unleashed upon the world. In the first the Ro29

The government of Yugoslavia acted quickly and decisively. By 16 March martial law was declared and intense contact tracing began, along with lockdowns and hotels requisitioned for quarantines. Borders were closed, all nonessential travel was banned. man General Lucius Verus, co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius, opened a forbidden tomb, thus unleashing the plague upon the world as a punishment for breaking his vow not to sack the city of Seleucia. In the second legend the plague was unleashed by a Roman soldier, who opened a casket in the Temple of Apollo in a blurry reflection of the myth of Pandora’s Box. Those marching troops brought the new plague with them as they marched north, trampling a path right through the Balkans on Roman roads that have left surviving bits and pieces in various places in Bosnia and Herzegovina at places like Gračine and Mogorjelo. And so the Antonine Plague, believed by many to have been the first incidence of smallpox, entered Europe from the Roman frontier of the Balkans. Records are incredibly sparse for the plague - most especially in Dalmatia, Pannonia, Moesia, and Illyricum - much of the modern Balkans. We know that at one point 2000 people per day in Rome were dying, but historians have had to be creative in analyzing the plague’s effects on frontier areas. The task has been difficult, but not impossible; using 30

land records, military retirement records, the records of mines that closed and opened, mass graves, and evidence of rapid depopulation historians have been able to slowly piece together the story. With these techniques some modern scholars have been able to estimate the losses to the Roman military at 1015%, devastating for the entire empire, but affecting areas dependent on military forts and large numbers of retired legionnaires even more severely. The plague killed Emperor Lucius Verus early on in 169 AD, and was the most likely cause of death of the great Emperor Marcus Aurelius himself in March 180. Officially he is said to have died near the modern city of Vienna, but there is evidence he may have actually died in Sirmium - now the Serbian city of Sremska Mitrovica. “Do not act as if you had ten thousand years to throw away. Death stands at your elbow. Be good for something while you live and it is in your power,” Marcus Aurelius, in his Meditations. The depopulation caused by the Antonine Plague was the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire in the Balkans, combined with later raids by Magyars and Avars, leaving

vast swathes of fertile and rich land empty for the Slavs to settle. Just as smallpox entered into Europe through the Balkans, they were the site of the last outbreak of smallpox in Europe as well. In February 1972 a traveler returning from the Middle East contracted the disease and began to show symptoms on his return home to Đakovica. Due to a strong vaccination program, most of Yugoslavia had been vaccinated and the nation had not seen a case of the disease since 1930. In fact, the initial patient recovered quickly and without having been diagnosed with smallpox, likely because he had been vaccinated two months earlier. Doctors did not even initially consider a smallpox diagnosis. But the disease was already spreading. Within two weeks, on 2 March, another man presented with smallpox at a local hospital. He died, but not before directly infecting 38 people. The government of Yugoslavia acted quickly and decisively. By 16 March martial law was declared and intense contact tracing began, along with lockdowns and hotels requisitioned for quarantines. Borders were closed, all nonessential travel was banned. By 20 March the govern-

living in a time of plague with their signature stoicism and a flowering of culture. The city was rebuilt at this time; mosques, libraries, and schools rose, and some of the cities’ greatest thinkers emerged even as plague raged. Mulla Mustafa Basheski kept a diary of those years and noted that during one of the plague outbreaks 8,000 people died. At first there were just two or three plague deaths But after one month the fatalities greatly grew At first many Vratnik girls died of the plague

And many children died of the plague Although there were great numbers dead of the 18th century plagues, Sarajevans did what they do best - carry on. The few plague graves at Careva Dzamija are the only symbols left of that time, in dramatic contrast to the pervasive memento mori throughout western Europe. In fact, the great historic plagues of the Balkans have largely passed out of collective memory, unable to continue to compete with the more celebrated poetry, philosophy, and culture that grew out of hardship.

ment realized that they were dealing with an outbreak of smallpox and a massive revaccination effort of the entire Yugoslav population began. By mid-May 1972 the disease was eradicated, and Yugoslavia received international praise for its quick and effective action. Smallpox, however, was not the only plague that ravaged the Balkans. The eighteenth century, after the 1697 sacking of Sarajevo by Eugene of Savoy, saw multiple plagues ravage the city. Graves of some of the plague victims, like the children Muhammed and Nefisa, can still be seen today at Careva Dzamija. As with past (and future) pandemics, however, Bosnians then dealt with the uncertainty of

da 2021. skinemo maske, ali sve moguće maske “SVI SE MI U ŽIVOTNIM ISKUŠENJIMA, ILI SUOČENI S NEPRAVDOM, PONEKAD ZAPITAMO ZAŠTO SAM ‘OBRAZ’, A NE ‘ĐON’. OBRAZ SAM, JER SE VOLIM SMIJATI, A NE GAZITI.” Razgovarala: Elma Zećo / Foto: Dnevni list Oslobođenje i privatni album

elevizijskim novinarstvom plovi već 20 godina. To je ona, njena svakodnevnica, posao, dio života, navika, ljubav, a sve dok se bude osjećala sretnom, put kojim kroči preko dvadeset godina neće mijenjati. 38

Nadograđujući znanje i vještine uz uvažavanje drugog, drugačijeg. No, vrijeme uvijek najbolje istisne u prve redove.

“Najveći i najpozitivniji utisak na mene ostavljaju ponizni i skromni ljudi, često nesvjesni svoje i veličine svojih dijela” vremenu i okruženju odgojiti dijete kada opasnost vreba iza svakoga ćoška, veoma dobro znaju svi roditelji.

la i definirala Vašu životnu filozofiju?

- Ponajviše genetika, jer nisam baš fun tjelovježbi i fitnesa, a uz to sam i veliki gurman.

he has been a TV journalist for the past 20 years. That is who she is, her day-to-day life, her job, a part of her life, a habit, something she loves to do, and as long as she is happy, she will stay on the road she has been on for more than twenty years.

ORDINARY PEOPLE ON A GREAT MISSION You’ve had a chance to meet people from different walks of life. What kind of people impress you the most?

- People who make the best and most positive impression on me are those who are humble and unpretentious, very often unaware of how great they are and how great their deeds are. Ordinary people on a great mission to change their micro-world for the better by setting a good example to others. I’m afraid of pretentious people who strive to achieve the one and only ambition they’ve got without stopping for a minute to appreciate anything or anyone but themselves. I avoid people who idealise themselves and think they can get away with anything, people who have no compassion or empathy, people who are driven by ambition alone. How does one build their professional image in your opinion? - With patience, consistently, slowly, step by step. By improving one’s knowledge and brushing up one’s skills along with respecting other people, people who are different. It takes years to build a good and professional image. One could lose it in a split second just like an athlete who spent years training re-

ally hard, kept having good results and then, because of a single bad performance or match, becomes infamous and is put on a pedestal of shame and anger. It’s not fair, but that’s the world and the time we live in. One’s got to deal with it. What kind of relationship do you have with younger co-workers, and what has helped you most to mature as a journalist? - To be brief and specific, I haven’t been presumptuous in my own professional growth, and I don’t impose on my co-workers either, but if I see that they need help or if they seek help, advice or support, I’m always happy to help. I’ve never liked being ‘bossed around’ and ‘preached at’. I kept a low profile and watched from the side, learned from the best, and knowing they had good intentions, I always sought advice from people who’d actually help me and not laugh at me. There are some wonderful people in every generation deserving of their place in the profession, but there are also those who are less talented. Time, however, always brings the best talents to the forefront.. 41

INTERVJU / INTERVIEW

UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT, LOVE AND PROTECTION

What kind of feelings and experiences have helped you define your life philosophy?

You’re Leon’s mother, and he’s turned your life around. What parenting techniques do you use and what’s the most important thing for you as a parent?

- Philosophy is directly linked to my upbringing and the things my parents taught me. Being a good person is the most important achievement of all. If you’re a good person, good things will come to you—good deeds, joy, happiness and laughter. It’s not always easy to follow this philosophy, particularly not when you live in a world of injustice and hypocrisy. In the face of injustice or a challenging situation, we all sometimes ask ourselves: “Why am I a goody two shoes and not a bad person instead?” I’m a goody two shoes, because I like laughing and dislike trampling on people.

- The most important thing for me as a parent, but for any parent really, is for my son Leon to be a healthy and happy child who will grow to become a decent and kind-hearted man who appreciates both himself and other people. Any parent knows all too well just how challenging it is to raise a child in this day and age when there are dangers hidden around every corner. At times when I get excited in an idealised world, I turn to the much-vaunted Scandinavian parenting model, but when I realise that all hell is breaking loose around me and that the boundaries between child and parent aren’t there any more, I go back to the model with clearly defined boundaries, rules, responsibilities, rights and obligations, and appropriate punishments. I respect Leon’s character traits; he’s a very energetic and active child, but giving too much freedom to a child who then calls too many shots can escalate into anarchy fairly quickly, and I wouldn’t want that as a parent. You lost both of your parents at a young age. Have you got any fond memories of them that you’d like to share? - My mum passed away in my early twenties, and a few years later I lost my dad too. Upon realising that they were gone, I felt completely alone in this world. It’s difficult to describe what it feels like to know that they’ll never give you a hug or kiss you again. When parents are gone, the only unconditional support, love and protection is also gone. You come to see that your mum won’t be there to make the best birthday cake for you, take your temperature to check for a fever a hundred times when you 42

I DO PLAY A LOT Whose literary work sings to your soul?

“People who make the best and most positive impression on me are those who are humble and unpretentious, very often unaware of how great they are and how great their deeds are” are sick, or bring you the best soup there is to make you feel better ever again. Your father won’t be there to say: “You can do it, lass!” or “They better not try to bother you.” Christmas doesn’t smell the same any more, and it’ll never smell the same again. There’s a huge emotional void in your life, but you learn to live with it. Over the years, I’ve been filling this void inside of me with feelings and with pride because I had them and because they were who they were—the world’s best mum and dad. I feel better because I know I didn’t disappoint them, and I strongly believe that they’d be proud of who I’ve become.

- In the past few years, mostly the good and the bad work of Leon Mak Veljović [laughs]. Unfortunately, I really don’t have much time to read, but I do play a lot. I wouldn’t mind some light reading. I believe I made myself a promise, or, to be frank, I expressed a hope to finally bring a book after my own heart when I go to the beach next summer. What helps you to stay slim? - Genes mostly, because I’m not much of a fan of exercise and fitness, but I am a big fan of gourmet food. I’ve been trying lately to compensate it by walking briskly. I make it a point to walk for at least 5 to 10 kilometres daily. It feels so good and I feel much better. I think I’ll keep at it and keep a proper diet that’s not too extreme or overly stringent. What do you wish for in 2021? - It’s really been a difficult year, so my wishes are simple and quite humble. I’d just like next year to be better than 2020. I’d like us to stay healthy and take off our masks, all kinds of masks, and to finally breathe freely and healthily.”

CRKVA PRESVETOG TROJSTVA

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY

A Breath of Dalmatia in Sarajevo

IN SARAJEVO’S DOLACMALTA NEIGHBOURHOOD, THE BEAUTY OF THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY, BUILT IN THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN PERIOD, HAS BEEN CAPTURING PEOPLE’S ATTENTION FOR OVER A HUNDRED YEARS. PARISH IN A WORKERS’ NEIGHBOURHOOD The idea to build a parish church in today’s New Sarajevo Municipality was brought about by Josip Štadler, the first Archbishop of Vrhbosna, at the end of the 19th century. He knew that the city was expanding, that workers, predominantly of the Catholic faith, were taking up residence in the city, and that they also needed religious guidance since they would live in this part of the city where the Parish of the Holy Trinity had already been established. The parish had been established in a worker’s neighbourhood with railway workshops and wood processing plants. Archbishop Štadler himself purchased the land in Kolodvorska Street from one Malešević, along with a house that was later converted into the vicarage, investing a large portion of his own money into it. In 1905, when the Archbishop finally decided to build a parish church, the acclaimed Hungarian architect Josip Vancaš produced a design for the church. At the time, Vancaš was the official architect and advisor to 46

the Archdiocese of Vrhbosna, and he was commissioned to design all the buildings the Roman Catholic Church built in this period. A regulatory plan was also drawn up for the church and its immediate surroundings, planning a spacious square in front of it, very much like the one in front of the Cathedral in Sarajevo.

STYLISTIC MODELS Stylistic models for the design could perhaps be found in Dalmatian and Italian Romanesque architecture, with its characteristic polychrome effect in stone by using two types of stone of different colours, such as the alternating bands of pink and white stone used to build the Romanesque cathedral on the island of Rab. This architecture is a variation of the Mediterranean Romanesque of Dalmatia, with its distinct cubic forms and body of the church, with sharp edges, flat and rounded surfaces, strong masses and the strongly-accentuated architectonics of the frontispieces… Horvath and Scheidig Construction Company started and completed the construction work in the Romano-Gothic architectural style featuring Secessionist stained windows and interior design features.

INTERIOR DESIGN FEATURES Renowned artists left their mark on the interior of the Church of the Holy Trinity. Even though the original murals have not survived, we know for a fact that following the construction of the church distinguished artist Carl Richter painted its interior. The high altar, a combination of the finest white Dalmatian and pinkish Sarajevo marble, was made by Anton Lušina, the Sarajevo-based sculptor. The smaller altar niches contain sculptures of St. Augustine and St. Joseph, the work of the Zagreb-based sculptor Dragan Morak, whose work is also on display in Sarajevo’s Sacred Heart Cathedral. The side altars and pulpit were made by the Tyrolean firm of Ferdinand Stuflesser, whereas two confessionals and the pews on either side of the entrance to the church were by Venturini & Butazzoni Wood Company. The painting of the Holy Trinityin the church was named after, which hangs above the altar, was painted by the Croatian artist Oton Iveković. The stone baptistery was made by the Sarajevo-based artist Ivan Dolžan, while the Way

of the Cross was made of terracotta by the Sarajevo-based Franciscan Nikola Momčinović in 1907.

NATIONAL MONUMENT OF B&H Ivan Šarić, Canon and future Archbishop of Vrhbosna, lay the foundation stone for the church on 14 May 1905. After the construction work was completed, the church was consecrated on 18 November 1906. A decision on proclaiming the church a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina was enacted in 2009. The church that most closely resembles the Church of the Holy Trinity in Sarajevo is St. Elijah’s Church in Bosanski Brod, built a year later, in 1907.

HOW TO GET THERE? The church is located next to the BH Postal Services and BH Telecom building in Sarajevo's Dolac-Malta neighbourhood. You can see it from the main city road, Zmaja od Bosne Street. Trams pass along this street and the main entrance to the church is on it. The church is open to visit every day. No reservation needed.

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

AUGUST I MARIJA BRAUN

PREDSTAVLJAMO / INTRODUCING

ZNAČAJNA PODRŠKA EVROPSKE UNIJE

Oživljavanje

turizma u BiH KROZ PODRŠKU NOVIM INICIJATIVAMA, EVROPSKA UNIJA VEĆ JE PRUŽILA ZNAČAJNU PODRŠKU ZA UBLAŽAVANJE NEGATIVNIH UTJECAJA PANDEMIJE NA TURIZAM, TE ZA STRATEŠKO USMJERAVANJE SEKTORA. NAJBOLJI PRIMJER JE JEDAN OD VODEĆIH PROGRAMA EVROPSKE UNIJE – EU4BUSINESS.

O

vaj program podržava turistička partnerstva kroz svoju komponentu bespovratnih sredstava u vrijednosti od preko 1,5 miliona eura s ciljem podrške turističkim proizvodima, pristup međunarodnim tržištima i korištenje najnovijih ICT alata u turizmu.

SIGNIFICANT EU SUPPORT

Revival of tourism in B&H THROUGH SUPPORT FOR NEW INITIATIVES, THE EUROPEAN UNION HAS PROVIDED SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT TOWARDS MITIGATING THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC ON TOURISM AND STRATEGICALLY STEERING THE SECTOR IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE BEST EXAMPLE IS ONE OF THE EU’S FLAGSHIP PROGRAMMES, EU4BUSINESS.

T

his programme supports tourism partnerships through its grant component worth over €1.5 million aiming to support tourism products, access to international markets and utilisation of the newest ICT tools in tourism. In addition, the EU plans to provide certain grants for COVID-19 recovery of SMEs in the tourism sector.

HEAD OF EU DELEGATION TO B&H AND EU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE IN B&H, AMBASSADOR JOHANN SATTLER “Saving jobs in tourism and creating new ones is among the main priorities of the EU’s assistance for B&H’s overall economic recovery from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have already started with short-term activities to support the tourism sector’s “reset” in 2021, including through providing grant fun-

ding for tourism partnerships. The EU is also ready to provide more substantial support, however, serious progress cannot be achieved without a strategic approach and proper planning at the country level, which means the adoption of a strategic framework. During this year, I had the chance to meet and speak to tourism associations and the business community to hear their feedback on the challenges they face. It is important to stress that the private sector needs to be better included in formulating policies through a structured dialogue, while the pandemic pointed afresh to certain systemic issues that result in discouraging investments in B&H. These are issues that the authorities need to start tackling urgently, and the EU is ready to help. Next year, we are planning a donors’ conference in order to promote investments and prospective policy developments in B&H tourism.” 53

Kolibe u kojima možete osjetiti autentičnost planinskog života i uz topli napitak uživati u zimskoj idili dok vatra pucketa u kaminu možete posjetiti na Bijelim Vodama, u Umoljanima, Sinanovićima, Ledićima itd. Vaši mališani se tu mogu bezbrižno sankati i praviti Snješka, dok vi pijete čaj i uživate u tišini i ljepoti prirode!

No, tada oni zapravo posebnu priču kazuju...

AUTHENTIC TASTE OF MOUNTAIN LIFE You may think that villages in Mount Bjelašnica are densely covered in snow and that they have plunged into a long winter sleep, after just one visit you will realise that it is not true. Roads are regularly maintained and kept in a passable condition in the winter months. Heading out to picturesque villages will take you back to a time long past. In Bijele Vode, Umoljani, Sinanovići, Ledići and other villages you can visit one

of the cottages offering an authentic taste of mountain life and enjoy the winter idyll over a cup of warm drink while the fire crackles in the fireplace. You can stay at one of the local villagers offering private accommodation, truly rest for a while and enjoy the winter wonderland. You will wake up to the light of the mountain feeling eager to go outside and enjoy the winter fun, but not before you have had your first morning coffee and breakfast. Your little ones can go sledding freely and make a snowman while you sip your tea and

savour the magnificent nature that surrounds you! Make sure you take a walk through the villages, visit the sites worth exploring, buy the local products—from eggs and cheese to woollen socks and pullovers—and, on your way back, wrap up your perfect day up in the mountain by stopping by to eat a warm broth.

SKIING IN MOUNT BJELAŠNICA If you want to ski at a place where ski legends themselves have competed in alpine skiing, then you do 65

ADRENALINE-BOOSTING ADVENTURE There are not enough days in a weekend or holiday for you to see and explore everything Trnovo has to offer. But, if you really want to cherish the time you spent in the vicinity of Trnovo for a long time, then you have got to have an adrenaline adventure. Going on a quad tour or zip line adventure in Mount Bjelašnica and Javorov Do is a unique way to explore the mountains, and a great idea if you want to have fun.

not want to miss out on sliding down the slopes of Mount Bjelašnica. Regardless of whether you are an excellent or a less than skilled skier, the slopes of Mount Bjelašnica are suitable for beginners, families with children and those wishing to learn to ski. It is particularly appealing to ski at night as the slopes are lit for night skiing. Cold mountain air will make you even more tired so you will sleep “like a baby” in one of the luxurious hotels in Babin Do or in private lodging facilities offering complimentary Wi-Fi, TV and other amenities.

SLEDDING IN MOUNT IGMAN Sledding is an all-time favourite winter activity for any child, and Veliko polje (Large Field) in Mount Igman echoes with laughter and joy of hundreds of children gathering around in this Olympic mountain in large numbers. Igman is an aerial spa, so it is the place to go to escape the smog and city pollution. Also, since Igman is so large, there is enough room for everyone. It is particularly suitable for parents who can walk around pushing their toddlers in a pram. Apart from Ve-

liko polje, one can go sledding and skiing in Malo polje (Small Field) too. A special attraction in Malo polje is the former Olympic ski jumping platform.

FROZEN KINGDOM If you ask them, many hikers will tell you that they prefer heading out into the mountains in winter because that is the way to truly discover what mountains are really about, and see how truly strong and beautiful they really are. You will also be at a loss of words at the sight of the frozen Studeni potok (Cold Stream) and the legend of the Dragon that you will hear about if you visit the Bjelašnica valley the stream sits in. You can reach it by passing through Gradina and the village of Umoljani. You can feel the priceless, calm atmosphere at Husremovac Nature Park situated just outside of the village of Dejčići. You will not be able to take your eyes off the Ledići Waterfall, Husrembegova vrela (two natural springs), and Senabot Spring in their winter attire. More experienced hikers will find it challenging to go for a hike to the Great Lakes in Mount Treskavica but frozen lake surfaces mirroring ice-capped mountain tops will make any effort worth their while.

STONE SLEEPERS WRAPPED UP IN SNOW Medieval tombstones scattered across the slopes of Mount Bjelašnica tell the most wonderful stories of its past. Wrapped up in snow, they truly seem to be hibernating. However, that is when they are actually telling a special story… Look for the necropolises in Šabići, Umoljani and Ledići villages, stop for a moment next to them and listen to the story of what life was like in the Middle Ages!

AROMA OF BOSNIANSTYLE PIES AND FRITTERS In winter, people around here eat warm fritters with cheese and cured and smoked beef, as well as traditional home-made Bosnian-style pies and broths, to give them strength to spend time out in the cold, to refresh their body and to lift their spirits. The aroma of these dishes will tempt you into one of the many catering establishments up in the mountains that only serve home-made dishes made almost entirely of locally produced food. You will get to see for yourself that a great deal of love and skill is put into it. 67

Those Sarajevans who can recall their parents’ or grandparents’ stories of just how lively the Olympic mountain in the immediate vicinity of Sarajevo used to be will be happy to know that Mount Trebević has restored its former pride and glory. Just like back in the day, the little ones can once again go sledding from the upper station of the Trebević cable car towards Čolina kapa. And if you go to Trebević by cable car, the little ones will love it. Show them the former viewing deck whose renovation will put new shine on the old building, walk along the education path and show them the bobsleigh where the most courageous Olympic competitors used to race down.

RAVNA PLANINA

RAVNA PLANINA

Year after year, a growing number of people are visiting Ravna planina (Flat Mountain) situated just outside of the town of Pale. This modern tourist centre was designed to offer something for everyone, including a designated sledding slope you can access from the “Gondola” ski lift’s exit station, i.e. at the top of the mountain. All sledding enthusiasts can use the slope, both adults and children, as it is open from 9 am to 4 pm every day. It feels quite special to use the gondola lift to get to the top of the mountain and then go sledding or walking along the lake offering stunning views of Pale and Sarajevo and of the nearby Jahorina and Romanija mountains.

Any paediatrician would recommend you to take your little ones outside to breathe the clean air and get some sun in the winter season particularly if you live in an area affected by air pollution. Spending time up in the mountains will improve your and your children’s health, boost your children’s immunity and improve their blood quality.

KLADANJ Each winter seasons, winter sport enthusiasts in the Tuzla Canton love to frequent Mount Konjuh and Kladanj, a small town sitting in the valley of the Drinjača River; the town centre is less than a kilometre drive away from the renowned “Karaula” ski resort. As of last year, there is a designated ski slope for the little ones, so “Karaula” has become a gathering place for those who have yet to learn to ski. They are sure to spend unforgettable and carefree time on weekends and holidays filled with joy and happiness. 73

Renowned Stovrela Motel, where you can take a break and treat yourself to some of the area’s culinary specialties, is nearby. and entering the Bijambare Cave. The cave is warmer than its location in winter. Its interior is full of stalactite and stalagmite formations the little ones will be overjoyed to see. Show them the medieval tombstone necropolis, the medieval treasure of our homeland.

KUPRES If you want to take sledding up a notch and make it even more for the little ones, then make sure to visit the slopes of Mount Stožer and the popular Kupres Snow Park. MOUNT KOZARA

BOSNA I HERCEGOVINA / BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

1. ŠEST STOLJEĆA POSTOJANJA

1. SIX CENTURIES OF EXISTENCE

Svake godine na Dan grada turistički i planinarski vodič Afan Abazović organizira „Zeničku turu“ besplatno upoznajući turiste i Zeničane s najvećim atrakcijama grada.

The earliest reference to Zenica dates back to the time of the Dubrovnik Republic and the edict issued by Croatian-Hungarian King Béla IV on 20 March 1436. This day is now celebrated as City Day. Even though the area around Zenica was first mentioned in the 5th century, it was inhabited as early as the Neolithic Age as reflected in the multitude of archaeological remains within its immediate vicinity. Throughout history, in written records Zenica was referred to as Bistua Nuova, Bilino polje, Brod, Zenica, and Bzenica. Every year at City Day, tour and mountain guide Afan Abazvić organises the “Zenica Tour” introducing tourists and the people of Zenica to the city’s top attractions.

2. CITY OF STEEL For more than a hundred years, the widely known Steel Factory, thanks to which the city was built and its people fed, has been its symbol. It was constructed in autumn 1892, during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, because of the railway line passing through Zenica and because of a significant quantity of coal the area abo-

unded in. After the Second World War, production at the Steel Factory flourished. Zenica was built in the Socialist spirit which left an indelible mark on city architecture making Zenica’s cityscape most recognisable for its Socialist architectural features. Despite tremendous changes that have occurred in the meantime, the people of Zenica still cherish the spirit of worker solidarity and the sense of aesthetics, tradition, humour and a positive attitude.

3. CITY'S OLDEST CAKE SHOP In the heart of the old city quarter, you must try the traditional winter drink called salep which is produced in “Jabuka”, one of Zenica’s oldest cake shops, dating back over one hundred years ago. Renowned Mima’s Cake Shop is the place to go to sample traditional Bosnian cakes, as well as boza and tahan halva.

4. VRATA BOSNE

4. THE GATES OF BOSNIA

Stoljetnu kapiju Zenice – srednjovjekovne bedeme i tvrđavu starog grada Vranduka nazivaju još i „vratima Bosne“.

Centuries-old gates of Zenica—the medieval ramparts and the old Town of Vranduk’s Castle—are also called the “Gates of Bosnia”. The city, built on a steep rock above the gorge of the Bosnia River, was originally meant to protect members of the ruling class, bans at first and then kings as well. It was the only unconquered castle during the bloody raid on Bosnia by Austrian field marshal Eugene of Savoy. Today, you can explore the remains of the Medieval and the Ottoman periods in Bosnia—the items that were processed and put on display as part of two museum collections, visit Sultan Fatih Mosque, and sample a rather well-known local dish called potkriža made by skilled housewives of the Vranduk area.

Paunovi, fazani, guske, konji, poniji, jarići, kokoške, zečevi i druge životinje oduševit će i vas i vaše mališane.

5. SMETOVI When the people of Zenica crave for clean air, they typically frequent the Smetovi area lying on the outskirts of Zenica, at 1,024 metres above sea level, offering beautiful views of the city. Smetovi Tourist Centre is a picnic spot

where ski, paragliding, horse-back riding and mountain biking schools frequently deliver instruction. When visiting Smetovi, be sure to visit Amer Beganović’s mini farm with 400 animals. Both you and your children will simply love to see peacocks, pheasants, geese, horses, ponies, kids, chickens, rabbits and other animals. 79

The mountain was allegedly named after him. 8.

7. BISTRIČAK PICNIC SPOT Bistričak used to be the most popular picnic spot among the people of Zenica and its visitors. Located 25 kilometres away from Zenica, it was the place for families to go to and enjoy the natural ambiance to the sound of birds chirping and river water bubbling, to walk in the forest… There is a designated area for relaxation and recreation in Bistrčak that you can reach by taking the highway to Doboj leading to the Nemila neighbourhood (20 km) and then taking the local Bistrički potok road (5 km). 80

8. KAMBEROVIĆA POLJE In the city centre, there is a green oasis, a park which is one of Zenica’s symbols and the favourite promenade for the people of Zenica—Kamberovića polje. Apart from the wonderful promenade, Kamberovića polje features several sports grounds such as an athletic stadium, a tennis court, a volleyball court, a basketball court and a football pitch. There is a modern shopping centre nearby, and the Bilino polje Stadium, which used to be Čelik Football Club’s stadium, where the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national football team plays its home games.

9. ZABORAVLJENI JERUSALEM

9. THE FORGOTTEN JERUSALEM

Ilije Proroka i jevrejsku Sinagogu.

You can also hear people refer to Zenica as the “forgotten Jerusalem” because it is home to places of worship of the four major monotheistic religions, which have testified of the multicultural spirit and history of the city situated on the banks of the Bosnia River for several thousand years. You can walk through the city and see Sultan Ahmed’s Mosque (Čaršijska džamija), Orthodox Church of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Catholic of the Holy Prophet Elijah and Jewish Synagogue.

10. HISTORIJSKI SPOMENICI

10. HISTORIC MONUMENTS

Even though it only began to develop in the Industrial Age, there is a large number of important historical monuments in and just outside of Zenica such as the Roman graves in Janjići, Bogomil (called “krstjani”, or Christians) monasteries with medieval tombstones in the Puhovac and Pojske villages, and many other landmarks scattered across the city. The heart of Zenica is the old quarter, the former trade centre; nowadays, it is a street packed with shops and cafés. 81

GRAČANICA

Mali grad

U DOLINI RIJEKE SPREČE

"IMA GRADOVA KOJI VAS, TAKVI KAKVI SU, PODSJEĆAJU NA LJUDE - I ONO NA ŠTO ĆE VAS GRAČANICA PODSJETITI JESTE I MLADOST I STAROST NEKOG I MLADOG I STAROG BOSANCA IZ DOLINE SPREČE I NJENIH BREGOVA; I SVA JE ONA JEDAN ŠIROKO OTVOREN DOM, S DOMAĆINOM PRED KAPIJOM I AVLIJOM, DA PRIMI GOSTA. I OD SVEGA ŠTO IMA ODLOMIT ĆE I STAVITI PRED GOSTA, A NAJVIŠE OD SVOJE DUŠE - TO JEST OD ONOGA ČEGA GRAČANICA PONAJVIŠE I IMA!", ĆAMIL SIJARIĆ Autorica: Semra Hodžić

GRAČANICA

Small Town IN THE VALLEY OF THE SPREČA RIVER Author: Semra Hodžić

IN THE ENCHANTING ENVIRONMENT SURROUNDING ZVIJEZDA (STAR) MOUNTAIN, JUST OUTSIDE OF VAREŠ, WHAT SEEMS LIKE AN ORDINARY BOSNIAN VILLAGE OF OĆEVIJA AT FIRST GLANCE IS SETTLED. HOWEVER, WHEN YOU SPOT “MEJDANI” OR BLACKSMITHS’ WORKSHOPS, IT TURNS OUT THAT THIS IS THE LAST PLACE IN EUROPE WHERE IRON IS MANUFACTURED USING THE IRON MANUFACTURE METHOD DATING BACK TO THE TIMES PRIOR TO THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, I.E. JUST LIKE IN THE MIDDLE AGES, IRON IS SMELTED AND THEN SMITHED USING WATER ENERGY. KOTROMANIĆ DYNASTY’S SEAT A small town nestled in the lower valley of the Spreča River is said to have originated in the Middle Ages at the time when the town of Soko was built on a steep rock above Sokoluša Brook in the southern foothills of Mount Trebava. The medieval town of Soko lies six kilometres away from the centre of present day Gračanica, in a village bearing the same name, which used to be the largest settlement in the county, while the whole area was known for an iron ore mine. Ruins of a medieval castle tell stories to the wind of what it was like to be the seat of the Kontomanić dynasty which would later become a mining village and then a town. The earliest known 86

historical reference to Soko dates from 19 June 1449—it was the town of Duke Radivoj, one of Kontromanić dynasty’s most influential figures in the Medieval Bosnian state, and the brother of the Bosnian King Stjepan Tomaš. Soko was designated as a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Old Mosque in close proximity to Soko, which archaeologists believe was originally a feudal court, was also designated as a national monument.

ROYAL DECREE ISSUED BY SULEIMAN THE MAGNIFICENT Gračanica was known as the place where diligent tradesmen and craftsmen had gathered since ancient times, which was confirmed by a

royal decree issued by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. In 1548, during the Ottoman Empire, Gračanica had all the features of a basic urban, economic and cultural unit so it fulfilled the requirements to officially become a kasaba—a town neighbourhood. After receiving a document confirming this status, the town saw a rapid economic development in terms of service, craft and trade shops, and in 1572 it became the administrative seat of the kadiluk—a local administrative subdivision of the Ottoman empire, which was the territory of a kadi, or judge—comprising Gradačac, Sokol, Modriča, Orašje and Srebrenik counties. These historical facts speak of a continuous economic development and the entrepreneurial spirit of this municipality.

In Mara Popović’s House, members of the Association “Čračaničko keranje”, women who nurture the old traditional handcrafts—thread lace or crochet—busily crochet. The most popular item they craft is the “Srebrenica Flower” which is nowadays commonly worn on the lapel.

NINE NATIONAL MONUMENTS Nine national monuments are a great source of pride in Gračanica. One of them is the town’s most iconic symbol which adorns the town centre—the seventeenth century, 27-metre high Clock Tower. Since the tower is leaning to one side, it is also goes by the name of “the Pisa of Gračanica”. Anyone who happens to visit Gračanica is in awe of an old Bosnian house situated in the Varoš neighbourhood which is also known as Mara Popović’s House dating back to the 19th century. Even though visitors associate it with the best developed type of traditional Bosnian house, those more familiar with this architectural style will tell you that it is “an aghan country house”. Other monuments worth visiting while in Gračanica are Mula Dedino turbe (tomb) dating back to the second half of the 15th century, Osman-kapetanova medresa (ma-

drasah), Konak building or the City Hall, and within a 300-meter radius three gorgeous places of worship: Ahmed Pasha Mosque or the White Mosque which dates back to the 17th century, an Orthodox temple called the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, and a Catholic church called the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

HEALING WATERS In addition to the rich cultural and historic heritage, Gračanica boasts healing thermal and mineral waters reaching 37 degrees Celsius at their springs, and 26 to 22 degrees Celsius in pools. “Terme” spa complex is within 500 metres of the Doboj-Tuzla road. Pools in this spa have been used for treatment of various medical conditions since the 19th century and they are the reason why Gračanica is a well-known tourist destination featuring spa and recreational facilities. Pool water is also used to

obtain natural gas which is used in various industries.

VIS—THE MOST POPULAR PICNIC SPOT When the people of Gračanica go to nature, they typically frequent Vis, a picnic spot situated above Babići Village eight kilometres away from town, on the highest point of Mount Trebava. Intact nature is drawing a growing number of visitors seeking to enjoy fresh air, hunt wild animals or simply take advantage of the views from Vis and Sijedi krš rock reaching beyond three different mountains—Vlašić, Konjuh and Majevica—and the lowlands of Posavina, and all the way to the town of Brčko and Sava River. Concrete dugouts built by the former Yugoslav People’s Army and two large artificial lakes in Šemunica forest attract particular attention. In warm weather, you can play futsal and sand volleyball in Vis too. 87

ZDRAVSTVENIH KORISTI

OD ŠETNJE ZIMI

VIŠE PUTA STE SIGURNO ČITALI ILI ČULI KORISTI KOJE IMA NAŠE ZDRAVLJE OD SAMO OBIČNE ŠETNJE, NO UKOLIKO ŠETNJE PRAKTICIRATE I ZIMI ČINITE VAŠEM ZDRAVLJU DUPLU USLUGU. ŠETNJA UTJEČE NA NAŠE EMOCIJE, MENTALNO ZDRAVLJE I KOGNITIVNU FUNKCIJU, A DOPRINOSI I ODRŽAVANJU LINIJE. STRUČNJACI TVRDE DA SAMO 15 MINUTA ŠETNJE U PRIRODI SEDMIČNO IMA POZITIVAN EFEKT NA ZDRAVLJE, A ŠETNJA ZIMI DONOSI VAM VIŠESTRUKE KORISTI. VIŠE ENERGIJE

BOLJI SAN

Identičan učinak imaju i niske temperature zraka.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING IN WINTER MORE ENERGY When you expose your body to cold weather, it fills up with energy that keeps you warm for hours on end even after you come back inside. But you need to be exposed to cold weather for an extended period of time to achieve that effect.

BETTER SLEEP Sleeping in a cooler room helps you sleep better and improves your overall sleep quality, and it is particularly good for those who suffer from insomnia. If your sleep is repeatedly disrupted during the night, be sure to start walking regularly because it has a positive effect on your sleep and on your cognitive functions.

IMPROVED BRAIN FUNCTION Warm weather depletes our glucose reserves faster, and glucose provides the fuel for physiological brain function. Low blood glucose levels impact our ability to make decisions.

LOW TEMPERATURES REDUCE INFLAMMATION AND “DRIVE AWAY” INFECTION Ice treatments are frequently used to reduce swelling and ease muscle pain. Low air temperatures have the same effect. Many athletes use cryotherapy to treat muscle soreness and injury (exposing the muscles to extremely cold temperatures for several minutes to aid muscle regeneration).

STRESS RELIEF Walking can lift our mood, but it can also be a useful tool in treating depression. Physical activity stimulates the production of endorphins and helps relieve accumulated stress.

Dodati toplo mlijeko i poslužiti.

CHILI HOT CHOCOLATE Ingredients: - 2 tablespoons powdered milk - 1 scoop chilli powder - 4 tablespoons fine corn starch - 4 tablespoons granulated sugar - 4 tablespoons cacao powder - 100 g dark chocolate - pinch of ground cinnamon - tiny pinch of fine sea salt Directions: Cut the chocolate into small pieces, add all the ingredients in a jar and shake well. Meanwhile, heat two cups of milk (3 dl). Transfer a little bit of milk to a cup, and then put three large tablespoons of the jar mix in hot milk. When the milk reaches a boil, add the milk you previously set aside and stir to prevent lumps forming. Switch off the hot plate and let the mixture simmer a little, but be very careful or else it will burn. When the mixture thickens enough, remove it from the hot plate and pour into cups.

MARSHMALLOW HOT CHOCOLATE Ingredients: - a bag of Marshmallows - baking chocolate - ground or chopped biscuits - wooden sticks Directions: Melt the baking chocolate. Place marshmallows on sticks, dip them in chocolate, roll them in biscuit crumbs and them place them vertically in a cup to harden. Add warm milk and serve. Enjoy! 103
