LETTER FROM

Nicole Editor

I can’t believe I’m sitting here, writing the column for our December issue. Where has the year gone? It’s been another weird one, with COVID-19 sticking with us yet again, and while there’s no reason to believe it’s going anywhere anytime soon, there are plenty of signs that 2022 will see the return of some level of normalcy – whatever that means these days. But until then, I’m relishing in my favourite month of the year. A month filled with that little bit of extra joy. The song says, ‘it’s the most magical time of the year’ and for me, that rings so true. For most people, they have a little extra spring in their step, our homes are filled with the types of decorations we wouldn’t dream of putting up at any other time. Our Christmas tree, which has been up since the start of November, is a hot mess of home-made decorations, beautiful new ones, unevenly distributed baubles and absolutely no tinsel (hey, with five kids, we have enough to vacuum of an evening).

OPEN 7 DAYS | 9:30AM TO 5PM

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

32 Masthead Way, The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove • Ph 5577 8981

At the risk of sounding cliché, Christmas time really does shine a light on the importance of those things in life that really matter – family, friends, nature, laughter, and genuine fun. Of course, it’s not easy for everyone. There are families doing tough, people facing physical or mental health battles; there are those who have recently (or long since) lost loved ones without whom Christmas simply isn’t the same. Which is why, we owe it to ourselves, and to those who are struggling, not to sweat the small stuff. Find the joy in simple things like cooking for friends, checking out the local Christmas lights with your kids (or someone else’s), or watching a corny movie. Do things that matter too. Make time for your parents, stroke your child’s hair until they fall asleep, or call that friend you haven’t spoken to for way too long. From all of us here at Get it magazine, we wish you the happiest festive season. We hope it’s full of joy, love, laughter, and plenty of bubbles!

The most beautiful man in the

WORLD He’s been the cover star for a slew of romance novels, modelled with Andie MacDowell, appeared in the movie Zoolander, and is an ambassador for the American Cancer Society. But Fabio Lanzoni, affectionally known as Fabio, might be most famous for his appearance in the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter commercials – and that hair! Fabio caught up with Get it editor Nicole Madigan to share what he’s been up to for the past decade. What have you been up to for the past ten years? I have been doing many different things both in the entertainment industry and beyond. For the past few years, I have been working on this Aston James product launch. I am involved in all phases of the business including the formulations, product and packaging designs and advertising. It’s been a lot of work but is something I am very proud of.

You’ve become famous for a lot of things, what experience has been your favourite? There have been so many things. It would be impossible to pick any one thing. I just know that I am very blessed and very lucky.

The I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter commercials were a huge success, why do you think that is? I try to enjoy life and don’t take myself too seriously. That’s why I liked the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter commercials. They were very tongue-in-cheek and people enjoyed them.

How did your career start out? Honestly, I flew to NY on a Sunday and had an appointment with Ford Models on Monday. They sent me to a client even though they said the job was already booked out. The photographer met me and immediately decided not to use the two male models he had previously booked. That job was for a new company just about to launch in the US called The Gap and I ended up shooting in Hawaii for four weeks with Kathy Ireland and Andie MacDowell.

How did you find yourself on the cover of romance novels? It was just another job. It’s funny because I never saw the finished product because

GET IT December 2021

they would take the picture and turn it into a painting for the cover. One day I was at a club in Miami and this girl comes up to me and says that I looked just like i did on the cover of the book she was reading. I said “That is a great pick-up line” but she assured me it was true. She said she would run home to get the book. She came back with it and that was the first time I saw myself on a cover.

You’ve worked with the American Cancer Society - why is this important to you? Like I said, I have been very blessed throughout my life and it’s important to give back. Cancer is still a major threat that effects everyone in one way or another and we must fight back.

You’ve had a few cameo appearances in shows and movies, what have been your favourites? People still come up to me to ask about Zoolander or Dude Where’s My Car. It’s always a lot of fun.

How do you keep your hair looking so luscious? My top tips are: Diet: Your diet will play a big role in the health of your hair. If you are eating lots of sugar and not taking care of yourself, it often will show through the health of your hair and skin. I eat a lot of protein and I take supplements such as Biotin which is great for hair. I also get a good night’s sleep, drink plenty of water and don’t get too much sun. Conditioner: Despite what you may think, use conditioner sparingly. Just apply a bit to the bottom of your hair and then just use the residue towards the scalp. Too much conditioner will make your hair look greasy and flat

10

Appliances: Avoid hair dryers, straightening irons and other products that use heat to style your hair when you can. We all like to have styled hair, I need to use them sometimes for work too, but try to use them to a minimum and make sure you have good products to counteract the damage. There are heat protectant sprays and hair masks, these products will all help to heal your hair Spoil yourself with good quality products. Anything you put on your hair or skin gets absorbed into it so make sure you use nice products. My range Aston James uses the most effective ingredients. One thing I love about our hair products is that they use Cool menthol which not only feels fresh and smells great, but it is also great for removing dandruff build up, for regulating oil production and for having your hair get stronger. Because I like nice things, we have also made these products to look luxurious. Aston James was named to pay homage to Aston Martin and James Bond. The packaging is supposed to feel like you are opening a Rolex.

GET IT I GET THINKING

I bloody love Christmas. — by Krysten Davis —

Locally designed swimwear I love carols playing in the shops, I love the smell of my (always fresh) Christmas tree. However, said tree must not be decorated until the 1st of December- no one will ever accuse me of premature tree erection. I love marinating the fruit for my Christmas cake and the smell of brandy and raisins. We have a Christmas Eve tradition of champagne and shortbread and the kids are allowed to open one present. This year Christmas seems especially poignant. Two years into the zombie apocalypse so many things that seemed sturdy and reliable have become shaky and inconsistent. I think this is why the ritual of Christmas is so reassuring. More so than ever. I’m even looking forward to my slightly pissy Christmas afternoon nap stuffed with too much food and swimming in champagne. This year, revel in the tradition, embrace your family and friends and be unashamedly sentimental about the movies, the trimmings and the tinsel. Watch ‘Love Actually’ in your pajamas as you weep sadly for Emma Thompson and curse her bloody stupid husband. There are so many people around the world, 5 million families to be exact, who will have one less person at the end of 2021 than they had at the start of 2020. We are the absolutely the lucky country. I’ve always had a preference for even numbers and based on this incredibly trivial evidence I’m predicting the 2022 is going to be great! So go and buy some ridiculously sparkly novelty Christmas earrings and toast to the fact that we are hale and hearty and are not on the naughty list.

The spirit of Swag

Staying Waste-Conscious this Festive Season On a mission to reduce food waste and maximise food freshness for all Australians, The Swag founder Peita Pini and ambassador Natalie Bassingthwaighte talk to Get Its Holly Bartter about their collaboration, limiting household waste and celebrating mindfully this Christmas. 1. Tell us about The Swag - how did this concept and business come to life? Peita: When I had children of my own, I became more conscious of the extent of fresh food waste in my own home, and I realised I was storing my food in toxic materials, and watching them sweat. So, I set out to fix the problem. I knew nothing of online retail, manufacturing, textiles or the patent and trademarking process, but years of trial and error in my kitchen resulted in creating a design that really worked.

2. What are some key waste facts that all Australians should be aware of? •

The average Australian household throws away between $2,000 - $2500 worth of food each year (Source: FIAL

The Food and Agribusiness Growth Centre 2021)

GET IT December 2021

Christmas is the most wasteful time of the year with 90% of Aussies throwing away MORE than 25 per cent of food during the festive period.

3. How did Natalie’s ambassador collaboration come about? Peita: Nat truly represented the idea of a Swag customer – someone who understands all too well the frustration of throwing out rotting fruit and veggies every week, who is wanting to make conscious decisions, not just for herself and the planet but for her children too. Nat: Since becoming a mum, I have been so aware of how much waste our family makes collectively. I’m now making many micro changes that add up to powerful and positive impacts. From storing my produce in The Swag so that they last longer, to composting and replacing single use plastics with non-toxic reusable items, I know I’m making a difference to this planet and leaving behind a legacy I would want my children to be proud of and follow in their own way.

4. Nat, what are your 3 tips to help reduce food waste during the festive season. 1.

Before doing those big festive grocery shops, look thoroughly in your fridge and pantry for what you already have. I’ve lost count how many times I’ve 14

bought multiples because I didn’t check my pantry before I left the house - and then make your list (and check it twice, ha!). 2.

Whatever food or scraps you have leftover can always be used for something, and there really is no excuse to just throw it into your curbside bin. Make broths and soups with food scraps, make dog food (ours is always willing to scoff down any leftovers!), freeze them and finally, compost.

3.

Reusable or sustainable packaging to wrap gifts. My kids tend to make their own cards. Which is so much better for the planet but it’s also creative and so sweet! The Swags are also a great replacement for a “stocking” that you can fill with lots of goodies too.

5. If we are giving food items to loved ones, how can we reduce waste for these also? Peita: Believe it or not, you can create some pretty thoughtful gifts with leftovers. Turn coffee grounds into a body scrub, citrus rinds and dried fruits into potpourri, or left over berries into jams! In fact, we recently shared a zero waste DIY gift idea, using left over food items!

NATALIE’S FESTIVE FRENCH TOAST

Ask Dr Donna

I was given this one recently - with all the leftover stale bread and over-ripen fruit, you can make French Toast! It’s a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen and a delicious way to avoid these commonly wasted foods over Christmas. You can top them with cherries, mangos, peaches and strawberries, but you can literally use any fruit you have left over! Serves: 4 | Prep time: 10 mins | Cooking time: 30 mins

Ingredients: 3 eggs 25cl milk 8 slices of bread (it doesn’t matter if it’s stale!) 1 tablespoon butter 4 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon of cinnamon 3 drops vanilla extract 1 pinch salt 8 thick slices of bread Fruit - any seasonal, left over fruit Maple syrup or honey Fresh mint - for garnish Lemon or lime - optional (but an acid really gives it a kick!)

Steps: Dr Donna

Cut fruit into small, bite sized pieces and set aside Whisk the eggs, sugar, milk and vanilla extract together

We love hearing Dr Donna’s insights, and this month, we’ve asked her to answer some of her patients most commonly asked questions.

Dip bread into the mix and allow to soak for 10-15 seconds on each side Heat a bit of butter in a large non-stick frypan over medium heat Transfer to frypan and cook for 2 minutes each side until golden, repeat for all slices Top with cherries, mangoes, strawberries, peaches and/or any other fruits left over

1. Do you still have to have pap smears if you’ve had a hysterectomy?

Drizzle a little syrup, squeeze a little lime and garnish with fresh mint. Enjoy!

It depends on the reason for the hysterectomy and if there has been any history of abnormal smears in the past. 2. What can I do to heal a caesarean scar? Gently massaging the scar from 2-4 weeks with emollients can help to heal the c/section scar. Specific dressings, some medications and laser treatments can also be effective if you have a thickened of keloid scar. 3. My periods are so painful I often have to take time off work around this time. Is this normal? There is nothing normal about period pain. If you are experiencing debilitating period pain that is affecting your quality of life and impacting on your ability to attend school/work, please see a GP with an interest in women’s health and discuss further! Dr Donna and the team at Her Medical would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Stay well and enjoy the festive season. If you have any questions for Dr Donna please email her at info@getit-magazine.com.au

Putting the spotlight on financial wellbeing for women, Brooke Roberts and Victoria Devine chat with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter about creating empowered financial support communities, getting smart with your money and doing personal finance your way (plus some festive financial tips!). 1. Why is financial literacy so important? B: Financial literacy is key to breaking the cycle of financial hardship. I think it’s so important that everyone - but especially those groups that have had barriers to getting ahead financially, like women and minority groups - can have the same opportunities available to them. V: Finance isn’t something that’s really taught at school so if your family didn’t proactively teach you about how to manage money - then chances are, you have some learning to do. One of the key goals with my podcast She’s on the Money is really breaking down those barriers, speaking about finances in everyday language.

2. Tell us about Sharesies and She’s On the Money. B: Sharesies came about because we could see this massive gap in the market. Investing was this complex thing reserved for wealthy people and we just believed that building your wealth through investing is something that should be accessible for everyone - so that’s how the idea was born. The Sharesies platform now has over 470,000 investors and $1.9billion invested. V: She’s on the Money started with my good friend Georgia King and I - we both could see the gap in financial education and outcomes, particularly for females. The podcast was a way that we could hang out and have a chat - and at the same time be helping other women to feel empowered to get ahead financially. We have a full time team now, a Facebook community with almost 200,000 people, have launched additional podcasts and I’ve even had the chance to publish a book.

3. What are the best ways to start managing money right? B: A budget is a great place to start in terms of understanding what’s coming in, what’s going out and what you have leftover from that to consider saving or investing. It helps you focus on the big picture and really think about where you want your money to go. V: Having a budget is key to staying on top of your finances. You can still be flexible and enjoy your spending - it’s just about knowing that everything has to fit inside your budget.

So if you buy a pair of shoes one week, then maybe that means that you skip ordering takeout.

4. Do you have any specific memorable “money” moments? B: I remember when I was turning 10 years old my mum told me she had been putting a few dollars away every week since I was born - I begged her to give it to me. She said, I can either keep putting money away for you each week or you can take this money now and I’ll stop. So I took the money and spent it shouting my friends a trip to the local theme park - if only I knew then what I know now! V: After a workshop, a young woman came up to me to share that because of our community and their support, she was able to leave a financially, physically and emotionally abusive relationship – and had finally gotten out of debt that she’d carried for more than 10 years – in that moment, we both just broke and couldn’t stop crying. I was so overwhelmed and proud.

5. For someone feeling a little panicked about their financial situation, what are some steps to take to get back on track? B: Talk about it. As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved. You’ll also likely feel less alone as a lot of people at stages in their lives have felt that feeling you’re experiencing. V:Make a plan! It’s often very overwhelming when you’re in that position so you might like to speak to a trusted friend or family member or a free financial hardship service. The important thing to remember is that lots of people get themselves into sticky financial situations and then successfully get themselves out of them.

5 Ways to Stay on Track Financially this Festive Season 1.

Create a separate December budget. We all know that December is not a normal spending month so don’t feel like you’re stuck to your regular budget. Can you cut back on other expenses or set aside $10 a week throughout the year to account for the jump in spending?

2. Make a gift list and check it twice. Plan your gift list early! We all know that sales are coming up at the end of November so have your shopping list ready - your bank account will thank you for being organised. 3.

Stick to your investing plan over the break. Markets don’t pause in December so if you have an investing plan then stick to it over the break too!

4. Take advantage of free activities. Balance out all those dinner and cocktail catch ups with free activities like picnics and beach trips to catch up with friends and family. 5.

Suggest Kris Kringle. If you’re going to be attending multiple parties in the lead up to Christmas where gifting is expected, offer to organise a Kris Kringle draw with a reasonable limit (like $20).

Holiday fun for everyone Whether you’re enjoying a staycation or celebrating Christmas with family and friends, we’ve rounded up the best of festivities to enjoy Words: Charmaine Yabsley

HEAD NORTH Sometimes you just have to get away, and where better than the Sunshine Coast? With its safe, patrolled beach and sumptuous local cuisine it truly is home away from home. Relax and read at one of the many sandy coves, or get active and hire some stand-up paddle boards or kayaks and explore the many lakes surrounding the area. For the kids there’s thrills and spills to enjoy at the nearby Bli Bli Water Park (www.blibliwatersports.com. au). There are hours of fun to be had on the slides, water trampolines and runways. If you, or your kids, are looking for a bigger challenge, the park also offers wake boarding. Base yourself at the Novotel Sunshine Coast Resort Hotel – it’s perfectly situated near the gorgeous Mudjimba Beach and Marcoola Beach, boasts a golf club, spa, and heated pool. There’s even an arcade room for the kids, so they can head over for some gaming, while you enjoy a drink by the lagoon. If you’re escaping without the children then book a romantic overwater bungalow.

or a more formal and delicious seafood restaurant – with a touch of Sicily – at the Sola restaurant. Sit on the deck, watch the kids frolic in the lagoon lake, and enjoy every moment of your Christmas break.

HEAD TO THE FARM Worendo Cottages, a short ninety minutes’ drive away, offers an experience a world away from the bright lights of the Gold Coast. Choose from one of five cottages overlooking the Lost World Valley and World Heritage Rainforest Mountains of Lamington National Park: larger parties can book the homestead, or foodies may prefer the Wild Lime Cottage (cooking classes are also held here). Each cottage has a fireplace and all offer outdoor firepits accompanied by breathtaking views. Kids will love the regular feeding time when they can get up close to the farm’s sheep, cows and chickens. Pack a picnic and set off on foot to explore the area, or head to the farm’s dam for a day of kayaking (supplied by the farm). Then finish the day with a glass or two on your balcony as the sunset paints the surrounds. worendo.com

GO KAYAKING If you’re hankering after some Big Blue, then Sunset Safari’s are offering day tours via ferry to Moreton Island with a difference. Set aside a full day to enjoy the beauty of the island, including snorkelling on the Tangalooma Wrecks followed by a picnic lunch on the white sandy beaches. Then experience the sea life from above with their new transparent kayaks, which allow you to watch the fish frolic and play – look out for turtles, dolphins and rays from the comfort of your own kayak. After such a peaceful morning amp your adrenalin with some sand tobogganing, followed by a 4WD adventure to “The Desert”. Suitable for people of all abilities, it’s a full day of fun that’s guaranteed to suit everyone. Keep an eye out for Sunset Safari’s newest offering – night-time kayaking – perfect for those who like their adventures after dark. sunsetsafaris.com.au.

CHRISTMAS LUNCH WITHOUT THE STRESS For those wishing for a day off on Christmas Day why not book the family for a festive feed at one of the many hotels and the resorts on the coast. At time of press there were still availability at The Sheraton Mirage and RACV Resort: take a look at the latter’s drool-worthy three-course Christmas lunch with includes double lamb cutlets with porcini and marjoram sauce, followed by a dessert buffet of our dreams. Can’t decide between the traditional Christmas pudding with burnt brandy sauce and the vanilla panna cotta? Choose both! It is Christmas after all. One of the best Christmas lunch offerings is at The Star Gold Coast, where you can indulge your hankering for fresh seafood at their Harvest Buffet, with a live entertainment and three-hour drinks package. What could be better, sumptuous food, good company, and best of all, no washing up! And if you want to bring a touch a glamour to your day, book a pool-side cabana – relax with a couple of mocktails and soak up the atmosphere. star.com.au. Ps. If the thought of getting dressed in your finery to celebrate Christmas Day exhausts you, then bring some fivestar service home. The Star are offering a choice of Classic or Enhanced Harpers: they serve six people and include a wide array of meats and sides. Or upgrade your hamper to include fresh seafood. Sit back, enjoy the praise without breaking a sweat.

Can Menopause

be Seasonal ?

Menopause is determined retrospectively, 12 months after your last period. Despite it being a natural process in every woman’s life, it is often misunderstood and many women feel unsupported. Gaining a better understanding of menopause can help you prepare and create a more positive, empowered experience. Hormonal changes (namely a reduction in oestrogen) cause the majority of menopausal symptoms which may affect a woman’s quality of life. Symptoms include but are not limited to: joint pain, dry skin, brain fog, low mood, anxiety, hot flushes, night sweats, bladder issues, vaginal dryness and reduced sex drive. The extent and type of symptoms are varied among different women.

There is evidence of seasonal variation with some menopausal symptoms. According to a recent study, symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats are exacerbated by the GET IT December 2021

rising temperatures during Summer months (Harlow et al., 2020).

Dr. Donna Tanchev, founder of her medical, provides some evidence-based strategies to lessen the discomfort as things heat up. In preparation for the warmer months ahead, Dr. Donna recommends dressing in light layers of clothing to make it easier to regulate your body temperature. Lightweight cotton absorbs perspiration and can be removed with ease if needed. Making a conscious effort to eat and drink cold food and beverages may help too, and limiting alcohol and spicy food as this may worsen symptoms. Most importantly, when you feel a hot flush starting, try your best to relax. Mindful breathing exercises that slow your heartbeat down can bring your body temperature down as well. If you find night sweats especially troublesome, use layered bedding that can easily be removed during the night if needed. Dress in light, breathable bed clothes and keep your bedroom temperature cool. Aiming to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day can aid restful sleep too, along with essential oils to promote feelings of relaxation, such as lavender.

26

Menopausal Hormone Treatment (MHT) has been found to significantly reduce hot flushes and night sweats, there are also non hormonal options too which may help. If you are experiencing symptoms that are affecting your wellbeing and/or ability to function day to day, please discuss these with your general practitioner.

A hot flush is pretty much what it sounds like, and common symptoms include: •

A sudden sensation of heat in your chest, face, and head

Blotchy, red skin patches

Rapid heartbeat

Perspiration

Dizziness

Nausea

Post-flush chills

Maintain

your fitness this festive season As the festive season approaches there is more cause to celebrate a successful year, take a well-earned break and catch up with family & friends.

which events you may like to indulge, which ones you may not attend, and when you can definitely keep your nutrition 100 per cent.

The Christmas get-togethers, the office morning tea, the gifts of chocolate and alcohol add up quickly though, and all this hearty cheer can come with a hefty price: unwanted weight gain and loss of fitness.

Training towards a big event or goal will always keep you more motivated and accountable to training, so find an event or challenge to be held close to Christmas or in January, this way during the festive season your training habits will continue as you track towards your big goal.

On average most people will gain between 08 and 2.7kg through the festive season, and it can often take months to remove that added weight. But through smart planning and programming, there is no reason why this can’t be avoided. Here are the top five tips to navigate through the festive season keeping your health and fitness in check:

Plan all anticipated functions, events and parties. Sit down and add into your calendar or diary all dates of note, this way you can plan

Set yourself a fitness goal for the festive period

Be Consistent with exercise Too often people abandon their exercise and nutrition regimes completely over the festive season, only to set New Year’s Resolutions, come January. The damage is done by the new year and motivation can easily waive when you see how much fitness and health you may have lost through inactivity, even when it is only for a few weeks of partying.

Pick and choose your social events There are many parties, functions, drinks and breakups through December but it’s 27

important to remember that you have the choice as to whether you indulge or not at these events. There may be one event in a week of three different parties you really want to enjoy, so why not choose to only drink at this function, but choose nonalcoholic beverages at the other two?

Make smarter alcohol choices It is wiser to choose lower alcohol or lower carbohydrate beer, rather than full strength, and choosing low or no sugar mixers with spirits can provide massive benefits of reduced calorie intake during a drinking session. It’s a great time to kick back and enjoy a drink with friends and family, but making slight changes to your choice of drink can yield massive advantages.

This December sees some deep diving into your subconscious sector. Digging deep into your value system’s and how you relate to power dynamics at the subconscious level has some surprising results and insights. A solar eclipse in your social sector on December 4th is a new cycle in your social networks bringing fresh groups into your sphere.

Issues may also arise around travel or mass communication thanks to a tricky Venus Pluto aspect all month.
