LETTER FROM
Nicole Editor
While I still feel like I’m getting back into the ‘new year’ routine, we’re actually one month away from the half-way point. It’s been a blur that’s for sure, and as always, mums around the world have stepped up to the plate, and managed all that life continues to throw their way. And that includes mothers of adult children too – I know I need my mum just as much (if not more) than I always have. So, on this Mother’s Day month, I want to share the words of Erma Bombeck, which I feel sums up the magic of mothers beautifully. When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of “overtime” when the angel appeared and said. “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.” And God said, “Have you read the specs on this order?” She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands.” The angel shook her head slowly and said. “Six pairs of hands.... no way.” It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” God remarked, “it’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”
OPEN 7 DAYS | 9:30AM TO 5PM
That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel. God nodded.
32 Masthead Way, The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove • Ph 5577 8981
One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, ‘What are you kids doing in there?’ when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. ‘I understand and I love you’ without so much as uttering a word.” God,” said the angel touching his sleeve gently, “Get some rest tomorrow....” “I can’t,” said God, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...and can get a nine-year-old to stand under a shower.” The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed. But tough!” said God excitedly. “You can imagine what this mother can do or endure.” Can it think?” Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the Creator. Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek. There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model.” It’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.” What’s it for? “It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.” You are a genius, “ said the angel. Sombrely, God said, “I didn’t put it there.”

The motherhood
juggle compassion, at times a bit messy, fulfilling, hard – it is all of this and so much more. As a young woman in her early 20s, Rebecca was flung headfirst into her new normal; she had a baby, was building her brand to be a global powerhouse in the days where social media and e-commerce were relatively uncharted waters, all while navigating single-motherhood. Her lessons learned? It’s normal to feel stuck more times than you can count. “To not always know what your next move should be. However, both in business and motherhood you need to keep moving and pivoting until you find what works.
Navigating a career and parenthood requires a balancing act unlike any other. “It’s hard work and takes ruthless efficiency and impeccable time-management,” says Rebecca Klodinsky, Designer and Founder of celebrity-swimwear brand IIXIIST. While motherhood and entrepreneurship have been a roller coaster of ups and downs, being a mum has been the greatest asset in helping her grow as an entrepreneur, she says. “It’s taught me how to be compassionate, how to be patient, and to see the beauty in all the lessons life has to offer, especially the hard ones.” Rebecca, now 32, credits her nine years running a successful brand to understanding there is no such thing as “normal”. Those photos you see on social media depicting the “perfect” family or “ideal” business aren’t reality and tend to place unrealistic expectations on what your parenting and career should look like, Rebecca says. “Obstacles are everywhere in both motherhood and entrepreneurship. What works for one person won’t work for the other. Learning to find balance is a privilege, a challenge, a bittersweet lesson of love and
GET IT May 2022
“When something doesn’t feel right, try the next best option. Choosing that next best option will do one of two things: it will give you the clarity to move forward or the confirmation to close the door, and try again.” Here Rebecca shares her tips for navigating a career and parenthood: Take Care Of Yourself Fact: entrepreneurs and parents are often terrible at taking care of themselves. They pride themselves on working long hours and barely leaving their desks, being early for school pick-ups, minimising screen time and everything in between. Raising children and running a business are important jobs, and looking after yourself physically, mentally and emotionally helps you do those jobs well. You need to fill up our own cup, so you can pour into others’. Simple things like scheduling daily “me time”, exercise, learning to say no and nourishing your body properly can do wonders. Mum Guilt Is Real, But That Doesn’t Make It True Guilt means different things to different people - a random bouquet of emotions that are as varied and motley as the next. However, when it comes to parent guilt, chances are you actually haven’t done anything wrong. Collectively, this make a strong case: if everyone feels guilty, there is no other “better” parent to compare ourselves to. The truth is while parenthood is beautiful it can also be a mess. No real 10
change is possible until working parents stop trying to be all things to all people— perfect at work, perfect as partners, and perfect as parent, with each role kept entirely separate. There Is Always A Bigger Obstacle Ahead Whether it’s your career, your home life or your past; we have all gone through hardship in our lives at some point and almost on a daily basis we have to overcome obstacles. Obstacles are the stumbling blocks along the way and moving past them will allow you to accomplish your goals. It’s not an understatement to say that every success comes with challenges. Learning to navigate though them are essential. No One Cares About Your Business As Much As You Do Hard truth: no one cares about your business as much as you. It’s harsh, but true. Sure, you have some people in your life who take particular interest and help when you need them, but they don’t care about it nearly as much as you do. Operating in life with the fear of failure is not an effective way to make decisions. How will you look? What will people think? Living in this constant state of anxiety can make you busy as hell yet accomplish nothing. Find what makes you happy, work hard, and live fearlessly. If you screw up, no one cares. Neither should you. Trust Yourself If you’re going to trust one person, let it be yourself. People who trust themselves stay true to their values and beliefs, regardless of their situation. They know they are capable of overcoming obstacles and surviving difficulties. Whether it be in business or motherhood, being aware of your emotions and thoughts will allow you to make better decisions.

My own mum died about three years ago so it will be a different day with no mothering to do and no mothering to be had. The sausage dogs will no doubt take full advantage of my need to express some maternal affection! Mothering is a bit of a minefield. I had a complicated relationship with my mum. It gave me more insight into the ways in which I wanted to mother differently, rather than a shining example of parental perfection. (Which by the way, other than on TV, does not exist) There are elements of mothering that are completely independent of gender or whether you have actually grown a human being inside you. Some of the best mothering I’ve seen has been done by men and ‘courtesy aunts’. I think that at its heart, being a ‘good’ (now there’s a loaded term…..) mother is all about wanting to help someone else achieve their full potential. Creating an environment where the person feels loved, confident, respected and valued. It’s most definitely not about $600 prams and ‘instaworthy’ babycinos. It’s a very selfless thing to do…. And it’s extremely hard work. It’s also one of the most rewarding and satisfying jobs on the planet. Mother’s Day is a time when we celebrate the people who bring the maternal into our lives. My son (now 21) used to say as a three year old ‘will you keep care of me?’ Let’s celebrate all the people in our lives who ‘keep care of us’. Also, the people who use a spit moistened hankie to rub dirt off our faces.

Coming from the fast-paced world of fine dining, chefs Mark Kerray and Jone Kadilevu are taking childcare cooking to new heights at Harmony Early Learning. The duo share with us their tips for creating sophisticated flavours for young palates, and the reviews from their audience of junior food critics. 1.
What inspired your change in career direction?
MK: I thought the move to early childcare as a chef would just be temporary, only a year or so before I returned to the fine-dining life, but I simply fell in love with it as soon as I got there. Once I had children myself, this just made me even more passionate. JK: My son was enrolled at Harmony Early Learning, Hope Island, and I saw there was a job opening for a chef position. After spending so long in the fine dining industry I was excited for a change and spoke to Mark about it. I’m so grateful to work as a chef in childcare; I get to help the next generation grow.
Dining to Kids
on their preconceived taste preferences. Better to encourage children to be adventurous, try new flavours and textures and create a fun eating environment for the children.
3. Tell us about the importance of children having a good relationship with food from a young age? MK: We are big advocates for creating meaningful connections through food especially with technology taking over our lives. We make sure children create meaningful connections at mealtimes, with what they’re eating and each other, which is so important for socialisation and development. JK: Our philosophy is to create healthy habits. This means trying new flavours and textures to ensure the children’s palettes develop the right way - then, when they reach adulthood, they can appreciate all types of food and cultures.
4. Can you share some favourite dishes you’ve cooked to date?
2. Did you have to adjust much of how you cooked for children’s palates?
MK: For morning tea we might make a mango and coconut chia pudding, or an organic banana & apricot loaf. But we do change it up a lot, as variety is important for the children. The children absolutely love my mother’s carrot cake recipe!
MK: You’re not doing children any favours by hiding vegetables, or altering meals based

pork. We also cook things like supercharged miso vegetable fried rice, san choy bow, and zucchini and Brussels sprout fritters.
5. How has the response been from the kids? MK: After my first year in the job, we’re yet to get bad feedback from the children! It’s quite amazing how inquisitive they are each week. They are always looking to try more things, and we don’t hold back on the flavours. JK: I love it when we hear feedback from parents, saying that ‘my children don’t eat anything at home, but they love the food you make!’. It makes me proud that the children are loving the food we make for them, and it also gives parents the reassurance that they are getting a solid meal.
6. What’s the most rewarding part of your role? JK: I am so thankful that I get to play an important role in providing children with the fuel they need to survive and to develop their taste. I love seeing how the children grow and learn to appreciate different food from different cultures, it will always be rewarding for me! MK: There’s nothing better than fueling the next generation. They are all superstars, and I’m so proud of how far they have come in developing their eating habits.

Delivering Furry Friends & Awareness
Around Australia
Friends with Dignity has collaborated with the Gold Coast’s Bocchetta Plush Toys for a new campaign to provide a lifelong cuddly friend to domestic violence child survivors, and Get It Magazine sat down with charity founder Manuela Whitford to learn more.
1.
What is the mission statement of Friends with Dignity, and how did it get started?
We’re a collaborative not-for-profit focused on improving the quality of life of any adult and child impacted by Domestic Violence, through the provision of financial and tangible resources, programs and scholarships and enhancing the personal safety of individuals. I recognise that Domestic Violence does not discriminate and men and the LGBTQI community too need to be recognised and assisted - everyone has the right to safety.
2. Can you share with us how your current collaboration and campaign with Bocchetta Plush Toys came about? The owner Lee-Ann Nordin and I met a couple of years ago and she has been an avid supporter of Friends with Dignity and what we do. A few months ago we met and came up with this campaign to provide all children
GET IT May 2022
in refuge a lifelong friend that can be with them at all times, support them and perhaps ease the trauma. We both believe that a plush toy is not just a toy, it can be a friend and confidant and a resource to the child to find comfort and some joy.
3. Can you share with us the importance of plush animals for children who have survived domestic violence? Children can form a bond and connection with a plush toy as there is reduced fear of loss and attachment as there would be with another human. Sharing feelings or emotion with another person can be both confronting and intimidating for a child but can be easier with a plush toy limiting the risk of shame or judgment. Animal assisted therapy has been around for a long time now and is being recognised as a viable and effective approach in clinical settings.
4. What are some common traits for children who have survived or are currently enduring domestic violence that we can keep an eye out for? 18
Monitoring a child that is at risk of Domestic Violence is crucial however sadly most of these children do not get seen as the parent/s or guardians often avoid going to places that may assess and possibly report them for abuse. These children often struggle and have difficulty in identifying and expressing their emotions, have poor social skills, mental health disorders, poor academic performance and behavioural issues.
5. What’s on the horizon for Friends with Dignity? We aim to be in every state, region, suburb and town so that we can assist anyone affected and continue to engage the community in making Australia a better and safer place for everyone. Together we need to accept and understand that Domestic Violence is a problem and we all have a social responsibility to make a difference and change lives, one friend at a time.

Having been awarded with the OAM this year, founder and CEO of The Sanctuary Refuge, Simone Patterson sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to share her story of compassion, bravery and change. Never shying away from challenging environments, Simone Patterson started her career path working in NSW prisons at just 20 years old. The experience galvanized Simone to seek out a way to support victims of domestic violence, as she recalls, “I watched reoffending prisoners hurt women, kill their wives, lie about it, get bail for their crimes and find another partner…when nothing changes, nothing changes.” With a vision to carve her career path in this area, Simone completed several years of study, and work extensively in charities and refuges, soon realising there was a gap in support that clearly needed to be filled. “There were so many intakes where women were sobbing at giving their animals up knowing they were possibly euthanised,” Simone shares, “They viewed them as family members, and reasons to keep living. It didn’t make sense to me, and I went to bed in the staff section that night so sad, and thinking that refuges needed to change this silly rule.” For Simone, it was clear that if she wanted something done, she needed to do it herself, launching The Sanctuary Women, Children & Pets Refuge in 2016 after taking out a 1.2 million dollar loan that she has self-funded. “The Sanctuary is on 2.5 acres filled with beautiful animals amongst the trees,” Simone details, “The leap of faith was a must - when you just know no one else will help and it’s the craziest most unrealistic idea you convince yourself and then others it can work, even when really doubting yourself.” Today, The Sanctuary provides shelter, education and support for women, children and their animals escaping domestic violence, and relies on the donations and support from the community at large. With a holistic view of counseling, health and personal development, Simone’s work has not gone unnoticed, and she was named as a Gold Coast OAM (Order of Australia Medal) recipient for 2022.
Considering this high level of recognition, Simone tells me “To be honest, I feel so many more people deserve an OAM. On my team, I’m surrounded by Dr Marian Evans and strong men like Mick Robinson from Betterman, accountants with amazing skills and a team that all support me in my weak moments. I have an army of strength behind me and they all deserve it so much more than I do.” For Simone, inspiration comes daily from the individuals she works with. “Women turn up so broken emotionally and physically, but they leave stronger and better people,” Simone explains, “I’m inspired by great people who get laws changed, I’m inspired by people who stand up and say enough is enough.” For those of us looking to support a loved one who we believe is experiencing domestic violence, Simone advises to trust your gut, and look for places to stay where they can be truly safe. “Family is the most dangerous place for any victim of violence to go to. We recently had a police officer turn up, crying, with her daughter because she knew she couldn’t protect her - a refuge was a safer option. If you suspect a friend or family member is going through DV don’t ask, ring around, get options and tell them options. If you feel they are unsafe, they often are.” Having achieved so much already, Simone is looking to expand her support reach even further. “On my horizon is to start a men’s refuge and help men escaping domestic violence with their children and pets - men’s lives matter too. I also want my refuge duplicated both across Australia and worldwide.” Determined, dedicated and striving for more, Simone is truly a force of good, having impacted so many lives positively. For those still finding their way, she tells me, “In year 9, my maths teacher told my mother that I’d never be smart enough to do anything but be a cleaner, and I did work as a cleaner - but I was studying at the same time! My message to both kids and adults is “Don’t ever accept criticism - rise above and prove that person wrong”. So what? Academics was never going to be my strength, but being kind was - and now I always have a calculator on my phone!”

Perimenopause? Menopause? Get the facts behind the hot flushes. We’ve all heard the terms, but what does it really mean to experience perimenopause and menopause? Journalist, self-proclaimed ‘Peri Warrior’ and host of the new Be MPowered course, Shelly Horton gives us the lowdown on these two important transitional periods. Tell us about Be Mpowered - how did it come to be? When I first started getting perimenopausal symptoms I was sideswiped as I had never even heard the word perimenopause. I made it my passion and purpose to spread the word so other women didn’t get shocked. When the opportunity to work with Benefit Pocket and create the Be Mpowered course came about I was thrilled - to work with a group of other intelligent women and get the science and facts out there is a dream come true. Can you share with us a bit about what perimenopause is vs menopause? Most people know menopause is when your period stops for a full 12 months, but in fact, peri is the kicker. It can last five to seven years before menopause. Perimenopause is when your hormones are fluctuating, and your oestrogen levels and progesterone levels are up and down. That’s when you’re getting a lot of the symptoms like irregular periods, brain fog, some anxiety and depression, night sweats, hot flushes, and insomnia. There’s a lot going on and it’s different for every woman. How does the Be Mpowered course work? Be Mpowered is an online course led by a whole stack of women’s health experts - you can take it at your own pace, so you can go through the videos slowly and absorb them, or if you want to get all the information at once, you can. We’re looking at the physical GET IT May 2022
changes, how your mental health is impacted, and how to navigate that in the workplace with simple tactics. Do you feel there is still a lot of stigma and mystery around these hormonal changes for women? My own mother is the perfect example - she had terrible perimenopause and menopause symptoms, but her GP was scared off about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) because of misinformation. Now she’s post-menopausal at 73 and still getting hot flushes - her life would have been easier and happier if she’d received the correct treatment. No more secret women’s business! We all need to speak up. I think some women feel a little bit of shame around perimenopause and menopause as a sign of ageing. I want to flip the way we look at it and say, you know what, this is just like your computer getting an upgrade - everything needs to reboot so that you can be a better version of yourself. For a reader who may feel they are experiencing symptoms of perimenopause or menopause, what should be their first step? Definitely see your GP, but, not all GPs specialise in this area. A great thing to do is jump on https://www.menopause.org.au where you can put in your postcode and find the nearest doctor who has a passion for 22
perimenopause and menopause. If you want to then choose HRT or natural therapies, that’s up to you, but it is from an informed place. Special offer for Get It Mag readers! Sign up for Be Mpowered using the code GETIT30 and you’ll receive 30 per cent off! You can also use this code for any of the other Benefit Pocket courses that you’re interested in. Iron deficiency
– know the signs. One in three women put up with exhaustion and fatigue for more than six months before seeking help to treat low iron, new research shows. A national survey of 400 women aged 25-54 who had experienced low iron also found two in three women had experienced the effects of low iron for more than a year, with 27 per cent classified as long-term sufferers (5-10 years). According to the World Health Organisation, iron deficiency is the most prevalent nutrient deficiency in the world, affecting about one third of the world’s population, with premenopausal and pregnant women at greatest risk. It is thought that up to five per cent of the Australian population has iron deficiency anaemia, caused by low iron stores. Common symptoms of low iron include tiredness, fatigue, dizziness, breathlessness and poor concentration and cognition. The survey, for Vifor Pharma, also found almost 40 per cent of respondents only discovered they were iron deficient incidentally through other procedures such as routine blood tests and pregnancy. Jean Hailes gynaecologist Dr Elizabeth
Farrell said it was common for women to ignore symptoms or attribute them to other lifestyle factors. “They will typically say their tiredness is due to being busy and doing a lot of running around. The problem is tiredness is such a diffuse subject and can mean so many different things that people don’t consider it a reason to investigate a potentially bigger problem. There is not enough awareness about just how important iron is and how central it is to wellbeing,” Dr Farrell said. Iron is an essential mineral required to produce red blood cells, which are necessary for a healthy immune system, mental function, muscle strength and energy. The body can’t manufacture iron, so needs to be absorbed from food. Vegetarians and vegans require almost twice the daily amount, given iron in plant-based foods is less bioavailable and therefore more difficult for the body to absorb. Failing to consume as much iron as you use each day leads to iron deficiency. Other key survey findings include: •
75% of respondents describe iron deficiency as having a moderate to major impact on their daily lives, with 13% unable to live their life as fully as
23
they want to; •
the continued adverse impact of low iron peaks at between 1 to 3 years of suffering;
•
tiredness, fatigue, shortness of breath and malaise were the biggest trigger to seek information or advice (43%);
•
81% of women saw a GP when they suspected they had low iron;
•
of the 95% who had a blood test, 88% were diagnosed with iron deficiency;
•
68% were recommended an oral iron supplement, with 19% electing to have an iron infusion; and
•
28% suffered from heavy periods.

Doing it for the kids! Getting healthy and fit can be difficult for parents, but it’s important for both them and you. Here are six top tips for getting the family involved in healthy activities. 1.
2.
a challenge. If you make the activities desirable and important your kids will appreciate the time, they spend with you. 3.
Put a limit on screen time. Let’s face it, these days everyone is on their device playing, watching, researching, having fun but we know this time-consuming leisure activity is highly addictive and encourages a sedentary lifestyle. Set some standards in your house around screen time that everyone adheres to the WHOLE family including YOU! Stick to your own rules and be a great role model for those around you.
Find something your family like doing together and do more of it. It may be heading to the beach, playing at the park or kicking the ball around. This can also lead to organised sport - team sports, Sunday nippers, dancing, gymnastics or scouts.
4.
Have a range of outdoor activities the family can play from old school hopscotch, totem tennis and handball through to kite flying, riding bikes and scooters and going for walks. Make these activities accessible, fun and even competitive for those who love
You may also have to help your child find their “thing”. Not everyone is competitive or sporty but there is an active leisure activity for everyone. Give your child a chance to research what they may enjoy and often they can participate in a two-week trial to see if it’s for them. Keep doing trials until you find what works.
5.
Once the family are involved in sport make the most of the time, watching, coaching, and participating in the organisation of the club. Your kids will

love seeing you be supportive of them, and it shows the importance you place on an active healthy lifestyle. 6.
If your kids have swim squad - go for a swim at the same time, if they have AFL training do laps of the oval whilst you’re waiting. This makes it easy to diarise and time is there to be used instead of standing around chatting with the other parents - walk and talk!
Encouraging your family to have a healthy active lifestyle will have so many positive benefits for all of you. Your family will appreciate it and everyone will have great memories of feeling fit and healthy and spending quality time together.

Kathrine Peereboom:
Australia’s First Law Enforcement & Autism Trainer Having founded Spectrum Support in 2017, Kathrine Peereboom sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to share her story of family, forward thinking, and the work her charity is doing to educate law enforcement in understanding and managing ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) in the field. For Kathrine Peereboom, the driver for everything she does comes down to family, and as the mother of three boys, her personal experiences with children affected with ASD are interwoven with her day-to-day work. “My children are profoundly autistic,” Kathrine tells me. “They are non-verbal, still in nappies and have comorbid conditions that make daily life tasks challenging for them. Learning, discovering, and navigating the world of autism has been at times confusing. There is so much information, misinformation, and vocal social media opinions that I found focusing on what’s right for my boys always allowed me peace of mind.” Now a fixture in disability education for law enforcement across the Eastern seaboard, Kathrine founded Spectrum Support in order to make positive change and influence the first responder field for both her own children and the ASD community at large. “Their safety and the parental fear of what would happen to them if we were unable to be by their side was the guiding force to GET IT May 2022
bridge the educational gap between first responders and the autistic community,” Katherine shares. “Our success is underpinned by our team and the community who contribute to this vital training along with police officers who actively participate in making the communities they serve safer for autistic and disabled Australians.” Since 2019, the charity has partnered with the NSW Police Force and Queensland Police Service, which encompasses over 31,000 officers, and Spectrum Support are currently in talks with Victoria Police. For law enforcement officers around Australia, this training is delivered inperson and is highly interactive, which is critical for giving them the hands-on experience needed to apply techniques and methodology when they are out in the field, and Spectrum Support are pioneers in this space. Kathrine explains, “This kind of training is vital for officers and the feedback has been highly supportive and positive. NSW Police also adopted micro virtual learnings, which is our two hour training, compartmentalised into three and four minute intensive video training sessions making it accessible when they are unable to be reassigned from their core duties and responsibilities for days of training. The goal is to ensure every first responder across Australia has access to this training.” There is always more work to be done, and Kathrine is realistic about the path ahead of them, with so much misunderstanding surrounding ASD.
32
“The saying goes, if you met one autistic person you’ve met one autistic person. The spectrum is so great and when you consider co-morbid conditions such as Global Developmental Delays, Intellectual Impairments, Down Syndrome for example, the complexities of autism are increasingly prevalent,” Katherine says. “I truly believe that neurodiversity should be a part of everyday societal education. This begins in day care and continues all the way through to school, work, parliament, and aged care. The greater understanding of autism, opens a dialog which perpetuates change and action, ultimately leading towards an inclusive Australia.” With her days starting at 5am and jumping into meetings with her team in the US from 7am, Kathrine balances traveling, training and long days in the office with time for her family, and she adds, “It’s a juggle, but we make it work! The boys will always come first - they are so much fun and they will always make me laugh, pull me away from work and demand my attention.” As our interview comes to a close, Kathrine reflects on her proudest career moments to date, and she tells me: “One of the best feelings is after a 2-hour training session, when officers can ask questions about specific situations they currently face. I have often stayed beyond a further hour in the Q&A, which shows how genuine and caring these officers are. They all want positive interactions and outcomes in the field. I am so proud to be making my contribution as Australia’s first Law Enforcement and Autism Trainers.”
