¿Qué es un Alux?

EL GUARDIÁN MAYA

¿En alguna ocasión tus padres o abuelas te hablaron sobre los aluxes? Un alux es un equivalente de un elfo o duende germánico que se dedica a hacer de las suyas. Tienen presencia en la península de Yucatán y en determinados puntos de Guatemala y Belice. Se tiene la creencia que los aluxes son pequeños, con una estatura que se asemeja a la altura de las rodillas de una persona normal, además de que tienen apariencia de personitas portando trajes típicos mayas. La tradición afirma que estos seres tienen la capacidad de volverse invisibles y de poder comunicarse o espantar a los humanos. Están asociados a la naturaleza, grutas y selvas.

similar to the Mayan gods by using virgin clay extracted from a cave into which no woman had entered. As they were made to order, another of the indispensable ingredients for the creation of these fantastic beings, were 9 drops of blood drawn from the bloodstream of the person who was going to be their owner to form a solid alliance between human and creature. When the clay figure was ready, it was given to the owner and placed on an altar under a tree, leaving offerings with food and water. If the doll disappeared at night, it was because it had come to life.

The aluxes were created to be the guardians of the cornfields, the animals and the jungle.

Other tasks of these beings were to protect the Mayan underworld, the Xibalbá.

La importancia de

las Abejas y miel maya

La apicultura en Yucatán tiene una gran relevancia ya que es la región productora de la miel más importante de México, el 95% de miel producida en la Península está destinada al mercado internacional. La miel es uno de los productos naturales más valorados, presentes en la vida del humano desde la antigüedad. Por sus increíbles propiedades, le traen grandes beneficios al cuerpo incluso es de los más usados cuando se trata de remedios caseros, ha sido muy utilizada como remedio medicinal por milenios, razón por la que ha estado presente por tantos años para curar todo, desde rozaduras hasta cáncer.

U

na de las características principales de la miel es su composición química inusual que la mantiene fresca, no se pudre, además es particularmente baja en humedad y extremadamente ácida, siendo inhabitable para bacterias y microorganismos.

Según cuenta la leyenda maya, en la zona de Cobá, el Dios Descendiente Ah Muzenkab es el encargado de cuidar a las abejas meliponas y proteger la miel, la cual era usada como método de

pago para los mayas. La popularidad se expandió y en Yucatán se llegaron a conocer 16 especies distintas de este tipo de abejas, aunque en la actualidad, se mantienen 13 especies distintas vivas.

Las abejas meliponas no tienen aguijón, se les conoció en la antigüedad como las “abejas de los mayas”, pues datos científicos apuntan a que fue la primera cultura que se encargó de su domesticación en troncos llamados “jobones”, donde elaboraban sus colmenas y dis-

frutaban de su miel.

La abeja melipona solo produce de tres a cinco litros de miel al año, por desgracia está en peligro de extinción por la deforestación, ganadería, agricultura y urbanización mal planeada y desmedida porque estos animales buscan su alimento en árboles muy específicos. Es por eso que la miel de esta abeja tiene un precio más elevado a comparación de otras especies.

La leyenda y tradición del La antigua leyenda Maya del maquech el cual es un pequeño insecto, representa un sentimiento tan grande como cuenta su historia.

Tradicionalmente, las mujeres de Yucatán lo han usado vivo como ornamento en el vestido maya. La palabra “maquech” proviene del maya yucateco, aunque científicamente su nombre es “Zopherus chilensis”. Su comercialización está ligada a la siguiente leyenda antigua maya:

xistía una hermosa princesa llamada Cuzán, era la hija preferida de Ahnú Dtundtunxcaán.

Cuando Cuzán tuvo edad para el matrimonio, su padre concertó la unión con el hijo del Halach Uinic (gran señor) de la gran ciudad de Nan Chan, el príncipe Ek Chapat, futuro señor del reino.

Cuzán aceptó la elección de su papá, pero un día, al regresar de la guerra, el rey vino acompañado de un hermoso joven llamado Chac Pol (cabeza roja).

Al verse los dos, quedaron eternamente enamorados.

Cuando el rey se enteró que Chac Pol era el amante de su retoña, se enfureció tanto que mandó a sacrificarlo.

Cuzán le imploró que no lo hiciera y que ella a cambio lo dejaría de ver para siempre y aceptaría casarse con Ek Chapat. Después de consultar con los sacerdotes, el Halach Uinic le perdonó la vida, bajo la única condición de que su hija se encerrara en sus habitaciones. Si salía, Chac Pol sería sacrificado.

La princesa fue llamada a presentarse ante el Halach Uinic. Cuando llegó a los patios del templo, sus ojos buscaron a los de su amado. Tembló al pensar que lo habían asesinado, preguntó a su padre, quien sólo sonrió.

Un hechicero se le acercó ofreciéndole un escarabajo y le dijo: "Cuzán, aquí tienes a tu amado Chac Pol. Tu padre le concedió la vida, pero me pidió que lo convirtiera en un insecto por haber tenido la osadía de amarte".

La princesa Cuzán lo tomó y le dijo: "Juré nunca separarme de ti y cumpliré mi juramento".

The princess was called to appear before the Halach Uinic. When she reached the temple courtyards, her eyes searched those of her beloved. He trembled at the thought that he had been killed, asked his father, who only smiled. A sorcerer approached him offering him a beetle and said: "Cuzán, here you have your beloved Chac Pol. Your father granted him his life, but he asked me to turn him into an insect because he had the audacity to love you." Princess Cuzán took it and said: "I swore never to separate from you and I will keep my oath."

Frederick Catherwood

the illustrator of the archaeological zones of Yucatan At the time, there was a man who drew Yucatan sites by hand, taking care of details such as decorations and respecting their essence. Who was that man? It is nothing more and less than Frederick Catherwood.

En su momento, hubo un hombre que dibujó los yacimientos de Yucatán a mano, cuidando los detalles como las decoraciones y respetando su esencia. ¿Quién era dicho hombre? Se trata nada más y menos que de Frederick Catherwood.

Nació el 27 de febrero de 1799 en Hoxton, Inglaterra. Perteneciente a una familia económicamente bien acomodada, su formación académica fue en pintura en la prestigiosa escuela de “Royal Academy of Arts”, a la par que estudió arquitectura y escultura clásica de Grecia, Sicilia e Italia. En 1836 fue cuando conoció al escritor John Lloyd Stephens en Nueva York al estar montando su primera exposición de sus dibujos, inmediatamente se convirtió en su colega y compañero de travesías. Lloyd le propuso que viajasen a distintos sitios y fue así que emprendieron una expedición entre 1839 y 1840 donde visitaron diversas regiones por primera vez, se adjudicaban el mote de “redescubrimiento” de la civilización maya y esto lo plasmaron en el libro “Incidentes de viaje en América Central, Chiapas y Yuca8

tán”, publicado en 1841. El ilustrador retrató varias zonas arqueológicas de Copán, Tulum, Yucatán, etc.

En 1842, Catherwood y Stephens regresaron a tierras yucatecas y como resultado de las exploraciones surgió la obra “Incidentes de viaje en Yucatán” lanzado al mercado en 1843, su contenido consistía de 845 grabados y láminas diseñadas por el dibujante.

Un año después, Frederick lanzó al mercado “Vistas de monumentos antiguos en América Central, Chiapas y Yucatán” con 25 litografías hechas de acuarelas de los yacimientos arqueológicos que visitó y exploró.

En 1854, era un pasajero del buque de vapor del Ártico que iba a cruzar por el Océano Atlántico de Liverpool rumbo a Nueva York. El 27 de septiembre de dicho año, a causa de la pésima visibilidad chocó con el vapor francés “Vesta”, provocando el hundimiento del Ártico y desgraciadamente, muchas personas perdieron la vida por el accidente marítimo, incluyendo la de Frederick.

He was born on February 27, 1799 in Hoxton, England. Belonging to an economically well-off family, his academic training was in painting at the prestigious school of the "Royal Academy of Arts", while he studied architecture and classical sculpture from Greece, Sicily and Italy. It was in 1836 when he met the writer John Lloyd Stephens in New York when he was mounting his first exhibition of his drawings, he immediately became his colleague and traveling companion.

Lloyd proposed that they travel to different places and so they undertook an expedition between 1839 and 1840 where they visited various regions for the first time, they claimed the nickname of "rediscovery" of the Mayan civilization and this was reflected in the book "Travel Incidents in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan ”, published in 1841. The illustrator portrayed various archaeological sites in Copán, Tulum, Yucatán, etc.

In 1842, Catherwood and Stephens returned to Yucatecan lands and as a result of the explorations the work “Incidents of Travel in Yucatan” was launched on the market in 1843, its content consisted of 845 engravings and plates designed by the artist. A year later, Frederick launched “Views of ancient monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan” with 25 lithographs made from watercolors of the archaeological sites that he visited and explored.

In 1854, he was a passenger on the Arctic steamship that was to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Liverpool to New York. On September 27 of that year, due to the poor visibility, it collided with the French steam “Vesta”, causing the collapse of the Arctic and unfortunately, many people lost their lives due to the maritime accident, including that of Frederick.

MONUMENTO A LA HISTORIA DE MÉXICO Y YUCATÁN TALLADA A PIEDRA

Una de las construcciones más emblemáticas de Mérida es el Monumento a la Patria, tanto es su importancia que es el centro de reunión de yucatecos cuando se realizan eventos y festejos. Su imponente presencia embellece el último tramo de la Avenida Paseo de Montejo, turistas quedan asombrados al apreciarla, le toman fotografías o se sientan en sus escalinatas para que sea el fondo de sus retratos en su visita a la ciudad. Muy pocos conocen realmente su historia, los grabados tallados en ella y su diseño tienen un motivo.

A continuación, te contaremos el significado de esta majestuosa construcción.

l 23 de abril de 1956 se inauguró el emblemático Monumento a la Patria, su construcción comenzó el 7 de marzo de 1945. La escultura ubicada al final de Paseo de Montejo, narra la historia de México y el origen marino del pueblo de los Itzáes. Las 31 columnas representan a los estados del país, y al Distrito Federal (hoy CDMX). Se puede apreciar las etapas de la colonia, la independencia, la reforma, y la revolución. El escultor colombiano Rómulo Rozo realizó la construcción y fue proyectada por Manuel Amábilis. Es el único monumento en el mundo tallada directamente en piedra.

El monumento tiene un hemiciclo central con 2 rampas, una fuente en la parte trasera con un diámetro externo de 40 metros. En la fachada se encuentra un espejo de agua con un pretil en piedra que alude al lago de Texcoco donde se reproduce al águila luchando contra una serpiente encima de un nopal que tiene la forma de “V” de victoria, símbolo de la fundación de Tenochtitlán, dando así el nacimiento y origen de la cultura mexica.

alcanzaban el cielo y sus raíces tenían una conexión al inframundo. Al lado derecho de la ceiba se puede visualizar escenas plásticas de la antigua civilización como mujeres bailando, hombres tocando instrumentos musicales, animales como el tapir y el venado, la caza, y los inicios de la historia de México a partir del padre del mestizaje, Gonzalo Guerrero, pasando la etapa de Cristóbal Colón con sus 3 carabelas, los hermanos Pinzón, y al descubridor de Yucatán en 1517, Francisco Hernández de Córdoba.

En el centro del círculo está la figura principal, escultura que mida 14 metros de altura con la faz de mestiza llevando en su pecho el fuego sagrado de la vida.

n April 23, 1956 the emblematic Monument to the Fatherland was inaugurated, its construction began on March 7, 1945. The sculpture located at the end of Paseo de Montejo, tells the history of Mexico and the marine origin of the Itzáes people. l siguiente relato proviene de Don Vicente, guía local y custodio del cenote de Calcuch que, por cierto, es muy hermoso por la tonalidad de sus aguas y las sorprendentes dunas de calcita en su fondo, además de que igual es el cuidador del otro cenote que tiene por nombre Tanimax.

Sobre el último mencionado, nos relata: “Anteriormente, el área que ocupa este cenote, estaba rodeado de planteles de henequén, mi papá me mandaba a buscar agua a este sitio, pero todavía no era un cenote si no una gran sarteneja, una oquedad de piedra caliza erosionada como un cuenco que contenía agua

que se depositaba por la lluvia o que, de alguna manera, tenía una pequeña conexión con una pequeña vena del cenote que todavía no estaba a la vista. En una ocasión como muchas veces, mi papá estaba trabajando cortando henequén, y me pidió que fuera a llenar su calabazo porque el sol estaba intenso y ya pasaba

del medio día, fui como de costumbre al lugar de siempre para llenar el recipiente, para mi sorpresa no encontraba la sarteneja.

Seguí buscando por sus alrededores y nada, lo único que veía en el lugar donde debía estar era un profundo agujero que me impresionaba por su oscuridad y regresé a informar a mi padre que ya no estaba la sarteneja, no me creían y después de unos regaños en maya, fuimos los dos a ver qué había sucedido.

R E C E T A (rinde 6 porciones) INGREDIENTES • 300gr Carne ahumada estilo Temozón • 100gr Longaniza de Valladolid • 1⁄2 pieza Cebolla morada • 3 dientesde ajo •250 gr Harina para masa (maseca) • 1⁄2 taza de Agua • 1⁄4 cucharadita de Sal • 1 taza de Aceite vegetal • 1 pieza delechuga • 1 pieza de tomate Para el aderezo de chile Xcatic • 2 piezas de Chile Xcatic • 2 dientes de ajo • 1 pieza de huevo • 10 gr de Cilantro • 1 Limón • 1⁄2 cucharadita de sal • 1⁄2 taza Aceite vegetal PREPARACIÓN

1) Picar la cebolla en cubos medianos y sofreír por 3-4min junto con el ajo picado en una sartén a fuego medio con un chorrito de aceite.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 6 PORTIONS) • 300gr Temozón style smoked meat • 100gr Longaniza from Valladolid • 1⁄2 piece red onion • 3 garlic cloves • 250 gr Flour for dough (maseca) • 1⁄2 cup of Water • 1⁄4 teaspoon of Salt • 1 cup of vegetable oil • 1 piece of lettuce • 1 piece of tomato For the Xcatic chili dressing • 2 pieces of Chile Xcatic • 2 garlic cloves • 1 piece of egg • 10 gr of coriander • 1 lemon • 1⁄2 teaspoon of salt • 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil PREPARATION 1) Chop the onion into medium cubes and fry for 3-4min together with the minced garlic in a frying pan over medium heat with a splash of oil.

2) Chop or chop the sausage, add to the pan and fry for a few minutes.

3) Chop the smoked meat into cubes and add to the pan, mix well all the ingredients for a couple of minutes.

The smoked meat is already cooked, soit is not necessary to leave it on the fire for a long time.

4) Mix the flour with the water and salt in a bowl, knead

perfectly until obtaining a firm dough but not dry, if you feel it is very brittle add little by little little a teaspoon of water until obtaining the desired consistency.

8) In a blender add the chilies, coriander, garlic, lemon, salt and egg to liquefy everything, at the same time incorporate the oil little by little in the form of ice until all the ingredients are perfectly emulsified and obtain a semi-thick sauce.

9) To assemble the salbut put the dough and fried lettuce leaf, stuffed with smoked meat with sausage, bathe with a little xcatic dressing and decorate with tomato slices

uando los colonizadores llegaron a Yucatán, creían que los mayas se escondían tras las máscaras para esconder su personalidad, pero el verdadero motivo por la cual la tribu las usaban era porque tenía un significado que se basaban en sus creencias.

La cultura olmeca es considera como la madre de las civilizaciones prehispánicas en Mesoamérica, la maya fue su heredera y adoptaron gran parte de su ideología, como el uso de este objeto y por el gran interés por la muerte y el inframundo, cosa que se reflejó en muchos símbolos mayas.
