En su momento, hubo un hombre que dibujó los yacimientos de Yucatán a mano, cuidando los detalles como las decoraciones y respetando su esencia. ¿Quién era dicho hombre? Se trata nada más y menos que de Frederick Catherwood. Nació el 27 de febrero de 1799 en Hoxton, Inglaterra. Perteneciente a una familia económicamente bien acomodada, su formación académica fue en pintura en la prestigiosa escuela de “Royal Academy of Arts”, a la par que estudió arquitectura y escultura clásica de Grecia, Sicilia e Italia. En 1836 fue cuando conoció al escritor John Lloyd Stephens en Nueva York al estar montando su primera exposición de sus dibujos, inmediatamente se convirtió en su colega y compañero de travesías. Lloyd le propuso que viajasen a distintos sitios y fue así que emprendieron una expedición entre 1839 y 1840 donde visitaron diversas regiones por primera vez, se adjudicaban el mote de “redescubrimiento” de la civilización maya y esto lo plasmaron en el libro “Incidentes de viaje en América Central, Chiapas y Yuca8

El ilustrador retrató varias zonas arqueológicas de Copán, Tulum, Yucatán, etc. En 1842, Catherwood y Stephens regresaron a tierras yucatecas y como resultado de las exploraciones surgió la obra “Incidentes de viaje en Yucatán” lanzado al mercado en 1843, su contenido consistía de 845 grabados y láminas diseñadas por el dibujante. Un año después, Frederick lanzó al mercado “Vistas de monumentos antiguos en América Central, Chiapas y Yucatán” con 25 litografías hechas de acuarelas de los yacimientos arqueológicos que visitó y exploró. En 1854, era un pasajero del buque de vapor del Ártico que iba a cruzar por el Océano Atlántico de Liverpool rumbo a Nueva York. El 27 de septiembre de dicho año, a causa de la pésima visibilidad chocó con el vapor francés “Vesta”, provocando el hundimiento del Ártico y desgraciadamente, muchas personas perdieron la vida por el accidente marítimo, incluyendo la de Frederick. He was born on February 27, 1799 in Hoxton, England. Belonging to an economically well-off family, his academic training was in painting at the prestigious school of the "Royal Academy of Arts", while he studied architecture and classical sculpture from Greece, Sicily and Italy. It was in 1836 when he met the writer John Lloyd Stephens in New York when he was mounting his first exhibition of his drawings, he immediately became his colleague and traveling companion. Lloyd proposed that they travel to different places and so they undertook an expedition between 1839 and 1840 where they visited various regions for the first time, they claimed the nickname of "rediscovery" of the Mayan civilization and this was reflected in the book "Travel Incidents in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan ”, published in 1841. The illustrator portrayed various archaeological sites in Copán, Tulum, Yucatán, etc. In 1842, Catherwood and Stephens returned to Yucatecan lands and as a result of the explorations the work “Incidents of Travel in Yucatan” was launched on the market in 1843, its content consisted of 845 engravings and plates designed by the artist. A year later, Frederick launched “Views of ancient monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan” with 25 lithographs made from watercolors of the archaeological sites that he visited and explored. In 1854, he was a passenger on the Arctic steamship that was to cross the Atlantic Ocean from Liverpool to New York. On September 27 of that year, due to the poor visibility, it collided with the French steam “Vesta”, causing the collapse of the Arctic and unfortunately, many people lost their lives due to the maritime accident, including that of Frederick.
