i decides visitar esta playa, lo primero que apreciarás al llegar en la calle principal es una vivienda roja custodiada por una figura colocada en el techo de la misma que se le conoce como “la Casa del Monifato”, una de las construcciones más antiguas no solo del Puerto de Sisal, sino del Estado. Como tal, el Monifato se trata de una estatuilla de piedra que simboliza a un soldado o guerrero con mirada desafiante que porta una falda corta o faldellín de tiras de cuero sujetada por una faja, indumentaria que utilizaban los antiguos guerreros romanos. Alrededor de su cuello tiene una especie de soga y en su cabeza posee un gorro o casco. Por su semblante, pareciera que está retando a cualquiera que lo vea. En su mano derecha está sujetando un tipo de garrote que reposa entre su espalda y cuello, mientras que su mano izquierda la tiene reposada en su cintura. Los sisaleños mencionan que la escultura se colocó en la residencia de manera estratégica para ahuyentar a los piratas y pensaran que siempre había un vigilante en el puerto, su presencia ocasionaba que las embarcaciones dispararan sus proyectiles hacia éste, aunque una gran mayoría de los dispa-

The Monifato of Sisal, the Watchman of a Port Sisal is one of the many beautiful beach towns that welcome local, national and foreign visitors who enjoy its attractions, such as the El Palmar State Reserve (Reserva Estatal “El Palmar”) and its mangroves where beautiful flamingos and other birds live.

hould you decide to visit this beach town, the first thing you will appreciate when you arrive is, on the main street, a red house guarded by a figure placed on the roof of the same that is known as “The House of the Monkey,” one of the oldest constructions not only from the Port of Sisal, but in Yucatán State. As such, the Monifato is a stone statuette that symbolizes a soldier or warrior with a defiant look who wears a short skirt or skirt made of leather strips held by a sash, an outfit used by ancient Roman warriors. Around his neck he has a kind of rope and on his head he has a cap or helmet. From his countenance, it seems that he is challenging anyone who beholds him. In his right hand she is holding a type of club that lies between her back and neck,
while his left hand is resting on her waist. Sisaleños say that the sculpture was placed in the residence in a strategic way to scare away the pirates and they thought that there was always a watchman in the port. As a reference, consider the date of a slab embedded in one of its walls that indicates the house dates to the year 1585, that is, 43 years after the founding of Mérida in 1542.
