Mérida en la Historia
Rescatando el Patrimonio Histórico en sus diferentes expresiones

as calles de Mérida resguardan un sinfín de anécdotas que pasaban de generación en generación y que lamentablemente, muchas de éstas desaparecieron momentáneamente porque no había alguien que las rescatara para darlas a conocer a los meridanos. Sin embargo, esto cambaría completamente en 2013 cuando Sergio Ceballos Castillo, un joven apasionado de la historia de la ciudad e impulsado por su inquietud decidió crearse un blog: “Mérida en la Historia”. A pesar de que estudió Contabilidad y en la actualidad está estudiando la Licenciatura en Historia, los orígenes de la página se remontan cuando estaba estudiando contaduría. Empezó a recolectar fotografías de la Biblioteca Virtual de Yucatán y de temas que le llamaban su atención. Esta combinación acompañada de un lenguaje ameno sobre los lugares que solemos frecuentar ha permitido que el proyecto crezca tras haber pasado por una serie de cambios. Su proceso de investigación inicia cuando está caminando en las calles del Centro y ve un edificio que le llama su atención, lo fotografía y se pregunta quién vivió ahí o cuál función tenía hace muchos años. Cuando se dispone a leer periódicos viejos del siglo XIX, un tema se conecta con otro que había leído y de esta manera se construyen las historias de personajes, antiguos comerciantes, y de los espacios públicos. El mensaje que busca transmitir a sus seguidores a través de su plataforma es la preocupación del Patrimonio, no solamente el edificado como las antiguas fincas en los alrededores de la ciudad o las Casonas de Paseo de Montejo, sino la del patrimonio en sus diferentes expresiones como el documental mediante los archivos y el patrimonio intangible en la manera de vivir. Sergio invita a la gente a que ingresen en su blog y compartan sus anécdotas. Asimismo, invita a sus lectores a que visiten las bibliotecas y museos en general.

Restoring the Historical Heritage in its various forms The streets of Mérida are home to countless anecdotes that were passed down from generation to generation. Many of these tales, unfortunately, stand to be lost simply because there was no one to write them down so the residents of Mérida could learn of them. This, however, changed in 2013 when Sergio Ceballos Castillo, a young man passionate about the history of the city and driven by his concern, decided to create a blog: “Mérida en la historia,” or “Mérida in History.” Although an accountant by training, he is presently finishing his Bachelor’s in History. His blog, however, goes back to when he was studying accounting. He began to collect photographs of the Yucatán Virtual Library focusing on subjects that caught his attention. Images and texts, accompanied by his ease with language about the places about town all around us, has allowed the project to grow after having undergone a series of changes.
His research process begins when he is walking in the streets of the Historic Center and he sees a building that catches his attention. He photographs it and he wonders who lived there or what purpose the building served when it was constructed. He then reviews old newspapers from the 19th century. Thus, one topic is connected to another that he creates a narrative in the way the stories of personalities, former businesses, and public spaces were constructed as the city grew. The message that it seeks to convey to his readers is the concern of heritage, not only the one built such as the old homesteads in the surroundings of the city or the grand mansions of Paseo de Montejo, but that of heritage in its different manifestations such as the documentary through archives and intangible heritage in the way of life. Sergio invites people to enter read blog and share their own anecdotes. Likewise, he invites his readers to visit libraries and museums in general.
