Off to the galaxy… or maybe not. International and unattainable stars, or perhaps an exhibition that brings contemporary art closer and makes it more understandable... Certainly, Palazzo Strozzi has created a special universe this time. Reaching for the Stars. From Maurizio Cattelan to Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, celebrates some of the luminaries of contemporary art with over 70 works by leading Italian and international contemporary artists including Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Lara Favaretto, William Kentridge, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Sarah Lucas and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Created in collaboration with the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rabaudengo for the Foundation’s 30th anniversary, the exhibition curated by Arturo Galansino and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaurdengo, is the result of a project based on the creation of a platform for experimentation and participation The display of the collection’s artworks pairs up with new works created especially for the exhibition, as well as a broad programme of activities and projects involving artists in talks and workshops, and numerous activities to engage the public. The exhibition includes major works such as 1000 Names (1983) by Anish Kapoor or Damien Hirst’s Love is Great (1994), alongside a substantial selection of works by Maurizio Cattelan, an artist whose work is crucial to any understanding of contemporary Italian art between the 1990s and 2000s, together with work by such artists as Paola Pivi and Lara Favaretto. In parallel, the exhibition unfolds among themed sections such as that dominated by Cindy Sherman’s celebrated series Untitled Film Stills (1978-1980), which proposes a social and political reflection on the theme of identity in relation to works by Shirin Neshat, the photographic silkscreen Untitled (Not ugly enough) (1997) by Barbara Kruger or the large sculpture in or-

In partenza per la galassia… o forse no. Star internazionali e inarrivabili, o forse una mostra che rende l’arte contemporaneo più comprensibile e vicina... Di sicuro Palazzo Strozzi questa volta ha creato un universo speciale: Reaching for the Stars. Da Maurizio Cattelan a Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, propone una celebrazione delle stelle dell’arte di oggi attraverso oltre 70 opere dei più importanti artisti contemporanei italiani e internazionali , tra cui Maurizio Cattelan, Cindy Sherman, Damien Hirst, Lara Favaretto, William Kentridge, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Sarah Lucas, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Creata in collaborazione con la Fondazione Sandretto Re Rabaudengo, per i 30 anni della stessa Fondazione, l’operazione portata avanti da Arturo Galansino e da Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaurdengo dà voce alla volontà di creare una piattaforma di sperimentazione e partecipazione in cui si uniscono l’esposizione di opere della collezione, nuove produzioni create per la mostra, oltre a un ampio programma di attività e progetti con gli artisti protagonisti di talk e workshop, e a numerose attività per coinvolgere il pubblico. Nella mostra sono presenti, ad esempio, opere fondamentali come 1000 Names (1983) di Anish Kapoor o Love Is Great (1994) di Damien Hirst , insieme a un’ampia selezione di lavori di Maurizio Cattelan , artista centrale per un’esplorazione dell’arte italiana tra anni Novanta e Duemila, insieme, tra gli altri, a Paola Pivi o Lara Favaretto . In parallelo si snodano sezioni tematiche come quella dominata dalla celebre serie Untitled Film Still (1978-1980) di Cindy Sherman che propone una riflessione sociale e politica sul tema dell’identità in rapporto a opere di Shirin Neshat , la grande serigrafia Untitled ( Not ugly enough ) (1997) di Barbara Kruger o la grande scultura in materiali organici Self-Portrait (1993) di ganic materials Self-Portrait (1993) by Pawel Althamer. The investigation into sculpture expands in the great works of Andra Ursuţa, Adrián Villar Rojas, Berlinde De Bruyckere and Mark Manders, whose practices investigate the body and the figure through deconstruction and re-composition. This is echoed by the exploration of pictorial research through paintings by artists such as Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Sanya Kantarovsky, Michael Armitage, Cecily Brown and Avery Singer, testifying to the enduring vitality of this medium, from representative to abstract art, especially in the younger generations. The itinerary is completed by a large section dedicated to video art with manifesto works by artists such as William Kentridge, present with History of the Main Complaint (1996), Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, with the famous video installation Zidane. A 21st Century Portrait (2005) and Ragnar Kjartansson with The End – Rocky Mountains (2009).

Nata dalla passione per il contemporaneo della sua Presidente, preceduta da una collezione a collection built through intensive interaction with the young emerging artists of the 90s, the Foundation today is a non-profit institution that reflects the guidelines of a new patronage, based on responsibility undertaken personally and on the sharing of individual passions, knowledge and resources. Its two locations are the Turin branch, inaugurated in 2002, a museum building built from scratch in a neighbourhood that bears witness to the city’s industrial past and its transformations. Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, in Guarene, on the other hand, is an eighteenth-century residence, protected by the Superintendence of Cultural and Environmental Heritage. It is one of the historic buildings of this small village nestled in the Roero hills. In 2019, not far from the Palazzo, the Foundation opened the Collina di San Licerio art park to the public. Installations by artists from all over the world are placed between the woods and the rows of a young vineyard. The star, symbol of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation, shows us the path of this intergalactic journey between artists and great works. The exhibition begins with Goshka Macuga’s imposing rocket, positioned in the courtyard, which literally points to the stars and seems to be waiting to be launched, and continues in the 8 thematic rooms of the Palazzo in a compelling and articulated itinerary that allows different degrees and depths of reading. In the Strozzina is the section dedicated costruita attraverso un dialogo serrato con i giovani artisti emergenti degli anni ‘90, la Fondazione oggi è un’istituzione no profit che rispecchia gli indirizzi di un nuovo mecenatismo, basato sulla responsabilità assunta in prima persona e sulla condivisione di passioni, saperi e risorse individuali. Due le sedi: la sede torinese, inaugurata nel 2002, è un’architettura museale costruita ex novo in un quartiere che testimonia il passato industriale della città e le sue trasformazioni. Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, a Guarene, è invece una residenza settecentesca, tutelata dalla Soprintendenza dei Beni Culturali e Ambientali. È uno degli edifici storici di questo piccolo borgo immerso fra le colline del Roero. Nel 2019, poco distante dal Palazzo, la Fondazione ha aperto al pubblico il Parco d’arte della Collina di San Licerio. Le installazioni di artisti di tutto il mondo sono collocate tra un bosco selvatico e i filari di una giovane vigna. La stella, simbolo della Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, ci indica il cammino di questo viaggio intergalattico tra artistar e grandi opere. La mostra comincia con l’imponente razzo di Goshka Macuga, posizionato nel cortile, che punta letteralmente alle stelle e sembra in attesa di venir lanciato; e continua nelle 8 sale tematiche del Palazzo in un percorso avvincente e articolato che permette diversi gradi e profondità di lettura. Nella Strozzina la sezione dedicata alla video arte.
