Fly fishing in Ormea

Recentemente abbiamo pescato nel tratto nokill solo mosca del Tanaro, presso il comune di Ormea. Questa riserva per il Flyfishing è gestita egregiamente dalla famiglia Cagna, titolare dell’hotel San Carlo, qualche chilometro a monte del paese di Ormea. Il fiume Tanaro è famoso per le trote di grossa taglia e la gestione di questi tratti di fiume arriva da lontano, le foto in bianco e nero e l’atmosfera che si respira all’interno dell’hotel fanno capire subito che questa è una grande tradizione familiare. Il Tanaro nasce all'estremità meridionale del Piemonte, al confine con la Liguria, sulle Alpi Liguri dal Monte Saccarello (2201 m) con il nome di Tanarello, e scorre per una decina di km (di cui i primi 4 km in territorio piemontese e al confine con la Liguria ed i restanti in territorio ligure), in una valle dai connotati tipicamente alpini. Giunto a 4 km a monte dell'abitato di Ponte di Nava (frazione di Ormea), riceve da sinistra l'apporto del Negrone, torrente che nasce invece dalla Punta Marguareis (2651 m) in Piemonte. Da questa confluenza il corso d'acqua raddoppia di dimensioni e cambia nome diventando Tanaro dirigendosi verso nord-est come spumeggiante torrente alpino in una valle stretta e boscosa, fungendo per alcuni km dal confine tra Piemonte e Liguria. Una volta bagnato Ponte di Nava e ricevuto da destra il Rio Nava, il fiume entra definitivamente in territorio piemontese giungendo presso il comune di Ormea (CN) dove riceve da sinistra il Rio Armella.

We have recently fished in the no-kill “fly only” stretch of the Tanaro River, in the municipality of Ormea, only with flies. This fly-fishing reserve is very well managed by the Cagna family, owner of San Carlo hotel, a few kilometers upstream from the town of Ormea. The Tanaro river is famous for large trout and the management of these stretches of the river goes way back to the past. The black and white photos and the atmosphere of the hotel make it immediately clear that this is a great family tradition. The Tanaro was born with the name Tanarello, from Monte Saccarello (2,201 m) at the southern end of Piedmont, on the border with Liguria in the Ligurian Alps. It flows for about 10 km (the first 4 km in Piedmontese territory and on the border with Liguria and the rest in Ligurian territory) in a valley with typically Alpine features. At 4 km upstream of the built-up area of Ponte di Nava (fraction of Ormea), it is joined from the left by Negrone, a stream that originates from Punta Marguareis (2,651 m) in Piedmont. From this confluence, the watercourse doubles in size and changes its name to become Tanaro, and heads north-east as a sparkling alpine stream in a narrow and wooded valley,

È qui che la famiglia Cagna gestisce alcuni chilometri di fiume da tre generazioni con il risultato di essere una delle riserve di pesca più antiche d’Italia. Sinceramente non so sia la più antica, ma è una delle meglio gestite che abbia mai visto. L’hotel, ristrutturato recentemente, è di alto livello, con finiture in legno spazzolato che ben si sposano con l’atmosfera e le immagini di pesca nelle stanze. Il ristorante vale da solo il viaggio, un’ottima selezione di vini e uno chef appassionato garantiscono ottime specialità locali. La vallata è interessante anche per fare visite turistiche ma già la passeggiata nel sentiero lungo il fiume offre una bellissima escursione. Qui c’è anche la possibilità di fare un lungo e spettacolare trekking di valle delle Alpi del Sud. Se ne viene a capo dopo 135 chilometri, 8000 metri di dislivello e 9 tappe di cammino e meraviglia. La noia non è contemplata: si passa da borgate dai nomi musicali, abitate tutto l'anno, ai resti abbandonati di antichi insediamenti alpini. A poco a poco, i castagni monumentali cedono il passo alle faggete, che si arrendono ai larici e agli ampi pascoli alpini, dove solo la roccia calcarea interrompe il verde intenso dei prati, che ospitano

I honestly don't know if it's the oldest, but it's one of the best organized I've ever seen. The recently refurbished hotel is of a high standard, with brushed wood finishes that blend well with the atmosphere and fishing images in the rooms. The restaurant alone is worth the trip, since an excellent selection of wines and a passionate chef guarantee excellent local specialties. The valley is also interesting for sightseeing, but the walk on the path along the river already offers a beautiful excursion. Here one can take a long and spectacular trek in the valley of the Southern Alps. It ends after 135 kilometers, 8,000 meters in altitude and 9 stages of walking and wonder. un'impressionante e multicolore varietà di specie botaniche. Il versante sinistro del tour ha un'anima alpina, il versante destro, affacciato sul mare, rivela uno spirito saraceno, affascinante e mediterraneo. Per la maggior parte ciclabile, l'Alto Tanaro Tour è meraviglioso se percorso d'un fiato, ma si presta benissimo a brevi e ripetuti assaggi lunghi un fine settimana o poco più. Questo tracciato è personalizzabile a piacere: si possono infatti scegliere il verso di percorrenza e il punto da cui partire. Tutte le strutture ricettive sono attrezzate per garantire all'escursionista a piedi o in E-Bike un ottimo punto d'appoggio, capace di fornire assistenza alle prenotazioni ed eventuale servizio di trasporto bagagli. Per i piccoli pescatori che vogliono prendere qualche pesce, l’hotel San Carlo ha alcune vasche con trote a disposizione, e la qualità dei pesci di questa riserva è indiscussa; belle trote in un ottimo contesto rendono l’hotel San Carlo una meta da consigliare non solo ai neofiti che vogliono imparare a pescare, ma anche agli esperti che vogliono passare qualche giornata in relax con la famiglia. Per chi ama la E-bike l’hotel offre punti per la ricarica e l’assistenza e non va dimenticato che questa struttura si trova a mezz’ora d’auto dalla riviera ligure.

This route can be customized as desired: in fact, you can choose the direction of travel and the starting point. All the accommodation facilities are equipped to guarantee an excellent base for the hikers and those who want to use E-Bikes. For small fishermen who want to catch some fish, the San Carlo hotel has some trout tanks available and the quality of the fish in this reserve is undisputed.
