FROM THE DESK of the
Dear Members,
It has been another busy year at the Club! I wanted to provide you with some updates on the many projects we are working on.
Chef Update
We are well over halfway through the search for our next executive chef. As your leadership team, we understand the importance of securing a qualified chef for our operation and addressing the membership’s suggestions. The selection committee includes Kay Williams, Connie Pouncey, Penny Hearn, Bill Odell, Bob Spinetto, Rich Kulak and Bill LaSorsa. We anticipate having our new chef in place early in the new year.
Master Plan Survey Presentation
The Master Plan Survey concluded, and we had over 900 member responses for a 64.09% response rate. The Chambers group indicated this was a very good response rate. The Master Plan Ad-hoc Committee received over 300 pages of comments. Chambers presented the results to the community on November 14 and a recording is published to the website for members not able to attend.
Pickleball and Bocce Improvement Plan Update
The bocce courts are in final stages of completion and the shade structures are in place. The four new pickleball courts are also now in place. We do not have a final completion date for the project, but we will keep the membership apprised as we approach the finish line.
Fitness Equipment Update
We expect the new fitness equipment to be delivered around the time this newsletter hits your mailbox.
Pool Update
The outdoor pool is scheduled to be refurbished in January. This will include a pebble quartz finish on the entire pool base with new tile surrounds. We will also be replacing the coping and several areas of the pool deck.
Benches, Waste Receptacles & Tennis Bleacher Shade Structures
We hope you are enjoying the new Polywood Benches placed throughout the amenity areas. Waste receptacles made of a similar material will be added as well. This Polywood material has an extensive life span and is easy to maintain. Also, new shade structures have been installed over the tennis court seating areas.

Many Thanks to our Hampton Hall Club Ambassadors!
We thank you for your help as you graciously reach out to fellow members, making sure they are enjoying their new club.
Your Club’s Ambassadors warmly greet new members and make them feel at home. Their role is essential in the Club’s mission to provide a welcoming, inclusive, and comfortable environment. Whether it’s a friendly email or phone call, an invitation to play golf, tennis or pickleball, or an opportunity to mix and mingle at a dining event, Ambassadors help build connections and spark friendships. Neighbors become friends and friends become family!
Hampton Hall welcomed over 70 new property owners and nearly 80 new golf members January through November 2022. If you are a new member and haven’t connected with your ambassador and are ready to do so, please contact your Membership team and we’ll be happy to introduce you!
New Ambassadors are also needed! If you would like to serve as a Hampton Hall Club Ambassador, please complete the Ambassador Volunteer Form listed under MY CLUB on the Club website. You may also attend the informational meeting planned for Wednesday, February 8 to learn more. Thank you for helping reflect the warm and inviting culture of our Club!

Lagoon Update
Several things need to be accomplished before any lagoon work can begin. It is an extensive project and we must first identify the available companies capable of doing the work. The work will include dredging, rebuilding littoral shelves, planting the littoral shelves, repairing many of the bank areas and installing new crown grass on the banks. The littoral shelves keep the sides of the lagoons intact as the water moves through them as part of our stormwater management system.
Next, we will request proposals from the companies to bid the work. The bids will then be evaluated before being awarded. It has been recommended to conduct the dredging work at the same time the golf course is closed for the least interruption. Once the contract has been awarded, we hope to start the actual work on this project in April of 2023.
Common Grounds Landscape Plan
Wood and Partners was hired to work on a comprehensive plan for the aging landscape in the common grounds and the club grounds of Hampton Hall. Much of the landscaping that was originally planted has long passed its healthy life span. These professionals are tasked to provide a comprehensive plan for the Club and the needed funds that will be allocated over the next four years in phases.
Parking Lots and Rejuvenator
The parking lots for both clubhouses are scheduled to be resurfaced in 2023. The funds have been accrued for in the Club reserve study. We will also be adding rejuvenator to the approximate twelve miles of roads in our community to preserve a longer life span. This is estimated to extend the life up to four years before we begin to mill and replace the asphalt throughout the entire community.
Golf Course Restoration
The golf course restoration project is scheduled to begin April 2023. We are planning to sprig the greens, address drainage and restore the bunkers. Golf Course Architect, Nathan Crace of Watermark Golf, has been working with the committee. They have done a terrific job of researching and planning for this project.
In Closing
We are busier than ever with Club dining and events. Please review the calendar and make your reservations online. I am very thankful for the TEAM that we have here at Hampton Hall Club. Although the labor market has been challenging recently in the area, our team has continued to support the Club and our membership through longer hours and dedicated service.
Warmest Wishes, Loraine Ellis Vienne, CCM, CCE, CAM
We are excited to announce Hampton Hall has won the Bluffton’s Reader’s Choice Awards for favorite private golf club and favorite gated community again this year. Thank you for your votes!

OKTOBERFEST
memberSPOTLIGHT
The Burnside family holds one very active household here in Hampton Hall! From the time Brian and Natalie said their vows 27 years ago, they envisioned making the Lowcountry their permanent destination. “Many family vacations on Hilton Head and Kiawah Island solidified our desire to one day live in coastal South Carolina,” says Natalie.
When Brian’s career as a Hospital CEO presented an opportunity in Bluffton after leading facilities in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Texas, their dream became a reality. Coming to Bluffton, one of the first places they looked was Hampton Hall. “We just loved everything about the community! As soon as you drive through the gate, Hampton Hall feels like a vacation resort and has so much to offer. That and its close proximity to great schools and our church made it a perfect match for us.”
That has been important to the Burnsides as quality family time with their three children is always a top priority. You have probably noticed Aidan and Preston driving around the Hall in their Ford Thunderbird convertibles. Both are Bluffton High graduates and are now Engineering students at Elon University. You also may have met Kierstyn through her very successful pet sitting business. She’s only 12 but quite the entrepreneur. Every time she sees a new dog in the neighborhood while walking her pups Brio and Roxy, she is quick to give their human her business card.
“As soon as you drive through the gate, Hampton Hall feels like a vacation resort and has so much to offer. That and its close proximity to great schools and our church made it a perfect match for us.”
immediate and sizable impacts in the community through combined giving. They meet every second month to select a local nonprofit to donate toward. Once selected, each member donates $100 directly to the organization. “The goal is to gather $10,000 for a worthy organization serving our community while the ladies have an opportunity to network and socialize, and it’s all accomplished in a short evening out.”
For fun, they enjoy the variety of exceptional dining options, many local festivals, and of course, the beach. “We’ve found that living near the water and in a community like Hampton Hall brings more frequent house guests than we ever had living in the Midwest. We love that we live in a community where we can host our friends to a stay similar to a resort vacation.”
“The environment of Hampton Hall has allowed our family to be outdoors and active all year long…the pool and the tennis/pickleball courts get plenty of use from us!” declared Natalie. Brian was quick to add, “…and I’m still chasing par on the Pete Dye Signature Course! I think the upcoming restoration project will make it one of his best courses…right up there with the Ocean Course at Kiawah! Brent and the crew do a great job of creating a premier golfing experience every time I’m out there.”
The Burnsides stay busy in the local community outside the Hampton Hall gates as well. Natalie works as a Realtor with The Cobb Group at Charter One Realty, which was recently named the 2022 Best Real Estate Team in the Best of Bluffton and Lowcountry’s Best awards. She also recently co-founded “100 Women Giving Back to the Lowcountry,” a group of local women seeking to make

The Golf Gala
by Brent Carlson, PGA Head Golf ProfessionalThere are many highlights throughout the year on our golf calendar, but the Golf Gala is always at the top of my list. After a short awards program recognizing the winners of our golf events, we adjourn for a cocktail followed by dinner and dancing. It is a bit more formal than most events we have, and attendees sure know how to dress the part. We normally see everyone in casual golf attire, so it’s fun to see our group in peak form.
I also enjoy including my family each year. They bring levity to an already special evening. I appreciate all that goes into bringing the Golf Gala to life. From the decorations, which are prepared specifically for the event, to the celebration and comradery, it’s an event I always look forward to.
What a night!

by Matt Sapochak Golf Course SuperintendentHampton Hall Club has been certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Golf Course since January 2013. Audubon International’s certification process is quite complex, requiring various projects to enhance the environment for wildlife as well as a lengthy application. Hampton Hall is one of only 24 golf courses in the state with this certification.
Our main Audubon certification project on the golf course and in the community was installing wood duck and bluebird boxes. The 40 bluebird boxes fill up with birds every year and the 27 wood duck boxes typically house a few ducklings as well.
The certification process also requires the club to establish a Resource Advisory Group. Members of the advisory group help identify potential wildlife projects to help keep our course certified, perform a bird count every year, maintain bird and duck boxes, and are teachers of good environmental stewardship.
Annette Hausman and I currently serve on the Resource Advisory Group and we are in search of additional volunteers. Please consider joining us. If you are a bird lover and enjoy our Lowcountry environment, you will enjoy it!
Please contact me at 843-815-8710 or msapochak@hamptonhallsc.com to learn more about serving on the Resource Advisory Group.

The Benefits of Exercise
Michele DiCarlo, Sports, Recreation and Activities DirectorAs you age, your body naturally loses muscle mass. The good news? You can tone your muscles after 60, or at any other age. To get slender toned arms, you must engage in aerobic exercise to lose fat, and strength training exercises to tone and build muscles.
Your metabolism stays elevated even after you are done exercising, helping you burn more calories even at rest. People who don’t regularly exercise may lose up to 80% of their muscle strength by age 65.
Adults aged 65 and older need at least 150 minutes of moderately intense exercise per week, such as brisk walking. For example, 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week will suffice. They can also participate in 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, such as hiking, jogging, or running. Try to aim for 2 days a week of activity that strengthens muscles.
Weight loss is not the only fitness goal! 80% of Americans who have a gym membership do NOT use the gym (realbuzz. com). You can take your workout anywhere.
Regular exercise has been proven to:
• Lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, two major risk factors for heart disease.
• Improve brain function and increase endorphins
• Boost self-confidence! You will look and feel better.
• Increase sex drive
• Promote better sleep
• Build strong muscles and bones.
• Increase muscle mass = burning more fat while resting
• Increase metabolism
• Relieve stress
• Lessen the risk of falling with increased core strength
It takes about 12 weeks after beginning to exercise to see measurable changes in your body. Don’t get discouraged. Keep going!
Changing up your exercise routine will help you see better results. Doing the same exercises over and over at the same time everyday can lead to a weight loss plateau. Adding weight, changing exercises, increasing reps, etc., will all help with reaching your goal.
SLOW COOKER CHICKEN, KALE, AND SWEET POTATO SOUP
INGREDIENTS
2 large, or 4 small, sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into 1-inch pieces
1 bunch Lacinato kale, stems removed and thinly sliced (2 packed cups)
1-pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
2 32-oz boxes low-sodium chicken stock
2-3 teaspoons kosher salt
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
Extra virgin olive oil, to serve
Makes 4-6 servings
Nutrition per serving: Calories: 175 Carbohydrates: 20g Protein: 19g Fat: 2g
METHOD:
1. Place all the ingredients in a 6-qt slow cooker, stirring to combine. Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the chicken is cooked through and very tender.
2. Remove the chicken and shred with two forks. Return to the slow cooker and stir to combine. Taste and add additional salt to taste. Serve hot with a generous drizzle of olive oil.
Not a fan of kale? You can leave out before serving. Substitute kale with escarole. Add some crunchy bread and freshly grated Parmesan if you like.
Alternatively, you can serve the soup “deconstructed” by picking out some chicken, sweet potatoes, and kale (or substitute raw chopped veggies) separately on a plate along with a little bowl of broth on the side.

The Hampton Hall Fitness Center and Spa is a great way to exercise and benefit from restful spa treatments. If the weather is a bit too cool outside, consider a workout on your own or with our specialized classes and educated trainers. To compliment your day of “me time”, follow up with a restful massage, facial, and a variety of other relaxing spa treatments.
Many studies show serotonin levels increase on average 28% after receiving a massage. Serotonin increase can boost mood and overall wellbeing. Neurotransmitters known as endorphins are released during exercise and massage, which reduce stress, relieve pain, and create a sense of contentment.
You and your holiday guests are invited to take advantage of these benefits by scheduling an appointment or using a gift certificate, which are available for purchase.
FITNESS MEMBER INTERVIEW: HARVEY BEEFERMAN
How long have you lived in Hampton Hall?
I have lived in Hampton Hall for 14 years. What is your daily workout routine?
My daily routine on weekdays starts with a 45-minute walk with friends at 8:15 AM, followed by 8 laps at the indoor pool. After the swim, I head to the fitness center for a 10 minute stretching routine and 5 miles on the stationary bike, often reading the WSJ on my phone. I find that the time goes faster when reading. I finish my routine with 10 minutes of strengthening with weights, balance exercises and 10 sit stands. I take my time and hydrate multiple times. I do the same thing on the weekends, except for the walk. Have you always been active?
Yes. I played tennis 3 times a week for 15 years when I lived in Sea Pines. I walked or cycled on the beach on days I didn’t play tennis. I gave up tennis when I moved to Hampton Hall and started a walking club in 2009.
How has working with a trainer helped you?
About 3 years ago I developed a muscle weakness problem (myositis). My gait changed and my balance was affected. After completing the initial physical therapy, I started personal training. While I regained some strength, I still had balance problems. So after another round of fall prevention, my balance scores improved a lot. I asked the therapist to recommend exercises for personal training, which was very helpful as they focus on balance. I haven’t had a fall in many years. My Dad died from a broken neck after a fall in a parking lot at the age of 92.
Does working out make you feel better?
Working out, walking, swimming and personal training have been extremely helpful. Since January I’ve lost over 20 lbs and have stayed at my goal weight. My balance and gait have improved. A recent heart ultrasound, done every 2 years, has shown a steady improvement in ejection fraction from barely normal, 55, to over 70. I credit that to my daily swimming routine. I’ve just donated all my waist 38 pants to Goodwill, now a 36. I weighed about 260 in January 2009 when I started the walking club and now am 190.
I think living in Hampton Hall has been critical to my success. It has a terrific fitness center with an indoor pool, flat and safe sidewalks, and friendly folks for companionship and encouragement.
And, critical to my success is my loving wife Eileen who, in addition to encouragement, used her nutrition expertise in providing healthy meals and snacks. Who knew the wonder of vegetables and salads?

HAMPTON HALL CHARITABLE FUND
Our “Cheers For Charity” themed inaugural wine tasting event was held on October 8. We welcomed more than a dozen wine vendors and well over 110 Hampton Hall Members. Participants sampled wines from a variety of national vineyards while enjoying an outstanding spread of appetizers and desserts provided by our culinary team. Attendees were given the opportunity to order wines at a reduced price and over $20,000 in wine purchases were made by Hampton Hall residents.
The gentlemen enjoyed a cigar bar and local organizations provided gifts that were raffled to attendees. Proceeds from this event, including a portion of the wine sales, will benefit the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund grants program, which are awarded to local charitable organizations focusing on the needs of those in Beaufort and Jasper counties.
For the holiday season, we have our annual Toy Drive on December 10, followed by the fourth annual “Holiday Open House Tour” on December 4. Look for additional details online.
The Charitable Fund would like to extend a sincere thank you to our supportive community, volunteers, and sponsors who graciously lend us their time and effort with our fundraising efforts. We truly appreciate all that you do.
Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated at our events. Please contact our Chairwoman, Denise Cadres, at dcadres@aol.com or visit our website at hamptonhallclubsc.com/charitable-fund to learn how you can support the Hampton Hall Charitable Fund.
The Hampton Hall Charitable Fund continues to plan and work diligently to support the needs of our surrounding communities.

Memory Matters Speaker Event
Hosting a Hampton Hall Block Party
By Penny Hearn, Member since 2019More than 40 of Hampton Hall’s Hampstead Avenue neighbors (and new nearby neighbors) enjoyed their second annual neighborhood block party on a beautiful late October afternoon, socializing with new and established neighbors and feasting on mouth-watering, home-cooked delicacies, ranging from egg rolls, meatballs and salads to decadent desserts. Anne Marie Gualtieri, Penny Hearn, Bonnie Mathisen and Nancy Bader coordinated the event.
Suggestions for coordinating a block party:
Divide tasks among four or five volunteers: selecting a site, date, time and rain date; collecting email addresses; creating a flyer and manning the name tag table.
• Limit the size of your group, to encourage socializing.
• Have neighbors bring their own beverages, chairs and a dish to share with the group.
• Supply utensils, paper plates, napkins, ice and trash bags.
• Decorate and set up tables with inexpensive tablecloths and divide appetizers, main dishes and desserts.
• Use name tags with addresses to help in identifying neighbors.
• Be flexible about including new nearby neighbors, especially young families.
