A SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE MIGHT KILL YOU WITH CANCER, STUDY SAYS

It was found that patients who sit for long and don’t move about much had a 52 percent risk of dying from cancer compared to people who are active and don’t live a sedentary lifestyle.

You have to exercise regularly to stay active and get over the sedentary living. If you begin to stretch your working hours every day, it would make you obese and you might end up falling sick with several diseases in your body.

A group of scientists from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston said that living a sedentary life is risky and they conducted their study by collecting data of 8,002 adults aged 45 years and older. They saw an increase in the risk from 1 percent to 127 percent.

According to the study, after living a sedentary lifestyle, the findings say that the amount of sedentary behavior increases the risk of people dying out of cancer. Researchers suggest that adults should keep moving and stand as much as they sit to improve the longevity of life.

Similar to this study, a similar submission of the experiment with 8002 adults was made and the highest number of death cases related to cancer were due to living a sedentary lifestyle.

According to Healthline, the American Cancer Society recommended exercising 150 minutes every week. A few people in the U.S. follow a healthy lifestyle and reach this target.

WHAT DO THE RESEARCHERS SAY?

All the researchers put accelerometers for participants to track their activity levels for 7 days. After this was done, after 5 years, 268 patients died due to cancer.

Apart from this, they found out that people who were or are continuously live a sedentary lifestyle suffer almost 36% risk of cancer mortality when compared to other women.

l Alcohol consumption habits a person would feel if they were less sedentary is by replacing the idea of sitting in one place with an effective physical activity for 30 minutes.

For the ones who vigorously worked out, this decreased the mortality rate of cancer by 31% and for the people who chose a light exercise, it lowered the risk by 8%.

JAMA Oncology has details of this research. When one of the patients was having a conversation with a doctor, he told the patient clearly that walking for a few minutes, standing up for 5 minutes after every 1 hour, or climbing the stairs would be like taking small steps towards getting over a sedentary lifestyle.

Therefore, sitting less and moving more is known to improve the longevity of life. The researchers collected information from the participants around 6 years back and they hoped to see a change in the activity levels of the participants.

During this time, they assumed that the cancer mortality risk could have changed to some extent. For example, the participants would have stopped smoking in 6 years.

Additionally, in this study, they were unable to break down the risks of sedentary behavior based on the type of cancer.

Having said, in one of the previous studies they found that sedentary behavior increases the risk of certain cancers when compared to the others.

Scientists are still researching and trying to understand how a sedentary lifestyle could bother specific cancers.
