ST OSWALD’S FAMILY FUN DAY Sat 7th Aug, 1:00 - 4:00pm St Oswald’s Church To celebrate its patronal festival (the feast day of St Oswald on Thurs 5th Aug) St Oswald’s Church is holding a family fun day. There will be donkey rides, a bouncy castle, a tombola, a St Oswald treasure hunt, a pizza van, an ice cream van, hot and cold drinks and a raffle with great prizes from local businesses. We are also holding a gift day/weekend and church will be open concurrently with this event. There will be live music and an opportunity to make donations to church funds. Like many charities, our finances have taken a massive hit due to the pandemic. We are reliant on community support to keep our church open, as we receive no outside funding. OVER WYRE GARDENING CLUB After much discussion the committee has decided to cancel this year’s Flower Show which was provisionally booked for Wed 18th Aug. Flower shows need a fair amount of organising and with the added requirements due to the Covid pandemic we decided that the most sensible decision was to cancel. As I wrote last month there will be a need for new committee members for 2022 so if any members would like further information about the committee please give me a call. Let’s hope that next year things will be more normal and we can return to our usual Gardening Club meetings. Joyce Wilson 01253 813519

OWSAC I do hope you are all keeping well and managing to enjoy all this lovely sunshine. If you can manage a little walk around the village, you will see some really lovely gardens, so well cared for and full of flowers - a real credit to their owners. What’s more you will benefit from being in the fresh air, and having some exercise at the same time. Meanwhile watch this space for news of our opening day. Take care and stay safe. Penny Drabble

Congratulations to all three for their excellent paintings. It was great to see everyone painting again and the high standard of all our work surprised the judges. When Brian Halligan came for two consecutive weeks advising on figure and portrait drawing, this was an opportunity to learn so much. We had live models also and interesting to see how different mediums were used ranging from charcoal to acrylics. Sandra followed with ‘Still Life with a Difference’. Everyone was asked to bring a piece of fruit. A variety of other items were revealed for each person to select two more to make an unusual arrangement. The paintings were very impressive and different of course! Next was a traditional paint-along of a scene in Tuscany. Jonathon Leigh, our guest artist, made this an enjoyable afternoon advising us at each stage of the acrylic painting. He gave so many tips yet still managed to gee us along to finish in two hours. Phew! What an achievement on both sides. Well we have had a successful July. Here is our August programme and then we have a short break starting again mid September. You can still come along to try us out at St Oswald’s Parish Hall on a Wednesday from 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Contact me for more details. •

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB Garstang & Over Wyre At last we have been able to have a face-toface. committee meeting. In full compliance with Covid restrictions, we took advantage of good weather to meet in the garden of our incoming president, Mary Bolland. Mary thanked outgoing president, Maureen Garstang for her outstanding dedication to the club over two years. Maureen has managed to keep us all both enthusiastic and connected with each other as we tackled the vagaries of all things ‘Zoom’. Mary presented Maureen with a small token of appreciation on behalf of the club. All General Plumbing Work Repairs - Maintenance Leaks - Bursts Bathroom Installations Tiling - Cladding Guttering Central Heating incl. Unvented

President Mary was then installed by Maureen who said she was now ready for a well-earned rest. President Mary gave a short outline of her programme for the coming year and will present it in more detail when the whole club meets soon. A jacob’s join afternoon tea was enjoyed with lots of talk of freedom day.

PREESALL FIRE STATION Recently the crew have been to road traffic collisions, some cooking incidents and have assisted North West Ambulance service to enter a person’s property so they could receive medical care. All members of the crew live or work within five minutes of the fire station and respond immediately when their pager sounds. The hot weather is going to continue. We really want you to enjoy it but please be careful when near the beach as the tide can come in very fast. Never leave children unattended or take your eyes off them whilst on the beach. Remember the sea is colder than it looks and the current is stronger than it looks. Never swim alone and make sure someone is there to help you if you need it. Do not go too far from the shore and find a

lifeguarded swimming site #BeWaterAware We have recently seen discarded BBQs dotted around the beach and local parks. This is the time of year that people are tempted into having BBQs in picnic areas. Please never take a BBQ on to grassland or light a small fire to keep yourself warm if camping, - no matter how safe you think you are. One small flame, spark or bit of heat can cause another Winter Hill incident. Preesall fire cadets are recruiting over the summer holidays. If you know of any teens, ages 13 – 18 years old, that would like to join, please look up the Lancashire Fire and Rescue website under fire cadets for more information. This is a unique opportunity to learn how to fight fires, cut up cars, work a fire engine and support your community in local events. Our recruitment campaign has closed until the end of the year but that does not stop you

A date for your diary - Mon 9th Aug, 7:30pm. The speaker will be Bill Nelson. His topic, ‘Tales of an Auctioneer’.

Wed 4th Aug, 7:30pm St Oswald’s Parish Hall

Bill has asked that we each bring an unusual object that he will try to identify and value. As this is the first meeting of our new season we will be celebrating with light refreshments. Please note, we will not be meeting at Hambleton United Reformed Church Hall as it is not available. Each member will be informed individually of where the venue will be. Hope you are keeping well and not suffering in this unusual heat. Do keep in touch by phone or email and if you need any help, contact a member of the committee. For further information please contact: Gaynor t: 01253 702980 e: gaynor2386@hotmail.com

We have now scheduled our first post-Covid meeting. Certain measures will still be in place – there will be a one-way system for entrance and exit, everything will be well spaced and cleaned and refreshments will only be served at tables. Our speaker will be Roger Lloyd Jones, who will introduce ‘Songs from the Musicals’. Our competition will be for the ‘Best Decorated Covid Mask’! We are all very much looking forward to getting together and catching up. But of course, we will have to be sensible and remember to follow any guidance. We always welcome new members, so if you would like to join us for an interesting and fun evening, just turn up and introduce yourself. Janet Astley 01253 467978

CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG Matthew Hesmondhalgh Memorial Fund June was a hive of activity for us here at Matt’s Fund but we were absolutely delighted to take time out to receive a cheque for an astounding £1,000 from Marion and Mark at Best Wishes in Garstang. This was raised from the sales of Garstang Lights scenic Christmas cards (both at Best wishes and at Houghton’s Garage), which featured fabulous photos of Garstang in winter, generously provided by Mike Coleran. The proceeds from sales of protective face coverings also went towards the total. Thank you to all who have helped achieve this amazing amount which will enable 20 young people to be tested and especially to Mark and Marion for everything they do for the charity and community. The month ended in a very poignant manner as fellow CRY fundraiser, Heather Reid paid tribute to our much missed son on her year-

long challenge in memory of her daughter, Alex, and many others who have also lost their lives so tragically young. Heather has been running 624 miles as this is the approximate number of young people who fall victim to Young Sudden Cardiac Death each year, and, whilst running along the beautiful Chesterfield canal, she paused from covering a mile in Matt’s memory. Heather stopped at lock number 22, Matt’s age when he died. In her own words ‘It was tranquil and the perfect spot to take a few moments to think about your precious son’. We feel very honoured by this lovely gesture from Heather and wish her well with her fundraising endeavours. July too has seen a very thoughtful act of kindness with the Catterall Bloomers’ Crazy Daisy team creating beautiful artwork in the Pickering’s bus shelter in memory of Matthew, recalling his love of daisies and forget-me-nots. This was his very last stop in Catterall from where he travelled to ‘Owd Nells on that fateful night so it makes their efforts all the more moving and humbling. If you’re walking around the village do have a look at all the bus stops if you can, they are vibrant and delightful. Thank you very much for doing this and to all the team for all you do to brighten up our lovely village. The month has certainly brought its fair share of sunshine, and on a glorious July day 16 year old Dexter Dunford celebrated his birthday by completing a sky dive together with Mark Jones at the Black Knights, Cockerham. The intrepid pair raised a magnanimous £280 for CRY at the same time! Well done guys and thank you, it was a fabulous spectacle, but we’ll definitely be well and truly keeping our feet on the ground. Mid July was hot, hot, hot and our market stall on the high street raised a scorching £409. Thank you to everyone who donated, visited and helped. Our next outing is on Sun 1st Aug, when

we’ll be joining the team of St Luke’s Church, Winmarleigh at their table top sale at Cabus Village Hall from 9:00am – 2:00pm If you’d like to support the fund but are not able to get out and about then please consider joining our on-line lottery page. Go to www.wyrelottery.co.uk and search for CRY. You’d be supporting local CRY heart screening, other local charities and you never know you might join our list of winners! For those entering before Sat 28th Aug there’s a chance to win a luxury forest staycation as well as the £25,000 jackpot and smaller cash prizes too.

Here we are already in August. Sunny days, warm, balmy evenings - just the ticket for camera users, or is it? Too much sun during the day can cause problems. Better the early bird or the late owl for better images.

As I write this, the club is preparing to join the Garstang Show by having a stall to show ourselves to the general public and maybe attract some new members. It will give visitors a taste of what we are about.

GARSTANG CAMERA CLUB (cont) We cater for all tastes and levels, so if you are going to the show, come in and see who and what we are. You are more than welcome. We still have three events cup visits remaining on our calendar: •

Wed 11th Aug, 6:00pm: Visits to Heysham

Sat 18th Sept, 8:00am onwards: Silverdale/Arnside

Tues 12th Oct, 10:00am: Rufford Old Hall/Martin Mere

We begin our new year back at the Arts Centre on Wed 1st Sept at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, but there is a charge of £5 for nonmembers, which if membership is taken up, is deducted from the membership fee. Finally, and without mentioning the dreaded c---d word, we will have ‘opened up’ from Mon 19th July but I for one will remain vigilant in every respect. It will be a long time before

we can use the phrase coined by the Stones, ‘It’s all over now’. As I draw this to a close, I wish everyone a good summer but ask you all still to take care. Maurice Baker

NORTH FYLDE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOC August 2021 Programme We are still doing free Zoom meetings on Tuesday evenings, so we can stay in touch and talk about our photography. There will be outings for the club, details of which will be posted on our Facebook page. There will be an online exhibition every month showing our club members’ pictures. Tues 31st Aug: Watch This Space! Depending on government guideline we might be able to open our club for meetings. KNOTT END RAILWAY The group now seems to be steaming along nicely. Ideas and meetings are proving positive. Again my thanks to Mr Harold Elletson for his continued support and providing somewhere to hold our meetings and have a cuppa. Thanks also to Leanne Murray for cracking the whip and to Aileen Cameron for the lovely display in the barber’s window. Plus to the barber for allowing it to happen. And not forgetting Dawn’s Tearoom & Bakery for having the kettle on. The railway is soon to have a mascot which will visit schools and libraries teaching children about staying safe as well as adventures on the railway. So watch this space. Raymond Langford

We have been working with the Rotary Club of Gorkha (a major centre for many Gurkha soldiers) for many years on water supply projects. The Delta Variant of Covid has spread rapidly in rural Nepal triggered by the enforced return of poor migrant workers from India. Our funds are now with Rotary Club of Gorkha and are being used to provide medical equipment and personal supplies for people in an isolation unit which they have set up to try and control the spread of the virus. These people have no access to vaccinations or oxygen. Some of the money will fund the purchase of oxygen concentrators.

ROTARY CLUB (cont) have funded the construction of 60 sand dams to date, along with major improvements in land utilisation and farming. In June, on behalf of clubs in Cumbria and Lancashire we donated £10,000 to a new sand dam project. For all our projects we deal directly with the local Rotary Club and a charity organisation, ASDL (Africa Sand Dams Ltd). We have agreed to support the Nzeluni Earth Dam SHG (self help group). There are three villages involved: 1,272 people locally, 1,522 in the sub-location and 6,280 in the location. To achieve this it will be combining funds from four Rotary UK districts. The balance will come from non-Rotary benefactors. As we enter the midsummer and cautiously start to return to a time that seemed so much more vibrant, it is easy to forget the troubles of our world, both at home and abroad, when we have all had to deal with a thousand tragedies, shared or personal, that disease and isolation have inflicted. Last October I was elected as generalsecretary for the United Nations Association UK - Youth Platform (UNA-YP). As the youth-wing of UNA-UK, the independent authority on the UN in our country, we have one goal: to empower, educate, and ensure representation for the young people of Britain at the international level. There are many ways that we do this. We coordinate the efforts of every University UN association in the UK and provide a forum upon which updates, issues and solutions can be raised, debated and voted into enaction. Secondly, we host a wide variety of events each month, ranging from guest speaker interviews to skills workshops, and galas. Our crowning achievement is our annual youth summit which brings ambassadors, diplomats, youth delegates and activists from across the globe together for a day to interact with our members. This year has seen us host speakers ranging from James Watt, ambassador to Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon during the Arab Spring, to Richard Mills, deputy US ambassador to the UN. If you are a young person (15-24), there is no better way to explore and fast-track a future in International Affairs or politics than UNAYP. Dearest to my heart, however, are our flagship projects: The United Nations and UNESCO Youth Delegate Programmes. Through this national campaign, we seek to achieve a

UN YOUTH PLATFORM (cont) historic mission: persuading local politicians and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to approve the support and reinstatement of a youth delegation to the UN and UNESCO headquarters in New York and Paris. If we are successful, a handful of youths shall be afforded the opportunity to participate actively in high-level international meetings on behalf of the group of people perhaps left behind the most over these past two years: young people like themselves. These delegates would spend several weeks each year attending UN conferences and reporting their findings and inspirational stories back to schools across the UK. So where does Wyre fit into this? Rather I find myself asking: ‘How can we make our area a national centre of the UN?’ I have just graduated from university and have been lucky enough to discover the wonderful community of Garstang and the surrounding

area. My parents were kind enough to move here from the Fylde whilst I was gone! Here, more than anywhere else, clearly shines the spirit of humanitarianism and excellence – Garstang declared itself as the UK’s first Fairtrade town back in 2000. Whether it be through bonds of charity, of faith or caretaking for our natural landscape, there is a spirit across the Wyre that radiates the hopes of the UN Charter: a people committed to making their world a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous place for their children to live in. Wyre can be the springboard for a great reawakening of these ideals. But as we try to accomplish this, we need your grassroots support. As UNA-YP moves to form a local movement, we are looking for volunteers both young and established to aid us in our local campaigning activities. We are planning to hold a fundraiser for our delegate programme at Scorton Charity Teas on Sun

We were all glad to be back to (socially distanced) face-to-face escapades – and for a chance to meet our two newest members in real life! This was an excellent venue for our first trip out as Gresgarth has a very big Sequoia tree (alongside a relatively small Soroptimist). In 1921, the first Soroptimist club, Alameda

County was formed in California with over 80 business and professional women from in and around the city of Oakland. Their first project was to ‘Save the Redwoods’ – the great ancient trees which were being felled and the club lobbied the legislature, taking on powerful lumber companies and winning public support which resulted in a major portion of the forest being set aside as protected land that still exists today. Small steps, big difference. 100 Afternoon Delights Then to keep the floral theme, by the time you read this, there will hopefully have been a wonderful gathering of the club members, family and friends in President Kathy’s garden for an afternoon tea (a word about my scone, by the way; yes, the jam goes on first). He has since had surgery to remove the diseased part of his ear flap and is doing much better. WYRE VILLA

We had our AGM on Zoom to avoid meeting indoors as we have pursued Covid avoidance with social distancing and sanitising.

We have had some testing friendlies in the past month against higher level opposition that should set us up well for the start of the new season.

The district commissioner for Wyre District Scouts, Jon Minshull, came to visit us at the end of June to meet us face-to-face as we had only seen him on Zoom. He presented the chairman with a special award - the Chief Scouts Commendation Award Certificate for Good Service to scouting. Our group has been re-opened for 12 years and has been very successful with an excellent team of leaders and helpers. We cater for boys and girls aged six to 14 years.

Our highlight was the 4-2 win over semi-pro side, Padiham with our new signing Dion Holden scoring a hat-trick. May we extend a warm welcome to the new faces who have turned up to watch the Villa teams in our pre-season friendlies. The home fixtures for both teams are listed below. HAMBLETON COUNCIL (cont) to the agenda. Hambleton in Bloom Back in July Hambleton was judged for the annual In Bloom competition. Councillors and volunteers all worked hard to prepare the village and it really did look good on the day. Thanks go out to all those involved. Keeping the village looking ‘blooming’ is not easy and volunteers are always needed. If you have some spare time and would like to help the village please contact the Clerk. Best Kept Village Following an inspection by Wyre Council engineers it has become apparent that, following recent vandalism, the bus shelter at Ryecroft Corner (used when travelling to Poulton) is damaged beyond repair and is due to be removed. Sadly there is no money in the budget to replace the shelter at this time. The Parish Council are in discussions with Wyre Council to ensure funds are available in 2022/23 to fund a replacement. Councillors recently walked around the village looking to identify areas that needed repair etc. One concern was the number of gardens where vegetation eg hedges, was hanging over pavements, making safe walking difficult or over the actual highways, in effect, narrowing roads and obstructing views at junctions. Can you please ensure that all vegetation from your garden is cut back to the line of your property to avoid difficulties for pedestrians and vehicles. STALMINE/STAYNALL COUNCIL Planning Battle A concerted move is under way over the growing number of breaches of planning permission in Over Wyre. Together with neighbouring colleagues, Stalmine councillors are concerned by what appears to be a lack of enforcement action by Wyre Council, the planning authority. The parishes are to make their feelings known to Wyre in the hope of prompting that council into more effective action against those who do not conform to planning regulations. Speeding Action The council has been asked by a member of the public if it would consider providing speed cameras for the village. There are two options: fixed cameras or a portable camera. No funds are allocated for such a project in this year’s budget, but councillors have been asked to consider preliminary investigations

Great news: WBC rejected the resubmitted planning application for the 2 x 80 bed care homes plus another 50+ houses in Stalmine. Many thanks to all of you who contacted and supported us in this. Thanks also go to Peter Swarbrick, our SSRA vice-chairman, who researched and scripted our lengthy and detailed objection paper, to Cllr John Shedwick, our LCC councillor, our WBC councillor, Julie Robinson and our parish councillor Alan Morton. All attended the meeting and spoke against the application. WBC voted unanimously against it. Wonderful news for Stalmine. Such is the power of working together. However, Peter noticed that a recent Facebook article wrongly described them as retirement homes. We are watching closely! Following recent requests from residents, we have contacted Highways about Harwood and Malvern road surfaces. They are in a dreadful state. Readers will recall that after three years of contacting and reminding Lancashire County Council, we were successful in getting Lynwood Drive resurfaced. We have now asked that Harwood and Malvern be resurfaced during the current and massive LCC road surfacing schedule. We again sent photos with our request and it is now under consideration. Fingers crossed.

WYRE COUNCIL New Summer Holiday Clubs Wyre Council is launching a programme of free activities this summer for children on benefits-related free school meals. The local summer holiday clubs are part of the Government’s Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF). Backed by a nationwide investment of up to £220 million, the programme will enable children and young people to enjoy fun activities with friends and learn and develop new skills. A range of clubs across Wyre will run until Fri 20th Aug and will be free for primary and secondary aged school children who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals. The sessions include a variety of fun activities alongside a nutritious meal each day. They are a great opportunity for young people to get out and about, get active and meet new friends. There is plenty to enjoy including arts and crafts, cooking, bowling, kayaking, football and much more, as well as activities for children with special educational needs or disabilities. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, ‘We are pleased to be able to offer this summer holiday programme to eligible families this year. ‘After what has been an incredibly difficult 18 months for many of us, children especially have been impacted by the pandemic and this programme allows them to enjoy their summer by taking part in activities with friends safely.’ Children and Families Minister Vicky Ford said: ‘Our pioneering Holiday Activities and Food programme has been expanded nationwide this year for the first time, so it will benefit many more children than ever before. This year, especially, I want children to make the most of their school holidays, so I’m thrilled that there is so much support and enthusiasm for the programme. This

CAT SMITH MP (cont) agreed to reform the benefits system for terminally ill people. I lost a close friend to motor neurone disease and was determined others shouldn’t have to face financial worries while living with a terminal illness. I’ve therefore been heavily involved with the ‘Scrap 6 Months’ campaign and finally, in response, the government has pledged to make it easier for people with a terminal illness to get fast-track access to financial support. This will include making it easier for clinicians to confirm eligibility. Crucially, the government has said it will reform the rule which stipulated that people must prove they have six months or less to live before receiving fast-track access to the benefits many desperately need. This will make a huge difference to people with life-limiting conditions, easing financial worries in the last months of their lives and crucially allowing people to enjoy the time o We als ton s g lo in supply of logs & ets bags, n firegrates g, n e kindli h mor m & uc

CAT SMITH MP (cont) inspiring and exciting event for thousands of children. But the new conservative administration at Lancashire County Council has dropped the proposal which is devastating for all those people who knew how transformative it would have been. Arts Council funding is significantly lower in Lancashire than in comparable counties and cities and there is an inequality in quantity and scale of major arts organisations.

been proved, when one area like Fleetwood begins to regenerate it has a knock-on effect on neighbouring areas like Over Wyre. This summer, myself, along with Wyre Council and a whole host of talented partners, have submitted a request for £8.56m in the hopes the government will finally recognise that Fleetwood is in desperate need of support and funding.

Fleetwood Regeneration

Last year the government announced it would invest up to £830 million to help areas recover from the pandemic and to help transform underused town centres into vibrant places to live, work and shop. Wyre Council submitted a bid for £22 million but on Boxing Day the government confirmed the council had been unsuccessful in attracting funding.

I’m very pleased to have been involved in putting together a bid for ‘levelling up’ funding from the government to begin the regeneration of Fleetwood. As has so often

This was utterly astonishing. There are wards in Fleetwood that are some of the most deprived in the country. At least 20 per cent of children live in poverty. More than a third

Please, if you think this decision is wrong, write to Phillippa Williamson, the leader of Lancashire County Council and ask her to reverse the decision.

CAT SMITH MP (cont) of working age people have no qualifications and the town has the lowest life expectancy of 65 to 77 as shown on the index of multiple deprivation 2019. High rates of smoking cause high rates of lung disease and cancer, drug deaths, alcohol-related harm, significant levels of mental health issues and a high suicide rate all contribute towards people in Fleetwood living shorter lives. Given all these factors, I just couldn’t understand why Fleetwood wasn’t chosen. But the important thing is – we haven’t given up and I’m desperately hoping that this time around we’ll be more successful. The purpose of the Levelling Up Fund (LUF), announced at the 2020 Spending Review, is to invest in local infrastructure that has a ‘visible impact on people and their communities’. I hope the decision makers in London understand that this bid is absolutely critical if Fleetwood and neighbouring areas are to enjoy the same

job opportunities, educational opportunities, access to services and transport links that other towns boast. Our proposal includes three projects focussing on Fleetwood Market, Fleetwood Museum and the Fleetwood Port Redevelopment site. The Fleetwood Market project would revive the derelict land just next to the market creating a new workspace for commercial creative business. The plans utilise repurposed sustainable shipping containers to create an interesting contrast to the adjacent Victorian Market Hall providing flexible start-up spaces for local businesses, classroom sites, meeting rooms and collaborative working spaces. The plans for Fleetwood Museum include a fully accessible new visitor centre on the existing site allowing us to attract more visitors to the town. A new entrance will link Queens Terrace and Custom House Lane with the creation of a new ‘pocket park’ funded through the existing Heritage Action Zone. Fleetwood Port will see the redevelopment of derelict waterfront land with new flood defences to improve the seafront of the town by creating a coastal park for residents and visitors. The vision is to revive this gateway into Fleetwood and provide waterside views across the estuary with new pedestrian and cycle routes along the coast and into the town centre – and the new flood defences mean new houses can be built – including affordable and specialist housing. I hope this will be the start of a new era for Fleetwood – one where the people of the town can start to see improvements that become a catalyst for change. For the last decade our coastal towns have been ignored and forgotten about. Whilst the Covid pandemic has been exceptionally challenging for everyone – there have been a few positives such as the potential for British holidaymakers to enjoy more staycations, meaning resorts

GARSTANG WALKING FESTIVAL

PREESALL FLEETWOOD’S CHARITY

Sat 28th Aug to Wed 1st Sept

The School on the Hill

There will be lots to enjoy and something for all abilities. Councillor Lynne Bowen, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Health and Community Engagement at Wyre Council comments, “Despite having to delay the festival this year due to the current pandemic restrictions we look forward to welcoming visitors back with a festival worth waiting for. After such a long time in lockdown, it will be the perfect way to rediscover Wyre including the beautiful scenery, heritage and of course the friendliest walk guides!“

Well we have made it to the end of the year and what a year it has been!

We’re grateful to the Friends group for all their hard work, and these taster walks will give people a lovely opportunity to explore different parts of Wyre. There are some nice easy rambles and some more challenging walks, so something for everyone to enjoy. www.wyre.gov.uk

During the last term, we tried to give the pupils as normal a school experience as we could – here are a few of the highlights. We held our annual Public Speaking Competition where all pupils from Year 2 to Year 6 deliver a talk on a subject of their choice, to their class. Three finalists from each year group then competed in a final on Zoom and the quality of the presentations was amazing – especially Year 6! Yvonne McCann, who is a school governor, had the very difficult task of judging. The overall winner was Adam Eastwood whose talk was on his Year 6 residential trip to York. Our Year 3/4 pupils took part in another beach clean at Knott-End. They have been learning about the environmental impact of

Sarah Wragg, class teacher, was successful in a recent bid to the Moon’s Charity Trust so she was able to purchase ‘Plastic Pirates’ hoodies for all the class and we will be ordering a Litter Picking Station for school. We were delighted to win second place in the Preesall and Knott-End Scarecrow Competition with our Harry Potter entry. The scarecrows were made by our Year 5 and 6 pupils and we thought they looked fabulous! In the last week of school, we held a whole school picnic on our playing field. It was a beautiful day and it was lovely for the whole school community to be together one last time before the summer holiday. We said goodbye to two members of staff who are moving on and also to our Year 6 leavers. We were lucky to be able to hold a leavers’

service at St. Oswald’s Church for our Year 6 pupils and their parents. Father Andy Shaw led the service and Year 6 shared their favourite memories; performed a fabulous class dance and several pupils performed musical pieces. We would like to wish Year 6 lots of luck for the next phase of their learning journey – they are an amazing group – they are confident, independent and talented – I am sure they will all be successful in the future. Our final Celebration Assembly took place on Zoom and we were joined by parents and governors. Many pupils received awards for a whole range of reasons: music, dance, academic success, fantastic behaviour, sports, creativity, Science and Maths. We have also introduced a Pupils’ Choice Award where the pupils got to nominate a pupil in their class who they thought had followed our school rules: Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Brave – really well all year and had been good role models to other pupils. We had four pupils achieve their Platinum Dojo Award which means they have earned an impressive 400 points during the school year! Our current Head Boy and Girl Team interviewed Year 5 pupils to establish our new team for next year. I am pleased to announce that our new head Boy is Alfie Lion and our new Head Girl is Erin Pollard. I look forward to working with them both, alongside their deputies and the new School Council next year. On the last day, the local ice-cream van paid a visit to school, much to the delight of the pupils and staff! We all enjoyed an ice-cream on the grass as a reward for working hard all year. Year 6 had a final session of forest school on their last day which included pizza in the forest and marshmallows on the camp fire. I think this is the area of school that they will miss the most!

Having come from a domestic environment, the birds are easy prey. If you have unwanted cockerels or hens, please contact your local RSPCA centre to find out how to re-home them. Please do not abandon them. www.rspca.org.uk

BENEFITS OF EXERCISING For Seniors & Ageing Adults You may have heard it time and again: physical activity and exercise are good for you, and you should aim to make them part of your routine. But did you know that regular physical activity and exercise for older adults helps improve mental and physical health, both of which help you maintain independence as you age. Whether you are new to exercise or haven’t exercised in a while, you are never too old to start and enjoy the benefits. There are countless studies that prove the important health benefits associated with exercise, and it becomes more important as we age. overall immune function, which is important for seniors as their immune systems are often compromised. Even light exercise, such as walking, can be a powerful tool for preventable disease management. Decreased Risk of Falls Older adults are at a higher risk of falls, which can prove to be potentially disastrous for maintaining independence. Exercise improves strength and flexibility, which also help improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls. Seniors take much longer to recover from falls, so anything that helps avoid them in the first place is critical. Improved Cognitive Function Regular physical activity and fine-tuned motor skills benefit cognitive function. Studies suggest a lower risk of dementia for physically active individuals, regardless of when you begin a routine. Improved Mental Health The mental health benefits of exercise are nearly endless. Exercise produces endorphins (the ‘feel good’ hormone), which act as a stress reliever and leaves you feeling happy and satisfied. In addition, exercise has been linked to improving sleep quality and quantity, which is especially important for older adults who often suffer from insomnia and disrupted sleep patterns. It’s Social and Fun Whether you join a walking group, go to group fitness classes or visit a gardening club, exercise can be made into a fun social event. Maintaining strong social ties is important for us to feel a sense of purpose and avoid feelings of loneliness or depression. Above all, the key is to find a form of exercise you love, and it will never feel like a chore again. Liz Kiersey t: 07519650142 e: lizkiersey@hotmail.com

NUISANCE SEAGULLS Areas of Wyre are once again experiencing problems with seagulls causing a nuisance. Feeding the seagulls is exacerbating the problem so residents are urged not to encourage them by offering scraps of food. The birds become a nuisance as they quickly learn where there are sources of food. The birds can become aggressive if they realise that people are likely to have food. It is better for both people and seagulls if we refrain from feeding these seabirds. They do not prosper on a diet of bread, chips and other scraps and quickly become a nuisance. www.rspb.org.uk

end but this pandemic is certainly not over. The vaccination is working at reducing the number of deaths and hospital admissions allowing the hospitals to cope and maintain vital services in this area. We therefore strongly advise you to take the vaccinations when invited. On Mon 27th July the Over Wyre Medical Centre staff were joined by our amazing team of volunteer marshals to conduct a tree planting ceremony in remembrance of all those who have suffered at the hands of this deadly virus. You will now notice at the front of the premises a cherry blossom tree with a plaque which takes pride of place at the foot of the tree. This cherry blossom tree will serve as a permanent reminder of the lives that have been lost during the Covid pandemic. It stands as a tribute to every single key worker and is a symbol of how Over Wyre Medical Centre staff and patients have stood together

The Over Wyre Medical Centre team has administered an incredible 20,000 coronavirus vaccinations from this site. Our initial Covid vaccination campaign has now come to an end – but not for long! On Wed 1st Sept, the flu/covid booster campaign begins. The mass vaccination sites will no longer be operational and primary care networks will be delivering this to their communities. Over Wyre Medical Centre will invite patients to come forward for vaccination. Restrictions are coming to an Tell them you saw it in the “Green Book”

OVER WYRE MEDICAL (cont) to help one another. Long Covid Post Covid Syndrome or ‘Long Covid’ is a newly evolving condition that is being seen after a patient has recovered from the initial infectious condition. Symptoms predominantly include lethargy, shortness of breath and headaches but can also include depression and disturbed sleep. The majority of patients will recover spontaneously within six weeks however, medics are seeing some patients developing a longer lasting post viral fatigue illness. The NHS has set up a useful resource giving advice and guidance to patients and carers suffering with this condition. This can be found at www. yourcovidrecovery.co.uk. Patients who continue to struggle in the longer term may benefit from a referral to a long covid clinic where practical and emotional support can be sought by long covid sufferers. Patients will need tests to exclude other physical illnesses before referral. Weight Management During the pandemic, weight management services became difficult to access, our lives may have become more sedentary and our eating and drinking habits may have become more unhealthy. This combination has been lethal to the nation’s waistlines! The good news is that new services have been commissioned to help our patients with healthy weight management. Patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 qualify for referral. Any patient who would like to utilise this service is urged to calculate their weight at home and telephone the surgery and to ask and consent for the referral to be made.
