ello Joburgers, remember the simple days back in primary school when Valentine’s Day meant giving everyone in your class heart-shaped lollipops? Your mom packed your lunch with chocolate and biscuits and counted all your valentines with your friends. Easy. Simple. Uncomplicated. Fast-forward to now and the February holiday consists of a weird minefield of awkwardness, relationship expectations and definitions … eek! Life is stressful enough, from work or studies to personal lives. Then Valentine’s Day comes and there’s the added pressure of figuring out how to show your love and affection for your someone. But don’t worry – that’s where we come in. When I started planning this February issue, I predicted we’d stick with traditional Valentine’s Day fare, but via a little bit of karma or coincidence, the features in this month’s magazine came together to offer a different take on the meaning of love. You can only imagine my delight! Whether you’re with your squeeze or adventuring solo, we’ve got you covered on the dining out front. Our Restaurant of the Month is finedining restaurant, Qunu at The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa, which is one of the most romantic spots in Joburg … but not in a cliché way. We’ve also reviewed some hidden gems that are sure to impress, from the glamorous AtholPlace Restaurant in Atholl, to the restaurant at the brand-new Giglio Boutique Hotel in Bedfordview. If you’re not a fan of Valentine’s Day, flip to our leisure activities section for what to do on Valentine’s Day if you’re single, or to our nightlife section for our top ideas to have an anti-Valentine’s Day celebration … no matter your age. Of course, we still have our regular features this month, so it isn’t all about Valentine’s Day. In our beauty and wellness section our beauty editor, Bianca has gathered the best beauty products that you actually need, while in arts & culture section we’re sharing public street art in Joburg that has to be seen to be believed. A personal favourite read of mine in this issue is our Backchat – this month we chat to the founders of Africology, one of my all-time favourite skincare and beauty brands.
