– When did you move to Port Royal Plantation? December 2017. We drove through snow flurries the first 8 hours of our two day trip down, reinforcing why we were moving to HHI. Like many folks here, Ken and I enjoyed vacationing on HHI for over 35 years. Moving here after retirement was never even a question. Best decision ever! What is your favorite part about the club? The people and the great social events. Since the club’s creation of the NET NINE AND DINE monthly event, I’ve really enjoyed hitting a golf ball again. I also enjoy Robbers Row Grille for the convenience of having a good restaurant within the plantation...especially during the summer months when we don’t want to fight the island crowds. What is your most unusual talent? The ability to lose $4 dollars at Mah Jongg and walk away happy. Coke or Pepsi? Neither. Iced tea, water or wine. Five minutes of perfect happiness. Toes in the water, butt in the sand, not a worry in the world, a book and a cold drink in my hand. Chocolate or vanilla? Unadulterated Vanilla. Why mess with a perfect scoop. Who is your favorite golfer? Ken Gerth. Three days a week Gadget you cannot live without. A mandolin. The kitchen gadget, not the musical instrument.
Title of your autobiography. Living The Dream. My Flip Flop Life!
The Club’s annual meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 8th at 6:30 at the clubhouse. The bar will be open from 6 until 6:30 for those who wish to imbibe. This meeting includes reports by the PRPC Treasurer, Secretary, President and Heritage General Manager. Additionally, the results of the election of new members of the Board of Governors for 2022 and the vote on changes to the PRPC Bylaws will be announced. Plan on attending, or as a minimum please take the time to vote. You may vote until the day of the meeting. Please see Ted if you need a ballot. October was a banner month for golf and tennis events. The month started off with a very successful Heritage Golf Invitational member/guest tournament. It was the highlight of the sporting year. I want to thank Rick D’Arienzo for spearheading another awesome event. Thanks Rick! It was also championship month with the Men’s Individual Golf Championship being played on the 6th and 11th, the Ladies Nine Holers Championship being played on the 7th and 21st, and the Ladies 18 Holers Championship Stroke Play being played on the 12th and 19th. As of this writing the Racquet Member/Guest Tournament is scheduled to be played on the 29th and 30th. See the individual columns of the Golf, Racquet, 9 & 18 Holer Ladies and the Men’s Golf for all the results. In November, it’s more golf tournaments. The men are playing the 2-Man Match Play Tournament on Nov 3rd, the 8th and the 12th. The 18 Hole Ladies are hosting their Member/Guest Tournament on Nov 8th and 9th and the 9 Hole Ladies holding the Golf Exchange. The co-ed President’s Cup will be played on Nov 13th. On October 13th the New Members Mingle was held at the clubhouse. Every year we welcome the new members of the club with a cocktail social. The invited guests include all new members of the club for the year, their ambassadors, the PRPC Board members, Heritage leadership and everyone’s spouses. We did not hold the event last year because of COVID, so this year’s party was held for both 2020 and 2021 new members. Welcome to all the new members! The last thing I would like to mention is the Concours d’ Elegance. This is the annual car show at the golf course featuring cars from the early 1900s to today’s exotic supercars and everything in between. I hope you have gotten your free ticket and plan on attending. The dates are November 5th through November 7th. One side note is the car show with be held on the driving range and parts of Robber’s Row golf course. Unfortunately, the golf course, driving range and practice area will be closed during the show. Have a great Thanksgiving and see you at the Annual Meeting.

As is the norm, October is a wonderful time of year to be on Hilton Head Island! Except for a few recent storms, the weather has been absolutely phenomenal, and the golf courses remain lush and vivid green. It has certainly been an event-filled month! The 2021 Heritage Member-Guest Golf Invitational was a rousing success, thanks to the herculean efforts of the Heritage Golf Group. Jay and his staff outdid themselves in making this 3-day event exceptionally memorable. Congratulations to Don Muehlberger and his son-in-law, Frank Dyer, for winning their fourth such event! Additionally, the Men’s Club Championship and the annual Ryder Cup Challenge were both recently completed. Each was very well organized and exciting; read more about these events in Nigel’s column. Many more special golf and social events will be forthcoming as we approach the end of 2021. Be sure to read this edition of Around the Clubhouse in its entirety and stay tuned as periodic email blasts come your way. Be advised that we intend to rebalance/reallocate Blocked Tee Times for the member groups. Current tee time allocations, in some cases, are either too great or too few for present demand. Blocked Tee Time allocations vary by season, since weather and travel dramatically impact when and where many of our members play. Revised tee time allocations will take effect in 2022. As always, please pass along any suggestions or concerns you have to Nigel, Polly, Judi or me as we continue to strive for future golf-related improvements.
October was certainly a busy month on the courses, with the Heritage Invitations closely followed by the Club Championship and the annual Ryder Cup. At the Club Championship we had 35 members signed up playing across 4 flights. Day 1 went off without incident, but the second day was postponed due heavy rain. However, we managed to complete day 2 on the following week and crowned our flight winners and our Club Champion. Congratulations to Ron Tucker for great play to shoot a gross 149 and become 2021 Club Champion. Ron narrowly beat Carl Nelson, who scored 150 and was the Championship Flight net score winner. Between them, Ron and Carl have wrapped up the Majors in 2021 so far, with just the 2-Man Match Play Championship in November remaining. In the other flights, congratulations to the winners: Member tees - Charlie Fiedler (147) and Bob Fratarcangelo (148) and Black tees - Kevin Nattrass (156). Charlie made an eagle on #17 on Barony from 150 yards to narrowly beat Rick Keebaugh on a scorecard playoff. The course has benefitted greatly from the rain and fertilizer application recently. Over-seeding of the tee boxes, greens and collars will begin shortly. As we move into the fall and winter season, please be aware that the Bermuda grass will cease to grow – abide by the 90-degree cart rules and avoid driving in the rough in order to protect the dormant grass. Notable dates in the coming 2 months: · 2 Man Match Play Championship: Wednesday 3 November, Monday 8 November, Friday 12 November. Each round of matches must be completed no later than these dates · Super Men’s Day: Wednesday 17 November · Super Men’s Day: Monday 13 December (note the change of date) · Nightmare Nine before Christmas: Friday 16 December
RYDER CUP 2021 The annual Ryder Cup was played on October 16 and October 20. A total of 48 members played across the 2 days and were split into 2 teams, drafted by their member captains Ron Tucker (Team Walker) and Carl Nelson (Team Beauregard). On the evening before the event, we were again able to enjoy the barbecue skills of Mickey Giglio and Marty Schuppert; thanks also go to Lanny Bailey and Jack Schrader, John Gibbs and Kevin Nattrass for supplying the steaks and side dishes. A fun time was had by all. Day 1 play on Robbers Row involved 9 holes of 2-man, best ball match play followed by 9 holes of alternate shot. Matches were closely contested with 5 of the 12 matches tied. However Team Walker managed to edge a narrow lead of 5 points heading into day 2. Day 2 play on Barony involved 9 holes of 2-man Best ball match play and 9 holes of individual match play. There was strong showing from teams on both sides, however Team Beauregard managed to pull a 10 point win on Day 2 and take the overall competition by a narrow margin of 5 points (out of a total of 531 points over the 2 days). Congratulations to Team Beauregard who are 2021 Ryder Cup winners. To add some more fun into the event, we had a short game challenge and closest to the pin (#2 Barony). Congratulations to the respective winners: Tom Brettingen won the nearest the hole (4 feet 9 inches) and Ed Harbauer won the short game challenge. Thanks to all who participated and to the Sport Shop for making this another fun and successful event

This month starts our holiday season with Thanksgiving celebrations. I hope everyone is able to be with family and friends. Bright, sunny, cool days make golf more fun for all of us. Luckily we were able to play our 2 day championship tournament without rain delays. Results will be out in the near future. Thanks to everyone who participated. On September 7th, we had our match play tournament. First place with 7 points each was a tie between Cheryl Moore, Jolanta Taylor and Polly Jackson. Second place with 6 points each was also a tie between Liz Bailey, Tammie Blank, Dinny Cuthbertson and Gay Halleman. On September 28th we had our low gross/ low net tournament. Cheryl Moore won low gross. First low net went to Jolanta Taylor and second low net winner was Becky Guin. Congratulations to all our winners. We've missed having Dinny Cuthbertson with us and have her and Elmer in our thoughts and prayers. Also please remember Wyndom Brown and her family who recently lost her husband, Rob. We have more than twenty ladies signed up for our member/ guest event and we're all looking forward to that. Thanks to Sophie Burger and her committee for planning this. Hope to see all of you on Tuesdays.

9 Holers By Judi Chmielowiec It’s here!! Perfect golf weather has finally arrived!! However, our first Championship Day on October 7 was quite the challenge. Days of rain left the course extremely wet, to the point of mini lakes in some areas of the golf course. But, we persevered and finished the round with some innovative shots. Here we have Jackie Darling hitting from a very precarious lie. Thankfully, our Championship Day 2 on October 14 was a beautiful day. We look forward to revealing the winner at our December 2 Awards Luncheon. What can I say - Cherie Bailey has been a great leader and Director of the Month of October. It has been a challenging month, but Cherie has been keeping us informed and on track. She has planned our Tee Time Dinner at the Club and I know it will be handled perfectly. Our next game on October 21, Cherie has asked all of us to “Go Pink”, in honor of the Pledge the Pink campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness. And as we know, Cherie is a big fan of Halloween and as of this writing, I am sure our Trick or Treat Play Day will be memorable and we better be wearing our costumes! Thank you, Cherie!! I would like to welcome our newest member, Mary Ann Shallcross. We are so happy to have you join us, in what has been a great year of growth in membership. We are truly thankful for such a wonderful group of ladies - now 27 of us!! September 2 - Blind Hole (picked by Pro) - First Place Winner: Tammie Blank; Second Place Tie: Cherie Bailey and Nancy Simpson September 16 - Low Net Tournament Winners will be announced at the end of the year Awards Luncheon September 23 - Low Putts - First Place Tie: Nancy Simpson and Jo Ann Gibbs; Second Place Winner, Karen Simpson and Third Place Winner, Barbara Costalas We had quite a few Chip-In Queen’s recently with Nancy Simpson (pictured right), Georgette Voehringer, Barbara Costalas and Judi Chmielowiec with a Chip-In for Birdie on Robber’s Row No.1. The planning continues for the Exchange on November 11, where our Nine Hole Ladies will host a golf tournament of Nine Hole Ladies from 20 participating clubs. It is always a fun time and ending with a well-planned awards luncheon. Sally Ann is asking everyone to work the tournament, as well as playing in the tournament. Your participation is greatly appreciated! Please feel free to contact me at jwc10201@yahoo.com if you are interested in joining the Nine Holers.
USTA Update The Port Royal Men’s 4.0, sixty-five plus team has made our Racquet Club look good yet again. During the weekend of October 15 through 17, they participated in and won the South Carolina Championship Tournament. This is the same team that also won the seventies tournament back in May. Congratulations again. The competing team includes captains Rick Rickenbach and John Brummitt along with members Tim Arr, Dave Hales, Kent James, Jim Mansfield, Dave Partington, Danny Spar, Rich Silver, Don Steele, and Keith Whitlow. This team was originally formed in 2010 with a couple of additions and subtractions over the years, usually because some players were either bumped up to or came back down from a 4.5 ranking. Since its inception this team has won eight South Carolina State Championships, and eight of these players have been members of all eight championship teams. What a great record! Mark Your Calendars Santa Claus will need lots of help again this year, and the Port Royal Racquet Club needs to be ready for duty. Monday, December 6 is the day. Watch for details to come!
