A Fun-Filled Month

While the May issue you hold in your hands celebrates family, I might argue that we celebrate family every day of every week, all year round. This month we also acknowledge May standout events including the Kentucky Derby, Mother’s Day and Cinco De Mayo. Let’s make it a month of family and fun!

On page 28, we celebrate the places in our homes that bring us joy and discuss what makes them special to us. See the spaces some Berks residents retreat to when they want to smile and relax.

And on page 38 we bring you one of our most popular annual features, our Summer Camp Guide. From arts and sports to equine therapy and service-based camps, there is something for every individual at a camp located right here in Berks.

Back to that Derby. In our The Look feature on page 20, you’ll discover fashion finds for men and women from local retailers that fit the bill. Think fabulous hats, fascinators and more. We’ve even got a mint julep recipe to cap things off.

Speaking of recipes, turn to page 11 for your Cinco De Mayo recipe, a Strawberry Diamond Paloma, courtesy Shirley’s Café & Tequila Bar in Laureldale. We’ve got Mother’s Day gift ideas for you, too. Just flip to page 24.

Cheers to a month of fun!

ONE MORE THING

STAFF SPEAKS

If you could attend the summer camp of your dreams, what three activities would it include?

“Archery, sailing and arts & crafts. I loved camp as a kid!”

"I already worked at, fell in love, and got married at the summer camp of my dreams!"

“Hiking, kayaking and excellent views for stargazing would make an awesome camping experience.”

“My three activities would include: reading, game night and relaxing around the campfire.”

“It definitely wouldn’t be anything involving roughing it or bugs. I’m thinking making and eating smores, chatting around a firepit and long, quiet nights of sleep in a cozy cabin.”

JOIN A STORYWALK® WITH SNOOPY

Through May 26, visitors to the Reading Public Museum’s Arboretum can enjoy a new adventure on the StoryWalk® trail with Charlie Brown’s famed companion, Snoopy. Inspired by Charles Schultz, written by Jason Cooper and illustrated by Vicki Scott, Shoot for the Moon, Snoopy! sees the canine prepare to travel to the moon. He quickly realizes, though, that training for space is hard work…especially when Peppermint Patty and Marcie decide to become his personal coaches. The book is based on the Peanuts partnership with NASA and coincides with the Museum’s featured exhibit, To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA . Upon completing the walk, visitors can stop inside to request an activity bag. The Arboretum StoryWalk® is a collaboration between Berks County Public Libraries and the Reading Public Museum to bring together the joys of reading and the outdoors. Featured titles are bilingual stories that are periodically rotated to align with current Museum exhibitions.

A Different Church Experience

When a few Christians in the Berks County area wanted a different kind of church experience they sought out to make it happen, and Encounter Church in Sinking Spring was born. Explains member and guest speaker Kristen Carder, “We believe the template of most church gatherings lean towards consumerism – where the participant can attend church, sit, listen and leave without truly engaging in the content or connecting with others. As a group, we are responding to that concern by faithfully conducting worship services that provide opportunities for people to engage with the Bible, with worship, with God and with each other in interactive and fun ways.” Carder says the services at Encounter are designed to help people listen, discuss, act, react and interact with the content through hands-on activities. Members meet Sunday evenings at 5pm, and those interested in learning more are welcome to visit. For more info visit encounterchurchberks.com

ALL AGES: GET READY TO RUN

Ready, set – register! The Deena Andrus Memorial: Run For the Ages 10K Trail Chase is set for June 25 in Nolde Forest. The race is unique due to its age-graded start, meaning “older and younger runners get a head-start on the notoriously faster-aged runners in their late teens and early 20s,” says Race Director Donna Hey. It kicks off at 8:30am when fe ma le runners age 75 and older head out, followed by runners launched in age groups every 1-4 minutes with the last group of men ages 20-29 leaving at 9:05am. The overall winner is the first to cross the finish line. The race is named for Deena Andrus as she and her husband, Ted, were avid members of the Pagoda Pacers and fixtures in the local running community. Says Hey, “They lived very close to Nolde Forest and very much enjoyed running the trails there. When Deena passed suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 47, Ted wanted to honor her love of running and Nolde. He and their son, Mark, created the Run For the Ages in her honor with the proceeds split between the Pagoda Pacers and the Friends of Nolde.” Those interested in racing should register through the Pretzel City Sports website, pretzelcitysports.com – NIKKI M. BERKS BITS
8 MAY 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

BERKS HAS GONE TO The Birds

“Clean eats” and farm-to-table trends prevail, despite family mealtime staples soaring in price. If the swelling levy on storebought eggs has ruffled your feathers, ponder this Magnolia-curated daydream: you sip your morning coffee then pad across the lawn to your cozy backyard coop. Channeling your best Joanna Gaines vibes, your basket brims with a softly tinted spectrum of freshly laid organic eggs. Martha Stewart who? Firing up the griddle, you beam, having provided your own brood with a fresh harvest.

WHOLESOME HOMESTEADING

Once viewed as being strictly for the birds, backyard chicken rearing has many changing their tune, and it’s no surprise.

“My kiddos love chicken tending. We do this as a family,” Berks County nurse and mother of four Heather Spatz coos. “They help with every single aspect of chicken care — from feeding, water, cleaning coops and runs, to helping with medical care. My very intelligent 11-year-old researches different diseases and illnesses. My 9-year-olds help with food, water and tending to the baby chicks, while my daughter (and nurse-in-training) is extremely compassionate and great at handling them.”

Quick to note how raising chickens has brought the family closer, her children “are learning responsibility to care for dependent living creatures, reaping the rewards of caring for them by collecting a beautiful rainbow of eggs.” Still, it’s not for the faint of heart, Spatz advises. “It’s a tough job, especially in the freezing cold and summertime.”

CUCKOO FOR COOPS?

With more than 300 chicken breeds to choose from, you’ll determine your preferred bird count. You’ll research hatcheries, feed and supplemental nutrition while calculating the square footage necessary per bird — it’s more than you might think! Keeping abreast of best health practices and permit requirements, you’ll brainstorm methods for a year-round climatecomplimentary coop, vigilantly appointing predator protection.

FEELING FRIED?

Roosting resources are as copious and varied as bird breeds; starting from scratch may leave you feeling scrambled, particularly if you’re new to the nest!

Enter Lancaster County’s own Chet Beiler, OverEZ

Chicken Coop owner and CEO. Cheerfully cradling a ginger-kissed hen, Beiler took

to ABC’s ominous Shark Tank stage. Little did Beiler know he was about to lay a golden egg of his own when predicting his ingenious modular chicken coops were on the fast track to becoming “the category king for backyard chickens in America.”

Beiler’s poultry prediction proved far from paltry. “Even before the most recent surge in demand driven by a shortage of eggs, the appeal for the homesteading lifestyle has continued to grow,” President Kirson Wenger shares. Preassembled coops are bulky and overpriced. Low-cost imports are poor quality. “OverEZ brings the best of two worlds together,” says Wenger. “Incorporating a sturdy build using Amishquality material,” coops ship efficiently and can be assembled within 30 minutes. “Anyone in the lower 48 states can finally have access to a cost-effective and high-quality coop.” Have thoughts of ruling your own roost set your heart aflutter? Farm-to-table delights like these don’t get more “local” than your own backyard!

FUN FACTS

Before Hatching

Your Plan.

Chicken ownership laws can vary greatly from town to town. Zoning ordinances can include coop size, bird count and road/residence proximity. Good Stewardship. Brilliant for soil and plants, chicken poo is high in nitrogen. Backyard chickens excel in pest control and help the environment’s agricultural ecosystem.

Colton Brady

Colton Brady, 8, of Mohnton, won the 2nd Annual Sun-Maid Raisin National Contest earning him a seat on Sun-Maid’s Board of Imagination alongside five other students across the U.S., but that’s not all. It is his priority to share his success with others through Raisin Kindness.

Q: What was applying to the competition like? What did you have to do to win?

I had to write a story about a raisin, a mango and a prune because those are all Sun-Maid products. I wrote about a dragon and a catapult made out of Sun-Maid boxes that catapulted the raisins, mangoes and prunes at the dragon. They all became friends after.

Q:When you got through the essay, the two interviews and national voting, what was the grand prize?

Sun-Maid provided a bottomless raisin snack locker for [Brecknock Elementary School] so that anyone who doesn’t have a snack can grab one from the locker. I have so many other friends at Cumru and Mifflin Park. I wanted to share the snacks with them so they could also get snacks, too, because they all voted me for the second round… I also had to speak in front of my entire school in the gym with a Sun-Maid employee to talk about the contest. I was nervous.

Q:How did winning the Sun-Maid contest snowball into other opportunities?

“We started the Raisin Kindness project so that Colton’s friends and students at other Elementary Schools received free snacks as well and then our project spread throughout the whole Governor Mifflin School District,” says Heather Brady, Colton’s mom. “The word got out to local donors and other school districts, and they wanted to get involved… Now we have snack boxes with all of Sun-Maid’s flavored raisins, Goldfish and Milano cookies in about 30 different classrooms in 14 school districts.”

Q: What else did you work on during your position over the 2022-2023 school year? On Zoom, we talked with Chef Duff [Goldman] about making his Truce Cookie recipe,

half oatmeal raisin and half chocolate chip, to leave them out for Santa. We had to send a video to Sun-Maid when we were making them. Then they made a cool video with all of [the Board of Imagination members'] videos.

Q:What do you like to do when you are not spreading kindness and snacks through Raisin Kindness?

I like playing basketball with my team at school and outside with my neighbor, Tyson. I want to be in the NBA when I grow up…or be the CEO of Sun-Maid. I also like playing board games and going to amusement parks

Q:What is next for Raisin Kindness?

“We came up with the idea to make postcards filled with acts of kindness for the school districts to complete in order to receive the snack boxes in February,” says Heather. “Now that this project is established, our goal is to do this every February, but as more school districts want to get involved, it becomes harder to take on the task ourselves. It would be awesome to have more businesses sponsor a snack bin to help bring them into as many classrooms as we can to reach our goal.”

Q:Why do you think it's important to spread kindness to others? Well, if you are not kind, then what would the world be?

For what occasion would you recommend this cocktail? A Paloma is a great summertime drink to have while you enjoy life outdoors, barbequing, hanging by the pool or posting up for a late-night summer fire. It's also great on those hot summer days.

Family-owned Businesses Create Growth & Jobs

Family-owned businesses may be anything from a mom-and-pop shop to a small or midsized company. But often, the family-owned business descriptor does not actively reflect how powerful the role that these businesses have in the U.S. and local economies. Family-owned businesses contribute 57 percent of the U.S. GDP (that’s $8.3 trillion), employ 63 percent of the workforce (FEUSA, 2011) and are responsible for 78 percent of all new job creation (Astrachan & Shanker, 2003).

Growth & Job Creators

There is no shortage of family-owned businesses in Berks County that create growth and jobs. In fact, several have been winners of the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance’s (GRCA) Business Excellence Awards in previous years. The awards feature two categories separating businesses by annual revenue. Category 1 represents businesses with $1 million in annual revenue for the past three years, and Category 2 is reserved for businesses with $250,000 in annual revenue for the past three years. The winners are recognized for the growth and vitality they bring to the Greater Reading community.

For example, Wyatt Seating, a family-owned company that manufactures high-quality office seating that ships to customers across the country, bumped up to Category 1 last year due to its explosive growth. And the company shows no signs of slowing down. With a mission to ensure everyone can have a great chair, it hopes to continue growing and expanding for years to come.

Wyatt Seating, among other familyowned businesses in Greater Reading, is employing our people and creating new jobs within the community.

“While many of our competitors were scaling back last year, we saw the need and the opportunity to beef up our operation and add to the Wyatt Seating team. We believe 2023 will be the biggest year for our company yet,” says John Gallen, Wyatt Seating president and owner.

Family-Owned Business Support

For nearly a decade, the Berks Family Business Alliance (FBA) has been helping local family-owned businesses learn, cultivate and grow. Founded in 2014, FBA is a signature program of GRCA. In preparation for its 10th anniversary, FBA is evolving its brand to support its growth goals and expand its business expertise across the community. Its original mission to provide resources and support for family businesses has transitioned to include closely held businesses of all sizes. FBA provides diverse programming and numerous interactive opportunities to local businesses. FBA members can

benefit from Peer Groups, workshops, signature events and networking functions designed to help familyowned businesses (and closely held businesses) succeed.

Membership to FBA is open to all Berks County family-owned and closely held businesses and their employees. While there are no fees to join FBA, GRCA members receive discounted ticket prices, invitations to more events, and most importantly, access to the professionally facilitated Peer Groups. To learn more about FBA and to join visit, greaterreading.org/ berks-family-business-alliance/

KENTUCKY DERBY-INSPIRED FASHIONS

The Kentucky Derby is May 6. Even if you’re not planning a road trip, you can host a race-themed party. Dressing up — and wearing hats — has been a pivotal part of this landmark event since the first race in 1875. Check out these options and showcase your own Derby-inspired ensemble.

1. Sublime Sinamay. Channel iconic Derby style with this widebrimmed hat. Made of breezy sinamay, a cluster of feathery trim adds to the fun. The natural hue can be paired with a variety of colorful solid or patterned dresses for a stunning look. August Hat Company Sinamay Ladies Hat, ticketed $168, sale $84, Boscov’s

Celebrating Mom

Though we should celebrate and appreciate our mothers every day of the year, the hallmark day on which to do it falls on Mother’s Day, this year on May 14, 2023.

Did you know Mother’s Day is recognized across the globe? Here are a few ways moms are celebrated in different countries…

• India: Here mothers are acknowledged with a 10-day festival called Durga Puja. It’s thought to be both a religious ceremony and time for family reunions.

• Japan: After World War II, a version of Mother’s Day grew popular as a way to comfort mothers who lost a son in the war. In March, carnations are presented as the flowers symbolized the sweetness and endurance of motherhood in the Japanese culture. White is the traditional color.

• United Kingdom: Mothering Sunday occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In the 1700s, young house servants would return home to spend time with their mothers. Today, the holiday is grounded in religion and sees many churches hand out daffodils for children to gift to their mothers. Girls also traditionally bake a fruitcake for Mom.

• Ethiopia: At the end of the rainy season occurring in early fall, The Antrosht Festival is dedicated to mothers. After the weather clears, families come together at home for a large meal and celebration. Daughters typically bring vegetables and cheese, while sons bring meat to the meal. Putting them together, a hash is prepared and they sing and dance and tell stories of family heroes.

Looking to celebrate Mom with a something special here at home? Start on these pages!

For some it’s a soak in a Jacuzzi tub surrounded by candlelight, immersed in bubbles and with a glass of wine in hand. For others, it’s digging in the dirt and creating a beautiful garden retreat. Others love cheering on their favorite team in a basement man cave, enveloped in a booming sound system that makes them feel as if they are there with thousands of fellow fans. We asked Berks residents to tell us about their happy places at home. Here’s what they had to say…

"It is our tranquil place to relax, chat with neighbors & friends, entertain, & decorate..."
28 MAY 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

After living in our home for the last 26 years, we have been slowly remodeling different areas to make our lives more comfortable now that we are empty nesters. As much as we have always loved the house and neighborhood, we have always felt our stone farmhouse was missing something! We purchased a unique home that was physically moved in 1992 from roadside to a cul-de-sac. It was perfect for kids to play safely as they grew. Over the years, we made changes to the landscaping, opening the front so you could see more of the stone and beauty of a 200-year-old home. After much dreaming, planning and designing, 2020 was the year to start construction. In May, we were able to finally realize our dream. The new front porch is now 10’x 30’. It is our tranquil place to relax, chat with neighbors and friends, entertain and decorate for every holiday throughout the year. My husband and I look forward to returning after a day at work, especially spring, summer and fall, so that we can sit on the rockers or swing and reflect on how blessed we are to live in such a beautiful home with so many wonderful memories. It is truly our happy place!

Beth Gallen Mastromarino CFP® Managing Director, Financial Planning Advisors and Van Reed Wealth Management

My dining room is my happy place. It’s home to a table that once belonged to my great-grandmother that has boasted many colors over the years, but I’ve stripped and stained it back to its original glory. I’ve sat at this table and have shared so many meals with family members, sharing discussions, debates, jokes, family stories and more. The dining room, for me, is one of the most important rooms of a home. It’s where technology is banned and family comes together to discuss their day. It’s where we step away from social media and into the real world. The dining room, where we gather for meals, is the soul of the home. It’s a place that fuels conversations, strengthens bonds, cements relationships and weaves memories. The dining table is the heart of the home.

My husband Barry and I live in his grandparent's home, built in 1946. We started renovations on the home in 2012, which ended up being a three-year renovation project. We lived upstairs while renovating the downstairs and then moved downstairs when renovating the upstairs. Since Barry's grandmother lived in the home until she was 98, she spent most of her time in the kitchen. Her favorite spot was the window seat, which is now my happy place in our home. It's not about the view from the window, it's more the place in the kitchen and the view of my custom stove and hood, painted my favorite color, PURPLE!

My Happy Place at Home is this corner of windows in our living room. It's a cozy, sunny spot to relax with my family, and the windows give a great indoor- outdoor feel even in the winter. The corner faces south so we get morning sun from the left and afternoon sun from the right. My 3-year-old son likes to walk along the back of the sofa like it’s a balance beam, and the bow window sill behind it is the perfect place for him to sit and watch for the occasional deer in our yard or the birds at our feeder. And it just wouldn’t be the same without all the little handprints about three feet high. And as soon as my daughter can manage to climb over the back of the sofa to join her brother, I’m sure we’ll have another set of tiny handprints about one foot high!

No matter how hectic life can become, there are few things in life that feel more comforting than returning from a busy day to rest in your favorite place in your home. My favorite home space effectively marries functionality with style. A sitting alcove that features everything from wood, to stone, to a bespoke sliding wooden door, my family and I enjoy both the warmth and the different textures of the area. [The door] leads to outside, so we can enjoy both fresh air and watch TV, depending on what mood strikes us. My son, Max (pictured), and sweet pup agree wholeheartedly!

What can you do with a tiny 13’ x 13’ outdoor space that is just a concrete floor and a tiny garden? That was my dilemma when I moved into my home many years ago. What it became is a secret spot: a place of beauty where it is quiet and private. I had artist Jeanine Saylor paint a large tree on the garage wall and on the other side of the wall she painted a smiling sun. There is a rose bush that grows every year out of the concrete and frames the fence. We strung lights, casually placed umbrellas and a few pieces of furniture. We also added an outdoor fireplace for the chilly nights. The last addition every year would be plants, potted, hanging, herbs and vegetables. Place a few concrete statutes around and many outdoor candles and — my goodness — we have created our own tiny sanctuary where we sit, read and listen to the birds on a Sunday morning with coffee, or music with a glass of wine in the evening. It’s our respite and a lovely place to just breathe and relax. We are so grateful for that 13’ x 13’ concrete spot.

What I love most about my space is my foyer. It’s the first impression of my home, so I always try to keep it warm and inviting – both for guests and myself after a long day. I accomplish this with plenty of greenery, including my favorite houseplant, my Monstera. My foyer gets great morning light from a second-story window, so all of my plants really thrive in this location (as long as they can survive the cats’ paws). I accompany my houseplants with home décor from local shops, like this “Stay Awhile” sign from Timber Made Design Co. that I purchased at The Mint Leaf. And, of course, you can never go wrong with a little reminder to Have Some Fun Today!

I had always dreamed of a space exactly like the room that I now call my family room. It truly lives up to its name. I envisioned a space that offered natural light and natural elements throughout. I also dreamed about a fireplace that could be used on cold winter nights as my family and I cuddled up on our couch to watch movies or play games. This simple space allows all of those ideas to come to life. Grand windows, surrounded by natural wood and stone encasing a fireplace, a large couch big enough to create space and comfort for my three children and me to engage in Friday night movie night, it is the best feeling.

My favorite place at home is in the living room when my grandsons stop by and I get to read and play with them. Our house is small, but we always seem to have enough room for everyone when they come to visit to make it our home. KellY-Carfagno Owner, Muddy Creek Soap Company

In an effort to stimulate conversation with our three teenagers, my wife, Rachel, created this area off of the kitchen. There are four supremely comfortable swivel chairs. It invites people in, even teenagers who are unenthusiastic about conversing. Once my kids drop into these chairs, conversation ensues. It's pretty amazing, really. Of course, there are days where it's just McCoy (our family dog) and me and that works out pretty well, too!

VMy happy place is in my sunroom, complete with my morning coffee and my wife, Michelle. We watch the birds flit about feeding and chattering. The dogs play, sniff with curiosity, and protect us from nothing, but bark nonetheless just to let us know they are useful. I contemplate what I have to do after I water the plants and my wife says nothing but everything with her smile. No matter what happens, no matter how worried I am about something, no matter what real hardship we are about to face, her smile, the morning coffee, the dogs, the birds, the silence, and the morning sun rising, sets me at ease and gets me ready to face the day. That’s my happy place.

As most people know, when growing up in an Italian household, food is the staple that brings the family together. For that reason, for me, the kitchen has always and will always be the heart of the house. My passion for cooking has inspired me to open two restaurants, and even on my off days, I find myself in the kitchen cooking for my family. It brings out my creative side and gives me peace and calm.

This is the Tiki Bar that I built in my backyard during quarantine, when I, like a lot of people, was going stir crazy and looking for entertainment. I had been thinking about it since I bought the house in 2017, so this gave me the perfect excuse to build it. And I bought the materials right before the price of lumber skyrocketed! The bar sits aside of the pool and hot tub, and is extremely useful for the events we’ve have outside – birthday parties, graduation parties, etc. It also gave me a place to display all of the memorabilia and knickknacks that I accumulated over the years that don’t quite work in our family room. I can’t imagine our backyard without it.

My pool is my happy place at home. It brings me peace, patience and a Zen-like feeling. Unfortunately, it only lasts half the year.

How to Choose Your Agent

In any market, but especially in a competitive one, it’s important to find a realtor that is your best match. Where do you start? Here are some things to look for…

• Communication: You’ll want to feel comfortable with your agent and that you can speak with them openly. You’ll likely have a lot of questions and your realtor should be able to answer them, or find an answer for you rather quickly. You’ll also want to work with someone who communicates in a way that’s best for you. Are you a phone person? Prefer a text? Email? Sort that out with your chosen realtor so that your communications expectations are clear.

• Chemistry: You’ll be working with your realtor A LOT. For that reason, you’ll want them to be someone you enjoy spending time with.

• Experience: By working with an expert in the industry, you’ll likely benefit from their connections and knowledge of the local market. Ask realtors you’re interviewing how many times they’ve renewed their license; it can give you a good sense of how long they’ve been working.

• References: Ask trusted friends and family members who have purchased in the area in which you’re looking to buy or sell who they’ve worked with and if they recommend them.

• Fees: Know up front what your agent’s fees are so you aren’t surprised later. They should be perfectly willing to communicate this to you as well as share information on other fees to expect in working through the process.

A Baby Bash to Remember

Wanderlust. It might be the best word to describe the inspiration behind the theme for my daughter, Mia Russo’s, baby shower for her soon-to-be-son, Luca. Mia has always enjoyed airplane rides, cruising the Caribbean and trips to the beach. Welcoming a new

To bring the travel theme to life, I began where many creatives go for inspiration: Pinterest. Using keywords, I was able to narrow my search and begin to curate my vision. A recurring theme I saw for travel-inspired baby showers was the use of globes. Some used them in a modern way, some in a more rustic way and some went vintage. Ah vintage, now that’s more my style! I decided that globes would be the main focus, paired with vintage books, suitcases, model airplanes, as well as accents of wood & burlap.

– who is the party for? What do they love? Hone in on a theme and then use a couple of objects that complement it!

LIVING IN STYLE
48 MAY 2023 | berkscountyliving.com

Money is Always an I ssue

As with any event, it is important to set a budget for decorations, food and your venue rental. For the venue, we wanted a simple-yet-fun menu, an ideal location for attendees, and an accessible entrance for those with disabilities. After looking at 3-4 places, one checked all the boxes: the beautifully remodeled Building 24 Kitchen and Bar in Wyomissing. With its lightly stained wooden shiplap, steel beams and history in Berks County, it made perfect sense to utilize their facility. It would match our vintage travel theme, fit our budget and accommodate our needs.

Coleen Newell, Building 24’s event coordinator, was helpful and excited to be a part of the celebration.

I was able to come into the space and capture some images to get a feel for the ambiance and layout where we’d be hosting and entertaining our

50-person guest list. We settled on a brunch-style offering along with a dessert bar.

Decorations were sourced from my local Goodwill, Hobby Lobby, Ross, on Facebook Marketplace, Marshalls and Amazon. There were some items that were unavailable at stores and local shop owners were able to help with those. We found beautiful vintage suitcases at consignment store Nothing’s New in Shillington, and some were loaned by Brenda Huey of AAA Reading-Berks travel.

As a photographer and graphic designer, I could make all the signs for the shower; however, time is a precious commodity, as a time saver, I decided to utilize what Etsy had to offer. Voilà! Tons of on-theme templates that are easily editable and at an affordable

price point. These signs are an integral part of the event. They give instruction and add to the whimsy of the day! The entrance sign gives the room direction; the guest “Baggage Check-in” allows attendees the chance to sign the glass globe with well wishes for the baby, and as a thank you at the end of the event, the “Baggage Claim” is where guests picked up their travel take-home gift. Most handmade elements were curated from finds at the Dollar Tree. If you haven’t looked lately, they have a fantastic craft section. I was able to purchase burlap banners, craft paper, fabric squares, markers to write on glass and so much more! These handmade elements were a labor of love and no doubt added to the look!

A Little Help from Friends

Part of bringing the travel theme vision to life included creating sketches of the dessert bar and tablescapes. This provided a visual aid to determine what, if anything, was needed to complete the design. It also allowed me to share the vision with my vendors. When you are designing an event, it’s important that you delegate where you can. I take an “all hands on deck” approach. Even my son helped to make the paper airplanes

suspended in the balloon arch. I enjoyed partnering with local vendors including Unforgettable Events, Le Petit Macaron Shop, Boards & Bougie, Dutch Maid Bakery and Sweet Street Desserts made for the perfect dessert bar. Cupcakes, cake pops, chocolatecovered pretzel sticks and a cake with a “Welcome Baby Luca” custom-made topper from Etsy were, forgive the pun, the icing on the cake!

Origen Latin Fusion: UPBEAT ISLAND VIBE

Yearning for a tropical flair at dinnertime?

From Fried Sweet Plantains to Garlic Butter Shrimp served with tostones (twice-fried plantain slices), Origen Latin Fusion welcomes diners to feast in their festive and classy Sinking Spring restaurant. One wall is decorated with fun, fabulous pink roses in three shades and green accents (look for the bicycle, too!). Co-owned by sisters Jannette Marmolejos and Grace Diaz, the location on Penn Avenue (formerly the Tomcat Café) has proven to be an attractive, highly visible spot, and frequently Jannette plans dinners for large parties of up to 30, in addition to regular customers.

Numerous enticing culinary creations abound, mixing familiar tastes and ingredients designed to transport your palate on a flavor-filled Latin journey. Jannette and staff are incredibly gracious hosts, making sure everyone is satisfied with their choices — and they’re equally happy to suggest dishes to try.

Refreshing Drinks to Accompany Appetizers & Salads

Perky, all-natural beverages include a frothy, Creamsiclelike Morir Sonando, combining orange juice and milk, cane sugar and ice — a bright, cold drink popular in the Dominican Republic. Strawberry Drink and Passionfruit Juice are equally refreshing, as are the shakes: Virgin Pina Coladas and Strawberry Milkshakes. Along with Coca-Cola and other Bistec Chino

sodas are three flavors not often available elsewhere: Jarritos sodas in Mandarin, Fruit Punch and Tamarind.

For appetizers, a “most popular” choice is Chicharron de Pollo — crispy fried boneless chicken bites, dipped in mayonnaise swirled with cilantro. Sausages star in the hearty appetizer called Salchipapas which adorn crispy French fries, and are enveloped in cheddar cheese sauce, parmesan cheese and a mayoketchup sauce.

As an appetizer or side dish, an order of Fried Sweet Plantains targets a craving for carbs and starch, and this plate delivers enough to share with friends and family. Pineapple chunks in a Tropical House Salad create a colorful, healthy, fruity pizzazz to cucumbers, red onions, spring greens and Parmesan cheese.

Stewed Pork with white rice and beans

Salmon, Beef and Pork

Entrees are Specialties

Origen’s yummy Pan-Seared

Salmon is cooked in herbed butter with mashed potatoes on the side. The Blackened Salmon is a spicy treat, though, marvelously dark-coated and crispy all along the top with tender, coral-colored salmon flakes below. The large portion of fish is laid out gently on just-steamed garlic spinach leaves, filling the plate. Every bite is a texture adventure, with the spices exuding a sweet-salty heat. The difference in textures balance one another and the flavors linger long.

Carnita Frita — marinated, fried pork — plus tostones and Dominican fried pork belly, Chicharron de Cerdo.

However, if you love slowroasted pork, head for the sandwich menu and satisfy that preference with Origen’s beloved Cuban Sandwich, packed not only with pork, but ham, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, mustard and pickles. On the side, French fries join the platter.

Fond of Mofongo?

rice pudding known as Arroz con Leche, a warm, sensuously seasoned treat. Origen’s recipe is super memorable, far more flavorful than the standard.

Tres Leche is a white-frosted yellow cake created with three types of milks. The texture and sugary topping are especially wonderful with a hot espresso or coffee. Hot chocolate, cappuccino and lattes are also available.

Reservations are suggested for busy nights and weekends.

Because you’ll likely carry leftovers home, set aside some of the salmon and spinach to devour later; you will find them just as delicious eaten cold.

Beef-lovers will have a field day at Origen! Several types of steak prepared in a variety of styles are available to select, starting with a delectably juicy grilled ribeye called Bistec Chino. This dish is also portioned lavishly, extending across a low hill of absolutely delicious fried rice. Diced sweet peppers, onions, scallions and sweet peas meld together to create an aromatic, bitingly sweet and salty flavor in this unique fried rice. The taut tension of the rice itself provides a chewy, satisfying experience. The ribeye, topped with teriyaki glaze and a sprinkling of sesame seeds, practically falls onto the fork.

A different ribeye entrée seasoned with salt and pepper comes with rice and chimichurri sauce. Spanish-Style Steak and Onions comes with rice and beans, while Churrasco features skirt steak — grilled — embellished with chimichurri sauce and tostones.

Pork entrees include Glazed Pork Chops that deploy passionfruit for sweetness,

Enjoy no less than three kinds of Mofongo, green fried plantains — stuffed. Version number one is mashed with garlic and cilantro, and a choice of chicken, pork belly and shrimp. Steak Mofongo is stuffed with sauteed beefsteak and Origen sauce. Origen Mofongo offers plantains mashed with pork belly, cilantro and garlic, and a stuffing that combines extra pork belly, shrimp and longaniza sausage, all drizzled with creamy Victoria sauce.

Authentic Latin Desserts and Hot Drinks

Source: The Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Management Teams” list, published on January 12, 2023. Rankings based on data as of March 31, 2022. Data provided by SHOOK® Research, LLC. Forbes “Best-in-State Wealth Management Teams” ranking was developed by SHOOK Research and is based on in-person, virtual and telephone due diligence meetings and a ranking algorithm that includes: a measure of each team’s best practices, client retention, industry experience, review of compliance records, firm nominations; and quantitative criteria, including: assets under management and revenue generated for their firms. Investment performance is not a criterion because client objectives and risk tolerances vary, and advisors rarely have audited performance reports. Rankings are based on the opinions of Forbes and not representative nor indicative of any one client’s experience, future performance, or investment outcome and should not be construed as an endorsement of the advisor. Rankings and recognition from Forbes are no guarantee of future investment success and do not ensure that a current or prospective client will experience a higher level of performance results. SHOOK’s research and rankings provide opinions intended to help investors choose the right financial advisor and team, and are not indicative of future performance or representative of any one client’s experience. Past performance is not an indication of future results. Neither Forbes nor SHOOK Research receive compensation in exchange for placement on the ranking.
