COVINGTON TRACE

ER &Hospital

Hospital

The brand new Covington Trace ER & Hospital was the brainchild of Dr. Matthew Bernard and a small group of local physicians who had the idea of opening a new hospital for the Mandeville/Covington area three and a half years ago. While looking for the right location for the facility, Dr. Bernard soon connected with Nutex Health, a healthcare management and operations companybased in Houston. Discovering that Nutex had like-minded goals for a state-of-the-art healthcare facility, Dr. Bernard and Nutex put their efforts together. It was a successful union for all parties, and in February 2022, they broke ground on their location at Highway 59 and Interstate 12. The idea of Covington Trace ER & Hospital became a reality and will open its doors in May.

Focusing on providing the highest level of healthcare and exceptional experiences for their patients makes Covington Trace ER & Hospitaldifferent. Those seeking medical care can expect state-of-art medical technology and patient-centered, concierge-level medical care for adults and pediatric patients in a facility that is second to none. Covington Trace is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and offers inpatient and outpatient services and specific procedures. With ten examination rooms, the wait time to see an ER physician is minimal. Additionally, the facility boasts ten inpatient rooms, so if an overnight stay is necessary, patients can recover in-house without being transferred to another hospital.

partners in the hospital. At Covington Trace, there is a drive to return to the model when doctors made house calls, and there was no one between doctor and patient: figuratively or literally. This modified hospital model allows emergency department partners to work more directly with patients and their families.

Closer to home, The Sanctuary residents Dr. Brent Giuffre and Dr. Michael Christner have joined the medical staff at Covington Trace ER & Hospital. Both are board-certified in Emergency Medicine and are excited and eager to be a part of this new facility, whose mission is to ensure that all patients have the best experience and medical care possible while there.

If you need emergency medical attention and want a different experience in emergencymedicine: start to finish, the highly-skilled medical staff at Covington Trace ER & Hospital is ready to serve.

The well-appointed medical and support staff at Covington Trace ER & Hospital are dedicated to compassion, attentiveness, and exceptional service to each patient. All of the physicians are local as well as

KNAPS FAMILY

Say hello to your neighbors, the Knaps: Andrew, Jillian, Jacob, Landon, Emma, Amelia, Harper, and their Golden Retriever Arcturus. Making The Sanctuary their home just a year and a half ago, this busy crew loves being a part of the neighborhood they now call home.

Andrew and Jillian Knaps, President and Vice President of Knaps Painting, LLC, stay quite busy. Running a business takes a lot of time and energy, but not so much that they are not driven, active, and focused on providing their children with the best opportunities possible as they successfully balance work and family life with five children. Most can relate to Jillian when she says, “Our lives revolve around our children, and we are so happy to be able to raise them in this community.” The Knaps love the sense of community that The Sanctuary offers and enjoy the

many activities hosted in the neighborhood clubhouse.

The Knaps family chose their home not only because of the wonderful community but also were motivated by the space and open floor plan. With a family of seven, space and functionality are key. The home’s floor plan has both. The first floor is appointed with a bedroom, bathroom, living room, and office, which makes for a quiet work space to conduct business. The second floor is the main living area of the home with kitchen, dining, primary bedroom/ bathroom suite, plus another bedroom. The third floor has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, which is the perfect area for the kids’ quarters. Of their homeselection choice, says Jillian, “It was laid out perfect for our family. Everyone has their own room.” Although having a room of their own is important, the

10 | The Sanctuary Living May - June 2023

Knaps family prefers to hang out in the downstairs living area when it comes to being together. This room is large and functional and equipped with a big comfortable sofa that everyone can fit for family movie nights.

Jillian’s favorite space is the dining room. She loves the expansive windows that let in so much natural light and give a picturesque view of the woodlands of the neighborhood. Another reason her dining room is her favorite is a bit more sentimental. The focal point of the room is a family antique Carrara marble table. A beautiful and beloved piece, it makes the room all the more special. Adding to the dining space are mirrors that create an inviting feel for everyone who enters. Of this airy space, Jillian says, “It’s cozy enough for an intimate family dinner and easily accessible from the second floor entry as well as the

kitchen during parties where we typically stage food and desserts.” This room sounds like the perfect combination of classic beauty meets practicality.

The Knaps also really like their big, three car garage. Sure, it’s spacious enough for three cars, but its best feature is that it easily fits all the gear that five active kids would need, including five bikes and sundry outdoor toys. With a family of seven, this space is surely much-valued storage for any number of odds and ends.

When the Knaps moved into their Tupelo Trace home, they opted for some renovations to make it their own. Being able to do their own renovations was an added bonus in the updating process. The first step in their revitalization was to completely repaint the interior and exterior. New light fixtures also added an easy update, followed by all new hinges and hardware throughout. With a family of seven, efficiency is essential. With this in mind, the Knaps added all Samsung Wifi Smart Home appliances in their kitchen and laundry room. They also replaced and upgraded the three HVAC units and added an ultraviolet light cleaning system that keeps the coils and ducts free of allergens and mold. They have started on the cabinetry and continue to do more work on their home daily. As is often the case with a twenty year old home, upgrades and renovations are ongoing for the Knaps’s home.

Family movie night is a welcome respite from the hectic lives of this family of seven. Jillian and k

Andrew’s days are packed with running, Knaps Painting and trying to keep up with their five children, who have full schedules. With ranges in age from thirteen to seven, they are pretty active with a variety of interests and commitments.

The oldest Knaps children are the boys: Jacob and Landon. Jacob is 13 and in 7th grade at Mandeville Jr. High. Like most boys his age, he likes hanging out with his friends and also plays basketball. Landon, 12, is in 5th grade at Tchefuncte Middle School. He is a paintball and airsoft enthusiast. The youngest three Knaps are the girls. Emma is 10, in 4th grade at TMS, and she is a soccer player and a swimmer. Amelia is 8 and in the 3rd grade at Pontchartrain Elementary. She plays soccer and does gymnastics. Lastly, Harper is 7 years old an in the 2nd grade at PES. Like her big sisters, she plays soccer, but she is the artsy one who also loves to sing and dance.

When the Knaps want to get away for a change in altitude they like visiting Gatlinburg, TN. A trip to Destin is also a family favorite, and always a fun, closer-to-home getaway. Accordingly, the Knaps also like to visit Orlando, Florida. With children whose ages range from thirteen to seven, Orlando is obviously the perfect spot for a family vacation. With Disney and Universal theme Parks, there is plenty to do for every member of the Knaps family.

The Knaps have not only invested the last year and a half in making some changes to their home. During this somewhat short time, the family of seven, plus Arcturus the family dog, have become a part of a community where they are sure to stay for a very long time.

Pets

Duke joined the Clements: Lauren, Jonathan, Victoria, 13, Brayden, 11, and Charlotte, 10, about a year ago, and it’s been a lovefest ever since. The lovable Shih-Poo was an easy choice for this busy family because of his calm and sweet temperament.

When Duke joined the Clement crew, he had no idea of the adventures he would be a part of, but he jumped right into their hectic lives with his tail wagging. Ever the baseball fan since puppydom, Duke can often be found at the ballpark waiting and watching as big brother Brayden practices his game. When he isn’t watching Brayden on the field, he makes his rounds, giving hellos to everyone; he loves people and attention.

When the weekend rolls around, Duke is equally as busy as a regular spectator on the travel baseball circuit. If pets are permitted in the ballpark, and Brayden is playing, Duke will be there. His weekend can just as easily involve going to a cheer competition to watch sisters Charlotte and Victoria. Loyal and loving, Duke takes his family commitments seriously.

Sometimes, however, Duke needs a little break from the hectic schedule of the Clements. When he needs a relaxing weekend and wants to cuddle, he packs his favorite toys, a bit of kibble and treats, and heads to his Gigi’s house! Gigi, Lauren’s mom, is Duke’s favorite person outside his immediate family. Going to Gigi’s means kisses, cuddles, and all her attention. Lauren says about Duke’s visits to Gigi’s, “He thinks of it as his lake vacation home.” I love imagining Duke arriving for his own vacation with his Gigi.

Duke’s siblings adore him. They love taking him any and everywhere. Whether at a Mardi Gras parade, birthday party or just snuggling up watching a movie, Duke joins in the fun with the Clement kids and their friends.

With his propensity to get excited and do the ‘zoomies’ as fast as his little legs will carry him, his genuine love for family, and his capacity to simply jump right in with the kids, Duke Clement is the perfect dog for his energetic family.

One of the most common questions I get asked online and in person: “Is this an emergency for my pet?”

To answer that all-important question, look at the list below to determine if your pet needs medical attention immediately or if you can hold off and give them a little time.

If you see any of the below signs, you should take your dog or cat in immediately.

Rapid or shallow breathing

Labored breathing

Straining to urinate or defecate

Prolonged or difficult labor

Collapse or fainting

Too weak to rise

Excessive Bleeding

Body swelling

Any gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhea or vomiting

Fever over 102.5

Ingestion of a foreign body (sock, battery, etc.)

I teach my clients to think of their pets like toddlers. If you would take your child in for the clinical sign present, then you should take your dog or cat to the vet to be seen.

Home-buying comes with many questions and concerns; the home-selling process is no different. Regardless, if you have never sold a home or have sold half a dozen, you will have many questions that come with that process. Home selling isn’t a process practiced regularly by homeowners, and the rules, regulations, and industry are constantly changing. Most home sellers begin to have questions before starting the home selling process. If you’re selling your home, it’s suggested that you have a strong understanding of the process and are well prepared. In most cases, asking questions is the best way to understand the process and be wellprepared.

WHAT ARE THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM HOME SELLERS?

• When is the best time to sell my home?

This frequently asked question cannot be answered simply or in general. Every real estate market is different; therefore, the best time to sell a home will differ for each real estate community. In most cases, spring is the best time to sell a home, but even those months will vary depending on the area in which you live. Since every home seller’s situation is different, you should discuss the timing of your home sale with your realtor.

• How is the real estate market right now?

This frequently asked question from home sellers before listing their homes is related to the local real estate market. There are many market indicators that your agent should be able to share with you to help explain the condition of the local real estate market. One of the most important indicators of market conditions is the average days on the market. The average days on the market can indicate to a seller how quickly homes are selling when listed for sale.

• What should I disclose to potential buyers?

Always be honest. You must disclose to potential buyers anything you are aware of in your home. If you are aware of issues, whenever possible, fixing them before going on the market is best.

Final Thoughts...

As a home seller, there are many important questions concerning the process, and no question is dumb. Selling a home is not done often, so asking plenty of questions is the best way to be prepared and well-educated as you go through the process.

Total Health

The Men’s Total Health folks want you to know that a visit to their office is a very different experience than a visit to your regular doctor’s office. Co-founder Micheal Roach aptly explains, “ We do not treat you like a dollar sign. We will put together an individualized plan of medicine for each person that walks through the door. Your health is the most important thing to us, and a close second is your experience with us.” This healthcare concept, particularly the services MTH offers, is a novelty in today’s medical world.

The conception of Men’s Total Health came about while co-founder and New Orleans native Michael Roach was working in a men’s health and hormone therapy clinic as a nurse practitioner in Houston. After working in the clinic for ten years, he realized that the New Orleans area needed a clinic that offered the same services. Soon after, he partnered with Ross Cannizaro and brought his valuable expertise in the field to the Big Easy.

Men’s Total Health has been helping people with their medical needs for nearly three years, and the results have been life-changing for many. Offering services such as primary care, hormone therapy, weight management, erectile dysfunction, and help with hair loss, Men’s Total Health is the premier place of its kind.

As the name suggests, the clinic is mainly geared toward men, but they have women clients who also seek their services. Why is the focus primarily on men? The reason is simple. Men’s problems are often characterized as ‘unmanly,’ a falsehood that MTH wants to dispel. There is no shame in getting help to control and maintain your health. Fatigue, low libido, ED, and other associated issues are common. One in three men has low testosterone levels, a problem that can be treated with a proper hormonal replacement solution. Men’s Total Health professionals encourage anyone who feels a little ‘off’ to seek attention.

In most cases, having them feel like themselves once again is an easy fix.

Michael’s favorite part of his day in the clinic is sharing with patients the alternatives that can change their lives. As Mike explains, the reward is monumental: “Changing patients’ perspective by giving them the tools to take personal responsibility and accountability for their well-being. We want men to take charge of their health, not only for themselves but for their families.” The change in perspective of which Mike speaks is often the catalyst for positive change in an individual’s health and life.

The professionals at MTH know about managing and treating men’s hormonal levels because they are backed by thirteen years of experience in the field. Not only can you count on guidance from someone with experience and passion, but you can also count on the Men’s Total Health staff to be genuine, caring people who treat each patient with dignity, not as a number. These critical components set Men’s Total Health apart from other medical clinics.

Hence, for those who may be struggling with hormonal imbalance, weight management, erectile dysfunction, hair loss, or simply in need of primary care, Michael advises, “Don’t wait. We can help now and correct your issues today. The longer you wait, you’ll regret losing those days or months down the road.” That’s sound advice from a man who has made it his life’s work to help other men live their best lives.

MEN’S

Spring in Louisiana is truly a magical time of year! As the temperatures warm up and the flowers bloom, the entire state comes alive with color and energy. Unfortunately, spring, specifically June 1st, is also the start of hurricane season, and it does not end until November 30th. As hurricane season approaches, Louisiana homeowners and renters must prepare for potential damage and take steps to protect their property. Here are some tips to help you get ready and minimize the impact of a hurricane.

1. Make a plan: Before hurricane season starts, plan how you and your family will evacuate if necessary. Make sure everyone knows the plan and has a designated meeting place. As part of your plan, create a checklist to ensure you have all important documents in a waterproof portable file or container to take with you. Include Social Security cards, proof of residence, insurance policies, birth and marriage certificates, stocks, bonds, other negotiable certificates, wills, deeds, and copies of recent tax returns.

2. Secure your home: Take steps to secure your home and protect it from potential damage. Trim trees and branches, secure loose outdoor items, and install hurricane shutters or plywood over windows and doors. Also, consider reinforcing your roof and garage doors.

3. Review your insurance policy: Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage for your home and personal belongings. Review your policy and make any necessary updates or changes. If you rent, you should get renters insurance because while your landlord most likely has insurance on the rental property, that insurance will not cover your belongings.

4. Take a video inventory: Video evidence of property is extremely helpful if you have to file an insurance claim. Walk around your property, capturing the condition of your home before the storm. It is helpful to narrate the video calling attention to things that a claims adjuster may find useful. Make a video of each room in your house focusing on the highest-value items. If damage is sustained from a hurricane, here are some steps to take:

1. Assess the damage: Once it’s safe to return to your home, assess the damage and take photos of it for insurance purposes.

2. Contact your insurance company: Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the damage and start the claims process. If your insurance company is non-responsive or offers much less than the replacement value of your damage, call a lawyer specializing in insurance claims, like The Law Queens. Many of our clients are initially offered no compensation or inadequate compensation by their insurance companies. With our dedicated and compassionate representation, we can help these clients navigate the complex insurance claims process and secure the compensation they deserve.

3. Make temporary repairs: If necessary, cover holes in the roof or board up broken windows. Keep receipts for any repairs and materials used.

4. Seek professional help: Hire a professional to assess the damage and make necessary repairs. Be wary of contractors who offer services door-to-door and always check their credentials and references.

Hurricane season can be unpredictable, so plan, be prepared, and protect your home and belongings to minimize its impact.

Jason &Gabriela Thompson

Jason and Gabriela Thompson and their five children have enjoyed calling The Sanctuary home since 2020 when they purchased their twenty-year-old Andy McDonald classic French Country style home. Knowing they wanted to keep the French Country look while enjoying a fresh and updated exterior, they opted to enhance the classic French look by painting it white with a pale blue front door and matching window shutters. Also, adding to the exterior update, they included a new roof with copper finials and a copper chimney cap. The results are stunning. Today, their home looks like a classic French Country house that one might find in Provence, luscious landscape and all.

the walkway to the pool area, tree-form crêpe myrtles are stately positioned.

Upon entering their backyard space, it is clear that the Thompsons like the white clean classic French theme. Keeping with this theme, the decking is white limestone laid in a Versailles pattern. The pool, contracted by Gary Maestri of Maestri Pools, has a French gray plaster that gives the pool a deep Mediterranean blue sparkle that is certainly inviting on a one-hundred-degree Louisiana summer day. There is even a nod to Greece in the mixed blue glass subway patterned tiles glistening alongside the pool.

The pool gardens continue with the double-layer boxwoods, and large Sylvester Palms line the rear of the pool and pool wall. These hearty palms are a worry-free addition because they can survive the occasional Louisiana freeze. Russian Olive trees are perfectly aligned along the backyard fence for a bit of privacy.

It is only natural that the Thompsons would have a lovely home, gorgeous gardens, and impeccable landscaping. Jason is the owner and operator of Grass Inc. In business for twenty years, Grass Inc. has thrived servicing the entire Northshore area, offering a myriad of services, including scheduled lawn maintenance and exquisite landscaping: both new installation and scheduled landscape maintenance, irrigation, lighting, drainage systems, and horticultural maintenance year-round. Jason and his crew can do it all.

Jason’s expertise is evident when observing the Thompsons’ own outdoor haven. Gabriela says about their front yard gardens, “You can tell we love neatly manicured boxwoods. We love them so much [that] we incorporated a double layer around our gardens for extra dimension and uniform look.” Equally as beautiful are the rose bushes. You don’t have to search to find a plethora of Knock-Out roses in red and pink hues. Knock-out roses thrive in Louisiana, abundantly clear from the Thompson family’s rose garden. Also, peeking out in all their glory, it is hard to miss the vibrant colors of the Drift roses in peach, pink, red, and even white for a bit of contrast.

Additionally, they have included white dianthus and camellias to enhance their classic French white house. And it is hard to miss the white gardenias and pink camellias that existed before the Thompsons worked their own gardening magic. Italian cypress and cone-shaped holly give the gardens needed height. Jason’s clients, who happen to be The Sanctuary neighbors, receive the utmost attention to detail in every aspect of their lawn, beginning with lawn maintenance scheduled weekly. The environment and delineation of each property are considered when Jason starts to look at horticulture plans for a client’s lawn. He designs each yard specifically for the appointed home and its particular design. “Being able to significantly improve the appearance of a client’s home or business,” says Jason is his favorite aspect of the day-to-day. A significant improvement was the case for their home on Cardinal Lane, which merited a refresh for the house’s exterior.

Because of his vision and creativity, Jason came up with unique and beautiful designs for his garden but explains that a beautiful and well-maintained garden is attainable for anyone. The best advice he gives when maintaining a

beautiful lawn is consistency. Jason advises getting your yard cut regularly, keeping it watered, increasing the watering in dry months, and remembering fertilizer. It has been a busy year for Jason and Grass Inc. Partnering with the Junior League of Greater Covington, Jason took on the position of landscape artist for the Designer Showcase Home. Also, recently, Jason was tasked with designing and implementing the landscape project for Jesuit High School’s Traditions Courtyard.

Based on their stunning outdoor space and Jason’s chosen profession, the Thompsons clearly have a deep appreciation for nature and the beauty of gardening. Their classic French-style home and gardens exude refined elegance and timeless beauty while prioritizing functionality and balance.

CEDARWOOD

School

In August, Cedarwood School will celebrate 40 years of educating children in the Mandeville/Covington area. In the 40 years since its establishment, school president Kathy LeBlanc and the faculty and staff of Cedarwood have fostered a love of learning for the thousands of children who have passed through their doors.

With a reputation as one of the finest private schools in the Southeast, Cedarwood traces its roots to a dream that Kathy and Maxie LeBlanc imagined when they moved from New Orleans to Mandeville with their two young daughters. Having been an education consultant in four parishes, Kathy had an idea of the kind of school she wanted for her daughters. “I saw some schools that created positive and effective learning environments and some that were in desperate need of stronger leadership and more critical attention to the students. Those experiences were influential in providing a basis for creating the mission of Cedarwood School,” explains Kathy. Ideally, the LeBlancs wanted a great school coupled with a small community lifestyle. “We saw a need for a quality early childhood program in our community.” Not finding the combination they desired, the LeBlancs decided to build one. In 1983, the LeBlancs built their dream school for young children that is nestled in a neighborhood on Heavens Drive in Mandeville.

The area’s first private school to be accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs and Cognia began with forty-eight preschool students; today, the school has an enrollment of 310 preschool, elementary, and middle school students. The thriving seven-acre campus boasts a 10,000 square-foot gymnasium, Jr. Olympic - size swimming pool, baseball and soccer fields, and a generous well-equipped play area graced by an abundance of trees and green space for exploring and playing. For Cedarwood, the outdoor space and play area are essential for students as they develop their motor skills, social interaction, creativity, and imagination. Outside play is key in educating the whole child, a foundational element for the small elementary school.

Cedarwood is a different elementary environment than others similar to it for a number of reasons. The most significant of those reasons is the small size. Learning and growing in a small school environment allows students to stand out as individuals. Students, faculty, and staff know each other in a small setting like Cedarwood. Such a setting promotes cognitive and emotional growth for each student and gives them a sense of safety. The smaller school setting also allows teachers to focus on the actual process of pupil learning. With smaller class sizes, teachers can determine what is best for the individual student regarding learning styles and educational needs. Another aspect that makes Cedarwood so different is the meaningful sense of community. Starting the day as a community is vital to President Kathy LeBlanc, “We start our day with a whole school assembly to build community and offer a positive

start to the day for our students.” Undoubtedly, this community-building start to their day is equally vital to the Cedarwood students.

Kathy LeBlanc believes, “Teachers are the most important people in our children’s lives. They are powerful and influential in forming a platform for the love of learning.” When it comes to the teachers at Cedarwood School, they are tops. Each is certified, well-qualified, experienced, and caring. Kathy proudly describes those remarkable educators: “They are creative, collaborative, and courageous people who dedicate their energy to inspire our students every day.” The love and dedication that Cedarwood teachers share with students are apparent, as evidenced by the number of students who return to visit them.

Look no further than Cedarwood School for a diverse and unique learning environment, a progressive curriculum, and dynamic, caring teachers. Integrate these critical elements with a beautiful, inviting campus and a small, close-knit community. The result is what Cedarwood strives to create for each of its students, which is “A Foundation for Life.”

Neighbor

Certain adjectives stand out when coming up with a befitting description of neighbor Jackson Cantrell, including curious, driven, passionate, and intelligent. From a young age, Jackson always asked questions and sought knowledge, which led to a natural curiosity about the world. This curiosity has fueled Jackson’s success and led him to some pretty unique places.

Now a sophomore at The College of William & Mary, Jackson actually took an exciting detour to arrive at the prestigious Virginia institution. His journey began when he was named a 2021 National Merit Scholar at Mandeville High School, and Florida State Univerity offered him a full scholarship to receive his undergraduate degree. Ever the researcher, Jackson soon discovered that the full ride from FSU would translate to funding his studies at the university’s flagship study center in Florence, Italy. It was an opportunity he had to take.

In August of 2021, as a freshman, Jackson began his college career with eleven months of studying Italian, European history, and service immersion in the Tuscan community. About his program, Jackson explains, “Taking several European history courses that encompassed the Renaissance period through World War II, the site visits and day trips the professors provided were incredible.” Using the convenience of Europe’s rail system, Jackson and his classmates found themselves exploring the historic sites of Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Further, taking full advantage of his time abroad, he even traveled alone to experience Paris, Zurich, Barcelona, and Palermo. His adventures continued as he visited elaborate mosques and 6th-century cisterns of Istanbul and ancient Egyptian wonders in Cairo and Luxor. Grateful for the opportunity, Jackson reflects on this life-changing freshman year, “ Walking the grounds of those who came before us has an impact that can’t come from books, lectures, or movies. I was incredibly lucky to win my academic scholarship to study in Italy. It’s what made these travels possible.” A college first year, he will, without a doubt, treasure forever.

Ever the explorer, Jackson considered continuing his studies at Florida State’s London campus. Knowing that some of the coursework he needed for his degree would not be available, he knew it was time to return home and head to Virginia.

Thus, Jackson began his sophomore year in Williamsburg at The College of William & Mary. Founded in 1693, William & Mary is the country’s second oldest institution of higher education. The historical aspect of the school would play a significant role in Jackson’s choosing it because his love of history is a significant part of who he is. “In searching for the right fit in terms of higher education, I wanted a place that was filled with history, was well regarded for academics, and whose community shared the same values as me,” Jackson explains his college choice.

When asked about his favorite part of William & Mary, with enthusiasm, he says,“My favorite part about W&M as an institution is the nature of its professors. They each have their own unique ways of teaching and in forming relationships with their students. They are always accessible, experts in their fields, and incredibly humble and down to earth.” Jackson appreciates his instructors’ sincerity and likes that he can form close relationships with them. A significant advantage of being in the smaller liberal arts environment is that it adds to the learning experience.

William & Mary is the perfect fit for this young man with an insatiable curiosity and drive to learn and improve the world. With a double major in history and government, asking him to name his favorite course

proved challenging. “The curriculum for history and government at William & Mary is amazing, so it’s hard to pin down just one,” he explains. However, he finds an international politics course particularly interesting as he considers the different perspectives and approaches to global security. This is a topic that he wants to fully understand regarding the inner workings of international policy.

Coursework and studying notwithstanding, Jackson is busy. Like any college student, he enjoys hanging out with his friends. He also likes to hike, read, cook, and kayak. He is currently involved in creating a Wargaming society at William & Mary. He is also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a leadership organization, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and has recently joined the sailing club. Jackson is also a member of the Lemon Project Society. This studentvolunteer organization supports the Lemon Project, A Journey of Reconciliation, established to make right the perpetrations against enslaved African Americans by The College of William & Mary.

Jackson Cantrell always seeks new challenges and pushes himself to be the best he can be. His curiosity and determination have been key factors in his success, and there is no doubt that he will continue to achieve great things. As for his future, Jackson plans to eventually pursue a career in either national security or foreign service. “I believe that in studying, interacting with, and experiencing different cultures, we can better understand the similarities and differences between nations and come to a fundamental understanding together.” Those are wise and authentic words from a young man who wants to improve the world.

Teens

In this issue of The Sanctuary Living, we are delighted to focus on resident and St. Scholastica Academy senior Aidan Carpenter in our “Just for Teens” feature. Aidan is excited about her future for a number of reasons. First, this multitalented young lady will be attending Iona University on an athletic and performing arts scholarship in the fall.

Given her power on the soccer field, it was no surprise that Aidan would receive a collegiate athletic scholarship. Starting her soccer journey at age four, Aidan has continued to succeed through hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. As such, she has made a name for herself in soccer, winning several club state titles while playing competitively with Louisiana Fire and FC Tammany. During her high school freshman year, Aidan tried out for the U.S. Developmental Academy in Texas and made one of their top teams. This meant more travel and sacrifice as she began honing her soccer skills to be the best. Closer to home, with SSA soccer, Aidan led the Doves as the leading scorer for the last three years and was chosen as a two-time All-State selection. Her hard work continued as she joined the ECNL, one of the country’s most elite leagues. While playing for the ECNL, the Iona University coach witnessed her strength on the field and began recruiting Aidan to join their Division I soccer program in New York. In early February, reaping the benefits of her labor and sacrifice, and with the support of her parents, Aidan committed to play for the University of Iona’s Women’s Soccer team.

Although soccer is a big part of Aidan’s life and earned her an athletic scholarship, her musical talent earned her a performing arts scholarship at Iona University. With no formal voice training other than choir many years ago, she explains that her love of singing came about “just singing to myself in my room.” However, that girl who was just singing to herself in her room worked to perfect her calling for singing and songwriting, and on her 18th birthday, she released her first single, “Every Minute.” The musings of Aidan inspired this soulful piece as she considers what lies ahead when she leaves her family and friends for a new and different life in New York. The lyrics of “Every Minute” perspicuously echo someone who wants to savor every moment of who and what is familiar and loved before life changes forever.

Attending college in New York on a performing arts scholarship is an opportunity for Aidan to continue pursuing her singing career. She plans to take full advantage of her new home in terms of her music, her soccer, and her education. The daughter of doctors, her current plan is to study biology and eventually attend medical school, but she is open to whatever comes.

Aidan’s mom has continued to remind her, “Trust the process.” This valuable advice resonated with her, especially when she was uncertain about where she would attend college. By trusting the process, Aidan has found her place and looks forward to embracing every part of it.

Meanwhile, this summer, the soccer-playing singer-songwriter is working on an album and training for the upcoming season as an Iona University Gaels. She will no doubt be holding tight to every minute spent with family and friends as she prepares for the next exciting chapter in her life.
