THE RAYWYN STORY

T

he Raywyn story is interesting.

In 1953 Mrs Sylvia Askew of Sale won Reserve Champion Cow at Melbourne Royal with Lewisham Noble Beautiful VHC, she also won many Gippsland Champions and was sired by OK Franchise Noble (imp. NZ). In 1955 they won Reserve Champion Cow at Melbourne Royal with Glenavon Duchess 10th VHC. In 1958 this cow won Supreme Champion Dairy Cow All Breeds at Sydney Royal, she also won 44 Country Champions and produced 16310 – 5.8 – 939 lbs bf. She was sired by Glenavon Stylish Prince, a very successful sire also owned by Raywyn, he was a son of Austral Park Midwatch a most successful Sire at the Clarks of Gippsland. So the blending of these bloodlines created the dynasty of Raywyn which was to dominate the Championship list at Royal Shows throughout Australia for the next few decades. Raywyn Beautiful Prince (Stylish Prince x LN Beautiful) was bred to Duchess 10 many times and it worked ! Raywyn Her Grace was one. She won 5 1st prizes at Melbourne Royal in 1963, but died young. Her Grace was bred to Raywyn Ambition, Champion at Sydney 1965 & 2 x Reserve in Melbourne - a son of Glenavon Stylish Prince and made Raywyn Ambassador, Junior Champion Melbourne Royal 1962 & Res Snr Champion Sydney 63 – became very important sire at Katandra (see story) also siring Katandra Ambassador 5 x Champion Bull Sydney Royal also Champion at Melbourne and Adelaide for Raywyn and as mentioned in the Katandra story, the 10 x Melbourne Champion Katandra Royal Wonder. Raywyn Grand Ambassador was another of Her Grace sons, his show record was amazing. Champion at Melbourne Royal 67, 68 , 69,72 & 73, Reserve in 70 & 71. Champion at Adelaide Royals 66,67,69,70 & 71, Reserve in 68. Champion at Sydney Royal 66 & 72 along with many at the

major Fairs in Gippsland, Shepparton & Camperdown over the years. Grand Ambassador sired many winners including the great cow Raywyn Grand Girl EX, Champion Cow at Adelaide Royal from 1969 to 1971 making the unique result of being Champion Cow on the same day as her own Sire was Champion for 3 years in succession! This cow won many 1st prizes also at Melbourne over many years. Her full brother Raywyn Grand Pal also won many including Junior Champion at Adelaide Royal in 67 and Junior Champion Melbourne Royal 67 and Reserve Junior in 1968 and Reserve Senior Champion at Melbourne in 72, 73 & 74. Reserve Champion at Adelaide Royal 69,70 &71 and Reserve Champion at Sydney Royal in 72, each time being beaten by his Sire (except in 74 at Melbourne when the Ambassador Son Royal Wonder did) Raywyn Grand Combination (by RGA) was Reserve Junior Champion at Adelaide Royal and Melbourne Royal in 69 and Junior Champion at Sydney Royal in 70 and then was sold to Kreeside and was Champion at Adelaide in 72 and Reserve in 73 and sired the Junior Champion in 75. These genetics kept on doing it. Raywyn Grand Manuel a son of RGA was 1st 3 yo & Champion at Melbourne Royal 71, he was also Reserve Junior Champion at Adelaide Royal 70 His son Raywyn Prince Manuel won Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal 74. Reserve Senior Champion in 76 , his full brother Raywyn Prince Manuel 2 was Reserve Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal 77 The mating of Grand Manuel to Grand Girl bred Raywyn Royal Manuel Junior Champion and Senior Champion Bull Adelaide Royal in 73, Reserve Champion 74 and Champion in 75 for Kreeside and Raywyn Quality Manuel Reserve Junior Champion Melbourne Royal 75 and Reserve Senior Champion The Australian Jersey Journal – May-June 2020 // 24

in 78 and again in 1981. A later son of Grand Girl, born when she was 18 ! Raywyn Great Kingdom x Katandra Star Kingdom was Reserve Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal in 85. The exchange of Katandra and Raywyn animals worked along for several years. Apart from the success of Katandra Ambassador the Askews did very well with many others including Katandra Silvermine 144 VHC. 1st 2yo dry & Reserve Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal 75. 1st 3 yo in milk 76 & 1st 5 yo in milk 78. Her daughter Raywyn Fashionable Sunbeam was 1st 4 yo in milk & Reserve Champion Cow at Melbourne Royal 1984.Then her dtr R Trendy Sunbeam won her class at Melbourne twice, indeed 144’s 3rd dam was the 2 x Supreme Champion at Melbourne Silvermine 5 EX who was also the g dam of K Ambassador! Katandra Melys 93 (her 2nd dam was x Raywyn Ambassador) was Reserve Junior Champion Female at Melbourne Royal 76 & 1st 4 yo dry in 78. Her sons Raywyn Royal Challenge won Junior Champion at Melbourne 78 and Raywyn Fashionable Marina (x K Royal Incomparable) was Reserve Junior Champion in 79. Katandra Paxie 63 (x K Royal Wonder x R Ambassador) was the dam of Raywyn Fashionable Paul x K R Incomparable was Reserve Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal in 1980. Katandra Golden Lily 24 was a top cow, she won the 4 yo dry at Melbourne Royal in 76 and a month later was Champion Cow at Warragul Fair. Katandra Melys 66 (her dam x Raywyn Ambassador) was purchased carrying Raywyn Melys 66 Incomparable, he proved very successful with several major Gippsland Champion dtrs and Melbourne class winners, a son Raywyn Brendon Lee won Reserve Junior Champion at Melbourne Royal in 83 and sired Raywyn Brendons
