This year we’ll be asked to vote in a referendum on whether First Nations people should be acknowledged in our Constitution and have a Voice to Parliament. For some community members, the upcoming referendum on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament is a significant step forward, and for others a contentious issue.
Many community members have a lot of questions about what this actually means, but there are ways to find out information in a straightforward way. Knowing where the trusted sources of information are is one way, and the other is attending one of the many yarning sessions being held around the city over the coming months.
The Community Place Stafford would love to invite everyone to come to our Repair Café on the 20th May from 10am – 12pm at The Community Place Stafford and have a yarn about the upcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum and the Uluru Statement of the Heart.
There will be a pop up information stall hosted in collaboration with the Noonga Reconciliation Group.
This is an opportunity for everyone in the community to share thoughts, questions and concerns about the referendum, in a safe and inclusive environment.
For more information email The Community Place at enquiries@thecommunityplace.com.au.
Meet Jack Connolly, he’s turning 97 this week, and although an Accountant by trade, he’s a Lion by choice, and is celebrating 61 years as one - an outstanding milestone - congratulations Jack!
Born in Gayndah, and educated at Nudgee College, Jack’s Lions story began when his career as an accountant and bank manager saw him move around Southeast Queensland. He’s been a member of five different Lions Clubs over the years. Initially joining Eagle Farm Club, his work took him to Clubs at Nambour, Southport, Grange and finally to the Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya, where he’s still a member today.
Jack has taken on multiple roles over his 61 years of service including District Governor, Cabinet Secretary (twice), President, Vice-President and various Director roles (multiple times!). These positions took him from Brisbane to Roma to San Francisco and back.
Jack shared his view on one important aspect of being a Lion. ‘In my opinion, Lions is built on friendship,’ he said.
‘It sort of grows on you.’
‘Getting involved and meeting people is the most enjoyable part of being a Lion.’
Jack reflected on one of the biggest changes since he joined, the ‘inclusion of women’, which he said was needed.
‘Different talents were required, not just businessmen.’
‘We began doing far more social work and fellowship, and giving more to those in need,’ he shared.
When asked about the future of Lions, Jack said he firmly believes there’s still a place in the world for service clubs and
their survival hinges on our ability to recruit new members to lighten the load.
‘Many hands make light work,’ Jack said.
‘Give it a go, come and see what we’re all about.’ For more information about the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/LionsBrisbane or look up their website https://brisbanebunya.qld.lions.org. au

A lovely lady by the name of Lorraine Duckwitz chapped on the door of Echo News HQ a few months back with a Certificate of Appreciation for some advertising we had carried out for the annual Cent Auction to raise funds for the Queensland Medical Research Institute.
We were really humbled, but from this gesture we thought, this lady should be the one receiving an award for all the hard work in the community that she does. So, we were delighted to hear that this local legend was recently awarded the ‘Senior Volunteers Award’ by the Order of Australia Association, Queensland Branch in recognition to her community service. This presentation was one of three awarded to Senior Volunteers.
This inspiring lady’s unstinting passion to raise funds for various community causes can be traced back to her support for her children attending Geebung State School. I am sure many readers can relate to the truly mammoth efforts required for building and manning of school tuck shops and annual school fetes in order to raise funds for swimming pools and classroom equipment, etc.

The Hills Echo, April 2023 - Page 17
Lorraine tells us these were rewarding days of achievement but also very hard work! Lorraine, like you, followed her children as they moved onto high school and outside sporting activities. Her attention was then diverted to other causes as time passed and she became involved in supporting medical research in the field of asthma and eventually cancer.
The Queensland Medical Research Institute has benefitted immensely from her efforts as she led regular “Pop-up Stalls” in shopping centres and “Cent Auctions” which she conducted several times a year. The support she has received from all levels of the community from centre and club management, businesses helping with the supply of excess goods and YOU, the elderly citizens who find they cannot actively participate, but lend support by donations of cherished craftwork, has been outstanding.
Lorraine‘s Senior Volunteers‘ Award, although awarded to her, recognises the Volunteering Spirit of many who have served our country in this way. Through her enthusiasm and dedication, she has provided a means for so many of us to contribute in our own small way. The reward for us all is the continued successes QMRI makes in Medical Miracles.
The Ridley Road Community Men‘s Shed has supported Lorraine in her fund raising efforts and congratulates her on this prestigious award. Support for Lorraine‘s Fund Raising can be made by an email to lorraineduckwitz@gmail.com Well done, Lorraine!

An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club
The 31st March saw the Newmarket Bocce Club’s first corporate work competition with surveyors
Jenson Bowers Geoimage.
A great night was had by all, with five club members, assisted by Tony D, Mario, Bill, Silvio and Natale, the chef cooking up a storm. Jenson Bowers kindly provided the BBQ, goodies and drinks and there wasn’t an empty belly in the house!
Six double teams played for the perpetual cup and are in their 13th year now, the first nine years being played in a park and following four years at the club. They play with the clubs composite balls, a bit lighter than the traditional steel bocce balls. The final was nail biting affair ending in a 6-6 draw coming down to golden point, one ball each player. For the audience it made for a great game
If you would like information regarding the Newmarket Bocce Club, contact Mario on 0403 257 325 or Tony D on 0418 731 423

A guide to educational facilities within north Brisbane
Each year, Our Lady of Dolours School commemorates ANZAC Day with a special service at the school and this year was no different, with students paying homage to the sacrifices made by the men and women in our Defence forces.
Principal, Mrs Tricia Howard, explained that the school has a long and mutually supportive relationship with the Australian Defence Forces (ADF).
“Our Lady of Dolours has many Defence families within the school community, and we are very proud of the close ties we maintain with the ADF,” she said.
“We are very fortunate to have a Defence School Mentor (DSM) on staff at O.L.D. to provide specialised support to the children and families of ADF members, particularly when they are arriving at or leaving the school on a posting, or when a parent is absent from home”, said Mrs Howard.
“Our DSM, Mrs Kerri Wilson, does a wonderful job of supporting our Defence students and she always ensures that our commemoration of important dates in the Defence calendar is meaningful to everyone in the school community.”
The ANZAC Day service was held in Our Lady of Dolours’ Memorial Garden and attended by staff, students, and families. A number of special guests also took part in the service, including Councillor Andrew Wines, Gaythorne RSL Director Mr Ryan Shaw, and Defence personnel from Enoggera Barracks. The School Choir performed, and O.L.D. student, Penelope, delivered a beautiful rendition of the New Zealand National Anthem.
“The annual ANZAC tribute at O.L.D. is an important part
of our school year”, said DSM, Kerri Wilson.
“Our students always attend the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Gaythorne RSL and are proud to march with our servicemen and women in the parade, but it is really special to have our own memorial service at the school, presented by our Defence students.”
“For many of our students, the ANZAC history is the history of their own families”, said Mrs Wilson. “It is the perfect way to acknowledge our mums and dads on active service, as well as recognising the sacrifices their families make. Lest We Forget.”
Play means different things to different people. Some play can be aimless, fun and amusing. It can also be a focussed, highly engaging learning process. Children, adults and even animals need to play to make sense of the world, practice skills and face new challenges. Play is human nature and it is survival!
"Play is essential to childhood and all children, everywhere, have a right to have play in their life- at home, in learning environments and in the community- so that they can thrive and learn, now and in the future," statement by Early Childhood Australia Draft Statement on Play 2022.
At MPC, play is valued as a significant means for learning and allows opportunities for children and teachers together, to plan the curriculum (what happens in the day). Play can provide insights into children’s interests, skills, beliefs, joys, what makes them laugh, anxieties and frustrations, how they learn, their intentions, how they represent their ideas, what they think, their skills, knowledge, and dispositions. Allowing time for play enables children to develop their ideas, understandings, and relationships, to persist, to take a risk, to make mistakes and try again.
Play is critical for children’s development, combined with good nutrition and quality sleep, PLAY builds healthy brains. Neurological pathways, synapses and neurons are made strong when children engage in play and repetition of play.
We are lucky at MPC that our days operate with lots of opportunities to play.
Teachers and educators use their knowledge and understandings about early childhood frameworks, current research, theories of learning as well as their observations and interactions with children to support each child’s growth, learning and development. We advocate for and promote the importance of allowing time and opportunity for children to be, play and feel a rich sense of belonging to their world. Play enables children a myriad of opportunities to learn, grow and become avid, ambitious and resilient learners.
If you are a parent and would like to learn more about how we play at MPC. Come along to our annual parent Play Night on Wednesday 24th May 2023 email admin@ mpc.net.au to RSVP.

Scouting has always been cool - but Enoggera Scout Group is now EVEN COOLER – with the recent installation of air conditioning in their hall. With the mercury rising quite substantially recently, the air conditioning has been a fabulous addition for the kids, allowing them to focus on fun and learning.
This much-welcomed addition to the hall would not have been possible without grant funding from the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Other local businesses and organisations that helped out with the project included Ben Gall and team from the Australian Heritage Specialists, who undertook the heritage assessment on a probono basis, the Brisbane City Council and Warren from Aircon Services, who did a fabulous job with the installation.
The Enoggera Scouts appreciate the support of these organisations, and thank the private businesses for their generosity. The group urge the community to support them

Sprinkling sweetness around the region.
Mother of two and wife to husband Rob who also runs a community group ‘Run With Rob’, Warner local Richelle Hopkinson founded Sprinkles N Cookies almost two years ago amidst the COVID epidemic.
After almost 20 years working as a Radiation Therapist, Richelle felt the pressures of working as essential worker during COVID, causing her to re-evaluate what made her happy.
"Working in the cancer treatment area is rewarding, however very emotionally draining and very medical. I have always had a passion for creating, so, I ended up turning my weekend hobby of baking and creating for my loved ones into a side business, which still continues to bring me joy and balance with family and home life," said Richelle.
After founding Sprinkles N Cookies, the business quickly gathered momentum leading to lots of community connections, sales, and smiles.
Richelle is now renowned for her delightful vanilla cookies that don’t only look heavenly, but taste like it, too with regulars even allowing her to be part of their annual family celebrations. Furthermore, Richelle has been recognised by the Australian Cake Artists and Decorators Association for her incredible creations and has been nominated for the 'best new cookie artist' in this years awards.
But Sprinkles N Cookies isn't just any baking business as they bake and decorate not only fondant, but also royal icing cookies. There are only a few cookies artists in the Moreton Bay Council region licensed to sell royal icing cookies due to the stringent licensing procedure -and Sprinkles N Cookies is one of them! Stay tuned for classes, to learn how to decorate and make your very own cookies!

As a young, aspiring writer who dreams for the moon, Georgia Wright has certainly already begun to rattle the stars. A published author, journalist, digital editor, copy writer, and proof-reader at age 19, this girl doesn’t muck around.
Perhaps it was her childhood love of books that lit the fire in her belly to produce stories of her own. Perhaps it was the fact that 7-year-old Georgia was promised by all her teachers that her talent for writing would make her famous someday. Admittedly, it was both. Either way, by the time she had reached Year 11 at Wavell State High School, all the students knew her name, and everyone knew she had put a book on the library’s shelves.
‘Love Hurts’, Georgia’s debut novel—a witty and romantic coming-of-age tale—was co-published by the author herself and InHouse Publishing in 2020, right in the thick of COVID-19. It became quite the local hit within the community!
For work experience in Year 10, Georgia chose to jump aboard The Echo News ship for the week. The team liked her enough to keep her around, and ever since, her role at the Echo has only grown. From producing journalistic work for the company, to then also proofreading the publications, to securing the position as Digital Editor for The Little Echo, Georgia’s contribution is never-ending. Currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Creative Writing and a Minor in Journalism at Queensland University of Technology, Georgia is working hard in all departments to set up her future. Just this month, she secured an internship at the 4ZZZ radio station, where she now produces news stories to present on the radio each Thursday (tune in if you dare!). This way, she can gain a wider range of real-world journalism experience before graduating next year.
What’s more, Georgia offers freelance journalism services to businesses and individuals. She hopes to turn these services into her own business one day, with novel writing to be her side hustle. Until then, she will continue climbing up in the world from publication to publication. Star to star.

Hi, I’m Danni the General Manager of the Aspley Hornets Football Club, located in the heart of Carseldine and the biggest Aussie Rules Club on the Northside of Brisbane. This non-profit organisation consists of three bars, an expansive and welcoming gaming room, a large dog friendly deck, three function rooms, 6 Points Café, and finally a 160 seated Bistro area. Every dollar spent in the club goes back to the community or our Aussie Rules players that range from three years old to the over 55’s. I hold a Business Degree with a Major in Marketing and started my career at a small club. I instantly fell in love with the role and hospitality. Just over eight years ago, I found my way to the Hornets and have never looked back. I have worked in various roles including gaming, marketing, operations, and for the last four years, General Manager. Our team at the Hornets is strong and diverse, with a notable presence of female leaders, allowing us to run the club with compassion, empathy, and a supportive environment for our team and members, akin to a family.
As a mother of two, I cherish my Hornet’s family and my passion lies in growing the team and providing a venue that is associated with words like family, friendly, safe, and welcoming for our members. One of my proudest achievements is our team. Their loyalty and dedication is truly remarkable, and it's heartening to see our club being considered as a second home by members, reflected in the kind feedback we receive.
I am also incredibly proud of our club's achievements, including winning the Best Gaming Award and being a runner-up in the Best Club Medium and Best Footy Club categories. We are committed to continuous growth, both on and off the field, as we strive to be a significant supporter of Aussie rules in the region and provide a hub that fosters a sense of community within our club.

7-year-old Zillmere local Tehya is a young lady with drive—drive to create, drive to overcome, and drive to share her passions with the world.
‘I’m a nice lady’, Tey assures Echo News when asked to describe herself. She is also a ‘true greenie at heart’ and the developer of her very own all-natural beauty brand. Having struggled with her diagnosis of Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD, Tey has faced many challenges throughout her youth in engaging with extracurricular activities. Her mother, Amina, explained that, “In the early childhood education system, she was being left out of both individual and group activities despite being able to express interest.” Amina recalls a vast array of instances where Tey has attempted to engage in a new skill set at school but has been advised by teachers that they cannot manage her daughter. Unfortunately, not every classroom has the capacity to “manage” diverse children. While this has led to her exclusion, it also taught Tey to redirect her sensory seeking and diverse qualities into her own passions and interests—hence, the creation of Tey’s Cosmetics.
It was about a year ago, when Tey began school, that the girl decided to bring her brand into fruition. She’d taken interested in other kids’ make-up palettes and nail polish and realised that make-up for kids was too expensive and made of unnatural ingredients. Being a creative greenie, it was Tey’s first thought to create an alternative herself. She now takes pride and joy in making cheap, natural, skin-friendly bath and lip products for all ages. So far, the business remains “low-key”, while Tey’s family works out the kinks of marketing, media, and businessmanagement. It is predominantly just for Tey’s enjoyment, and a means by which she can learn about basic science, maths, art, and geography. More information and products can be found on Tey’s newly established website: www.teyscosmetics.com
Of course, to this day, Tey is still learning to embrace her neurodiversity. However, with the unconditional love of her parents, as well as her own determination to give things a go, Tey is an inspiration to all. Amina shares that, ‘The love I have for Tehya is totally unchanged with her diagnosis. Tehya is the same person she was prior to the diagnosis as to who she is today. I just love her for everything she is and for her witty personality.’
Echo News looks forwards to the new heights Tey’s Cosmetics will reach, and congratulates Tey for her outstanding achievements.
In an Australian-first, the Palaszczuk Government will expand the Containers for Change program to include glass wine and spirit bottles from November 1, 2023. Since the start of the program, our community has made well over one million dollars from containers deposited.
Since the pandemic, as anyone who has been building a home or renovation knows, the building industry has faced difficulties with building supply costs, supply chain issues, labour shortages, and weather and flooding events.
Broad Construction, the company building the TOD, have announced they are facing significant delays in delivering the project. Although you may have seen the crane come down recently, there is still a great deal of work remaining to do inside the building.
The multi-level carpark, which is the part of the project I am most anxious to see completed is currently past its original delivery date and the Queensland Government is working with all concerned to resolve the issues Broad is facing to deliver the project as soon as possible.
As you may read on my Facebook Page, the present Ferny Grove Markets have closed. Colin, the convenor, has decided to not take up the new contract offer from Queensland Rail (QR) and has moved his business to the Kedron Wavell Services Club in Chermside.
I am disappointed with this decision as once I forced QR to the negotiating table all parties involved in the negotiation worked in good faith to deliver the outcome Colin had requested.
As private businessman however, Colin is well within his rights to make a business decision which is best for him. I wish him all the best for the future.
The future for the markets at Ferny Grove remains open.
The offer QR made to Colin still stands for anyone who would like to run the markets at Ferny Grove. If you or anyone you know may be interested, please contact my office and my staff will connect you with the QR Leasing Team.
With more Queenslanders renting, and renting for longer, it is important that our rental laws reflect the modern rental market. The Queensland Government has released the Rental Law Options Paper (qld.gov.au/rentinginqld) and is inviting you to have your say.
Feedback is being sought on proposed changes including safety, security, and accessibility modifications; minor personalisation changes; rules governing privacy and access; and a review of the bond, fees and charges relating to transparency and accountability.

Neighbour Day and Easter Egg Hunt 2023
Finally! After three years of disruptions, we managed to celebrate and host our Annual Neighbour Day Event with the eagerly anticipated Easter Egg Hunt again sponsored by Hicks Real Estate. More than 2000 locals came down to Teralba Park on Sunday April 2nd to join in the fun and games with some of our wonderful community organisations.
We had over 25 stalls from local Community Groups and were entertained by the Brisbane Brass Band and the National Servicemen‘s Memorial Pipe Band.
Kids scrambled for Easter Eggs and participated in some good old-fashioned games of tug-o-war, sack races, egg & spoon races and 3 legged races.
I’d like to thank all our participants for their great efforts to make it such a fun morning, not forgetting our Emergency Services teams who do such a great job and let the kids clamber through their vehicles!
Congratulations to Youth Member for Everton, Vidar Pittendreigh on his great work so far as the youth advocate for the Everton electorate. I look forward to working closely with Vidar throughout the year to improve representation of young people in Everton and state-wide.
It was my pleasure to welcome the senior school leader’s from Everton Park State High School and Albany Creek State High School to Parliament House recently. I enjoyed hearing lots of bright ideas about how we can improve our state and I‘m confident our future is in good hands!
An update from Cr Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward
The Shand Street landslip is among the largest and most technically difficult landslips from the 2022 floods, and Council want to make sure the solution is correct, complete, and safe.
The footpath on Shand Street is currently closed as land from the nearby embankment has slipped onto the pathway. A detour is in place through Grinstead Park on the opposite side of Shand Street to help people walk or ride around the closed footpath. Please follow the signage on site. Council is regularly monitoring the site to ensure no further slippage is occurring. Last month you may have seen Council conducting works on site, this included:
• Digging two test pits, refilled by end of day
• Some minimal clearing to get down to site
• Testing is to close the investigation and inform design solutions (to fix landslip and reopen footpath)
• Unlike other survey site work, there is no impact to road users
• The detour for pedestrians remains in place, no impact to this
• Accessing the landslip from the top (Matthews St, Stafford) Council will notify the community of restoration works before they start, and we appreciate the community’s patience and your continued use of the detour while the footpath remains closed.
If you have any further enquiries, please contact Council's City Projects Office on 1800 884 681 (during business hours), 07 3403 8888 (after hours), or email cityprojects@brisbane. qld.gov.au
tossing things out. Local residents can bring their broken items to fix them on the spot with the help of volunteer repairers.
There is no charge for repairs but a donation to cover operating costs is encouraged. However, you must be able to carry the item in and carry it out again whether we are able to fix it or not.
