COMMENT

CONNECTING THE TOWN

Y

ou’ll be excited to hear that for the first time, Horsham residents and businesses can get broadband connection speeds of up to one Gigabit (1000Mbps), which is among the fastest connection speeds available in the UK today. On page 12 there are details of Hey!Broadband launching its full fibre broadband services in the second week of February, 2020. Up until now, Horsham residents could only get broadband service over hybrid fibre-and-copper based broadband, which meant slower speeds and dropped connections - especially during peak times. Full fibre, on the other hand, connects fibre from the exchange directly into homes and offices - and this makes a massive difference in terms of speed and reliability.

Once you have your fast broadband you then need to think about how to keep your children safe online. On page 14 you can find out about the Safer Internet Day started on 11th February. West Sussex County Council’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Staying Safe Online team are delivering the ‘digital online safety sessions’ for parents and carers in schools across the county throughout February and March - the nearest session is on 12th March at Silver Jubilee School. Faster broadband at twenty-two times faster than the average broadband speed in the U.K. should help make Horsham a more attractive place for both businesses and residents which is good news for everyone. HORSHAM DISTRICT COUNCIL

IMPROVED RECYCLING IN HORSHAM

S

tatistics recently released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) identify Horsham District Council as one of the top 20 performing councils in the UK for improved kerbside recycling rates. The Horsham District has achieved a recycling rate of 53.5% exceeding the 50% target which was set for 2020. This achievement maintains us our position as the best performing district for recycling across the whole of West Sussex. Horsham District Council is now listed as one of the top 20 authorities for the most improved recycling rate in the country, going up 3.7 percentage points in the 2018/19 year. In addition to this, residents have also reduced the amount of household waste produced per household by 53kg which is now the lowest in West Sussex. Commenting on this success, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Recycling and Waste Cllr Philip Circus said: “My thanks go out to our residents who have risen to the challenge to increase their recycling having adapted to the changes to collections introduced by the Council in 2018.” While there is cause for celebration, there is always progress that can be made. The amount of waste produced per head is still high with food waste making up a staggering 41% of what we throw away. Whilst the Council is committed to exploring a strategy to collect food waste, more can be done to Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

reduce this in the home. For more information on how to reduce waste please visit https://www.horsham.gov.uk/waste-recycling-andbins/household-bin-collections/generalwaste/reduce-your-household-waste Could you be one of our 2020 recycling champions? The Council is looking for families who are keen to cut their food waste and improve their recycling rate. You’d work with us over the coming year to take on new challenges and share updates on how you’re getting on. Initially we’ll do a waste audit offering support and advice to help you and then in December we will take a look to see what a difference has been made. At the end of the year you’ll receive a £100 shopping voucher as a thank you for taking part. If you are interested please email recyclingchampions@horsham.gov.uk to apply.

HEY!BROADBAND

GIGABIT BROADBAND HAS ARRIVED

F

or the first time, Horsham residents and businesses can get broadband connection speeds of up to one Gigabit (1000Mbps), which is among the fastest connection speeds available in the UK today. Hey!Broadband will launch its full fibre broadband services in the second week of February, 2020. The first deployment includes 5,000 premises in select areas near central Horsham, and other areas will be considered in the future. Up until now, Horsham residents could only get broadband service over hybrid fibre-and-copperbased broadband, which meant slower speeds and dropped connections - especially during peak times. Full fibre, on the other hand, connects fibre from the exchange directly into homes and offices - and this makes a massive difference in terms of speed and reliability. Hey!Broadband offers Gigabit internet speeds for both downloading and uploading - a whopping twenty-two times faster than the average broadband speed in the U.K. Now many Horsham residents can go beyond the limits of copper wire and upgrade their broadband to a full fibre connection, which is better suited to the needs of today’s households. It allows residents to connect several of the latest devices simultaneously- such as 4K TV and lowlatency HD games- and get full speed and no interruptions in service, even at peak times. Hey!Broadband also offers full fibre solutions for

businesses. In addition to Gigabit speed, they can have bespoke solutions including leased lines and enhanced SLAs (Service Level Agreements) to suit each business’s needs. Horsham Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke said: “We welcome the news that some residents of Horsham will soon have an opportunity to benefit from gigabitcapable broadband. This is an exciting time and I am pleased we are getting on the front foot by discussing with suppliers how best to develop attractive commercial models to deliver better broadband coverage.” This long-awaited full fibre has been deployed by F&W Networks, a fibre infrastructure company. Its sister company, Hey!Broadband, sells broadband services on its network. Together, the companies plan to expand into other regions across the UK to bring full-fibre broadband to communities, as only 11% of homes in a few areas in the UK today have access to full fibre. Anyone who is interested in having the full fibre network deployed in their neighbourhood are encouraged to register their interest online on www.heybroadband.co.uk, or to call Hey!Broadband on 0808 168 1616 or alternatively email them at info@heyb.co.uk; doing so is free with no commitment to join. Those who register will be contacted as soon as there is any change to their coverage status.

GREAT EVENTS FOR 2020 Council announces new event experiences for Horsham in 2020

O

nce again, Horsham residents and visitors can look forward to a vibrant town centre programme of over 150 free events, markets, concerts and activities throughout 2020 co-ordinated by Horsham District Council and its many and varied commercial and community partners. The legacy of 2019’s Horsham District Year of Culture tees up an even more diverse set of events that seek to attract visitors from every sector of the community, engaging with increasing numbers of groups and local businesses. The primary purpose of the Council’s support is the economic bonus gained from increased footfall and publicity for the town, whilst enabling many business partners to use the town to achieve their own objectives, generating mutual benefits along the way. A central feature of this year’s events programme will see an increasing focus on sustainability in terms of both content and awareness of the core issues, with the Council working closely with local partners in the field including Kinder Living, Sussex Green Living and others. Individual event highlights this year include

Horsham’s starring role in the national programme of Good Friday Passion Plays entitled ‘One Good Friday 2020’ led by Horsham Churches Together and a re-energised town wide music festival on Easter Monday called ‘Horsham Sounds’ led by a consortium of community partners. For the first May bank holiday of the year, there will be a full weekend of entertainment. As part of a national celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe Horsham will be hosting ‘Horsham’s VE75 Weekend’, including The Broadwood Day of Dance and Horsham’s Bus Rally. Friday’s VE Bank Holiday on 8 May gives a one off opportunity for the whole community to come together to remember the bittersweet joy of peace felt on 8 May 1945. Already working with QM Studios and Age UK, Horsham District Council are inviting more community groups to step forward to play a part in a special day which will include ‘Winston Churchill’, an ‘East’ Street Party and a 16 piece ‘Glen Miller’ style band finale. Following their successful introduction in 2019 as part of the Year of Culture, the Spanish festival ‘Feria de Horsham’ returns as does an

extension of the Caribbean Day to include Latin America called ‘Carnivale Horsham’ in 2020. The ever popular French Fest will also return. Later in the year, September’s food and drink weekend returns with Saturday’s ‘The New Big Nibble’, with an increased emphasis on it being a local food show as well as a market place. Sunday’s Little Nibble is being rebranded as ‘The Future Food Show’ with all sorts of healthy and alternative food options on display. Horsham AmeriCARna is set to take over the town centre and Hop Oast Park & Ride with more ‘cruise throughs’ by a greater variety of vehicles. Plans for Christmas 2020 are to be confirmed and will be subject to evaluations of 2019’s activities and 2020’s available resources. These highlights are in addition to an amazing variety of other events, markets, bandstand concerts, town trails, exhibitions and street entertainment that all go on throughout the year. Commenting on the events programme for 2020, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am delighted that we are set to welcome such a broad scope of events and activities to Horsham for 2020. It is good to see so many popular ones making a return, but I am also really pleased that we will be hosting so many new events which are making their debuts this year. “More than ever, I believe we have something Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

that will appeal to everybody in our new programme. Not only do the events create an extremely engaging experience for residents and visitors of all ages, but they are also key to supporting local businesses and traders who benefit so greatly from being able to showcase their product and services to larger audiences of people. “Our thanks go out in advance to the many partners we will be working with to help make this impressive programme happen. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to come along and enjoy what is set to be an amazing year for events and entertainments.” One event that is not making a return is Horsham Piazza Italia. This event first ran in 2006 over two days with 12 Ferraris each day. Over time the event grew to a peak at Piazza Italia X in 2016 with displays of some 101 Ferraris, bandstand and balcony Romeo & Juliet performances, Gladiators, Granny Tourismo antics, Italian Job Mini cavalcades and many top quality operatic arias along the way. Unfortunately, many of the voluntary and commercial partners that made up so much of the content of this event are not now available. This has led to the event organisers taking the decision to terminate the event while it retains such a great reputation, allowing available resources to focus on a wider town programme with the many new events. WINERY FOR MANNINGS HEATH GOLF CLUB New Winery Planned for Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, Sussex

M

annings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, near Horsham in West Sussex, has proposed plans to build a winery, tasting room and restaurant on the 500-acre site. The new building will be needed for the production and storage of wine produced from 150 tons of grapes grown annually at the estate’s vineyard. Entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE, CEO of the Benguela Collection wine and hospitality group, acquired the golf club in 2016 and in the following year planted a 37-acre vineyard. Total production is projected at 75,000 bottles of sparkling wine annually: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The first crop is due in 2020, with the release of wine in 2023. Penny Streeter says: “We have created a unique wine destination at Mannings, with wine-themed events and food pairings throughout the year, and the recently opened Vineyard Kitchen restaurant. There are golf buggy tours of the vineyard, barbeques on the terraces, and 18 and a 9-hole golf courses.” “The new building we are planning is essential to house the equipment required for the pressing of

grapes and fermentation, bottling and storage of wine. It would also include a 120 seat restaurant and wine tasting room to create a special visitor experience, combining art, cuisine and wine, with beautiful views over the golf course. The new buildings would be in a ‘Cape Dutch’ style of architecture similar to the design of wine farms in South Africa’s Western Cape. The group has an award-winning vineyard on the Hermanus Wine Route in the Walker Bay region. The Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is a major tourist attraction in the region, with its oceanside location and nature reserve, as well as a restaurant, art gallery and Pirate Adventure Golf. The winery at Mannings Heath is also needed for processing grapes produced on another estate three miles away at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, which the Benguela Collection acquired in 2017. It is home to a small, experimental Pinotage vineyard that the group’s winemaker, Johann Fourie, is using to evaluate growing conditions in Sussex for a grape that is usually seen as South Africa’s signature variety. STEP OUT UNDER THE STARS IN MIDNIGHT WALK

M

ake 2020 the year you do something amazing! Go the extra mile and join St Catherine’s Hospice for its popular Midnight Walk on Saturday 6 June 2020. Last year around 1,000 people walked through Horsham to help St Catherine’s get a step closer to supporting more local terminally ill people and their families, at a time it’s needed most. This year, St Catherine’s needs you to step out under the stars, with your family, friends or colleagues, to make a difference to others in your community. The walk starts at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre, and if you can, why not go the extra mile and sign up to walk 20 miles for 2020? Or sign up for the 13 mile, 7 mile, or 2 mile family friendly route. Alongside supporting their local hospice, many people walk in memory of someone they love. Perhaps you have someone special you can walk in honour of? Maureen, whose daughter-in-law, Nicola, was cared for by St Catherine's, has taken part in several Midnight Walks in Nicola’s memory. She said: “I always have so much fun on the walk and whenever I cross the finish line I feel proud. Everyone cheers and congratulates you and it’s always a very poignant moment for me. I’d

28

MARCH/APRIL 2020

encourage others to take part in the Midnight Walk because raising money for our wonderful, local hospice is very important.” Rose Wood, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said: “Every year it’s humbling to see so many people join us at our Midnight Walk. It’s an inspiring night where people remember their loved ones, and challenge themselves to walk as many miles as possible, to raise as much money as possible. Every person has their own reason for walking but they’re united in wanting to make sure that hospice care is there for other people when it’s needed most. At the moment, St Catherine’s can only reach one in three people who need hospice care. By supporting our Midnight Walk, you’ll be making sure that in the future our hospice can help more people. Nobody should face death and loss alone, so we hope you’ll step out in 2020 for this very special evening.” Ready to step out? Sign up now at: www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk or call St Catherine's Events Team on 01293 447355. Make sure you sign up by 5pm on Monday 20 April to receive an exclusive early bird entry rate of £15. Your entry fee include a free T-shirt, finisher's breakfast and medal.

need a propagator or a greenhouse, or even a windowsill; all they need is a sunny spot and some well-drained soil. Just sprinkle the seeds in the ground and you can look forward to a fiesta of summer colour for very little work. The choice of plants and hue is wide. If blue is your thing try a soft shade of love-in-a-mist, or a vivid blue cornflower, or the most gorgeous tiny phacelia. For pinks try a fluffy clarkia or delicate godetia. Nasturtiums span the colour wheel from cream through yellow and orange to deep red. Annual doesn’t mean small either. Both larkspurs and amaranthus are tall and elegant, and cleomes which also provide height probably only need to be planted once as they are prolific self-seeders! Look around your garden for gaps in beds and borders which are in a sunny spot and well-drained. Don’t plant when it’s cold or the soil is wet and sticky. Wait until the weather is mild and soil is damp and crumbly, then fork it lightly to break it up. Use a rake to create shallow furrows, sprinkle the seeds over and rake them gently in, raking across the furrows to cover them. Bigger seeds like nasturtiums can be pushed into the soil a couple of centimetres deep and

HORSHAM DISTRICT LOCAL PLAN 2019-2036

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE PLAN

H

orsham District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan which will guide future developments in the Horsham District until 2036. The public are encouraged to have their say on the draft Local Plan during the public consultation from 17 February to 30 March. The Government requires all local planning authorities to build a significant number of new homes in the coming years. The will present considerable challenges for the Council. The Horsham District Local Plan will set out how the District will deliver these developments in a sustainable way and support the delivery of community infrastructures, transport links and opportunities for local jobs. The full Draft Local Plan is on the Council’s website from 17 February 2020 at www.horsham.gov.uk/localplanreview. Copies of the Draft Local Plan can also be viewed at the Council’s offices, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham, RH12 1RL and in all District libraries during normal opening hours. A summary exhibition about the Draft Local Plan will also be available to view in Horsham Library between 6 and 30 March. The Council is running a series of drop-in sessions across the District to enable residents to see a summary of the proposed options and raise any questions with the Council’s Planning team. The Government has instructed all local authorities to build a significantly higher number of new homes in the coming years. “I do not underestimate the difficulty of this task, but if we are to have a new Local Plan ready for adoption in 2021 we need to work to a timetable and this consultation is part of that process. “I urge everyone to read the consultation document and to give us your views.”

f you are feeling more drab than fab, why not take steps to feel your best in 2020! Have you heard the saying ‘confidence is the best outfit, rock it and own it? You really can wear ANY clothing and accessory if you have CONFIDENCE, and a little know-how! If we don’t feel confident, it’s hard to pretend, leading us to make ‘safe’ choices! Start the new year with a wardrobe declutter. Hold the clothes you wear near your face, under your chin and check in good light whether they make your skin look radiant or tired and dull. Donate the latter! Then turn all your coat hangers one way, and as you wear each item, turn them the other way. After 6 months, reassess the ones left hanging the original way. When clothes shopping, take a list and allow

enough time to try items on, otherwise it’s easily a waste of time and money. Keep ‘shopping’ your wardrobe, adding different accessories, or maybe shop a friend’s wardrobe with a ‘swishing’ party. As a personal stylist accredited by Colour Me Beautiful, I can help to discover your authentic style personality and how to express this through your clothes, establish which colours complement your unique colouring to make you look your radiant best, offering make-up tips. STUDIO 2

IT’S A LOVE AFFAIR

O

n the 14th May 2003 at 7.45 pm my life changed forever when I went on a blind date! Feeling more than a little bruised and battered (we were both recently single after long marriages) the two of us took a chance when a mutual friend told both of us “I know someone who would be perfect for you.” The resulting romance that blossomed caused me to suggest that we should buy the mutual friend a gift as a thank you - my love interest (as I called him at the time) suggested that only a small country would be enough to express our gratitude. We were lucky that our friend took a leap of faith and introduced us. Sometimes making any kind of recommendation can be a risky proposition as it can rebound if things don’t work out, but, boy, if it works out… Here at Studio2, we’ve been offering an “introduce a friend” reward for years and it’s one of our most popular promotions. A personal recommendation works out well for both the giver and receiver as the giver feels they are doing something good for a friend and the receiver gets a great salon experience - it’s a win/win. Sometimes it takes a little nudge from a kind person for you to find true love, whether it be a life partner, friend or (dare I say it) a new hairdresser… 17 years on and we are very happily married. We remind ourselves almost daily how lucky we are. For more details and latest offers visit www.studio2horsham.co.uk

HEALTH & WELLBEING

THE JOY OF EATING MORE FOOD

P

erhaps not something you’d expect a nutritional therapist say, but I’ve put it out there. Whether you want a slimmer waist, more energy or a calmer gut, the current fad is to focus on eliminating foods from our diets. This can be helpful, but as with anything else, you need to know what you are doing. And if you cut food out, what do you replace it with? Nowadays it’s hard to know for sure what a healthy diet is. We’ve been told eggs were bad for our cholesterol, but now we’re told they have little impact. Margarine was meant to be healthy, but we know this isn’t necessarily the case, and butter is back in favour. If you suspect certain food types are problematic, start with writing a food diary for a couple of weeks. Then, if you think you’ve identified the culprit, eliminate it for 2 to 4 weeks. If you identified more than 2 foods, don’t cut out both at the same time as you’ll not know which one is responsible for your symptoms. If after 2-4 weeks of eliminating a food your symptoms improve, you can leave it out of your diet. But it’s important to replace the nutrients this food provided with something else. With a dairy-free diet, it’s important to include non-dairy foods rich in calcium, such as: • collard greens • kale • okra • sesame seeds • tahini • sardines with bones (or other small fish) • almonds • chia seeds • figs

40

MARCH/APRIL 2020

• oranges Calcium fortified plant-based yogurts or milk are other good sources of calcium, as is calcium-set tofu. Gluten-free diets have become very popular, but they’re often misunderstood and considered a healthy approach. Gluten, which is a type of protein found in wheat, can be problematic for people who suffer from Coeliac disease, Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, for those who overeat wheat products or suffer from IBS. For those, a gluten-free approach can be helpful, but it’s important not to focus on a Western-style gluten-free diet full of processed foods. Start to look for gluten-free wholefoods rather than processed foods. This is easier to do if you cook from scratch. Veganism has become very popular as people try to eat healthier or save the planet. But, as with any elimination diet, turning vegan needs to be done properly. As a vegan diet cuts out all animal food sources, it removes important food types such as dairy and meat, which are important sources of protein, calcium, iron and various vitamins. Therefore, to meet your body’s requirements for those important nutrients, it’s prudent to plan a vegan diet well and add in plant foods that contain the elements you’re cutting out. For any dietary approach to be healthy, you have to remember to add foods in place of those you remove. If you have any doubts, speaking with a registered nutritionist can help. www.annapinnock.co.uk

SET4SUCCESS AWARDS

YOUNG SPORTS STARS RECOGNISED

O

utstanding young sportsmen and women were recognised at the annual Set4Success awards, held at Christ’s Hospital School on Friday, 31 January. Twenty-four applicants representing sports ranging from football, netball and hockey to baseball, synchronised swimming and motocross received a Set4Success award, which includes a financial contribution towards coaching and expenses, as well as free use of fitness facilities, courtesy of Places Leisure. Set4Success is a charitable organisation created by the Rotary Club of Horsham in 2010, run in partnership with representatives of Horsham District Council, schools, businesses and sports and leisure providers. To be eligible for an S4S award, candidates must be 11 to 18 years old, live or attend school in the Horsham district and be competing at a high level. To date, the charity has supported more than 200 young people, with previous winners including hockey player Lucy Wood, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, and golfer Marco Penge, now playing on the PGA EuroPro Tour. This year’s recipients are: Fynn Talley (football), Gavin Cherubini and Ace White (Muay Thai), Andrew Harrison (badminton), Esme King (motocross), Jodie Cherubini (Brazilian jiu jitsu), Madeline Giller (netball), Isabella Hayes (triathlon), Cecily Turner (water polo), Charlie Denton (karate), Emily Oliver (pentathlon), Alex Richer (cross country/athletics), Mame Sow (athletics), Leo Walker (shot put/discus), Anna Sayers and Millie Weeden (swimming), Siena Keijasers (hockey), Cameron Weir and Albert Maskell (frisbee), Ranjuo Tomblin and LeAnne Tomblin (synchronised swimming), Maddy Barnes (shooting) and Louis Dean (baseball). Set4Success also presents an award for Outstanding Achievement, sponsored by Christ’s Hospital School. This year’s recipient is Fynn Talley, currently on a two-year apprenticeship at Brighton

and Hove Albion FC. The goalkeeper has represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level. Fynn was away with his club, so his parents attended on his behalf. Hosting the ceremony, S4S Committee Member Mike Sutton paid tribute to the charity’s founder John Le Rossignol. Mr Sutton said: “John was a big man with a big heart. We would not be sitting here without him and the 140 previous award winners would not have been recognised without his vision. One week before John passed away, last year's Outstanding Achievement winner, Emily Orman, signed her first professional contract with Chelsea, which is John's team. I can't think of a more fitting way to represent his legacy to Set4Success.” Mike Sutton also praised the young recipients for their dedication and commitment. He said: “Despite the many advancements and support available to young people today, life is faster, busier and if you want to reach the pinnacle of sport, is far more competitive and intense than it once was. There are more distractions, greater expectations and increased pressure. Those of you receiving awards should not only be proud of your achievements, but conscious of the responsibility you have in being role models to your peers. In a world obsessed with instant gratification, you are the embodiment of resilience, creativity, aspiration and a growth mind-set.” For more details or to apply for a future Set4Success Award, visit: www.set4success.org

NYE DOUBLES CHARITY GRANT

YEs Building Supplies has announced it will be doubling the funding amount awarded to local charities and community groups for its 2020 ‘Proud to be Local’ campaign. Proud to be Local, which has been running for two years, gives away £500, four times per year, to local groups and charitable endeavours that have been nominated by the public. 2019’s winners included Trafalgar Infant School, 1st Roffey Scout Group, Girlguiding Horsham and Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School. For 2020, NYEs Building Supplies will be increasing the amount to £1000 per charity. The Kingsfold-based business is calling out for nominations during January. Three nominations will then be shortlisted for a public vote to decide the winner. Rex Nye, Managing Director of NYEs Building Supplies, said: "It has been an absolute pleasure to help fund a

variety of local charities and community groups over the past two years. The work being done by these worthy causes doesn’t go unnoticed and we want to make even more of a mark in 2020 to highlight their contributions and reward their commitment to making a difference to our community. We would like as many people to get involved as possible by sending in a nomination and spreading the word about Proud to be Local. Who knows, your charity could be the recipient of £1000.” To make a nomination, simply email details of the cause and how the £1,000 would be used to proudtobelocal@dwnye.co.uk. Alternatively, nominations can be posted to D.W. Nye Proud to be Local c/o PMW Communications, Stane Court, Stane Street, Billingshurst RH14 9HP. any people find that spring is a time to reflect and make decisions about changes they would like in their lives. The Group, a Sussex club for unattached men and women aged 50+, has venues in Burgess Hill, Horsham, Lewes, Worthing and Brighton. It’s not a dating agency but it does offer a great opportunity to meet new friends of both sexes in a welcoming atmosphere. Says Tricia Bentley, co-founder of The Group, “Organisations like ours attract more women than men. We’re not really sure why that is except that women generally tend to enjoy networking. The men who are our members would confirm, though, that it’s a very enjoyable club to be in and, once they’ve crossed the threshold, they all become actively

involved with events.” says Tricia, “And we have a great time. So come on guys! Push open that door, come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome.” There are walks, pub evenings, theatre trips, golf, lunches and dinners, holidays, and much more. The Group has been going for 14 years and now has over 300 members. They’ve created a website, www.thegroup.org.uk, which tells you everything you need to know. Going into a room full of people you don’t know can be difficult, but not with The Group. You’ll get a good welcome. Where do they meet? The Group meet in Horsham on the 4th Monday of the month - take a look at www.thegroup.org.uk

ncephalitozoon cuniculi is a parasite that infects rabbits and can cause disease which affects the nervous system and kidneys. Transmission occurs via spores shed in urine that are ingested or less commonly inhaled. The parasite can also be transmitted via the placenta during pregnancy. Over 50% of rabbits in the UK have been exposed however not all will develop clinical signs. Immunocompromised humans can be affected as the parasite is zoonotic. Clinical signs include: Increased thirst and urination, weight loss, reduced appetite, urinary incontinence, blindness, head tilt, loss of balance, hindlimb weakness or paralysis and seizures. A blood test can be performed to determine if a rabbit has been exposed to E.cuniculi but as exposure does not always result in clinical signs, a positive result is not proof of the disease. Treatment involves administration of a worming medication daily for a month, to stop multiplication of the parasite and reduce shedding of spores. Unfortunately if severe clinical signs are present, euthanasia is often kindest. In order to prevent disease occurring recently acquired rabbits should be treated with appropriate worming medication daily for a month to eliminate the parasite. This has no long term preventative effect and therefore treatment is advised every 3-6 months if rabbits may be exposed to spores. Disinfection of hutches with a bleach based product will reduce environmental spores and it is advisable to raise food bowls and use water bottles to minimise urine contamination. VEGAN FEST HORSHAM

F

ollowing the amazing success of Vegan Fest Horsham in February last year, the plantbased fair is returning to the Drill Hall on Saturday 25th April with, as before, all profits going to charity. The 2019 event saw around 2,000 people pass through the door – vegans, vegetarians and those curious to seek out some vegan alternatives! Although Vegan Fest Horsham will be welcoming back some of its stallholders from last year, there will be plenty of new faces, too, including some vegan-friendly Horsham based businesses. There will be over 40 stalls in the main hall offering a vast array of products including vegan chocolates, beauty products, cakes, books, cheese, household items, nutrition and environmental advice, as well as a number of catering stalls offering a wide range of delicious hot and cold foods. In addition, wine and locally produced beer will be available in the bar area, together with hot drinks. There will also be a series of free talks throughout the day focusing on a variety of topics. Plus there may also be a guest appearance from the actor Peter Egan! The celebrity will be talking about his work with the charity Animals Asia and his own vegan journey.

52

MARCH/APRIL 2020

The interest in veganism in both the UK and the rest of the world is growing rapidly, with a record number of people taking part in Veganuary at the start of the year. There are some excellent vegan alternatives to most animal based foods these days, so following a vegan lifestyle is becoming far easier. For many, the transition to veganism is triggered by awareness of the cruelty to animals in both the meat and dairy industry. For others it may be for health reasons, as it now generally accepted that a well-planned plant-based diet can bring many long-term health benefits. But for most, the decision to follow a vegan lifestyle goes hand in hand with knowing that overall it is considered a more environmentally friendly way of living. So whether you are a fully-fledged vegan or just need some ideas or a bit of inspiration for a vegan friend or relative, do come along and take a look! Vegan Fest Horsham will be at the Drill Hall in Denne Road, Horsham on Saturday 25th April 2020 from 10.30am till 4.30pm. The entrance fee is £2.00 per person (under 16’s free) and all profits will be going jointly to The Born Free Foundation and Animals Asia (UK registered charities). Along with his medical skill he brought great artistic talent and flair for capturing life as lived in the District in the 1930-60s. His genius was capturing in a few strokes, on the back of napkins, envelopes and the more formal painting, the humour of life. He follows in the tradition of Rowlandson, but without the cutting edge. John R Abbey - Horsham's Greatest Book Collector 10th Jan 2020 to 28th Mar 2020 For over 30 years one time Storrington resident Major J R Abbey built up one of the greatest collections of books based on those attributes. This small exhibition celebrates his passion with

books and photographs. Major Abbey died on Christmas eve 1969. Causeway House, Horsham: 600 Years and Counting 17th Jan 2020 to 21st Mar 2020 Now home to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery this house began its life 600 years ago as an office, workshop for a medieval merchant, later in middle age becoming a tailors home, before in its more mature years helping out in the war effort, 1940s and 50s civil defence rather than Home Guard. Its rich and varied life has been etched in to its “skin and bones”. Highlights from the Archives 17th Jan 2020 to 18th Apr 2020 Highlights from the Archives Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is home to thousands of photographs that depict the people and places of Horsham District, as well as images brought back to Horsham from around the world.
