Introduction
Lesser Poland is the real capital of rest and relaxation! What would be a better spot for resting than the spas of Lesser Poland? Eight resorts open their doors behind which we will find relaxation and regeneration.
The resorts of Lesser Poland base their offer on the natural treasures present in the region. A beneficial climate, omnipresent nature, waters – mineral, geothermal, sulphide or brine ones, and peat make the offer of treatments, either healing, relaxing or beautifying ones, rich and unique. The properties of mineral waters have been known for hundreds of years – they were successfully used already in the ancient times and the names of the resorts of Lesser Poland indicate that in the area of Poland they were popular during the Middle Ages. The name of Krynica was coined after ‘krzynice’ which meant ‘springs’ and the name of Szczawnica comes from ‘szczawa’ which means acidulous water.
Comfortable, climatic and luxurious infrastructure was created around the springs of mineral water which
enables people to benefit from them in a variety of ways. Due to the fact that waters have healing properties, health visitors come to spas to support the treatment of various ailments they suffer from. However, treatments are not only directed at the sick! Everyone who desires relaxation, tranquillity, regeneration of one’s body and mind will find something for themselves in the resorts –peat treatments, massages, sauna, yoga, SPA treatments, inhalations and mineral water baths.
Swoszowice are based on sulphide waters which, apart from healing properties, have a positive influence on our appearance. Rabka is famous for brine and Czarny Dunajec makes use of geothermal waters. Uście Gorlickie and Wysowa are a green oasis of relaxation. Krynica equals luxurious hotels with modern Spa&Wellness zones. Muszyna tempts with a mild climate and waters. Piwniczna is the heart of the Poprad River Valley – there is a beneficial microclimate supported by green forests and mineral waters which spring up from the earth’s interior.
The route of the trip
Piwniczna-Zdrój, tucked into the ranges of Radziejowa, Jaworzyna Krynicka and the Poprad Foothills, is famous for mineral waters – they have incredible flavour and healing properties which they gain while flowing under the ground through the rocks of Magura nappes on which the town and the whole Beskid Sądecki is situated. Flowing through rocks, waters saturate with numerous elements and microelements in order to spring up as rich, healing waters.
Even though mineral waters were discovered in the area in the 19th century, Piwniczna became the health and recreation centre in 1932. It is when the first boreholes were drilled. Since that time. The town has changed a lot. A lot
of investments have been made into the infrastructure which lets us enjoy the treasures of nature. The Spa Park and the Artistic Mineral Water Pump Room were created for those who want to taste the waters of Piwniczna and take part in a variety of cultural events. There are charming alleys and an amphitheatre where open-air concerts are organised. There is also a playground.
For those who seek something more than crenotherapy, the spa infrastructure was created in Piwniczna-Zdrój. On the basis of the mineral waters, the climate by the Poprad River, the landform and the omnipresent nature, places like guest houses or hotels were established and they offer a variety of Spa&Wellness treatments.

Magdalena Żuber
A well-being expert!
Wellbeing on a meadow in the Beskids
Magdalena Żuber has found her way to rest, regenerate and calm down not in comfortable, air-conditioned rooms but in Piwniczna-Zdrój, in the outdoors, on a meadow by the Poprad River. No one else knows better how many aspects of our body, mind and soul can be healed by direct contact with nature. Thanks to vast experience and various interests, she combines wellness, well-being and work-life balance.
First and foremost, Magdalena is a mental coach who teaches people how to develop their potential and achieve inner balance and harmony. Apart from being a mental coach, she is a fitness instructor of Open Mind School and Aerial Yoga. During her Mental Body Flow classes ‘Oh Joga i Złap Oddech’ (Oh Yoha and Catch your Breath) she shows how to take care of the proper functioning of your organism. As the only in the south of Poland and the third in the country
FloatFit AquaPhycisal instructor, she implements a holistic and modern training on special AquaBase mats on water.
Working as a Spa & Wellness therapist with a specialisation in ayurveda, Hawaiian or Thai massages she helps to take care of your psychological, physical and emotional well-being. Sulphur for health and beauty
There is one estate in the capital of Lesser Poland which wields the status of a spa! The estate, Swoszowice, is in the south of Cracow – it is the only spa in Poland located within a big city and also one of the oldest spas in the country!
The natural treasure of Swoszowice is sulphur and sulphide water. Its pro-health properties were taken advantage of already in the Middle Ages and it is said that it might have been known even earlier. A legend says that Skuba vel Dratewka, a shoemaker, stuffed a sheep with sulphur from Swoszowice and gave it to the Wawel Dragon. Sulphur upset the dragon’s stomach but herds of tourists have been using it to improve their health and take care of their beauty.
Sulphur started to be extracted in Swoszowice in 1415 – it was a really desirable resource as it constituted an ingredient of gunpowder. A mine was established in Swoszowice which operated until the second half of the 19th century.
At the time of Galicia, 85% of the whole sulphur extraction in Austria-Hungary came from the place.
Sulphide water from Swoszowice was also well-known a few hundreds years ago – it was described by a court doctor of Stephen Batory, a French doctor, Jakub Esprinchard in the 16th century who claimed that a stay in a mine treated plague.
Józef Dietl, a doctor, a promoter of Polish spas and the president of Cracow, believed that highly mineralised sulphide waters, which are present at the place, are one of the best in Europe. He tried to create a spa based on sulphide water which would suit European standards. It was popular for a long time among citizens of Cracow and visitors. We can benefit from the waters of Swoszowice until today – as far as the content of sulphur is concerned, they take the fourth place in Europe. They are used either in healing and beautifying treatments.

The brine from Rabka for beauty
The brine of Rabka was taken advantage of already in the 13th century. It was first written about in 1721 but the first chemical analysis which confirmed its beneficial qualities was carried out in 1858. Then, it turned out that one of the strongest iodine-bromine brines in Europe flowed out from the local springs. Today, they constitute the foundation of the spa and are well used either in Spa&Wellness zones or cosmetic industry. Properly used brine conditions and nourishes, has antibacterial properties, treats skin with acne, psoriasis or mycosis. It lies halfway between Rysy and Babia Mountain in the area which has been strongly transformed by vanishing agriculture and sparsely wooded but still attractive in terms of geology, nature and landscape.
One of the biggest curiosities of the commune are boglands which used to be vast and now are in the form of isolated islands. They are raised alpine bogs called ‘puścizny’ grown with rare plants characteristic of such ecosystems. However, the biggest treasure of the commune are geothermal waters hidden deep underground.
Thanks to them, the complex of geothermal swimming pools was erected in Chochołów – the greatest attraction of the commune.

A spa in the heart of the Pieniny
Szczawnica Commune is located in one of the most beautiful corners of Poland, in the heart of the Pieniny Mountains and on the edge of the Beskid Sądecki. Szczawnica, the town, is its seat – there the spa heart of the commune pounds. East of the former Shlakhtov Ruthenia which comprises two villages – Jaworki and Szlachtowa – stretches. The villages are located in the valley of the Grajcarek, on the border between the Pieniny and the Radziejowa Range of the Beskid Sądecki. On one hand, we have a town with a rich history, beautiful historic sites and springs of mineral water. On the other hand, there are peaceful villages located in beautiful mountains full of sheep, shepherds and Ruthenian traditions.
Szczawnica was granted the status of a spa in 1924; however, its spa history is longer which is visible in the name of the place. The name ‘Szczawnica’ was taken from the word ‘szczawa’ which denotes acidulous water. The name must have been used by local highlanders much earlier. The development of Szczawnica as a spa started during the
time of Józef Stefan Szalay. It was him who initiated the construction of the first spa buildings and guest houses. Szalay organised the first rafting on the Dunajec and initiated the creation of Droga Pienińska (the Pieniny Tract). In the second half of the 19th century Szczawnica was a popular resort thanks to Józef Dietl’s support. Matejko, Prus, Konopnicka or Sienkiewicz honoured the place with their presence. Another important owner of Szczawnica was the Stadniccy Family. After the Second World War, the spa was nationalised. At the time a lot of trade sanatoria were erected, especially the ones which aimed at the treatment of occupational diseases of miners and foundry workers. The heirs of the Stadniccy Family took over the spa in 2005.
Nowadays, Szczawnica is still a well-known and frequently chosen resort. Visitors benefit from mineral waters and the climate of the Pieniny. Moreover, people come to the place to take advantage of various attractions.
