February is Black History Month. In 1926, Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and members of his Association for the Study of Negro Life and History organized Negro History Week hoping to raise awareness of Black contributions to history and culture. Over time, Negro History Week became increasingly popular. American cities started their own celebrations, Black history clubs were formed and teachers demanded resources for their classrooms. Fifty years later, in 1976, the week expanded to Black History Month (sometimes called African American History Month).
At KQED, one of the ways we honor and celebrate Black History Month is by curating documentaries, series and shows related to it. In the listings, which begin on page 8, you’ll see Black History Shows highlighted in orange. Here’s a selection of what you’ll see on KQED Public Television or by streaming on KQED Passport or the KQED Video App.

Justin Holland: The Guitar’s Black Pioneer
On the first day of Black History Month, KQED features a radio special about Justin Holland, a Black, too-often unrecognized classical guitar pioneer. Holland was a musician, abolitionist and educator in the 19th century. He wrote more than 30 original compositions; many transcriptions of popular operas and songs; and a range of respected, influential books on guitar pedagogy. A contemporary of Frederick Douglass, his activism included working with the Underground Railroad.
In American Public Media’s Justin Holland: The Guitar’s Black Pioneer, Holland expert Professor Ernie Jackson discusses his life, work and influence with a personal reflection on how Holland’s music offers him hope and inspiration. With more recognition, perhaps it can offer the same to all of us.
Justin Holland: The Guitar’s Black Pioneer airs on KQED Public Radio 88.5FM on February 1, at 10pm and repeats on February 2, at 1am. You can also stream it on the KQED App. —Devin Holt, On-Air Digital Programming Assistant
PODCASTS

STARTER EPISODE
“The Story Behind the Bay Area’s Favorite Sandwich Bread” Bay Curious, a podcast that explores the more curious aspects of the Bay Area, was such a find for this Bay Area transplant. I’m a foodie and was lucky to find an episode where I can get some answers to the unique foods of my new home. I always assumed San Francisco was all about sourdough, but Bay Curious set me straight!
STARTER EPISODE
“Jerry Lee
Lewis: The Killer and Getting Away with Murder”
Music? Murder? Mayhem? What’s not to love! Exploring the most insane criminal stories surrounding music legends is always fascinating. I particularly love learning about stories that happened before my time. Start Disgraceland from the beginning with Episode 1 about Jerry Lee Lewis and the unbelievable ways he got away with murder.
STARTER EPISODE “Arrival on St. Helena”
I found the Extremities podcast during the lockdown when I yearned to travel to far-flung places. I imagined what it must be like to live in a nonpandemic bubble in some of the world’s most isolated places. I was always particularly drawn to St. Helena, one of the hardest places to reach and Napoleon’s place of exile. Who needs Amazon when Extremities delivers the world to your door!

The Stand: How One Gesture Shook the World
What better place to take a stand? is a question that echoes through this powerful documentary. The Stand delves into the circumstances that compelled San Jose State University athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos to make an iconic gesture of defiance at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City during a critically important and volatile time for the civil rights movement. Fifty years later, their story remains deeply inspiring, controversial and even misunderstood. This film is one of the best I've seen that shares this history, with Bay Area roots, that resonated throughout the world.

Who Invented Monopoly? Discover the Surprising Untold Story
Who hasn’t played Monopoly, the classic capitalism board game where you compete to gain property and wealth? According to its official origin story, Charles Darrow, an amateur inventor, sketched out the now-famous Monopoly board on his kitchen table during the Depression. The game became a bestseller, Darrow became wealthy and Parker Brothers was saved from bankruptcy. It’s your classic success story. The only problem: It isn’t true.
Part detective story, part sharp social commentary and part pop-culture celebration, Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History from American Experience takes you back in time to tell the untold true story behind the game’s invention, which features a feminist
DID YOU KNOW? Board Games
named Lizzie Magie, many other individuals and a well-known game company. It’s a tale of theft, obsession and corporate double-dealing. I won’t give it away here, but I will say that Magie — who was also an actor, poet, engineer and follower of progressive economic theories — invented Monopoly progenitor The Landlord’s Game, which was designed to illustrate the evils of landlords and monopolies. You can credit Ralph Anspach, an economics professor and ardent anti-monopolist (seen on the cover of this issue) for uncovering Monopoly’s fascinating story. Ruthless: Monopoly’s Secret History airs on Monday, February 20, at 9pm on KQED 9. It will also stream on KQED Passport at the time of broadcast.
Ellyn Hament, Managing Editor
• In 2007, a modern version of Monopoly was flown aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. The American public chose the Johnson Space Center as the most distinctive landmark in Houston. It was given an orange property space on the game board.
• John Spinello invented Operation in 1962 when he was a sophomore at the University of Illinois. He sold the rights to renowned toy designer Marvin Glass for $500 and the promise of a job when he graduated.

Underneath the streets of London, more than ten thousand construction workers race to build a brand new metro line called Crossrail.
