Help keep our Cross on the hill shining

The 28th of March this year marks two decades nine months and 24 days since Christians from various churches in and around Tzaneen gathered at Tzaneen Dam’s wall to bare witness to the unveiling of the area’s most iconic landmark.

It was a humid summer’s evening in 2002, and the occasion was the official inauguration of the huge white cross which stands guard outside the town’s entrance on the koppie in Deerpark. Today it is regarded as one of Tzaneen’s standout landmarks. Bulletin spoke to one of the founding members of this iconic landmark, Chris Lombard.

“The inauguration with an attendance of between 2 000 and 3 000

Christian worshippers is until today regarded as one of the largest gatherings of people ever seen on the dam

wall,” he said. “It also provided authorities with one of the largest traffic congestions in Tzaneen, but nevertheless, it was a very successful event and will be remembered by everyone who was there that evening.”

A financial stumbling block has since emerged which threatens the very existence of the Cross.

“The sponsor responsible for the electricity bill has informed our custodians of the Cross that it is not able to pay for the bill any longer. This is all due to the financial woes many companies suffer from these days as a result from amongst other elements, the ongoing business destroying electricity crisis on top of an already weak economy.”

Lombard and his fellow custodians are hard at work to identify new sponsors who will be able to help pay the electricity bill.

“We don’t know the estimated

monthly costs currently, because the bill was paid on our behalf, so we never knew the figures and that is something we as the founders also need to establish.”

The Cross towers about 16m up and weighs 1,8 tons and is mounted on a concrete foundation of 6 cubic me-

ters. The front and back of the Cross is lit up by 32 fluorescent bulbs, 16 in the front and 16 at the back end. People who are willing to contribute to this cause can contact the office of the NG Moedergemeente Tzaneen on 015 307 6865 or 060 560 0554 or Chris Lombard on 083 301 4368.

Allegations of fraud investigated

Bulletin broke the news of alleged fraud being committed by councillors at the Greater Tzaneen Municipality related to travel claims submitted by the attendees after they returned from a three-day long strategic planning session at the luxurious Forever Resorts Blyde in Mpumalanga.

The outing cost the municipality’s rate payers R850 000 to accommodate and feed 136 councillors. The fact that there exists a number of adequate local venues for this strategic planning session was ignored by the municipality who tried to justify their expenditure by claiming that the meeting was so important that the councillors dare not be interrupted during their sessions, which is why they had to leave the province.

Then came the travel claims two weeks later. Because the municipality reimbursed each of these councillors who travelled to the important meeting in their own vehicles. The trouble came however, when it was reported that some of these councillors submitted travel claims for vehicles which they do not own. Case in point was one claim submitted for a Porsche whilst this individual does not even own a car. Another councillor lodged a travel

claim despite not having travelled in their own vehicle, but riding along with a colleague.

Initially the DA’s Caucus Whip in Tzaneen, Lebbeus Ramalepe, was very vocal about the party’s stance on corruption and their condemnation of the allegations. “The Democratic Alliance is aware of the irregularities through a whistle-blower and we are busy investigating the situation as it is much broader than just councillors, it involves all who attended and we are still getting all the facts of what happened. Once our investigation is complete we will keep the rate payers of the municipality informed on how we will hold those involved accountable in order to recover possible unlawfully appropriated funds in our quest to hold the Greater Tzaneen municipality accountable and safeguard its coffers to ensure service delivery is prioritised,” he said two weeks ago.

Since then, we have attempted to gain further comment on the matter from him, but he referred us back to the GTM stating “please refer all your questions to the Greater Tzaneen Municipality spokesperson in the name of Neville Ndlala. Thanks.”

We found this response disheartening as it would

appear as though the zeal with which this particular situation was initially confronted, seemed to have diminished.

We sent our inquiries to the GTM and Ndlala responded. “We have noted the complaints about fraudulent travel claims and we are of the view that these allegations require a thorough investigation. These allegations must however be directed to the Ethics committee through the Office of the Speaker. These allegations must be tested.”

He went on to explain that councillors are reimbursed for travel claims upon submitting an attendance register as proof that they travelled on official council business. The municipality is currently working on a travel policy for councillors. According to him, that policy would provide clear guidelines on the reimbursement of travel costs as well as conditions for such to happen.

“The Greater Tzaneen Municipality has a zero tolerance of fraud and corruption and as such we have setup an AntiFraud and Corruption Hotline 0800 44 66 44. Members of the public are welcome to report acts of fraud and corruption by municipal employees and/or councillors to the hotline. They can do so anonymously.”

Craters engulf parking bays Two die in fatal R81 crash

When the Greater Tzaneen Municipality spends R850 000 on a three day strategic planning session for their councilors and managers at a luxury holiday resort in Mpumalanga, one would expect that at least the basics at their own house was in order. Especially when infrastructure, something as simple as a parking space in the central business district (CBD) that represents a public swimming pool, deteriorate right under the noses of these council leaders. This damaged parking bay (pictured), caused mostly by storm water from the past months’ rainfall, was noticed by the Bulletin at the beginning of January this year (2023). This parking spot is situated on the corner of Peace and Skirving Streets where a host of businesses are located.

Bulletin again visited the area this week, Wednesday the 1st of February, to see if the Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM) perhaps have fixed it since it was first noticed. The parking lot has degraded even further and is no longer fit for any vehicle to utilize. Speaking to a couple of business owners and managers in the vicinity, Bulletin has learnt that the surface of this parking bay started falling apart as far

back as October last year. And that none of these businesses reported the matter to the municipality and pressured GTM to do something about the damage.

It is also astounding that none of the employees at the GTM noticed this massive gaping hole situated on route to the Whitehouse. We sent the details of this crater to the GTM’s communications director, Neville Ndlala, for comment and a plan forward, but at the time of going to print, we had not received any feedback.

Furthermore, on the burst waterpipe in King Edward Drive which has been temporarily fixed by the GTM and cordoned off with barrier tape so that motorists don’t drive into it; residents living close to the damaged pipe, said the pipe burst about three weeks ago and has not been tended to since.

Perhaps the way things work, is that the community pay for road inspection teams to find and repair potholes, clean stormwater drains and check for damaged curbstones, but then have to report these tyre-eating traps to the inspection team, to allow them to inspect and repair.

We will have an update on this matter in our next edition.

The T-junction at Mooketsi on the R81 route linking the Gyiani road to that of Modjadjiskloof and Polokwane, claimed the lives of two people and left one with critical injuries on Friday morning the 27th of January.

According to Ronald Matjiakgang, the site manager from Vea Road Maintenance and Civils, the driver of a German luxury sedan failed to stop at the stop sign and entered the road unsafely.

Vea Road Maintenance and Civils is a contracting firm doing maintenance work for the South African National Roads Agency SOC (SANRAL) on the R81 and

R36 roads.

A truck with a trailer travelling from the direction of Polokwane towards Modjadjiskloof which had the right of way, had no chance of avoiding the luxury sedan that suddenly appeared in its path. The driver of the truck was not injured, but clearly shocked afte the accident.

“Consultants are currently looking at several solutions to present to our client, SANRAL, that will help to prevent such accidents from happening again,” said Matjiakgang. “We had several accidents along the R81 route and towards Segopo village, but Friday’s fatal accident was the first this year at that particular intersection.”

Bystanders who witnessed the horrific accident as well as established residents and business owners in the area said they have pleaded with authorities to either erect traffic lights or a circle, similar to those in Mankweng and closer to Polokwane on the R71 route, which will help prevent such fatalities from occurring again. The question though, if a stop sign cannot even prevent a driver of a vehicle from coming to a complete stop, would a traffic light or a circle be more effective? And is it not time for road users to be rather more considerate towards other road users and to actually start obeying the road rules?

Aqua sinkhole finally fixed

Aqua Avenue which connects the bottom end of Aqua Park to the turn at Jetty 3 is one of the most travelled routes in town. In fact, it turns into Annecke Street which runs all the way past Golden Acres and Heritage to connect to the R71. The retirement village, Macadamia is situated at the T-junction between Aqua Avenue and Alan Burman Street.

It is here, at this intersection that the road started to sink. Bulletin was informed about this unfortunate event at the start of December last year and we have watched this gradually sink deeper and deeper until eventually the indentation was so severe that vehicles used the opposite lane to traverse the intersection for fear of damaging their suspension.

The matter was reported on, and the public reported it to the municipality. Yet, despite this, and despite the best efforts by the ward councilors, nothing was done to rectify the problem. This de-

spite most of the top management and councilors at the GTM residing along this road.

This week Bulletin paid another visit to the site and we were pleasantly greeted by the site of the GTM roads maintenance team hard at work repairing the road. Foreman Leslie had already removed the old road surface with a front-end loader. According to him, they make use of a cold tar process to fix the road permanently. He said the cold tar mixture also sets much faster than the traditional hot tar which enabled them to do repairs much faster and more efficiently. He also said that cold tar is more user friendly in all weather conditions.

“Like when it rains now, with hot tar there is no option but to wait until it is dry before we can continue. But with this cold mix we can finish the repairs the same day, even if it rains.”

After the team spread the fresh cold tar evenly over the gaping hole in the road, one of the workers flattened the surface with a roller to ensure an even surface. Leslie said this repair will certainly last the distance it is required to do.

Wysneusies bult hul spiere behoorlik Fransie Visse seevier

Vet pret en samekoms by Larrieland se atletiekdag

Klofies skitter in hul Prestige Atletiekbyeenkoms

Test your tuffness this March

Athletes from Tzaneen and surrounding areas can once again prepare themselves for the ninth instalment of the annual Spar Tzaneen Tuffy 4-in-1 marathon which is regarded as one of the toughest road races in Limpopo. Although some would argue the toughest in the country.

This event, organised by the Tzaneen Marathon Club in partnership with SPAR Tzaneen, Aida Properties and Aquelle Mineral Water, takes place on the 11th of March and will start at Lombard Avocado situated at Farm AB 34 on the Old Coach House Road outside Tzaneen.

Athletes competing in the Tuffy can enter for the mighty 42.2km race. For the less brave runners there is a choice of shorter distances including a 21.2km, 10km and a 5km fun run. The 42.2km starts at 06:00 and the other distances at 07:00.

“The amazing atmosphere and the scenic route of this event will be complimented by various food stalls, music

and a beer garden”, said Tertius Erasmus, chairperson of Tzaneen Marathon Club. Photos of the entire race day will be available online courtesy of the keen eye of local photographer, Joe Dreyer.

Online entries close on the 19th of February and all entrants will receive a free Tuffy moisture management T-shirt. All participants will also receive a goody bag, buff, foam peak and uniquely designed Tuffy medal.

The race numbers and T-shirts for all online entries can be collected at Aida Properties, 38 Boundary Street in Tzaneen on Friday the 10th of March from 14:00 until 18:00 or at the start of the event from 05:00 to 05:45.

Organisers of the SPAR Tuffy 4-in-1 Marathon advised participants to ensure they arrive as early as possible given that approximately 1 000 athletes are expected to compete.

For any inquiries people can contact Tertius Erasmus on 071 363 5124 or Wicus van Vuuren on 083 391 0172 can be contact for any further information.
