Phase 1: Testing for safety, this is the first in human trials.
Phase 2: This phase moves forward with safety and first-time use for a specific medical diagnosis.
Phase 3: Moving forward with safety and efficacy, Phase 3 continues to test the treatment— from here the pharmaceutical company will make the decision to file with the FDA as a new drug.
Phase 4: This phase is concerned with safety monitoring for long-term effects. Most of these trials are post-market and observational.
