It’s time to gear up with your library. Newly added items for your next outdoor adventure are here! The Active Living Lifestyle Collection has expanded to include binoculars, fishing rods and walking poles.

Just in time for the height of spring bird migration, borrow a set of Tasco 10X42 Binoculars. Whether you’re chasing down warblers, stargazing or watching your outfielder make the perfect catch, these binoculars offer a bright, clear view of the action.

WALKING POLES

Whether you’re traversing rough terrain or walking the beach, walking poles keep you balanced. When used correctly, walking poles can activate more muscle groups than walking alone, while alleviating strain on sensitive joints.

FISHING RODS

Have some “reel” family fun and borrow a fishing rod and tackle box from Lambton County Library. Take advantage of free fishing days on Mother’s Day weekend (May 13-14) and Father’s Day weekend (June 17-18).

From Februrary 6 to March 10, 2023, homeschool, elementary and secondary school classes were invited to participate in the ‘Clash of the Classrooms’ Reading Challenge.

The challenge was hosted in partnership with Chatham-Kent Public Library (CKPL) with the goal of fostering teamwork and a love of reading within the classroom.

Time students spent reading in and out of class during the challenge was added to class reading totals. Classes earned badges for reaching reading milestones and completing activities.

Early Literacy

Give your child a head start on early literacy at Lambton County Library. Early literacy is what kids know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Lambton County Library offers a variety of events that help foster early literacy, family literacy and lifelong learning.

Baby Rhyme Time

AGES 0 - 2

Learn new songs, activities and games that you can share with your baby and play a key role in your child’s development. This 30-minute story time includes movement games, rhymes, songs and stories to help your baby recognize colours, shapes, letters and numbers.

Toddler Tales

AGES 2 - 3

Learn new songs, activities and games that you can share with your toddler anytime and play a key role in their early literacy development. Experience the positive effects of reading, talking, singing and playing - important activities for brain development in children - through stories and songs suitable for children ages 2 to 3 during this library staff-led story time.

Nicole Aszalos, Lambton County Archives Archivist/ Supervisor, will discuss how photographs have evolved over time, including tips and tricks on how to preserve these memories for future generations. She will share information about various types of photo damage and proper storage for your photo collections.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP

Lambton County Archives will discuss the history of emergencies in Lambton County and the surrounding area. Local Emergency Management Coordinators will outline emergency planning principles for both families and municipalities. Participants will learn how to create their own personal emergency plan, assemble a 72-hour emergency supplies kit, how to shelter-in-place and evacuate, and subscribe for public safety alerts. This workshop will close with a Q&A and a draw for a starter Home 72-Hour Emergency Supplies Kit, generously sponsored by Lambton BASES.

“Many Lives Mark This Place”

Exhibition dates: April 14 - September 9, 2023

John Hartman (b. 1950) embarked on a project to capture the intimate relationship between more than thirty leading Canadian authors and the places that inspire them. Hartman’s diverse roster of subjects included writers Esi Edugyan, Ruth Ozeki, M.G. Vassanji, Thomas King, Lisa Moore, Neil Bissoondath, Susan Swan and David Macfarlane. The result was a body of large-format portrait paintings that celebrate the richness of Canada’s literary fabric.

“Many Lives Mark this Place” will feature a selection of large-scale paintings from Hartman’s portraits series. Through powerfully uniting the parallel fields of literature and visual art, Hartman underscores our collective desire to take inspiration and celebrate Canada from coast to coast. The portraits speak to the power of the imagination in experiencing physically, emotionally, and philosophically the diverse landscapes of our country and the stories that they hold.

ONE SEED LAMBTON PREPARING YOUR GARDEN

Sipkens Nurseries will explain how to get ready to plant your seeds, when to plant them, and how to plant them in either a backyard garden or a container garden. One Seed Lambton is a program to encourage everyone to grow their own produce and save their own seeds for next year’s planting. Seeds will be available for all participants to take. All levels of gardening experience are welcome from those who have never grown a single plant to those with green thumbs.
