Inverleigh and Districts Good Friday Appeal News

The Inverleigh and District Good Friday Appeal Family Fun Day will be held on Good Friday the 7th of April 2023 from 10am till 5 pm at Victoria Park in Inverleigh.

There will be carnival rides, Mik Maks, Wildlife Xposure, Fun Farm 2U, live and silent auction, spinning wheel, food and market stalls, classic cars, Easter egg hunt and more.

This year we celebrate our return after a four-year break due to COVID. To welcome you all back we have two new and exciting activities. The first is a Teddy Bear Hospital proudly supported and run by the Inverleigh CWA. Your child will be able to buy a Teddy, name it and help make their Teddy all better again. The second is a Toy Workshop proudly supported and run by the Bannockburn Men’s Shed. Your child will be able to build their very own wooden toy to keep.

We would also like to give a big shout out to the Leigh Valley Lions Club who will be running our BBQ. Without the support of these three community groups and many others we would not be able to put on this great community event.

We are always looking for more support, donations, and volunteers. If you would love to help in some way, please contact us or join our Facebook group at Inverleigh & Districts Good Friday Appeal. Looking forward to seeing you on the day.

Regards, Jay Cook 0409 234 652 email: ihdgfa@outlook. com

We are proud to announce we will run a Teddy Bear Hospital at the Inverleigh Good Friday Appeal on 7 April.

We are seeking donations of pre-loved teddy bears. Our upcoming meeting / activity dates are 29 March, 26 April, 31 May and 28 June. We are a vibrant group and always welcome new women.

Bob Kuchenmeister achieves personal goal

During my recent time meeting with Bob Kuchenmeister, I learned so much about horses and racing, having never had much to do with them. I knew which end the hay went in and I figured out which end it came out, but beyond that I personally had no idea.

I was also introduced to “Dicko” Dixon, a 7 year old, and as Bob quietly went about dressing this fine animal in harness gear for a 5 lap circuit of his training track at Inverleigh, Dicko moved about in the harnessing area, obliging Bob with every command from body

Bob, on the other hand, has been around horses for many of his 82 years on this planet and while he is a quiet achiever, he is a wealth of knowledge and, in my eyes, a very competent horse whisperer. While Bob and I together were with 2 of the horses at his property in Inverleigh, I witnessed a true horse whisperer in action. Cool and calm words flowed gently from Bob and each of the horses appreciated this atmosphere surrounding us as I soaked up all this knowledge flowing from this great man.

Leeanne Leeann is a 7 year old and started her career in harness racing as a 3 year old, and it was with this beautiful girl that Bob achieved the final leg of the triple in harness racing, a win at the 3 main trotting venues in Victoria. Bob had previously won at the Melbourne Showgrounds in 1977 at the aged of 37, and was also successful at Moonee Valley in the same year.

Fast forward to 2023 and in January, Bob, driving Leeanne Leeann, sealed the triple by winning at Melton Harness Racing Track, this completing the triple of having a win at each of the 3 recognised main tracks in Victoria. It won’t happen again, and a few have been successful before, but Bob has this great achievement to top off his career in harness racing.

harness, to head gear and finally accepting the indignity of having his tongue tied firmly in place to allow the maximum airflow to feed the carburettor of this fine animal. Harness racing is split into 2 disciplines, trotting and pacing, all to do with the leg action of the animal, and Hopples (low hanging harness about knee height) are also used to encourage the horses to keep in stride correctly.

So Dicko Dixon was all kitted up and ready for his training trip around the circuit.

Gracefully at speed is the only way I can share with you what I witnessed that morning ........ and Dicko Dixon excelled too. Bob was exacting in every command I saw, and there would have been much more to the trained eye than what I observed.

At 82, Bob is an ornament to the sport, and while he has not won the Melbourne Cup of harness racing, the Interdominion, He has achieved at 82 what no other is likely to do, 3 fantastic wins at the 3 main harness racing headquarters of the time, the Melbourne Showgrounds, Moonee Valley and Melton.

A plea from our local Opportunity Shop (Surprise Shop) Volunteers

We are mostly extremely grateful for your donations of clean quality clothes and other household items, but recently we have received many items which we are unable to sell. We must dispose of these, either in our regular curb side collections or take them to either the local tip or recycle centre and in some cases put on a local bonfire.

Currently there is a pile of items to be disposed of by our volunteers.

We ask that you do not drop the following material:-

•Furniture

•Electrical goods

•Car seats

•Suitcases

There are other places to drop your used items, including your own rubbish bins. Books /Paper/ Carboard can all be recycled in the kerbside collection or dropped off for an advertised book sale.

Small E-Waste items including mobile phones, batteries and printer cartridges can be dropped off at Officeworks.

Computers, TVs etc are recycled free at the Geelong Recycle Centre in Douro Street, North Geelong Children’s items. Geelong Mums has a good web site outlining suitable items for donations.

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include:

The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

As you can see there is a Licensed Snake Catcher available in our district. Give Mike a Call if you have a slightly unwelcome visitor. There are 2 important charity fund raisers coming up in the next 2 months. The fabulous Dachshund Derby is on the 5th of March at the inverleigh Sporting Complex. I was there last year and what a success it was. A miniature Queen Elizabeth II paid us a visit with one of her Corgi's. I wonder if King Charles will make an appearance. I did see several King Charles Spaniels last Year. And coming up on the 7th April, after a long Covid induced holiday is the Inverleigh and District Good Friday Appeal. Start putting some spare cash aside now as the Auctions will be back too.

From the Mayor’s Desk March 2023

It has been a big start to 2023 with plenty of new projects and initiatives underway across the Shire.

Reflecting on 2022, October and November saw Victoria experience record rainfall which has put a renewed spotlight on our roadways. We all know how devastating floodwaters can be and a huge task it is to rebuild, so I just wanted to take a moment to thank Council’s outdoor maintenance teams who have been working tirelessly to reinstate our roadways and other community infrastructure.

Since the unprecedented high rainfall, we have reinstated over 100 roadways with works continuing throughout 2023.

I always appreciate and acknowledge the great work they do and on behalf of my fellow Councillors, I would like to personally thank them as they continue

Lots of Little Legs

featured in the I.H.S. calendar for March 2023.

The next Inverleigh Dachshund Derby will be held on the 5th March 2023 this will be its 11th year of running the event.

The event was first created when six locals - Carol Perrett, Denise Cook, Steve Cook, Marlene Gillett, Max Gillett and Margie Taylor from Cobden who all shared the obsession of Dachshunds and having in the past attended the Port Fairy Dachshund Dash, decided to run a similar event centred around the breed. When the event first started two other locals Helen & Tony den Hartog were very instrumental in getting this event up and running. The inaugural event which commenced in 2012 was held at Victoria Park in Inverleigh, however as the event grew & with the implemented watering system at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex provided wonderful lush grass, it was decided to move the event to Railway Street.

The Dachshund Derby day consists of a program of 10 events, the most popular of these being the fancy dress, pooper scooper, cutest puppy and of course the All Breeds & Dachshund Derby which sometimes comes down to a photo finish.

The day is all about small dogs. To enter on the day your dog must be below 30cm's at the shoulder, other breeds that attend are pugs, fox terriers, schnauzers and corgis. However, all dogs are welcome on the day to come and socialise and enjoy the festivities. We anticipate that this year we

will have about 100 dogs participating on the day and approximately 20 stallholders. The majority of the stallholders will be selling a range of dog related products. Local Heather Spiller will attend with her plant stall, Teesdale CWA are having a cake stall, petting zoo & face painters for the kids and Timboon Ice-cream just to name a few. The Inverleigh Cricket Club will be running the canteen as well as a sausage sizzle so we encourage all locals to get down and support the cricketers and buy some lunch.

The event continues to grow each year with the introduction of social media we find people come from far & wide to attend. The current committee still only consists of only handful of people which is a big undertaking for such a small group.

We are fortunate we have the support of the Inverleigh Lions Club that help with the set up and pack down of marquees and manning the gate.

Our group is very proud of this event and how it has grown and we all like to think it puts Inverleigh on the map.

Golden Pens - Write side up

G’Day from the penners for March. Our poem for this month is from Karen, it was from a homework subject titled ‘Open Your Bag the Officer Said’ We think she has done a great job and we hope you enjoy it also.

We can be contacted via our email: goldenpens4@gmail.com if you would like to comment or get in touch with us.

Open your bag the officer said, I just stood there, shaking my head. He gave me a look and squinted his eye, ‘Open your bag there are people in line’.

I opened my bag and clasped the grip, The officer said to me, ‘Let go of it quick’. My heart beat like a drum, the rest of me numb, I’d just remembered what I had done.

It must have shown up in the scan before, Now I couldn’t unhook my gripping claw. The officer nodded to another who took me aside, Unclasping my hand and taking my pride.

My face was red and my eyes did leak, I knew I was now in it deep… What could I say; I knew it was wrong, But it was only a little thing I had done.

I had a little quick on my finger you see, You know how painful a quick can be. I held them in my hand and gave them a snip, And off it came very quick.

I slipped them into my bag without a thought, Now I had bloody well been caught. Those nail scissors were a sleeping gun, It wasn’t even for a bit of fun.

Now I’m that person you don’t want to be, Everyone now knows it was me. Others nodding and whispering thoughts, Shaking their heads, they’re glad they had forethought.

Thanks to:

Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Next time I holiday abroad, I’ll have a manicure before I board. I’ll get the longest talons you can get, And fly on a jet with a weapon yet…

Meet the future neighbours!

It’s been a pretty good start to the year at Inverleigh Playgroup, with sunny mornings for outdoor play and plenty of new faces. Some of our new families don’t yet live in Inverleigh but have started coming to playgroup to meet local families while their new homes are under construction. It’s nice to see how friendly everyone has been as connections start to develop, and a few have even discovered they’ll soon be next-door neighbours.

Moving to a new town is a big adjustment, so if any other families planning a move to the area would like to meet some locals, please know that you’re welcome to come along to Inverleigh Playgroup too!

POLICE REPORT FOR MARCH 2023

Hello All,

Some panels are again being pulled off the railway building at Inverleigh which is leaving the property very unsightly please discourage any youths from being there. The Teesdale Primary school recently on the holidays had some youths getting on the roof turning off the air conditioners and denting the units. Youth are only allowed to be on the grounds in the company of their parents/guardians and this has apparently been publicised in school newsletters. Both Teesdale and the Inverleigh schools now have cameras in their grounds and offenders have a good chance of being detected and identified.

I have had a report about some birds being found dead possibly shot on properties around the Terrier/Cemetery Road Inverleigh area. People should not be shooting birds and this behaviour can lead to charges and possible loss of firearms and firearm licence.

I detected an 18 yr old probationary driver from a nearby town travelling at excessive speed (158 km/h) on 14/2 around 6.45 pm on the Hamilton Hwy Barunah Plains heading East. There has been a lot of publicity about road safety in various media recently due to the high road toll especially in relation to country roads. Despite this I am still detecting risky behaviours on the road.

I am writing this in mid February and already this month I have caught 3 unlicensed drivers and 3 excessive speeders a 92/60 km/h zone (6 mth licence suspension), 90/60 & 87/60 (3 mth licence suspensions). All were travelling East on Hamilton Hwy Inverleigh coming over the bridge past the camping area.

Last year I issued just over 1000 infringements to drivers on your roads including 31 unregistered vehicles, 17 unlicensed drivers and 51 excessive speeders. I am finding though, in general the speeds of drivers I am detecting are coming down, back in 2017 I caught 141 excessive speeders in a year. In 2017 I detected 700 doing between 15 & 25 km/h over the limit whereas last year I only caught 370 in the same speed bracket. Had a recent report of an abandoned tent on the River Track Inverleigh which I attended & found to be empty. I passed the details onto the council to collect the large tent. I have been noticing a lot more campers/caravans in both camping areas which could be a result of the spirit of Tasmania now berthing at Geelong.

I have recently discovered a shedded snake skin in the yard of the Police station so if attending please be aware there may be a snake somewhere in the grounds. Keep safe

Due to the above average rainfall, the wild flowers of the Inverleigh Conservation Reserve are still flowering profusely. During a recent working bee, we found Goodenia, Chocolate Lily and Satin Everlasting, amongst others, still in bloom.

There were also plenty of birds and Kangaroos. The reserve is well worth a walk to have a look around at the moment.

Burning Season

Over the few months there will be a lot of burns conducted by the CFA, DEPI and farmers. I want to explain what the CFA is involved with here.

The local CFA brigades try each year to burn certain roadsides and reserves to both reduce the flammable fuel loadings and to also provide a fire break that can either stop a fire or provide an anchor point to help fight an oncoming fire. Often brigades help each other out and it is a great training exercise for all involved.

In a lot of instances, it also helps clean up a lot of roadside rubbish and reduce invasive grass species that can threaten native grasses. It also helps with habitat for small native animals.

So when you come across a roadside burn, one of the first things you see will be signs telling you there is a burn underway in the area. Sometimes there might be traffic controllers indicating what to do. When approaching the actual burn please travel at an appropriate speed as there can

be smoke over the road effecting visibility, people working on the burn that are near the road, and often fire trucks working on the burn.

We always try to work as safely as possible and burning while controllable, does have an element of uncertainty as wind changes or gusts can upset the best laid plans and cause the fire to escape the controlled area.

So with this in mind always look out for the personnel around the fire as you pass in case they want you to stop or move in a different direction. Also look out for them so you can pass them safely. If there is smoke over the road then please put your lights on and drive carefully like you might in a fog. Put the air conditioner setting onto recirculate so the smoke will hopefully not get into the car.

Please concentrate on the driving and don’t get distracted by what is going on with the burn off, over the years we have seen some near misses so don’t let it be you who causes an accident.

Over the last few months, we have been humbled by the support we have received from businesses, locals and community groups. We are still in the process of getting back on our feet after the floods last year but we wanted to say a huge THANK YOU, to everyone who has helped us.

Inverleigh-Leigh Valley Lions Club Not only provided funds for our EOY Celebration BBQ, but came down over the holidays for a massive working bee and clean up of our grounds, fixing damage and ensuring everything was ready for our students return to school. Haymes Paint donated the use of a humidifier to dry our school out and began painting our exterior. Rickie and the team are incredible and we are so appreciative of their generosity!

• Geelong Miniature Railway INC have done an incredible amount of work behind the scenes sourcing donations and replacement equipment. They also generously provided a Christmas gift for all of our students.

• Junk.com.au for their donation of replacement furniture.

• The staff at Westpac, Geelong West branch for their generosity.

• Shazzas Fruit & Veggies for providing the onions for our Flood Relief Bunnings BBQ

• Anaconda Stores for donating a replacement gazebo and tables. They came in super handy at our EOY Celebration BBQ

• Rebel Sport for donating some new sports equipment to replace items we lost in the flood. The soccer ball is already a big hit!

• Finally to the many local families (especially Carol and Ross Wilson and Mrs Rice) who have tirelessly donated their time, energy and resources. We are so grateful!

SHELFORD DUCK RACE

We are all so excited for the Shelford Duck Race! Our school will be running a food stall and a Gumboot Throwing competition.

Keep an eye out for our students and staff in their ‘Gumboot’ hats. Thanks for supporting our school in our major fundraising event.

We can’t wait to see you there!

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE

Date: Wednesday 22 February, 2023

COUNCIL LISTENING POSTS GET UNDERWAY

Golden Plains Shire residents are invited to take the opportunity to talk to their local Councillors about what matters to them and their community as Council’s Listening Posts program gets underway for 2023.

Throughout the year, Council listening posts will be held at the following locations:

Inverleigh

Saturday 11 March from 9.30 to 11am

Inverleigh Food Swap (outside Sonny Café), 15 High Street, Inverleigh

Linton: Saturday 1 April from 6 to 7.30pm

Food Truck and Movie Night

Bannockburn: Saturday 7 October from 9.30 to 11am

Golden Plains Farmers Market, Corners Milton & High Street, Bannockburn

Smythesdale: Saturday 18 November from 10 to 11.30am

Smythesdale Country Market, 65 Glenelg Highway, Smythesdale

Residents will have the opportunity to speak directly with Councillors and share their views on the issues that matter to them.

Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham says Councillors want the opportunity to continue to engage with residents on local issues to get a better understanding of the things that matter to them in the community.

“Council wants to ensure we are providing the right services that support the communit ies needs. It is also a great opportunity for us to update the community on Council projects, decisions and activities throughout the year.

“Council’s whole-of-council commitment to engaging with the community is about encouraging the community to share their ideas and concerns in their local areas. We love getting out and speaking with people through productive and inclusive conversations.

“I encourage the community to drop-in to the Council Listening Posts and come and chat with myself and my fellow Councillors about any topic on their minds.”

Watch Out For Mushrooms!!

When the weather is wet and humid, mushrooms and toadstools start to appear in our yards, on walk tracks and in parks.

Dogs and cats are natural scavengers and foragers.

* 3 dogs survived the Titanic.

* Dogs can be right or left pawed.

* Dogs noses are wet to help to absorb scent chemicals.

* The French sent a cat into space in 1963

* Domestic cats share 95.6% of their genetic makeup with tigers

* Cats claws are curved downward which means that they can't climb down trees head first, instead they have to back down the trunk.

There are thousands of different fungi (mushroom) species. Each with varying degrees of toxicity. It is best to presume if it's a wild mushroom, it potentially contains toxins and may be poisonous.

Mushroom toxicity varies greatly, but one thing is clear, when a mushroom is toxic, even tiny amounts can be fatal.

Signs of Mushroom Poisoning:

*Vomiting

*Salivation

*Wobbly or drunken stagger

*Diarrhoea

*Lethargy

*Seizures

*Coma

Symptoms can be quite rapid in onset, ranging from minutes to a few hours or with progressive symptoms over 3 - 14 days. Timelines are dependant on what type of mushroom has been consumed.

34 Leigh News

Toxins in Mushrooms can cause:

*Liver Damage

*Gastrointestinal upsets

*Kidney Damage

If you suspect your dog or cat has eaten a mushroom take them to the Veterinary Clinic immediately. If you have a piece of the mushroom your pet has eaten, take a photo of it or bring it to the clinic for identification. For your safety pick it up with a piece of paper and wash your hands.

Treatment for Mushroom Poisoning:

*Our vets will induce vomiting

*IV fluid treatment will be started to encourage urination and reduce toxicity in the liver and kidneys.

*Activated Charcoal is also often administered

Early intervention gives better outcomes.

Thanks Inverleigh, from Our Shire and Great Victorian Bike Ride.

“The Great Victorian Bike Ride had their final overnight stay in Inverleigh in December and the 2,000+ riders and support staff enjoyed many activities provided by local community groups and businesses.

In the post event analysis Council representatives reported that around $100,000 was spent by our visitors and local Inverleigh residents on the day with local businesses and market stall holders reporting very positive trading on the day.

The “Bag & Tag” service provided by Council officers was extremely popular and appreciated by riders who were able to pick up their goods purchased in Inverleigh the next day at Buninyong, the last stop for the 2022 Great Victorian Bike Ride.

In Bicycle Network Victoria’s post event analysis, riders recorded their enjoyable experience on the final overnight stay by nominating Inverleigh as the second favourite host town during the event with 28% of riders nominating Inverleigh over the other 6 overnight stays.”
