The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include:

The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

Peter’s Editorial

Check out the details of the Inverleigh Seniors Exercise Group (Page 19). This group has been functioning for some time now in the Presbyterian Church Hall and has now relocated to the Inverleigh Public Hall. I have been attending this group myself for quite a while now and with our new Exercise Guru, Jaxon, from Hesse Health, I have been getting a good workout each week. The group is open for anyone looking for low impact excercise training, and with new Weights, Bands and other challenges such as Balance exercises, you get your monies worth. Just $2 per session, meeting on a Thursday at 10am until 10:30 in the Inverleigh Public Hall, followed by Coffee and fellowship together at Sonny Cafe. Come and give it a try. You might surprise yourself.

Dr Vera Scantlebury Brown

On Tuesday 18th April quite a large crowd gathered under the oak trees of the Linton Avenue of Honour for the unveiling of a bronze statue of Dr Vera. Golden Plains Mayor, Brett Cunningham was the MC and the Victorian Minister for Women, Natalie Hutchins unveiled the statue with local bronze sculptor, Lucy McEachern. Lucy only had 5 photographs to help her as she made the original sculpture, which was about 600mm high. A 3D scan was made of this and enlarged to life size and caste in bronze with a grey patina, which looks somber, but lovely. The sculpture stands on a concrete pad and will be surrounded by native plants in the near future.

Linton Historical Society President, Dr Jill Wheeler had advocated to have this woman recognized, both because of her amazing career and that there are only 11 statues of Women in Victoria, but over 600 of men and dogs. This monument will attract tourists to Linton and recognize the career of Vera Scantlebury Brown.

Vera was born in Linton in 1889. Her father was a medical practitioner, who took mentally handicapped people into his home. This had a lasting impression on his daughter and she studied at Melbourne University, graduating in 1914 with an M.B. and a B.S. She was appointed resident medical officer at the Melbourne Hospital and in 1915 joined the Children’s Hospital. In 1917 she went to

Inverleigh Exercise Group

Meeting every Thursday at 10am, this Exercise group has been operating for over 5 years under the direction of Staff from Hesse Rural Health.

Commencing originally as a walking group, the need for indoor activity over the winter months saw the group locate in the Presbyterian Church Hall.

Numbers have continually grown and the time has come to relocate to the Inverleigh Public Hall. Led by qualified staff from Hesse Rural Health, and with more space available, comes the challenge of new equipment. Those involved have embraced the change of location and the challenge of heavier weights and now, resistance bands too, leaves all who attend knowing that they have exercised muscles they perhap have not used for a while.

Come along and meet our trainer, Jaxon and see what you can achieve in 30 minutes.

Place: Inverleigh Public Hall Supper Room

Time:Thursdays 10am to 10:30.

Cost: $2 per person.

England and worked with the Royal Army Medical Corps as assistant surgeon at the Endell Street Military Hospital, as she was not permitted to join the Australian Army medical service as a woman.

She returned to Melbourne in 1919 and worked at various hospitals, in many cases in an honorary capacity. Her particular interest was infant health and she was instrumental in setting up early infant welfare centres. She also worked tirelessly to encourage and support expectant mothers to attend pre and antenatal services and extended the care of children to include preschool.

She married a Doctor, Edward Byam Brown in 1926 and he supported her in all her work. She received an O.B.E. in 1938 and is remembered with an annual travelling scholarship, the Vera Scantlebury Brown Child Welfare Memorial Trust as well as for her pioneering work.

I encourage anyone travelling through Linton to take time to view this work of art.

Inverleigh Food Swap

Fresh and Colourful

The Inverleigh Historical Society calendar for May is a colourful representation of the array of produce excess to needs in our community, and all with minimum ‘food miles’.

Inverleigh Food Swap has now been operating on a regular basis for over 6 years. A big thanks to all the keen gardeners that come along to our swaps on the 2nd Saturday of each month at Sonny Wholefood store & Cafe 15a High Street Inverleigh 9.30am to 10am.

The table of swapped produce is regularly overflowing. Items such as fresh, locally grown produce, egg cartons, seeds, seedlings, cuttings, recipes, worm juice, gardening magazines and much more are swapped freely. Personally, I consider the swapping of ideas, tips, tricks and gardening wisdom to be the prized swap. Each month, I feel as though I walk away with something new to try in the garden. After all, gardening is somewhat trial and error, but local knowledge is gold! It's always great to see kids get excited about favourite foods (eating straight off the table) or seeds being swapped, encouraging the next generation of local gardeners within the community!

Thank you to Shaun & Amy at Sonny for hosting our Food Swaps each month. We look forward to seeing more locals at the next swap. Stay for as little or as long as you like. Bring what you can and take what you need. Please come along even if you don't

have anything to swap, sometimes the gardens are quiet and produce less. That's ok. The aim of the Food Swap is to create community connections, healthy lifestyles and a sustainable approach to living, but most of all sharing what we have with others.

Inverleigh Food Swap: 2nd Saturday of each month - 9:30am to 10am at Sonny Wholefood & Cafe 15a High Street Inverleigh.

Golden Pens - Write side up

G’Day from the penners for May 2023, I know I say it every year, but boy! isn’t the year flying by, again. This month’s poem was written by Peter Wilding, a clever little chap who keeps us guessing at our group meetings, one never knows how he will approach the subject at hand, he certainly keeps us on our toes. Hope you enjoy this little ditty from him.

Regards Wendy. goldenpens4@gmail.com

Good Morning or G’day?

When do you say “Good Morning”? And when do you say “G’day”?

It’s hard to tell these days With all the development out our way. You’re walking along and you greet someone In the cheery country way, And they give you this weird look Like they’re thinking “What did he say?”

Further along you see someone else; A townie, so you’d think, A “Good Morning” kind of person, Not one for a nod and a wink. So, you give the formal greeting. But your feelings kind of sink, When you get a “G’day” back from them. Oh dear, what must they think!

Then you see a mate you know well, And you give a hearty sigh. Safe here! I know this fella, He’s definitely a “G’day” guy. You exchange that Aussie greeting, And your feelings soar on high. But he can’t talk – gotta go now! So, you wave a sad goodbye.

POLICE REPORT FOR MAY 2023

Hello all,

I have been on leave for the last two weeks but have now returned and caught a drink driver at excessive speed on my first night back (Anzac day).

Since the last article there have been some minor changes to e scooter laws:

Legal e-scooter use

You can legally ride an e-scooter in Victoria if:

•you ride on shared-use paths (not on footpaths) and roads up to and including 60km/h

•you are at least 16 years old

•you wear a helmet

•you do not travel more than 20km/h

•you do not use your mobile phone

•you do not carry a passenger (dinking).

Legal e-scooter definition

A legal e-scooter is defined as a vehicle designed for use by one person and:

•has a maximum speed capability of 25 kilometres per hour when ridden on level ground

•transports a person while the person is standing

•has 2 wheels (one in front of the other)

•has a footboard between the front and rear wheels

INVERLEIGH RED CROSS NEWS

With your support, Red Cross can be there for people and communities.

In 2022, we made a difference to so many lives. We supported more than 300,000 people before, during and after disasters. This could be through our Register. Find. Reunite service, or our people on the ground during fires and floods. After events we provide Psychological support to people, sometimes for YEARS after a traumatic event. 2019 fires is one example of this, and is still ongoing.

Red Cross provide support for migrants, refugees and people seeking asylum. 47000 plus people received support from 165 countries.

We also don’t forget those that need help to escape domestic violence providing emergency relief payments. As March was Red Cross Calling month, Inverleigh collected $1093.00 at the Bannockburn supermarket where our volunteers sat on several occasions. This money goes towards SO many local community needs.

These monies help with Patient Transport to

•is steered by means of a handlebar

•can be propelled by one or both of the following:

• one or more electric motors

• person pushing one foot against the ground.

An e-scooter that falls outside the scope of this definition is considered an unregistered motor vehicle and is liable to significant penalties. In particular, the e-scooter must not exceed the maximum speed capability of 25 kilometres per hour.

I have also had some complaints of off road motorcycles being ridden by youths in the vicinity of Cleveland Drive and one related to them being ridden at night in the dark.

Off road motorcycles can only be ridden on private property or authorised motorcross tracks only. For a motorcycle to be ridden on the road or on public land (The Common) motorcycles need to be registered and the riders licensed. Heavy fines apply for unlicensed and unregistered.

hospitals and medical appointments, deliver meals to those in need. 180,000 meals were delivered in 2022 alone.

Help is also given to people needing social support. 225,000 hours were given to social support in 2022 and 1300 hours supported in the justice system.

We thank those who help OUR BRANCH with donations. Our money is utilised in an appropriate manner to the needs of so many individuals. We are always on the lookout for new Members. If you think you would like to join our great organization, please contact Heather on 0408 521 090.

16 Leigh News

Autumn has arrived.

With the colder weather arriving and some recent rain the fire restriction period was removed in mid April. This now allows you to burn rubbish and have campfires with out any permits or penalties.

It does not however remove the need for common sense when having a fire, this time of the year can be quite busy for the fire brigade because of escaped burns, unattended, or out of control fires and threatening other assets fires . Nearly all these sort of call outs are because somebody has been careless or not managed the burn properly. Managing a burn is not that hard and at the moment when everything is green the chance of a fire escaping is remote. Never the less, it is wise to monitor the burn to make sure it does what it should be doing.

Simply having a hose nearby or a shovel is usually all it takes and regular checking of it to make sure it is burning properly and maybe push it up a bit so everything burns completely is all that is required. If it is a big burn, then registering it with Fire Victoria is a good idea.

Inverleigh fire brigade is about to commence a Junior programme where we are encouraging children aged between 11 and under 16 with an interest in Fire brigade activities to come along and participate and learn

about the fire brigade and gain skills that will help them become better community members.

The activities will be conducted by trained competent members with working with children accreditation and will cover things like,

•Participate in basic training skills of fire fighting equipment.

•Learn about what the equipment on the trucks is used for.

•Learn about fire safety around the home.

•Learn about what the brigade does, eg fires, first aid.

•Basic fun activities and games with a fire brigade theme.

•Help with certain brigade events.

•And many other interesting and challenging activities.

They will not be allowed to attend fire call outs or participate in any dangerous activities. If you have any children who might be interested in being part of this new programme then we are conducting a sausage sizzle and information night on, Monday 22 May at 5.30 pm at the Fire Station.

The final Budget 2023/24 will be considered for adoption by Council at its meeting in Bannockburn on Tuesday 27 June, 2023.

Along with the preparation and endorsement of the Draft Budget, April was a busy month for myself and my fellow Councillors as we got out and about across the Shire for a number of events including the ANZAC Day services throughout the Shire and the National Volunteers Week celebration.

I was also delighted to attend the unveiling of the 1.75m bronze sculpture

Council is hosting two free community grant writing workshops to assist community members with developing quality project plans and enhancing their chances of preparing successful grant applications.

The workshops will be facilitated by Simon Coutts from Grantus and Council officers who will guide participants on the grant writing process and help community members identify the most suitable grants for their projects. The grant writing workshops will also introduce attendees to

of Linton-born war surgeon and Victoria’s first Director of Infant and Maternal Health, Dr Vera Scantlebury Brown OBE, in Linton.

Unveiled by the Hon Natalie Hutchins MP, Minister for Women, and sculpted by local artist Lucy McEachern, the sculpture is a valuable addition to the historic Linton township and is an important step towards recognising women’s leadership and service across the Shire.

Driven by the community, with support from the Linton and District Historical Society, the artwork is funded by $116,811 from the Victorian Government’s Victorian Women’s Public Art Program with an additional $39,575 (including $9,680 in-kind) contribution from Council.

I would encourage all residents, and visitors to Golden Plains, to visit the impressive sculpture, located in the Avenue of Honour, on their next trip to Linton.

Arthritis and Pets

Arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and progressive degeneration of the joints. Arthritis is very common in both humans and pets, and can be regarded as the same disease. It is important to recognise the signs and symptoms of arthritis as it can be a source of chronic pain that negatively affects your pet's quality of life.

Symptoms of Arthritis May Include:

• Limping/Lameness

• Difficulty rising

• Licking, chewing or biting at joints

• Reluctance to jump or climb stairs

• Inactivity

• Yelping if a joint is bumped or touched

• Swelling of joints

• Loss of stamina or being slower on walks

• Reluctance to groom in cats

• Defecating outside the litter tray

• Difficulty posturing to urinate or defecate, or having accidents in the house

• Loss of muscle mass over the limbs and spine

Arthritis is common in cats and dogs of all sizes, ages and breeds. Many cases go undiagnosed because owners assume that slowing down is just a symptom of ageing. If you suspect your pet may be exhibiting signs of osteoarthritis, it is important to have them evaluated by a veterinarian, our Vets will perform a full physical examination, including palpating your pets’ joints and assessing their range of motion. Our veterinarian may also recommend X-rays of the affected joints, which will help rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms. X-rays can also help us evaluate the degree of damage to the joint.

Although arthritis cannot be cured, there are treatments available that can ease the pain for your pet. Our Vets can recommend treatments and a long-term plan to ensure your pet lives a comfortable life. Different Treatment Options May Include:

• Cartrophen is an injection given at weekly intervals for four weeks. 80% of pets respond to the initial course. The frequency of ongoing treatment varies depending on the severity of arthritic changes.

• Non-steroidal - anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed by our Vets. They work by reducing the inflammation around the joints. Regular check-ups with our Vets and blood tests to monitor your pets liver and kidney function is required while on these medications.

• Joint health supplements or prescription diets that contain Glucosamine, Fish oils or Epitalis. These supplements aid in the protection of joints and can be given on a long-term basis.

There is a new therapy available to help keep your dog and cat comfortable and enjoying a good quality of life. We are very excited to have this product available at the clinic.

32 Leigh News

Beransa and Solensia are an innovative new therapy called a Monoclonal Antibody. It is a biological therapy that works like your dog or cats own immune system. It targets and neutralises a protein that stimulates pain in patients with arthritis.

Through this action, one Beransa or Solensia injection alleviates pain for a full month

Beransa and Solensia can be used with other common therapies (e.g., vaccines, flea and tick products and antibiotics.)

If you would like more information on either of these products call into the clinic a pick up a brochure or talk to one of our Vets at your pet’s next consult.

A Big Welcome and Introducing our new vet, Keeley.

Hi my name is Keeley and I’m new to the Bannockburn Veterinary Team!

I have recently moved down from Queensland so am new to the area. My love for all animals great and small is why I enjoy all aspects of mixed practice.

I also enjoy small animal surgery and am passionate about giving the best animal care possible.

Outside work I enjoy going to the beach, playing netball and hanging out with my pet bearded dragon Mushu.

I look forward to meeting you next time you’re in the clinic.
