PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

WE ARE A LEADER I am proud to present Lenoir Community College’s 2020 Annual Report highlighting our students and our accomplishments for the past academic year. While this year has been challenging in the face of a pandemic, our faculty and staff have risen to the occasion by redesigning the way we deliver education and services to provide the best instruction and opportunities to our students and to the citizens that we serve in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties.

I am privileged to lead an innovative team of faculty and staff who are reimaging the student experience by engaging our students, each other, and our community partners; investing in our students, employees, and facilities and achieving student success by creating a quality experience. This report shares only a few of the thousands of success stories that we are privileged to be a part of every day. Our students are our top priority, and as an institution we strive to offer the best opportunities and services available. We are a leader for economic development in the area providing an educated workforce needed to attract and retain employers in our region. We are preparing the workforce not only for the job market of today, but also for the job market of the future. As a College, we are constantly evaluating and updating our programs and services to stay on the cutting edge of technology and to meet the needs of those we serve. We know that now is the time we are needed most. We recognize and value our community partnerships and we thank you for being an integral partner with us. Your support makes an incredible difference at Lenoir Community College.

FIRST RECIPIENT OF CARS FOR COLLEGE

Pictured left to right are Lenoir Community College President Dr. Rusty Hunt, first Cars for College recipient Devan Shackleford and President/CEO of Harvey Enterprises & Affiliates John McNairy.

It’s not every day that a person can be in the right place at the right time, but for Devan Shackleford of Kinston that’s where he found himself recently. Shackleford became the first recipient of a vehicle awarded through the Lenoir Community College Cars for College program. The Cars for College program was launched after a $250,000 honorarium was gifted by the Z. Smith Reynolds (ZSR) Foundation to commemorate former Trustee John O. McNairy’s 20 years of service to the ZSR Foundation. The program is an economic mobility initiative that secures transportation for students who are enrolled at LCC and earning college credit. The intended outcome is to remove

the mobility barriers that often prevent students from owning and operating a safe and dependable motor vehicle. “I’m just so excited,” Shackleford said. “I never dreamed I would be able to afford a car now. I am so thankful for the Cars for College program and to Mr. (John) McNairy for his contribution to the program and to the College. I am so appreciative of his support to the program and his commitment to education. I’ve had a lot of encouragement along the way to get to this point. Everyone has been so helpful,” he said. “I knew the first time I heard about this program from Dr. Hunt that it was a winner,” said John McNairy, President/CEO of Harvey Enterprises & Affiliates.

After enrolling and attending class, the coronavirus put a halt to continuing in the program for a short time, but in June, he returned to the classroom and to the big rig to successfully complete the driving portion. He hopes to be driving locally. “This is what it is all about, helping someone improve their life and I am so happy that Lenoir Community College could help Devan fulfill his dream of driving a truck,” LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt said. “For him to pass his CDL test and to find out he qualifies for the Cars for College program, we are all so happy that everything came together. It could not have been possible without the generosity of John McNairy and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. The award is making a significant difference to our students and to the communities we serve by assisting those who may not have an opportunity to get an education and training because of transportation and financial barriers. We are appreciative of John and his family’s continuous support of the College and its Foundation and excited about this initiative that will help our students in achieving a more productive future.”

“WE ARE RUNNING APPROXIMATELY 300 OF THESE SHIELDS EVERY 18 HOURS AND ADDITIVE AMERICA IS WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO PRODUCE THESE ITEMS.” Paul Sugg, Eastpointe Prosthetics and Orthotics

A collaboration between Additive America and Lenoir Community College resulted in a generous donation of 1,000 face shields to UNC Lenoir Health Care. The shields are an integral element of personal protective equipment hospital caregivers need to safely take care of COVID-19 patients. UNC Lenoir Health Care said Additive America and LCC are wonderful community supporters and this gift is greatly appreciated. “We are excited to partner with Paul Sugg and Zac Holcomb of Additive America to help produce face shields for use by health professionals,” said LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt. “Matthew Berg, program chair of Mechanical Engineering at LCC, has been working with our partners at Additive America to help develop shields on a larger

scale. This is a true partnership between education and industry to meet a global need.” Sugg who is a graduate of LCC said he was proud to work with the College to help humanity. “We are happy to partner with LCC to pool our resources to make this needed item for our communities,” Sugg said. “Currently, we are running approximately 300 of these shields every 18 hours and Additive America is working around the clock to produce these items. Our manpower is limited but with the help of local community college students, we can reach our goals and help our hospitals along the way.” Sugg said the 3D printed frames will be shipped to Charlotte, where a distributor will get the shields to where they are

The EDA grant, to be matched with more than $5 million in state funding and $115,439 in local investments, is expected to create more than 500 jobs. “We are more than thrilled to have received this grant which will allow us to expand and enhance our health sciences and nursing programs to meet the ever-growing need of health care professionals in our region,” said LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt. “We greatly appreciate the support from our national, state, and local leaders as well as our partners in the health care industry. This is a great day for Lenoir Community College and for the students we serve.” “The healthcare industry is advancing rapidly under the Trump Administration, and we are committed to providing American jobs that support its growth,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “Lenoir Community College’s new facility

THIS TYPE OF DELIVERY WILL CHANGE THE WAY WE DELIVER PROGRAMS IN HIGHER EDUCATION. Dr. Rusty Hunt, LCC President

The College started its fall semester off with a new and exciting option in course delivery – synchronous classes, where students will have the opportunity to come to campus for instruction or they can log on and participate in live lectures from anywhere.

“Faculty will still be teaching in the classroom just like they usually do, while others will be accessing the class remotely,” Dr. Rusty Hunt said. “This type of delivery will change the way we deliver programs in higher education.” Synchronous learning will be for students taking general education courses like English and Psychology.

Hunt said the College’s “smart” classrooms in the Waller Building are complete with smart boards, cameras, high definition sound and microphones, and new black glass boards with neon markers for better visibility on camera. “We are providing the best, quality, synchronous experience for our students. If you want to attend classes online, but miss the live in-class experience, synchronous classes is the best of both worlds.”

EXCELLENCE AWARDS

GOVERNOR ROBERT W. SCOTT LEADERSHIP AWARD NOMINEE Lenoir Community College graduate Hannah Moody of Richlands has been selected the College’s 2020 Governor Robert W. Scott Leadership Award nominee. In 2004, the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents created the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award as a way to recognize student leadership on a statewide level while also honoring the former Governor. This is an award designed to highlight outstanding curriculum student leadership and service. She plans to attend East Carolina University in the fall to major in Speech and Hearing Science and later pursue a Doctorate in Audiology. While at LCC, she served as vice president of the Student Government Association, and as an LCC Ambassador through the College Foundation. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, International Honor Society, she was the Arts and Sciences Division Laptop Scholarship Award recipient. She is a SAT Scholar based on ACT score and has logged more than 100 hours of volunteer service. Moody is president of the Original Free Will Baptist Youth Convention and is a Sunday

School teacher at Whaley’s Chapel OFWB Church, where she is also a praise and worship leader. “My leadership style is the same across the varying positions, where I incorporate all members of the group, act as a role model for others, and I make myself available to serve those around me,” Moody said. “When I began taking up leadership roles, I did not realize how important they would become in shaping who I am today,” she said. “I apply skills that I have learned from one position to the next, and it makes me a better leader, where I am continually learning new things about myself and others. I am incredibly thankful for each role I have served and what I have learned that I can apply to future leadership roles.” Moody said she feels that her most outstanding contribution as a leader is in her role as an advocate for the deaf and hardof-hearing community. “I was born to two deaf adults, making me a CODA or a Child of a Deaf Adult, where I have had to be an interpreter for my parents and had to help them out with things that they did not understand very well,” she said.

“My role as an advocate for the deaf community is the position I have been in for the longest amount of time, which consists of incorporating the deaf community as a whole, being a role model, and being of service to people that cannot hear when they are treated as incompetent. “As an advocate, I promote deaf culture and the importance of American Sign Language to the deaf community,” she said. “Without the culture and the language, the deaf community would not thrive. I love working with the deaf and hard-ofhearing, where they can share their hardships and how things need to be improved, motivating me to push for equality and deaf rights.” Moody said that she is thankful for the opportunities she has had at the College, in the community and in her church. “As a leader and as a person, I put others before myself, where I know that everyone’s needs are being met. I hope that I can encourage others to put aside their fear of taking charge and let them know that their dedication to the position is rewarding and worthwhile.”

DALLAS HERRING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD NOMINEE Lenoir Community College graduate Laci Smith of La Grange was selected as LCC’s 2020 Dallas Herring Achievement Award nominee. The Dallas Herring Achievement Award was established by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, whose philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go” is the guiding principle of the system. The award is given annually to a current or former community college student who

best embodies Dr. Herring’s philosophy. An Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts graduate, Smith’s journey has been challenging. She has experienced homelessness multiple times in the past due to fire and flooding from hurricanes. She has also survived serious medical conditions and years in an abusive relationship. “However, through it all, Laci has been resilient,” said Art Instructor Leigh Ann Parrish in nominating Smith. “In spite of all of her hardships, Laci demonstrates dedication and hard work. FOUNDATION MESSAGE

WE SUPPORT

This has certainly been a year of new challenges and wonderful opportunities for the Lenoir Community College Foundation and our community. Through all the changes, the goal of the Foundation Board remains the same. We continue to secure resources that increase financial assistance to students, improve educational programs, and provide ongoing support to modernize and expand facilities at LCC. For 47 years, students with financial need have been assisted by the Foundation’s scholarship and emergency loan program. Because of the generosity of the faculty, staff, and the community, the Foundation awarded more than $244,178 in scholarships to deserving students and provided more than $38,000 in emergency loans to students experiencing financial difficulties in 2019-2020. The Foundation launched a new program this year to assist low-income working students with transportation needs. Cars for College was made possible after a $250,000 honorarium was gifted by the Z. Smith Reynolds (ZSR) Foundation to commemorate former Trustee John O. McNairy’s 20 years of service to the ZSR Foundation. The goal is to assure students have access to a safe, legal, affordable, and dependable vehicle to get to college and the plan is to provide vehicles for
