Young students are so eager to learn, and a joy to teach. Young Rembrandts instructors provide a nurturing and strong learning environment that expands pre-schoolers image vocabulary as they draw familiar images such as fish, teddy bears, rainbows and cowboys. We will concentrate on the skills of drawing and coloring while we develop fine motor skills, focus, listening, staying on task, patience and spatial organization.

Young Rembrandts elementary age curriculum is designed to teach basic to advanced drawing skills, art techniques and vocabulary. We believe that drawing is the bedrock skill required for future artistic success. We give them skills to express their creativity, and believe that all children can - and should - learn to draw. We provide all materials and teach new lessons each week in a positive and nurturing environment, which brings out the best in each child. You’ll see increased art abilities, learning skills, selfconfidence, and self-esteem.

Updates on Park Improvements

367 Acres of Parkland

Prop 68 Update Parks and Recreation has requested State funding for more than $11 million in projects to benefit Blakely Park, Hale Park and Lodi Lake Park as part of Proposition 68 grant programs. Parks and Rec requested more than $5.4 million to expand the aquatics facilities at Blakely Park, plus construct a parking lot and picnic shelter. The proposed aquatics improvements include a splash pad and new swimming pool designed especially for beginning swimmers. Other proposed features include expanded dressing rooms, new fencing and expanded equipment rooms.

fencing to improve safety for a turfed play area. Improved lighting and security cameras are a part of the more than $4.4 million request. If the grant request is awarded, Parks and Rec will work with the Lodi Historical Society on developing a self-guided tour illustrating the history of Lodi and Hale Park, the city’s oldest park. More than $1 million was requested through another grant program to construct a riverfront trail at Lodi Lake Park, connecting the Nature Area to the boat launch area. This proposed project will allow pedestrians to walk along the riverfront, separated from vehicles. If awarded, Parks and Rec will likely perform the construction at the same time a State-funded erosion-control project is underway, scheduled for early 2021. Our success in securing the grants won’t be known until spring of 2020. If Lodi is awarded any funding, the projects must be completed by early 2022.

Measure L Update Hale Park’s proposed improvements include two new playgrounds, a 35-foot diameter gazebo and surrounding plaza that will serve as a center for community activities. In addition, the grant requests funds placing the overhead power lines underground, improving safety and park aesthetics, and funding for

Parks and Rec has already seen tremendous benefits from the passage of Measure L in November 2018, using the tax proceeds to remove a number of dangerous trees from Lodi Lake Park and to close a funding gap needed to complete the Candy Cane Park renovations.

Several large cottonwood trees and a willow that had previously dropped large limbs were removed from Lodi Lake in the fall. Already nearly half of the $80,000 in Measure L tree maintenance funds was exhausted within the first three months of the fiscal year. With $650,000 earmarked for playground construction in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, Parks and Rec used $100,000 to complete Candy Cane Park. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was on November 16.

The remaining funds are targeting new playgrounds at English Oaks and Beckman parks. The English Oaks playground was designed with community feedback several years ago, with that project awaiting funding. Beckman Park was the subject of recent Parks and Rec outreach, resulting in staff investigating the opportunity for a playground and equipment that will serve the recreational needs of children as well as adults.

The playground at Katzakian Park was also identified as due for replacement in 2020, but that project will likely be deferred due to no or limited funds remaining after the Candy Cane, English Oaks and Beckman projects.

Exciting Next Steps for DeBenedetti Park Back in July 2019, City Council approved the master plan for DeBenedetti Park. Callander Associates Landscape Architecture (CALA) developed the master plan and, with Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) staff, identified the first two project phases of the plan. At the November 20, 2019, meeting, Council approved the hiring of CALA to develop the Phase 1 and Phase 2 construction documents that will be used as the construction plans and specifications for bidding out

this work. The cost for this work is an amount not to exceed $338,480, which includes construction assistance for Phase 1. In conjunction with Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, the Public Works Department has reviewed and approves of CALA’s proposal. Phase 1 consists of a 113-space parking lot off West Century Boulevard with two driveway entrances, planting, irrigation and parking lot lighting, pedestrian walkway access from the parking lot to the bottom of the northwest detention basin, and a prefabricated restroom/concession building with water, sewer and electrical services. Estimated cost for this work is approximately $2.3 million. Phase 2 consists of an approximately 1.5-acre neighborhood park in the northeast corner of the site, including a small play area, drinking fountain, small picnic area, pedestrian walkways, security lighting, planting and

irrigation. Estimated cost for this work is approximately $1.1 million. Park impact fees will be used for this project and are included in the fiscal year 2020 Capital Improvement Program. Depending on the pace of impact fee collection, Phases 1 and 2 could be bid separately or combined into one project. The fiscal impact of this project is described as follows in the staff report to Council: Park impact fees are collected to provide the expanded services associated with the community’s growth. Construction documents are required in advance of spending the fees on growth-related projects. Timing of the actual construction depends upon fee and collection rates. LODI LAKE Lodi Lake Park has a vast selection of activities for all ages. Recreational activities include our 58 acre nature area, Mokelumne River boat tours, picnic rentals, BBQ pits, motorized boat launch, and a playground. At the boathouse you have the opportunity

to rent kayaks, canoes, stand up paddle boards, and pedal boats. Lodi Lake also has a seasonal swimming area with lifeguards on duty to ensure a safe and fun experience.

Lodi Lake Nature Area Needs Docents! Become a tour volunteer, it’s easy! Just follow these 6 steps: 1. Have a desire to share your interest and love for the Nature Area and its unique environment. 2. Fill out a short application (available at PRCS Guest Services, 230 W. Elm St.) 3. Shadow experienced Docents on the trails. 4. Pass a fingerprint and background check (paid for by Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services). 5. Receive a free Docent manual with information on the Nature Area. 6. Lead tours 2 to 3 times per month (fall and spring are the busy times). The best part of becoming a Docent, is that it is not necessary to have a science background. The manual is packed with useful information on all the plants, animals and habitats in the Nature Area!

What Docents Do

Within the 110-acre Lodi Lake Park lies the 58-acre Nature Area. Every year thousands of students and visitors tour the Nature Area with the help of a Lodi Lake Nature Area Docent. The Docents support visitor's experiences by sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm of nature and wildlife. The Docents also use the tour opportunities to encourage students to become better stewards of their environment. Now you can become one of these special, unique individuals! Contact the Docent Coordinator at nsauerland@lodi.gov for more information. City of Lodi Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services
