Famous personalities like Marlon Brando went in and out of Erika Freeman’s home. Some of them became close friends.
ABOUT ERIKA FREEMAN Freeman born as Erika Padan in Vienna in 1927. Her mother Rachel was a Hebrew teacher, her father a foreign minister in the shadow cabinet of the Social Democrats. He was deported to Theresienstadt after the Nazis seized power. In 1940, two years after the Anschluss, Erika was sent alone to the United States, taken in by relatives and continued her schooling there. She wanted to save the world and so she became a psychoanalyst. Celebrities soon occupied the couch in her New York practice, though to this day she never speaks about her clients. Woody Allen, Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe were in her circle of friends. Freeman married the sculptor and painter Paul Freeman, who died at age 50. “A bold move,” she says. She was an advisor to Golda Meir and was also one of the first members of the International Women’s Forum, founded in 1982, one of very few networks of women in top positions. The feminist Betty Friedan was Freeman’s friend and soulmate. To this day, Erika Freeman is committed to promoting and supporting the concerns of women, and is a Board member of the International Women’s Forum Austria.

Erika Freeman is always active, even during the lockdowns. “I’m doing quite well, thank you,” she says. “Look, I live in a nice hotel and I’m always glad to see you! The advantage of lockdowns is that I don’t have to see anyone I don’t want to see.“ Plus, she is “still on duty”. She had a telephone session with a patient, providing therapy across 11
Erika, you brought a book along to our conversation, what is it you’re reading? ERIKA FREEMAN: Clever adages and quotes. Look, I’ll read a few: “Must doing good be painful?” and “When some people try to make life easier, they only make it more complicated” (laughs). That’s what it’s like, isn’t it? Wait, it says: “Life is easier when you don’t try too hard.” I like that one! (Laughs.) But you’re the one who doesn’t make it easy for yourself! You are still a practising therapist, looking after your clients in Vienna and in the USA. Isn’t that rather exhausting? Not at all. Why should I stop counselling people when I know more now than I did before? A life is supposed to have meaning and improve the world, the Jews call this “Tikun Olam” (the repair of the world, from the Hebrew). But I can’t help everyone. Some people just don’t want to be helped (laughs). It is said you advise people not to worry about the future. Is that so?
Worrying doesn’t help, worrying is nonsense. When you worry, you expect something bad and that makes everything worse. Worrying is bad and will remain bad. It always pays to think about the future and to have a vision. Worrying does not make you smarter, it only makes you anxious. Positive thinking, however, will help you. Worrying is like a closed door that can never be opened. You know, there are people who say, “You don’t understand anything because you don’t worry!” But no! It’s the other way ’round! It’s much better not to worry. Worrying robs you of your intelligence and sours your future. It actually makes you stupid! Were you never worried, even when you were torn away from your sheltered childhood in Vienna? You were twelve years old when you waved goodbye to your mother at the Westbahnhof … No, because I didn’t know what to worry about. I only thought about tomorrow: “What will tomorrow bring and what can I do? I already knew what the Nazis would do. That wasn’t worry, that was a given. I thought about how to solve this problem. When I said goodbye to my mum, the thought crossed my mind that I might never be happy again. So I closed that door. You actually wanted to go to Palestine, but there was no name

the continents. In the afternoon, another patient – in New York – is expecting her call. The work keeps her young and the past months have not changed her: “I’m vaccinated, I’m not afraid of Covid. Fear makes you stupid.”

on your exit permit. Then you travelled to the USA in a roundabout way … I never really wanted to go there and they didn’t want me there, either (smiles). The relatives who took me in didn’t know what to do with me. I studied English every day at home, just sat with my books open when my relatives wanted me to go out and play with the children in the street. Can you imagine? I was a well-behaved girl from Vienna – you didn’t meet boys out in the street to play! Why should I have gone out on the street in New York? My mum would not have approved. I always wanted to be good to please her (points up). I was an independent child, even when I was still in Vienna. My mother went to the emigration office every evening to get a number, at night I was often alone because she had to wait in line for a long time. A woman once asked her: “How is your child? Does she cry a lot?” And my mother said, “She behaves well, she reads and she falls asleep alone.” I was a good child, I’m grateful for that, because she had a hard enough time. When I was on a train and then on a ship to America, I didn’t know that I would never see her again. Your mother, who survived denunciation, concentration camps and years of living underground in Vienna, died in the bombing of the Philipphof on Albertinaplatz in the last weeks of
the war. Do you think of her often? Every day. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her: my mum is always with me. She was an extraordinary woman – the first Hebrew teacher in Western Europe. She could be assertive, was very independent and studied Hebrew, which was unimaginable at that time. My grandmother was also extraordinary. You know, grandmothers are the most important people for a child! Why is that? Because they are love. Grandmothers are pure love. Children feel that very strongly. The mother has to keep everything going, she organizes and does things and makes things happen. The grandmother only has to love. You have experienced so much hardship and yet you have always remained positive. Does your faith help you? Look, even if no one else loves you, the good Lord does. I’m a religious person – my father wasn’t, but my mother was, she ran a kosher household. She once came home with a few pieces of salami and said to me, “Taste it, it’s kosher!” And I thought to myself, if this religious person wants to tell me a lie and say that salami is kosher, then I’ll eat it just to please her. The Lord God forgives and He is there, just like tomorrow is always tomorrow. And if you can’t always see the Lord, then have a little patience. He is patient with us. That’s a “mutual agreement” and quite practical! (Laughs.)

A lonely sailor. The Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel returns to the Wiener Staatsoper as the Dutchman. This notoriously desperate villain is unforgettable and this is one of Sir Terfel’s best roles.
A RATHER PASSIONATE
His eyes sparkle, especially when he talks about his family. During the corona pandemic, his fifth child, Alffi Bryn, was born. He has three boys from his first marriage and two little ones with his current wife, Hannah. They live in Penarth, a stone’s throw from the sea and not far from the Welsh capital of Cardiff. Both parents as well as his grandparents and greatgrandparents sang in the church choir. Apparently the whole family is rather musical. He himself started singing very early on and took part in local competitions at the age of three – like “the Eisteddfod”.The beginning of an outstanding international career for the likeable singer. He has already been awarded several titles by the Queen and can call himself “Sir”, an honor he humbly accepts on behalf of his family and friends. Earlier roles at the Wiener Staatsoper included Figaro and Leporello. Jochanaan – after his sensational Salzburg debut – and Falstaff were always his Staatsoper favorites and then he gave memorable performances as Scarpia in “Tosca” and Dulcamara in “Liebestrank”. Now he returns to the house on the Ring as the Dutchman himself. Whom do you prefer, Mozart or Wagner? SIR BRYN TERFEL: Early on, Mozart was my go-to, but I outgrew those roles. Today I love Wagner more.

BAD BOY
Schubert. Favorites come and go, but Verdi’s Falstaff is still up there. Do you tend to gravitate toward villain roles? I am attracted to the bad boy repertoire. But who doesn’t like playing the villain?
REPRISE
The story of the Flying Dutchman can be traced back to motifs from age-old sailor’s tales which can be heard all over the world, such as the ship of the dead, the ghost ship or the ship from hell. The core motif each time is the curse of eternal sailing for a captain who has done bad things … DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER (THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) by Richard Wagner, in the Wiener Staatsoper, started on November 17th. Conductor: Bertrand de Billy. Direction: Christine Mielitz. With Anja Kampe (Senta) and Bryn Terfel (Dutchman). wiener-staatsoper.at
Why do you sing so rarely in Vienna? Vienna was undoubtedly the place where I had some of my most cherished musical experiences – the Brahms Requiem at the Musikverein under Claudio Abbado and Don Giovanni with Riccardo Muti at the Staatsoper, to name a few. If I could, I would live in Vienna and perform every week. So I guess I wouldn’t put it that way. It has more to do with my schedule, which sets the pace.
You are now performing the role of the Dutchman at the Wiener Staatsoper, is it a difficult role?
The Dutchman? In a word: intense. What role would you like to perform in the near future? Dilemma. One day a new engagement might come along, a project that interests me a lot, or maybe I should just check out Hindemith’s Cardillac or Berg’s Wozzeck. Something I can really dig into. No rest for the wicked! When will you perform in Vienna again? As luck would have it, I’ll be back in 2022 with Jonas Kaufmann, Lise Davidsen and conductor Simone Young in Peter Grimes.
Which music do you listen to at home to relax? At home, poor Alexa must be confused. From Tom Jones to Michael Bublé to Franco Corelli, from Shirley Bassey to Cecilia Bartoli and Beyoncé. But when I can steal a moment for myself in my studio, Bach and Beethoven rule my world.

You’re well known over the world, beautiful, talented, a successful business lady and look half your age. You are definitely an international role model for millions of women all over the world. What is your secret of your magical appearance? Is there a little formula for that? MAYE MUSK: My secret formula is eating well. As I’ve said in my book, I follow a flexitarian diet. Research work shows that this is beneficial for a healthy weight and to reduce the risk for chronic diseases. If you fall ill, you would have very little energy and definitely not a magical appearance. Also, for public events, I have a stylist, hair and make-up artists who make me look fabulous. I am so happy Benevento books published my book in Austria as there are many more details in the beauty segment. You’ve already been a model with 15 years. Today your success is at its peak. How do you explain this? My success is at its peak because I have a great agent at CAA Fashion, and use social media to show that women of all ages can be relevant, intelligent, successful and stylish. It’s about time! Did you ever believe, you will inspire so many women with your style and attitude? If yes, why? If no, why not? I have always inspired women to eat well to stay in good health, because I am a dietitian. Now with social media, and my glam team, women are inspired to do their best to look stylish and confident. I think that’s fabulous! At the same time you’ve definitely noticed women putting themselves under pressure to look “perfect”. Some of them are addicted to Botox at a very young age. How can we detach ourselves from this beauty ideal and find our way back to individuality? Women should be able to do whatever they like with their appearance. As a nutrition scientist, there is no need to hide wrinkles because people respect you for your intelligence and research knowledge. Now in my seventies I am booked because I have wrinkles and can frown, so I don’t have any pressure to look younger. Of course we’ve all read your touching book. Life isn’t always a bed of roses. You have given us honest and deep insights from your marriage. Abuse in marriage is still a strong issue nowadays. Probably, when it happened to you nobody dared to talk about it. Could you confide in someone? WELCOME VIENNA

I SHOW THAT WOMEN OF ALL AGES CAN BE RELEVANT, INTELLIGENT, SUCCESSFUL AND STYLISH.
Duckie Thot, Maye Musk and Parris Goebel – UGG celebrates its autumn/winter 2021 apparel campaign.
When I was in an abusive marriage, I was shocked that a man could hit a woman. I didn’t want to tell anyone. When my brothers and twin sister read my book, they asked why I didn’t confide in them. I think women need to confide in their family and friends so they can leave a bad situation quicker than I did. You pulled the plug and have raised your three children on your own. A bold decision. What gave you the strength and courage for this step? To run away with three children and no income, you have to be desperate, not bold. I had had enough of living in misery and being bullied, insulted and screamed at every day. It was really hard because you have no confidence and you are scared, but it is still better than living with an abusive partner. How did you manage that? Which obstacles did you have to overcome? The main obstacles I had to overcome were financial. Fortunately the public schools were very inexpensive and I could afford secondhand school uniforms and books.
MY CHILDREN SAW HOW HARD I WORKED ALL THE TIME. women struggle to bring motherhood and their career under one roof. They expect to be perfect in both roles. Do you have any piece of advice? When your children are very small, you cannot be highly successful otherwise you’ll never see them. As a dietitian, I worked from home and would only see nutrition clients when I had someone to watch my children in the afternoon. Over time, my children spent a lot of time at school, that freed up my time to increase my practice. I saw clients at my dining room table or converted a bedroom into an office. Being able to work from home was a big advantage.
As a single mother, you even set up your own business. Lot of WELCOME VIENNA

What would you say makes a good father and husband? My father, brothers, sons and nephews are good fathers and husbands. Being kind and considerate is good.
Maye Musk helps students at Eucalyptus Elementary School learn to plant a vegetable garden in preparation for Plant a Seed Day in Hawthorne, California.
You shape the image: We do not necessarily need a man by our side to become successful and happy. Isn’t that insight a valuable step forward? It would have been nice to have a man by my side, but I was not lucky that way. Men were not supportive of my work and the time I spent with my children. Other women are more successful than me. Lucky them. You have two master degrees. As a science nutritionist, is there an overall formula how to get a lean, healthy and fit body. (Vegetarian, vegan or still meat? Carbohydrates yes, or no?) I eat a high carbohydrate diet, with low-fat dairy, plenty of
fruit and vegetables and whole grains, as described in my book. That is my formula that works best for me. How do you resist culinary temptations? The Christmas season is about to begin, there are treats everywhere you look. It is hard to resist temptation. I have to be very careful. I am not a naturally lean person so I have to plan my meals every day and every hour. With the holiday season, I will be very careful, but may gain 1 kg. I will then lose it immediately after the holidays. I control my weight very carefully so I can fit into my clothes. It is expensive to go up a size, and also makes us unhappy. You have a lot of grandchildren. What kind of grandma are you? As my daughter has twins with a sperm donor, I lived with her for the first eight months and helped her with the babies. Just FYI, that’s more than many men do. I also took them to school when she had to direct a Passionflix movie at 5 a.m. When all the 12 grandchildren get together, I am very happy just to see how nicely they play. What does happiness mean to you? Happiness means my children and grandchildren are in good health and enjoying their lives. Looking back, which age was the best and why? Now is the best age because I have learned to avoid nasty people and to say no to something I don’t want to do. If you had come to the “Women of the Year” gala in Vienna, what would you have done first? I would’ve come in a day early and spent that time sightseeing beautiful Vienna. I enjoy learning about different cities and cultures. What does this award mean to you? This award is very special, because it acknowledges that a divorced mother and successful entrepreneur in her seventies can be appreciated and honored.

That is why the Austrian is happy and frank, bears his faults, openly bears his joys, does not envy, prefers to be envied! And what he does is done with cheerful courage. It is possible that in Saxony and around the Rhine there may be those who read more books; but what is necessary and what pleases God, the clear view, the open, right mind, the Austrian steps before everyone, draws inward and lets others speak! It is these lines from the historical drama “König Ottokars Glück und Ende” (King Ottokar, his rise and fall), delivered by the envoy Ottokar von Hornek in act 3, that establish Franz Grillparzer’s dubious posthumous career as Austria’s national poet. And this despite the fact that in 1825, the year of publication, Austria was still very much a world power and the dramatic work was held back in the royal censorship office for two years before the Empress personally intervened and ordered it published. Since then, Grillparzer’s “Loblied auf Österreich” (Song of Praise to Austria) has been dusted off and paraded whenever our nation was “spat upon” or reviled by foreign countries – cue the Waldheim sanctions. Whereby it is of course more than questionable why one should be proud of being less educated (there may be those who read more books) or silent (looks inward and lets others speak). But is the poet himself, who was born in Vienna in 1791 and died here in 1872, really to blame? And so the Burgtheater reopened after the Nazi occupation with Grillparzer’s “König Ottokars Glück und Ende”. Grillparzer’s outstanding feature is precisely his contradictory life, which lasted quite long for his time. Although he started as a civil servant, then became court councillor, he flirted with revolutionary ideas. He wrote a poem in praise of Radetzky (“Glück auf, mein Feldherr, führe den Streich!”) (Godspeed, my comrade, lead the charge!) and admired the humanism of the Antiquity; in 1843 he travelled to Athens and Constantinople. In addition, there were private tragedies. His pining for Katharina Fröhlich – to whom he never proposed because he allegedly lacked the courage – is legendary. And after the sensational success of his first tragedy, “Die Ahnfrau” (The Ancestress), an uphill, downhill run ensued for his next dramatic works. In addition, there were battles with powerful censors and with the Imperial court.Yet other peers had experienced such setbacks as well; very few poets are immediately successful. Grillparzer, though, virtually withdrew into private poetry in 1848 (of all times!) after his comedy “Weh dem, der lügt!” (Woe to him who lies) failed miserably at the Burgtheater. Typically Austrian? Sulking as a national disease? Who would admit to such characterizations? The fact is that Grillparzer’s plays are still widely

performed today and certainly not only because Austrian theaters have an educational mandate to fulfil – it has long been impossible to release a playbill solely aimed at secondary school classes. Currently, for example, there is a very appealing production at the Theater an der Josefstadt directed by Elmar Goerden, with Sandra Cervik in the title role. Set in modern times without compromising Grillparzer’s writing and featuring a final surprise: suddenly everyone ends up as one big, happy family. Grillparzer’s extensive oeuvre revolves around themes that still need to be discussed today – in Medea, for example, it’s xenophobia, and Ottokar is about the hubris of those in power. It is also worth noting that young Franz was certainly not born into a career as a poet. “I was born in Vienna on the 15th of January, 1791. My father was a lawyer, quite strict, a man who took his own counsel. Since his career and his natural reticence did not allow for much time spent with his children, since he died before I was eighteen years old, and since in the last years of his life illness, the terrible years of the war and the deterioration of his domestic circumstances brought about by both only increased this reticence, I cannot give an account to myself or others of the inner workings of his character. His outward manner was somewhat cold and brusque, he avoided all company, yet he was a passionate friend of nature. He used to cultivate his own garden, later rented a larger plot and grew flowers of all kinds, which was practically his only source of amusement. Only on walks, during which, across incredible distances, he sometimes took the whole family, but often only me, still a child, did he become joyful and communicative,” wrote Grillparzer in his “autobiography”, published in an almanac. Not a very joyful family – both a younger brother of Grillparzer’s and his mother took their own lives. Grillparzer’s encounter with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German prince poet, is legendary. He was dining at a separate table with others, and when Goethe invited him for a private conversation, he simply walked away – out of fear, or stubbornness? Either way, he simply left. In Vienna, Grillparzer is of course commemorated in the Burgtheater not only with the performance of his plays, but also with a bust on its façade. A pompous monument is also erected in the Volksgarten. The most important reminder of Grillparzer, however, is the Literature Museum of the Austrian National Library, which is housed in the so-called Grillparzerhaus: here – in the former Imperial Archives – the Viennese dramatist held sway as Director of the Archive until 1856. His original study has been preserved to this day and provides an insight into the everyday life of the imperial and royal official who was such a gifted writer. onb.ac.at/museen/literaturmuseum 25

Julia Koci patiently poses for the photographer on the partly-assembled set. She is actually rather reserved, she says, but as a professional she knows what is expected of her. Born in Vienna but raised on Long Island and in New York City, an English accent sometimes comes through in this casual conversation in the canteen. Early talent. Her grandfather – from Prague – was a pianist, her maternal grandfather a Viennese singer. Her mother worked as a designer and listened to opera at home. “She brought opera into the house, and I used to sing for her,” recalls Koci, who started ballet at the age of five. She was six when she first appeared on stage in Swan Lake. Her first musical was The Wizard of Oz. She wanted to do musicals, but her teacher thought her voice was “so classical”. How did you get into musicals? JULIA KOCI: In America, it’s common for children to do musicals at school. I was in a musical class, but I later studied classical singing. After I graduated at 26, I also thought I would never do musicals again, but stick with early music, opera and concerts. As life will have it, though, along came “Hello Dolly” at the Volksoper in 2010. WELCOME VIENNA

What role does the musical play in your repertoire? Having been engaged at this house for a long time, operetta and musicals already play a major role. I only perform one or two opera roles a year. Which do you prefer: singing, dancing or acting? I can’t really say. In musicals and operettas, everything is equally important. Singing is still the easiest part for me. How do you prepare yourself for your roles? First I read through the score and the story and try to grasp the character in historical context. Then I sit at the piano and play through every note. Text and language have to become fluent. I do struggle more with spoken text pieces like this, it really takes a lot of time; I memorize texts much easier with music. What do you like about the musical “Lady in the Dark”? First and foremost Kurt Weill’s music. When he arrived in New York, his music changed a lot, influenced by Gershwin and jazz elements. The music in this piece is absolutely top notch, incredibly great. And each character plays differently when they appear in
Likes versatility. Julia Koci is an ensemble member at the Volksoper Wien and can really let off steam in musicals and operettas through dance and acting elements between the numerous text passages.
the dreams. Everyone plays different roles, which is exciting and challenging for the whole ensemble. What attracts you to the character Liza Elliott? This woman has an insane number of facets. The play has no buffo couple, just Liza and three men. She’s up and down. She asks herself about the meaning of life and which desires she has not yet fulfilled. Not only is she an executive in a newsroom, but she has doubts about everything right now. On the one hand there’s the desperate, angry, in love, super strong and glamorous Eliza, on the other she can be disarmingly fragile. Your repertoire is very diverse, from early music to contemporary. Isn’t that exhausting? The most important thing is to keep boundaries; I wouldn’t sing a Verdi opera straight after a musical performance. My voice has to bend differently there. But with good support, healthy singing is possible

in any genre. Wouldn’t it be easier to have a career in just one genre? I never sang to have a career, to become a star. I wanted to make music and to be on stage. Whenever I enjoyed something, I took it on; versatility is exciting for me. For a while I only did opera, but I got really out of shape. What are the biggest challenges in your profession? plenty of time for yourself, no matter what. It’s not a job where you can switch off completely. Sometimes I think to myself that it’s so nice, because I get to take my profession home with me. When I ride the underground, I go through the texts and think about what I could have done better in individual scenes. I also wake up suddenly in the night sometimes. What do you enjoy most? Risk is always exciting. It’s never the same. It gives you a huge adrenaline rush. And the people you meet in the theatre, you get to know the world that way. That’s a truly beautiful thing! How do you keep fit? I’ve practiced yoga since I was sixteen. I do it online three, four times a week. And hiking – that’s the best. I love the outdoors! Who would you like to spend an evening with? With Prince and Mozart, we would definitely have a ball (laughs).
FEAR WAS ALWAYS UPON US Nadia Ghulam slipped into the identity of her deceased brother at the time of the Taliban’s first regime in order to survive and provide for her family. In “The Secret of My Turban” she tells her true story. T

Why did you dress up as a boy? NADIA GHULAM: When I was eight years old, a bomb hit our house directly. They destroyed not only my school and my house, but my whole childhood and youth. I was in a coma for six months and spent two years in various hospitals. When the Taliban came to power in 1994, they didn’t allow women to go to school or work. It was war and I started dressing like my brother. I thought of it as a solution for one day and tomorrow things will change, tomorrow I will be Nadia again and go on with my life. That dream dragged on for ten years. For ten long years I played the man of the house, I was my mother’s son and I had to work for my family and raise my sisters. When I came to Spain in men’s clothes, I was 21 years old. What were your worst experiences from that time? When I was no longer allowed to go to school. That was the most difficult moment for me, and I said to my mother, “Please pray that I have an accident and die.” My mother asked, “Why do you want to die because you are

not allowed to go to school? I wasn’t allowed to go to school either and I didn’t want to die right away just because of that.” And I said, “No, I don’t want to be like you, mother. I want an education.” What is the relationship with your mother like? In the beginning it was very difficult for my mother to call me by my brother’s name. I had to remind her how dangerous it would be if she called me Nadia. One night I watched her at prayer, always repeating my brother’s name instead of Allah. “I am practising your name,” she said. To this day, she calls me Zelmai. Emotionally, it must have been very difficult to hide your true identity, especially during puberty? Yes, it was difficult, especially because I had to keep my feelings to myself. I couldn’t tell anyone when I fell in love, for example. If I had a feeling, I had to hide it completely. In my teenage years I suffered a lot and prayed to God: “Help me not to love”.
Do you remember any positive experiences from this time? I learned to understand Afghan men. I know their lives are far from easy. Many of them are suffering because of the war, each in their own way. Being on the street and working with them, I learned how hard life is for them, too. Was it difficult to become Nadia again? In Barcelona, at first I didn’t want to be a woman because I wanted to drive a car and ride a bike, have friends and

There is a special word in the local language for girls who dress as boys: “bacha posh”. Boys in Afghanistan simply have a higher value. For example, a boy is allowed to grow up like a normal child. For Nadia Ghulam, her disguise was a matter of survival. In her book, she not only draws an historically accurate picture of the social realities in a perennially occupied country, but also formulates a plea against the oppression of women. Today she lives in Barcelona as a social pedagogue and activist, works with refugees and migrants and wants to give “people a voice who have none”.

the last 20 years. Only 5 million people live in Kabul, the rest of the country is extremely poor and there are hardly any schools. Young people have no choice but to join the Taliban – which is a purely military organization. This saddens me, because these boys should have a pen and paper in their hands instead of a weapon. Some things have changed for just 20 percent of the population, the rest suffer even more than before.

just be alone. When I was alone for the first time, I realized that as a woman I can do anything I want, so I didn’t have to hide my identity anymore. I swim and laugh. And people don’t know how happy I feel to have regained my freedom! Is life in Afghanistan still difficult? Unfortunately, nothing has changed for the majority in
Can you imagine returning to Afghanistan? It is my dream! I have to return to Afghanistan because my country needs people with knowledge and education. I know what is happening in my country, what I needed when I was there, how I suffered. So I can help many people in my country, but going there as Nadia would be very dangerous for me. You have experienced so much pain. Do you have a creed that you live by? I have three that are very important to me: my love for my mother, who was the only one who believed in my survival, my education and my faith, which has always helped me in difficult situations.

frustrating, especially when you’re young and impatient,” Wassef recalls. She doesn’t think it was more difficult just because there were three women involved in the project. “If you decide to make your gender an issue, it will become one.” To this day, Wassef stays in touch with her clients, who ask her for book recommendations. “These relationships with people that Diwan has created keep us all together. They help us find community, even when times are difficult.” Meanwhile, Nadia Wassef has retired from operations and is starting her new adventure as an author in London. “At a certain point, I thought of Diwan as a person with her own personality and she wouldn’t like the expansion we wanted. Sometimes people have to divorce in order to have a good relationship. And that’s what Diwan and I needed. My mistake was that I tried to impose what I wanted to happen. And that just didn’t work.” She still distributes and ships books she loves. “I will always be an advocate for books and bookshops. In every challenge in
my life, a book has helped me and I want to share that with others.” Emotional entanglements. In her book, she wanted to tell the story of Diwan, not without first getting the consent of her sister Hind. She threw away the first version, and took a whole year to craft the second. She first had to come to understand her relationship with Cairo, with Diwan and with the people involved, in order to be able to formulate something in peace. “The secret is to keep going,” she notes. The book also tells about the need to know oneself, to be and do what one wants. “I am very happy that my book is now being published in German and translated into other languages, because I want to present other characters and personalities from Egypt beyond the usual stereotypes. There are so many Egyptian women who won’t wear a veil and who live their lives with increasing self-determination. I hope this book clears up some misconceptions,” she muses. As an entrepreneur, she has not been discouraged and has won several awards for her efforts. Rankings mean nothing to her, but “a lot to other people. My daughters are proud of me and have hung the poster in the kitchen. I wasn’t that happy to be on the Forbes list. It’s also kind of a curse because there’s strength associated with it. But when they see me with my daughters, you immediately realize that I hold no authority over them,” she laughs. For Nadia Wassef, impatience is one of the biggest problems of our time. We look at the last five years, 20 years - it’s nothing. Whatever it is, we want it now. That’s not how political change works, it happens very slowly. In the case of Egypt, we are looking back at 7,000 years of history. Change comes when the time is ripe, not according to a schedule, you can’t force it. Everywhere in the world it’s always about process; if we want to influence how things happen then we only need to study history. She could definitely imagine living back in her home country of Egypt. She never says never to anything. She advises young people to have a dream, but “be aware that it also has a price, and that you probably won’t get it right the first or second times around.” At the end of our interview, Nadia Wassef waxes philosophical: “You should listen to what the world wants to tell you. I never did that in my younger days. Today I listen to the world and it has changed a lot for me. It whispers, and sometimes you don’t hear it, especially if you are too noisy yourself. And I used to make a lot of noise!”

ETERNAL BEAUTY
Dear Eva, natural authenticity is particularly important to you, how do you manage to preserve it in aesthetic medicine? DR. EVA WEGROSTEK: You just have to get it right! Most people think it’s the skin’s fault when everything starts to sag, but it’s actually due to the supporting fat deposits just beneath the surface. In young people, these are ample, but they diminish more and more as one grows older. With the help of hyaluron, contours can be lifted again. My goal is to restore the face, not to remodel it – that’s always been most important to me. How long does that last? My philosophy is:You are as young and beautiful as long as your skin tissues stay healthy! Everything you add, whether hyaluron or threads – if the skin is strong and active, it will be processed. But if I have skin that is flabby and inactive from daily solarium visits, creams are not absorbed and you can inject whatever you want, but it won’t help. That’s why I don’t inject

anything into skin that I already know won’t respond favorably. These days you hear people say: “The sooner you start Botox injections, the less the muscles slacken.” Can you support this view? Absolutely, but the process is different for everyone. Some people use a lot of facial expressions or are very athletic, and their neck muscles, the platysma, tend to be pronounced, which can quickly lead to wrinkles. However, if injected with Botox from the age of 30, the neck remains smooth and contour is maintained, which is the most important thing for a youthful appearance: it’s always about the edges, i.e. the transition from the chin to the neck! So you’re a Botox advocate? Definitely, I’ve been using it myself for decades, you just have to know how to apply it properly. You have to know where the muscles run, how deep you have to inject, what distribution radius you have; it really must be applied in a targeted way.

Can wrinkles on the upper lip also be removed with Botox? As soon as you notice a wrinkle on the upper lip, it should be treated immediately because it becomes more and more difficult later on. That’s why I love Botox, even for younger people, because there is nothing wrong with taking precautions with their lips. But if the wrinkles are already there, you really have to know exactly when and where to do what. If the skin is still soft, you can try a gentle injection, but if it’s already too firm, you have to work with your own blood. This is injected

Is there any kind of minimum duration after such a laser treatment? It varies. If someone lives healthily, avoids direct sunlight, doesn’t smoke, applies facial masks every day and eats a balanced diet, the treatment will probably last 10 years. If you have genetically poor skin, smoke and don’t take care of your skin, wrinkles will return sooner – it’s all about proper maintenance! You have your own product line … Absolutely, that’s why we even train our clients on how best to use my products. I don’t want any application mistakes and I speak personally with my clients directly. About cost: Is it affordable at all to stay young? Certainly! If I check my skin early enough and find out how to avoid wrinkles, I can maintain a steady condition for a long time and get away with minor repairs. Just keep getting individual advice early enough, because everyone’s skin is different. Where would you say the trend is headed? Exactly in the direction that I practice: noninvasive and preventive – away from this American splash-up.
into the tissue so that new fibres can form – and then the skin becomes beautiful again. In winter you treated your face with a CO2 laser and posted the often frightening photos on Facebook. Why do you do this? Because I try out everything on myself before recommending treatments to my patients! And if you are not 20 anymore and want to improve naturally, then this is a pretty good method. Hundreds of microscopic holes are burned into the skin with the laser, thus stimulating the body’s own repair. On the one hand you have the “shrinking” of the tissue from the heat and on the other hand you activate the self-healing powers of the skin, which is healthy around the punctures. Everything heals up within 14 days. Afterwards, the skin is taut and soft as a baby’s bottom. The effect lasts for over a year, it gets better every month and you can see how the WELCOME VIENNA
Is beauty medicine still a taboo subject in Austria? Absolutely. I have patients who have been doing it for 20 years and their husbands know nothing about it. It’s not about staying young forever, it’s about looking good for your age: That is the calling card – it’s all about an entitlement to stay beautiful! You should be able to look in the mirror in the morning and say: “Well done”. How do you personally keep yourself so attractive and outwardly young-seeming? I move a lot, I ride, I do yoga and I also pay close attention to my diet, because nothing comes from nothing. In addition, I am an incredibly positive person and a fan of everyday happiness. There are always small pleasures to enjoy. And I have just as much fun here at the clinic as I do in my free time. Your hopes for the future? Staying fit and healthy, being able to ride and being able to eventually hand over my life’s work to my daughter, who will continue fabulously! 51

The healthy spinach dumplings are also a real treat for the palate, with cheese and herbs providing the flavorful notes.
In addition to the Heuriger, the Vinothek also offers tastings and bottled wine sales with products from the diverse wine landscape of Vienna and the surrounding area.
Heuriger delicacies, a glass of wine in a cosy atmosphere – the Viennese Heuriger has long been a cultural institution and also an intangible UNESCO World Heritage Site. There were already vineyards at Schönbrunn Palace under Maria Theresa, and today they are tended by the “WienWein” group. So what could be more obvious than to unite two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in one place, thought SHI Group managing director and “Joseph II” operator Josip Susnjara, and opened a Heuriger in the newly renovated premises of the “Kontrollorstöckl”. “I myself love the authentic Viennese Heurigen culture. With a partly modern interpretation of the cuisine, Joseph II carries over the traditional Heurigen experience to today and would like to whet the appetite of Viennese people in particular for the culinary tradition of their federal capital,“ says Susnjara. The restaurant is named after Emperor Joseph II, who laid the foundation for the flourishing Heurigen culture. With an exciting fusion of elegant “Schönbrunn yellow” and cosy “Heurigen green”, the Heuriger Joseph II, set between the Orangerie and the main building makes you want to stop in. A cross-section of seasonal wines is served daily from 10 a.m. to midnight in the two dining rooms. Two courtyards offer enough places for 80 visitors, and up to 100 hungry guests can be catered for indoors. Joseph II’s passion project is to provide

The offer includes all Viennese vintners, first and foremost the “WienWein” group. In addition to the varied regular assortment, there are seasonally changing surprises on the wine list. “Joseph II unites Vienna’s diverse wine-growing regions in one central location, this Heurigen experience is intended to bring our guests closer to the quintessential Viennese wine culture,” says Köberl. Guests are treated to culinary classics and modern interpretations by the three chefs Thomas Wieland, Horst Hergesell and Tristan Kalb. The menu includes Viennese escargots as well as the Heurigen platter. “There is nothing better than bringing a smile to a diner’s face with good food and good wine,” emphasises Yannic Fabi, who is responsible for the overall gastronomic management of SHI gastronomy on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. Although the new Heuriger just opened this fall, there are already loyal regulars who enjoy sampling regional delicacies. Joseph II is a little piece of Heurigen culture in the middle of Schönbrunn’s cultural heritage that will delight locals and tourists alike.

A TASTE OF LIFE
Anna Netrebko delights the whole world on the great opera stages. At home, she delights family and friends with delicious dishes, because she loves to cook. In her new book, she includes stories about her childhood, youth and career with each recipe. “I come from Krasnodar. It used to be a small city, but now it is growing rapidly. Though not especially attractive, it is known as the ‘Pearl of Russia’. It’s not my favorite city, but it is my home. It’s where my roots are and where I go to recharge from time to time. We have a small house with a yard in the center. We grow tomatoes and other vegetables in the garden – some may call it a ‘city villa’ – along with fruit trees and excellent grapes (my father always made wonderful wine). In our house, at the Netrebkos, wine was our drink of choice, not vodka. The house was always full of people and my mother cooked for them, that was the family tradition. There was a fire pit in the yard that we jumped over and roasted potatoes in,” writes Anna Netrebko at the very beginning of her book, which – in addition to great cooking and stage photos – documents her childhood and youth. A childhood dream. At the age of seven, Anna was already singing in the Young Pioneers’ Choir and three years later she celebrated her first solo performance in the Krasnodar concert hall. “I sang Russian songs, wore a pretty dress and the audience applauded enthusiastically. It was a lot of fun – and I’ve been on stage ever since.” The world of the stage became her lifeblood. Her parents supported their ambitious daughter from the start. At

RED BEET “CAVIAR” – A LONG LOST RECIPE ACCORDING TO MY MUM INGREDIENTS FOR 4 PEOPLE approx. 400 g beetroot, salt, sugar, 1 dash cider vinegar, 1 red onion, 1 clove garlic, 3–4 tbsp. rapeseed oil, 1 / 2 tube tomato paste, pepper Cook the beetroot in their skins in a pot with 1 tsp. each salt and sugar and vinegar until soft. This takes about 20 minutes or longer, depending on the amount. Strain the beetroot and leave to cool slightly. Peel the cooled beetroot and slice not too finely. Beetroot makes the hands red! But it doesn’t matter if you forget to wear disposable gloves (it happens to me too). The red color can easily be washed off with soap. Peel the onion and chop it very finely. Peel and chop a garlic clove. Fry the onion in rapeseed oil in a pan. Add the beetroot and continue to fry. Season with salt, 1 pinch of sugar and the tomato paste, add a little water if necessary. Let everything boil down slightly until the beetroot take on a caviar-like consistency. Remove from heat, season with garlic, salt and pepper. The beetroot “caviar” is served cold and is an excellent accompaniment to all Russian dishes and, of course, anything else.

16, she began her training at the Rimsky-Korsakov School of Music in St. Petersburg. The rest – as they say – is history. Great role model. “My mother was a fantastic cook in the Soviet sense – not exactly health-food. I remember a pan full of fat that she had on the stove all the time, and she was always warning us about it: ‘Don’t touch it, don’t throw it away – I’ll use that again!’,” writes Netrebko, who also confesses that cooking has only become more important in recent years. “As a young woman I never really had time for cooking, so unfortunately I didn’t learn any kitchen secrets from my mother. I did ask my aunt and my sister Natasha for advice later.” Going to America. “However, I was completely overwhelmed by the world I was immersed in – the bright sunshine of California, the happy people, their joy of life and their open attitudes. A big shock for a post-Soviet girl! At home, everyone had always been stuffy and deadly serious, now I suddenly looked into smiling faces, radiant with vital energy, cheerfulness, friendliness, cordiality was the norm – and I liked it.” The only thing she didn’t like was the food. At the time, she subsisted on crab cakes and donuts.“I really had to get used to American food, and that was especially true of salads: as a Russian, green leaves were not a salad for me – salad had to be made with mayonnaise.Today I love green ‘bunny salad’ so much!” the 50-year-old star soprano reveals. Life in New York. Netrebko, who has long owned a flat in Manhattan, loves good company. “That’s why I like to throw parties and serve my guests. My flat is an ideal place to have a party: it’s not uncommon for dozens of guests to crowd in here. My crispy, tender pork from the oven has become rather popular.” For good Russian food, she says, you have to get out of Manhattan a bit, but since New York is her home, she cooks morning, noon and night. Vienna is her second home. “What do I love about Viennese cuisine? Wiener Schnitzel, of course, but I don’t cook it myself because I don’t want to use such huge amounts of oil. However, I do make crepes, filled with apricot jam and flambéed. Actually, the blini of Russian cuisine and crepes are the same thing. When I’m at home, I always cook, otherwise I eat out. There is actually nothing I don’t eat. I often go to Padrone Aki Nuredini’s Ristorante Sole in Annagasse, where I can get homemade pasta with shrimps and courgette or risotto with chanterelles. In Austria you can eat well anywhere, there is great goulash or Wiener Schnitzel on every corner. And many wonderful restaurants with fantastic specialities – a true paradise for me!” 68
For friends & family Traeger invented the wood pellet grill and has continued to perfect the barbecue art.
100 percent natural hardwood is the fuel that delivers the typical Traeger aroma. Natural hardwood pellets are conveyed from the storage container to the combustion chamber by means of a screw conveyor, where they are ignited by a heating rod. The fan distributes heat as well as smoke for even, uniform cooking. The drip tray prevents the fire from flaring up, keeping flames away from the food. Simple operation and straightforward controls mean you need less time to look after the grill and can enjoy more tasty moments with friends and family. Cook the goose for another hour or until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the breast registers 74° C. While the goose is on the grill, prepare the red cabbage. Heat butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add the cabbage and braise briefly. Add apple juice, 200 ml water, red wine vinegar, bay leaves and cloves. Season with salt and pepper and put the pot on the grill. Cook the red cabbage for 50–60 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the red currant jelly to the red cabbage and stir. Cook for a further 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh apples and cranberries before serving. Once the goose has reached an internal temperature of 74° C, remove it from the grill, cover it with foil and let it rest for 30 minutes. Carve the goose and serve with the warm red cabbage. Bon appetit!

HEALTHY THROUGH FASTING
Is fasting healthy? The term is often associated with renunciation and deprivation. Yet fasting can be good for body and soul. At Marienkron Spa, an experienced team helps us focus on and learn to celebrate deceleration and regeneration. A path to joy. T

Where nuns welcomed Kneipp guests 50 years ago, today it’s all about internal wellbeing. Fifteen nuns live in the neighboring convent, and their spiritual seminars complement the spa services. After all, you regularly take your car in for service, so why not do the same for your body? Health is a complex topic. Individual diets and fasting is the basis of every therapy concept at Marienkron. “Most of the time, people come with health problems,” explains the head spa doctor Dr. Ulrike Göschl. “That is why our therapies are WELCOME VIENNA

custom tailored for each guest after a thorough medical consultation. Fasting and a vegetarian diet have an anti-inflammatory effect as well as a positive impact on the musculoskeletal system. This is the path to lasting progress. Metabolic diseases, the onset of high blood pressure, stress symptoms and mood swings can also be treated successfully with the right diet. In the end, it’s always about holistic care.” The Greek word “diaita” means to find one’s own healthy balance. rely on food bans and calorie counting. “We offer forms of nutrition that bring about a sustainable, life-changing diet that our guests can integrate into their everyday lives.” Deliberate fasting must be done correctly. Fasting has experienced a great boom in recent years and is usually associated with weight loss programmes. You often hear about miracle diets and abstruse forms of nutrition. At Marienkron, fasting is an important part of a holistic nutritional concept. “In order to reduce weight in the long term, we recommend a change of diet. After all, the excess kilos didn’t crawl onto our bodies overnight like a fatsuit that you can take off. With crash diets, a lot of muscle mass is lost, which initiates a yo-yo effect,” explains dietologist Christina Karner. Marienkron offers three different forms of fasting: vegetable, soup and juice. The type of fasting depends on one’s own fasting experience and the presence of any prior illnesses. For vegetable and soup fasts, the day begins with a warm porridge, accompanied by a fasting roll WELCOME VIENNA

and a large assortment of teas. At lunchtime, there are vegetable soups or a plate of steamed vegetables accompanied by potatoes or cereals. “We offer several courses to preserve the enjoyment factor and so that you are not just sitting in front of a tiny plate of food,” says Karner. Ideally, guests prepare for their fast 2–3 days in advance by avoiding sugar, meat or coffee. After the third day, the familiar “fasting high” sets in. It varies in intensity, but there is “a surge of energy, both mentally and physically. You simply become more sensitive and attuned to your surroundings,” Ulrike Göschl says about her own experience. “You connect with yourself, the ballast of everyday life falls away, which improves decision-making. The majority of our guests are healthconscious people in mid-life who notice that things are no longer running smoothly in their everyday lives. The effect of a health stay lasts about half a year. So it really does make a difference when you find a healthier track on which to travel.”

Looking for a younger look even as time flies by? With this revolutionary ultrasound technology anything is possible. The production of fresh collagen is stimulated by thermal energy that creates a targeted, punctual heat effect in the deeper skin layers. Collagen is a natural protein which firms skin tissue noticeably. Unlike conventional laser or radio frequency devices, the heat does not come from the outside to the inside, but the other way round: from the inside to the outside. In this way, energy is evenly
distributed and guarantees a gentler skin tightening. The treatment is individually adapted to individual body and skin type. The safety of this method has been proven in various clinical studies with over 1.75 million treatments performed. In addition, a single treatment is sufficient to achieve visible results and does not need to be repeated. The skin surface is not damaged and there are no visual side effects. So you can go about your daily activities and then head out to where life pulsates. ultherapy.com WELCOME VIENNA
