Welcome to the 2019 edition of the Selected Artists guide. Whether you are a promoter looking for artists or a performing group looking for soloists or composers, this guide will help you find excellent, affordable artists. The guide is split into five sections. 1. The Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artists (orange pages 5-13) are awardwinning artists who have auditioned and been chosen by a panel of experienced musicians. 2. The Adopt a Composer project (yellow pages 14-17). These are talented, emerging composers who have been selected for their ability to work with leisure-time ensembles.

The St Martin-in-the-Fields Chamber Music competition winners (red pages 18-19) The St Martin's Chamber Music Competition is run by Making Music and St Martin-in-the-Fields and awards an outstanding young ensemble with performance opportunities. 4. National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (blue pages 20-27) The singers in this section are all graduates of the NYCGB Fellowship programme, selected on the basis of their time as NYCGB Fellows, and their more recent work as professional singers. 5. Our Selected Artists (purple pages 29-56) are recommended by the Selected Artists Panel (formed of Making Music promoter members).

The Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artists award celebrates the best of the UK’s young musical talent, at the same time as providing Making Music member groups with an affordable way of booking the stars of tomorrow. Each year the award is presented to six of the UK’s most talented young musicians.

How to book the Young Artists

•

The award was created in 1961 and has helped to launch the careers of dozens of young musicians including Steven Isserlis, Elizabeth Watts and Craig Ogden. It is made possible by the generosity of the Philip and Dorothy Green Music Trust, which promotes young artists and composers.

Once this is confirmed, book the Young Artist as you would usually book any artist. To secure the fees listed here, make sure to tell them when booking that you found them in this guide. The fees listed are available anytime up to and including April 2021.

•

Once the booking is confirmed, let us know the date of the concert.

•

After the concert, pay the artist(s) and contact us to claim the subsidy.

All Making Music member groups can book these young artists, but there are a limited number of subsidies available so please check with us before booking an artist.

Subsidies All Making Music members can book the Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artists for a set fee of £250 (or £500 with accompanist) and then claim a £150 subsidy (or £250 if the soloist comes with an accompanist). Please be aware that if you decide to pay more, the subsidy will stay the same. You can only claim a subsidy for one Young Artist in this guide. Contact us for advice if you would like to book more than one, as sometimes exceptions apply. You will have to follow certain guidelines to acknowledge the subsidy in your promotional material and send in a copy of the signed contract to secure the subsidy. Charlotte Bowden is currently working towards her Masters in Performance at the Royal College of Music. She is a Britten-Pears Young Artist and was recently awarded second prize and the audience prize at the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards. Upcoming performances in 2019 include a recital at the Aldeburgh Festival and studying and performing at the Verbier Festival Atelier Lyrique. Award-winning Spanish saxophonist Manu Brazo made his concerto debut in the UK with Guildford Symphony Orchestra in 2016, and since then has performed with the London Sinfonietta, Orquesta Betica de Camara and London City Orchestra among others. Since 2017 Manu has won the Royal College of Music Saxophone Competition, the GSO Young Artist Competition and was selected for the London Sinfonietta Academy and the BrittenPears YAP. He has performed in over 30 concerts in the UK, Norway, Greece and Spain as a soloist and with Vario Duo. Already the recipient of several international prizes, Indira Grier is currently a Royal College of Music scholar studying with Alexander Chaushian. Previously she was taught by Melissa Phelps and then by Troels Svane at the Musikhochschule Luebeck. Indira won the 2018 Royal College of Music Concerto Competition and in 2019 she was awarded a Gold Medal in the Vienna International Music Competition. RECITAL PROGRAMMES

Finnish violinist Abel Puustinen made his debut with a symphony orchestra in 2014 performing Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto at the Helsinki Music Centre. He has since performed as a soloist with orchestras such as The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. His passion for chamber music has taken him all around Europe and to Asia. He is a Young Artist at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and has performed at the Wigmore Hall, Conway Hall, King’s Place, Helsinki Music Centre, The Temppeliaukio Church, Kallio Church, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Albert Hall. Latvian pianist Antonina Suhanova has been performing internationally since 2000. She has appeared with orchestras across Europe and Russia, collaborating with Andris Nelsons and Vladimir Spivakov. Antonina has received awards from the Hattori Foundation, Help Musicians UK, and the Drake Calleja Trust, and has been awarded the Kenneth Loveland Gift and the William Brown Prize in the Scottish International Piano Competition. She debuted at the Barbican Hall in 2016 as a finalist of the Guildhall Gold Medal Prize, and her debut at the Wigmore Hall in 2018 was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Composers from the Adopt a Composer project Making Music's Adopt a Composer project pairs a leisure-time group with an emerging composer, with the composer collaborating with the group on a new piece written specifically for them over the course of a year. These talented emerging composers, who took part in the project between 2016 and 2018, are selected for their ability to work with leisure-time ensembles. All Making Music members can book them for commissions by contacting them directly via their websites. Since the project began in 2000, Adopt a Composer has created over 100 partnerships, producing hugely diverse works and performances in the process. Many of the composers have had further performances or commissions as a result of

being part of the scheme and several have been nominated for awards, including the British Composer Awards. Anna Appleby loves folk and jazz, and specialises in writing contemporary classical music. She composed Turbines for Merchant Sinfonia, which explores nature and technology and captures the identity of the orchestra. She is based in Manchester and has written for artists including the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the BBC Singers. www.annaappleby.com Ben See is a composer and performer based in London. He specialises in contemporary vocal music. One of the pieces he wrote for Stoneleigh Youth Orchestra, We Want, balances the everyday things that young people want (like delicious biscuits), with bigger-picture desires about being taken seriously. ADOPT A COMPOSER

Edmund Hunt's work includes instrumental, vocal and electroacoustic music. He composed Vita Hominum for The Singers, which was inspired by the early medieval history of the group's native Northumbria. Edmund is based in Derbyshire and has a PhD in composition at Birmingham Conservatoire. www.edmundhunt.com

Esmeralda Conde Ruiz composed The Other Ocean for the Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra, to accompany pieces of local film archive material. She is a composer and conductor, and has run interdisciplinary choral projects, including conducting a 500-strong choir of community voices at the Tate Modern. @esmeraldamusic on Twitter Gaynor Barradell composed Step Up, an imaginary journey by bike through Edinburgh’s streets, composed for the Edinburgh Concert Band. Based in Scotland, she plays several different instruments for bands and orchestras, teaches instrumental lessons and enjoys helping adult learners begin their journey into musicianship. www.gaynorbarradell.com In his composition for Côr Crymych a'r Cylch, Y Gors Fawr, Max Charles Davies’ set a poem by Eifion Daniels - a member of the choir’s bass section - which explores an enchanted old stone circle in Mynachlod-ddu. Upcoming projects include a concerto for piano and orchestra with narrator, and two more symphonies in his 'Tiny' series. www.maxcharlesdavies.com London-based Peter Yarde Martin composed Starsong and Nocturne for the Bellfolk Handbell Ringers, which evokes constellations in the night sky. He has written for professional orchestras, schoolchildren, gospel choirs, brass bands, church organs and electronics and performs regularly as a trumpeter, keyboardist and singer. www.peteryardemartin.com 15

Christopher Schlechte-Bond is based in London and his compositions draw on folk, world and theatrical elements. He composes chamber, choral and orchestral music and often incorporates electronic elements. Martian Saloon, written for KEMS Concert Band, evokes a soundscape of ethereal harmonies and atmospheric playing techniques. www.chrisschlechtebond.com Aran Browning's work with Drake Music Scotland led to him being awarded the Kimie Composition Prize, composing Cardboard Creations and exploring inclusivity in further projects. Other collaborators include Tong Lam, BBC SSO, Ensemble Modern and musicbits. Rosie Clements grew up in rural Somerset, and this background often feeds into her work. In addition to composing she has an interest in festival production and outdoor arts. Her piece for Spectrum Singers, In Reginald's Garden, is inspired by the life of horticulturalist Reginald Cory and his family. www.rosieclements.com

London-based Brazilian percussionist/composer Adriano Adewale has an exploratory approach to music, and is known for his ability to create magical soundscapes from the seemingly banal. Suite Dialogues, written for Horsham Symphony Orchestra, creates a nurturing space for all to come together through peaceful, poignant and truthful ways. www.adrianoadewale.co.uk Mark Boden has been commissioned by ensembles including London Philharmonic Orchestra, Hebrides Ensemble, Sinfonia Cymru and BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Glasgow-based Shona Mackay is a mixed-media artist who is interested in the use of music alongside visual and performative elements and has been exploring work involving installation and interactive formats. NYCGB Fellowship Programme The NYCGB Fellowship Programme is a young artist programme run by the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain. The NYCGB select eight outstanding musicians to join the programme each year, and trains them to become ‘choral leaders’, offering solo and ensemble masterclasses, work experience with NYCGB’s junior choirs and on its schools' outreach programme, and opportunities to perform in recordings and live in concert. The singers in this section are all graduates of the programme, carefully selected for the guide on the basis of their time as NYCGB Fellows, and their more recent work as professional singers.

South Korean Hyungi moved to the Purcell School aged 14, and won the BBC Young Musician 2012 Category final and the Walter Todds Bursary. She travelled to Italy in 2011 to win the Fermo International Marimba Competition. After leaving Purcell with the Feltenstein Leavers Award, the Royal College of Music welcomed her with an ABRSM scholarship. Since then, she came second in the Karl Jenkins Arts Award 2017 and 2018, debuted in Vietnam, was a featured artist in the London Ear Festival, performed concertos and commissioned new works. In 2019 she will be playing at St Martin-in-the-Fields, working with Live Music Now and premiering a concerto.

Winner of the Suoni d’Arpa International Harp Competition, Rosanna made her London debut in the Royal Festival Hall at the age of 20. She gives regular recitals throughout the UK and abroad including an appearance at the Wigmore Hall, the Three Choirs Festival and a recent return to the Royal Festival Hall. Handsworth-born Xhosa Cole is an embodiment of the success of numerous community arts programmes in Birmingham. In October 2018 he won the BBC Young Jazz Musician competition following a critically acclaimed performance in the final at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The London Klezmer Quartet (LKQ) was formed in 2009 by a group of klezmer specialists keen to explore the almost-lost wedding music tradition of Jewish eastern Europe. The band plays all over the UK, has toured Australia six times, and performs at festivals and venues of all sizes in countries including Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Latvia, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden. LKQ has released four well-reviewed recordings and makes regular media appearances in print, live on the BBC, and on ABC Australia.

Formed at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Blackweir Brass have gone on to enjoy performances such as at St John Smith’s Square, St David’s Hall and the Endelienta Series. An emerging group, its members look forward to studying at a postgraduate level at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Music. Major influences on the group are the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and the poetry of Sir John Betjeman.

The Hermes Experiment are winners of the Royal Overseas League Mixed Ensemble Prize 2019, Tunnell Trust Awards 2017 and were Park Lane Group Young Artists 2015/16. As well as creating their own innovative arrangements, the ensemble regularly commissions new works, having already commissioned over 50 composers at various stages of their careers.

Formed in 2012, the Magnard Ensemble have built a reputation for delivering high quality concert performances. Ensemble Molière is fast becoming recognised for engaging performances and inspiring programming. The ensemble has performed throughout the UK and Europe. Notable highlights include their debut at St John’s Smith Square and reaching the finals of the York Early Music International Young Artists Competition. The ensemble has also premiered their first cross-arts opera Pygmalion, funded by Arts Council England. Ensemble Molière has broadcast live on BBC Radio3 In Tune with highlights from both Pygmalion and their programme Medicine and Mortality.

Inspired by Couperin's trio sonata Les Visionnaires, this programme explores the evolution of this work and its influence on later composers such as Telemann and Blavet. (4 players) 3. Medicine and Mortality – life, death and beyond A programme centred around Marin Marais' graphic depiction of an operation to remove a bladder stone. Through poignant music and dramatic narration, we gain a vivid picture of life and death in France during the time of Louis XIV.
