The

real

Coronation Ceremony

was held in Maleny

King Charles has given “sincere and heartfelt” thanks to everyone involved in his coronation weekend and said he and his wife, Queen Camilla would rededicate their lives to service as three days of celebrations drew to a close.

God Save the King was sung, but those who said “the total apathy that Australia has for the monarchy and the construct of royalty in 2023” didn’t know what they were talking about as the real Coronation Celebrations were actually held in country Australia, including Maleny. A lovely celebration Coronation was held with Lady Sharon Schofield on Sunday happened at Witta. The Coronation included champagne, cups of tea, beautiful hand made morning tea fair and was attended by the aristocrats of Maleny.

Even though King Charles and Queen Camille did not attend in person, they did both attend in spiritalong with the spirit of

POLITICAL COMMENT MADE BY

Qld Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk

After criticism of the Queensland Youth Crime Program.

Ms Palaszczuk said her government was “throwing a lot of money” at the youth crime problem

Simply “throwing more money at the problem does necessarily not mean that the problem is fixed. There has to be a plan - execution of the plan and a review of the results. You cannot just wash your hands of the matter!

Australian horseman and cattleman, Tom Quilty started to sponsor the cup in 1967.

The original gold cup permanently stands at the Longreach Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Queensland.

The Tom Quilty has been run in the KenilworthImbil areas a number of times since the held there in 1970.

Australian National Volunteer Week 2023

No Australian community could survive in their present form if it was not for the many volunteers who make local community organisations resilient without their dedication to volunteering for their organisation.

It is estimated that over five million people volunteer through an organisation annually, while an additional 6.5 million provide informal volunteering support within their community.

Volunteering can mean different things to different people and may be and may be influenced by factors such as faith and culture the desire to do something worthwhile and their own lifestyle are all primary motivations.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and will be held on 15 – 21 May 2023.

Volunteers are Change Makers, taking action to make the world a better place by contributing as the often- invisible workforce that supports the nation every day.

Around Glass house Electorate with Mr Andrew Powell M.P.

Steve Irwin Way upgrade nears completion

For those who travel by car to Brisbane and points south daily for work they will be pleased to know that the Department of Transport and Main Roads advises that works to realign a one-kilometre section of Steve Irwin Way between Nursery Road and Moffatt Road at Glass House Mountains are almost complete. Final tie-in works are required to enable traffic to be switched over from existing Steve Irwin Way to the new alignment.

It is anticipated the tie-in works will take approximately three months to complete, commencing early May 2023.

These works are being undertaken to accommodate the new rail corridor and track infrastructure for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (B2N) project (Stage 1).

Works will involve some localised traffic impacts, including reduced speed limits and temporary road shoulder and single lane closures on Steve Irwin Way.

Local residents can expect increased construction traffic, dust and noise during construction.

The pedestrian path on the western side of Steve Irwin Way will remain open during works.

Premier to hand back keys to Wellcamp Toowoomba

Wellcamp has cost Queenslanders $220 million and today the Premier will hand back the keys. That’s $500,000 wasted every day by the Palaszczuk Labor Government in a cost of living crisis.

It’s barely been used and we will never own it. This money could have paid the average Queensland family’s power bill for 257 years. This monumental waste is a product of a Government that’s more focussed on politics than people.

They’re more concerned with their political survival instead of helping Queenslanders struggling though a cost of living crisis.

Do you have a mould problem

Why you should have an Air Dehumidifier

If you want your home to remain as comfortable as possible during the summer months, you should consider using a dehumidifier to reduce the amount of excessive moisture in the air.

With the present indications are that the atmosphere will remain humid throughout the next 4 to 6 months mould and mildew will continue to grow.

Using a dehumidifier during the summer also improves the air quality inside your home and can eliminate potential allergens like mould and mildew. A dehumidifier also reduces the chance of dust mites which thrive in high humidity areas and also eliminates odours.

Mr. Andrew Wallace Federal MP for Fisher Federal Member for Fisher

Coalition observations of the Federal 2023 -2024 budget

In the opposition reply to the 2023 - 2024 Australian budget the coalition makes these comments:

1. 10 million Australians face a tax hike this year and around 175,000 are projected to lose their jobs.

2. This Government is spending an additional $185 billion dollars, but millions of middle-income Australians won’t receive a cent.

3. Amidst a housing and rental crisis, migration will increase by 1.5 million people over five years. (More than the population of Adelaide).

4. Your power bills are going up by more than $500 dollars.

5. The Government’s policies will cause inflation to stay higher for longer, putting pressure on interest rates.

What the Treasurer didn’t say, but what is now clear, is that Labor continues to break its promises to Australians who are hurting – including cheaper mortgages and a $275 cut to your power bill. Labor has squandered the opportunities they inherited on coming to office. This included the lowest unemployment rate in almost 50 years. And they have benefited from soaring revenues from coal, gas and other resources. Labor’s Budget reveals a deteriorating economy. Australia’s core inflation is now higher than every major advanced economy.

Anthony Albanese has no plan to tackle the challenges our nation faces.

But the Coalition does.

The present Australian “Cost O fLivingCrisis” is crippling families and businesses. The Federal Government could pull the right levers to ease the burden on hard-working Australians. Instead, they're playing political games.

Winter is fast approaching and it appears that it is going to lead into a dryer period than we have faced over the past couple of years. With the expected climate change there is likely to be a substantial increase in the temperature reached on the hottest days, and an increase in the frequency of hot days and the duration of warm spells. This will inevitably lead to the possibility of more intense bush fires in rural areas. We have already recently seen the devastating results of wild fires in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

During a bushfire, your safety depends on your preparations and the decisions you make. Make your bushfire survival plan now and know exactly what you can do to protect yourself, your family, and your property.

Now is the time of year to ensure that you are well prepared for the next supper season.

Farm and Rural Property Bushfire Safety Plans

Living in a rural area comes with a range of challenges, and bushfires are one of the biggest threats. These fires can spread quickly and can be extremely difficult to contain, which is why it is essential for property owners to have a comprehensive bushfire safety plan in place. In this chapter, we will outline some essential steps that farmers and rural landowners should take to protect their properties from bushfires.

Assess Your Property

The first step in creating a bushfire safety plan is to assess your property. This assessment should include identifying potential fire hazards, such as dry vegetation, fallen branches, and other debris. You should also consider the location and condition of your buildings and any other structures on your property, such as sheds and barns.

Create a Bushfire Safety Plan

Once you have assessed your property, you should create a bushfire safety plan. This plan should include details of emergency procedures, evacuation plans, and contact information for emergency services. You should also include a detailed map of your property, showing access points and water sources.

Maintain Your Property

One of the most effective ways to protect your property from bushfires is to maintain it properly. This means regularly removing

What do we really mean when we say our toilet paper helps build toilets?

We trust that our partner organisations know how to best improve global access to proper sanitation – that means our donation could go to building toilets. To put it into perspective, a child under five dies every two minutes from diarrhoea diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. Profits from the sale of this toilet paper is used to building toilets, but could also mean it supports larger clean water projects. This is a win - win situation!

adequate firebreaks. You should also make sure that your property is easily accessible to emergency services.

Prepare Your Livestock

If you have livestock on your property, it is essential to have a plan in place to protect them from bushfires. This may include relocating them to a safer area, providing them with access to water, and ensuring that they are identifiable with ear tags or brands.

Stay Informed

Finally, it is essential to stay informed about bushfire conditions in your area. You should regularly check weather forecasts and fire danger ratings and be prepared to take action if necessary. You should also sign up for any alerts or notifications from your local emergency services.

Fire weather is a measure of fuel dryness and hot, dry, windy conditions. Climate change is likely to result in harsher fire weather in the future.

Create a Bushfire Safety Plan

Once you have assessed your property, you should create a bushfire safety plan. This plan should include details of emergency procedures, evacuation plans, and contact information for emergency services. You should also include a detailed map of your property, showing access points and water sources.

Importance of community action in bushfire safety

Bushfires are a common occurrence in many parts of Australia, and they can cause significant damage to property, wildlife, and human life. While the government and emergency services have a role to play in bushfire safety, the importance of community action cannot be overstated. In this subchapter, we will explore the importance of community action in bushfire safety and how property owners, community groups, and emergency responders can work together to protect their neighbourhoods.

Community bushfire safety initiatives are essential in developing a proactive approach to bushfire safety. These initiatives involve the community members learning about bushfire safety, preparing their properties for bushfire events, and developing evacuation plans. By working together, communities can share resources and knowledge about bushfire safety, which can help to reduce the risk of bushfire damage.

Emergency response and evacuation plans are critical in ensuring the safety of residents during bushfire events. Property owners should be aware of the local emergency response procedures and evacuation plans. They should also have a plan in place for their own property, which should include clearing vegetation and debris from around their homes, ensuring that gutters and roofs are clear of debris, and having a reliable water source available. The Sunshine Coast Council web site has much information to assist with this preparation: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Living-andCommunity/Community-Safety/Disasters Bushfire safety for farmers and rural landowners is also an essential aspect of community action. Rural landowners should be aware of the risks associated with bushfires and take steps to protect their properties. By working together, communities can reduce the risk of bushfire damage and protect their neighbourhoods.

Call to action for property owners to protect their neighbourhoods from bushfires

As property owners, we have a responsibility to protect our homes and neighbourhoods from bushfires. With climate change causing longer and more intense fire seasons, it's essential that we take action now to prepare for the worst.

Here are some steps you can take to protect your property and community:

Sunshine Coast Council's bushfire management program helps to protect and maintain ecosystems in the coast's 7,700 hectares of council environment reserves.

https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ environment/bushland-protection/ bushfire-management/

1. Create a Bushfire Survival Plan: This plan should outline what you will do in the event of a bushfire, including evacuation procedures, communication with family and neighbours, and preparations for pets and livestock.

2. Maintain Your Property: Keep gutters and roofs clear of debris, trim trees and vegetation, and create fire breaks around your property.

3. Install Fire-Resistant Features: Consider installing fire-resistant roofing and siding, double-glazed windows, and ember-proof vents.

4. Join a Community Bushfire Safety Initiative: Work with your neighbours to create a community-wide plan that includes regular fire drills, communication protocols, and emergency response teams.

In conclusion, community action is crucial in bushfire safety. Property owners, community groups, and emergency responders can work

5. Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with fire alerts and warnings, and make sure you have a reliable source of information, such as a battery-powered radio or smartphone app.

6. Have an Emergency Response and Evacuation Plan: This plan should include a designated meeting place, a list of emergency contacts, and important documents and supplies that you'll need to take with you in the event of an evacuation.

7. Work with Local Emergency Services: Get to know your local fire department and other emergency responders, and find out what resources are available to you in the event of a bushfire.

For farmers and rural landowners, there are additional steps you can take to protect your property and livestock. This includes creating fireresistant paddocks, ensuring adequate water supply, and having a plan in place for relocation of livestock in the event of an emergency.

In conclusion, protecting your property and community from bushfires requires a combination of planning, preparation, and action. By taking these steps now, you'll be better equipped to handle the challenges of a bushfire and keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

In this year for Safer Internet, Australians are being called to Connect. - Reflect. - Protect.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

The State Government has announced that it will build a new youth detention centre adjacent to the Woodford Correctional Centre offering “home-like accommodation” and purpose-built units. It will also build another similar centre in Cairns, N.Q. These will supplement the already existing centres, the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre and West Moreton Youth Detention Centre, both in Wacol west of Brisbane, and the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Townsville. These new centres are in response to the spiralling “out of control” youth crime waves that Queensland is suffering.

The states own figures on recidivism consistently show that youth who are released from correctional confinement experience high rates of rearrest.

Incarceration of youth is a very expensive exercise, so the time spent must contain positive outcomes.

Incarcerating youth alone undermines public safety, damages young people’s physical and mental health, impedes their educational and career success, and often exposes them to abuse.

Any incarceration must include an employmentfocused program which engages young people in a combination of high school completion, construction skills training, and personal development activities.

At the same time the youth program should provide counselling, support, skill-building and recreational programs so that they have some tools to help them navigate through pressures that they will encounter in their lives going forward.

Parents of young people have a very large part to play in shaping a young person’s character. Parents have to learn the differences between tempering natural affection with a little tough love. Too much and the child’s spirit can be broken for keeps. Too little and the child learns quickly that it can get away with anything. We have to get this right - it is too important not to.

Truthful says that one day last week he was in Maleny at Maple Street Meats Butchery shop when a dog walks in and the butcher shoos him away.

About 5 minutes later he comes back with $10 and a note saying “2kgs of steak” surprised the butcher reluctantly takes the money and hands him a bag with the meat.

As the dog left the butcher shop, the butcher, Blair closed down the shop and decided to follow the dog. The dog gets to the bus stop in Maple Street and waits. Soon the bus arrives and the dog pulls a ticket out of its collar, gives it to the driver and hops on.

Blair follows him to see what was going to happen. The dog got off of the bus on Balmoral Road and began to walk still not have eaten the meat. Finally the dog walks up to a house over the road from Maleny Cheese factory and sets the meat down.

The dog backs up and charges and slams into the door. He does this about twice. Finally a man opens the door and starts yelling at the dog calling him stupid and retard- ed.

Blair finds this horrible so he talks to the man and says “STUPID?! This dog went to my shop, paid for meat and took it on the bus finding his way back home per fectly. HOW IS HE STUPID??!”

The man then replied saying, “ Yes, that’s all great but he forgot the key for the 3rd time this week!”

Morale: Sometimes you just cannot please some people.

BiCentenary Lane Upgrade

BiCentenary Lane, Maleny is about to undergo an upgrade to improve safety and parking in that area. Part of the work will include the provision of fifty new parking spots on the southern side of the street extending the existing parking area.

Work will also include about 200 m of concrete pathway about 1.8m wide on the northern side of the street.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of June 2023 depending on weather. Access to this area for parking during construction will be unavailable.

The Maleny Society this year marks the historic hundred year anniversary of the first Maleny Agricultural Show which runs on Friday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd at the Maleny Show-grounds.

The Blackall Range and the Maleny district have often been called the "Garden of Eden" because of the ideal climate, scenery, productivity and generous rainfall.

From humble beginnings in 1923, the first Maleny Show was held on the same show-grounds site on Maleny-Stanley River Rd.

In 2020 the 83rd Maleny Show did not proceed due to the 2020 Covid-19 situation.

During the Great Depression and unfortunately during some of years of the Depression the show was abandoned – in 1932, 1934 and 1935. A drought which caused great hardship in 1950 also caused the show to be cancelled in that year.

Agricultural shows have been a part of Australian culture since 1822 and are strongly connected to local communities through educational, competitive, social and cultural experiences.

Maleny would have so many stories to tell about those early pioneer days. There is no doubt agricultural shows are still important events where local communities gather and celebrate their farming achievements showcasing livestock and produce.

Agricultural Shows such as Maleny’s would not be successful

without the tireless work of local volunteers who provide so much of their time to make the show a success for all who visit and compete.

It has always been so, and the story of the Maleny show volunteers began in 1923, when Maleny’s first show opened, on the June 26 and 27, 1923, in pouring rain.

Although the economy was still recovering after the First World War, there was enough pride in the region's agricultural production to generate interest in a show.

Facilities were sparse so the ladies of the district provided meals and refreshments from a tent on the hill. The area was a very different place then and things were done differently. A wood stove was how the cooking was done and if mother was lucky she might have an ice chest or later a kerosene refrigerator to keep food cool! This was an Australian invention in 1923 with electricity arriving in the region in late 1939.

Delicious foods are still served at the show and many types of foods are on offer these days. Many of the recipes and cakes on display are

perhaps from those early Maleny and district pioneering family recipes, handwritten into exercise books handed down over many years.

The Maleny Show Society used plans supplied by the Caboolture Show Society to construct an industrial pavilion measuring 24 metres by 11 metres which was near enough to completion to be used for the second annual show on April 23 and 24, 1924.

On July 30 1926, the Nambour Chronicle described the Maleny Show, in its fourth year, enthusiastically. "Wonderful! It seemed that this expressive adjective was upon everybody's lips during the two Maleny show days, and whether the fourth

When getting to the show was an elegant affair!

Origionally the original show committee purchased 18 acres of uncleared scrub for a permanent show-ground. Now the show-ground is two-and-a-half times its original size and some 16 community sport and recreation groups now enjoy the excellent facilities. There is also an increasing numbers of caravaners and other campers enjoying the facilities.

"The picturesque little show-ground has again been vastly improved during the past 12 months. Now we can notice a neat grandstand which will seat approximately 300 people and a spacious pig pavilion which were not on the ground 12 months ago. The committee and general public must have worked like Trojans to transform a patch of thick virgin scrub into the improved ground they have at present, and all in years.”

In summing up the 1926 show, the paper gave high praise to the region's cattle. "To write of the exhibits, one must be excused for the frequent use of adjectives, but there are but few that will really give the reader a true idea of the excellence of some of the exhibition,” the story read.

"Of course, it can only be expected in a rich dairying district such as Maleny, the dairy cattle were an outstanding feature of the show.

P.L. Nott MLA officially opened the show and the new purpose-built grandstand in 1926. He described the grand parade of prizewinning stock during the afternoon as "a most interesting event displaying fully Maleny's wealth of stud stock”.

In 1927 the entertainment committee of the Maleny Show Society held a Pioneers Ball at the Maleny School of Arts in honour of the hardworking pioneers of the district. Mr. A Bryce welcomed the guests by saying it was to honour the men and women who with strong hearts had laid the foundations of what was to become a prosperous community.

What is a Guarantee? With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

In commercial or personal matters, if the lender thinks a borrower might not be able to repay a loan, they may ask the lender to provide a guarantee to increase the likelihood of the loan being repaid.

There are two types of guarantees:

• a first-party guarantee where the loan is guaranteed by security in the form of an asset; or

• a third-party guarantee where someone else guarantees the loan

You should always obtain legal advice before entering into a guarantee as lender, borrower, or guarantor

For the guarantor it is essential to understand, that should the borrower fail to repay the loan for any reason, it is the guarantor that must repay the loan in full. So guarantors should give the same care and consideration, as if taking out a loan personally.

While lithium-ion solar batteries have superior longevity, like any product their performance will gradually decline over time. As the battery charges and discharges during normal use, its capacity will naturally reduce after many years.

But if your usage is in line with optimum cycling specifications and your battery is well maintained, it can last for up to 15 years.

Your solar battery will perform at its best when installed in a cool, dry place with adequate ventilation.
