MBI'S Perspective
A Growing MBI Team BY CHAD KLEPPE PRESIDENT/CEO If you attended the most recent Annual Winter Conference, you might have seen a few new faces on the MBI team. In fact, there are a total of five new individuals who have joined the MBI team. These folks are a great addition to MBI and reflect the core values of MBI to be engaged professionals in service to others. Adam DoBraska Member Services Associate Adam will be our go-to for workforce efforts, as well as being the point person charged with member recruitment. If you want help in coordinating with a school to talk construction career advocacy, or have a trade partner who would benefit from an MBI membership, Adam is your guy! Christy Miller Accounting Manager Christy joined our team almost a year ago, so I guess you can’t consider her “new”. Regardless, Christy handles all things related to accounting for our organization. There are a lot of moving parts in MBI and Christy is able to manage it all.
Landi Sasek Administrative Assistant
2
Being our primary admin, Landi makes everyone’s job a little easier. Joining us last fall, Landi brings a wealth of organizational experience to MBI. She is also bi-lingual and one of her many projects has been to translate our tool box safety talks into Spanish.
Kim Hodne Safety Consultant By far our most experienced safety professional, Kim brings a wide array of training and expertise to CSSI. He can help develop a program from the groundup to implementation with a focus on sustainability. He has written many custom training programs of all types and enjoys time in the classroom training. He realizes it’s the employees that are most affected by safety’s success and they must have the resources and support to take ownership in safety because they (the employees) must believe in safety - and not just because they are told to. Chris Pankow Safety Consultant Since 2004, Chris has been a volunteer firefighter, first responder and certified EMT. In addition, he assists with coordinating training activities, expanding his knowledge into high/low angle rope rescue, grain bin safety and hazmat, among many other public safety initiatives. He also has experience in heavy-equipment operations, which is where his passion for training and safety began. Chris has an entrepreneurial-spirit, combined with a community-based ethic making him an effective cultural change agent. MBI is fortunate to have talented, hardworking staff members who constantly strive to create value for your membership investment.
THE MBI JOB BOARD Let Us Help You!
MBI members have many resources at their fingertips, but one of the biggest resources available to them is the Iowa Construction Job Board (www.iowaconstructionjobs.com). We want to make sure that members can put their best foot forward when it comes to building a strong workforce. A big selling point amongst current members is that they have the option to put an available job on our job board whenever they want. Future employees will be able to view all of the jobs on the job board, and will have the ability to apply for said position. MBI is the number one resource for the construction industry, and we use that as a tool for members to use as they look to grow their company. The Iowa Construction Job Board is marketed all over the State of Iowa, so it is invaluable for members to utilize it however they see fit. Our goal is to not only help add quality employees for our members, but to move the construction industry in a positive direction for years to come. MBI’s job board is a great and user-friendly way to accomplish the overall vision for our workforce initiative. The Job Board is a real time indicator of the sheer amount of options that individuals have at their disposal. Recently MBI participated in the Build My Future event, which is a great example of how we promote our job board to a large scale of potential future employees. If you are interested in posting on our job board, please contact Member Service Associate Adam DoBraska at ADoBraska@MBI.Build 515-777-5054. To gain access, members must login in with their username and password. If you need assistance, please contact Nichole Fry at NFry@MBI.Build.

OPENING SEPTEMBER 2022! 5
MBI Training Room Thanks to the efforts of the team at SVPA Architects, MBI members got a sneak peek of the new headquarters building during the recent Annual Winter Conference. The “sneak peek” shared the vision that was incorporated into the design aspects of the interior renovation. The design team at SVPA took into consideration a process in which MBI members, leadership and staff all provided details and perspectives on how a new association headquarters could better serve the membership and fulfill the mission of being the essential resource to Iowa’s commercial construction industry. SVPA, along with MBI’s owner’s representative Shyft Collective and The Weitz Company, who is the construction manager at risk for the project, are all playing such an important part in bringing this project to fruition. During this virtual tour, members saw the final design of the new space taking into account many of the features that will make this building MBI’s hub for networking; education and training; as well as creating a new environment for staff to carry on the business of MBI. The new space will accommodate over 70 people in the education and training center. Not only will those in attendance have state of the art technology at their fingertips, the facility will be outfitted with AV equipment to enable members to share in the educational experience from their own respective offices. This is important as MBI continues its efforts
6
Prefunction Area
to bring quality education and training, while being convenient to all members. The new facility will also be a great networking hub for all members to enjoy. The classroom space can be manipulated to open up to the adjoining pre-function room so that the entire area can be used for receptions and events. (Also, there are over 100 parking spaces adjacent to the new facility, making it very convenient for out of town guests.)
Board Room
MBI's Main Entry Like many other office spaces, there will be a highfunctioning Board room for MBI’s leadership to utilize. This room will be outfitted with equipment to allow for a full interactive experience, regardless of whether someone is in the room or participating remotely. Finally, the general staff space will include both workstations and individual offices, along with collaboration rooms; design studio space; and a podcast/recording room. All of these features will complement the talents of the professional staff and assist in bringing more value to MBI members.
We are planning to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony, along with an educational program to show off the building’s capabilities of bringing members together both in person, as well as via live feeds. We also plan to have an open house for everyone to come and see our new home. These are exciting times for MBI as this building will showcase MBI’s ability to serve its members.
Knowing that there are material lead times to deal with, our plan is to be at substantial completion by early August and fully moved in by September 1st.

Connecting Future Employees to MBI Members BY ADAM DOBRASKA MEMBER SERVICES ASSOCIATE
At MBI, we pride ourselves in making sure that the future is bright and plentiful in terms of workforce and talent development. Our members deserve the best employees, and it is our focus to help them to be able to recruit ready and reliable people. One way of ensuring our commitment to driving the workforce initiative is to host our Build Iowa Career Fairs. Each year we look forward to building on the success from the previous years regarding the overall impact that the Build Iowa Career Fairs has had on not only the students, but also our members that hire them. By the time this article is published, we will have hosted three of our Build Iowa Career Fairs. Many students were unaware of the amazing opportunities that the trades are able to provide them, so it is very rewarding both personally and professionally to see that they reach their full potential by making the transition into the industry. The Build Iowa Career Fairs are so popular amongst members, that vendor space fills up very shortly after we post about it. These Career Fairs show students, parents, and educators just how vital the construction industry is, and the great opportunities it provides.
BUILD IOWA
2022
CAREER FAIRS A brief rundown of how we conduct the Career Fairs is that we start with a short opening program to highlight the information and resources available to them. After the short opening, they are free to interact with MBI member companies and ask questions, followed up with a lunch that we will provide. Connecting these companies with students is a great passion of ours that we don’t take Members have had the FREE opportunity to show these 11th, 12th, and community college age students why they might be a good fit for their company. These Career Fairs are the perfect time for members to showcase their company culture. Members have always been interested in marketing their company to future employees, especially in a time where workforce is the number one issue throughout the state. MBI is the bridge that helps fill the gap between members/employers and future employees, and we take that responsibility in stride and we are extremely happy to do so. At the end of the day, our overall goal is to further move the needle on the commercial construction industry, and the Build Iowa Career Fairs does that in such a positive way! For future reference, if you are interested in the Build Iowa Career Fairs, please don’t hesitate to contact Adam DoBraska at ADoBraska@MBI.Build, or 515-777-5054.

Futuristic Ways to Connect & How to Register for Virtual Fieldtrips BY ADAM DOBRASKA MEMBER SERVICES ASSOCIATE
One of our newest and most innovative ways to attract new workers is the use of our Build Iowa Virtual Reality (V/R) program. The V/R program is a great way to showcase the industry without having to physically be on the jobsite. Students are receptive to technology in any form or fashion, and this is a way for us to reach this demographic of future employees as they are gearing up for the workforce. The sky is the limit in terms of how far this program and technology can advance the commercial construction industry, especially when it comes to the future of workforce.
If you are interested in making sure that students have the opportunity to go on virtual fieldtrips in your local community, please contact me at ADoBraska@MBI.Build or at 515-777-5054 to get registered. Also, you can go to the following link to register as well: https://mbi.build/ourservices/workforce-development/.
Once again, were fortunate to show MBI members the technology firsthand at our Annual Winter Conference. They were able to take a virtual fieldtrip through the V/R headsets. These virtual fieldtrips included going to jobsites and seeing what each occupation entailed. The trades jobs that I was able to expose members to include project manager, ironworker, mason, electrician, drywaller, HVAC technician, heavy equipment operator, and plumber/pipefitter; all within a virtual environment. Everyone that experienced the V/R program was thoroughly impressed, and loved that facts about each job popped up on the screen while they were using the headsets. 13
20 Legislativ
BY BEN HAMMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS BY BEN HAMMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS
By the publishing of this article, the Legislature will be close or have already adjourned. In a time when it seems hyperbolic speech is attached to everything we do in our lives, this session for the State of Iowa and MBI can only be described as historic. That’s because we accomplished something that has not substantively been changed in the existence of our bidding laws. Session began on Monday, January 10, 2022. As usual, Gov. Kim Reynolds conducted her Condition of the State on the following day where she released her budget to the public. The final adjournment date is always targeted for the 110th day of the calendar session. As a reminder, prior to session, the Government Affairs Committee met and provided a set of recommendations that were ultimately approved by the MBI Board of Directors. Those recommendations provide the roadmap for MBI’s public affairs team. This year, our agenda was as follows:
14
Construction Manager At-Risk Legislation Initial Position: MBI will continue to push our legislation from last year, Senate File 183 to final passage.
Outcome: We were able to get this passed and sent to the Governor’s desk. As of the publishing of this article, it awaits her signature and will go into effect on July 1, 2022.
Workforce Policy Reform Initial Position: MBI will support any and all efforts to bolster participation in the construction workforce. This includes supporting efforts to recruit people to Iowa, while encouraging retraining and retaining workers for immediate employment.
Outcome: As of the publishing of this article, the House and Senate continue to debate on the necessary level of unemployment. A reduction from 26 weeks to 16 weeks seems very likely to pass.
022 ve Report Tax Reform Initial Position: MBI will support efforts to lower personal and corporate taxes while encouraging transparent and stable reforms.
Outcome: Gov. Reynolds signed a historic tax reform bill in February that includes: • 3.9 percent individual, LLC, and S Corporation Rates • 5.5 Corporate Rates • 0 income tax on retirement income to include farm rental income for those who are 55 years old and meet other qualifications. • Cuts corporate tax credits to pay for the new corporate rate.
Outside of the MBI priorities, there were some good policy advancements for the the business community at large. We played a small part in a lot of these advancements, whether it was speaking in subcommittee or lending support to a number of issues.
Moving forward.... The public affairs team will begin assembling the agenda for 2023. That begins with the Government Affairs Committee meeting this summer. Lastly, please mark your calendar and plan to participate in one of our MBI-PAC events:

Protect RIIF (Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Funds) Funds

Initial Position: MBI has a long-standing principle of

protecting precious RIIF (Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund) dollars. These are gambling revenue dollars used for public vertical infrastructure. We will continue to judicious and watch closely how the Legislature plans to spend these dollars.
Central Iowa Sporting Clay Builders' Classic
Outcome: We remain encouraged that all the way to final passage, legislators will have adopted a waste-free RIIF budget bill.

2022 MBI-WORKS Endowment Recipients Announced BY BEN HAMMES DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS
At the 110th Annual Winter Conference, the MBI-WORKS Endowment, an MBI Endowment fund focused on addressing the commercial construction industry’s workforce needs, announced the 2022 Award Recipients. Earnings from the $5 million Endowment are being used to provide financial assistance through a grant solicitation process to programs and projects focused on increasing the number of people entering the commercial construction workforce and raising the awareness of the commercial construction industry and the career opportunities available in it. MBI President & CEO Chad Kleppe stated, “As an industry that is an active participant in the war for talent and workers, we are taking direct action by investing our own resources into programs across the state that are focused on changing the landscape. The MBI-WORKS Endowment is excited to announce this round of funding for four very deserving programs. We are proud of the membership at MBI for making these strategic investments into programs that are creating opportunities for future generations of construction workers.” The following projects have been announced as the 2022 Award Recipients: MBI Submitting Member: Kingland Construction Services Non-Profit: Forest City YMCA John V. Hanson Career Center Forest City, Iowa Award: $76,050
These funds will remodel a storage space into the YSTC to provide a home for after school/summer programs to engage grades K-8 with experience in skilled trades. The programs will be offered at no charge and provide hands-on education in carpentry, mechanics, virtual welding, electrical/plumbing, and more. The YSTC will be used to develop skills that will benefit youth throughout their lives while sparking a passion for activities that may lead then down the skilled trades career path. The John V. Hanson Career Center will assist with curriculum design and provide speakers to ensure our participants get the highest quality education possible and serve as a conduit to higher level programs.

Master Builders of Iowa Workforce Oppor tunities Require Knowledge and Skills En dowment
MBI Submitting Member: Turner Construction MBI Supporting Members: SME Mechanical, Architectural Arts, The Waldinger Corporation Non Profits: Southeast Polk Community High School Pleasant Hill, Iowa Award: $30,000
Our goal is to expose students to updates and modernized CNC equipment in our Industrial Technology labs. Advanced metal students would have the opportunity to become HAAS certified. Our partnership with Turner Construction and it’s trade partners along with SME Mechanical, The Waldinger Corporation and Architectural Arts will allow us to implement several pieces for student engagement. With our MBI partners, we will engage students with Site Tours, Ask the Expert, Job Shadowing, Educate the Educator, and Leadership Activities. MBI Submitting Member: Portzen Construction MBI Supporting Member: Paulson Electric Non Profit: Northeast Iowa Community College Calmar, Iowa Award: $30,000
By utilizing TRANSFR’s VR Career Exploration simulations, NICC will offer a cost-effective solution to accurately portray construction job environments, on-the-job tasks (often prohibited to students for safety reasons) and outline pathways to students grades 7-12. VR headsets are portable with a builtin digital instructor, Simon, who coaches 1-on-1 through 26+ careers including construction, turning any classroom with wi-fi into an industry training facility. This removes the need to purchase industry supplies/equipment, matched academic CTE curriculum, and includes wraparound support such as staff onboarding training, ongoing technical support, and career placement/skills mastery tracking. MBI Submitting Member: McGough MBI Supporting Member: Elder Corporation Non Profits: iJAG (Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates) Statewide Award: $50,000
This project’s focus is to enhance iJAG’s commercial construction pathway by investing in: • Relationships: commercial construction representatives will visit iJAG classrooms across the state and share information about the industry including workplace culture, wages, skills required and available training. • Relevant Understanding: project-based learning will support hands-on skills building for commercial construction careers. Competency demonstrations and job visits will help students see how classroom skills will contribute to commercial construction careers. • Rigorous Experience: internships, pre-apprenticeships, certifications and on-the-job training will help students acquire critical skills directly related to commercial construction. MBI-WORKS operates as a charitable 501 (c)(3). MBI-WORKS has a Board of Directors who determines how earnings from the Endowment are allocated. Each year, the Endowment Board solicits proposals. The next round of funding is expected to open in the Summer of 2022 and you can check on our website for the RFP. 17

of Safety 20
Since 2012, WORKSAFE has been providing contractors an additional set of eyes on many construction sites throughout Iowa. The premise has always been to help coach contractors on safety with a greater emphasis on changing safety behaviors. As you know, MBI and Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. (CSSI) created a unique partnership with Iowa OSHA Consultation. No other state safety agency has this type of relationship with an industry construction group. Focused on providing a coaching perspective to job site safety, the safety professionals of CSSI and Iowa OSHA want to give contractors a comprehensive view on how to make their construction sites safer. This helps keep workers healthy, while reducing lost work hours and benefiting production.
1. All inspections shall be unannounced. All of the leadership within MBI and CSSI agree that to get a true sense of safety on a project, each inspection shall be unannounced. Obviously, CSSI safety professionals who are conducting audits will work with each client from a scheduling perspective to ensure that there is an active worksite. However, specific time and date parameters will no longer be requested. As is normally the case, OSHA Enforcement doesn’t provide a head’s up, so then it is in the interest of WORKSAFE clients for CSSI safety professionals to do the same.
meetings shall be conducted via Zoom. Recently, CSSI has done some kick-offs via Zoom and surprisingly, we have seen increased subcontractor participation.
3. Number of audits should align with
duration of the project. The MBI and CSSI Boards believe that the WORKSAFE banner should mean something and that the project takes safety to a higher standard. With this in mind, CSSI has put forth audit recommendations that follows a standard of one audit every other month during the construction phase.
Finally, in working with the Regents we are putting forth recommendations on the minimum threshold in which WORKSAFE applies to a respective project Currently, the threshold of $500,000 is the determining factor on whether a WORKSAFE requirement is included in the project’s contract documents. We are looking to increase that threshold, while also providing some guidance on the specific type of project. There are many instances in which a large proportion of a project’s cost is equipment and it did not make sense for a project like a Roof Top Unit replacement to be required to utilize WORKSAFE. We hope to have these new parameters finalized with the Regents very soon. Be it project-centric; company-centric; or employee-centric, MBI and CSSI are well prepared to be the best safety solution for Iowa’s construction industry. To learn more about the services offered through CSSI, please contact Joe Melton – CSSI’s Director of Operations. He and his team of safety professionals are well equipped to meet your safety and risk management needs.
SAFE
In the last 10 years there have been over 900 projects that have been enrolled in WORKSAFE. Though certain aspects of the program have changed during this time, the basic goal of creating a safety program that is project-centric has remained the same. As we move forward to our next decade of service to the Iowa construction industry, MBI and CSSI leadership are looking at ways to improve the service to better meet the needs of clients. Here is a list of initial changes:

FIRE SAFETY TIPS THROUGH THE EYES OF A FIREFIGHTER BY CHRIS PANKOW SAFETY CONSULTANT
Do you look around your office and wonder….Do I have a safe work zone? If we had a fire would I be able to get out? Would I be able to help others? Do I have a headcount on how many people are in my office? What if my only exit is blocked, how am I getting out? Or something as simple as asking myself what have I thrown away in my trash that could be dangerous or flammable? Do not let your trash and litter accumulate. A lot of people don’t think about what they are throwing away or putting in their trash. Some people freak out about recycling. What we should realize is that you can pose a fire hazard by not throwing your trash away properly. The batteries you throw away contain heavy metals. Now, let’s say you throw your favorite candy bar wrapper away that was wrapped in aluminum foil. Well, guess what you just did! If the foil in the wrapper contacts the positive and negative ends of a 9V or AA battery, it will create a circuit and flames could start. When throwing away boxes, paper, clothing, and other extremely flammable material, what was once a small fire is now an even bigger one! Everyone knows at least one person or more that has papers all over their desk and floor. In the right conditions, this will give the fire more fuel and will increase the odds of it spreading faster, and don't forget the clutter in the nearby exits and hallways will obstruct an escape from the fire. NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) states candles may be pretty to look at but they are a cause of an annual average of 90 deaths, 670 injuries, and $291 million in direct property damage. Another piece of information to think about is, on average, 3,340 office fires per year with 4 deaths, 44 injuries, and $112 million in property damage due to fires starting from holiday decorations. Keep your decorations away from lamps or any sources of heat. Always read the labels of those Christmas lights and look for the UL mark. Review manufacturer instructions to check if they are meant for inside or outside use only. When reusing lights from last year, carefully inspect the strands of lights. Check to make sure there are no missing or broken bulbs or frayed wires. Always run extension cords along the wall and never in a place that would cause a trip hazard. Do not run cords or cables under rugs or furniture or over metal studs. Avoid attaching multiple extension cords. Use a GFI outlet when applicable. When overloading plugs and sockets, with all the office electronics and extension cords added on, it can be the highest risk of fires in the office. Sometimes, in older buildings that are not wired for today’s electronics, people will run extension cords under desks and over metal, causing a pinch point. 22
Did you know phone chargers can overheat causing a fire hazard? Leaving them plugged in and sometimes laying on the floor, static electricity can cause them to catch fire. Any charger can catch fire, but most “knock-off” chargers are more susceptible to catching fire if they get hot enough.
Having machinery that overheats and spills flammable liquids next to the wrong chemicals can cause a fire. The lack of proper care or not caring about your space can cause a fire. When employees hurry, or try to complete a task faster than they should, accidents happen.
COVID…. what has it brought to the office space? Using household chemicals like bleach and ammonia to sanitize things can be a problem. What happens when you mix these two things? They can react! They give off a gas that irritates your eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Properly dispose of your cleaning products and rags separately from other trash.
Arson is more common than you think! The commercial and industrial businesses are the higher target areas because of all the chemicals and excess materials laying around. Sometimes, it is very easy for vandals to gain access. For prevention, one effective way is to secure your worksite against unauthorized personnel. Securing the site includes anything from blocking any unauthorized access to installing motion sensors and cameras.
Here are a few tips about electrical breaker boxes. The proper distance is 36 inches or 3 feet of clearance. Many workplaces combine signs with floor marking tape to make sure they keep the area clear. Maybe, a fan or a light causes a fire. The breaker box will need to be accessed. Make sure there is nothing heavy stored in front of it. Why should you have a fire drill? It is vital that everyone in the building knows and understands how to get out of the building! This ties into why you should have a sign-in and log-out sheet. Then, you will know who is in the building in case of an emergency. A fire drill will show you if there are objects that are in the way. Keeping your walkway and doorways clear of obstacles to help people exit the building more quickly and safely. Human error is frequently the cause of a fire. There are many types of fires that are not intentional. They call an accident an “accident” for a reason. Unfortunately, human error simply is carelessness, habituation, or not knowing how to use the equipment properly.
When doing fire drills, check your smoke detectors, fire doors, signage, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and all other fire safety equipment. Always make sure you have the right equipment and that the equipment is not faulty. Just remember, when a fire or emergency occurs, take a deep breath, and stay calm! If you panic, everyone else around you will panic, too! If one person can keep everyone calm and take control of the situation, when the emergency crews arrive on the scene they have someone to contact and make their best plan of action. They will then be able to work quicker. Some firemen often say, “your worst day is our best day.” If you would like a safety-walk around the office or help identifing workplace hazards, reach out to Chris Pankow, CSSI Safety Consultant at Chris@IowaCSSI.com, or call at 563-880-2582.

Your TRUSTED Advisors BY JOE MELTON DIRECTOR OF SAFETY SERVICES
CSSI has been the trusted advisor and preferred Safety Consultant services of MBI for over three decades, and recent additions in personnel have brought expanded knowledge, experience, and qualifications to the CSSI team. We are excited to broaden the scope of services and offerings in the pursuit of influencing and enhancing safety in Iowa beyond compliance. WHY a consultant? The obvious answer is a different set of eyes that have not become conditioned to the environment. We strive to provide a skilled and focused set of eyes. With a third-party perspective, comes education, knowledge, experience, and a point of view that sees what others are doing in the industry. This can be extremely beneficial for a project. At CSSI, we pride ourselves in attracting consultants that have industry experience, are in service to others, are professionals, and have a passion for enhancing cultures through positive safety interactions. WHO can benefit from a consultant? The traditional CSSI retainer has been those organizations that are too large to be small, but just small enough to not fully warrant a fully staffed professional safety department. In these situations, it is important to provide expert compliance, regulatory, and general safety advice to these retainer clients. 26
WHAT can CSSI offer for organizations that are larger with fully staffed professional safety departments? This is the exciting trajectory of the CSSI team and the recent additions to the team in the last 6 months have been attracting individuals with complementary skill sets. These additions in staffing and other partnerships have positioned CSSI as a consulting service for any sized organization. Larger organizations that have unique and specific needs can utilize the on-demand training and safety services. Here is just a sampling of the services CSSI can provide: • • • • • • • • • •
Vehicle/mobile trailer inspections Rigging equipment inspections Monthly crane inspections Fire prevention assessment General industry inspection Safety manual development/assessment Site orientation assessments Equipment operations evaluations Behavior-Based safety coaching observations Competent person fall protection equipment inspections • Competent person confined space • Competent person trenching and excavation • First Aid/CPR and AED certified trainers
With the recent elevation of Brandon Black to Senior Safety Consultant, CSSI is well-positioned to maintain the quality product our clients expect while ensuring consistency among our evergrowing roster of 5 full-time consultants and one part-time consultant. The additional staff has been strategically placed throughout the state, that includes one consultant in the west-central portion of the state to help serve our clients on the western side of the state. We divided the eastern portion of the state into the Cedar Valley/Dubuque and Iowa City/Quad Cities with both consultants covering Cedar Rapids. That leaves three full-time consultants to cover central Iowa. CSSI has never been this well-positioned to cover all of our clients' needs and job sites while reducing time spent behind the windshield to get there. We can maximize a clients' time purchased in the expertise they desire, rather than excessive windshield time. For those looking or didn’t know they were looking for specific skillset assistance, here is a quick historical breakdown of qualifications and experiences our staff now poses: • • • • • • • •
Certified EMT Qualified Crane Inspector Qualified Rigger and Signal Person Heavy Equipment Operators Heavy Highway, Bridge, and Culvert Inspector OSHA Compliance office (Washington state) Competent Person Confined Space Competent Person Trenching, Shoring and Excavation • IVES Equipment Trainer • Competent Person Fall Protection
Through partnerships, we now have access to specific task student simulation experience trailers: confined space, trenching and excavation, fall protection, and tower training. All of these services and experiences are in addition to the job-site inspections, 10/30hr construction and general industry training, IVES ™ equipment training, safety committee meetings, monthly/quarterly safety workshops, and OSHA compliance assistance. CSSI is excited to offer our summer safety service retainer specials starting May 1st for six months, 10 hours a month for $7,500. This is a great offer for those companies that have wanted to try the retainer but didn’t have the larger jobs until now, or due to their specific business type winter is a slower time and wasn’t sure on how they would utilize the hours. This can also be beneficial for those organizations with a full-time safety department looking for a different perspective and coverage in their more outward job site, or have recently seen a dramatic business growth and want added assistance in protecting your number one asset… your employees. To take advantage of one or more of the many service offerings, contact Joe Melton, CSSI Director of Operations at Joe@IowaCSSI.com or at 515-657-4403.

2022 WINTER CONFERENCE Education, Recognition, Networking and More!
38
BY TOM FULCHER DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
With the last “normal” MBI Annual Winter Conference two years in the rearview mirror, MBI changed venues, added additional booth space for vendors, and brought in industry expert and inspiring speakers from all over the county. These efforts proved to be the perfect recipe for an exciting and very well attended conference. The 2022 Annual Winter Conference was held February 28th – March 1st at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines and kicked off with two fairly new education concepts. First, employees of contractors and design firms gathered together in an interactive session titled Collaborative Virtual Design and Construction Strategies for Optimized Digital Project Delivery and worked hand-in hand toward learning how to deliver high-level projects. Concurrently, Dr. Jim Summers, delivered a breakout session specifically for members of MBI’s YBuilder Network who learned a great deal about the power of their personal and professional influence in a session titled Leadership in the
Commercial Construction Space-Maximizing Your Influence! Day one of the conference concluded with the popular Construction Industry Reception where attendees enjoyed visiting with over 80 exhibitors and networking with industry personnel from across the state. At the MBI Membership Meeting on Tuesday morning, new Board of Directors and Associate Council members were elected and the MB EYE on the Future graduating class was recognized. The winner of the Leadership in Workforce Recruitment Award was awarded for efforts in promoting the commercial construction industry as a viable and rewarding career option (for additional information, please go to page 44).
39
After a morning of excellent breakout sessions, attendees gathered for the Masters Award Luncheon where five individuals were presented with the coveted Master Builder Achievement Award for their efforts in education and professional development (for additional information, please go to page 43). After an exciting keynote message from best selling author and international leadership consultant Dan Clark titled BEING SIGNIFICANT IN YOUR SPACE - Mastering Excellence & Building a Legacy, it was time to recognize the finalist and winners of the 2022 Masters Awards. The awards were presented to The Hansen Company, Peters Construction Corp., and Neumann Brothers, Inc. (for additional information, please go to page 42). Following an afternoon of educational breakout sessions, guests attended the Build Iowa Dinner where keynote speaker and Iowa native, Chris Norton provide the audience with The Power to Stand! an emotional and motivating keynote message about handling adversity based on his ability to overcome a devastating football injury. Following Chris’ powerful message, Steve Skold with Skold Construction Services, was honored with the coveted Build Iowa Award, MBI's prestigious award that recognizes an individual for their lifelong work in the industry, within the Association, and in their community. (For additional information, please go to page 41). The final day of the conference included the Safety Awards Breakfast where Rodney Grieve delivered an educational and motivating keynote titled Identifying Cultural Hazards. Following Rodney’s message, individual and company safety awards were presented which included the Safety Champion Award, the Safety Professional Award as well as the Outstanding Company Safety Achievement Award in the categories of general contractor and specialty contractor (for additional information, please go to page 45). Following the Safety Awards Breakfast, the remainder of the conference included a total of 24 safety breakout sessions that included something for everyone from field workers to executives. 40

July 19 (MBI LIVE) 5S Your Way to a Cleaner, More Productive, and Safer Work Site If you enjoy a clean, well-organized job site (this also improves morale and productivity) but haven’t yet found a way to sustain this – you’ve come to the right place. Lean 5S, commonly referred to as workplace organization, is a foundational element in the Toyota Production System and a common starting point for Lean adoption. During this interactive session, attendees will learn what each of the five S’s mean and how to systematically apply each, one-byone. We will explain how to apply in the field, warehouse, and fab shop. The instruction will include plenty of relevant photos, testimonials, and tools – allowing you to be ready to experiment immediately. We’ll explore how to use 5S as part of visual controls (a.k.a. visual workplace, visual factory). The instruction will include simulations to show attendees firsthand how powerful 5S is. Most importantly, attendees will see how 5S leads to a safer workplace. In fact, some companies use 6S, where the sixth S is for safety. While our industry has made great progress to improve safety, there are few programs that manage to improve safety while also dramatically improving the flow, quality and speed of work…5S does it all!
