EDITOR'S THANK YOU! Yes you, the one holding this in your hands right now. It is because of you and your support for this magazine that we are still here. So, thank you! We most definitely do not take your support for granted. We do our absolute best each and every issue to inspire you, to educate you and to connect you to businesses here on the Sunshine Coast that may be relevant to you. We have a rule inside Matters Magazine: this issue must be better than the last. Trust me, that isn’t always easy to follow, but we give it our all each and every issue. We know that you want to support local wherever you can; we do too. We have a local designer, local proof-readers and editors, local printers, local content and, for the most part, local advertisers too. Sometimes I think the importance of gratitude isn’t fully understood. I personally have found that the more grateful that I am, the better I feel about my life. I learnt that gratitude wasn’t just a word to give lip-service, “I am grateful for…” listing all of the things I was grateful for like a robot, which I did for a while because I thought that was what I was supposed to do.

note I realised that I needed to actually FEEL gratitude and truly get in touch with the FEELING of my gratitude and remind myself in the moment of why I was grateful for the thing I was SAYING I was grateful for. I then took it a step further, actually imagining myself sending gratitude from my heart out to the person or the things, really feeling how having that person or thing in my life made such a difference to me. That is when I really started to feel more and more satisfied with my life, more and more overwhelmed by how fortunate I was. Soon, I was able to recognise and focus on the good things in my life more and more. Sure, the bad stuff was still there, I just taught myself to pay it less attention and pay more attention to practising FEELING my GRATITUDE for the good stuff.

Like the Pantene commercials would say, this doesn't happen overnight. But, like anything, the more you practise, the better you get. Then eventually, like driving a car, it becomes second nature.

MANIFEST

with gratitude BY VICKIE MAGIC

I know that you already know what I am about to say in this article. As a concept we know so many things, but as a practice we don’t always do what we know.

attention towards flowers (things you want). Just keep catching yourself when you are thinking about the problems, sharing the problems and focusing your attention towards the problems.

I have found through practice, over and over again, that the more grateful I am for my life and for the things in my life, the more I get to be grateful for.

Just keep refocusing your attention towards the flowers in your life, just keep reminding yourself of where you are going, of what you want, and of what you already do have that you love. The things you love, the people you love, anything that lights you up – be grateful for that. The truth is that you may actually struggle to find things you love to begin with – that’s how much we have trained ourself to water the weeds. It is our robotic way of being.

The more I focus on the good things that I already have, the more good things I seem to get. What we focus our attention on is what we get more of. Where focus goes, energy flows, and that is 100% fact. You may have already heard the garden analogy. In your garden (life) you have weeds (problems) and you have flowers (good stuff). Whichever of those two things you water (give attention to) is what grows the biggest. The thing we sometimes forget is that we are the ones with the hose. We choose whether we water the weeds or the flowers. As humans, we tend to water more weeds than flowers. The reality is that from birth, we are wired five times more towards looking for what’s wrong, than looking for what’s right. Five times more towards the negative, and that is fact. What is wrong with us? It really doesn’t make sense. Why would we give so much more attention to WHAT WE DON’T WANT? Are we crazy? Well, the truth is, yes, sometimes we are a little crazy. The truth is that if we don’t TRAIN OUR BRAIN to water the flowers, we will continue to water the WEEDS.

The first step towards change is to become AWARE.You must become AWARE that YOU ARE watering weeds. If you talk about a problem, if you share a problem, if you think about a problem, if you give a problem your attention, YOU ARE WATERING IT.

So, rather than water weeds, we must train ourselves to water flowers. I am not saying this is simple. It will take work and it will take practice. But it is most definitely possible. The next time you start talking about a problem, catch yourself. Remind yourself, “What you focus on grows” and ask yourself, “Do I want weeds? Or do I want flowers?” Remind yourself to focus your energy and

6 ISSUE 99

Of course, I am not saying that you IGNORE the weeds. If you simply ignore the weeds, they take over. So it is actually IMPERATIVE that you become AWARE OF THEM. That’s the first step. However, remind yourself that you are not the weed (the problem), you are simply the one AWARE of it. This is the best place to remove the weed. If you are simply the one aware of the weed, you can pull it out, but if you are the weed, well, that’s a whole other story, right?

So, remind yourself, YOU ARE NOT YOUR THOUGHTS, YOU ARE NOT YOUR FEELINGS, YOU ARE NOT THE WEED.You are simply the one that is the WITNESS OF YOUR THOUGHTS, THE WITNESS OF YOUR FEELINGS, THE WITNESS OF THE WEEDS, the one that is AWARE OF THEM. That way, you are in a much better viewpoint to pull them out, to problem-solve the weed removal. You must allocate WEED PULLING TIME – it must be a time when you allocate x minutes to simply brainstorm how you might pull that particular weed in order to refocus on the flowers. In the brainstorming weed pulling session, don’t give it too long. Say, “Okay, for the next 15 minutes I am going to weed-pull this scenario, work out all of the possible solutions to this weed. I am going to ask my friends, family, team, whoever, but from a viewpoint of weed pulling (problem-solving), not whining (criticising).” For just this 15 to 30 minutes, or whatever amount of time you allocate, you can talk about the weed, share about the weed and brainstorm the elimination of the weed. But once the weed pulling session is over, you must revert to watering the flowers. Check out my Wake-Up Club – weekday inspiration for a life filled with more flowers. www.vickiemagic.com.au/the-wake-up-club/ f www.vickiemagic.com.au

There are many options when it comes to cloud accounting. In Australia, the main players are Xero and MYOB online – however, which one you choose will depend on you and your business. What’s great about cloud accounting is the add-ons and apps available to assist you with running your business. It not only allows you to store invoices, but teaches you to only input the data once – no more losing or doubling up documents – they can all be filed within the online software. Side note: If you are currently running your business off your notebook, it may be time to invest in a second computer screen. As we move more and more into a paperless work environment, a second screen will increase efficiency as you can simply “drag and drop” a document when you have two or more screens.

THE SUNSHINE COAST –

better connected than ever WITH IAN ROBSON // SUNRISE INTERNET As a telecommunications carrier in 2021, we can at last see the Sunshine Coast and Noosa regions better connected than ever with over 400 kilometres of world class optic fibre ready to connect. At last, the connectivity of fibre can meet businesses, apartments, resorts and commercial estates without having to use the old copper or wireless. We are not referring to NBN. We are talking about real Gigabit performance without dropouts and congestion that are responsible for holding our regional economy back. This is all about offering reliability, high availability, zero congestion, competitive advantage, and world class standards. These high performing values are about half the price that they were pre-Covid, and they enable the region to address many challenges such as: • The migration of working from offices to regions. • The importance of performing a video conference call. • The critical value of uptime for EFTPOS, e-commerce, VoIP. • Using Cloud computing. • Enabling internet for the new Foxtel services. • Connecting 5G base stations. • Supporting the massive uptake of 4K TVs, media streaming, gaming and telemedicine.

• Feeding the power of the new WIFI 6 modems, designed to deliver gigabit internet around buildings, meeting the expectations of the tsunami of urbanites migrating to the region and holiday makers expecting proper internet. Now that the future is here, how do you go about upgrading higher value high-speed internet?

•D ealing with the higher volume of devices in use concurrently in dwellings and workplaces.

A free audit is a good start. Coverage is now huge and there are plenty of technologies to get ‘fibre speeds to the room’. m

• Enabling Apple updates and gaming.

Ian has worked across Australian telecommunications since deregulation in the 1990s as a Management Executive with multinationals Vodafone and Telstra and also as a pioneer in the launch of GSM and Fibre Networks. NEW HEALTH APP 14 DAYS FOR FREE

THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW…

TIPS FOR A SMOOTH HOME LOAN PROCESS

Is sedentary work affecting your health? Many businesses are trying varying strategies to combat negative health consequences of sedentary working environments. Increasingly, occupations require us to remain sedentary using technology for multiple consecutive hours. Stand-up-desks still leave us feeling stiff, sore and struggling to remain productive. Many people will spend 40 hours per week at work; a significant contributing factor to increased sedentary time if your occupation isn’t particularly physical. Small movement breaks throughout the day have profound positive physical and mental health benefits. Offit was founded because we want to make a positive difference to this growing number of people affected in Australia and globally. OFFIT is an app that encourages you to take movement breaks by sending notifications providing a simple exercise with a video and instructions. Exercises are office appropriate, based on your chosen body areas (e.g neck and lower back) and Offit tracks your progress.

…about Income Protection (before October 2021).

With record low rates, cashbacks and other incentives, lenders are extremely busy processing loan applications. Here are some things you can do to help your application along and minimise the chances of delays.

We are excited to provide a tool for individuals and companies who want to prioritise health and productivity while increasing comfort. Download the OFFIT app and enjoy a 14-day free trial. An ongoing subscription is just $2 per month. ca Offit Available at the app and play stores.

10 ISSUE 99

Income Protection is bleeding the insurance industry and the regulators are stepping in. Here’s what’s happened, what’s about to happen – and why it affects you: 1. Agreed value is gone, so you’ll need to prove your income when you go on claim – not when cover commences. You can’t be better off on claim than at work. 2. T hree-tiered disability definitions are going… and while that might sound a little technical, simplified, it means it’ll be harder for you to prove you’re not capable of working. 3. G uaranteed renewability will be history. With details yet to be finalised – what we expect is that every five years, insurers will need to re-underwrite income and occupation for the insured. It may pay to be across what’s coming and ensure you have access to what’s available now, if these features are relevant to you. ca

Be organised. Get all of your documentation, identification and other details ready. Be upfront with information. Provide all the necessary documents upfront and convey as much detail as possible about your financial position. Get preapproval. Houses are selling fast! We suggest getting preapproval so that when you’re ready you can put in an offer. Reduce or eliminate other debts and excess expenses. The simpler these are to verify, the smoother the application process. Every application is unique, so the best approach is to act early and be prepared! Doing all of this on your own can be daunting. The best part is, we as Mortgage Brokers are here to walk you through the process, answer your questions, collect what’s required and find you a great deal on your finance. We’re here to help. ca

THANK YOU!

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU!

Being in the historic heart of Yandina, we have a lot for which we are grateful. Viewing magnificent Mount Ninderry every day, we have a constant reminder of the tens of thousands of years of custodianship the first nations peoples exercised in this beautiful part of the globe. We owe them everything for what we have today.

Infectious Clothing Company owners Sally and Peter Doran have been overwhelmed by what has happened over the last 14 months with the worldwide pandemic.

Our early settler history is on constant display, from the historic photos and plaques scattered throughout the business district to the still standing facades of shops and businesses. To those pioneers, we are eternally in debt. Our recent Anzac Day ceremony at the memorial is probably the best example of why we need to diligently remember what others before us have given to allow us to live our lives. In our own small business, a portrait of Brian Curry, the founder of Yandina Art and Framing over 25 years ago, points to the enduring values that we live by in our offer of services. Finally, to our loyal (and at times, patient) customers, we simply say, “Thank You”. ca

They wanted to take a moment to thank the heath care workers for the outstanding work they have done during this pandemic, not only here in Australia, but all over the world. They know that for some of the healthcare workers, there has been no break from this pandemic. They also would like to take a moment to thank every member of their team, all of whom have worked tirelessly during the pandemic to keep up with demand of supplying corporate uniforms, clinical uniforms and medical scrubs, both plain and branded, including the very popular fun cartoon and holiday printed scrubs, and footwear. Last, but not least, they would like to say THANK YOU to their customers for their ongoing support. ca

WHY? WHY NOT?

WINTER GET AWAY

WHY? WHY NOT? These simple questions can pack a punch when it comes to business decisions and strategy. We ask it often with our clients at Brilliance for Business.

Just a short car trip away, Misty View offers a romantic getaway second to none. You work hard, so maybe it’s time to take yourself away on a little couple’s retreat for two. Get back that spark that busyness sometimes fades.

Some real-life examples of how we’ve used these questions: • We are thinking about starting a new arm of the business. Why? •W e can’t increase our prices – our customers just won’t pay that. Why not? •W e want to take time out from the business and travel in a couple of years. Why not now? • We can’t find good staff. Why? If you find it hard to answer the ‘why’ or ‘why not’, then there might be more to it that’s worth brainstorming. Why or why not can be really powerful tools in any entrepreneur’s toolbox. I challenge you next time you need to make a decision, big or small, to use these questions to help flesh out the challenges or opportunities behind it. ca

BUILDING INDUSTRY DISPUTES The building and construction industry in Queensland can be complicated to navigate as it is highly regulated. At Klein Legal, we see first-hand the type of disputes that frequently arise within the industry and what could have been done to avoid them. Disputes can arise between a number of different parties including building owners / homeowners, building contractors, subcontractors and third parties. Disputes we regularly see arise within the industry relate to building defects, late completion or non-completion of works, variations, property damage and retentions. Defects are often the centre of building disputes and may cause issues such as non-payment. Defects can be structural or non-structural (aka minor defects). What is a defect and whether it is structural or minor can be a contentious issue between parties. By engaging a building and construction lawyer, disputes can be avoided or at least effectively managed. If you need a building and construction lawyer, contact us at Klein Legal today. ca This is general information only and does not constitute legal advice and should not be relied on as such.

C R E AT I V E B I R D D E S I G N

WHAT'S IN a logo? Everything is in a logo. Since your branding is the first thing customers will see, you want to make sure you get it right. It’s the cornerstone of your company and must convey your business in the marketplace in a short moment of time.

MASCOTS A mascot is simply an illustrated character that represents your company. Think of them as the ambassador for your business. They are a great way of incorporating personality into your brand, like KFC’s Colonel. Companies that want to create a wholesome atmosphere by appealing to families and children often use mascots as their branding solution.

By engaging the skills of a professional designer, those ideas will be translated into a successful business brand. Think about this yourself; a logo makes you instantly feel attracted to a service or a product, or instantly repelled. It is imperative that your brand attracts. A great, professional logo design not only has the power to communicate what you stand for but will also make a good first impression and help you stand out in a crowded marketplace. Here are some design styles to start the process:

COMBINATION MARKS

LETTERMARKS (OR MONOGRAM LOGOS)

A combination mark is exactly that – a combination of both wordmark or lettermark and a pictorial mark, abstract mark, or mascot. The brand name is either placed next to the symbol, or is incorporated in the graphic element, like Burger King and Doritos. With a combination mark, people will begin to associate your name with your pictorial mark or mascot right away!

Lettermark logos are a great solution if your company name is very long or hard to remember. Many businesses choose to go by their initials, like IBM, CNN or H&M. These monograms can be great for minimalist logos as initials have been turned into brand-identification marks, but they are not always ideal at expressing what your business is about. WORDMARKS (OR LOGOTYPES) Similar to lettermarks, wordmark logos focus entirely on the business’ name, and is solely font-based – think Coca-Cola, Visa. When strong typography is mixed with a distinct and memorable name, like Google, then you have a logo that has strong brand recognition. PICTORIAL MARKS (OR LOGO SYMBOLS) This is what we would usually perceive as a ‘logo’. They are iconographic images that are easily recognisable and represent your brand with an image, for example, Apple, Twitter, Nike. These logos are so emblematic and well established, that the mark itself is instantly recognisable on its own. ABSTRACT LOGO MARKS Instead of an easily recognised symbol, abstract logo marks are geometric forms that don’t establish an immediate connection to an existing image but create something entirely unique for your brand. BP, Adidas and Pepsi are great examples of an abstract logo mark.

THE EMBLEM LOGO Similar to combination marks, emblem logos are also often a combination of word and pictorial elements. They usually consist of text integrated in a symbol or icon, such as a badge, seal or crest. Harley Davidson and Starbucks are great examples. They tend to be more traditional in style, highly detailed, and can have a striking impact.

There is a logo type style for any business out there. Whether it’s versatility, personality or a highly unique solution, it just takes some brainstorming and creativity to create a stand-out brand for your business. So, get in touch for a free consultation and let’s create a brand that stands out from the competition. ca www.creativebirddesign.com

But for plumbing apprentice Travis Hamilton, it was this common household problem that was the inspiration behind his career choice. “I can remember we had an issue with a busted water pipe at our house, and a family friend of ours came out to fix it,” Travis said. “I just remember being really interested in what he was doing and wanting to know how to do it myself, so I decided to follow through with that.” Keen to learn more and confirm whether plumbing was the right choice for him, Travis seized the opportunity to get a head-start on his career while he was in year 11 by enrolling in a Certificate II in Plumbing (52700WA) through TAFE Queensland’s TAFE at School program. The course saw Travis swap one day of school a week for a year to attend class at the Sunshine Coast Trade Training Centre in order to gain his qualification, in addition to undertaking 50 hours of work experience with industry during his school holidays. “I liked that I was able to get experience in the field to test out whether I wanted to commit to it, while gaining a qualification that

14 ISSUE 99

would help me enter the industry if I did like it,” Travis said. “I did work experience in maintenance and thought that was pretty cool, but then I did work experience in residential and it opened my mind to an area I’d never really considered.” Travis’s eagerness to learn and his commitment to the trade impressed his work experience provider, so when he came to them asking for labourer work and eventually an apprenticeship, they had no hesitation. Now, the 19-year-old is about to head into the third year of his apprenticeship with Beutel Plumbing and undertakes block training at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus, where he enjoys the hands-on learning opportunities. “I love the environment – it’s so different to school in that we’re treated like adults. We just get in and do what we have to do to get the job done,” Travis said. Travis now plans to one day start a business of his own in the industry,

but for now he’s enthusiastic to complete his qualification and lay the groundwork for his career. While Travis’s pathway into plumbing began via the TAFE at School program, the Certificate II in Plumbing (52700WA) is also available as a pre-vocational course, which provides members of the general public with the chance to gain foundational knowledge and skills they need to kick-start an apprenticeship with confidence and make themselves more appealing to employers. What’s more, the Certificate II in Plumbing (52700WA) is now free for eligible Queenslanders under JobTrainer – a Federal and State Government funding initiative. TAFE Queensland General Manager (East Coast region) Ana Rodger said JobTrainer has made training more affordable than ever. “In the wake of the building grants introduced to support the construction industry during COVID-19, employment opportunities in building infrastructure services like

plumbing are anticipated to grow by 8.4 per cent over the next five years,” she said. “JobTrainer funding assists eligible school leavers and job seekers in entering high priority skills areas like construction, by enabling them to complete selected qualifications for free or low cost.” Whether you’re in school and looking to get a head-start, or you are looking for a new career and think plumbing might be the path for you, Travis encouraged those

interested to make the most of the vocational preparation courses available and sample the industry before they take the plunge. “Gaining that experience in the field before you jump in is so important, because it gives you the chance to check it’s the right industry for you, as well as grow your confidence by building your skills,” Travis said.

To find out more about TAFE Queensland’s TAFE at Schools program, pre-vocational courses or funding options, visit tafeqld.edu.au or call 1300 308 233.

“If you do that and you enjoy it, and someone offers you an apprenticeship, I’d say grab it with both hands.” RTO 0275 CRICOS 03020E

JEAN SHEEHAN

THANK YOU

is the cure

WITH JEAN SHEEHAN // MILLENNIUM EDUCATION It was day seven of eight at the Medical Intuitive course I was teaching when my doctor client had a huge breakthrough. Tears rolled down her face. She fell to the ground and kept saying “Sorry!” She was sorry for not listening to her patients. Sorry for not giving time to her mum. Sorry for taking her friends and family for granted. You see, she had come to heal her skin cancer as she knew there was an emotional attachment. Medical Intuition was how she was able to break though. The ‘cure’ healing for the word ‘Sorry’ is ‘Thank you’. Here is the advice I gave her: “The body thrives on thank you. Just swap your words and allow your health to be your wealth and then you can prosper in life.” 1. I’m sorry I’m late – Thank you for waiting for me. 2. I’m sorry I made a mistake – Thank you for accepting me.

3. I’m sorry for being emotional – Thank you for loving me. 4. I’m sorry that I have been distant – Thank you for being understanding. True health for the body is never being sorry for who you are. Never having to feel guilty for who you are. When you say sorry, you are creating disease in your body. The emotion attached is guilt, which is held in the skin. There is no need to feel guilty. Life is about being aware of what you are doing and how it makes you and others feel too. So, from now on say, “Thank you”. Thank you to family, clients, pets, the universe and even your enemies. When life throws ‘stuff’ at you say, “Thank you!” Remember, the universe is offering an opportunity for you to shine your brilliance. Lastly, thank you for being you, as you are absolute love.

Thank you for reading this. www.millenniumeducation.com

ARE YOU PERFORMING

at your best?

WITH DR DAVID HENDREY, CHIROPRACTOR // HENDREY CHIROPRACTIC We all want to live a healthy, happy life. One of the essentials to live our best life is to have our health and wellbeing at a great level. A healthy mind and a healthy body. Just like regular exercise, regularly using our brain is fundamental. We need the right amount of load to improve. Too little and we don’t get the training effect, too much and we are overloaded. Whether it’s a physical load or a mental load, the result is the same. How do we know if we are pushing ourselves the right amount? In the past, we would have to look out for the signs of fatigue and loss of performance. Often only correcting the error of our ways after we have pushed too far or for too long. Our autonomic nervous system is amazing. It can process an extraordinary amount of information effortlessly. Controlling the ‘automatic’ innerworkings of the body without our conscious mind even being aware. One of the most exciting advancements in modern science is

the ability to measure our autonomic adaption via Heart Rate Variability or HRV. Changes in our HRV can tell us if we are coping well with a certain physical and mental load or it is time take the necessary steps to rebalance your nervous system. After all, it is not what happens to us that is important, but how we respond. Chiropractors have been focused on the nervous system and the relationship to health and wellbeing since 1895. This new technology allows us to serve our clients much better. This powerful test gives us a window into the inner adaption of the nervous system.

A regular check of your HRV enables you to know when to implement specific strategies to raise your health and performance. m www.hendreychiropractic.com.au

THE REAL REASONS

you have no cash

ow you generate revenue (how many •H customers, average spend, etc).

Are you sick of worrying about paying your bills and still having enough money to pay your GST and tax?

ou aren’t making enough profit (note 1. Y there is a difference between profit and cash).

This is a common complaint from small business owners who universally find lack of cash to be one of the toughest issues to overcome.

2. You aren’t collecting the cash owed to you.

ow much are your COGS or Direct Costs •H (in percentages).

3. You are taking too much money out of the business for yourself.

ow much do you spend on variable and •H non-variable overheads (in percentages).

4. Y ou don’t have enough working capital in the business.

This will let you prove that your business is or can be profitable and is also scalable. Sometimes it will point out glaring issues in your business, prompting you to make changes and tweak things until they work. Ultimately it will help ensure you have adequate profit to achieve a healthy cash flow.

Cash flow budgets are a fantastic tool that we love and recommend you use, but they only help manage the problem; they rarely fix anything. If you aren’t working on addressing the real underlying problem, your business will continue to suffer, regardless of how well you manage your cash. If you have problems with a lack of cash, it’s because there is a deeper issue that needs addressing. Something isn’t right in your business and once you find out what that is and fix it, your cash flow problems will disappear. Think about it this way - being short of cash isn’t actually the problem, it’s a symptom caused by the real problem. Most of the time, insufficient cash happens for at least one of the following reasons:

26 ISSUE 99

In businesses that carry stock, there is a fifth reason: ou are holding too much stock (think of 5. Y your stock as $50 notes on your shelves). I guarantee that these are the real underlying problems in your business. Each of them can result in having a lack of cash, and it doesn’t matter how well you plan your cashflow – until you identify why it’s being restricted, it will never be any better. Let’s talk about what you need to do. 1. E xamine your business model. Your business model is a short and simple document that demonstrates how your business can make profit. It covers the following:

2. Systemise and automate Accounts Receivable. There are some great software apps that will link with your accounting software to automate the reminder and collection process. They have proven to be effective, especially in reminding customers when they must pay and then following up immediately after payment is due. You should always monitor your accounts payable, even when you have an automated

system in place. You must also have procedures that dictate what action you will take in the event of someone not paying. 3. Review your personal budget. Assuming you have a personal budget, it is a simple way to work out how much money you need to withdraw from the business. You need to know how much profit your business needs to generate to provide you with the lifestyle you desire. Compare that figure to your business model and budget/forecast. Is there a shortfall? If you absolutely need to withdraw $150,000 to live and your business is currently producing $120,000, you are going to have a cash issue. 4. Working Capital. This can be a little tricky, but a working capital shortfall just means that you don’t have enough money held in the business to fund your business cycle. Many of you need to buy stock or materials well in advance of your customers paying for them – these purchases are funded from working capital. In a startup business, working capital has to be contributed by the owner depositing $100,000, for example, into the bank account to pay for things until funds roll in. For an established business, working capital is usually profit that has been retained from previous years.

A growing business needs an increasing amount of working capital. Look at the working capital cycle of your business to work out if you are lacking working capital. A vast number of Australian small businesses are under capitalised and it is a huge cause of cash shortages. 5. Analyze Stock Turnover. How long is it taking to turnover your current stock? Your Inventory Turnover (how many times stock is bought and sold in a period of time) should be as high as possible. In many cases, we find that the business is carrying too much stock and it sits on the shelf far too long. Your skill as a business owner needs to be deciding what stock you really need without compromising other factors such as store presentation or order fulfilment.

Now is the perfect time to fix your cash flow problems and leave the stress of not being able to pay bills behind. Make a plan to look at each of the above issues and come up with ideas about how you can implement change. a www.evolveaa.com.au

CYBER SAFE

education Phishing is a huge challenge for all businesses and one that is becoming increasingly important to provide education on. Phishing is when fake communications are sent by criminals that have the appearance of being messages from a real business. Phishers create fraudulent links that ultimately give them access to the IT systems of your business if an unsuspecting employee clicks on them. They are increasingly doing this through carefully crafted copies of well-known and respected businesses and institutions, such as banks. Educating your team about cyber safe practices is essential in order for them to recognise a phishing email. This education should be ongoing as the challenge facing many

is the rate at which criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their approach. Akamai Technologies head of security technology Fernando Serto says they have seen phishing campaigns that use social media and other methods to try to lure individuals. “(Once they) click on a malicious link, they compromise a work device,” he says. So it’s important to create an open, honest and transparent communication channel between staff and the IT security team. This enables the business to explain to teams why being phishing-aware is important and to let them know when new scams emerge. ca Please be aware that any advice offered is General Advice only and has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. MONEY MINDSET

magic

I've worked with tens of thousands of women from around the world, most of them switched-on, intelligent, hardworking entrepreneurs who are doing their best to create a business they're passionate about and a lifestyle they love. But they come to me because they're searching for a better way. They're working hard, putting in the hours, offering new products or services, building an audience, posting on social media – they're 'doing all the doing', but still not creating the income they desire. The problem is they're not working on the one thing that will help them create the success they're seeking... their money mindset. And that's my speciality. I know what it's like to be a struggling entrepreneur, because after years of trying to make my swimwear business work, I was

$100,000 in debt and on welfare. I couldn't understand why things never worked out for me. When I discovered the Law of Attraction, I realised I was only focusing on what was going wrong, which made me attract more of it. So I did whatever it took to rewire my mind using cutting edge brain technology and ancient secrets, which empowered me to attract what I desired into my life. I went from welfare to millionaire and love nothing more than seeing my clients transform their money mindset, which changes their actions and their outcomes, and suddenly they easily start attacting opportunities, clients, money and more success. If you'd love more prosperity in your life, work on your mindset first – I promise you'll be amazed at the magic you create. ca

Let’s keep our focus local. Supporting Sunshine Coast products and services really does make a difference. Next time you are looking to buy ANY product or service, remember SUPPORTING LOCAL MATTERS.

DO YOU THANK YOUR BODY? “I wonder, when was the last time you thanked your body?” This is a question I often ask clients.

Our bodies are a work of magic.

Many of my clients, especially women, have all sorts of thoughts, feelings, judgements and criticisms about their bodies. After all, that is how we are conditioned.

miracles. Imagine if we began to treat them as

They are a collection of ‘moment to moment’ such? Imagine if we really appreciated every little thing they enabled us to Be, Do and Have? How might we treat them differently then? ca

They know their size. They know their weight. They know how it measures up compared to the next woman, or how they wish it would. However, rarely, if ever, do they stop to appreciate all it does for them and has done for them right from the moment of their conception. Even if their body has seemingly failed in some way, it has still enabled them to experience this life. It has enabled them to love. To be loved. To live independently. To taste. To smell. To see. To feel. To hear.

BEING INVOLVED IN A CHARITY OR

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION CAN BE

GOOD FOR YOUR BUSINESS WITH VICTORIA BERRY

Charities and Community Organisations are always screaming out for help. I have been involved in many Organisations over the past 30 years, most notably Surf Life Saving, children’s soccer and most recently the Sunshine Coast Chamber Music Festival. A lot of the opportunities stem from being pushed out of your comfort zone. Some roles seem like a natural fit, such as an accountant being the treasurer, but others are a little left field, such as a board member on a Music Festival when I know absolutely zero about chamber music! Every role gives you an opportunity to learn, to grow as a person and by default, to pass on these learnings to your business. Some of the learnings to be found include:

Ultimately, community service is a life-long education and it’s something I’ve encouraged my kids to be involved with as well. I love the boards I’m involved with and am grateful for the ongoing opportunities provided to me to continue my personal growth. So what’s stopping you? ca

USE THE RIGHT

PROFESSIONAL FOR THE RIGHT JOB DIY is all the rage and in a lot of cases you can save yourself a bucketload of cash by doing things yourself. I’m all for DIY and keeping costs down, but we’ve come across a few instances lately where people haven’t used the right professional for the job and it’s come back to bite them: 1. A client, let’s call her Jane, decided she wanted to save costs and not use a Registered ASIC agent for her company. That’s fine, we get it. About five years ago, the client moved house and didn’t update the change of address with ASIC. This meant she didn’t receive her annual ASIC invoices and didn’t pay her renewal fee for five years! ASIC deregistered her company. The first she knew of it, a customer called saying they couldn’t work for them anymore as their ABN had been cancelled. (When a company is deregistered, the ABN is automatically cancelled). Jane contacted ASIC to organise to pay the fees and late fees which totaled well over $1500, and ASIC then took up to three months to re-register the company. In the meantime, she missed out on two JobKeeper payments and could not work as their ABN would not be reinstated until the company was re-registered. Hindsight is beautiful, but if she used an ASIC agent, she would have known about the change of address and would have received the renewal paperwork on the client’s behalf, saving them all this heartache.

2. Another client, let’s call him Mark, had his financial planner set up a new company and trust for him. The financial planner didn’t apply for a TFN or an ABN for these entities. The first we heard about it was when Mark called us for the ABN and the bank was asking for it. We didn’t set it up and didn’t know these even existed. At HBA Encompass, we work with your other advisors to achieve the right outcome for you. Our goal is to stay in the loop of what you are doing to ensure that all the tax/ASIC compliance is completed and all advisors know what is going on and who is responsible for what. It’s the best result for our client, every time.

Soon enough it’ll be time to say goodbye to our current home at the Kon-Tiki Centre in Maroochydore, and hello to the NEW Vitality Village, coming soon to Birtinya. The Vitality Village is Australia’s first health and wellness super incubator which aims to disrupt the health sector, deliver substantial savings to the national health budget and achieve better outcomes for Australians facing complex health challenges. A FEW OF MY

favourite things WITH ANTONIO PUELMA // SEE RESTAURANT Smell and feel the southerly air, watch the thermometer fall and yes finally get them winter woollies out to air. With winter rapidly approaching and the new border bubble open to travel across the Atlantic, I want to take you to an amazing place where snow bunnies, adventure seekers and foodies alike can’t resist. Of course, I am referring to Queenstown. Nestled amongst the Valley of the Giants, this place amazes you from the minute you fly in through the mountains and the wind eddies giving you slight worry. Or if you are driving in, Arthur’s Pass can challenge your driving abilities. Nevertheless, it is not how you get there, but how amazing it is when you arrive. That’s enough of the amazing snow and wonderful vistas. Let’s talk about food. Everywhere is exceptional and the quality of the produce exceeds its reputation. There is a lot of pride amongst Queenstown restaurant owners, and all claim to have the best. They are most likely right, as

we truly have enjoyed every meal that we have had there over the years. But there is one place that we always go back to - Fergburger. This world-recognised burger joint is amazing. Nested in the middle of town, it’s a place you can’t miss. Not because of the character of the building, but the line-up of clients trying to get a hold of a bit of this bun paradise is constant. The atmosphere that this place radiates draws you in like a giant magnet, and once you are in, the cold beer flows and it’s noisy and busy. Before you even know it, the gates to burger heaven open. My favourite arrives, the Big Al. Here’s my order: Big Al $18.90 - Al delivers a double serving of prime

New Zealand beef (3/4lbs), lashings of bacon, a whole lot of cheese, two eggs, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, red onion, relish and a big wad of aioli. You can’t go past ordering sides – salt and pepper squid $9.50, hand-cut salt and pepper squid with wasabi mayonnaise – $8.90. Did I finish it? Of course I did… and three pints of Heineken!

Not a matter of if, but when you are in Queenstown, Fergburger is a must visit. I would like to take the opportunity to say “Thank you” to the Magic team for their ongoing support to our business and providing a magazine that MATTERS. ca

Owner of the beautiful See Restaurant at Mooloolaba, Chilean-born Antonio is a massive fan of food with flavour and travels around to world to find the best flavours. 4 smart ways to take advantage of software 1

Improve your communication with CRM software

2

Modernise your sales with digital proposals

3

Know your numbers with business dashboards

4

Automate your shipping with courier integrations

Customer relationship management tools allow you keep track of where each customer is up to (e.g. initial contact, waiting for quote), what communication has happened with them, and when you need to follow up. You can use the software to plan an ideal customer experience and ensure your team consistently delivers it, or help to prevent customers from slipping through the cracks.

If your business sends a lot of quotes or proposals, digital proposals can make this faster and more professional. You can set up professionally designed templates, and use them to generate detailed proposals in a matter of minutes. They can also be interactive, such as letting the customer select different package options, allowing them to sign electronically, and automatically invoicing them.

Would you like to track how your business is travelling, and easily monitor areas like sales figures, popular products, or staff performance? Business intelligence software can automatically collect and collate the raw data from your systems, and turn it into interactive graphs and reports on your own personal dashboard. Data is automatically kept up to date, so you always have an accurate picture.

If your business ships a lot of items, using tools that integrate with couriers can save you significant amounts of time and labour. Order and product data can automatically flow into shipping software, where it can be used to quickly generate or compare rates from multiple couriers. Once you’re ready to dispatch, you can book in the job, print shipping labels, and send tracking with a couple of clicks.

Streamline your business with technology Hello, my name is Matt, and I’m a business technology consultant. I work with Sunshine Coast businesses to make them easier to manage, more efficient, and more profitable. Sometimes all you need is an outside perspective to show you what’s possible. If you’d like to find out where technology might be able to help your business, give me a call or book a free on-site consultation.

DI HENSHALL INTERIOR DESIGN

INTERNATIONAL INTERIOR

design of the year

WITH DI HENSHALL // DI HENSHALL INTERIOR DESIGN Every so often we are reminded about how many talented and creative people we have living in our beautiful area. One of these people is Di Henshall, one of Australia’s most industry-decorated interior designers. Di has been honoured with over 50 awards including International Interior Design of the Year, for a stunning house that she co-designed in Queenstown, New Zealand. The client’s brief was to create “the best house in New Zealand” and it seems that many people think she achieved this, as the house was also awarded House of the Year at the TIIDA Awards in New Zealand. Drawing inspiration from iconic buildings on the other side of the world is one thing, but translating this into practical and beautiful projects back in Australia is where the magic begins. “Every project is totally different to the last, every client wants me to translate their desires into their reality, not to enforce a certain style or my own ego into their home or office or restaurant, but to still challenge their boundaries and stretch their imagination” says Di. Di and her team work all over the country and abroad, designing and outfitting diverse projects such as wineries, heritage-listed buildings, restaurants, private residences, offices and apartments. Design can totally furnish a home, from top to bottom, or add some beautiful pieces to enhance existing furnishings. Di Henshall’s passion and enormous knowledge of all things interior design stands her apart. The last few years have found her on five international architecture and interior design tours, taking her worldwide, including Iceland and South Africa. Although Di’s international travels have been suspended in the last year, she still finds inspiration right here at home. Living in a stunning place such as Noosa, it is easy to see beauty everywhere. Di recently travelled throughout Adelaide and the surrounding countryside, visiting historic homesteads and architectural wonders such as the Adelaide Oval precinct, with its world-class design and construction. Although Di’s practice is housed in an imposing concrete building in Gateway Drive Noosaville (which she won Commercial Design of the Year for), the studio inside has an immediate sense of welcome and reassurance that you’re in a safe haven, where your thoughts will be heard and adventures begin. Di and her team constantly strive to produce beautiful dwellings that become the joy and pride of their clients. ca www.dihenshall.com.au

The four-wheel-drive transmission specialist! Call us / 07 5443 4444 Like us / @ronhillauto Visit us / www.ronhillautomatics.com.au 48 ISSUE 99

ALL ABOUT TOWING! Last month we participated at one of the largest outdoor adventure events in the region, the South Queensland Caravan, Camping, Fishing and 4×4 Expo. It was our first ever big promotion for Ron Hill Automatics and is continuing to be a huge success – the bookings, website activity and Facebook likes keep on rolling in. As I was putting this article together, Les, a customer from Gympie who saw us at the show, has picked up his Isuzu after a transmission cooler upgrade. We have been asked why we participated in the show since our business attends to repairing automatic transmissions? The answer is towing. This event was filled with caravans that are towed with a four-wheel drive and usually an automatic. Without a doubt, Australia is one of the most amazing countries to explore. Full of natural wonders, unique wildlife and dazzling beaches. What better way is there to explore this country, than cruising at your own pace with your four-wheel drive towing a caravan? You may be under the assumption that the modern fourwheel drive is ready to do the big trip around Australia, but when you tow or partake in heavy four-wheel driving, the demands on your transmission change. Transmission cooling upgrades are a necessity to reduce the running temperatures of the transmission. The removal of the factory heat exchanger (Rangers / BT50s), the fitment of an air/oil cooler behind the vehicle grille is the key. This achieves a healthy operating transmission temperature to sit below 80 degrees. The general rule is – for every 20 degrees cooler, the life expectancy of your vehicle’s transmission is doubled. Customers that tow are sharing with us that they are seeing the transmission temperature drop to between 15 to 30 degrees after these upgrades.

series, particularly when towing. Owners are noticing a shifting issue with the transmission. At highway speed, any movement of the accelerator or even the slightest incline on the road puts the transmission into confusion where it cannot make its mind up which gear to be in. The torque converter is locking and UN-locking, causing the revs to increase and decrease constantly. This action has a major effect on fuel economy, and the constant locking and unlocking of the torque converter creates heat in the transmission. When the lockup control switch is fitted, it will allow you to override the computer and apply the lockup clutch manually. This reduces the heat generation, and if a temperature gauge is fitted, you should see the transmission temperature drop quickly once applied. A broad range of four-wheel drives benefit from a Valve Body Upgrade. The valve body is the brain and heart of an automatic transmission. When a manufacturer designs a transmission, they go to great lengths to make sure the gear shifts smoothly and comfortably, as that is what the general consumer expects. Soft shifts are okay for light duty and normal day-to-day use in built-up areas. When you tow a heavy caravan or trailer and go four wheel driving, the demands on the transmission change, as it is now under load. For increased load, the shift duration ideally needs to be shortened to reduce clutch slippage and heat build-up within the clutch packs. We highly recommend this upgrade be carried out in conjunction with any engine performance improvements. As engine tunes alter the torque curve, they often adversely affect transmission behaviour and shift quality. With our upgrades, you can be sure your automatic transmission does not become the weakest link.

The most common question we were asked at the show was – why is my 200 Series slipping all the time between fifth and sixth gear?

If you are keen to see what nomad family life is all about and are planning your own dream trip around Australia, then we have some tips to help you get started and hit the wide open road.

THE IRON

tiger

Iron is a vital mineral for human beings, so essential for life that a slight variation from optimal range can affect almost every aspect of health, including growth, immunity,

energy and even the body’s natural detoxification process. Ironically, iron is also toxic. It is crucial, therefore, not only to consume adequate quantities of dietary iron, but to also ensure that

all iron consumed can be tightly bound, handled and transported without harming sensitive tissues or damaging the immune system.

Imagine iron is like a tiger. Just as tigers are strong, iron is needed for might and vigour. A tiger on the loose, however, is dangerous. So too, is iron. When serum iron levels are mismanaged, the groundwork is set for degenerative disease and infection. An altered iron status may underlie many health conditions from anaemia to cancer. Yet we can coexist with both tigers and iron when they are properly managed.

the ferritin molecule (the cage) to release iron (Fe2+) ions (the tigers) by changing them into ferric (Fe3+) ions. They are still tigers. The release of stored iron can be compromised if the diet is low in copper and protein.

storage, handling and transportation. When dietary protein is inadequate, the body will either urinate iron out or face the risk of a destructive assault by free unbound iron.

Meat, fish, poultry, eggs and certain plantbased foods contain significant levels of dietary iron. When these foods are consumed, the digestive system treats iron, like a zookeeper treats his tigers. The iron is carefully bound, then caged in holding cells called ferritin. Each spherical ferritin molecule can hold 4500 iron ions, separated by protein partitions. Ferritin molecules are usually made up of 63% protein and 27% iron. If the iron levels exceed 27%, the molecules go out of shape. Imagine cage-bars becoming bent by too many tigers fighting within.

Once free in the bloodstream, ferric ions are bound to proteins, called transferrin (the transporters), to be transported to sites expressing receptors. These receptor sites are plentiful when iron is in short supply and suppressed when iron supplies are ample. Each transferrin molecule has two binding sites (hooks) that make it capable of securing two ions of iron for safe transport. Just as it is dangerous to have tigers escape during transport, free or unbound iron ions would harm sensitive tissues, while promoting harmful bacterial growth and cancer cell proliferation.

This irregularity promotes inflammation. It occurs in those whose protein intake is so inadequate that the body is unable to make sufficient ferritin molecules. Subsequently, the available ferritin molecules will store extra iron to hedge against anaemia.

As a safety measure the body maintains a fleet of three times the necessary number of transferrin molecules. Accordingly, no more than one third of all these transporters will be occupied at any given moment, provided adequate protein is available to produce them in the first place. Everyone should learn how to interpret their own blood tests. If a blood test reveals a transferrin saturation higher than 33% and a low total iron binding capacity reading, one would suspect the presence of free iron and a probable protein deficiency.

Iron must be released and transferred into cells to do its work. When a cell requires iron, it displays a receptor. A copper-rich protein known as ceruloplasmin (the handler) enters

The body is careful in its management of this essential, yet toxic element. When iron deficiency is suspected, assess protein status, as protein is the key to iron

Blood chemistry readings indicative of iron deficiency include low serum iron, low saturation percentage, low ferritin, high total iron binding capacity and low Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), occurring with or without anaemia. If the diet is low in iron over a long period, or if there is excessive blood loss, red cells will become small. Over a long period, iron deficiency can result in a low haemoglobin reading, low hematocrit and low red cell count. In such cases, iron supplementation should be considered only when protein status is adequate and intestinal mucosa is healthy. Otherwise, iron supplementation could produce a state of free iron toxicity, resulting in infections and numerous other diseases. Consume foods rich in iron-binding proteins, such as cultured dairy and organic eggs. A diet that is high in refined carbohydrates can adversely affect iron status as sugar can draw iron from the ferritin molecules, releasing ‘tigers’ into the bloodstream. Dietary iron is essential for life but is highly toxic. If iron status is altered, then review lifestyle and correct the building blocks before flooding the system with excessive free iron. At Living Valley, the natural correction of iron status forms part of the plans provided for a long and healthy life. a

CONFESSIONS OF A

ghostwriter

So, you want to write a book? You've tried to start and it hasn't worked, or you're terrified of the blank page and have no idea where to start? Well, guess what? You are not alone. I've worked with countless business owners and story tellers and have found some very similar and common 'triggers' that hold us back. Your mind can be an extremely powerful tool, but it can also become one of your biggest hurdles if you let it go unchecked. You may have been told by tons of people that you have an incredible story to share, or have a unique perspective on the world that is refreshing or would be uplifting for others. What’s more, you may actually have felt called to write. You're right on the precipice of a magnificent journey BUT I also know about the self-talk that keeps you up at night – “I’m not a good writer,” “I don’t even know where to start,” “No one will care what I have to say…” Honestly, I think I could go on listing another hundred reasons why you're not putting pen to paper or tapping that keyboard. Instead, let's look through different eyes and flick some switches from negative to positive and from ‘can’t’ to ‘let’s go’! The people who have the most success in life – and the ones who go on to release their dream book – have found a way to master their mindset so they can flip those triggers from negative barriers to motivators. Let’s start with the mindset of ‘I’m not a

56 ISSUE 99

good writer...’ I have found people usually fall into three camps; people who are good with words, people who are amazing with numbers and people who are incredible verbal communicators. You are a unicorn if you excel in all three areas. Even people who can string together an engaging sentence or two may question their ability to write an entire book. No matter which category you fall into, I challenge you to look beyond whether you are a ‘good writer’ or not. Whose measure are you using anyway? In fact, 90% of aspiring authors already have the skills to be able to get their message across, it may just need a little tweaking later on. Rest assured, this is part of the process anyway! It’s a matter of getting out of your own head and letting the words flow through you. We can get caught up in the ‘how to’, perfectionism and doing it right. Every manuscript, no matter what the state of the first draft is, will go through several rounds of editing as a matter of process. The key ingredient is the content. Your editors need to have something to work with. I’d like to share a little story with you for inspiration. I met with a farmer in his seventies in 2019 who had written his life story. A two-finger typist, he had laboured away at the keyboard for countless hours over a number of years. There was not a single space between sentences in his writing... but his content was gold. On the surface, he was not a ‘good writer’ but when I began to polish up what was

there, he was actually an extraordinary one. He was able to articulate his life experiences in a way that was uniquely his and when he was done, he knew he could call upon someone like myself to help him get his manuscript to the point where it could be published. He has been able to fulfil his long-held dream of becoming an author.

It may be used all the time, but the old adage ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ rings so true here. Many aspiring authors are so worried about starting at the ‘right place’ that they don’t start at all. Join me at the Ignite and Write workshop to smash through mindset barriers and create solid foundations from which to write and walk away with confidence on your path to authorship. DIGITAL EXPERT MOVES

to the Sunshine Coast

Other than the massive rise of eCommerce across the globe, the biggest change Covid-19 introduced for Online Visions was the closure of their Brisbane office. This closure means that Yvette Moreau, owner of Online Visions, and her team now all work remotely and that means that she has been able to fulfill a life-long dream of moving to the Noosa region on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Previously, running a high profile eCommerce agency was always associated with an inner-city presence, but now much of the industry still works from home. Yvette started out as a photographer but moved into the digital space after studying Web Design and Multimedia. After a back injury in her last year of study made it difficult to take on full-time work in the industry, Yvette got into the NEIS scheme through the government in 2001 to start up her business. The program taught her how to write a business plan and provided ongoing mentoring and financial 60 ISSUE 99

assistance. This, combined with designing small business websites whilst studying, proved to be a great way to get started. Being a female founder in the male-dominated eCommerce industry filled Yvette with pride. She built her first eCommerce site in 2003 and instantly became addicted and fascinated with transacting online, how it could be done and ways to do it better.

Yvette and Online Visions have worked on some amazing projects over their 20-year span, but being part of the Mobile Optimisation Initiative (MOI) in 2019, a global study by Paypal, Magento and Hi-Conversion was definitely a highlight.

Their clients range from small boutiques to large retailers and everything in between.Yvette and the Online Visions team love to work with brands who are serious about improving their eCommerce strategy and infrastructure and understand the value of having a good agency to support them. Online Visions cover everything from eCommerce Consulting, UX/ Web Design, eCommerce Website Development, Integrated Commerce (integrations with third-party business systems), email automation, and Customer Experience/Conversion Rate Optimisation.

We asked Yvette to share a tip that may assist with improving your digital presence. 1) Customer Experience (CX) wins over pricing strategy every time, so personalise the interactions with your customers as much as you can. There are ways to do this through your website by segmenting your customers into groups and making your messaging, product recommendations, and overall experience more relevant to them. But nothing beats exceptional customer service. I’ve seen a lot of smaller businesses give up thinking they can’t compete with goliaths, but you can gain a competitive advantage, referrals, and drive repeat purchasing by being more engaged with your customers, seeking qualitative feedback and making them part of your brand where possible. 2) Get advice: I probably sound bias but the value of eCommerce consulting is very underrated. So many people make uninformed decisions on their website tech-stack, engage developers offshore to build their site, end up with terrible outcomes but have no budget to have it corrected and continue to lose by having their advertising spend going to waste through a poor converting site. Prevention is better than a cure – having a detailed requirements analysis and plan in place can avoid that scenario and also help you get better outcomes from offshore resourcing. 3) Test & Optimise: it’s amazing how many people spend thousands driving traffic to their website without properly analysing the onsite user experience and reasons why customers aren't buying. A/B testing can uncover small changes to your site and significantly improve revenue. But don’t just focus on conversion rate in your optimisation process – look at other metrics such as cart rate, revenue per visitor (RPV) and average order value (AOV).

They were one of 22 agencies globally selected to participate. The MOI was about how to close the “Mobile Revenue Gap”, which is the problem of mobile website traffic being much higher than desktop but on average has a 40% lower conversion rate. The study included over 120 A/B test experiments that they ran on their clients’ sites to improve not only the conversion rate, but also focused on the Cart Rate and the Revenue Per Visitor (RPV). This allowed them to benchmark their clients’ results and performance against other participants, which were invaluable. The results of the MOI are impressive with an average revenue lift of 8.12%. Forrester wrote a report on it and Yvette is happy to share it with anyone interested. One of the company’s other biggest achievements was becoming a Magento Solution Partner in 2015. Online Visions became the first agency in Queensland to achieve this accolade, which is something that’s normally reached by much larger companies. They are also now a strategic partner with BIgcommerce.

4) Listen to Industry Podcasts and Webinars: there is so much information out there on eCommerce and other brands sharing their stories of success as well as an abundance of information on the latest technology. If you join our email list we can keep you updated with the latest online events. 5) Be Unique: eCommerce is increasingly more competitive regardless of the space you are in. Focus on what is unique to your brand, create rich content and informative product descriptions that talk about how your products solve your customers’ problems, not just their features or specifications.

If you would like to obtain more insights like this, you can connect with Yvette Moreau on LinkedIn or head on over to www.onlinevisions.com.au/blog/ Also join Yvette’s Sunshine Coast eCommerce MeetUp group via Meetup.com a www.onlinevisions.com.au

Online Visions specialises in B2C / Online Retail, and also has a large focus on the rapidly evolving Wholesale/B2B and D2C space with their brand B2B Commerce that offers digitisation for manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors. www.mattersmagazine.com.au 61

WOMEN INSPIRED

WRITING

inspiration

The Sunshine Coast is swarming with incredible women, and they’re documented in an inspiring new book by talented local, Melinda Uys. As Melinda Uys compiled the lives of 49 Sunshine Coast ladies for the first edition of Women Inspired, a number of common themes emerged. As the women divulged their individual stories, a love of this beautiful region, the strength to overcome diabolical challenges and the determination to seek a life of joy rang out again and again. The story lines and characters shifted and weaved, but the themes remained constant, the individual triumphs inspirational. For Melinda, the process of interviewing and writing about each woman has been a masterclass in motivation, carefully distilled onto the pages of Women Inspired, a highquality coffee table book guaranteed to wake your inner feminine warrior. A senior secondary teacher of English and History for over a decade and a content writer for the past five years, Melinda has emerged as a formidable writing talent. With clients both here and internationally, her nuanced skills in writing for senior management in education has transformed into a penchant for ghostwriting, content writing and editing both here and internationally. “I particularly enjoy writing for my tourism clients: being enthusiastic about and showcasing the Sunshine Coast is really special,” Melinda says.

innovative and inspirational women. It is such an honour.” Along with Jaya McIntyre of Empire Art Photography, the three women have produced a book that is both beautiful and stirring. Every story in the book speaks of trials and challenges faced and each woman’s tenacity in overcoming them. From domestic violence to homelessness, devastating health battles, ingrained sexism and workplace bullying or simply getting their businesses and ideas off the ground, each story is unique and ultimately inspiring. Melinda laughs as she recalls, “I would finish each interview and think to myself, What on Earth am I doing with my life? Each woman was so full of life and joy, regardless of the path they’d taken to get to that point. Even reading the stories now, each one is a little nudge: get busy creating the life you want.” Throughout the pages of Women Inspired, another message becomes clear: there is no formula or series of achievements equalling inspiration. Every woman has a story of strength worth sharing that will motivate another to back herself, to make a safer choice or grab on to an opportunity with both hands. “They’ve shared their story in the hope it will inspire others to rise up to those challenges and overcome them. That’s truly wonderful,” Melinda says. With another edition of this incredible book planned for 2022, Melinda is urging applicants to step forward: “We’re ready to document the next 50 inspiring Sunny Coasters, and it will fill fast.” Reserve your spot via the Women Inspired website.

When asked to author Women Inspired, a project aimed at showcasing the incredible strength, innovation and caring spirit of the Sunshine Coast’s women, she jumped at the chance. “When I was approached by Josanne Falla to come onboard, I was completely floored. Not only was I being handed an opportunity to do what I love, I would be meeting some of the Coast’s most influential, 62 ISSUE 99

Natalie’s Sacred Cacao Ceremony Facilitator Training has just been approved by the International Institute of Complementary Therapies (IICT) in over 25 countries. In modern times, anyone can use Sacred Cacao to connect with their higher self, their spiritual deity, and most importantly, to connect with their true self and purpose on Earth and as a powerful selfhealing tool. participant to connect with their hearts, souls and the subconscious places where trauma or pain resides. Using a combination of sacred breath work, sound healing, light language, song and hands-on energy practices, she supports and assists the emotional release of each participant. When we work with Sacred Cacao, we are working with the ancestors of this powerful plant medicine, with our own ancestors and guides, and in the process, we may become aware of memories, thoughts and feelings that are ready to be released and healed, thus restoring the soul and heart to a peaceful balance. Sacred Cacao is not just for those on a spiritual path; no experience is required to embrace your emotions and gently release them. She also works with corporate teams of men and women, who acknowledge that to move forward and excel in life, they have to let go of the baggage that is hidden inside them.

IV infusion? WITH DR GHAFOOR // REJUVENATIVE

Natalie McIvor

Do I need it? Healthier skin? Check. Boosting your immune system? Check.

Many couples have also attended private ceremonies to deepen their connection and relationship. Sacred Cacao Ceremony is also the perfect fit for retreats and personal development workshops as a way to integrate and assimilate the teachings received. In fact, Natalie will be facilitating her Scared Cacao Ceremony at my upcoming You Matter Empowering Women’s Retreat in August. Natalie shares that working with plant medicine invites us to let go of the past, without having to go into the story behind the trauma or blockages. Staying in the story and re-hashing it is what locks it into our brain and subconscious where it can create illness, disease and stress. She has trained over 40 Sacred Cacao Facilitators in the past year and her training has attracted people who wish to learn these energy and ceremony tools for

personal use, to complement their current modalities and to branch out and commence their own Sacred Circle work – including yoga teachers, kundalini dance teachers, psychologists, healers, teachers, business coaches, massage therapists and sacred circle facilitators. Curious about Sacred Cacao and the benefits of ceremony? Jump onto her website to receive your free eBook. You can also order your own yummy cacao while you are there. Natalie truly believes that the way to move forward in life and contribute more to our planet is to heal our own stuff – it is never about anyone else, and the power in honouring that means we then can learn tools to become our own healer. The business is growing fast on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay and Agnes Waters. Intravenous vitamin therapy involves the administration of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, such as vitamin C and glutathione, directly into the bloodstream in the form of a drip. The IV method bypasses the digestive system, which can allow greater quantities of nutrients for optimal absorption. People maybe lacking in vitamin C when they don't include enough fruits and vegetables in their diet are at risk of lower levels of Vitamin C. This can affect their skin, hair, fingernails, joints, and sometimes be responsible for dry, damaged hair, slow healing, easy bruising, rough bumpy skin, painful and swollen joints. Pollution, a change in diet and various other factors, such as stress, can damage the body without us being aware. This ultimately forces the body to consume these vitamins. IV nutrients are given through an IV drip, typically into the arm, under medical supervision. The drip itself is generally painless, although you may feel a sting when the needle is inserted. It may take the drip between half an hour to one hour to infuse, during which time you can relax. While negative side effects from IV vitamin therapy are very uncommon, you may experience mild side effects, such as facial flushing, thirst or mild dizziness. THANK YOU ninety-nine times over

We could not be more proud or more grateful about sharing with you that this is the 99th issue of Matters Magazine.

articles over the last two years in the magazine and really thought they knew their stuff.” TRUE STORY!

Sure, we have changed our name over the years from BUSINESS MATTERS to MATTERS MAGAZINE and we changed from monthly to quarterly, however 14 years is a very long time to still be going strong and still totally loving what we do and, of course, still being very relevant here on the Sunshine Coast.

So, you see, the ROI was WAY, WAY, WAY BIGGER than he knew.

We truly pride ourselves on INSPIRING, EDUCATING and CONNECTING business owners and business professionals to each other and to their prospective clients. Some of the things we are truly grateful for and proud of are: • We are still constantly getting new enquiries from business owners wanting to find out more about joining the magazine. e are still constantly getting emails from readers who are loving •W what we do. They tell us how much they love the inspiration and education we give on all things business and life. e are constantly getting such amazing feedback from our •W advertisers about their campaign’s success. It’s an interesting one, that, because sometimes success doesn’t exactly look the way we think it should. Let me give you an example of what I mean here. A few years ago, I had a client that had been advertising with us for a couple of years. He was about to renew his campaign but wasn’t really a hundred percent sure about his ROI. He would ask his clients how they heard about him, and Matters Magazine wasn’t always the answer, so he was hesitant. He did end up renewing and said he would give it one more try to get the ROI he believed he NEEDED to continue. But here’s the thing – in that period of time, he sold half the business to a new investor. A little while later, I was having lunch with the two of them and I asked the new investor a question: “What made you choose this company to invest in?” He said, “Oh, that’s simple I had been reading their

We don’t always ask the questions that will give us the answers we need in order to quantify our advertising truly. This is a perfect example of how BEING SEEN and BUILDING yourself up as an expert in your particular industry can have amazing future results that you just don’t know about at the time and may actually never know about. If I didn’t ask this question in this moment, it may have never been answered and therefore never known.

So, the bottom line is that success in advertising is very much about setting yourself up as the go-to person in your industry, and it isn’t just one thing, it’s all sorts of things. There are so many different avenues you can take. At Matters Magazine we are so grateful to you, our readers, for your continued support over the last 14 years. We know that we would not still be around if you didn’t read us, if you didn’t support us. Of course, a HUGE thank you to our advertisers both past and present.

Our next issue is OUR MILESTONE ISSUE, our 100TH. Holycrapamoly, excuse the language, but wow, I remember the 50th like it was just yesterday. Some of our milestones over the years are some of the amazing awards we were fortunate to have won, with the culmination being the Excellence Award Small Business Of The Year in 2013. That was pretty incredible, we know we will never top that (partly because it’s huge and partly because we no longer enter awards) but we are pretty proud and pretty grateful for that plaque on our wall constantly reminding us of our relevance, our longevity and the

ongoing support we have from the Sunshine Coast. You heard it here first – issue 100, our milestone issue will be our first Bi-Annual issue. We are changing the magazine to twice a year. So watch this space, and if it appeals to you to be seen as the expert in your field in the eyes of the Business Owners and Business Professionals here on the Sunshine Coast, then get in touch. We offer a FREE little mini write up in the magazine, just for allowing us the opportunity to tell you about what we might be able to offer you. KRISTINA RUTH – BOOK RELEASE

WHAT DOES THANK YOU

NEW BOOK RELEASE OPENS UP

critical conversation Sunshine Coast author Kristina Ruth is now ready to share her legacy, a book seven years in the making, which will help people understand toxic relationships and how to leave them safely for self-preservation.

Thank you, a simple exclamation with colossal expression. It can be a surprise note, a gift or fresh flowers, a quiet word with a smile and a nod, the start to a letter or finishing statement. However it is delivered, these influential and meaningful words have a powerful impact. Thank you conveys gratitude when given and satisfaction when received. Thank you represents acknowledgement, recognition, credit, respect, appreciation, esteem and praise. It shows approval with a yes and refusal with a no. This polite remark can divert a sentiment or alter an opinion. It can demonstrate courage or express humility. It is formal or informal, colloquial or ceremonial. It can be strong, soft, rare or plentiful. Thank you can imply encouragement and fulfilment. It can embody relief or reprieve, show care and graciousness. It can be fierce or gentle, callous or caring, worthy or insensitive.

Thank you carries the deepest meaning with potent effect. It can say a thousand words in just two syllables. It can be expressed silently or raucously, but is as well understood. It can be written or spoken. It is universal. Its power unabated. It is easy to pronounce, but sometimes hard to say. It should be remembered, honoured, treasured and considered. I say thank you to so fortunately live on the Sunshine Coast, thank you for the love and laughter from my family and friends, for the amazing team I have around me, to our community for their kindness and support, for health and happiness. I also say thank you for adversity and loss and the lessons it brings, for the challenges and learnings which help us develop and grow. Thank you are our first words instilled and can carry the most meaningful reward. It can be said in an instant but carry a lifetime of significance.

Thank you! Roz White 68 ISSUE 99

The Self-Preservation Guide – How to leave a toxic relationship & change your life aims to educate and empower readers. The pocket-size guide also includes practical information to help support people through challenging situations associated with leaving a toxic relationship.

“This book will be a life-changing epiphany for so many, guiding them through ways to attain self-awareness, self-realisation and self-respect,” Kristina says. “It will help them find their defining moment to transform their lives from misery and fear to happiness and freedom.” Kristina was driven to write this book because of the harrowing statistic that in Australia, one in three women has experienced physical violence since the age of fifteen, and more horrifically, more than one woman is killed by her current or former partner every week in domestic violence related incidents. “As lockdowns come and go due to Covid-19, the problem is only getting worse. We have an obligation as a society to change the way we are dealing with this national crisis by educating those around us on how to recognise a toxic relationship,” Kristina says. Kristina says creating The Self-Preservation Guide has been a labour of love, but there were also many challenges she had to overcome.

“For a long time, I’ve wanted to write this book to educate, empower, support and inspire other people to change their lives, but there was also a lot of self-doubt and negative self-talk that I had to conquer to start,” she says. “Writing it has taught me about being brave enough to start the conversation, and I hope it encourages others to put fear aside to have those critical conversations.” e www.theself-preservationguide.com

THE ROAD

to retirement WITH ROD RUSSELL // SAVVY BUSINESS SALES Statistics suggest approximately 75% of business owners are “baby boomers” and a majority of them will be looking to retire and exit their businesses in the next five years. Surprisingly, many owners are not aware of the options and processes available regarding possibly one of the most important transactions of their career. Often the next generation is not interested in transitioning into their parents’ shoes, so owners really only have a couple of options. They can either sell the business or wind it up and walk away. The second option is brutal and will affect many including staff, suppliers, customers and, of course, result in a financial loss. Option one can result in a seamless transition with a well-deserved financial windfall included. So, how do you go about selling a business? Most brokers provide obligation fee appraisals and examples of recent sales results on comparable businesses, to calculate a realistic sale price.

If you are satisfied with these expectations and you engage a broker, the business must be prepared for sale. With the help of your professional advisors, business brokers will guide you through the preparation process, ensuring the business achieves a premium price while meeting buyers’ stringent expectations.

Brokers will do everything possible to find the most suitable and capable buyers possible. We work for a success fee, so the selling fee is not paid until settlement is completed. No doubt it would be a daunting decision for most business owners to sell after many years at the helm, however, they may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome if they choose a professional business broker to handle the sale. ca www.savvybusiness.com.au

With over 25 years’ experience selling businesses on the Sunshine Coast and beyond, Rod Russell and his awardwinning team at Savvy Business are leaders in buying or selling businesses.
