BEING INVOLVED IN A CHARITY OR

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION CAN BE

GOOD FOR YOUR BUSINESS WITH VICTORIA BERRY

Charities and Community Organisations are always screaming out for help. I have been involved in many Organisations over the past 30 years, most notably Surf Life Saving, children’s soccer and most recently the Sunshine Coast Chamber Music Festival. A lot of the opportunities stem from being pushed out of your comfort zone. Some roles seem like a natural fit, such as an accountant being the treasurer, but others are a little left field, such as a board member on a Music Festival when I know absolutely zero about chamber music! Every role gives you an opportunity to learn, to grow as a person and by default, to pass on these learnings to your business. Some of the learnings to be found include:

•P ushing yourself to deal with people you don’t know.

soaking up as much information about it

•E ngaging with people within the organisation and out and learning soft skills that help you communicate with them.

period of time, like a sponge!

nderstanding how Corporate Governance •U works and how this can be implemented in your own business. ealising you need to keep receipts for •R everything if you want to be reimbursed. •B ecoming empathetic with others around you and understanding that your situation can be vastly different to theirs.

and the organisation as you can in a short • Understanding that some have hidden agendas and learning how to not be drawn into their drama. Ultimately, community service is a life-long education and it’s something I’ve encouraged my kids to be involved with as well. I love the boards I’m involved with and am grateful for the ongoing opportunities provided to me to continue my personal growth. So what’s stopping you? ca

• L earning when to say “No” to requests that are not appropriate to your role. • L earning to say “Yes” to unusual requests that push you out of your comfort zone. • Learning to work as a team. • Knowing that you don’t know anything about the role you have just accepted and
