CULTIVATING WISDOM AT A YOUNG AGE: A PATH TO LIFELONG SUCCESS

In a fast-paced and ever-changing world, wisdom is a timeless virtue with immense value. Although wisdom is often associated with older people, it can be fostered and developed at any age. People who embrace wisdom early in life can make better decisions, build meaningful relationships, and navigate challenges more effectively.

"One should be willing to explore practical steps to nurture wisdom and become wise at a young age. This will set the stage for a fulfilling and prosperous future”, says Dr Manimekalai Mohan, the founder of SSVM Group of Institutions, Coimbatore.

What is the first quality a child should cultivate to acquire wisdom?

One of the first steps towards gaining wisdom is adopting a growth mindset. Embrace the belief that intelligence and knowledge can be developed through effort, learning, and experience. View challenges as opportunities for growth, remain open to creative ideas, and see failures as valuable learning experiences. This will encourage continuous self-improvement and expand your perspective.

How should one encourage a child to explore new possibilities, seek wisdom, and gain diverse experiences?

Wisdom requires knowledge acquisition. Encourage your child to read voraciously, explore various subjects, and stay curious about the world around them. Engaging in intellectual conversations, attending seminars, and seeking mentorship from wise individuals helps them gain different perspectives, cultures, and experiences.

A child's overall development depends on critical thinking. In what ways can teachers and parents help students in this regard?

Critical thinking is a crucial skill for developing wisdom. Teach your child to question assumptions, evaluate information objectively, and think independently. Engaging in fruitful debates, analysing complex problems, and considering multiple viewpoints before forming opinions should become a habit.

Should parents and teachers often share their own life experiences with children? If so, how will it nurture their well-being?

Wisdom grows through reflection and learning stems from experience. Ask your kid to set aside quality time for introspection, journaling, or meditation to contemplate thoughts, actions, and lessons learned. Help them in identifying patterns, strengths, and areas of improvement. Remind them to celebrate successes, acknowledge mistakes, and extract wisdom from both.

How should one seek guidance from mentors, and will it help young minds to embrace a growth mindset?

Wise mentors offer invaluable guidance on our journey to wisdom. Ensure that your child engages in meaningful conversations, seeks advice, and learns from the experiences of teachers and older people at home. Their incredible knowledge from their life experiences can provide children with practical insights, broaden their perspective, and inspire them to embrace a wise approach to life.

6E Leader

Welcome aboard, dear passengers,

We transcend distance and time to celebrate 17 remarkable years that have shaped IndiGo into the epitome of safety, on-time performance and customer-centricity in the Indian aviation industry. I have been fortunate to witness the airline's growth from its nascent stages to becoming a dominant force in the Indian aviation industry.

As we celebrate 17 years of ruling the skies, it is an opportune moment to reflect on IndiGo's trailblazing journey, marked by remarkable firsts and numerous achievements that have solidified its position as India's leading airline. IndiGo has consistently been at the forefront of innovation and progress, setting new benchmarks in the aviation industry. In 2005, IndiGo made history by placing a massive order of 100 Airbus A320s, signalling our intention to transform air travel in India. In 2015, we became the first airline in the country to induct the Airbus A320 NEO (New Engine Option) into our fleet. The A320 NEO's fuel efficiency and reduced carbon footprint set a new standard for ecofriendly aviation, reflecting our unwavering commitment to sustainability.

In the years that followed, IndiGo continued its journey of firsts with groundbreaking additions to our fleet. The Airbus A321 NEO allowed us to expand our capacity and enhance the flying experience for our passengers. Our pioneering spirit didn't stop there. In 2017, IndiGo ventured deep into the heart of the country with the induction of ATR aircraft - enabling us to connect remote regions and smaller cities.

IndiGo was honoured with the flag of India, a distinction typically reserved for national carriers, during the opening ceremony of the airport at Deogarh under the UDAN scheme and I had the privilege of receiving it myself on behalf of IndiGo from our honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi.

With the last aircraft order, IndiGo is set to build a robust fleet of over 1,000 aircraft, a feat that translates into extensive job opportunities for a large population. IndiGo's

growth not only strengthens its presence but also contributes significantly to the aviation industry's workforce.

The foundation of our success lies in our relentless focus on operational excellence. From the very beginning, we realised that being on time was a cornerstone of a great flying experience. IndiGo continues to shine in the global aviation arena, consistently securing the number one position for on-time performance (OTP) among the top 10 airlines in the world for four months this year. IndiGo's focus on punctuality ensures that passengers reach their destinations on schedule.

But our success goes beyond operational efficiency. It is the dedicated team of pilots, cabin crew, engineers, and ground staff who have steered IndiGo's success over the years. Their passion for aviation, unwavering commitment to safety, and warm welcome to every passenger on board have become the essence of our identity. I am also immensely proud to share that IndiGo holds the distinction of employing the maximum number of women pilots in the world.

However, as we celebrate these significant moments, we must also acknowledge the unprecedented challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the resilience and commitment of the IndiGo team shone brighter than ever. Amidst various trying times, IndiGo rose to the occasion, showcasing resilience, adaptability, and unwavering commitment to its core values. Notably, Operation Ganga became a shining example of compassion and national duty as IndiGo operated 42 flights, bringing back over 9,200 Indian citizens to their homeland.

This airline has not only been my workplace; it has been a second home, a place where passion and purpose converge. To our passengers, we promise to keep soaring higher, striving to create an even better flying experience with each passing day. Your satisfaction is our ultimate reward. I thank you for being a part of our journey.

Bhubaneswar, the state capital, offers a seamless transition between two time zones - the old quintessential temple town and the new, hip city.

Why visit: With pleasant weather and cosy cafés, Bhubaneswar exudes the vibe of a hill station. This city, which traces its history back more than 3,000 years to the Kalinga empire, boasts numerous temples, earning it the moniker of Temple City. It is also a melting pot of Odia heritage - from handloom to art and crafts. For traditional handicrafts like wood and stone sculptures, appliqué work, dhokra casting and palm leaf engravings, head to Ekamra Haat.

Savour Odia delicacies like dalma and a wide variety of pithas. I crave dahi bara aloo dum - a popular street food. Do try chhena poda – a celebrated dessert.

Must: The scenic hour-long coastal drive to Puri (about 60 km away), home of the revered Jagannath Temple. Make a day trip to the 2nd century Udaygiri and Khandagiri caves with exquisite carvings, just a few kilometres away from the city, or the Chilika Lake for a perfect weekend!

Note: Bhubaneswar hosted the Hockey Men's World Cup For two consecutive seasons - 2018 and 2023.

A land of diverse attractions and cultures, every corner of our country is unique. This Independence Day, travel with five proud Indians to their charming hometowns and uncover hidden gems.

Must: One of my favourites is the Strand, an ornate riverside promenade, dotted with old French homes and monuments.

CHANDANNAGAR, West Bengal

S hramona Poddar

Travel Influencer (@mishti.and.meat)

With a French colonial heritage, Chandannagar in West Bengal (about an hour away from Kolkata) seems to be caught in a time-warp. Traditional Bengali life meanders past museums, churches and old homesteads with French names!

Why visit: Relics of the long French occupation stand tallInstitut de Chandernagore, also known as Dupleix Palace, which displays cannons used in the Anglo-French wars and antiques, and the French Fort, now a court. The town is also where St. Joseph’s Convent, my alma mater, is. Equally popular is Patal Bari, where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore used to stay. The building's underground floor is submerged in the waters of river Ganges and it is said that it was used to secretly transfer freedom fighters before our Independence.

Try ghoti gorom, a popular street food made with heated sev, spices, chopped onions and lemon juice. Do not miss out on the indigenous smoked Bandel cheese!

Note: Chandannagar is famous for Jagaddhatri (an avatar of Goddess Durga) Puja, held in autumn. During this time, the city decks up with twinkling light décor that is famous all over the state!

TIRBIN, Arunachal Pradesh

Must: In and around Tirbin, you can try river rafting, jungle walks and bird-watching. Nearby, Aalo (formerly Along), is known for its fragrant orange orchards, millet and buckwheat plantations.

A mystical land carpeted with lush greenery, rolling hills, fruit orchards, gushing rivers and vibrant local tribes...that's picture-perfect Tirbin, a small and remote village tucked into Arunachal Pradesh's green heart.

Why visit: Tirbin is an unexplored paradise, with crystal-clear waterfalls cascading down velvety hillsides and paddy fields stretching till the horizon. It's much like an untouched version of Bali! Away from the tourist din, Tirbin's beauty is raw and pristine, like a dreamy tropical rainforest bursting with flowers and orchids! But Tirbin is not the only hidden gem in Arunachal Pradesh, there are many such destinations offering unseen thrills and adventures.

Note: The annual Bascon Festival that takes place around year-end is a must-experience. It showcases the traditions and culture of our tribe (Galo) with colourful dances, cuisine, sample homes, plants and way of life.

Try our food, which is cooked in bamboo containers, with a unique flavour and aroma. A typical dish would be free-range chicken and banana leaf cooked in bamboo – it’s delicious.

30 August 2023

Note: Walk along the Silk Route, stopping at places that were associated with the trading path. You can also enjoy star gazing, yoga and mindfulness sessions with the monks at nearby monasteries.

TEGAR, Ladakh

R igzin Kalon

Hotel owner (Lchang Nang Retreat), Nubra Valley

Located on the land through which the Silk Route once passed, Tegar is a sanctum of peace surrounded by jagged peaks and dizzying depths of the Nubra Valley in Ladakh.

Why visit: Tegar is as off the beaten track as it can be with traces of the ancient Silk Route still visible. Nearby there are stupas with prayers etched on them for the wellbeing of travellers on the route. In the village, with around 400 inhabitants, people are honest, and sustainability is a part of our life. While here, you can explore the centuriesold Samstanling Gompa, the Ensa Gompa and Murgi Tokpo, with pre-historic rock carvings. Tegar is the starting point for Zamskhang Palace trek.

Must: My favourite spot is the Yarab Tso lake, a hidden and secluded waterbody that is considered holy. Its serene beauty is indescribable!

You can try pork fry with tingmo (local steamed bun), paba (barley bread) with chives and lassi, yak and goat meat, momos and the morel mushroom soup. At breakfast don't skip khambir bread (local sourdough) with butter tea.

32 August 2023

C hef Nishant Choubey (Sattvik, Delhi & Michelin-plated Indus, Bangkok)

BOKARO, Jharkhand

Must: Drive towards Patratu Valley (about three hours away), a dreamland of lush forests, stunning views and misty mountains. The drive is as beautiful as the valley! Netua Island, on the other side of Patratu Dam, is breathtakingly beautiful. Nearby are the revered Chinnamastika Mandir and the Baba Baidyanath Dham Temple (in Ramgarh and Deoghar districts, respectively); and the majestic Hundru Falls, located between Ranchi and Bokaro.

As a chef who travels around the world, including with Indian PM Narendra Modiji, I love that the food from Jharkhand is robust and flavourful. Our tribal food is very popular and we have hundreds of varieties of saag (leafy vegetables) alone! Fish is a staple and goat is cooked whole, with nothing wasted. In Ranchi (about three hours away), try pattal chicken roast (cooked in sal leaves) at Mandi Eddpa, a tribal restaurant.

A modern industrial town born from an ancient land, Bokaro is a quiet spot of calm. Popularly known as the steel city, in reference to the iconic steel plant here, it's the gateway to Jharkhand's treasures.

Why visit: Well-laid out, Bokaro stretches out to a verdant landscape, which turns into a riot of colours during monsoon. Visit Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park, one of the largest zoological gardens in the state, and Garga Dam, a popular picnic spot. On the outskirts, explore Luguburu Ghantabari, a pilgrimage site of the Santhal community, surrounded by River Damodar, and small rivers Katail and Sadabahar. Visit the Lalpania waterfall nearby.

Note: Do not forget to carry back some traditional art and craft pieces like the paitkar paintings, small stone sculptures, and bamboo boxes and utensils.

FORGING AHEAD ON THE PATH OF DEVELOPMENT

Under the able guidance of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Chhattisgarh Government's Health, Tourism and Rural initiatives are shaping a better tomorrow for the state

It is the holistic approach of the Chhattisgarh government that has made the state prosper at a speed never achieved before. Government schemes are providing a makeover to the lives of Chhattisgarh's natives.

Gadhbo

Nava Chhattisgarh

Some of the most crucial scenes in Ramayana, an epic that narrates the life story and adventures of Lord Ram, take place in Chhattisgarh. It is to underpin this legacy of Lord Ram that the Chhattisgarh Government has come up with the idea of developing the Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit.

The state government started the Godhan Nyay Yojana on the occasion of Chattisgarh’s important festival ‘Hareli’ with an aim to prepare Vermicompost and other products from Coe dung collected in Gauthans.

Multi-dimensional Development

The brainchild of Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, an initiative was taken to provide free medical facilities to poor families living in slums. Under the Chief Minister Urban Slum Health Scheme, a total of 41,57,878 people have been treated so far by medical teams in mobile medical units, which cater to slum communities.

An incentive of Rs 10,000 per acre will be provided to farmers for planting non-timber, fruit trees, bamboo, minor forest produce and medicinal plants in nonforest areas instead of paddy.

The Chief Minister Mitan Yojana is a scheme under which home delivery of government services will be provided to residents. It includes getting documents like Birth certificate, marriage certificates and Pan cards and other documents at their doorstep.

From a burning river in Iceland and a pond in Australia to the beautiful colours of Canary Islands and the water lilies of Kerala, here's what our planet looks like from the sky. A few brilliant shots from the Drone Photo Awards.

THE EXHAUSTED LUNGS OF EARTH

The Colorado River basin has been severely impacted by a combination of poor management and prolonged drought, reaching a critical point of no return. The intricate patterns formed by the water, metaphorically resembling the lungs of the Earth, have depleted and are teetering on the edge of collapse.

RIVER OF FIRE by Tom Putt An alluvial river flows like a river of fire from the mountains to the ocean on the southern shoreline of Iceland, an island country that continues to be a mecca for aerial photographers. A leatherback turtle, the world's largest sea turtle, is captured by a drone returning to the sea after having spent several laborious hours laying eggs on a beach in French Guiana.

UPSIDE DOWN

In this picture, one can see a moor landscape. One could think that if looked into the water, there are plenty of stars in the reflection from the sky. In reality, these are just leaves.

CROSS THE FILED

Women captured harvesting grass in a field in Thang Binh, Quang Nam, Vietnam. Winds blowing through the grass create beautiful shapes. This grass is harvested to be used as raw materials for such handcrafted objects as hats, bags and more.

CLOUD INVERSION

"The crater kept spewing out lava in quantities never seen before in the months prior. The huge eruptions stopped and left the crater coated in fresh lava. At the same time, fog started engulfing the area which made for this dreamy and surreal photograph," says the photographer about the shot.

MOSAIC ALOFT

The coloured terraces of the Canary Islands seen from above appear like a vibrant mosaic. They are a result of a tax system that encouraged building on top of existing structures, as well as the region's architectural and cultural influences, resulting in vibrant and practical outdoor living spaces.

SWIM IN THE STARS

Under the heavy clouds, thousands of dry leaves glisten like stars from this vantage point, while gentle waves ripple beneath. A bride and groom find themselves in a boat adorned with beautiful flowers, creating a truly romantic scene.

LILIES, LILIES EVERYWHERE

Malarikkal is a jewel in Kerala. When water lilies greet this terrain, a carpet of pleasant pink envelops the entire region in a breathtaking formation that is hard to explain in mere words.

“In 9th grade when we lost Papa, a farmer who had worked all his life to give us a stable life, I thought, ‘Life will never be the same again’–Without him, I felt the weight of family’s responsibility fall on me. So I diligently completed my schooling and enrolled in a good college. Socha koi government job kar lunga. Little did I know life was about to change…

During my 2nd year, I happened to tag on a trip along with my cousin and fell in love with the road. Having lived a sheltered life, the adventure of waking up in a new place, and the uncertainty of it, felt exciting. By the end of that trip, I knew I wanted to travel for the rest of my life.

As a student on a tight budget, I started finding ways to travel economically, and began travel vlogging. My family was supportive–they’d excitedly watch my vlogs. It drove me to hustle harder. While focusing on growing my channel, I also took up a job in an IT firm.

Over the years, between hitchhiking and sleeping on stations and park benches to staying in temples and gurudwaras, I explored over 18 states, and 3 countries.

I never minded traveling on a budget. But this year, after a 3-month-long road trip from Darjeeling to Tirupathi Balaji and then to Bhubaneswar, I was tired. I looked for trains–but the last-minute tickets were expensive. So my brother said, ‘Why don’t you take a flight instead? It’s cheaper right now.’ That’s how I, a guy who vlogs about traveling on a budget, ended up taking a flight to save money–my first ever!

Back at home, I kept narrating my experience to my family for days. I told them of the blue sky and the tiny houses beneath and it was as if they were living my adventure through me, telling me how proud they were. But I told them, ‘Abhi toh bahut kuch karna baki hai!’

Although I’m still a long way from being a successful travel vlogger and fully supporting my family, I’ve not stopped dreaming. As I continue to travel and grow my channel, I’ve started saving up for my family’s first flight.

I know it might take some time, but I won’t stop until it does. Because that’s the kind of man Papa has raised, and because I want to tell him, ‘Don’t worry, I got it from here!’”

Over the years, between hitchhiking and sleeping on stations and park benches to staying in temples and gurudwaras, I explored over 18 states, and 3 countries.

City closest to the heart

I have always shared a close bond with Mumbai, not only because my father [veteran actor Biswajit Chatterjee] lives there but also because I have been visiting it since my childhood. Now, I visit Mumbai due to the exhilarating work that I continue to pursue when I am in the city. Be it the work culture, the people, the cool sea breeze, the beaches and pavbhaaji, the weather

or the overall go-getter vibe - Mumbai’s air is infectious. Yes, one might have issues with the traffic but you just have to tune yourself in a manner that you don’t feel restless inside the car while travelling from one part of the city to another. What I do is...I complete a large portion of my written jobs during the commute. That leaves me free to enjoy Mumbai once my work commitments are met with.

Mumbai and its beautiful outskirts

The outskirts of Mumbai are beautiful and short getaways are a must if you are in the city. The Western Ghats are breathtaking once you take to the road. There is so much to explore that calms your nerves. I would also like to mention Mumbai's iconic Sun-n-Sand Hotel, where I stay quite frequently. A favourite among many evergreen Bollywood stars, including Dev Anand and Shashi Kapoor, the hotel has featured in numerous films too. What's heartening is how its old world charm has been retained while continuing to floor guests with impeccable service. It’s a muststop whenever I am in the city.

Food favourites

I am a Bengali with a yen for delicious food. While every part of my country offers a veritable range of dishes that one needs a lifetime to savour - delicacies from Lucknow and Hyderabad are close to my heart. I absolutely admire the cuisine and the fare available in these cities. Melt-inmouth kebabs, aromatic biriyanis, and wellbalanced and spiced meat preparations are what makes Hyderabad and Lucknow a gourmand's go-to destination.

That memorable trip from childhood

You know how little boys feel, like they

have grown up when their mothers don’t accompany them to a place? Well, I felt it too! Around 1963-64, I had accompanied my father to Kashmir. He was shooting there for the film Mere Sanam. It was a trip to remember - the people, the place, the food, the excitement. Kashmir has always stupefied me. Nowadays, when I see the valley bustling with events and tourists, it leaves me with a wide smile. Instantly, those fond memories of my yesteryear trip to Kashmir resurfaces and I cherish all those joyful moments all over again.

Odisha and its evolution as a tourist magnet

I have been traveling to Odisha quite often. It is clear that the state has undergone changes. The roads are better and the infrastructure is fabulous. Odisha is full of history, heritage and culture. A visit to Puri’s Jagannath Temple is a must for me. The state is also one that takes pride in its arts and crafts - be it those who weave stunning ikat sarees, craft exquisite silver filigree jewellery or make stunning pattachitra art (that has been awarded GI status)!

Favourite places to visit Kolkata is my birthplace, so it will always be my favourite. But I felt immensely welcomed in Assam, Kerala and Tripura, apart from other cities and states. Kerala is a place I enjoy visiting because of the green cover, food and the calming aura. It relaxes and rejuvenates me. The enormity of India is not just in its size. You can actually feel the pulsating vibe of our country. I visit international destinations quite often but my heart lies within India as there is so much to visit and explore.

Travel as a celebrity

Celebrity travel is evolving. Earlier, we were hounded for autographs. Now, it’s selfies. Movement is restricted but we celebrities want to be recognised. Being papped or surrounded by fans can't be an irritant for us. I call this love.
